Do you have any tips on how to draw different poses? Any kind of movement just fucks me up so bad 😭😭

hoo boy poses! an eternally difficult frustrating teeth clenching jaw aching part of drawing 🤩 JK but i def get where you are coming from. i was trying to think of the best way to reply to this and just ended up making a whole step by step of my process LOL

BEFORE WE BEGIN THOUGH i should mention that i am NOT a professional, nor have i learned these techniques anywhere other than the internet and so there's obviously room for improvement and this is not the end-all-be-all, just how i personally draw poses ATM.

now with that out of the way! keep reading for my tutorial on posing :D

i figured the best way to show this would be to take one of my old drawings and repurpose it. so:

rayla. january 11 2020 rayla. she looks a lil smug maybe? a lil confident? her arms are crossed and her head is kinda tilted and her expression seems that way, but all in all it's kinda grey. this is the first thing you should do when making a pose for your character:

what is your character feeling?

define it clearly. are they angry? close their pose up, cross their arms. happy? open it up, give them big gestures. lazy or tired? slouching, etc. posing is pretty much just body language so figure out what you want your character to say when they aren't speaking.

now i'll just show what the base sketch for this drawing looks like:

that's fine and all, the building blocks are there, but now i'm gonna redraw it and show what i would do differently now:

what's different about this sketch from the first one? three main things which i will break down!

The Lines

when i say "the lines", i mean the horizontal lines of the body if that makes sense? i'm sure there's an actual term or something, but basically, the parts of your body that can tilt. don't make these parallel! that can end up making the character look unbalanced and unnatural, or stiff if the lines are just flat. in the 2020 sketch, they aren't parallel, but they aren't exaggerated either. the more you exaggerate the differences in your posing, the more dynamic it will look. so in this sketch, i've exaggerated them more. gotta make rayla look real cocky yk

The Blobs

when i used to sketch bases for my characters, it would be a bunch of boxes and rectangles connected by sticks. i stopped doing that and it helped. human bodies are soft and squishy and curvy, we aren't robots with metal edges. drawing the base shapes as blobs personally helps me with getting rid of stiffness in the pose. lots of ppl make the boxy method work though, so if that's what you wanna do, by all means.

another thing i noted is "forget about the limbs". limbs are basically just branches, so if you get caught up in drawing them before their foundation (torso + lower half) is down, it could look wonky. get the basis down first, and then go on with the joints and limbs.

The Line (Singular)

AKA the line of action, which is a very popular term + method for posing. this is basically a line that runs down the spine, and the more bendy/curvy it is, the more dynamic your pose will look. tbh in the sketch i did right now it's not very action-y, but rayla is also just standing there, so if you want to do a fighting pose or something similar make sure the line of action is hella curved. even for stationary poses though, a little curve is helpful.

so! with these things in mind, i redid (extremely very roughly lol) the drawing. let's see the difference:

eyy hows that? she looks a helluva lot more arrogant! lol jk. but we can definitely get a better grasp of her character from the first image than the second. ofc there are other factors at play here like line weight and expression, but nevertheless, a few small tweaks go a long way.

Bionicle dream

Some time ago I had a dream about Bionicle, and wanted to draw it. To be clear, it wasn't '’the’’ dream, I never had one of those. In this dream, I went into the world of Bionicle.

So have a drawing of me and Nokama just walking :)

In that dream, I woke up in some ruined building in I’m guessing Ga-Metru. I think there was a hole in the ceiling, so maybe I fell through there? I for some reason was wearing clothes similar to those I drew in the picture, and had a wooden mask that was painted to resemble Kanohi Pakari.

Anyway, as I was laying confused in the rubble, Nokama came in. She stopped in her tracks when she saw me. We stared at each other confused for a few seconds, and then she finally asked ‘’What are you doing here???’’ And I was like ‘’Girl, I have noooo idea :I’’ My mind kinda skipped a few scenes, but I assume she asked me a lot more questions, and questioned who or what I am... ANYWAY, she ended up taking me on a trip to see Ga-Metru :] And she held my hand the whole dream. I, an almost 20 years old person, was led around like a child on a school trip by matoran Nokama 😭 lol

So I’m listening to Nokama talking about the city, and we’re stopped by no other than Whenua! He explained that he heard about a new weird Rahi in Ga-Metru and came to check it out. Well, I was that weird Rahi turns out lol. Nokama argued with him for a while since I can speak, understand everything they say, and I’m friendly and stuff... In the end he agreed that I’m not a threat or anything BUT WOOPS, someone called vahki on me :] And since both Nokama and Whenua were seen with me, and don’t really want me to be locked up, we raaan awaaaay We ran all the way to Ta-Metru, and ended up bumping into Vakama. So I made three people from the metru team meet prematurely somehow. He, of course, showered us with types of questions like ‘‘what the hell is that thing’' and, ‘‘what are you doing here, and why are you being chased’'. So we roped him in into that mess against his will, and let me tell you he was not happy xD

At some point we got cornered and were hiding behind some building. The three argued how they are supposed to hide me, and what would they even do with me after, and i just kinda stood there and looked at them. But while they argued, I think the floor beneath me broke, and I fell down. They tried to catch me but were too late, and as they screamed after me, I woke up :I If you’re wondering how I remembered all of this, the second I woke up, I lunged for my phone and noted all of this down. No way in hell am I forgetting this >:0 But yeah, it was a wild ride :v I worked on the drawing for a few weeks (university is to blame, I have no time for anything), and I don’t know if it’s presentable or not, but I don’t really care, it’s good enough for me.

I based the height difference on what I found on the internet, and the chart below. The proportions may look a little wonky, because the matoran have funny proportions, and it kinda doesn’t mesh well with my artstyle.

But hopefully it’s not that bad from your perspective 💀

starting off with prince! Ishi and soldier! Mondo :]

im gonna be honest it was somewhat difficult to come up with a decent design for mondo bc I feel like it'd be a bit ridiculous to make it those like cameo soldier type of things that first show up when u google soldier aughddjtkdnt

But it was fun to draw them either way! Mondo would probably have shorter hair if the man bun was down but he keeps it up so that it doesn't get in the way of his face (duh)

As for ishi my only thoughts for him are that he's a prince who wants to make his family name and kingdom better because of his old tyrannical grandfather who used to be king or sumn.

I don't think either of their personalities would change too much, mainly their backstories ofc due to the change of ultimates.

for mondo I believe that when he actually preforms it's more of that outfit but obviously with more details to it (I would have added them if I could but I didn't want to make it more messy). Like he'd probably have some form of the Diamonds logo maybe on the back and some gold designs on the cuffs of his outfits and such!! Maybe his preforming outfit is like the version of his coat where it's white with gold like in his original design yk? In a similar way that Sayaka wants to not give up all that she's worked for to be an idol I feel like Mondo would be that way too. I'd say more but it's this post is already long enough as is jakfjdjf

For ishi I wasn't sure on whether to go in the way where he pretends to have a different talent in hopes to cover his actual talent? Like how they did with Maki, but I just decided to draw him in what he would wear when actually killing someone, the cape to cover himself and the black mask to keep his face unrecognizable ofc. Ironically though I think people would state that even with his mask and hood on the most recognizable thing abt him is his eyes since they're red. On the job he probably tries to keep quiet to make himself unsuspecting but when talking to classmates or outside of it he's probably still just as loud as he is canonically lol

I think PT!Mishima is interesting! One of the first few shuyuu fics I read was a PT!Mishima canon compliant au that sent me down this rabbit hole in the first place lol. It inspired me to try drawing some designs of my own but even after setting it aside for a few months it still doesn't look right to me. A lot of it looks pretty old and wonky now (I tried to imitate persona’s art style and it didn't work out lol) so I don’t think they’ll ever see the light of day. This one still looks passable though: behold, fedora Mishima 😂😂😂

I’m still fond of the concept I have but it’s put on the back burner until I think of better costume ideas. Tbh I think Mishima being a fanboy NPC confidant slaps even harder, especially since he gives you mementos targets so there’s that delicious civilian guy in the chair/superhero angle you could play around with … oh the alluring peril of romancing your PT bf sorry I’ll try not to lead this back to shuyuu again LOL

It seems really hard to write in PT!Mishima into the canon storyline though! The timeline is already so jam packed with palaces and major story events. It’d make the most sense for Mishima to have his awakening during the Kamoshida arc like the others but then again — you already have to deal with Ann and Ryuji’s awakening in that short amount of screen time so it’s like ??? Damn tf do you do :c I think out of all the Shujin students cutting Mishima from the PT roster makes the most sense given his more submissive personality, but there’ll always be a part of me that would love to see him rebel against Kamoshida’s shadow for all the abuse he’s gone through … 😭

🎁 PRESENT - what types of presents would they be most happy to receive? are they good at gift giving?

Colin puts huge value on handmade gifts! It's definitely DEFINITELY the type of gift he'd appreciate the most!!.

Even if your not good at crafts or making gifts he'd still be over the moon about it haha! You could literally draw a smiley face on a walnut and glue straw legs and arms on it and he'd get teary eyed over it HAHA!! He would be like, REALLY HAPPY, to receive a gift from anyone at all LOL! but he does really really treasure handmade gifts most of all :'].

In terms of gift GIVING- COLIN IS PERHAPS THE KING OF IT LOLOLOL!!!

Colin will put alot of work into giving a gift to someone! All of his gifts are handmade and it can take him weeks or even months to make in advance depending on what he's making!!

One of the reasons why he's so good at it is because he will probably cyber stalk that person to find out what they like LMAO!! (or if he knows the person better he might go into their search history too see what kinda stuff they were looking at hhgheha...) On the rare occasion that he atcually knows someone on a personaly HEALTHY level he'd probably have a good understanding of what that person's interests are/what kind of aesthetics they're into!.

While Colin does have a preference for cute pastel aesthetics, he has a HUGE respect for others aesthetic preferences! If your someone who's into punk styles he'd probably customize a leather jacket for you, or if your not into a particular style of outfits at all he'd probably make you a custom keychain or a phone case!

He'd probably wish for something REALLY PATHETICALLY SAD LOLLLLLLLL.... something like ' I wish no one could ever dislike me ' or ' I wish I had the charisma and confidence to talk to anyone no matter the situation '. REAL FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS COLIN 🙄🙄🙄🙄 WHAT ABOUT WORLD HUNGER BOY 😭😭😭😭😭

☁️ CLOUD - a soft headcanon

Colin is a deeply, grossly, mushy romantic person 😭😭😭😭😭 he would LOVE pda and would want to kiss and hug everywhere no matter the place. Like I imagine he'd like to play dumb little... romantic games with his partner like, when their driving every time they stop at a red light or a stop sign they kiss or something like that GHRDH.

I'm not sure if this counts as soft or creepy but he would absolutely 100% know every like and dislike his partner would have, he'd do..questionable things too like: study their handwriting/typing patterns so he can copy it perfectly, memorize their daily schedules, He might even make a 'cosplay' of them if he gets really down bad GAHA. To him he's only trying to become closer to them but to like. literally anyone else I think creepy LOLLL.

💘 HEART W/ ARROW - what traits do they look for in a relationship? do they believe in love at first sight?

OOOHH!!!! This is such a cute question oh my gosh!! 🥺 Gaha!

Colin MOSTLY doesn't believe in love at first sight!! Surprisingly!!! His disbelief comes more out of insecurity then rational though, he'd be scared that if love at first sight WAS real and it DID happen to him, he wouldn't live up to that person's expectations ( aka his appearance is alot prettier then his personality LOL ). He also just doesn't think that could ever happen to him in the first place and the thought of other people finding love at first sight makes him feel kinda jealous so he avoids thinking about it GAHA!! ( Slightly related but if Colin were to get into a scenario where he did end up kidnapping Mc and they ended up in a romantic relationship ( either that be through like. STOCKHOLM SYNDROME OR NOT LLHGGG ) he would claim that "it was love at first sight! ♡" even though that really just means he decided Mc would be an easy kidnap target when he seen them LOL).

The traits that he looks for in a partner are all kinda basic tbh! If not a little sad LOL. He's never had anyone who could be emotionally present for him before so he has alot of trouble atcually coping and dealing with the strong emotions he feels, so he'd want someone who's patient and non judgmental!.

However the biggest thing he would want would be to feel that the person atcually likes him back LOL😭, If he gets delusional enough he can 'convince' himself that the person likes him back ( this works for any scenario, like if he has Mc kidnapped and he ends up really liking them even though Mc CLEARLY DOES NOT LIKE HIM- he'll get real delusional about how they love him back- even if deep down he knows they don't. Also if HE'S the one kidnapped- he'll develop a stockholm syndrome attachment to his captor very quickly hhhhhhhhhh).

Besides that he honestly doesn't seek out specific traits! He's really really open to LIKE. ANYONE WHO WILL LIKE HIM BACK LOL!!!
