Wheel Suckers Podcast Review

The inofficial she36 motto is #supportyourlocalgirlgang (and our tongues are firmly in cheek with the #fasterthanyourgirlfriend motto on our kit). We support our gang in all their endeavours, whether it’s because Kim and Kate have kicked arse in a crit, whether Tammy has started her first shifts as a bike messenger, or Pia has generously donated her time and culinary skills for a bake sale + fundraising ride to support refugee women in Berlin. It’s time for a related motto: support your local girl gang across the English Channel. Simply rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?

The grrrrlgang across the English Channel are Jenni from the London Bike Kitchen and Alex from the café/bar/workshop Look mum no hands, and their Wheel Suckers podcast. I met them at the Berliner Fahrradschau this year. Jenni and Alex will make you laugh, and they’ll make you cry because you’re laughing so hard! The home-made sound effects, vivacity and genuine interest in making cycling inclusive won me over immediately.

I cracked up as Alex described all the outlandish April Fools’ Day pranks that LMNH played (the »men’s only leg-shaving tutorial for cycling« and the scented candle collaboration with Schwalbe tyres and LMNH were pure gold), and whenever Jenni reads aloud from Richard’s Bicycle Book about choosing a saddle. Oh, Richard, you hipster you!

The Wheel Suckers podcast fills the gap in my cycling podcast inner tube that I didn’t know existed: it’s comedic gold, it’s feminist, and it’s filled with an insightful kind of cheese! Listen now on Soundcloud or iTunes.

Panel: Letting Ourselves Go

Older women are an invisible generation in cycling, yet many of us are out there leading active and diverse cycling lives - with no intention of slowing down or taking it easy. 

From road racers and mountain bikers to the rise of e-bikers, it's time to ditch the tired stereotypes and celebrate everyone who cycles. On Thursday 5th April, we hosted a panel at Look mum no hands! showcasing older women who cycle and how cycling enhances their lives, careers, well-being, alongside discussing barriers to participation and, of course, how to get more women on bikes.
