something like love
part - 6
pairing - paige bueckers x azzi fudd
word count - 4.7k
c/w - language, tiny bit of angst (this is only the beginning i fear.)
a/n - is it cringe of me to ask for live reactions? bc i want live reactions sb. anyway, sorry ik i said this chap would be long and juicy but i decided to hold off on the juicy part, i needed a lil more plot development! also ty to everyone who sends me asks, even if itâs just things like âwhenâs the next partđŤâ i love it sm lol. hope yall like this one!!
The next two days areâat least compared to the first twoâalmost peaceful. The weather is nice, just warm enough and not too humid, which Azziâs hair appreciates. She got goddess braids done just before the trip and even in protective styles, her hair gets frizzy at the very notion of moisture.
The peacefulness largely comes from the fact that Paige is avoiding her parents like the plague, instead spending all her time with Azzi and her siblings. The third day they spend almost entirely at the local park, shooting around at the court there under the hot sun. Lauren even reluctantly joins for a few games, and she may be adamant about not wanting to play basketball but the talent for it must be genetic because sheâs a natural. And if Paige and Azzi spend the whole âcompetitionâ brushing hands and flirting, nobody says anything. (Though Ryan does wrinkle his nose at them a few times.)
The fourth day starts out warm, and so Paige and Azzi sneak the kids out bright and early (Azzi, of course, ends up with the job of waking all three siblings upânot one of them is a morning person whatsoever) and go to an ice cream shop, where they eat their cold, sweet breakfasts on the curb while they chat. Both Ryan and Lauren may have argued that they were too old to be excited about ice cream for breakfast anymore, but they both end up with matching, chocolate-covered grins when theyâre done.
The weather turns for the worst before noon, though, and the kids want to go home but Paige insists they go to the arcade instead. When she says sheâll pay for as many games as they want, theyâre easily swayed. Of course, Paige and Azzi make a competition out of the day, deciding to keep a tally of all their points so that whoever has the most wins by the end has to buy the whole group prizes.
Azzi gives it a fighting go but Paige plays way more video games than she does so she very nearly beats herâbut then, when theyâre almost out of game tickets, Azzi pouts at her about the whole situation, and suspiciously, she ends up making an incredible recovery, easily beating Paige at almost every game after that.
Lauren picks a koala plushie, Ryan picks some new shoes, and Azzi gets this shiny plastic tiara.
âYou didnât have to get the cheapest prize,â Paige says as Azzi adjusts the tiara on her head. âI got money.â
âI know,â Azzi replies, smiling at her reflection in the mirror. âBut I had to. As the princess.â
Paige gives her that stupid fucking look againâthe one Azzi still canât figure out even though she knows Paige like the back of her hand, which is just driving her crazyâand that look shows up so often Azzi should really just start referring to it as The Look at this point.
But then Paige smiles, previous odd expression gone, and the way she does that,âslips out of it like she doesnât even realize it was there in the first placeâdrives Azzi even more crazy than The Look itself.
Now, it is the fifth day. And Azzi reminisces on these past two blissful days to try and distract herself from the fact that Paige and her parents are having a heated argument right in front of her and her scrambled eggs.
âNo, Paige,â Amy is saying. âAbsolutely not.â
âYou canât do that!â Paige replies, throwing her hands into the air. âIâm an adult, I make my own money, I can doââ
âItâs stupid.â
âItâll be fun!â
âIt wonât, because itâs not happening.â Amy is unpacking a load of groceries, and Dean is lingering in the corner of the kitchen being absolutely useless. That seems to be his brand.
âYes it will, Mom,â Paige replies, voice lower now but still obviously frustrated. âI wasnât asking for your permission. I was just seeing if you wanted to come with us. I was tryna be nice!â
âWell it wonât be nice when you crash and we all drown, Paige.â
âJesus, Mom! I ainât gonna go around crashing!â
Azzi feels very uncomfortable, wishing she were literally anywhere else, but at the same time this is sort of amusing and she has to hide a smile in a bite of eggs.
This argument is, out of all things, about a boat. Paige wants to rent one and have a lake day, and though she didnât want to, Azzi convinced her to invite her parentsâshe figured theyâd decline but that theyâd be offended if they werenât at least invited.
She wasnât really expecting a lecture to come out of it, though. But by the tired look on Paigeâs face, she knew exactly what was coming their way.
âYou donât even have a boating license,â Amy continues, placing a new jug of milk and some apples in the fridge. âThis is illegal. If you wonât listen to your mother, at least listen to the law.â
That very nearly gets a giggle out of Azzi. She chokes it down.
âThis is a private lake, Iâon need my license.â
âWell that doesnât sound shady at all.â
âItâs not, itâs super legit!â Paige makes for her phone in her back pocket. âIt has its own website and everything, I looked way into it.â
Amy stares her daughter down for a few seconds, hands on her hips, before she lets out a resigned sigh. âLike you said, Paige, I canât tell you what to do. Youâre an adult, do what you want. But you will not be taking your siblings on that death trap.â
âWhaâŚâ Paige flounders, eyebrows furrowed, and her voice raises again, âthat was the whole point of this entire thing!â
âWell, thatâs too bad. Itâs dangerous.â
âIâll make them wear life jackets!â
âTheyâre teenagers,â Dean points out rather unhelpfully, and itâs the first time heâs spoken around her in days but Azzi is already sick of him again. âNeither of them are gonna wear life jackets.â
âIâll force them, I swear.â
âPaige Madison,â Amy snaps, and Paige may be an independent adult now but she still straightens her back subconsciously at her motherâs warning tone, âno means no. They are my kids.â
âTheyâre my siblings!â Paige repliesârather boldly, Azzi thinks, because if Azzi were in her place she wouldâve given up by now.
But Paige, as most daughters do, knows exactly how far to push her mother to get what she wantsâapparent in the way Amy massages her temples with her fingers before saying, âYou know what, Paige? Fine.â
Dean is jumping in immediately. âWhat? No, she canât take my kids out on a boat.â
âSheâs right, Dean,â Amy says, though she looks a little pained to be siding with her daughter for once. âTheyâre her siblings. She wants to do something fun for them.â
âItâs dangerous!â Dean motions sporadically at where Paige and Azzi are sitting at the island. Azziâs eggs are gone now and so she has nothing to put her awkward energy into. âNeither of them owns a boat, and they are practically strangersââ
âShe is my daughter,â Amy says, and itâs so quiet Azzi almost doesnât hear it, but she does, and it sends shivers through her. Because thereâs something dangerous, something protective in her tone, something only a mother who loves their child could convey. And it sends a flicker of hope through her. âShe is my daughter and I trust her with her siblings.â
Dean flounders for something but comes up empty, instead storming off all red-faced like a child. Amy doesnât look either of them in the eye when she says, âLet me know if you kids need anything today,â before leaving the two best friends alone in the kitchen.
Slowly, Paige turns to look at Azzi, something like disbelief in her expression. âDid thatâactually go well?â
âYeah,â Azzi responds. âI think it did.â
Things may just be looking up.
âââââââââââââââ
Dean may be an asshole, but it turns out he was right about one thing: Ryan and Lauren will not wear life jackets.
âCâmon, guys, itâs the law,â Paige insists, thrusting a pink life jacket at her sister, who scrunches her nose in disgust.
âNo way! Thatâs so ugly, Paige.â
âThe color wont matter when youâre drowning.â
âYou sound just like Mom!â Lauren sighs, and Paigeâs mouth falls open.
âYou did not just say that.â
Lauren gives Paige a smug smile, which amuses Azzi because itâs the same smile Paige gives her whenever she wins an argument. âAnd I meant it too.â
If Lauren were not much smaller than Paige, she would be tackling her right now, based off the look on her face. But instead she composes herself and turns to Ryan, who is sitting at the front of the speedboat on his phone. He feels his older sisterâs gaze and looks up at her, then at the life jacket in her hands. âYouâre funny.â
âIâm being so for real.â
âThereâs gonna be hot girls in bikinis on the lake,â Ryan replies, as if this is the most obvious thing ever. âNo way Iâm wearing a life jacket.â
Paige sighs and rubs her temple with her fingers, and Azzi would never say it out loud (for fear of being pushed into the lake) but she does kind of look like her mom in this moment.
When Paige turns on her with a warning look, Azzi startles, wondering if sheâs somehow read her mind. But instead, Paige picks up another life jacket and says, âWill you at least wear one?â
Azzi smiles, a little puzzled. âPaige, I donât need a life jacket. I can swim.â Which is obvious considering she and Paige have spent various lake days at her familyâs cabin.
âYeah, but for my peace of mind, though!â Paige shakes the life jacket in Azziâs direction.
The truth is, Azzi wouldnât mind wearing the life jacket. But ever since she put on this bikiniâpastel purple in colorâPaige has been swallowing thickly and averting her eyes constantly. So Azzi thinks she has other reasons for wanting her to cover up.
And Azzi canât let her get away with that, can she?
âI donât need it.â Azzi steps forward and takes the life jacket out of Paigeâs grasp, tossing it aside before reaching to trail her hand down Paigeâs bicep, squeezing the hard muscle a little bit. âAnd besides, wonât you save me if Iâm drowning?â she asks, smiling coyly.
Paigeâs throat bobs, eyes landing respectfully on a spot past Azziâs shoulder. âWell, thatâs not really how that works.â
Azzi blinks, and she knows just how big and brown her eyes are when she looks up at Paige through her lashes. âNo? Thought youâve been in the gym?â
âI have,â Paige says defensively.
âHm.â Azzi lets her hand trail off Paigeâs arm, resting it on Paigeâs side before dancing her fingers dangerously over Paigeâs exposed abs. âYou wanna prove that to me, baby?â
Paigeâs eyes widen, and Azzi loves the way she can not only see but feel her stomach tense under her fingers. But the moment is broken by a gagging sound nearby.
Laurenâwho has sat beside her brother and pulled out her own phoneâis now looking at them with disgust. âYou guys are so gross.â
âYou shouldnât be making sexual innuendos in front of Lauren,â Ryan adds on, though his eyes donât leave his screen.
âYeah!â Lauren agrees, then furrows her eyebrows and starts tapping at her phone. Azzi guesses sheâs probably searching what sexual innuendo means.
âHey, yo, donât blame me,â Paige says, putting her hands up and taking two big steps away from Azzi. âShe started it.â
âAzziâs a freak,â Ryan says.
âWhoa, chill!â
âHey, thatâs actually offensive,â Lauren says. She has picked up a habit of defending Azzi with her life these last few days theyâve spent together, and Azzi has decided she would do the same. âThatâs like calling her a monster or something.â
Ryan smirks, finally looking up at them. âI didnât mean that kinda freak.â
âOkayyy!â Paige jumps in before Lauren can do any more Googling. âLetâs get this show on the road. Imma go untie us real quick, then weâll head out.â
For the first time, nerves bubble in Azziâs tummy. âPaige, you sure youâll be able to drive this thing?â
Paige looks almost offended at the question. âYeah, duh.â
âItâs just, youâve never driven a speed boat beforeâŚâ
âTrust me, mama,â Paige says, nodding cockily to herself. âI got driving skills like youâve never seen.â
Fifteen minutes later, Azzi realizes Paige was telling the truth. She has certainly never seen these driving skills before.
Paige is anâerratic driver, to put it mildly. This lake is private, huge, and though there are plenty of other boaters out Paige drives as if theyâre the only ones on the water. At one point, she gets to such a high speed that even Ryan grasps onto Azzi a little bit.
When Paige very nearly runs into a cruising party boat, Azzi finally gets up from her place between the kids and marches over to Paige, who glances up at her with a sheepish smile. âWhoops.â
âLemme drive,â Azzi demands, beckoning for Paige to get up.
âNo!â Paige says stubbornly. âIâm doinâ good!â
âI thought I was going to die!â Lauren pipes up angrily.
Azzi motions to her. âSee? Youâre scaring your brother and sister.â
âWhoa, who said I was scared?â Ryan says.
Azzi decides against bringing up the fact that he kept clinging to her arm. âThis is scary, I wanna drive.â
âBut babeee,â Paige groans, bringing the boat to a stop so she can properly argue, âyou drive like a grandma.â
âI drive like a sane person, is what I think you mean to say.â
âItâll be boring.â
âPaige.â
Paige stares her down for a moment before sighing like a stubborn little kid. âFine. You can drive.â
Azzi nods, pleased, and shoves at Paigeâs shoulder when she doesnât move. âGet up.â
A slow smile creeps over Paigeâs face and Azzi doesnât like the look of that at all. âI gotta show you the ropes.â
âI donât need you to teach me how to drive this thing,â Azzi says as if itâs obvious, because really, it is. The thought of Paige trying to teach anyone herâŚunique ways is downright scary. âI got it.â
âNah, I think youâll need some help.â
âP, for real, stop being difficult and move.â
âIâm not about toââ
âCan we go?â Lauren says loudly, getting both girlsâ attention.
âYeah, Iâm getting hot as hell just sitting here,â Ryan agrees.
âI wanna get to that diving cliff Paige was talking about!â
Before Azzi can turn back to Paige to continue arguing with her, Paige has her hands on her hips and is pulling her firmly into her lap. Azzi squeaks, grabbing onto the wheel for leverage.
âPaige!â she exclaims, turning to glare at the smug-looking girl underneath her.
âYou heard them,â Paige says simply, shrugging her shoulders as if her hands are tied. âLetâs go.â
âI donâtââ Azzi starts to argue once again, but then Lauren is sighing dramatically in that teenage-girl way of herâs and saying, âSeriously, come on!â
So, almost in a daze, Azzi turns back to the front and moves her hand to the shift, getting the boat moving slowly again. She tries desperately to ignore it when Paige leans up close to her ear and murmurs, âAtta girl,â but she canât help the goosebumps that erupt over her neck and Paige must spot them because she chuckles lightly before leaning back, letting Azzi do her thing.
Trying to shake off the feeling of Paigeâs hot breath fanning over her skin, Azzi amps up the speed a little bit, determined to show Paige that she can be fun and safe, as promised.
After a few minutes of skimming over the water, Azzi calls over the wind, âThought you were gonna âshow me the ropesâ?â
âLooks like you got it,â Paige says, sitting straight so sheâs pressed up against Azziâs back again, and her hands find their place on Azziâs waist.
âWhyâd you make me sit on your lap, then, P?â Azzi asks, and her tone lilts teasingly but she is sort of freaking out on the inside because moments like theseâmoments where Azzi hardly bothers to hide her feelings for Paige and Paige, instead of shying away, respondsâare becoming a little too common for comfort.
Paige rests her chin on Azziâs shoulder, lips brushing her cheek when she says, âThink you know why, hm?â
Yeah. Definitely far too common for comfort.
Ramping up the speedboat a little bitâenough that Ryan whoops and Lauren leans over the side to touch the waterâAzzi shifts her hips. She moves out of discomfort, almost subconsciously trying to get away from this buzzing energy between her and her best friend, but Paige lets out a huff of air at the motion and, curious, Azzi does it again.
A full-on gasp this time.
A flush creeps up over Azziâs cheeks all the way down her chest, and sheâs not sure if itâs from pleasure or shyness, though likely itâs both. But she canât let Paige have the upper hand, because Azzi canât even imagine how quickly sheâd fold if that happened. So instead, she turns her head to the side and says, âAll good, Paige?â
The problem with this is Paigeâs face is still turned toward her when she says it. And when Azzi moves to reciprocate the angle, their lips are so close that they brush on the last word. On the utterance of Paigeâs name.
Azzi jerks back as soon as it happens, putting a couple inches of distance between their faces, and sheâs sure the flush is noticeable by now. She tries for a lighthearted laugh, âOh, sorry, didnât realize you were so closeââ
She doesnât see it coming when Paige kisses her.
It pulls a gasp out of her, lips now pressed against Paige parting slightly in surprise, and her eyes donât even close until she feels Paigeâs tongue dip inside her mouth.
Itâs a quick swipe, her tongue against the space between Azziâs teeth and upper lip before sheâs pulling awayâonly enough to make the kiss much more chaste.
Her hands slide from Azziâs waist to her stomach, and Azzi grips onto the steering wheel for dear life when Paige moans ever so quietly into her mouth, the sound barely heard over the wind whipping around them. And then the wind is whipping Paigeâs hair into their faces, a few strands getting in Azziâs mouth, which she takes as her opportunity to pull away. Paige stares at herâThe Look againâfor only a split second this time (Azzi much prefers that over the lingering one) before her face is breaking into a smile, not cocky or smug or teasing but just bright, and Azzi canât help but laugh with her as they pull Paigeâs hair out of her mouth.
âKeep your eyes on the lake!â Lauren yells at them, and when they look at her sheâs got her nose wrinkled. âWhat is it with you guys and PDA today?â
âMaybe someone put viagra in their coffees this morning,â Ryan suggests, looking equally as disgusted as his little sister but also twice as amused.
âWhatâs viagra?â Lauren asks.
âYo, Ryan!â Paige snaps, her hands moving tantalizingly from Azziâs tummy to rest low on her hips instead, and Azzi forces herself to look back where sheâs driving. âKeep it PG, dawg!â
âI could say the same thing to you,â he replies, and Azzi isnât looking at him but she can picture the smirk on his faceâshe knows the look all too well by now.
The three of them bicker for a few more minutes, and Azzi tries really hard to focus on where theyâre going rather than the implications of that kiss and all the questions that follow it.
Paige is the bad driver, but when she leans forward and mimics herââAll good, baby?ââAzzi worries she may be the one to crash this boat.
âââââââââââââââ
âSunscreen time!â
âNo, what?â
âWe just put some on!â
âAz, Iâm never gonna tan at this point!â
Shaking the sunscreen into her hands, Azzi motions the three siblings towards her. âCâmon, you need it.â
âI donât burn,â Lauren insists as she steps up in front of Azzi, lifting her arms dutifully anyway.
âYouâre already getting a little red,â Azzi points out, applying an extra-thick layer onto Laurenâs rosy nose.
âThis is lame,â Lauren groans, though she still lets Azzi work in silence and mumbles a thank you before she turns back to the lake.
Ryan is next, and he doesnât complain about it but he does stare down at his phone the entire time, his head only falling back down when Azzi tries to push it up. âRyan,â she sighs.
He tears his eyes away from his phone, only to look around subconsciously. Azzi knows heâs trying to see if the gaggle of teenage girls along the rocky beach have noticed him getting his sunscreen done.
âHurry up,â Paige complains, nudging her younger brother in the back, and he turns around to shove her.
Azzi fights back a smile. âYou can put it on yourself if thatâs better.â
âItâs good,â he says nonchalantly, but he hasnât quite mastered acting like he doesnât care.
Azzi finishes up quickly, ending the torture with an encouraging smile, watching him run up to join his sister where she stands on the ledge above the lake, sneaking up on her. He pushes her in and Azzi laughs at the way Lauren screeches before her eyes drift to Paige, who is now standing right in front of her, looking awfully petulant.
âYou really donât want me to tan, huh?â she says, wincing as Azzi rubs the cold lotion over Paigeâs sun-kissed shoulders.
âYour white ass is gonna burn if we donât do this every thirty minutes,â Azzi says, reiterating what she said the past five times Paige complained about the sunscreen.
âI got a little melanin in me.â
Azzi looks at the way Paigeâs blue eyes are squinting against the summer sun, the way her pale skin is already tinted pink, and raises her brows.
Paige holds her hand up. âJust gimme the sunscreen.â
Chuckling, Azzi squirts some into her hand before giving the bottle to Paige, who turns around and starts doing her front while Azzi does her back. Theyâve done this maybe a hundred times, before countless sunny fair days and hot boat rides, but today it just feels a littleâŚoff. Everything feels a little off about them recently.
Azzi worries it may be her fault. She has always been good at hiding her feelings for Paige, good at making sure her attraction doesnât show on her face just like she knows all her other emotions do. But recently, ever since they began this facadeâand more so ever since they arrived in Montanaâshe knows sheâs been slipping up. She thought sheâd be okay but she wasnât prepared for the way Paige would look at her like she wasnât pretending, the way Paige calls her pet names even when theyâre alone, the way Paige told her she liked kissing her and wants to do it again.
The way Paige did do it again.
And there lies the burning question: why?
Azzi knows Paige doesnât have feelings for her. Azzi knows that sheâs the only one who lies awake thinking about having Paige in every sense of the word, the only one who wakes up in the middle of the night thinking of Paige with an uncomfortable stickiness between her legs. She is the only one, of course, who is in love.
Then why do Paigeâs eyes and hands wander nowadays? Why does she call her baby in quiet moments? Why did she kiss her when she really didnât have to?
Could she beâattracted to Azzi? Maybe through playing this role, sheâs seen Azzi in a new light, and realized her best friend is no longer dorky and fourteen but rather a tall, pretty twenty year old with a great ass. (And yes, Azzi knows she has a great ass.)
She could be attracted to her and not be in love. She could be attracted to her and have no other attachment whatsoever. The two things can be true at once, canât they?
The thought flatters her but it mostly scares her, because sheâs barely surviving this unrequited love as it is. But with her best friend having any level of attraction back? How is she supposed to continue on like that?
âAzzi?â Paige asks, and the tone of her voice implies sheâs already said it a few times.
Azzi hums, blinking. âSorry, yeah?â
âUh,â Paige says, and itâs then that Azzi realizes her hands have stopped rubbing lotion into Paigeâs back and have sort of just come to rest on her waistâlike itâs instinctive. Like itâs natural. âYou done back there?â
âYeah, sorry,â Azzi says, but for some unknown reason she canât find it in herself to let go.
Paige glances over her shoulder. âAzzi?â she repeats.
Azzi canât really take it any longer.
âWhyâd you kiss me?â
Paigeâs sides tense up under Azziâs hands, and then sheâs stepping away, out of her grasp, and turning to face her.
The look on her face is guarded, almost closed off completely. This is dangerous territory and Azzi has barely dipped her toes in the water yet.
When Azziâs hands fall helplessly to her sides, Paige says, âI was pretending.â
As much as Azzi doesnât buy it, the wordsâand the flat, cold intonation of themâsting. âDidnât feel like it.â
âWhyâre you being weird about it?â Paige asks, eyes dancing nervously away from Azziâs face.
âIâm not, Paige. I justâI wanna know. For real.â
âYou agreed to do this for me,â Paige reminds her, as if that has anything to do with this. But, of course, it has everything to do with this, and Azzi hates how easy it makes it for the both of them to hide under a facade, a lie.
âI know,â Azzi says carefully, also taking a step back if only to get away from Paigeâs chilly stare. âBut you didnât have to kiss me this time. There wasnât a reason.â
Paige shrugs, and Azzi hates to admit it but she is much better than her younger brother at acting nonchalant. âWeâre sâposed to be a couple. I donât want my siblings getting suspicious. They know Iâm a touchy person.â
Getting the sinking feeling that Azzi wonât get anything out of this conversation other than a fight, she nods slowly, looking down at the ground. âYeah, I guess so.â
Paige, as usual, thaws at the slightest hint of weakness, taking a tiny step forward. âDid it make you uncomfortable?â
âNo,â Azzi is a little too quick to say. The kiss caught her by surprise, but theyâve only done it two times and Azzi is quickly coming to find that kissing Paige is the most comfortable thing in the worldâitâs natural, and right, and like curling up in bed with a book and a warm cup of teaâand Azzi also knows they should never do it again.
Despite the earnest answer, Paige looks at her suspiciously. âYou sure, ma? Donât ever wanna make you uncomfortable.â
Azzi does her best to fix her face, which she worries may be showing a little too much. âYeah, yeah. Iâm sure.â
âAight,â Paige says, but she still doesnât sound very convinced. Azziâs just glad sheâs letting it go.
âSorry for bringing it up,â Azzi says. Sheâs not.
At this, Paige sighs, reaching out to bridge the gap between them, running a gentle hand up and down Azziâs arm. âNah, donât be, I get it. Sorry for getting a lil defensive.â
A little? Despite the fact she doesnât believe Paige one bit, and that she doesnât like anything about the interaction they just had, Azzi manages a smile. âYouâre good.â
Paige nods, and her smile at least seems to be sincere. But as they jump into the lake, and as Paige talks Azziâs ear off while Azzi floats around lazily in a donut floatie, things feel even more off than before.
Azzi canât quite place what it is until late that night, when theyâre both going to sleep and Paige is, for the first time in ages, strangely quiet. She glances over to find Paige lying on her stomach, face turned away, breathing too quickly to be asleep.
And thatâs when Azzi notices it. The gap between them, the sheer amount of space from Azzi on her side all the way to Paige, who is almost on the edge of the bed.
Paige always sleeps close to Azzi.
And she always sleeps with her head turned towards her.

Steve and Eddie being teenage boys (even in their twenties, even though they technically are no longer teenagers), a list that I've been making in my head (some of them are stupid and some of them are sweet, but this is a long list, be warned):
Steve teaching Eddie how to burp the alphabet after drinking soda. He's phenomenal at it. Like...almost disgustingly so. It ends up turning into a one up competition pretty fast after that.
Eddie who knows how to drag race and takes Steve on ridiculously fast drives down empty streets at night (when Steve's had a terrible night). He steps on the gas and goes: "Weeee!!!" as they speed. (Please don't speed. It is dangerous. But for the sake of entertaining their pea brains, this is what they do.)
Eddie and Steve who have been participating in a several month long tagging game. They slap each other on the back of shoulders as hard as they possibly can before skittering off like a little goblin.
Steve and Eddie think it's soooo fucking funny to blow up condoms like balloons when they're stoned.
Steve and Eddie who get stoned and they go shop for munchies at the local grocery store, both hysterically giggling at figuring out how to be "normal" people in public. (They are failing miserably.)
Steve who makes Eddie play basketball with him sometimes. And then he purposefully tosses the ball at Eddie rather than the basket. It devolves into wresting in the grass, heads in elbows, knuckles across scalps, kicking each other in the shins.
One time, Steve falls asleep at Eddie's on the couch. And instead of being all sweet and doting, Eddie finds a marker and draws a penis on Steve's face. He gets water poured on his head the next time he falls asleep at Steve's as payback.
Steve and Eddie comforting each other through nightmares and hardships and healing injuries, both in sort of constipated, mumbled ways. Pats to the back and leaning in close to each other, resting heads on shoulders. Passing cigarettes or beers back and forth just to pass the time, not really talking. Exchanging words afterwards like, "You're a great friend," and "You're the best person I know." Because they both need that and recognize that, even outside of the petty, childish things they do to each other.
Eddie, who understands that the pool at Steve's is a sore spot, instead of prodding them to get in, he plans out a whole water balloon fight to stave off the summer heat.
Steve, who knows that music has been a source of calm for Eddie over the years, makes sure there's always a cassette that Eddie can play in case it gets too quiet.
Eddie and Steve who shit talk each other in the arcade, beating each other's high scores if only to rile the other one up.
Steve who always checks Eddie's ID before he goes into the adult only room in Family Video. Despite knowing that Eddie is definitely over the age of eighteen. Sometimes he denies Eddie entry in front of Keith just to make him pout. (He thinks it's cute.)
Eddie and Steve watching porn together, criticizing the moans the entire time because they know for sure it's fake. And on the same note of moans, Eddie who gets a call from Wayne and Steve fake moans in the background the entire time. Steve gets a call from his parents and Eddie shouts really loud in the background for Steve to pass the joint back. They just glare at each other before getting in another tag fight throughout wherever they're at.
Eddie who goes into Family Video after Steve strikes out again. Who just walks up to the counter and starts acting like one of those girls, twirling his hair and pouting his lips and blinking his eyes, making his voice high pitched. (It gets Steve to giggle instead of pout, so Eddie calls it a win.)
Eddie guzzling an entire can of Coke and then spraying it out of his nose when Steve makes him laugh too hard. Steve's never made anybody laugh that hard.
Steve and Eddie who claim it's not gay to make their boners kiss. I mean...what? Who said that?
Steve and Eddie who play-punch a little too hard when playing punch buggy on vacation.
Speaking of vacation, Steve and Eddie going to a beach over the summer. They chase each other up and down the sand. They roll off of the sand hills. Eddie buries Steve in the sand and applies sunscreen to his face as he just accepts his fate. Steve helps Eddie make a sandcastle, a secret talent of his being how structurally sound he can build one.
Steve and Eddie playing with Legos while talking shit about Family Video customers. They toss Sour Patch Kids into each other's mouths as they talk. Sometimes hitting each other in the face purposefully.
Steve and Eddie who get drunk one night and go catch a wild possum. Robin screams at them to put it back because, "No, you dinguses, that is not a cat!"
Eddie and Steve taking care of each other on bad pain days. Trying to entertain the other with stupid jokes or shitty movies or gossip.
Eddie sharing his uncle with Steve when he finds out that Mr. and Mrs. Harrington are terrible motherfuckers. Who makes sure Steve is comfortable in his home around Wayne.
Steve conspiring with Wayne to make sure that Eddie always has the best birthday parties. Because the one thing he really held onto from his King Steve years was how to throw a small get together, and how, especially, to make it extremely awesome and memorable.
Steve who gets Eddie new albums he's been eyeing for his birthday. Ones Eddie knows he'd never be able to afford on his own, always a little sullen when he looks at the price. Steve who still has access to his dad's credit card and will max it out just for Eddie to get his fill.
Eddie makes homemade things for Steve's birthday. Cards and trinkets and drawingsâthings Steve's old high school buddies never considered as gifts, even though they have the most impact on Steve, even though they matter the most.
Steve and Eddie who love each other, insurmountably. Despite sometimes being major buttheads to each other.

December 27, 2015, Harlem Globetrotter Meadowlark G. Lemon died at 83.
Meadowlark George Lemon III was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on April 25, 1932. He discovered the Harlem Globetrotters at 11 years old while watching a newsreel at the local theater. He was determined to one day make the team. Lemon didnât have enough money to buy basketball equipment, so he made his own. He made the Basketball hoop out of an onion sack and a coat hanger and used an empty carnation milk can as his ball. According to Lemon, he made his first shot, a two-pointer.
He continued to play basketball in high school. Realizing the fierce competition, he logged long hours on the court to strengthen his skills. He briefly attended Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University, a historically black university in Tallahassee, Florida. He was drafted into the Army in 1952. He completed basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, before serving two years in Salzburg, Germany.
While in Germany, Lemon played on an Army baseâs basketball team, averaging 55 points a game. He was discharged in 1954. He then played for the Kansas City All-Stars for a year before joining the Harlem Globetrotters. Lemon played for 23 consecutive years with the Harlem Globetrotters and earned the name âClown Prince of Basketball.â In the 1980s, he started his comedic basketball team âMeadowlark Lemonâs Bucketeers,â and then he established âThe Shooting Starsâ before founding âMeadowlark Lemonâs Harlem All-Stars.â Lemon returned to the Harlem Globetrotters in 1993 for a 50-game season.
In 1986, Lemon became an ordained minister. In 1989, he founded âCamp Meadowlark,â a camp designed to improve young peopleâs basketball skills while teaching them the importance of education and staying healthy. He earned his Doctor of Divinity in 1998. In 2003, Lemon was inducted into the NBA Basketball Hall of Fame.

Queer and trans folk around the world often take an interest in the athletes from our community, and Outsports even collects a database of all the the out LGBTQ competitors. While JK Rowling and 99 percent of conservative media were harassing two cis women boxers, 195 QT athletes represented 26 nations and none, but weâll get to that. That makes this the queerest Olympics ever, beating out the total of 186 out athletes in Tokyo and, if Queer Nation granted citizenships, would be the 14th largest national contingent at the games. That hypothetical Queer Nation would also have placed sixth in the medal count, tying the Netherlands with 15 golds but falling neatly between the Dutch and host country France on the strength of silvers and bronzes.
One happy bit of news is that in both golds and overall medal count, Queer Nation beat out every single country in the world that criminalizes same-sex boinking. The only bad news seems to be that people competing in the menâs events seem a little underqueered compared to the women. Canât we at least get a few interested in the Greco-Roman wrestling? Yr Wonkette is just asking.
...
Sure, justice in silver and gold for badass bisexual Black woman ShaâCarri Richardson, excluded from Tokyo on the basis of smoking legal weed in Eugene, Oregon, was as sweet as sativa; it was fun to see Diana Taurasi go out on the queer top with her sixth Olympic gold in a row (team USAâs eighth consecutive womenâs basketball gold); and seeing the shoulders on those women rugby players was a dream come true. But we want to speak about someone who didnât represent any country at all: Cindy Ngamba.
Ngamba is a middleweight (75kg) boxer originally from Cameroon. At 11 years old some family members fled to the United Kingdom as refugees, and brought Ngamba along. The family maintains it had the proper approval for Cindy, but that when her uncle returned to Cameroon it was lost. The UK Home Office has been threatening to deport her since the age of 16, when she was accepted to university and realized she couldnât produce her visa for her college paperwork.
Despite the threats, Ngamba fought and won many times in the UKâs amateur boxing competitions, having started as a hobbyist in the local Bolton Lads and Girls Club program. She also went on to get an undergraduate degree with honors, all while threats of deportation hung over her head. After winning a UK national championship, she met then-PM Theresa May celebrating her win and the efforts of the Lads & Girls Club where she trained. One might think that the UK might eventually forgive an 11-year-old girl for not keeping track of her paperwork herself, but the Home Office has remained resolute denying Ngamba regularized status.
What makes all this both horrifyingly inhumane and also relevant to this article is that Ngamba is an out lesbian. She has been consistently denied a path to citizenship or even legal residency, only escaping deportation because of her ability to document horror after horror inflicted on queer residents of Cameroon. International law prohibits sending a refugee back to their nation of citizenship or previous residence if they would face persecution and risk of great harm, a crime called ârefoulement.â
âIf I was sent back, I can be in danger,â Ngamba said. âSo, I was given the refugee status to be safe and protected."
Unable to represent the UK and unable to compete in qualifying competitions in Cameroon, Ngamba got an opportunity that no other stateless athlete had ever shared before 2016: she was named to the IOC Refugee Olympic Team. So far that team has only been allowed to compete in the summer games, and only in Rio, Tokyo, and this year in Paris. (They will be allowed to compete in the Winter Games for the first time in 2026.) Given the incredible barriers most refugees face, it is perhaps not surprising that no Refugee Team member has ever won a medal. But while Ngamba has faced incredible legal problems and a ruthlessly anti-immigrant government her entire time in the UK, she at least had better training facilities in her local Lads & Girls than most refugees can dream.
And the dreams paid off. Team Refugee got its first medal ever when Ngamba took home middleweight bronze. "I just want to tell every refugee out there, whether they are an athlete or not, to never give up,â she said after being asked to carry the Olympic flag at the opening of the games. When she won, the whole refugee team took to the internet to celebrate:
âThe Refugee Olympic Team is incredibly proud of Cindy Ngamba, the first EOR athlete and the first-ever refugee medallist at the Olympics,â the team posted on X, formerly Twitter. âToday, we are speechless. Cindy did it. Refugees did it!â
Yes, yes you did.

THIS SON OF A BITCH SAYS TOBRUT UNIRONICALLY and i swear you gotta smack him on the face every day for it for REAL !!!
you cant tell me you looked at him and didnt think he wears axe and sprays it after practice so he smells kinda weird after lawl
the typical anak basket i know like hiphop so his playlist is def gonna be filled with rap songs and he would play like one or two songs on the class speaker
for how mesum this fucker is he is definitely still gonna defend momoi from anyone talking borderline harassing shit about her including his pornbrained friends like he would legit grab them by the collar and lift them up to his eye level
eats your leftovers all the time. or worse, he eats your whole lunch
if youre in one of those schools where your class overlooks the basketball court he probably tried to woo you by playing basketball with his shirt unbuttoned during lunch break
kise just goes along w it and kagami is actually competitive for no reason lol (aomine def thought he was competitive about you and not basketball and they probably almost got into a fight after)
this bitch cabut kelas all the time
or he would sleep in class no in between
but honestly like he doesnt really get out of class unless kise or kagami drags invites him to play basketball during break times
people definitely thought hes dating momoi esp his friends who think like shes his type and hes like ??? i know her too well to be liking her that way (me with my best friend)
anak basket are like the it boys (kind of) so he definitely has quite the number of girls liking him
safe to say not a lot of them continue liking them for a prolonged period of time after finding out how pornbrained he is (ill take him i can fix him)
tbh i think hes pretty much a jock w questionable perspective on women (but i can fix him) but thats because he only has like. what. one girl friend? hes just kurang jauh mainnya
i genuinely am not sure how to continue this one without actually selfshipping i will stop this here but anak basket!aomine you will always be in my heart

pls literally anything kate martin itâs so dry out here đđ maybe like kate x influncer reader or something idk
Sure can! We'll get through this drought together â (Did I write too much? Yes. Do I regret it? No.)
Kate Martin x influencer/soccer player reader
How you two met: You play for the soccer team at Iowa university. So naturally, after the season ended you usually spend some of your afternoons playing pickup soccer at the local parks nearby to satisfy the itch to always be playing your sport. Another hobby you also like to do a lot is to record your journey. You vlog about your flights, your training, practices, your tips on how to have a balanced life between sports and studies, and some behind the scenes with your team members. You have a fairly large following of 500k subscribers due to your personality and engaging content. On one particular afternoon, your fiery competitive spirit and impressive skills are able to catch the attention of one particular person amidst the small crowd that always gathered to watch the simple matches. It was none other than Kate Martin. Once the match ended you had seen one of your teammates walk over towards you and Kate followed right behind her (since Kate seems so friendly i def think she hangs out with other athletes outside of basketball). As you packed your things, you felt a pair of pretty eyes staring at your every move. You decide to start the convo up by saying that you watch all her games because you love the way she plays. You watch as her cheeks get a little rosy and she goes on a cute little rant about how she watches your vlogs and videos and that, whenever she could, she would drop by to see your team play. You joke that you guys should hang up so she could teach you to play basketball before your teammate says that she and her girlfriend (who was someone you play with and against constantly in these simple matches) had to go. She leaves you alone with Kate and you bring up that you guys should definitely hang out and she brings out the idea of going to recovery together cuz why not since she will undoubtedly be busy with her own season starting. You agree and thatâs the beginning of how you two started talking.
How you got close: So as mentioned above, you guys definitely see each other around the athletic and rehab center in the university. Since you practice off season, you prefer to be safe than sorry and attend your recovery session religiously. Thanks to this, you guys are able to strike up conversations here and there but they're never too long. Not until you need to get into the dreaded ice bath for one session after being inexplicably sore for days on end. You decide that it's the perfect time to get your camera out and record your funny reaction to it to later post it. While walking over to your doom, you come face to face with Kate. You shamelessly note that she was wearing really revealing clothes. She smiles and asks where youâre headed and you explain and she immediately asks if she could join you cuz she was going over there too. Once you get there you turn on your camera and explain to the viewers what was going to happen. While you did that, you felt Kate looming behind you. You stop the camera and ask whatâs wrong and she gets a little embarrassed asking you cute questions about how the camera worked. You laugh and give her a little class while you two sit side by side while you show her the basics. She jokes that she would love to be your camerawoman and you donât have it in you to say no. Not with the way she stares at you with her eyes. (Anyway before I get carried away) You set the camera up so that it catches you both while you get into the big tub of ice. She laughs as she watches you shuffle awkwardly towards the cold pit of despair and pokes at you with jokes about how you look rn. You shoot her a look and grab a handful of water to throw her way. She shrieks and grabs your wrist to stop you, letting her hold lingering a little longer than normal (you also note just how strong Kate is). Snapping out of whatever was between you all of the sudden with her touch, you look at the camera and think screw it, getting in hastily without double thinking about it. You regret it immediately, screaming and Kate doubles down with laughter. What she doesnât expect is for you to yank her inside out of spite. In an attempt to stop herself from falling into the cold water, she holds a hand out towards the edge, but youâve tugged her down enough for her to have no choice but to step over the edge and fall into the tub. This, however, leads to you being placed in another unfortunate position. She holds the edges of the tub, trying to adjust to the coldness, while single handedly pinning you to the edge of the metal tub. It takes a few seconds to register, especially with you looking up at her while she lets out short puffs of air, while her muscles on her toned stomach contract. Kate seems to notice this and moves back to the other side. You clear your throat and turn to the camera with a funny face while you ignore the rosy blush that has settled on Kateâs face. After this it was just a mixture of flirting and flattery between you too.
She went to see you often when you played and brought you snacks or just went to simply support you. Itâs obvious you started to show up more recently to her games to watch her play in person instead of from your home. Itâs hard to say if that was the reason, but whenever you went to her games she always showed off. Whether it was double-doubles or even one triple-double. When the games would end she would act all cocky and say that it was normal but you would see the blinding smile on her lips when you would tell her good job. What you liked was how the adrenaline crash would hit her (not in a bad way) after a hard and long game and win. She would be super soft and slow and be all cute. You once insisted on driving her towards her dorms because she was too tired and she insisted on putting on music. You let her ofc and what follows is her singing her heart out while lazily looking over towards you every now and then. She reaches over and uses your hand as a mic and you canât help but laugh. After a few songs you notice how the playlist switches to flowers songs and Kate never lets go of the hold of your hand.
No question she loves being in your vids. She has also definitely made you do a challenge video about hot sauces (ik itâs random but she def would). Other than that, you both do a bunch of silly challenges together. She also gave you the idea of starting this new âseriesâ of her just basically teaching you the basics for basketball and vice versa. This becomes a huge hit online. What goes on behind the scenes is different tho. On video, you guys seem strictly platonic and playful with you cracking jokes and making fun when you mess up really bad on one certain move. However, once the cameras are off Kate is more free and less tense. She is more touchy, especially when showing you how to shoot the basketball properly (Like you canât tell me this woman wouldnât wrap her arms around your shoulders to position your hands on the ball. Donât even get me started with defense and the way yall would be so close). You (I) also find it lowkey hot whenever you guys are done with your little secession and sheâs panting and sweaty. You lowkey like it even more when she gets out of the locker room showers all clean and fresh.
How she asks you out: After basically a few weeks of her popping up in your vids both of your fans suddenly notice you two getting closer and closer. One day youâre recording while walking to get a massage. You turn a corner and come face to face with what seems like a wall. You jump back when you realize you just ran into Kate. You turn the camera off and smile up at her. You ask her where sheâs headed but somethingâs off. You watch as she doesnât look at you and avoids any type of eye contact as she fumbles over her words. A laugh comes from you as you go up to turn your camera back on but she shocks you by snatching the camera away. You ask her what was wrong and she mumbles something you canât catch so you ask her to speak up and even get on your tiptoes to lean into her space to hear her better. She tries again and you can faintly hear her asking you out on a date. To say you were shocked was an understatement but you would be lying if you said you didnât feel something forming between you too after these weeks spent together. Ofc you said yes.
You guys go out to a cliche aquarium date (bc i love aquariums what about it). Once you guys get there it seems like something has lifted off her shoulder and sheâs acting like a totally different person. Sheâs more touchy and a real charmer (shamelessly putting an arm around your shoulder and uses her height over you to her advantage. When someone gets too close she definitely stands next to you and the person to create distance and def had a sweet interaction with a kid I mean c'mon). Sheâs taking sneaky pics of you and trust she would kiss you under those tunnels with the blue lights and fishes, making her look so good after you both tiptoe around it all day.
How it is to date her: (keeping it on the DL is so sexy idc what anyone says) Although Kate isnât a huge name like Caitlin, you both reach an agreement to keep it on the dl. That and the addition of your evergrowing vlog page. This being said, Kate would appear more in your videos and itâs not really a secret. She shows up in your study videos in the background, helps out with your workout videos, does Q&As with you, and when you're off season she definitely travels with you.
Sheâs a very caring person and def loves to cuddle after a long day. She also kisses the ground you walk on (You canât tell me she doesnât have photo albums of you and her). (Can I also say that sheâs a tremendous kisser? TRUST that she will make out with you in a secret room in the stadium because she just canât wait until you get home after a game). Kate is your personal cheerleader in games and would treat you like a princess after your games (sheâs drawing a bath and brushing your hair and basically doing all the work for you while praising you on how well you did).
After a hard loss however itâs a whole different story. You canât lie thoâŚItâs your favorite side of Kate. You can see it in her as soon as the buzzer sounds (especially after she scores a lot and still loses oml). Kate basically disappears into the crowd and into the locker room before you can catch her. After a bit of time and unanswered calls and text messages, you decide to walk towards the locker rooms and are surprised when you're tugged into a small storage room. Kate immediately gets to work and smashes her lips with yours and lets her hands wander around you. You just love the way her rosy cheeks look and how sinful her eyes were as she let them shamelessly look you over. Kate isnât up for any talking tho. Her moves are sloppy and desperate, like she couldn't care less if someone busted you two right then and there. Whenever you try to talk and try to get her to calm down she just goes back and kick starts another makeout sesh.

âDream Team, Baby!â (Nandor x reader)
Word count: 1,090
Age restrictions: 16+ (vulgar language)
Tags: Fluff, crack, you determine whether the relationship is platonic or romantic
Synopsis: Nandor and Guillermo decided that local community Basketball practices would be a fun pastime activity. But Nandor becomes way too competitive with the coach.
Authorâs note: WRITERS BLOCK IS KILLING ME:_( Had to learn rules of basketball for this one. Please forgive me, actual basketball players.
_____________________________________________
The strobe lights illuminated a sterile changing room in the local sports complex of Staten Island. You picked one of the lockers and put away the clothes, that you were planning on changing into after the practice. Once you closed it up, you took your towel, water bottle, whistle and made your way into the hallway, that led to the good old basketball court. It was clean, newly polished and ready to be stomped all over by your students. With your keys, you opened the supply closet and started to prepare for the practice, that would start in fifteen minutes.
You were a coach for the local community sports club. Mostly, your student base consisted of people over 40, who either had a mid-life crisis or had nothing better to do. They didnât really play well or even try for that matter. On average, they were there to chat and get a little bit of physical activity into their lives and you were okay with that. Ever since you got out of professional basketball, due to really toxic circumstances, you just wanted a calm and simple life.
People started to slowly fill the spacious gym. You greeted every single one by name and smiled as they told you about some mundane shit that happened since the last time you saw each other, which was literally two days ago. To your delight, there were some new younger faces in the community. Two men, who couldnât look more different from each other, but also strangely completed one another.
âHello! Youâre here for the basketball practice, right? My name is [reader]. I will be your coach.â You shook each of their hands.
âGreetings, [reader]. My name is Nandor. This is my fami-⌠I mean, totally normal friend Guillermo.â The taller man smiled.
âNandor and Guillermo. Got it! First name basis is okay?â They nodded. âRight. Itâs very nice to have you here today. Now, tell me, do you have any prior experience in basketball?â You went by the standard script.
âI have played some basketball in high school, but⌠not much after that. I know the rules though.â Guillermo explained.
âOkay, thatâs a good start. And you, Nandor?â
âWell, I have had quite the practice over the years, so I would say that I am rather skilled in this sport. Maybe even more skilled than you.â He proudly said.
âThat is greaaaatâŚâ You uttered through a very strained smile. You heard this type of comments a lot from people who could barely throw a ball into the hoop. âLetâs hit the court, shall we?â
Youâve collected all the students to stand in the line.
âOkay, everyone, letâs start with a light jog around the court. Two laps, letâs go.â You led people behind you.
The warmup was quite normal. You glanced at the new guys from time to time and they seemed to be keeping up very well with the rest. After some simple stretches you went on to actual practice, doing little obstacle race with the balls to learn control and speed. Your job there was to just make sure everyoneâs doing their part, observe and pick up the cones that people occasionally knocked over by accident. You couldnât help, but notice, that Nandor guy was actually very comfortable with the ball. Maybe he did play a lot, like he said. But you were yet to see him in action.
Finally, the majority of the lesson passed and there was about twenty minutes left for a match.
âAlrighty, guys, gather up here.â They all came over. âWeâre going to play now. Liam, Sophie, Joseph, Dylan and Madison, you are team number one. Will, Aiden, Nandor, Guillermo and Val, you are team two. Now, remember, this is just a practise game. Donât get too competitive. Focus on your techniques.â People nodded and mumbled in affirmation. âGood. Letâs put you in your places.â
Once youâve briefly ran through the main positions for the newbies, you let them play, to see how they do. Surprisingly, that Nandor guy was actually good. Very good even. You could tell he actually practiced basketball before. Guillermo was also doing unexpectedly well. Although, you realised your mistake of putting the only two good players on the same team. Obviously, team number two absolutely crushed the other one, but thankfully, nobody was really upset about it. You were happy that people accepted both newbies so quickly. They complemented each otherâs games and you concluded the lesson.
Finally, working hours are over! You were already heading for the changing room, when someone tapped your shoulder. You turned to discover it was in fact Nandor.
âHello?â You smiled.
âGreetings, [reader]. I would like to play a game with you one on one.â
Not this shit again. âOh, Iâm sorry, I really have to get home. Iâm babysitting my niece this evening and-.â
âOkay, letâs try another way.â He looked right into your eyes. âYou will submit to my dark power⌠and play basketball with me.â
âI-⌠Okay⌠Yeah, okay. Sure. Letâs do it.â For some reason you changed your mind rather quickly and returned to the court, taking a ball out of the bin on the way.
You stood on one side of the mid-court line and he stood on the other, both of you getting heated with sheer competitiveness. And so, it was on. You were stepping on each otherâs heels. He scored, then you did and it was always a tie. That is, until you saw through his tactics and started to score way more, which definitely infuriated Nandor and he started to play even harder. Suddenly, a voice broke out:
âMaster! There you are! We really have to go now.â Guillermo came to the court and both stopped playing for a second.
âGuillermo, I will leave, when I find that it is time to leave.â Nandor protested.
âBut you have the council duties remember? Itâs an important hearing today.â
âYouâre on the city council?â You looked at Nandor, because to you he seemed like the last person to be a part of it.
âNo, Iâm on the vampi- I mean, yes. Yes, city council. My favourite.â He nodded.
âMaster, Nadja will execute us, if we donât show up on timeâŚâ Guillermo mumbled.
âIâm not scared of her!⌠Fine, we will leave now.â He turned to look at you. âBut itâs not the end, [reader]. You will suffer defeat. Next week.â
Both men left, bickering quietly with each other.
It was true though, Nandor started to challenge you after every practice.

alright more pre-crash yellowjackets thoughts! this time: shitty high school jobs they had! (i worked 5 different shitty minimum wage jobs between the ages of 15-18 and have thought about the concept with more gravity than it deserves sorry)
shauna: was a tutor during the school year for literally every subject. she was the only reason jeff and randy passed their junior year. even though she could use the money, shauna never charged any of her teammates if they needed some help. when school was out during the summers, she had a seasonal job at the concession stand at the local concert venue. pretty easy money and she liked listening to the bands play
jackie: unemployed. being the coolest girl in school is a full time job, after all! note: tried to get a job with shauna at the concession stand. it was a complete and utter disaster. she lasted a week, and only made it that long because of how much shauna covered for her. after that didnât pan out, when shauna worked weekends, jackie would always buy a concert ticket⌠just to hang out by the concession stand and talk with shauna for the whole show
nat: her first job was working at the local pizza parlor. was employed there for 6 months until it got shut down because, as it turns out, the whole thing was a money laundering front for the mob (which explains why nat never got fired despite being actually kinda bad at making pizzas). after that, she goes to work the 6pm-midnight shift at the grimiest gas station in wiskayok. except for the occasional stick up, it was a quiet job where no one bothered her and she could buy her own cigarettes. however she was constantly sleep-deprived having to get up for school in the mornings. definitely created energy drink concoctions that would send most people into cardiac arrest. van and the other yellowjackets would always stop by to see her on shifts and nat always gives them free slurpees
van: started working at the movie theater in the mall when she was 14 (the owner needed the help and did not ask enough questions). van is the rare sort of person that is absolutely beloved by both customers and her fellow employees and no one was surprised when she became a manager. she has the best customer service and will help out all the other employees with whatever they need. to this day she still holds the record for most Employee of the Month awards. also i just know van was the ultimate hookup and snuck her friends into shows and definitely took home the leftover popcorn after her shift. if she knew nat was on shift at the gas station, sheâd stop by on her way home and give her some
taissa: never worked during the school year because she took way too many classes and extracurriculars (she was a 3-sport athlete: cross country in the fall, basketball in the winter, soccer in the spring. also did debate team AND student gov). her parents actually tried to talk her out of getting a summer job, but taissa has never relaxed a day in her life. she took a job at a clothing store in the mall and claimed she chose it for the employee discounts. the fact the store was located in the same mall as the movie theater was unrelated to anything whatsoever (tho taissa and vanâs break schedules coincidentally always lined up and theyâd hang out and go to the arcade where theyâd have competitions⌠loser had to buy the winner food from the food court afterwards).
anyways tai would have been a perfect employee⌠if she didnât have the worldâs worst customer service (âfor the fifth and final time, i am not going to give you a goddamned refund if you donât have the RECEIPT and if you try putting that ugly ass blouse in my face again i will shove it up your-â) âŚhad to have routine talks with HR throughout her tenure there. her manager gently suggested therapy, once.
lottie: didnât need the money but definitely got a job out of boredom. decided to lifeguard as a summer job. it was basically getting paid to tan and tell kids to stop running. she had a sixth sense for when itâs about to start storming. her coworkers stopped questioning it after a few months and now when lottie says to get everyone out of the pool, they get everyone out of the pool. from lifeguarding lottie actually learned enough about pool maintenance to do the work and check the chemical balances on the pool at her own house. her father thinks the whole thing is ridiculous, her mother thinks itâs nice she has a hobby
laura lee: didnât work a paid job but volunteered. she played piano for the local church services and on weekdays she worked evenings at the local food bank. if she sees anyone from school show up, it stays between her and God. she has managed to rope each of the yellowjackets into volunteering with her at least once
mari: worked at a local restaurant. tried to be a waitress, but on her very first day she got three different customer complaints about her attitude and so the owner put her in the kitchen where she became a linecook. she had more healthcode violations in her 1.5 years of working there than every other employee combined. the manager fired her on a weekly basis but she always just showed up to work the next day like nothing happened and the boss always took her back because mari is the best damn linecook he ever had
akilah: sheâs a baby and was too young to work an actual job but definitely did babysitting (mostly for family). definitely was the kid-whisperer. had plans to work at library once she turned 16
misty: volunteered at the local retirement home and developed a love-hate relationship with an 85yo named Ethel (and by love-hate i mean: misty loved ethel, ethel hated misty)
#yellowjackets#op#while everyone else discusses in depth about the themes of the show and theories for the upcoming season#i am over here yelling âGAS STATION CLERK NATALIEâ into a microphone#i know i shouldve said something cooler like a vinyl shop or something but i couldnât do it#also i have either worked or had a friend who worked all the jobs i listed#so this is certified authentic#taivan#i feel like thereâs just enough to tag that

Since you apparently followed some Olympics, I have a question about that. Are Olympics something big in the states? Like, something culturally important? (besides winning medals, you did great about that) I can never tell, with how big college sports is and stuff like baseball and others, if things like the Olympics are "as big" in the states as well? Like, here it's broadcasted all day long on the biggest national TV stations and such. Not everyone will care, but it's pretty big. (and Paris did great with it, alas now the French hunger games will continue, or maybe the break also included the paralympics hopefully....)
hmm
i will say *yes* we do follow it. one of our major tv networks (we don't have a national network) bids for it, this year it was NBC, and for the full two weeks (depending on the difference in time zone) rebroadcasts the more popular sports (gymnastics, basketball, swimming, the track and field events) here for "prime time:" 6:30 PM to 10 PM (1800 to 2200) and then after the evening news for highlights, interviews, and less popular sports and for a few hours at a time during the day all weekend. This year, there was full coverage on NBC's premium pay network and online.
Most local news show medal counts and do "this athlete in this sport you only hear about every four years is from here" specials. There's always a lot of talk about the athletes that are from the bigger university "oh these college rivals are teammates, now." The men's basketball team gets A LOT of coverage because it's all the stars of the game playing together.
The big newspapers do medal counts and the sports sections are full of articles, usually there's something on the front page as well. Magazines get put out, medalists get covers of the bigger news and sports magazines. We have a nationally carried cereal brand called "Wheaties" that loves to put the athletes on the box. Coca Cola always has a broad swathe of the advertising and sells "olympic special cases and cans"
This year seemed like better coverage, the venue, and interesting competition made for more people talking about it than i've seen in a while. What usually comes up is the "okay for two weeks i'm patriotic" people who aren't sports people and "i have a lot of opinions about this sport i've only been watching for five minutes." wE love the underdog stories, we love when smaller countries do well, we like to beat certain countries just for the fun of the rivalries (the Australians in swimming, for instance) so yeah, It's a pretty big deal and, at its best, when we let it, it brings us together a little.
