I've posted this piece before, but there were some parts I really wanted to edit slightly so! Tweaked this piece and here's another post of it. Three cheers to the best dressed couple in Baldur's Gate, and to Majexatli's native swag.

I need people to mind their language around using and describing mods for Wyll and Karlach. Give Wyll a different hairstyle or Karlach her EA face all you want, but no, Wyll's flat twists are not "boring" or "less elegant" and Karlach's Southeast/East Asian facial features are not "not cool", "too soft" or "not fit for a warrior".

Also, please use "locs" instead of "dreads" or "dreadlocks".

Allow me to complain about Wyll's hair

This is my most popular post, but I'm not Black, so please go read a Black person's post on the subject matter before you read this: creatingblackcharacters/750662964707803136 I wasn't aware of their post before I made mine. Sorry to the Black community for that, and if anyone would like me to take this post down, I am happy to do so. Onto my original post, with edits after corrections from lesbianwyllravengard 🙏

I think they did a bad job on Wyll's hair texture, and they had Theo Solomon (imdb), the Black voice actor that played Wyll, at their fingertips the whole time. They could have just taken a photo of his hair, or looked at his headshots, or even just googled Black hair styles. I just want to get this off my chest, because it's been eating at me for like a month, and I just saw a white artist do fan art where they gave Wyll the same hair he has in the game, but it's not right.

Like, I know most of the artists for this game were white people, and then they outsourced some of them from Vietnam, but like... they could have googled what Black hair looks like. They spent like a decade making this game. They have no excuse not to have gotten this right. They released patch after patch too, (the most recent one included an entirely NEW ENDING and it came out a few weeks ago!) and they still didn't fix his hair. They gave Astarion a whole new outfit. They changed his teeth. They should hire Black artists to work on Black characters. The artist that worked on Wyll Ravenguard was Stephanie Chafe, who worked as a Senior Character Artist for Larian Studios. And yeah, she's white.

@lesbianwyllravengard pointed out that Wyll's hair style was intended to be twists and not braids or locs, but that braids would have made more sense given the convenience since he'd be on the go all the time. They were also right to point that Wyll should have been give a special custom hair style, and not one readily used on other NPCs. Also, look at how it is tied at the end on this photo of Black person's hair compared to what they gave Wyll in the photo 4th photo of this post:

There's entire blogs (and books!) dedicated to the subject matter of drawing Black characters. I seek them out and I just draw for fun. If you're a professional artist, you have no excuse not to do some basic research. Good starting point would be this post. btw, I'm not Black, but if there are any Black artists or fans that have done posts similar to this, I'm happy to reblog them <3 Also, if you're Black, happy to accept any feedback (in any way you want to give it).

Consider: Probably around Act 2 when their relationship is more official, Astarion takes the time each night at camp to learn every part of Wyll's hair care routine to help him tend to his locs —long haired Wyll is canon in my heart, okay— especially now that Wyll has a set of horns constantly getting in the way. Astarion learns so much by the time they reach Baldur's Gate, so he intends to truly pamper Wyll once they have access to all of the luxuries that the city has to offer. They get to finally take a proper bath together in Elfsong Tavern, and Astarion spends so much time simply spoiling him. Washing his hair. Massaging his scalp until he melts like putty in his hands. Astarion refuses to settle for anything less than the finest conditioners and oils that money can buy. That way, he can help Wyll moisturize and hydrate his locs to the best of his ability. Then, after they're done, he helps him wrap his hair in a satin scarf. Of course, both of them wear bonnets and eye masks to bed once it's time to finally settle in for the night. That's to be expected.

The Pearl of the Gate

Francesca Ravengard, I adore you.

Y'all helped vote on her hair (the kinda updo with butterfly locs) which helped me figure out how to finish this up.

@rowan-of-waterdeep has this thing in their Wyll's Gate fic where Wyll is named after Wyllyck Caldwell, who is highly important and influential but kind patiar. He's well know for giving to charities and being an alchemist (his wife runs the business). I thought it'd be cool if Francesca was Ulder's and Wyll's non political link to the Patiar. So in my version, she's a famous alchemist who was sponsored by Caldwell initially.

Multiple people in a server I'm in have commented something along the lines of "can Ulder fight" when I posted it in there which is hilarious to me. So I'm incorporating that in. Francesca was courted by multiple people before a noble member of the flaming fist caught her eye. Someone definitely dueled Ulder for her hand.

She has the acorn on her necklace because I think she was the one to propose since she's the one who allegedly told wyll about the wilden oak (which is a conflict with her being dead but bg3 mistake is my gain, you'll see why). Ulder made it into a necklace but when she passed, he buried her with it. He has a habit of doing that with loosing people he loves (the journal he hid away).

I also wanted to match Wyll's pride of the gate line with her being the pearl of the gate.

it's interesting to me how so many people tend to be drawn toward pieces with more smooth rendering over those with a lot of line energy or shapes. even when the rendering isn't like. particularly good, they're the pieces of mine that get the most online attention over ones that I personally love that are i guess subtler and simpler in the things i enjoy about it. Like these ?

The left: I hate it. I don't like looking at it. I overworked it and it feels kind of muddy to me and lacking a real clear focal point or visual contrast. It's very monochrome but the purple and yellow pulls that out a bit for me. The horns get lost with the lines of the background. But it's my solo wyll piece with the most notes, 723.

The right: I don't like how it turned out. Lighting is all over the place. Colors all over the place. They all Almost work together but just not quite. A little too far apart to be monochrome but not far apart enough to feel it's meant to look like that intentionally (bc it was meant to be monochrome lmao). Rendering style all over the place. I did Not draw his hair with a reference for locs and you can tell. As a whole it lacks depth in the shading. It has 704 notes.

My two personal favorites??? Are these two. The ones that have about 100 notes each. I'm using Wyll specific comparisons bc they have the same baseline of being in a widely watched tag

The left is fun and silly bc I wanted to call back to a style I tried to force when I was like 13 and it's got good solid shapes and a pretty solid silhouette. The limited colors work together really well and gives it a very graphic feeling. The right is like. muah. wonderful composition. All lines pointing toward the eye, the brighter lines in particular radiating toward it, the contrast of the brightness and saturation in the eye drawing you toward it. The messy sketchiness doing similar work as gently blurring whatever isn't in focus and giving it a frantic feeling ! I'm really proud of it

I don't have a point! I just think it's interesting what things the majority ends up liking vs what I think are just way better overall and also I enjoy critiquing art and seeing the things that can get better alongside what did well
