my heart is buried in venice or whatever i HATE this podcast
[i.d. a drawing of two figures hugging. the first person (implied to be slip jackson)is a glowing gold silhouette of a thin teenager with his back to the viewer. his hair is untrimmed and he's wearing a hospital gown. the other figure, peter nureyev, has short black hair and a lacy red shirt. nureyev's face is buried into slip's shoulder, effectively hiding his face, while his arms wrap around the other body. what little we can see of his expression is full of worry lines. end i.d.]

Dear Reader,
Tumblr media
As the year draws to a close and we step into the season of thanksgiving, I want to take a moment to share my deepest gratitude with my loyal readers. Your constant support has been a guiding light through both the challenges of the first half and the defining moments of the second. And now, as a token of appreciation, I'm excited to spread some holiday cheer with a Christmas Drabble Event!
You might be wondering: what exactly is that? Well, here's the fun part: I’ll be crafting personalized drabbles based on your festive prompts—just a little holiday magic to brighten your feeds! 🎁✨
Tumblr media
How It Works:
Who Can Participate? Everyone! Whether you’re a long-time follower or just discovering my page, this event is for you. Feel free to share with your friends so we can spread the Christmas cheer! 🎄
What’s a Drabble? A drabble is a very short story, typically 100-1000 words long, that I’ll write based on your prompt. Think of it as a little holiday treat in story form! 🎉
How to Request a Drabble: To get your drabble, simply:
Send me an ask with the following: Prompt or Idea: Whatever you want but read the rules! Theme/Genre: (Optional) Want fluff, angst, humor, or a touch of holiday magic? Tell me what you're aiming for! Example: Prompt: “Mikasa and Eren are snowed in and arguing over how to decorate the cabin for Christmas.” Theme: Humor, lighthearted banter
Tumblr media
Event Rules:
One Request Per Person: To keep it fair for everyone.
Identify Yourself: While anonymous requests are fine, think of a way to identify yourself (e.g., using an emoji or nickname like 'baby anon' or 'clover anon') so I can properly address you when posting.
Be Kind and Respectful: This is all about spreading holiday cheer and sharing the love in our fandom!
Patience Is Key: I’ll work hard to deliver your drabbles as quickly as possible, but keep in mind that it’s a busy season.
Word Limit: Drabbles will typically be 100-1000 words. If you have a preferred length within that range, feel free to note it. Requests exceeding 1k words won’t be accepted. If the event receives a high volume of asks, it will be capped at 15 drabbles.
Tumblr media
Important Content Guidelines:
I Will Write:
Any headcanon or scenario you can think up! Whether it’s from AUs on my blog or your original ideas, I'm all in—just make sure the prompt comes from you.
I Won’t Write:
CHB content (the storyline isn’t developed enough for scenario requests).
TPP content set after the story’s conclusion (requests are limited to between the wedding chapter and Lucerys’ birth).
No content of the unreleased fics: Castles Crumbling, Mr. Senator, or Venus in Furs.
I won’t be creating prompts from scratch.
Tumblr media
Important Dates:
Drabble Requests Opens: [11/19/2024]
Last Day for Requests: [11/22/2024]
Drabbles Will Be Posted: From December 25th, 2024 to January 6th, 2025!
Tumblr media
Thank you in advance for joining in and making this year a bit brighter for me. Your support means the world, and I appreciate you more than words can say.
Much love and gratitude!
Ro.

Reprising this post: After my viewing of The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock and my read of the novel The Pandora Principle, it has come to my attention that Saavik's characterization can in fact be interpreted as a mirror to different aspects of each of the members of the triumvirate, while still maintaining that she is her own unique, profound character.
Now, the essay. I said I'd do it if one person asked and four kind people did, so here it is! Its under the keep reading, because it's quite long!
To begin with the most obvious, Saavik and Spock. He is her mentor, teacher and father-figure in The Pandora Principle (TPP) and she spends the most time with him.
Firstly, the backstory we gain for Saavik in The Pandora Principle more clearly establishes her as half-Vulcan, which parallels Spock’s own half-vulcan heritage. She lives through the same struggle to fit in with her Vulcan peers, while also facing her with the impossibility of finding belonging elsewhere, because her other half is half-Romulan. She’s an outsider among her own people, and in TPP, we witness her quite overcompensating on her Vulcan emotional control while on the Enterprise and faced with returning feelings linked to her past.
Secondly, this also connects to her difficulty reconciling her feelings (and she feels a lot and deeply, much like Spock) and her logic (which she does embrace, but sometimes struggles with). To me, it parallels Spock’s journey through Kolinahr, the failure of which puzzles Saavik, since she perceives him as a perfect Vulcan, she has a hard time understanding how he could have failed. It's toward the climax of the story that they truly connect emotionally, and she realizes that combining feelings and logic is ultimately the way Spock chose, and is no less Vulcan for it.
Thirdly, we see Saavik, from a young age, as someone who is extremely curious, who loves to learn and discover as much as possible. She quickly takes a liking to Spock’s tricorder, which he traded with her knife on Hellguard to get her to leave the planet in the opening scenes of TPP. After the year on Dantria IV spent learning the Vulcan way and starting her education, it is implied that she lived on Vulcan and continued her education there, before joining Starfleet.
That brings me to the fourth point. Much like Spock, she has a hard time fitting in, and ultimately finds her place not on Vulcan, but with Starfleet. She might not have tried entering the VSA, but considering her abilities and mind, she most likely could have attended if she had wanted to. Within Starfleet, much like her mentor, Saavik has a tendency to quote regulations, which I also wanted to underline here.
Fifth point, and perhaps a less obvious one, but both Saavik and Spock have a deep capacity for understanding people, their motives and thoughts. While they both explain it/it's implied that they understand it as “well, logically, that’s how this person’s mind set worked.” It's mainly that they are both very empathic people, telepathy or not. In many instance in TOS Spock explains the behavior of a character, providing insight to Jim/the others and the audience with excellent insight, while Saavik, once she learns of Jim’s method of the Kobayashi Maru, reads him like an open book about his lack of experience with true, final loss in the line of duty (Because Jim has lost people, just not the way he lost Spock in TWOK)
To continue on that, while she can also be really insightful, she also shows a struggle to fully comprehend humans and their illogic, such as her confusion at Kirk’s joke in the turbolift in TWOK or at her fellow student’s proclivity for “fun” in TPP. This clearly parallels Spock’s own difficulties, which he empathizes with in their video calls in The Pandora Principle. Much like him, Saavik also desires to understand more, which stems from her natural curiosity, and is manifested by her enrolling in the Academy's baseball team.
Also, much like Spock with Sarek, Saavik is afraid of embarrassing or disappointing her mentor/father-figure once she goes to the Enterprise in TPP. She truly wants him to be proud of her, which is similar to Spock’s own behavior concerning his father’s expectations (except he is way less restrictive than Sarek and is so proud of Saavik anyway)
To finish, Saavik is also quite sassy, with special mention to her interactions with Bones in TPP, very stubborn (once again, read TPP you won't regret it (I have a PDF if anyone wants it)) and self-sacrificial. These last few traits I think can be explained by “being raised by Mr. S’chn T’gai Spock”.
Following up, Saavik and James T. Kirk. While we mostly see them interact in TWOK and briefly in TSFS, Saavik grew up hearing stories about this man (TOS fan in universe, ain't this crazy) and does resemble him more than I think even she knows.
To begin, both of them lived through absolutely traumatizing events in their childhood/youth, which deeply impacted their character. Saavik grew up on Hellguard, a Romulan colony in which she and the other children were abused, tortured and starved, in spite of the presence of replicators, then were abandoned on the desertic surface to fend for themselves, resulting in infighting, starvation, murders and deaths. This highly traumatic event, caused by authority figures and involving starvation is familiar to TOS fans, reflecting quite easily what Jim went through during his teenage years on Tarsus IV. Resulting from these events are many of Saavik’s and Jim’s survivalism techniques, trauma surrounding food (Ever noticed how Saavik is staring at Jim on Genesis planet when he mentions that food is first order of survival? I did.) as well as trauma, some mistrust and anger toward authoritarian figures and survivor’s guilt (or even just guilt regarding her actions in Saavik’s case, who implicitly had to kill and resort to violence to survive.)
After this massive paragraph, we can continue on happier comparisons. Saavik, just like Jim, is an exemplary Academy student. While she isn't called a “stack of books with legs”, it is implied that she is quite involved in her studies, while also taking some time to bonify her understanding of humanity on the side. Her insistence at understanding the test and what it was truly evaluating shows her devotion to her studies and even a perfectionism that Jim “youngest starfleet captain ever” must also have displayed at her age.
To continue, while much like Spock she chose Starfleet over the VSA, she doesn’t follow him in the science tract, but rather in the command tract, much like Jim. While in the Kobayashi Maru simulation, she shows a natural proclivity to it. She has a good command instinct, knows how to make decisions even in the face of highly stressful situations (even in simulation, we can see Spock's simulated-death shocked her), and yet she continues on, sends out orders, whips out strategy and asks for damage reports. Until the end, she keeps control and calm, even in the face of impossibility to win.
On that point, her questioning of the test, while it also could be read as her finding illogic that the test is unwinnable, also seem to me as a parallel to Jim, of not believing in No Win Scenarios. Even her presence on Genesis in TSFS, following her assignment to the USS Grissom, seems to me that in her grief, she still held some form of hope and desired to find a way. (And beside, she and Spock had promised that if one went lost, the other would find them in TPP)
To continue on, Saavik and Jim both have a sharp sense of right and wrong and justice, once more a consequence of their upbringing, but also a quality that serves them as commanding officers (and future commanding officers in Saavik’s case)
Also, both of them are exceptionally kind, and feel deeply, even if in Saavik’s case it’s not always as clear, her inner monologue in TPP truly shows that her emotions are strong. We see her anxious, happy, excited, afraid, apprehensive, angry, resentful, and many other emotions. She is also haunted by the events of her past and the emotions linked to it, in a way that mirror’s Jim in the episodes Obsession and The Conscience of the King.
To conclude, she too hate going to sickbay, as illustrated by her reluctance to be examined by McCoy even after her injuries upon the return to Hellguard in TPP, is also very stubborn (Thats a trend with the triumvirate) and I think I can liken her self-sacrificial tendency to Jim’s too.
(Little bonus similarity to AOS Jim, has what can be seen as a crush on Uhura the first time she sees her, she says: “But I have never seen anyone so aesthetically pleasing. I was unaware of that quality in humans. Oh.”)
Last but not least, Saavik and Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy. You might not expect it, but they do share similarity.
Firstly, I want to once again mention her emotions, and that Saavik, while Vulcan and mostly shown as aloof, can also have quite a temper, even more on Hellguard as a child and soon after leaving the planet. When she doesn't succeed at using a tricorder at first, she begins to yell at it, insults it and flings it around. That blatant show of anger and/or impulsivity can be likened to the grumpy doctor, who while he is an adult and much less exuberant in it, doesn't shy away from his anger. The way Saavik feels, and how we can truly see her mind in the narration of TPP truly likens her to the emotional McCoy, while she also attempts to balance it out by emulating Spock’s logic, and falls somewhere in between, much like Jim himself does in many episodes of TOS. (Oh wow, the premise of this essay is that she is like the three of them!)
Secondly, Saavik swears! If this isn’t parallel to McCoy I don’t know what is. In TWOK, we hear her say “Damn” on the bridge, but it doesn't end there. On Hellguard and afterwards, she quite often uses Sonabastard! as an expletive and as an insult. She also, once she has been told the story of Amok Time, calls T’Pring a bitch, quote here:
"She was a bitch!"
"That is, among other things, inaccurate. The term refers-"
"Oh, I know what it refers-and that's what she was! What she did was bad!" Saavik stopped in the lane and stamped her foot, temper brewing. "You say it is bad to hurt people, but she made people hurt each other! That is much badder! She was a bitch!" Spock didn't trust himself to comment; he came perilously close to agreeing with her.
That whole sequence illustrates a sense of justice she shares with both Jim and Bones, as well as an impulsive mouth and anger. But most importantly, it illustrates her kindness and empathy, a trait she also shares with McCoy, albeit once again often shrouded in grumpy care for the doctor and in righteous anger in Saavik.
To continue, she can also seem sassy, a trait I have also mentioned in relation to Spock, but can apply to Bones as well.
And to no one's surprise, I will once again mention stubbornness and self-sacrifice.
Well, this concludes my analysis, thank you for reading, don’t hesitate to add on or correct me in any case.

Hi!! I absolutely love all your art and am fully here for Odysseus and Jesus time but I found your art through your amazing Penumbra Podcast animatics (I still cry pretty much whenever I hear Rain by Ben Platt). Are you still listening? Do you think you’ll ever do more art of them? No pressure at all this was mostly just to express my absolute adoration of everything you post.

kazi baby and maybe sunny on the side idk if she has enough in canon for an ask on her own
Oh you know it I want to talk about Kazuhira Miller. Of course I do.
(my favorite Sunny moments are all of mgrec and jomo am I allowed to answer that. Loved her there the writers did such a good job. I wish we were friends.)
First impression
Honestly, I don't think I took that much notice of him in his first appearance? I saw him in pw first, and in the beginning he is just a guy idk. The ending of peace walker and his tapes made me go a bit feral over him though. just a little.
Impression now
I'm in love with his anger issues. He's a scared animal backed into a corner that bites at the hand reaching for him even if it wants to feed and soothe him. I like thinking it gets better with age, but never quite leaves him to some extent, he did think about his revenge on bb for years (even though I think by the end it was less personal and more about. you know. not letting the world explode.)
I really really really like all of Kaz's designs. They're so expressive and tell so much about the mental space he's in. I love how resilient he is throughout all of the shit he deals with and how he passes it on to Dave. What else. There's so much more honesty I talk a bunch about Kaz in other asks, nothing else I haven't mentioned before comes to mind right now.
Favorite moment
Him almost killing himself and bb with a grenade. Showstopping. Brilliant. Never done before. All of first encounter honestly it does so much for him as a character. His tapes where he talks about his childhood too. Every Kaz moment is kind of my favorite I think. I like his lines as Master Miller where he tells Solid he should survive and about cheese fondue and stuff.
Idea for a story
I'm afraid I tie him to Ocelot too much because I love their dynamic. A big fic during the nine year gap where they do a bunch of dumb shit and make Diamond Dogs and kiss is the main one I guess. They go to a casino and beat the shit out of each other one (1) time and beat the shit out of other people many times. So much more bullshit happens but im not getting into that right now. I also have a story with the main focus on Paz in mind, but he's also there a lot, I just want them to be friends.
Unpopular opinion
He can be impulsive but he is a lot more rational than what people often portray/describe him as I think. Also, almost all interpretations of him in v I've seen feel kind of. wrong. Yes, he's traumatized and paranoid, but he is not a *mess*, not in a way he is often viewed. I already said about how I think Kaz's designs are very expressive, and there was this really cool post (don't really know where it's now unfortunately, don't think I reblogged it) about how his facial hair in tpp isn't him giving up on shaving, it's him having a fucking designer stubble that was a rising trend at the time. This, coupled with the fact that he wears so many layers (of also fancy clothes), carries a gun on him at all times, and orders people around as if it were his base (it is) and his soldiers (they are) is exactly the opposite of a man that gave up on his life. It isn't his low point. I headcanon the actual lowest low point in his life being somewhere during bb's coma, and by v he has gotten over it. It was a really long time, and they needed to move on to get things done, so he did. He didn't really need Snake by the time he gets back, I think. Not anymore. It was purely sentimenal by then, plus wanting revenge. And then not even that.
Favorite relationship
Oh would you really make me choose. Ocelhira for all the reasons listed here and so many more. Him and bb for all the baggage they have. Him and V for all the baggage they don't have but think they do because Zero is insane what was that plan. Him and Solid even though they have almost no screentime together. Everyone who ever interacts with him is my favorite relationship because it's Kazuhira Miller. Sorry for being abnormal about him.
Favorite headcanon
Transfem Kaz maybe, but I don't write or think about him with it in mind a lot of the time. Also I think he lost the hand in Ground Zeroes, it makes sense with him bringing up losing limbs and the pain being a reminder of what was taken from him nine years ago in his helicopter speech.
Bonus
Okay, more seriously about Sunny. Everyone always draws her so cheerful and outgoing aka closer to how she's in Rising I assume, that I didn't really expect that she'd be essentially kind of a shut-in in 4. She's a scared anxious child who is also a prodigy, and they are so fucking mean to her there. Made me honestly pretty sad. Though a lot of it might have been the stress everyone was under. I haven't gotten to her in mgr yet, but it makes me happy that things get better for her, like everyone always wanted.

Time for another ATWQ theory. This theory contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the entirety of the fourth volume, so tread with caution. Content warnings for semi-graphic discussions of violence. Long post. I cannot stress how long this post is.
I think Ellington killed Qwerty.
Qwerty’s death is perplexing. His neck wound has thrown me off for years. It’s deep and it’s prominent enough to produce a “terrible stain“. And yet, we’re told the weapon that did him in was a poison dart, shot by Stew Mitchum. I don’t believe this. I believe Qwerty was as good as dead before Stew even had the chance to shoot.
The order of events
Let's break the scene down.
More murmuring, more rattling. “… a good evaluation,” Theodora finished, in the same voice she’d used to make me go to bed early. “You haven’t earned a good evaluation,” Qwerty said sharply. “I’ll tell you what I’ve earned,” Theodora said, and then she said something else I couldn’t hear, in the quiet tone. Qwerty heard it, though. The librarian now sounded less steady and precise and more frightened and anxious, or perhaps I was hearing my own fright and anxiety. “What are you doing?” he cried, and then there was a loud, shattering noise that sounded so close I thought the bottle had broken against my ear. Qwerty screamed, a wild, loud sound he never would have allowed in his library, and then I don’t know exactly what happened next because I dropped the bottle. “What is it?” Moxie asked me. “What’s going on?” “Let’s find out,” I said, moving to the door. “I can’t,” Moxie said. “I need to lie low, remember?” I remembered and said so, then hurried out of the compartment and found myself in a narrow corridor, clattering with the noise of the train and full of nobody but me. (ATWQ4, Chapter 4)
So, in order:
Qwerty exclaims "What are you doing?"
The window breaks
Qwerty screams
Lemony drops the bottle
Lemony enters the room several seconds later
This is very interesting to me, especially because Qwerty asks his question before the window breaks. I'd imagine that the window would break first, then he'd ask the question, and then he'd scream.
Qwerty's exclamation
“What are you doing” is an odd thing to say when a child comes in through your window. To me, it would make far more sense to say something like “What is he doing here” or simply “What the hell”. “What are you doing” is a phrase that seems directed at someone in the room, someone who Qwerty could see and could hear him. Taking context into account, this sounds directed at Theodora - she tells him something in a low voice, he reacts with fear, he is found dead. But I believe this to be a red herring. Because, as we find out later, there was someone else in the room - Ellington.
That's not how poison darts work
“I saw S. Theodora Markson shoot Dashiell Qwerty with a poison dart.” “You did no such thing,” I said. (ATWQ Chapter 6)
“Hangfire lurks in the background,” I reminded her, “imitating people’s voices and making mysterious phone calls. He doesn’t do anything himself.” Ellington poured the coffee. “Well, this time he did,” she said. “He shot Qwerty with a poison dart and threw the weapon out the window. Then he slipped into a nearby compartment and frightened the librarians into serving as false witnesses.” (ATWQ Chapter 8)
“I’m sure it was heartbreaking,” I said, “for the law to do something so lawless. But they were protecting someone important to them—their darling little boy. It was Stew Mitchum who clung to the railings of The Thistle of the Valley, shot Dashiell Qwerty with a poison dart, and then escaped into a compartment full of librarians scared into hiding the truth.” (ATWQ Chapter 11)
Over and over, when it comes to the murder, everyone agrees that it was a poison dart.
We all love our poison darts. A major reveal in TPP, and now they’ve come back again, like history rhyming. But a poison dart should not leave a neck wound like that. In the Netflix adaptation of TPP, there’s a small prick, and then Olaf’s father falls over. There is no blood involved.
Poison darts also have a very small tip. Even if Stew had missed his shot and the dart had run across Qwerty’s throat instead of hitting the side, I don’t think the wound would have been deep enough to kill. It would have bled if the angle was right, but what Qwerty’s death is described as sounds much more like a throat slash than a dart shot.
Imagine a throwing dart. Imagine throwing that dart to a dartboard. Now imagine how precisely someone would have to stand between you and the dartboard in order to have it run the length of their throat but not get stuck in the side. Now imagine trying to do that in a moving train car, with you on the outside of the train. Not only is it a highly improbable (if not outwardly impossible) shot, even a poison dart shot from a dart gun would not be able to go that deep.
Your honor, that was not the murder weapon.
Even if it was I don't think Stew couldve made that shot anyway
I read for quite some time before I was distracted by a noise that sounded like a rock being thrown against the wall, just above my head. I looked up in time to see a small object fall to the table. It was a rock, which had been thrown against the wall, just above my head. It would be nice to think of something clever to say when something like that happens, but I always ended up saying the same thing. “Hey,” I said. “Hey,” repeated a mocking voice, and a boy about my age stuck his head out from behind a shelf. He looked like the child of a man and a log, with a big, thick neck and hair that looked like a bowl turned upside down. He had a slingshot tucked into his pocket and a nasty look tucked into his eyes. “You almost hit me,” I said. “I’m trying to get better,” he said, stepping closer. He wanted to tower over me, but he wasn’t tall enough. “I can’t be expected to hit my target every time.” (ATWQ1, Chapter 4)
While Stew may be morally capable of shooting a man (we see him go from firing rocks at birds to physically beating Lemony in the span of a few months), he may not be physically capable. Standing still, Stew Mitchum failed to shoot Lemony with a slingshot. And given that Stew was supposedly climbing on the outside of a moving train before swinging in through a window and taking the shot, I call bullshit. This would require an insane amount of coordination and skill, which Stew does not have.
Putting it all together
So, if it wasn't Stew, then it was either Ellington or S. I already believe S didn't do it. She wanted something from Qwerty, and killing him was only going to make her evaluation worse. She wasn't above threatening him, but I believe she was above killing him.
“Ellington Feint and Dashiell Qwerty shared Cell One,” Moxie said, typing it as she realized it, and then she stopped and looked at me. “She must have killed him.” I thought of Ellington dangling out the window of the train, and shook my head. “I know how you feel about Feint,” Cleo said to me. “We all do, Snicket. But if Theodora is not the murderer, then Ellington Feint must be. There was no one else in the compartment.” (ATWQ4 Chapter 11)
So it comes back to this. If it wasn't Stew from outdoors, and it wasn't Theodora from inside, it has to have been Ellington. And I believe I have the motive.
I sat up in bed and quickly turned the light on. I knelt beside the old-fashioned phonograph and looked carefully at it. It could be anybody’s, I told myself. It looks like Ellington Feint’s, but that doesn’t mean it is. I picked it up and turned it over and then saw a word, just one word stamped into the machine, right where the arm with the needle lay waiting to make the music play. It was the wrong word. It made me take three steps back. (ATWQ3, Chapter 5)
“I believe Hangfire would kill Ellington Feint if he could,” I said with a shiver, “and Ellington knows it.” (ATWQ4, Chapter 11)
Ellington likely knows Hangfire is her father, she just doesn't want to admit it to herself. She uses the phonograph far more than Lemony does, and if he knows, so does she. And if she also knows that he could kill her without much hesitation, then that gives her reason to get into his good graces.
And then there’s the one, I thought, who has stolen more sleep from you than all the rest. Ellington Feint, like me, was somewhat new in town, having come to rescue her father from Hangfire’s clutches. She’d told me that she would do “anything and everything” to rescue him, and “anything and everything” turned out to be a phrase which meant “a number of terrible crimes.” (ATWQ4, Chapter 1)
Who's to say she didn't work her way up to murder?
A hypothetical scene
So, Ellington and Qwerty are in the same cell. Kit is in the other cell. S is talking to Qwerty. The Mitchums are present. Here's what I think could have happened.
While Qwerty and S are talking, Ellington comes at him. He yells "What are you doing?", a statement directed at the person sitting next to him, and not someone coming through the window. Stew comes in, ready to attack, but this serves more as distraction than anything. Ellington, with a weapon actually meant to cut a throat, gets at Qwerty and he screams. Outside, Lemony drops the bottle, avoiding the sound of Qwerty's death gurgles.
Then, Ellington's deal with the Mitchums becomes silence about Stew's involvement as opposed to Stew murdering someone. She leaves, and likely discards the weapon out the window like everyone assumed Stew did with the darts. Stew does his threatening and Ellington slinks off, leaving Theodora, the Mitchums, and Kit in the room. Theodora is too stunned to speak, possibly rethinking her choices up to this point, the Mitchums are kept silent by their son, and Kit does not have anything to say.
Events on the train carry out as they do, the second conspiracy unfolds, Hangfire is revealed and then subsequently killed, and then eventually Kit and Ellington wind up in the same cell, shaking hands, two orphans who have been taught to kill.
How it works thematically
ASOUE and ATWQ both convey unreliable narration in different ways. ASOUE is a man reconstructing events he was not present for, and ATWQ is a man looking back on one of the most traumatic events of his childhood. He’s bound to get things wrong in both, and I believe that he is wrong about this scene because he’s falling into the biases he had when he was young.
It would be easy for him to assume that Stew killed Qwerty. It's easy for the audience to assume it, too. We know Stew's history of violence and his hatred towards Qwerty. It makes sense if you don't look too deep into it. The whole event was incredibly stressful, and Lemony was still so very young. Even if he had come to a different conclusion, he may not have wanted to consider it. It’s possible that these inconsistencies are the result of him wanting to tell the facts of what happened while also not wanting to acknowledge that Ellington killed Qwerty.
Or maybe I’m just overthinking things :]

In the final weeks of 2024, Taiwan’s parliament once again turned into a pugilistic arena, as ruling-party lawmakers brawled with their opposition counterparts over barricades of furniture at the chamber entrances. It was at least the fourth such bust-up in 2024. Legislative brawls have a long tradition in Taiwan, but mostly they’re performative flailing. The fighting in 2024 saw lawmakers exchange punches, wrestle, throw water bottles, and even saw a male ruling-party legislator tackle and throw a female opposition counterpart to the ground.
As appalling as it was, the clashes were almost all instigated by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which still holds the presidency but is the minority in the legislature, where the opposition holds 62 out of 113 seats.
The ruling party’s continuous use of violence in the legislature and rallying of the public against the opposition and the legislature is undemocratic and reminiscent of heavy-handed tactics used by regimes in partly democratic states. The DPP and its supporters have tried to justify its actions by making wild claims about how the opposition is trying to create a parliamentary coup and “parliamentary dictatorship.”
In some ways, the situation resembles South Korea, where now-impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law on Dec. 3 due in part to his irritation at the majority-controlled legislature. Incredibly, the DPP released a post on social media soon after Yoon’s martial law announcement that night implying support. It quickly withdrew that post, but not before people took note of it, which led to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te having to reassure the public that the DPP did not support martial law.
Taiwan’s turbulent domestic politics have gone largely unnoticed despite the island sitting on a geopolitical fault line. The legislative fight on Dec. 20 occurred because the DPP was trying to prevent a vote on the third reading of several amendments that were eventually passed.
Back in May, legislative fights broke out after the DPP desperately tried to prevent a vote on amendments that would increase the power of the legislature and require the president to address the legislature, in essence seeking to both bolster the body and hold the president more accountable. They were passed by the legislature, but instead of signing them into law, Lai sent them to the Constitutional Court, which subsequently rejected most of the their powers. There have also been “smaller” fights in the legislature in the months in between, for similar reasons.
In addition, there is a pro-DPP protest movement that started in May that on Dec. 20 even tried to break into the legislature while it was in session, encouraged by several DPP legislators.
Besides legislative brawls, the government is also taking on the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), the smaller of Taiwan’s two main opposition parties, indicting its founder, Ko Wen-je, a popular former Taipei mayor, on corruption charges related to a construction project during his mayoral term as well as funding for his presidential campaign last year. In the final week of December, prosecutors demanded that he be sentenced to an astonishing 28.5 years, after having held him incommunicado since September.
Ko was granted bail by the Taipei District Court, which led prosecutors to appeal to the High Court, which asked Ko to return for another bail hearing. Ko was granted bail a second time by the district court, which again led to prosecutors arguing for him to be brought back for a third bail hearing within a week. This time, on Jan. 2, Ko was ordered to return to detention.
The DPP and its supporters claim aggressive legislative antics are necessary to prevent certain bills or amendments from being passed that might undermine national security, but this is suspiciously opportunistic. After all, each of these bills and amendments reduces the political power of the DPP, whether by increasing scrutiny of the president, expanding legislative powers, or raising the threshold for launching recalls of elected politicians in positions where the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) currently holds more offices.
That the KMT and TPP usually team up in the legislature, ensuring they can pass or vote down whatever bills they want, may be infuriating to the DPP, but that is how democracy works, specifically a divided government, which the US and even Taiwan itself has had several times. The DPP has relied heavily on the anti-China card while neglecting key problems such as energy, housing prices, and traffic deaths during the past few years, which saw it losing heavily in the November 2022 local elections.
Although the DPP lost the legislative majority in the national elections last January, the DPP’s Lai won the presidency, but only with 40 percent of the vote, despite facing two opposition candidates including Ko. It’s a situation reminiscent of South Africa, where the incumbent African National Congress (ANC) party also retained its presidency in last year’s election—but with only 40 percent of the vote. This required the party to form a coalition, but more importantly, to put aside its pride and work with the Democratic Alliance, the main opposition party that has starkly different views from the ANC. Taiwan’s DPP, in contrast, has eschewed any reconciliatory or cooperative approach with the KMT and TPP.
All this bickering, whether in the political, legal, or physical arenas, is extremely worrying. It has fostered a dysfunctional political climate and escalated societal tensions, and it now threatens to undermine democracy.
For example, Taiwan’s highest court, the Constitutional Court, has had seven vacancies after seven justices finished their terms last October. However, the legislature blocked all seven of Lai’s nominees in December, so the court, which usually has 15 justices, remains only just over half full.
Meanwhile, the government insists that one of the amendments passed on Dec. 20, the proposed increase of funding for local governments at the expense of Taipei, will undermine increased defense spending that it argues is essential for preparing for a future conflict with China.
Another amendment that raises the threshold for holding recalls against elected officials has been accused by the DPP of taking away the right of the public to hold politicians to account. Yet in Taiwan, recalls have been wielded in a retaliatory and petty manner as political weapons rather than as legitimate means of kicking bad politicians out of office, and the opposition’s proposals such as requiring signatories of recall petitions to provide photocopies of their ID cards are not unreasonable.
While the latter two amendments still have to be sent to Lai to be signed, an amendment that raises the minimum quorum for Constitutional Court hearings was promulgated on Jan. 23, though not before initially being sent back to the legislature for a revote. This was rejected by the legislature, so Lai had no choice but to implement the amendment, which came into effect later that week. However, both Lai and the DPP’s legislative caucus have said they would call on the Constitutional Court to review the amendment, which means further legal wrangling.
The detention of Ko after his third bail hearing caused the TPP to hold a rally to denounce what it claims is political persecution. A massive crowd of 150,000 gathered in Taipei on a cold Saturday on Jan. 11, a resounding demonstration of mass public discontent with the DPP, especially given that the TPP is only Taiwan’s second-largest opposition party. At the rally, the TPP slammed “green authoritarianism” (green is the DPP’s color) and warned that if the DPP could use the judicial system against Ko, it could go after any other politician. KMT politicians also appeared at the rally, further solidifying the two parties’ informal alliance.
In early January, the DPP legislative caucus whip threatened that the party might seek to recall over 40 KMT and aligned independent legislators, while the KMT replied that any such attempt would be met in kind. The DPP has since  initiated petitions to demand recall referendums for over 30 opposition lawmakers, with the KMT also doing the same for several DPP legislators.
Engaging in violence in the legislature to prevent bills from being passed, launching what many see as a political witch hunt against the leader of the third party, and attempting politically motivated recalls to target dozens of opposition lawmakers is a terrible look for any self-respecting democracy, much less one that is considered by some as a model in Asia. These dysfunctional domestic politics are not just embarrassing, but damaging for Taiwan’s stability.

Our Unresolved Problem(s)
Problems unresolved are not unlike cancers that fester and fester until they burst with pain and devastation. The longer they fester, the greater the pain, the greater the devastation. Such it is with our great nation, a nation of many problems—currently, it seems, tired, broke, hungry, polarized, and twisting in the winds.
To solve a problem, any problem, one must first identify it, get to the absolute root of the matter, decide what to do about it, and do it—too often a problem in and of itself. For far too long, we the people of the United States of America haven’t done this, preferring to shift our problems to a “back burner”, dealing with them with temporary “fixes”, passivism, and procrastination, which has cost us dearly.
I submit to you that in these, the greatest times in the history of civilization, the two greatest problems confronting our nation today are a lack of concerted direction and xenophobia, i.e. racial discrimination. We have many serious problems before us—very serious; but, before they can be effectively resolved, we must above all, first resolve these two.
I have discussed this in prior postings to this blog, from various aspects. We are heading in a direction, if we are not already there, wherein we are being ruled by an oligarchy of the Corporatocracy and Power Elite which, contrary to our presently being a democratic republic “of the people, by the people, and for the people”, the extent of our freedoms will be determined by them. This is just not The United States of America. This is a global thing. Even now many of the rules under which you and I live are under the control of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Agenda 21 of the United Nations, etc. which transcends national boundaries. Even now, our government is negotiating so called Free Trade Agreements in secret (I’m thinking specifically of the Trans-Pacific Partnership [TPP], which will affect jobs and living standards for millions of us). We the people will have no say in it. Some will tell you we freely elected those who facilitate this, our Congress. We did? Keep in mind all the money which flows into the coffers of our representatives through the lobbyists of these Corporatists. Some even write the rules which go into these agreements. Does your representative answer your phone calls? You can bet on it. He, or she, answers theirs.
In 2013, Keynesian economist Joseph Stiglitz, himself a renowned economist, warned that the TPP presented “grave risks” and it “serves the interests of the wealthiest”. Organized labor in the U.S. argues that the trade deal would largely benefit big business at the expense of the workers in manufacturing and service industries. The Economic Policy Institute and the Center for Economic and Policy Research have argued that the TPP could result in further job losses and declining wages. In December 2013, 151 House Democrats signed a letter written by Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and George Miller (D-Calif.) opposing the “Fast Track”
Let me briefly explain what is meant by the “Fast Track”. From Wikipedia, “the fast-track negotiating authority for trade agreements is the authority of the President of the United States to negotiate international agreement that Congress can approve or disapprove but cannot amend or filibuster. Also called trade promotion authority (TPA) since 2002, fast track negotiating authority is a temporary and controversial power granted to the President by Congress.” Wikipedia also states that “The authority was in effect from 1975 to 1994, pursuant to the Trade Act of 1974, and from 2002 to 2007 by the Trade Act of 2002. Although it expired for new agreements on July 1, 2007, it continued to apply to agreements already under negotiation until they were eventually passed into law in 2011. In 2012, the Obama administration began seeking renewal of the authority.”
You can read for yourself in Wikipedia a history and summary of the ongoing Trans-Pacific Partnership. This is just one event going on with the Corporatocracy and Power Elite, our Shadow Government. There are many more; and, in my mind, they are not in favor of the people—only the 1%, the very very rich and elite. Whether you believe in God or not, God made people. People made business. Business is supposed to serve the people. People should be in charge—not business. We must turn this around before we become their serfs.
I submit to you this is the greatest problem for our nation today. This is not the direction in which we should continue, and we must change that direction now. We the people must take back our country; but, to do that, we must all participate by voicing our demands. We cannot do that with only 40%, or whatever, going to the polls.
As I said above, the second greatest problem for our nation today is xenophobia, i.e. racial discrimination. I will post a candid discussion of this subject in my next blog. I’m sure what I say will be controversial, but it must be said. The successful resolution of almost all our future problems will depend upon the resolution of these two, our domination by the Corporatocracy and Power Elite and our resolution of Racial Discrimination.
Please, think about these things. Do you really want our country/your country to be run by these people—the huge corporations, banks, and the extremely rich and wealthy; or, do you want us to be a democratic republic as per our Constitution, a nation of the people, by the people, and for the people? I tell you. It is going, going, gone—unless you do something about it. You may think this is all a big joke but it isn’t. It really is in your hands. What are you going to do and when? When?

The post about TPP and Touya having died made me think that he, unknowingly, was right on the money when he took the hero name Phoenix. Like, he thought he was just being poetic, but then it turns out that if he does burn to death, he'll eventually rise from the ashes.
He has no idea if he'd come back from dying any other way, but if he can ash himself fast enough from a mortal wound, he can come back.
It's just too bad the respawn time is so long.
Actually fun fact I used that exact Quirk for Sunset Shimmer.
But also the only reason I'm not doing that is because I obviously want to keep the burn scars and all.

Hello! 👋 What do u hc the clothing styles of the unfortunate gen kids as?/what sort of clothes do u think r their favourites? 🧥👔🧣
Unfortunate Gen Clothing's Styles/What Clothes They Wear Headcanons:
Violet: If she's not wearing her iconic dress (which either came from the 1950s or 1960s no one really knows) or her skirt (goes down to her knees, worn with white tights), she will be wearing purple in some way in her clothes (socks, shirt, jacket, etc). Violet also prefers to wear jeans and other durable material trousers with her blouses and shirts. The dress and skirt are the two exceptions.
Klaus: 100% dresses semi-formally. He likes bowties and regular ties, button vests (not sweater vest, thank you very much), chinos and dress pants and pleated pants, button-down shirts, and blazers. That's not to say Klaus doesn't have casual wear; he has a few windbreakers and jeans and regular short-sleeves shirt. He just won't be seen wearing those a lot in comparison.
Sunny: Haven't thought much on Sunny (given she is a baby throughout ASOUE), but I like to think as she grows up, she mainly wears casual clothes. Things like cargo pants, jeans, and shirts with graphics on them. Things that are loose on the body, but not too loose. Oh, that, and hair scrunches (yellow).
Duncan: Enjoys wearing wool/knit sweaters, as well as cardigans and sweater-vests (match with long button-downs) in cool weather a la early spring and fall. For warm spring and early summer weather, he wears striped short sleeves shirt or short button-down shirts, sometimes with a hoodie jacket with a zipper if it's on the colder side. For winter, he'll wear a strong windbreaker hoodie over whatever he's wearing. Regarding trousers, Duncan likes jeans, khakis, corduroys, and sweatpants (that last one is for home though).
Isadora: While she has wool/knit sweaters, she only wears them if it's a very cool/cold day that will remain cool/cold throughout. She mainly wears blouses with the puffy short sleeves, and sweatshirts with graphics on them. She's also the sort to wear double shirts; long-sleeve underneath and short-sleeve on top. On occasion, she will wear dress and skirts; Isadora prefers black dresses and skirts of any style and lengths. Most of the time, she wears Capri pants because she likes showing off her socks.
Quigley: Unlike his siblings, he wears rollnecks/turtlenecks. And unlike his siblings, he tends to cover up. He mainly wears long button-down shirts and sweatshirts, and if he has to wear a short-sleeve shirt, he'll wear a jacket over them. Trousers-wise, he wears sweatpants, jeans, drawstrings, and parachutes. When Quigley wears either his dress or skirt (the dress has long sleeves), he has to wear leggings with them. The only time he'll show his legs and arms is when at the beach because that would make him stand out a lot.
Carmelita. Mainly wears clothes of the color pink, white, and red especially pre-canon and in canon events. Her style here is poofy; she has to wear a poofy dress with ribbons or skirt, like a ballerina skirt (not tutu) or poodle skirt. She never wore pants until TPP. And in post-canon, Carmelita starts to wear more Capris and Pedal pushers (similar to Capris; they go higher up the lower calf), as well as wearing different colors (she got to change it up).
Fiona: Nautical Style Clothes(TM) is her main style. Anything that looks like it's something a sailor or navy person would wear or has a strong sailor/navy vibe to it (think sailor dresses, or the sailor blouse, or the most mainstream of them all, bell-bottoms), she has to get. Having live in a submarine all her life, Fiona finds herself wanting something that reminded her of her former home of the Queequeg. That said, she does has some non-Nautical clothes; overalls, jumper dresses, and rompers.
Friday: Having to wear only white on the Island, living on the mainland and seeing her options has Friday going over the moon with possibilities and combinations. Her main style in the first year in the Land of Districts is a colorful overalls (red, orange, or purple) or colorful denims (red, pink, sky blue), with a sweater (pastel colors usually) or sweatshirt with either her bright yellow or green sneakers.
Beatrice Baudelaire II: I also haven't given lot of thought for Bea II. I do like her wardrobe in Netflix ASOUE.The beret is something I really dig. I like to think she has more in different colors, like grey and white.
I hope you enjoy my surprisingly long answer, dear anon!

About that ask and not pressuring me to write something.
I hope you all can understand that I’m currently navigating my inspiration and writing while coping with the grief of losing someone I loved dearly. This is a difficult time, and it’s affecting my ability to write as consistently as I used to. If I’m not updating or posting something specific, please know it’s not due to a lack of desire or effort on my part. Returning to the rhythm and flow of my writing is a long process, and it’s not always smooth or predictable.
I truly appreciate your patience and kindness as I work through this. It’s not easy, and there are days when it feels overwhelming, but I’m committed to getting there, even if it’s a slow and sometimes bumpy journey. That said, I ask that you please refrain from sending me messages or reminders about fics updates or fics I have to post. I know I can come across as moody or distant right now, but it’s just part of what I’m going through. Your understanding means the world to me, and I thank you for respecting my space and process.
Also, I want you to understand that just because I like a certain headcanon or idea, it doesn’t mean I’m going to drop everything to write it right away. The creative process doesn’t work like that, it takes time, patience, and a lot of dedication. For example, TPP took me a whole year before I even started writing it, and CHB took a year and a half. So, if something I want to write doesn’t come to fruition immediately, please know that it doesn’t mean I don’t care about it or that it’s not important to me. It just takes time to develop and bring to life. I hope you can understand that.
And to the anon who wrote that ask, I understand that you really enjoy my fics, and I truly appreciate your patience and enthusiasm for my work. It means a lot that you’re looking forward to what I create. However, I want to say that sending messages like that—even if it wasn’t your intention to pressure me—can be difficult for me and is not the best approach, not just with me but with any writer. I hope you can understand that a little space and patience go a long way. Thank you for your kindness and support.
