Best fantasy football waiver wire pickups for Week 11

Random running backs have been dominating the waiver wire in recent weeks, and we might have our most random batch among our top Week 11 fantasy waiver wire pickups and free agent adds. The Giants’ Wayne Gallman has been a staple of this list (are you all finally ready to pick him up?), but Salvon Ahmed and Alex Collins were surprise leaders in their respective backfields (just like Kalen Ballage was last week) while Cam Akers finally got a chance to make good on all of his rookie promise. The long-term value of these backs varies — as does the value of breakout WRs Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Josh Reynolds and backup QB Jameis Winston — but they’re at least on the pickup radar this week. 

Our full free agent list is packed with players who are leftovers from the previous weeks and are still worth considering. Guys like Malcolm Brown, Cole Beasley, Sterling Shepard, Logan Thomas, and Tua Tagovailoa are available in at least 50 percent of Yahoo leagues, and all have enough upside to merit bench spots, at the very least. We also have our usual Week 11 streaming recommendations at QB, TE, and D/ST, which can be found at the end of this list.

It’s tough to recommend using a high waiver claim on any of the backs mentioned above. Gallman will have some near-term value, but with the Giants on bye in Week 11, he won’t be able to help next week. Collins is likely nothing more than a one-week wonder with Chris Carson (foot) due back next week. Ballage and Ahmed are also on borrowed time, but they could both be plenty valuable for at least one more week. If you’re desperate in Week 11, they’re worth more than Gallman. It’s possible a receiver like Beasley, Shepard, or MVS has more value to a lot of owners, but they either have medium ceilings or, in Valdes-Scantling’s case, a low floor.

Winston might be the toughest call, as most fantasy owners don’t need a QB. However, with the Falcons on tap in Week 11, Winston could be a top-six QB if Drew Brees is out. Is that worth a waiver claim? It could be, depending on your QB situation. — Matt Lutovsky

Wayne Gallman, RB, Giants

Gallman has been operating as New York’s lead back for three weeks now, but he’s still just 49-percent owned in Yahoo leagues. After a big Week 10 (18 carries, 53 yards, two TDs) and news that Devonta Freeman (ankle) will miss at least the next three games, Gallman is poised to be a difference-maker down the stretch. He had 10 more carries than Alfred Morris against the Eagles, including some key carries around the goal line, so while Morris will be involved, this is clearly Gallam’s backfield. New York has a bye next week, but a matchup against Cincinnati in Week 12 will be another chance for Gallman to put up big points. —Matt Lutovsky

Salvon Ahmed, RB, Dolphins

Ahmed quietly led the Dolphins backfield last week, but heading into this week, many expected Matt Breida (hamstring), Lynn Bowden, or DeAndre Washington to be more involved. Instead, Breida remained injured and Jordan Howard and Bowden were healthy scratches, leaving Ahmed to dominate carries. He rushed 21times for 85 yards and a score, seemingly cementing himself as Miami’s lead back until Myles Gaskin (knee) returns. Of course, if Breida is back next week, things could change, but Ahmed is still worth picking up given his workload this week. — ML

Nyheim Hines, RB, Colts

Hines was the star of the Colts’ Thursday Night Football win over the Titans. He was the team’s leading rusher (12 carries, 70 yards) and second-leading receiver (five catches, 45 yards), and he totaled two TDson the day. The Colts have a three-headed monster in the backfield, so it’s tough to know if this carry split will continue, but with the Colts taking on the Packers and their bottom-five run defense in Week 11, Hines will have a chance to be a playmaker. He needs to be owned as a potential standard flex option and possibly better in PPR. —Jacob Camenker

Kalen Ballage, RB, Chargers

Even with Troymaine Pope back, Ballage was the clear leader in the Chargers backfield in Week 10, rushing 18 times for 68 yards and catching five-of-six targets for 34 yards. Ballage’s ascension is mildly incredible given how bad he looked dating back to last season, but the Chargers have clearly found something they likeand Ballage should continue getting a dozen-plus touches every week until Austin Ekeler (hamstring) comes back, which could be several weeks from now. —ML

Jameis Winston, QB, Saints

Drew Brees took a hard hit in the second quarter on Sunday, but after finishing the half, he was relegated to the sidelines in the second half. Winston came in and completed six-of-10 passes for 60 yards, but more important is his upcoming Week 11 matchup against Atlanta’s 31st-ranked pass defense. If Brees is still out, Winston would be worth starting in all formats, and while it’s tough to justify using a waiver claim on it, he might be worth it given his high ceiling in that game. Taysom Hill will also be in the mix at quarterback, but Winston would still have the most upside. —ML

Marquez Valdes-Scantling, WR, Packers

Fantasy owners have been eagerly anticipating the activation of Allen Lazard (core) off the IR, but it turns out MVS might have been the real WR2 for Green Bay all along. After disapointing performances early in the season, Valdes-Scantling has turned it up lately, catching two TDs in Week 9 and four passes for 149 yards and a TD in Week 10. Lazard will be back next week — andtough matchups against Indianapolis and Chicago in the next two weeks will limit the value of all non-Davante Adams WRs — but MVS has proven he belongs on fantasy benches as potential boom-or-bust WR3.–ML

Cole Beasley, WR, Bills

Beasley and the Bills receivers had a good game against the Cardinals’ defense, and he ended up with a team-high 13 targets, 11 catches, 109 yards, and a TD. Josh Allen loved throwing to him in check-down opportunities, but he also looked for him deep on several plays. With games upcoming against the Chargers, 49ers, and Steelers, Beasley should have a chance to be a productive flex play and WR3 in PPR. Grab him now if he’s available — he’s owned in exactly 50 percent of Yahoo leagues at the moment. —JC

Sterling Shepard, WR, Giants

Darius Slayton led the Giants in receiving against the Eagles, but Shepard saw just one fewer target than Slayton. Shepard caught all six of his targets for 47 yards, giving him at least six catches in all five of his full games this year. Shepard should continue to get a lot of attention from Daniel Jones moving forward and has a couple of nice matchups upcoming against the Bengals and the Seahawks. —JC

Jalen Reagor, WR, Eagles

Reagor saw seven targets for the Eagles on Sunday, good for the team lead. He turned them into four catches and 47 yards despite playing against James Bradberry, who has been one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL this season. The first-round pick will continue to see targets as a top option across from Travis Fulgham. The Eagles are playing the Browns, Seahawks, and Packers the next few weeks, so Reagor should be a solid flex play with deep-threat ability in those contests. —JC

Allen Lazard, WR, Packers

Lazard (core) was thought to have a chance to play against the Jaguars, but the Packers once again exercised extreme caution with him and elected to sit him for one more week. He almost certainly will return against the Colts in Week 11, and while that matchup may not be a great one, Lazard is still a potential flex play considering that he scored in two of his first three games this year. —JC

After being largely an afterthought during the first half of the Rams’ season, Akers handled a team-high 10 carries for the Rams and totaled 38 rushing yards, good for the most on the team. While the team’s three rushing TDs went to Malcolm Brown (2) and Darrell Henderson (1), Akers still established that he’s a part of this team’s backfield rotation. He may not be a starter for fantasy teams right away, but if the second-round rookie can continue to earn more work, he could eventually become a flex play in later-season matchups against the Patriots (Week 14) and Jets (Week 15). —JC

Malcolm Brown, RB, Rams

Brown only saw six carries in Week 10, which ranked third out of the Rams’ three RBs. However, Brown played a big role in the red zone and scored twice. He also caught two passes for 18 yards, which was more than both Darrell Henderson and Cam Akers. Brown doesn’t have the touch floor of some of the other players on this list, but he does have the TD-upside of a speculative flex play. If he can earn more carries again or further establish himself as the goal-line back, he will be worth considering as a flex play moving forward. —JC

Jakeem Grant, WR, Dolphins

With Preston Williams (foot) on IR, the Dolphins needed someone to step up as the No. 2 receiver across from DeVante Parker. That ended up being Grant. While Tua Tagovailoa spread the ball around quite a bit, Grant was able to bring in four-of-five targets for 43 yards and a TD. Grant is an elusive speed threat, and with the Dolphins facing the Broncos, Jets, and Bengals in the coming weeks, he could end up being a solid flex play. —JC

Michael Pittman Jr., WR, Colts

Well, it looks like Philip Rivers may have a new favorite receiver. Pittman had a breakout game against the Titans, putting up 101 receiving yards on seven catches and adding 21 yards on a run. The second-round rookie should get better as the season goes along, and if he continues to be the team leader in targets (he had eight on Thursday), he should have a chance to put up some solid numbers. The Colts are taking on the Packers, Titans, Raiders, and Texans in the next four weeks, so Pittman should have a chance to do some damage against those units. —JC

Keelan Cole, WR, Jaguars

Cole had five catches for 47 yards in Week 11, which is decent enough, but it was his two TDs that makes him worthy of being added. He had one as a receiver and one on a 91-yard punt return TD and showcased his versatility. Cole was second on the team in targets (7) and should continue to get looks downfield as long as Jake Luton is starting. The Jaguars are playing the Steelers, Browns, and Vikings in the coming weeks, and all three defenses rank top nine in fantasy points per game (FPPG) allowed to WRs. That’ll make Cole a nice WR3/flex sleeper option. —JC

Tim Patrick, WR, Broncos

Patrick was once again a top-two receiver for the Broncos. He racked up four catches for 61 yards on six targets while Jerry Jeudy outdid him by just six yards during the contest. Patrick has had at least four targets in each of his outings this year, so that gives him a decent floor, and his size gives him TD upside. The Broncos have a tough matchup with the Dolphins in Week 11, but after that, they play the Saints and the Chiefs. Patrick can be flexed in those matchups, as those defenses will likely focus on slowing down the explosive Jeudy. —JC

Jakobi Meyers, WR, Patriots

Over the Patriots’ games in Weeks 7-9, Meyers averaged 10 targets per contest for 7.3 catches and 95.7 yards. He is the clear-cut No. 1 receiver for the Patriots and has demonstrated good chemistry with Cam Newton. The Patriots are playing the Texans, Cardinals, and Chargers the next three weeks, so Meyers could have a strong performance against those teams if he keeps getting looks from Newton. —JC

Rashard Higgins, WR, Browns

Higgins led the Browns in receiving against the Texans. Though the team operated a ground-dominant attack with each Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt getting 19 carries and going for over 100 yards, Higgins put up decent numbers (three catches, 48 yards) and saw four targets, good for the second-most on the team, despite horrible weather conditions. The Browns’ matchups won’t always skew this run-heavy, so Higgins has upside moving forward, especially in a great Week 11 matchup against a weak Eagles secondary. —JC

Breshad Perriman, WR, Jets

The Jets had their full WR corps available for the first time against the Patriots in Week 9, and the returns were excellent for Perriman. He saw the second-most targets (7) and racked up 101 yards and two TDs on five catches. Perriman should continue to be the top deep threat for the Jets, and as long as Jamison Crowder and Denzel Mims are there to take attention away from him in Week 11 against a Chargers defense that has struggled to contain passing attacks this year, he is worth considering as a flex option. —JC

Jordan Wilkins, RB, Colts

Wilkins didn’t have a huge game against the Titans, and he failed to convert a receiving opportunity in the red zone and couldn’t find the end zone on a carry from the two-yard line. That said, he was second on the team in carries (8) and out-gained Jonathan Taylor (seven carries) 28-12. Wilkins will probably continue to be the lead between-the-tackles back for the Colts until Taylor improves or overcomes the rookie wall. With a matchup on deck against the Packers, Wilkins should be added and considered a potential flex play in that contest. —JC

Alex Collins, RB, Seahawks

Collins was the Seahawks’ lead rusher on Sunday with Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde out once again. Collins totaled 43 yards on 11 carries and managed to find the end zone. He’s worth adding in case Carson or Hyde can’t go on a short week against the Cardinals, but it’s worth noting that it seems like Carson will be back. Still, Collins is a good handcuff/rotational back, which are always important in Seattle. —JC

Gus Edwards, RB, Ravens

Edwards has a TD in three straight games and has been averaging 14.4 touches per game since Mark Ingram (ankle) went down with an injury. Though Ingram is back, Edwards still needs to be owned in most leagues. He will still get opportunities with Ingram in the lineup, and if he continues to see goal-line touches, he could be a speculative flex in good matchups and a potential RB2 if either Ingram or JK Dobbins misses more time. —JC

Rex Burkhead, RB, Patriots

Burkhead took over for an injured Damien Harris against the Jets and racked up 67 yards and a TD on 15 touches in that contest. Harris is back for the Patriots (and Sony Michel will be back soon, too), but Burkhead still has some potential value for the Patriots against the Texans in Week 11. The Texans are the worst defense against running backs, and they just let both Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt log 100-plus rushing yards against them. Burkhead isn’t quite in that class, but he could be a flex option if he gets enough touches. —JC

Sony Michel, RB, Patriots

Michel (quad/COVID) is set to return from IR soon, and when he’s back, he could take away some carries from Damien Harris and Rex Burkhead. His first game back will be against the Texans, a team that has allowed more rushing yards to RBs than any team in the league, so if he returns, he’s worth considering as a flex option, as he could find the end zone even if he has just a few touches. —JC

Tony Pollard, RB, Cowboys

Pollard has started to earn more touches in the Cowboys’ offense. In his past four games, he has averaged 10 touches per game for 46 yards. With Ezekiel Elliott being outgained on the ground by Pollard in Week 9 and dealing with a minor hamstring injury, Pollard needs to be kept around as he could get a chance to be the Cowboys’ lead back if Elliott aggravates his injury again. —JC

Jordan Reed, TE, 49ers

Reed was able to catch 5-of-6 targets for 62 yards against the Saints as the team’s top tight end target. The 49ers are on bye next week, but after that, they take on the Rams and then get two favorable matchups against the Bills and Washington, both teams that have had trouble against TEs this year. He can be scooped by TE-needy teams as a potential streamer in the weeks leading up to the fantasy playoffs. —JC

Logan Thomas, TE, Washington

In Week 11, Thomas is taking on a Bengals team that had allowed the second-most FPPG to TEs this year (11.8) before their Week 10 matchup against the Steelers. Thomas has averaged 5.8 targets per game this season and has found the end zone three times. He’s coming off a four-catch, 66-yard outing against he Lions, and he could put up similarly solid numbers against Cincinnati this week. —JC

Dalton Schultz, TE, Cowboys

Schultz ranks 10th among TEs in targets per game (6.1), and in two games before the Cowboys’ bye, he logged 15 targets, 10 catches, and 101 yards despite playing with Ben DiNucci and Garrett Gilbert at quarterback. With Andy Dalton likely to return and the Cowboys taking on a Vikings defense that has been middle-of-the-pack against tight ends, Schultz can be trusted. —JC

Irv Smith Jr./Kyle Rudolph, TE, Vikings

The Vikings are taking on the Cowboys and their weak defense in Week 11. It stands to reason that one of their tight ends will have a solid day against the Cowboys, especially considering their dedication to the run game and play action in the red zone. Irv Smith had two TDs against the Lions in Week 9, but he is out Week 10 with a groin injury. If he’s healthy, Smith will be worth considering as a streamer. If not, it’ll be Kyle Rudolph, who has two 40-yard games in his past three outings. —JC

Taysom Hill, TE, Saints

Hill is only TE-eligible in ESPN leagues, but he could be worth a flier if you’re desperate for TE help this week. His opponent, the Falcons, have allowed a league-high 12 FPPG to TEs this year and while that could benefit Jared Cook, it may also help Hill. The Saints use Hill in a variety of roles, so he has a decent rushing floor and could rack up some catches against Atlanta. He had 54 rushing yards, 21 receiving yards, and 48 passing yards against the Bucs, so if he can post even half of those numbers against a weaker defense, he’ll be a worthwhile streamer. Drew Brees’s Week 10 injury could mean more time at QB for Hill, too, which gives him even more potential value. —JC

Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Panthers

In five of his past seven games, Bridgewater has logged at least two passing TDs. On the year, he is averaging 268.4 passing yards per game before his Week 10 meeting with the Buccaneers. The Panthers are taking on a Lions team that has allowed the 12th-most FPPG to QBs this season, so as long as Bridgewater (knee) is healthy, he should be a solid start against that defense. —JC

Derek Carr, QB, Raiders

In seven of his last eight games, Carr has logged multiple TDs and is averaging over 250 passing yards per game since Week 2. Carr will get a chance to continue his steady play in Week 10 against the Chiefs in what should be a high-scoring matchup in which Carr will have to throw a lot. —JC

Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Dolphins

After a mediocre first start at the NFL level, Tagovailoa found a lot more success against the Cardinals and their weaker defense. He totaled 248 passing yards and two TDs, and he showed off his mobility with 35 yards on the ground. Against the Chargers, he had another two-TD effort through the air. He’s a high-end streamer and against the Broncos, a team that had allowed the 10th-most FPPG to QBs entering Week 10. —JC

Andy Dalton, QB, Cowboys

Dalton (concussion, COVID) should have a chance to return for the Cowboys after missing the two games before their Week 10 bye. Coming out of the bye, the Cowboys are playing the Vikings, a team that entered Week 10 allowing the seventh-most fantasy points per game to QBs (21.7) and has had some issues at the cornerback spot. Dalton, if healthy, should be able to take advantage of this matchup and work his way into streamer territory thanks to the solid offensive weaponry that is surrounding him. —JC

Joe Flacco/Sam Darnold, QB, Jets

The Jets are taking on the Chargers coming out of their Week 10 bye. It’s unclear whether Sam Darnold (shoulder) will be healthy enough to start or if Joe Flacco will be in action once again. That said, the Chargers have been in the top-five of fantasy points allowed to QBs almost all season, so whoever starts for the Jets could be a good streamer, especially considering how Flacco looked with his full complement of receivers (Denzel Mims, Breshad Perriman, Jamison Crowder) available in Week 9. —JC

Los Angeles Chargers D/ST

The Chargers are taking on the Jets in Week 11, which will make them the best defensive streamer in fantasy. The Jets are averaging a league-low 13.4 points per game and only 266 yards per game. The Chargers have had their share of issues on defense this year, but if they Joey Bosa (concussion) back for this game, they should have a chance to force the Jets into a lot of mistakes. Trust them even despite their subpar numbers against QBs this year. —JC

Washington Football Team D/ST

Washington has been a solid defensive unit this season, as they had allowed the fifth-fewest yards per game entering Week 10 (314.3) and they also were averaging the third-most sacks per game (3.4). They get to take on a Bengals team that has struggled to protect Joe Burrow this season. He had been sacked 28 times before Week 10 and had a turnover in four of his previous five games. If Washington’s defensive line shows up, they should be a solid play in a favorable matchup. — JC

Cleveland Browns D/ST

No quarterback had thrown more picks (12) or been sacked more times (32) than Carson Wentz before his Week 10 game against the Giants. The Browns get the pleasure of taking on the Eagles in Week 11 after they did well to limit a more powerful Texans offense. Myles Garrett should be able to dominate a decimated Eagles offensive line, so he could create enough plays to make the opportunistic Browns defense a worthwhile play. —JC

Minnesota Vikings D/ST

The Vikings are taking on a Cowboys team that has scored 19 or fewer points in their past four games and have started three different QBs. The Vikings defense hasn’t been consistent this year, but they will have a chance to be a streamer given the Cowboys’ penchant for turning the ball over (they lead the league with a whopping 20 giveaways on the season). —JC

Cincinnati Bengals D/ST

Washington is averaging the third-fewest yards per game (306.4) and third-fewest points (19.1). The Bengals defense recently limited the Titans and their high-flying offense to 20 points, so they should have a chance to work their way into the streamer category in a favorable matchup against Alex Smith. —JC

Jaguars/ Packers Live Blog

Welcome to today’s live blog of the Jacksonville Jaguars versus the Green Bay Packers. We’re moving the live blog over here from our official Facebook page (facebook.com/904SADLLC) because of the horrendous algorithms over there. Hopefully, more of you guys can see our commentary here and keep track of the game while you’re paying attention to more joyful things during your Sunday afternoon!

12:02: The Jaguars still have a chance to forfeit this game and blame it on the Rona. This embarrassment doesn’t HAVE to happen, you know.

12:33: DE Josh Allen is warming up without a shirt on. That probably means he’ll have 4 tackles in the run game today. #TacklingInTheColdIsAB****

13:01: The Packers won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball. Marrone probably would have elected to defer either way, come to think of it.

13:05: Woah. The defense forced a 3 and out on its opening possession! The Jaguars get the ball at the 37 yard line after a punt return from Keelan Cole.

13:08: James Robinson is having a HELLUVA first drive. He’s gotten the ball almost every play and the chains are moving consistently.

13:10: The Jaguars seventh (7th!) kicker of the year just nailed a 52 yard field goal! 3-0 Jags.

13:17: The Packers are punting on 4th and 7 and Jags RB Chris Thompson is being evaluated for a concussion. The Packers’ punt went inside of the Jaguars’ 5 yard line. Thus far, it’s a defensive struggle with no clear winner. We certainly didn’t see this kind of development coming.

13:24: James Robinson just had two runs that got the Jaguars from their 5 yard line all the way to their 31. Such efficiency. 

13:26: After an incompletion targeted towards James Robinson on 3rd and 3, Logan Cooke punts a ball that lands inside the 5 yard line of Green Bay! We see Doug Marrone has decided to play the field position game this afternoon!

13:32: The Jaguars defense forced ANOTHER Packers punt! However, Andrew Wingard just got a blocking in the back penalty. The Jaguars should start their drive around the 40.

13:36: RB Chris Thompson is cleared for a concussion but his back is now being evaluated. The Jaguars’ current drive just stalled and now they are punting again. Logan Cooke kicks a high one that lands inside the Packers’ 10.

13:45: The Jaguars bring a blitz (oh my!) and Green Bay’s Valdez-Scantling beats Sidney Jones in man coverage to score their first TD of the day. 3-7 Packers.

13:54: Either Jake Luton’s performance last week was a fluke or the Packers’ defense is very, very good. The Jaguars are punting again and the ball landed at the Packers’ 27 yard line.

14:00: THE JAGUARS JUST TOOK THE LEAD IN LAMBEAU ON A KEELAN COLE PUNT RETURN!!!! If you had the Jaguars D/ST on your fantasy roster you are WINNING this afternoon!!!! 10-7 Jaguars!!!!!

14:19: Aaron Rodgers is doing really well against the blitz today. The Packers are driving fast and are inside the Jaguars’ 3 yard line.

14:20: Aaron Rodgers turns a PA Pass play that was designed for Marcedes Lewis into a rushing TD for himself. 10-14 Packers. 

14:27: Jake Luton threw an interception during the 2 minute drill and the Packers ran the ball back all the way to the Jaguars’ 26. Tony Boselli is trying to blame the pick on Tyler Eifert’s route running. TBH, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was actually the TE’s fault. Green Bay should be adding to their lead before this half is all said and done.

14:32: A Billy Turner holding call just saved the Jaguars defense from allowing a passing TD on 3rd and 17.

14:34: After running a WR screen play to gain some yards back, the Packers kick a FG to extend their lead to 10-17. 

14:38: HALFTIME TAKEAWAYS

The Jaguars’ special teams unit has done everything possible to keep this team in the game.

The defense has not played that bad either. Todd Wash and his crew have been able to capitalize on Logan Cooke’s punts and hold the Packers to only 17 points at the half.

Doug Marrone and the offense needs to either put the rest of the game (and clock) into James Robinson’s hands or take the playcalling sheet away from Jay Gruden. Either one is fine with me. James Robinson has 9 carries for 61 yards and there is no reason why Jake Luton should be throwing so much. The stat sheet says that he only has 13 attempts, but the pick he threw when targeting Tyler Eifert shows that he needs a chance play off of the effectiveness of the team’s run game.

This game is still within reach. Ultimately, Dave Caldwell builds teams that are meant to play defense and keep it close until the 4th quarter. As of now, this team is keeping things close going into the 3rd. We’ll see how it all shakes out, but there is a chance to get a win on the road today.  

14:53: Why is Jay Gruden so hellbent on putting the offense into backup quarterbacks’ hands???? The Jaguars are getting ready to punt again.

14:54: Logan Cooke just kicked ANOTHER ball inside the Packers’ 5 yard line. As of now, he has 4 punts for 194 yards with 3 landing inside the 20.

14:57: CJ HENDERSON FORCED A FUMBLE AND MYLES JACK RECOVERED IT AND RAN IT ALL THE WAY INSIDE OF PACKERS’ TERRITORY!!

14:58: A rushing TD by James Robinson got called back by a holding penalty. Drink.

15:00: Jake Luton tosses a TD pass to Keelan Cole in traffic! The Jaguars are actually in this game! 17-17 all after the extra point.

15:11: The Jaguars defense just forced a turnover on downs. This might be the defense’s best game all year. Considering the Colts game saw the debut of a turnover prone Philip Rivers, We’d say today’s performance is way more impressive.

15:17: Is Keelan Cole having the best game of his career today? He might be.

15:20: Another Jaguars drive stalls in this field position-focused slug fest. After a Logan Cooke kick, a random special teamer misses his chance to be a hero and Cooke’s punt goes into the end zone for a touchback.

15:25: SIDNEY JONES JUST PICKED OFF AARON RODGERS!!!!!!! IS THIS THE SAME ROSTER FROM THE PAST SIX WEEKS?!?!?!?

15:28: Wow. This game is tied at 17 going into the 4th quarter. I don’t think anyone had this contest going this way. Not even Todd Wash.

15:31: James Robinson just had his second rushing TD called back by the refs. My goodness, why are they trying to stop J-Rob’s shine????

15:34: The Jaguars’ 7th (SEVENTH) kicker just kicked a FG right down the middle to give Jacksonville the lead on the road!!

15:43: The Packers just drove down with the QUICKNESS and took the lead. 20-24 Packers.

16:01: After a long drive with an odd penalty call/challenge, the Jaguars have to give up the ball again. With 4 minutes left, though, that punt might have been it. We’ll see. 

16:04: Holy crap!!! The defensive line stopped the run when it mattered most!

16:11: 2 rushing TDs called back for holding and two straight sacks allowed during the 4th quarter two minute drill. Terrible day by the OL, man. Too many crucial mistakes are overshadowing the solid day by James Robinson. 

16:13: I was wondering how the Jaguars were going to mess this game up. Apparently, not investing anything into the OL besides a 4th round pick that doesn’t play was it. In the end, it is what it is. The franchise is one step closer to getting its franchise quarterback.

Packers win 20-24 after kneeling a couple of time. T’was fun at least. T’was fun.

2020 NFL Mock Draft-FINAL

April 22, 2020

 ROUND ONE

1. Cincinnati - QB Sam Burrow, LSU

They might as well start working on the contract now. It’s been a long time since we had a slam-dunk pick like this one. The team will need to focus on acquiring an offensive line to keep him from a David Carr-style early collapse though.

 2. Washington – DE Chase Young, Ohio State

I’m still not 100% convinced the Redskins won’t trade this pick away, but if they hold on to it, they’d be ridiculous to pass on hometown guy Chase Young. He’d be an instant star in Washington, which is exactly what they need to start luring fans back into the stadium.

 3. Miami (PROJ. TRADE W/DET) – OT Andrew Thomas, Georgia

Tristan Wirfs and Mekhi Becton were the stars of the Combine, but that’s not what motivates front offices. They want someone who’s excelled on the field, over and over again. Wirfs certainly qualifies there, but Andrew Thomas has been a star at both right and left tackle practically since he first suited up for Georgia. Don’t be surprised if he’s the first tackle off the board this year. Miami gives up picks #5 and 18 to move up two spots).

 4. NY Giants – OT Tristan Wirfs, Iowa

This could be an epic run on tackles starting here. Wirfs can excel at any spot on the offensive line, but the Giants may need his help at left tackle sooner than later.

 5. Detroit (PROJ. TRADE W/MIA) – DT Derrick Brown, Auburn

Detroit could do any number of things with this pick, but I like the current rumor that they’re very intrigued by Derrick Brown. He’s one of my favorite players in this draft, and if you fall in love with a prospect, you take him and damn the criticism.

 6. LA Chargers – QB Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama +

No one expects him to start immediately in LA, where Tyrod Taylor is well liked by the coaching staff. But like his tenure with the Browns, Taylor’s time in the starting role will be short lived. Tua can be brought along slowly as he adjusts to the pro game and heals from his hip injury.

 7. Carolina – CB Jeffrey Okudah, Ohio State

Carolina parted ways with James Bradberry, so they make up for his departure with Okudah, clearly the top CB available this year. If he lasts until pick #7, this will be a steal for the team.

 8. Arizona – OT Jedrick Wills, Jr., Alabama

Kyler Murray is great at running for his life, but he shouldn’t have to. They did re-sign LT D.J. Humphries to a new deal – but only a one-year contract with RT Marcus Gilbert. They seem to have decided to part ways with free agents Jordan Mills and A.Q. Shipley. And in 2021, J.R. Sweezy’s contract expires too.  Loading up on offensive linemen would be a good idea. Wills could either serve as a reserve swing tackle his first year, or they could move Gilbert to guard and insert Wills at right tackle.

 9. Jacksonville – LB Isaiah Simmons, Clemson

Jacksonville needs help at multiple positions, so why not grab the best player available. Simmons might not fit the team’s most immediate needs, but he’s the sort of dynamic playmaker you rebuild your defense around. Whether he lines up at Will or safety, he’ll have an immediate impact with a clever defensive staff.

 10. Cleveland – OT Mekhi Becton, Louisville *

The Browns made a horrible mistake by ignoring their problems at offensive line in the 2019 off-season. They gambled and lost on left tackle bust Greg Robinson (who is currently in legal trouble for allegedly being in possession of a ridiculous amount of pot). Time to correct that mistake. Becton enters the NFL with questions about possible drug use, but that’s nothing new for the Browns.

 11. NY Jets – WR CeeDee Lamb, Oklahoma

The Jets have been targeting left tackles since early in the pre-draft process, but they don’t pull the trigger on a trade up to acquire one of the blue-chip candidates. CeeDee Lamb ain’t a bad fall-back option though.

 12. Las Vegas – WR Henry Ruggs III, Alabama

You need to be flashy if you want to stand out in Las Vegas. There is no player with better big-play potential this year than Ruggs. In a nod to former owner Al Davis, the team eschews the more polished route runner in his teammate Jerry Jeudy for the speediest player available at his position. Ruggs is more than just a fast receiver though; he’s got amazingly-reliable hands.

 13. San Francisco (THRU IND) – WR Jerry Jeudy, Alabama

Losing Emmanuel Sanders hurts a little bit, but the pain recedes when Jerry Jeudy comes to town. Perhaps the best pure receiver in the draft, and he lands with the NFC Champions.

 14. Atlanta (PROJ. TRADE W/TB) – CB C.J. Henderson, Florida

The Falcons move up two spots to snag Henderson away from Denver (they sacrifice pick #95 in the 3rd round to move up). They’ve coveted both Henderson and Jeff Okudah for a while now, and while they don’t possess the ammo to get up for Okudah, they pounce when they see Henderson drop this far.

 15. Denver – LB Kenneth Murray, Oklahoma

The Broncos very much wanted to land one of the top cornerbacks, but Atlanta snaked the last one away. Kenneth Murray is a player coaches can easily fall in love with though. He’s brilliant on the field but he’s even more valuable as a motivational team member. He’s got leadership skills like Jamal Adams and he seems destined to be a great coach someday.

 16. Tampa Bay (PROJ. TRADE W/ATL) – DT Javon Kinlaw, South Carolina

With Tampa spending their free agency dollars on offensive players, they need to focus most of their attention in the draft on that horrid defense. Kinlaw can provide a serious push from the inside to help out the edge players, and he’s got some run-stopping talents to boot.

 17. Dallas – CB A.J. Terrell, Clemson

The Cowboys got hit hard by free agency this year, and 2021 won’t be much easier. They need youth at multiple positions. Start with trying to replace Byron Jones in the defensive backfield. Terrell has great length, speed and experience at a winning program.

 18. Detroit (PROJ. TRADE W/ MIA THRU PIT) – DE/LB K’Lavon Chaisson, LSU

The Lions continue to rebuild their defensive line with an outside pass-rush threat to complement the interior push provided by Derrick Brown. Chaisson on one side and Trey Flowers on the other could be a disruptive force.

 19. Las Vegas (THRU CHI) – LB Patrick Queen, LSU

The Raiders go offense with their first pick; now, the defense. Queen can man the weak side of the linebacking corps and pair with newcomer Cory Littleton to form a speedy, lithe combination.

 20. Jacksonville (THRU LAR) – WR Justin Jefferson, LSU

The Jaguars have many needs, so they could go in any number of directions. Bolstering the receiving corps makes sense though. Jefferson paired with D.J. Chark could prove to be tough to defend.

 21. Philadelphia - S Xavier McKinney, Alabama

The Eagles have many needs along the defensive backfield as free agency is hitting them hard this year and next. McKinney and Grant Delpit are far and away this year’s best safeties; either one could go here.

 22. Minnesota (THRU BUF) – DE A.J. Epenesa, Iowa

Everson Griffen opted out of his current contract, and he’s now entering his 11th year in the league. There is no obvious starting talent on the roster to replace him. Even if the Vikings bring him back on a 1-year deal, having a developmental guy like Epenesa in a rotation behind him makes total sense.

 23. New England - QB Justin Herbert, Oregon

Herbert is a reluctant passer, so I’m not 100% sure he’ll be a fit for Belichick, but the Pats have never been shy about gambling on draft picks. The Pats stick with Jarrett Stidham (at least for now) as the starter until they can assess Herbert’s ability to read a defense and deliver a ball with confidence and anticipation.

 24. Indianapolis (PROJECTED TRADE W/NO) – QB Jordan Love, Utah State

Indy sees Herbert finally go off the board, and they can’t wait anymore to grab their favorite QB. They find a willing trade partner in New Orleans; they have the fewest picks in the draft this year, so they’re happy to trade out of the first and accumulate some extra selections (the Saints get Indy’s #34 and 75 picks). The Colts hope Love can develop behind Jacoby Brissett and Philip Rivers – both are only likely to stick around for one year.

 25. Minnesota - WR Brandon Aiyuk, Arizona State

The Vikings need to replace Stefon Diggs quickly if they want to take advantage of an AFC East without Tom Brady.  Aiyuk can slide into the starting lineup immediately.

 26. Miami (THRU HOU) - RB J.K. Dobbins, Ohio State

Jordan Howard is not a long-term option, and Kalen Ballage has fallen out of favor. The Dolphins want to bolster their backfield, and Dobbins is a darkhorse candidate to be the first RB off the board. Though he shouldn’t be. In hindsight, Dobbins will appear to be the obvious choice here.

 27. Seattle - CB Trevon Diggs, Alabama

The Seahawks need to get back to their Legion of Doom ideals and draft big DBs again. At 6’1”, Diggs will hope to satisfy their craving for a Richard Sherman-type cover corner.

 28. Baltimore - C Cesar Ruiz, Michigan

I love a good curveball. Ruiz displayed tremendous skills at the Combine and made a strong case that he’s the top pure interior lineman available this year. With the retirement of Marshal Yanda, there is a serious need along the offensive line.

 29. Tennessee - CB Jaylon Johnson, Utah

With Logan Ryan in question and Malcom Butler wearing out his welcome, the Titans need to dip into the draft to solve their cornerback problems.

 30. Green Bay - DT Ross Blacklock, TCU

The Packers have had serious problems stopping the run recently. Blacklock has an amazing motor and is highly prized among scouts.

 31. LA Chargers (PROJ. TRADE W/SF) - RB D’Andre Swift, Georgia

The Chargers want to get ahead of Kansas City for their preferred replacement for Melvin Gordon (they give up pick #112 in the fourth round as well as #37).

 32. Kansas City - RB Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin

Kansas City needs more help along the defense obviously, but Taylor put to bed the notion that he has too much tread on his tires with an amazing Combine workout.

 The back door lock on my X-Trail wasn't working so I had to drop it off this morning at Japan Auto to see if they can fix it. Then it was off to Costco to stock up an a few necessities. It's so nice and warm here in Ottawa that I will be able to read Charles de Lint's new book The Wind in His Heart outside.

 Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan #1 - Declan Shalvey (writer) Mike Henderson (art) Lee Loughridge (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). This 5-issue mini has the two stabby heroes with healing factors teaming up to keep a new mutant from being captured by bad guys. Sure, it's a story that's already been told many times but Declan does a good job of keeping the fun factor up so I will keep reading.

 Batman: The Drowned #1 - Dan Abnett (writer) Philip Tan & Tyler Kirkman (art) Dean White & Arif Prianto (colours) Tom Napolitano (letters). There's a gender swap in this Dark Nights Metal tie-in where a woman named Bryce Wayne transforms herself into an evil version of Aquaman's wife Mera. That was unexpected. I like how this issue clarifies why the bad Batpersons are doing what they're doing. It's a basic motivation and not anything new so there's still a chance that I might stop caring about this story and stop reading.

 Kid Lobotomy #1 - Peter Milligan (writer) Tess Fowler (art) Lee Loughridge (colours) Aditya Bidikar (letters). If I had looked at the credits before picking this book off the racks to read I should have expected the extreme weirdness in this comic book written by Peter Milligan. I remember his stint on Shade the Changing Man and what a psychedelic ride that was. This book is loopy too and it was the art that helped me power through to the last page. If you enjoy exploring odd mindscapes you'll like this.

 Thor #700 - Jason Aaron (writer) Walt Simonson & Matthew Wilson, Russell Dauterman & Matthew Wilson, Daniel Acuna, James Harren & Dave Stewart, Becky Cloonan & Dave Stewart, Das Pastoras, Chris Burnham & Ive Svorcina, Andrew MacLean & Dave Stewart, Jill Thompson, Mike del Mundo, and Olivier Coipel & Dave Stewart (art) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). This 50-page epic features Part 1 of "The Death of Thor", but which Thor? There's a lot of them. If you've never read a Thor comic book this is a great place to start. You can tell that Jason Aaron is having so much fun writing these adventures and I am one very appreciative fan. Buy this book.

 Aquaman #29 - Dan Abnett (writer) Stjepan Sejic (art & colours) Steve Wands (letters). Okay, things are starting to go the good guys' way. Evil King Rath is going to get what fer.

 Maestros #1 - Steve Skroce (writer & art) Dave Stewart (colours) Fonografiks (letters). Yay, Steve Skroce is back on the racks and this time he's writing his own book. I loved "We Stand On Guard" and was hoping we'd see Steve's art again soon. This fantasy book is about a young wizard who inherits the title of big kahuna wizard after his Dad is killed. I thought that Geof Darrow did the art for this after turning the first page, but nope, it's Steve just painstakingly drawing up a storm. This new comic book gets added to my "must read" list.

 Champions #13 - Mark Waid (writer) Humberto Ramos (pencils) Victor Olazaba (inks) Edgar Delgado (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Part 2 of "Worlds Collide" has the Champions teaming up with the Avengers to stop the High Evolutionary from destroying the planet. Four groups scatter around the world to save lives but even though they keep the world's tallest buildings from disaster there's still plenty of danger ahead. The story continues in Avengers #673 which hits the racks on November 1.

 Batman #33 - Tom King (writer) Joelle Jones (art) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). You gotta read this. Do you guys have a good chuckle when you get to the last page of a really good comic book because you feel happily amused and think, man I can't wait to read the rest of this story? I do. Few writers can make me do that and Tom King just got added to the list of writers that do. Some fans might not like what's going on with Batman's love life but I think it's great. Part 1 of "Rules of Engagement" has the Bat visiting an old flame and boy, is he going to get burned. Joelle "Lady Killer" Jones did a wonderful job showing the men folk back at the mansion and made my heart swoon with her rendition of Selina. I wish the word balloon person hadn't screwed up on the last page, otherwise this issue was a perfect read.

 Sherlock Frankenstein and the Legion of Evil #1 - Jeff Lemire (writer) David Rubin (art, colours & letters). This spin-ff of Black Hammer is worth checking out if you like that mystery about a team of old super heroes. This story focuses on their super villain enemies and follows Black Hammer's daughter as she goes searching for her father. Jeff Lemire is every bit as clever as Alan Moore at creating neat super characters when Alan was doing America's Best Comics.

 Ms. Marvel #23 - G. Willow Wilson (writer) Diego Olortegui (art) Ian Herring (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Remember the time when Kamala went to Karachi and had a team up with a hero there? Guess who's in Jersey City and attending her high school now? I'm glad Willow did the conversion to metric on the runaway train's speed. I didn't have a sense of what 25 miles per hour feels like. 40 kilometres per hour I get. This was a great way to have the two heroes commiserate while the train rolls along.

 Wonder Woman #32 - James Robinson (writer) Sergio Davila (pencils) Scott Hanna & Mark Morales (inks) Romulo Fajardo Jr. (colours) Saida Temofonte (letters). I found the writing in this issue was as stilted as a bad soap opera script. I don't like how the relationship between Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor is portrayed. I hate that he calls her "angel". I will read the next issue to find out more about Diana's "brother" Jason and to see Emanuela Lupacchino drawing her first issue of this series.

 Groo: Play of the Gods #4 - Sergio Aragones & Mark Evanier (writers) Sergio Aragones (art) John Ercek & Tom Luth (colours) Stan Sakai (letters). And so another great Groo mini ends. This time the last laugh was on the gods.

 Superman #33 - Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason (writer) Doug Mahnke (pencils) Jaime Mendoza (inks) Wil Quintana (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). "Imperius Lex" starts here. With baby Darkseid missing, Apokalips needs a new ruler and it has chosen Lex Luthor. But Lex is a good guy now, right? Maybe he'll find a way to change the Parademons into minions. I like that Lois and Jon are in this story too.

 Incredible Hulk #709 - Greg Pak (writer) Greg Land (pencils) Jay Leisten (inks) Frank D'Armata (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). "Return To Planet Hulk" starts here. Not to worry, they haven't resurrected Bruce Banner (yet). This time it's Amadeus "The Totally Awesome Hulk" Cho crash landing on the planet. There's no holding back when the kid unleashes the junk in the trunk as he battles a tribe of bad guys. All hail the Green Scar. This is a refreshing change of pace.

 Super Sons #9 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Jorge Jimenez & Carmine Di Giandomenico (art) Alejandro Sanchez & Ivan Plascencia (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). "Planet of the Capes" ends here. I much preferred the art of Jorge Jimenez over that of Carmine Di Giandomenico. Carmine's kids don't look like kids.

 Wonder Woman Conan #2 - Gail Simone (writer) Aaron Lopresti (pencils) Matt Ryan (inks) Wendy Broome (colours) Saida Temofonte (letters). There's a #MeToo moment in this issue that I found was unnecessary that made me feel disappointed because this is written by a woman. The crew threatening Diana that way wasn't needed for Conan to be any more protective than he already was. I wondered if it was put in just to titillate male readers or to point out that most men are scum. I did like how the crow girls dealt with the wine besotted pervert in the stands though.

 Invincible Iron Man #593 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Stefano Caselli & Alex Maleev (art) Marte Gracia &  Alex Maleev (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). "The Search for Tony Stark" starts here. Get everything you need to know to start reading this series. It's the rebirth of one of Marvel's iconic super heroes so join us long time shellhead fans and buckle up for a wild ride.

Baltimore also needs pass rusher to help out 35-year-old Terrell Suggs and could use more depth on offensive line, especially if Hurst and Jensen end up elsewhere. Tight end is also trouble spot, given that Watson is 37 and Gillmore has struggled to stay healthy.

NEEDS: Quarterback moved to the top of the list after Buffalo traded three-year starter Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a third-round pick. The deal leaves Nathan Peterman — a fifth-round draft pick last year — as the only quarterback on the roster. Aside from free agency, the Bills are anticipated to select a quarterback in the draft. The defensive front seven could be in store for major overhaul with Williams yet to determine whether he’ll retire, starters Brown and Humber eligible for free agency. Unanticipated hole to fill is center after Eric Woods was diagnosed with career-ending neck injury in January. Bills already addressed needs by signing nine-year veteran CB Vontae Davis and running back Chris Ivory, who is expected to take over as LeSean McCoy’s primary backup.

CINCINNATI BENGALS (7-9)

NEEDS: McCarron won grievance against Bengals, making him free agent and giving team unexpected task of finding backup for Andy Dalton. Bodine has started every game in past four seasons and team would like to keep him. Offensive line is priority after struggling to protect Dalton and open holes for running backs. Eifert has been injury-prone TE but when healthy is one of Dalton’s favorite targets near goal line. Offense finished last in league and needs major all-around upgrade.

CLEVELAND BROWNS (0-16)

NEEDS: S, maybe LT. Cleveland figured to be in market for veteran quarterback, but that changed Friday when team acquired Tyrod Taylor in trade with Buffalo. Arrival of dynamic Taylor would seem to rule out Browns making run at AJ McCarron or any other free agent QBs. Still, team is expected to use No. 1 overall draft pick on a young QB to compete with Taylor or maybe start at some point in 2018. Browns also added wide receiver Jarvis Landry via trade, but would like to add depth at what has been troublesome position. Star left tackle Joe Thomas still hasn’t told team if he plans to keep playing or retire. If Thomas is done, team will need to address replacing future Hall of Famer. Browns have been league’s youngest team past two seasons and need infusion of both talent and experience in free agency.

DENVER BRONCOS (5-11)

NEEDS: After last year’s deflating draft class produced so little, Broncos need upgrades throughout roster but especially on offense. GM John Elway said high-priced WRs Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, both of whom underperformed last season, will be back. That would make for attractive draw for veteran QB. They need to bolster running backs corps and do usual O-line fix, which has become annual rite of spring in Denver. Even with Jake Butt back from ACL surgery, they could use some more tight end prowess. On defense, they’re no longer elite unit that carried them to Super Bowl 50 title, but still very good behind Von Miller, MVP of Pro Bowl. They could use some jolts at linebacker and even in secondary, which for years was among league’s best.

HOUSTON TEXANS (4-12)

NEEDS: Texans look to have finally found franchise quarterback in Deshaun Watson. Now they need to upgrade offensive line to keep him protected when he returns from knee injury this season. They’ll likely let Clark and Su’a-Filo go in attempt to improve with better talent for Watson to play behind. They’ll also decide on Savage or Yates to back up Watson, or if they want to look elsewhere after both players struggled with Watson injured. Texans could also be in market for cornerback if they choose not to re-sign 12-year veteran Joseph.

If they lose Melvin, they could be in market for two cornerbacks.

Multiple WRs and at least one TE are possibilities in free agency and/or draft. Backup QB also needed. Coach Doug Marrone wants to be run-first team and needs explosive personnel outside to reduce and maybe eliminate eight- and nine-man defensive fronts.

If Jets whiff on Cousins, there’s good chance McCown will be back to mentor whomever New York takes with its first draft pick at No. 6 overall. Plenty of holes elsewhere, although Jets are interested in re-signing Claiborne, Seferian-Jenkins and Davis as core players. Help on offensive line, namely at center, proven pass rusher and cornerback will also be high priorities for GM Mike Maccagnan. Running back Matt Forte is retired, so Jets might look for some depth in backfield, as well as on defensive line after releasing disappointing Muhammad Wilkerson.

Steelers as usual are right up against cap; contract restructuring and cutting some veterans would give them wiggle room if needed. 2017 in Film: A Retrospective and Ranking

So tomorrow’s the big day, right? The day when Hollywood’s elite gather and decide what films are the best?

In genre fandom there’s a reflexive instinct to reject the Oscars, which has long dismissed (sometimes truly impressive) efforts by science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other genre filmmakers. I totally get that, even if it’s not always true (just look at this year’s nominees). But rather than grouse and complain about how we disagree with the Academy, I thought it would be more rewarding to talk about how we felt about the cinema of 2017.

It’s been a really good year, I think it’s hard to deny, even if Hollywood itself (and the world in general) has had a pretty awful one. Even some of the worst films I’ve seen were pretty darn good and the best were truly terrific. It’s also been a pretty stand-out year for genre films in particular, with some great additions to the horror and superhero canon in particular. With that in mind I’ve ranked every 2017 film I’ve seen and invite others to do the same.

19. Ayla by Elias

Ayla is one of two feature-length films I saw at Portland’s annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival at the Hollywood Theatre, an experience I can heartily recommend to anyone in the Pacific Northwest who loves horror or weird fiction. The basic premise of Ayla is that a young man who lost his sister as a child and is unable to let go of her memory finds what appears to be an adult and strangely mute version of his sister, who comes to occupy a central place in his life as he neglects every other part of his life, including his living family and friends. Essentially, Ayla is a story about loss and how it can consume us.

Out of all the debut films I saw this year, Ayla is unmistakably the weakest but that doesn’t mean its bad by any means. The central hook driving the story is a compelling one and the performances given by the film’s mostly unknown cast (Nicholas Wilder, Tristan Risk, Dee Wallace, and Sarah Schoofs in the lead) are actually quite good and do a great job of drawing you into the narrative. Unfortunately, the movie just kind of ends abruptly and there’s never really a satisfying explanation for why the protagonist is so obsessed with his dead sister (his other family members have all moved on… why hasn’t he?). Still, it’s a nice showcase for the cast and the director’s skills which are not insubstantial.

18. The Lego Batman Movie by Chris McKay

When it was announced that Warner Bros. had decided to make a spin-off of The Lego Movie centered on Will Arnett’s comically self-obsessed version of Bruce Wayne there was a fair amount of skepticism. Arnett’s Batman was funny but would the joke perpetuate itself for a full movie without becoming dull? The good news is no and The Lego Batman Movie not only is funny but actually tells a pretty decent story. The bad news is that it’s still mostly forgettable.

There’s nothing particularly wrong with The Lego Batman Movie but I have to confess that nearly a year later I barely remember it. I remember all the plot beats and who all the characters were but I don’t remember how I felt watching it. I remember the narrative theme and thrust of the story (“it’s braver to let yourself feel things for other people than to go it alone”) and I appreciated the thought behind it but it didn’t stick with me. Maybe that’s because I already feel that message has been told in more interesting ways. Maybe it’s because the movie never quite escapes the impression of being a merchandising cash-in, unlike The Lego Movie. I liked The Lego Batman, but ultimately I can’t give it more than a solid C in retrospect.

17. They Remain by Philip Gelatt

The other feature film I saw at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival, They Remain is an adaptation of Laird Barron’s “-30-,” directed by Philip Gelatt, perhaps best-known to science fiction fans as the screenwriter of Europa Report (an excellent film I also saw this year, but which came out many years earlier and so doesn’t qualify for this list). They Remain focuses on a pair of scientists (William Harper Jackson and Rebecca Henderson) who are sent by a nebulous corporate employer to study strange animal behavior at the former site of a murderous cult that made headlines years earlier. A dark and moody film, They Remain examines the nature of cults, the effects of isolation, and the relationship between humans and their environment.

I was pretty excited to watch They Remain, especially since it was the actual premiere of the film, shown to audiences for the first time. Europa Report really surprised me when I checked it out earlier this year and I was eager to see what Gelatt’s newest film looked like. For the most part, I was very pleased with what I got. Gelatt does a great job at getting into the head of his lead character and the sense of dawning paranoia and psychosis that begins to overtake him at the film’s story progresses. You feel, like him, that reality is unravelling around you. Unfortunately, the film also has a last-minute twist (which I assume is in the original story as well) that didn’t quite work for me and I never was quite sure whether the cult’s past activities were a red herring or an important plot point. Then again, part of the appeal is likely considering such questions for yourself.

16. Blade Runner 2049 by Denis Villeneuve

Man was there any movie this year sci-fi nerds were more hyped for and the general public just didn’t care about? Blade Runner 2049 has at this point become somewhat infamous for being hyped everywhere by every nerd site imaginable and then just sort of dropping to the sound of crickets chirping. Which isn’t to say it wasn’t very well-received in some quarters. Hyperbolically (in my opinion) some have proclaimed it to exceed the original Blade Runner (itself a notable flop at the box office but darling among sci-fi fandom) in every way. Personally? I found Blade Runner 2049 a beautiful and ambitious but ultimately failed endeavor towards profundity.

The frustrating thing about Blade Runner 2049 is that it starts a lot better than it ends (far from the only 2017 film to suffer from that problem). The opening sequence where K visits the old replicant to “retire” him (which remains a chilling euphemism) is terrific, as are many that follow as K tries to uncover the nature of the mystery he’s stumbled on to. It’s only towards the end of the film, about the time that Harrison Ford’s Deckard finally makes his appearance, that things really begin to fall apart and you realize the movie was full of good ideas it didn’t know what to do with (as well as many half-baked ideas that should have been shelved). It doesn’t help that virtually every female character in the film is either defined by her relationship to men, a sexist stereotype, or both. There were parts of Blade Runner 2049 that I really liked, but in the end I couldn’t love it.

15. Alien: Covenant by Ridley Scott

More than anything else on this list I think switching the places of Blade Runner 2049 and Alien: Covenant will be a controversial choice. The funny thing though is that they share a lot in common for both good and bad, which may not be entirely coincidental considering they’re both follow-ups to Ridley Scott’s most widely praised films (even though Scott declined to direct Blade Runner 2049 in favor of Covenant). And like many I was pretty disappointed by Covenant when it finally debuted, though perhaps for different reasons than many (I’m very much on record as having been a big fan of Prometheus).

But despite Covenant’s confused narrative—which clearly wanted to be a sequel to Prometheus but got sidelined into being a more direct Alien prequel instead—I have to say that it stuck with me more. After I walked away from Blade Runner 2049 I rarely gave it another thought, at least after working out my disappointment. But Covenant is full of interesting ideas it actually commits to: the interplay of creation and destruction, the wrath of the created against the creator, and the nature of what it means to love. And if nothing else, Michael Fassbender provided was immensely enjoyable both as the Oedipal David and the gentler, kinder Walter.

14. Logan by James Mangold

Rounding out the three Michael Green scripts of 2017 (the guy certainly got around last year) is Logan, which is an interesting case in how far you can stretch the conventional boundaries of the superhero genre. It’s often been said that superhero films aren’t really a genre, with Marvel’s own Kevin Feige arguing that Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man actually represent different kinds of movies and whether or not you buy that argument it’s hard to argue that Logan isn’t a very different style of film than not only the aforementioned three but also Wolverine’s two previous solo outings. It has been described as a Western (though that itself is a very broad genre) and even noir but a typical superhero film it clearly is not.

I really liked Logan quite a lot when I saw it and had relatively few qualms with it other than some minor complaints about the ending. Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Dafne Keen all give phenomenal performances and James Mangold was quite effective at weaving a story about aging, depression, and regaining hope. It didn’t really stick with me though and that’s one reason it doesn’t rate higher. Once I’d seen Logan I didn’t much think of it. Which is too bad because it’s very experimental style is something I’d like to see a lot more of in superhero films (more on that later).

13. Dunkirk by Christopher Nolan

There was a time when I was as big of a fan of Christopher Nolan as anyone. I was immensely impressed by Batman Begins when I saw it abroad in Britain back in 2005 and The Dark Knight only confirmed my intense affection for the way he reinvented Batman. It’s easy to forget now, given how slavishly DC and Warner Bros. have been (poorly) aping his style for over a decade now but Nolan’s take on the caped crusader was genuinely fresh when audiences first experienced it, wiping away not only the painful memories of Joel Schumacher’s take but also the still campy but more fun style of Tim Burton’s. And since then I’ve enjoyed pretty much every film Nolan has directed though with some reservations in a few cases.

I’m happy to say that Dunkirk is no exception: it’s a very solid piece of work that manages to be a war film where the war is actually horrifying and not simply a stage for rousing heroics. It’s fairly notable for not featuring any German characters at all: the enemy is entirely unseen which, although unconventional, is probably a far more accurate rendition of war than is usually portrayed in Hollywood films. The film does, however, fall victim to some of Christopher Nolan’s weaknesses as a director, lacking in compelling human characters to ground the action (though Cillian Murphy’s shell-shocked soldier, who goes unnamed, is a possible exception). Nonetheless, it’s worth seeing if you’re a fan of either Nolan or his frequent collaborator Hans Zimmer, who makes an already tense film even more riveting.

12. War for the Planet of the Apes by Matt Reeves

It’s often forgotten but the original Planet of the Apes film was not thought of as a particularly cheesy or silly film at the time. Released the same year as 2001: A Space Odyssey, the 1968 picture was considered thought-provoking and though the makeup has aged somewhat (the characters look more like humans than actual chimpanzees or orangutans) it remains pretty visually striking. So the fact that the new Planet of the Apes series (which is ambiguously framed as either prequels or a reboot) has garnered critical acclaim is less a course change than a course correction, getting back to the core of the first film and the novel it was based on before the more campy sequels came along.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes were startlingly good. Both dealt with the concept of consciousness, bioethics, the politics of revolution, and non-human animal rights with a deftness that one would rarely expect from a major studio blockbuster. War of the Planet of the Apes, unfortunately, is a bit more of what one might expect. It’s still good, but compared with the pitch perfect execution of Rise and Dawn, it falters slightly. The villain is a little too simplistic, the arc of Caesar a little too predictable, and the plot basically just moves in a circle so that it’s not really clear if anything was learned or gained from the experience. It’s still worth seeing to finish out the new trilogy, but I’ll admit I was disappointed.

11. Spider-Man: Homecoming by Jon Watts

Given his recent faltering (as much a consequence of Sony Pictures’ financial troubles as anything else), one might be forgiven for thinking Peter Parker was a spent force in the superhero business. If you’re not familiar with comics or the merchandising that drives the genre, it’d be easy to assume the web crawling had long since been eclipsed by Iron Man or Captain America. And indeed, there’s hints of that in Homecoming, which features some heavy guest starring by Tony Stark and lots of references to the other Avengers. But Homecoming also proves that in the right hands, Peter’s still got a lot of storytelling potential.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is relatively unambitious by Spider-Man movie standards but where it aims it mostly hits on target. Compared with the cheeky melodrama of the Sam Raimi / Tobey Maguire films or the Batman Begins-style reboot of the Marc Webb / Andrew Garfield films director Jon Watts aims for a fairly simple coming-of-age story with actor Tom Holland at its center. And he more or less nails that. Holland’s Peter is a little self-centered, but in that very typically adolescent way we all are at a certain age and you can tell he means well. It helps that Homecoming grounds its whimsy with Michael Keaton’s take on the Vulture, which although hardly accurate to the comics makes for one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s better villains.

10. Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2 by James Gunn

When Guardians of the Galaxy originally debuted in 2014, no one would have guessed it would quickly become one of Marvel’s most celebrated films. Indeed, many industry analysts wondered what the hell Marvel was thinking, making a colorful space adventure powered by 1970s one-hit wonders and starring a talking tree and raccoon. But the skeptics were proved wrong and it’s probably no exaggeration to say that the Guardians now stand second only to Captain America and Iron Man in their impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And so when a sequel was inevitably announced everyone got excited.

Perhaps it should prove no surprise than that Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2 is perhaps the most hotly contested Marvel film since Avengers: Age of Ultron. I’ve seen people who’ve been moved to tears by it while I’ve also seen people who loved the first film bored and disappointed by it. It is probably no coincidence that Guardians also centers itself much more tightly on the first film’s nominal lead, Peter Quinn, and the mystery of his parentage. For many this resulted in a male-focused film that lost some of the diverse charm of the original. But others (most compellingly Charlie Jane Anders) argued it allowed the film to tell a compelling story about the dangers of toxic masculinity and patriarchal mythmaking. Personally, I fall somewhere in-between. I saw and appreciated what Volume 2 was doing but I can also acknowledge why some people felt it fell flat.

9. Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi by Rian Johnson

Is there any bigger franchise in the world than Star Wars? Marvel, also owned by Disney, is certainly gunning for the title but the cultural impact of Star Wars, I would argue, goes far beyond what Marvel has achieved (so far). Indeed, Star Wars is so big and so popular that it’s really hard to remember just how weird the first movie was. But it’s worth going back through old interviews with the cast and crew and noting how no one (with the possible exception of Steven Spielberg) thought the movie would be a success, let alone a runaway hit that would spawn a massive media empire.

I’m noted among my friends and followers as being something of a grumpkin when it comes to Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Part of that is just how safe J.J. Abrams played it, opting for a story that more or less replicated the beats of Episode IV: A New Hope and a setting that saw a scrappy rebellion once more engaged against a massive authoritarian empire (at the cost of essentially making the original films seem pointless). Perhaps because of that, Episode VIII was a breath of fresh air. After the fun but largely empty adventure of The Force Awakens, Rian Johnson throws us into a more complicated and at times admittedly dorky version of Star Wars… which is really what the franchise has always been at its best. Obnoxiously cute porgs, goofy humor, and odd pacing, I’ll take them all in a heartbeat when coupled with a story that actually has something to say about the Force and which takes its characters seriously enough to show them fail.

9. Okja by Bong Joon-hoo

Netflix has has a bad run in recent months, with a number of high-profile releases that were widely ridiculed or outright slammed by audiences and critics alike. But not all of Netflix’s “original” pictures (actually usually produced by outside parties and then distributed by Netflix) have gone over poorly and last year one picture in particular garnered critical acclaim: Okja, South Korean director Bong Joon-hoo’s newest feature. And it is certainly worth a watch.

Okja is, at its core, about a young girl and her friendship with a strange, fantastical beast dubbed a “super pig,” and raised as part of a massive corporate publicity stunt to raise support for their genetically engineered food. Of course, that’s simplifying quite a bit. In truth, Okja is an incredibly complicated film, one that can simultaneously criticize the packaged meat industry and animal rights activists, which can make you bond with the suffering of a digitally generated meat animal while also not feeling immediately grossed out when her friends and family sit down minutes later to eat some chicken stew. It’s crazy, it’s twisted, it’s unnerving, and it’s very, very good.

7. Coco by Lee Unkrich

Pixar is one of those studios that I always feel a little bit ambivalent about. They’re indisputably full of great talent and they’ve made some great classics, but often when a new film of theirs is released I’ll confess to usually feeling no great urge to see it. I think part of it is that they’ve been so successful that they crowd out most other animation studios and styles, to the point that even non-Pixar films often imitate their look and style. As a fan of traditional animation as well as animated films that aim at a more adult crowd, I’ll admit that bothers me a little. But every time I actually go and watch a Pixar film I’m almost always pleasantly surprised.

Coco is a really great example. I wasn’t exactly sure whether or not I’d enjoy Pixar’s take on Mexican spirituality, though I did make note of the fact that the studio made a special effort to do its research and hire Latin American performers. When I actually saw it though I was won over completely. Coco is an incredibly beautiful film, with rich music and a genuinely moving story about family, loss, and creativity. It is very easily the best Pixar movie I’ve seen in many years and quite competitive against the likes of Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles. So much for my biases.

6. It (Chapter One) by Andy Muschietti

I wasn’t always a horror fan. For a long time I actively avoided horror and was easily spooked by even the most timid forays into the genre. I’d convinced myself that as a person who was naturally anxious, who avoided the appearance of danger reflexively, horror films would ruin me. I eventually learned, however, that the opposite was true. Given the opportunity to experience fear within a confined, prepared context, I actually found I felt liberated. And I also gradually realized, looking back on my childhood, I’d actually always enjoyed getting a little bit scared from time to time.

It, based on one of horror giant Stephen King’s most famous novels, touches on some of that experience. It positions a group of children as the main characters, unusually for a horror film aimed at adults (as opposed to a children’s fantasy film with horror elements) but it largely works, in part because it reminds us how easy it is to feel as children that something lurks in the shadows that adults won’t tell us about. The film is not perfect—it telegraphs some of its scares too early and is uncomfortably comfortable with sexualizing its female lead, Beverly Marsh—but it is a very good example of a horror film that touches on the psychology of fear and the importance of confronting that which frightens us. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how the second part turns out.

5. The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro

Technically, I didn’t see The Shape of Water until this year. But since it came out in 2017 and everyone’s going to be talking about it over the next few days I felt it was important to include. I often feel Guillermo del Toro is one of those directors who simultaneously gets too much and too little credit. He’s by far one of his generation’s best visual storytellers, with an expert eye for set design and special effects that is scarcely rivaled. He also sometimes tends to write simplistic stories with very easy to follow themes and easily identifiable heroes and villains. So I wasn’t sure what I’d think of The Shape of Water. The answer is that it may be del Toro’s most complex film yet.

That’s a heavy claim of course, given how excellent Pan’s Labyrinth is. But del Toro something does here he never does in any of his previous films (to my recollection) which is write actually complex, nuanced characters. The Asset, del Toro’s male romantic lead, is beautiful in that strangely monstrous way del Toro loves and full of love—but he’s also not above eating domestic animals, which reminds us he’s not human and a little dangerous. Colonel Strickland is a horrible human being in the same mold as Captain Vidal from Pan’s Labyrinth—but he’s also not completely dehumanized here and we get a sense of the pain and desperation that drives him as well. Of course, the real star is Elisa Esposito, the film’s mute heroine who nonetheless never feels voiceless and whose earnest desire to be accepted and loved is moving and universally relatable.

4. Get Out by Jordan Peele

Was it a good a year for horror or what? Not every film was a hit but there were certainly a lot of really high profile releases explicitly labeled as horror in 2017 as well as a number that arguably touch on the genre’s edges (such as Dunkirk, Blade Runner 2049, Okja, and The Shape of Water). And the year’s horror extravaganzas arguably started with Get Out, one of the most talked about movies of the year and the long-form directorial debut of renowned actor and comedian Jordan Peele.

What is there to say about Get Out without entirely spoiling its premise or the major surprises? That it’s a horror film viewed through the lens of a black man’s experience in a white-dominated culture? That’s true but seems reductive. That it manages to be both deeply disturbing and laugh-out-loud funny, sometimes within the span of a single scene? Also true. That it will probably make your skin crawl and cause you to question some of your very basic assumptions about the black experience if you’re not black? Definitely. Altogether, Get Out deeply deserves every accolade its earned and makes a very compelling claim for required viewing in the horror genre as well as the examination of race in American cinema.

3. Wonder Woman by Patty Jenkins

If there’s one movie that’s felt neglected at this year’s Academy Awards after generating a huge amount of conversation it is without a doubt Wonder Woman. After debuting to nearly universal praise and an immense box office return (making it the highest grossing DC Comics movie ever without Batman as the lead character) it has been curiously overshadowed in this year’s accolades, especially considering the arguably favorable timing in the age of Trump and #metoo. Perhaps it’s because there are so many other good films to choose from. But for my money Wonder Woman beats many of them.

Wonder Woman is not a perfect film but is definitely excellent. Featuring a compelling and passionate lead in Gal Gadot and built around a story about war, fear, and why helping people matters even if they’re flawed, Wonder Woman impressed and thrilled me… and I’m not even a fan of the character (nothing against her, I just haven’t read the source material). I also have to give the film a big thumb’s up for telling possibly the best love story in a superhero film since Captain America: The First Avenger and for doing so in a way that centered the female gaze. Also, as someone who’s been continually frustrated with how small Marvel’s gods seem, it was gratifying to see some truly mythic mythology in Wonder Woman.

2. Thor: Ragnarok by Taika Waititi

Of course, Marvel had to come along the same year and prove that they can do gods right. I’ve never been as much of a critic of the Thor films as many others have—I thought the first Thor, while silly also had a great message and genuinely great chemistry between its too leads (I for one will miss Natalie Portman, who’s sorely underrated). But there’s no denying they’ve often felt trapped between embracing the melodramatic and mythopoeic origins and staying true to the style and trappings of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But finally, with New Zealand’s talented son Taika Waititi, someone got it just right.

My greatest fear, going into Thor: Ragnarok was that, like previous Thor films it would be silly but forgettable. That the trailers seemed to be aping the style of the the Guardians of the Galaxy films did not do much to alleviate this feeling. But that was very much not the case. Far from being just a silly romp (which some critics still described it as), Ragnarok is actually a great story that examines the core of who Thor is, both as a Marvel superhero and as an actual, literal god. It also happens to be very funny. But ultimately it’s not the laughs that won me over. It’s Odin’s speech to his son about what it means to be a god, the responsibility that entails, and why it’s the ideas that matter, not the things or places we associate with them.

1. Atomic Blonde by David Leitch

As aforementioned it was a great year for horror. It was also very clearly a pretty good year for superheroes, with both Marvel and DC breaking out of their usual patterns. My number one favorite film was not, however, a superhero or horror film. It was a spy film, a genre for which I have great affection but which has become neglected in recent years. I am, of course, talking about Atomic Blonde.

I’ve never seen the John Wick films—a personal failing many of my friends are happy to remind me of—but if they’re anything like Atomic Blonde, directed by one of the men behind the camera of those films, I understand the love. Atomic Blonde is a pitch perfect spy film, combining intrigue, frenetic action, and the sexy thrills we’ve come to expect from the genre in a seamless fashion. It also happens to have come out right at the peak of 80s nostalgia but while the film makes extensive use of an 80s soundtrack for excellent effect, it doesn’t feel trapped by that style the way many other projects do. Atomic Blonde is without a doubt a modern film, doing things with cinematography and choreography I didn’t even know were possible. I can’t recommend it enough.
