The Monkeys of the Monastery and the Mountain
Summary: Azure Lion falls in love with Sun Wukong when visiting Master Subodhi. He also falls in love with Wukong's scowling shadow.
-_-
"Ugh, I can't believe I have to lower myself to this."
Azure Lion, steed of bodhisattva Manjusri and favored general in the celestial army, wisely did not speak up. This lord knew as well as him that he didn't have to do this. There were many other nobles in the Heavenly Court that were more qualified. This lord had just made a fool of himself at the Queen Mother's feast and just wanted to escape the inevitable gossip.
Azure couldn't blame him... much. He too wanted to escape the stifling atmosphere and all the noise of greedy nobles. If he didn't agree to "guard" this lord, he was certain that he would've stabbed either himself, the next noble who talked, or an unfortunate guard who crossed his path.
Although his choice of company only added fuel to the desire.
The clouds parted, revealing their location. The Cave of the Slanted Moon and Three Stars was a Taoist temple that clung to the side of a mountain with white walls and red roofing, subtle touches of the moon and stars here and there, like the stones on the front lawn they landed on.
The doors opened, revealing the master of the temple. Patriarch Subodhi, shifu and master to his students, walked down the stairs and came to a stop. He bowed his head. "Lord Xueqin," he said. "What brings you to my humble temple?"
"I'm here on orders of the Jade Emperor in order to check upon your teachings," the lord said, puffing up his chest. Clearly, he had noticed the lack of a full bow. "You are-"
"Under orders to not teach the forbidden ways of gaining immortality, as I have been for the past few centuries." The Taoist raised a brow. It might've been Azure's imagination, but there was a spark of panic in his eyes. "I am well aware of my orders. However, you did not need to bring a guard with you."
The lord raised a brow. "I heard what happened when Lord Fan visited your humble monastery and I just want to be sure that there are no incidents this time." Azure bit back a snicker. Everyone had heard about what happened during that visit. The fact that he spent months in his chambers and refused to go out in public without a veil was enough.
Patriarch Subodhi sighed, the panic fading from his eyes to instead be replaced by amusement. “I see. If that makes you feel better, then I welcome you both.”
Azure bowed at the waist. “It is an honor to visit, shifu.”
Subodhi did not respond, but he could see a smile tug on his lips as he turned and guided them inside.
The main courtyard was full of students, all dressed in simple grey training outfits, busy from sparring to reading to rushing to do what looked like chores. Women and men alike mixed, only marked by the fact that the women were allowed to keep their hair. One of those women met Azure’s eyes and bowed her head politely.
Azure bowed his head back before the doors to the shifu’s personal study opened. Subodhi stopped before he and the lord entered. “If you wish to wait outside, that is allowed,” he said to Azure. “We should not take too long.”
He was liking this man even more. Azure could hear the quiet offer. While it was tempting to watch Subodhi frighten this quivering noble, having never faced a foe that he couldn’t deal with via gossip, it also sounded boring to just sit there. The frightened spark in the noble’s eye sealed the deal.
“Thank you,” Azure said, giving another bow. He didn’t intend to stand outside the entire time. “It’s been a while since I’ve been allowed to stretch my legs and seeing your lovely monastery is a great excuse.”
The noble hummed, still looking terrified. Azure could see the gears thunking in his empty head. He would probably interrogate Azure on anything “suspicious” he saw. Azure doubted it. Subodhi simply nodded and led the noble inside, shutting the doors.
Azure began to walk. There was a side hallway, leading away from the main courtyard, and he took it.
The monastery was lovely, with several branching yards, most set up for training based on the sparring groups or meditation circles he saw. One led to a large herbal garden, where students tended the plants. A few were gathered around a large patch of what looked to be turmeric. “- get it,” a student said, holding a flower and turning it back and forth. “We’re all working with the same soil and supplies. How is Wukong’s stuff already flowering?”
“It’s Wukong,” another said. “He has a green thumb.”
“I know he does, but that doesn’t explain how time speeds up.”
“Again, it’s Wukong. Nature just likes him.”
“I would say it’s more than that…”
Azure walked away. While it was interesting to hear that nature apparently liked a very good gardener, that didn’t scream “Subodhi breaking the rules on teaching illegal immortality.” That just sounded like a possible affinity with the natural world or a spell to encourage plant growth. Shifty, but not illegal.
A set of large doors caught his eye. A guess made him reach out and push into the room, revealing it to be full of books. Ah, like he suspected.
Like many monasteries Azure had visited, the library was one of the largest rooms. This had to be the largest selection he had seen, though, drawing on many subjects from one glance. It wasn't a surprise, Subodhi prided himself on his knowledge and his desire to know more.
Azure studied the shelves as he walked past, taking mental notes here and there of certain books. Yellowtusk would love this library. He should recommend him for the next visit. If they waited for a century like they were supposed to, the collection would only get bigger. Azure turned the corner, still dwelling on the thought, and felt himself come to a stop.
His heart skipped a beat.
In the center of the library was a comfortable-looking sitting area, with many tables and pillows ready for someone to sit down. Large windows let in sunshine that illuminated the room during the day. However, it also illuminated the one person that sat in this room.
A monkey demon sat at the table, his golden fur lit by the sunshine, his long curls braided back. Several scrolls and loose paper were scattered around him. Golden eyes were focused on the scroll he read, one hand using ink to scrawl out notes. He wore the robes of a student, although Azure hadn’t seen any other demon students, the cuff of his writing hand stained with drops of ink here and there.
He was gorgeous.
Azure wasn’t sure how to react. He had thought people were pretty before, from soldiers who caught his eye to maids who attended the nobles. His dear sworn brothers Peng and Yellowtusk were beautiful in their own ways. But he had never seen someone like him.
It would probably be rude to just walk up and attempt to talk to him, but Azure’s longing nearly knocked him off his feet. He had the feeling that if he didn’t at least try to talk to this beauty, he would regret it for the rest of his days.
He stepped forward and cleared his throat.
“Hell-”
A tail whacked him in the face. Normally, he would brush it off, except the strike made him stumble back, caught off-guard by its strength as his breath rocked out of his lungs.
The monkey didn’t seem to notice that his wagging tail had claimed a victim. He hummed at whatever he was reading and then rolled the scroll up. Azure blinked at the ceiling as the monkey grabbed another scroll. Before he could unroll it, the doors to the library opened up.
“As you can see,” Subodhi sounded annoyed as he gestured to the library. “Nothing on immortality.”
The lord looked ragged. Azure was torn between amusement and concern- it had only been about ten minutes, if he was correct. What had happened in such a period of time?
“What about that?” the lord huffed, pointing at the golden beauty. “What is that creature? Why is it here?” He looked down and if Azure cared about his opinion, he would’ve been embarrassed. “Did it attack my guard?!”
The monkey looked up as Subodhi’s eyes went wide. “Uh, what?” He looked down and those beautiful golden eyes, like miniature suns, went wide. “Oh, crap, I am so-”
“It’s fine,” Azure rose up to his knees, raising a hand to hold the monkey’s knee. It may have been forward, but he didn’t care. “You were so focused. It was my fault for trying to interrupt you.” The monkey blinked and then smiled. It was so sweet and warm that Azure’s entire being warmed.
And then the noble spoke up.
"Is this your pet?" the lord huffed, eyeing the monkey as though he wasn't sure what to do with him. Azure felt his fur bristle protectively at the annoyed noise the monkey made as he stood, his brows furrowing tightly together and his teeth bared in a grin.
"No." Subodhi's words broke the staredown as he walked over, stepping between Azure and the monkey. He settled a hand on the monkey's shoulder and, like magic, the monkey relaxed. Not by much, but it looked better. "This is one of my students-"
"Sun Wukong," the monkey said, the name sounding more like a threat.
Azure's heart skipped a beat as he remembered the name, both from Subodhi to the students gathered around the turmeric. Sun Wukong. It was his new favorite word- it was spelled the same as the word for the sun and how fitting it was, for a monkey that glowed like the sun.
"Respect," Subodhi warned his student in a hiss. He turned back to the lord. "In any case, he is a special case and has proven himself to be one of my best students- don't get a big head about that." The last was a warning to Sun Wukong, whose frightening grimace had turned into a proud little smile.
The lord still eyed Wukong as if he was considering a threat. Azure stepped closer, but Subodhi stepped to the side, pulling Wukong with him. He wondered, for a second, if he imagined the nasty glare that the elder shot him before the man cleared his throat. "In any case, I believe it's best that you leave."
"Not until-" the lord protested.
"Is there anything else you honestly need to see?" Subodhi said, his voice stern. However, Azure could see his hand flexing in and out on Wukong's shoulder. Based on the wince that trembled the smaller's form, so could Wukong.
"If I may speak up," Azure said, stepping around Subodhi to hover on Wukong's other side. "I have been walking around the monastery and I have seen nothing that suggests Patriarch Subodhi has violated the law. While Wukong is a surprise-" That time, he was certain. Subodhi was glaring at him. "He's not a violation. He's clearly a good student based on the ink marks on his cuffs."
The lord huffed, glaring at the three of them. Finally, he nodded. "Fine," he said, like a toddler denied of a toy. "You pass inspection."
Subodhi bowed his head. "Thank you," he said, unwrapping that protective arm from Wukong to make a shooing motion with his swatter. The lord turned an interesting shade of red. "Now, please leave. You're interrupting my student's study."
The lord huffed again and stormed out of the library. Azure trailed behind, feeling Subodhi follow close behind. He glanced back and met Wukong's golden eyes before the monkey sat back down at his study spot. He probably looked weird with the smile he felt forming, but that wasn’t important.
I hope I can talk to you again soon.
-_-
Unfortunately, Azure didn't get a chance to talk to Sun Wukong before he left the monastery.
He didn't do it every day, but at least once a month, Azure would slip to Earth, conveniently near Subodhi's monastery. The first time hadn't been on purpose. Another celestial steed had gotten loose and was trying to take over a village. Azure and Peng had been successfully wrangling the cursing creature until Azure's eye caught a hint of sunshine. There had been a group of familiar uniforms, the front being Sun Wukong, vibrating so hard that about three students had to keep him in place.
The steed kicking him in his face was his own fault. He would give Peng that.
With the realization, Azure started hanging around the village and the mountain at least once a month to at least see the pretty monkey. He had good reason! Power-hungry demons stalked this area, interested in Subodhi's students. He was being helpful!
Subodhi didn't seem to get that. Every time they ran into each other, Subodhi's friendly look faded more and more from the first time. Azure made the mistake of asking about Wukong one time, and his hands were bleeding for days from shielding his head. It didn’t stop him from visiting.
He would just have to keep things quiet.
"You know that Wukong doesn't live here anymore, right?"
"Excuse me?"
The student who had walked up to him stared steadily back. "He got expelled two days ago. Apparently, for showing off the special lessons Shifu was teaching him, I guess? But he's not here."
Azure's heart sank. Two days ago. He had missed the perfect chance to talk to him, to maybe comfort him. Being expelled had to be hard, right? "I- Where does he live?"
"I dunno, someplace called Huago? All I know is that it's on the west coast and there's a lot of monkeys." The student hiked up the bag of groceries they had probably come for in the first place. "All I know is that he's not here, so you can stop stalking us." And with that, they walked away.
Azure didn’t realize he was moving until a shadow slammed into his face.
He stumbled back, the portal he summoned thankfully dissipating before he went back through. He looked around, realizing he was in the middle of a jungle. He was much higher than he expected- was he on a mountain? In the distance, he could see something shining, darting around a larger figure in armor. He knew that gleam, even when the power running through didn’t exist.
Before he could step towards it, another shadow wrapped around his chest, hard enough to crush his ribs, and yanked him to the ground. “I guess you were the celestial warrior Subodhi warned me about,” a voice said from overheard. Azure looked up and, once again, his heart raced.
Unlike Wukong, who was soft and glowing with sunshine, this monkey was hard and dark, all except his eyes. Those eyes gleamed with violent violet power. His clothes were a mess, ripped and torn and dirty, cuffs tight on his wrists. Chains wrapped around the muscle of his arm, the ends broken. It didn’t stop the fact that he was beautiful, dark curls cut to frame his handsome, blood-stained face.
Was it just those two, or were all monkeys so lovely?
The monkey clapped his hands and purple sparks darted out. When he pulled them apart, a staff like the one he saw Wukong wield sometimes formed, glowing and made of the same magic that held Azure down. Unlike Wukong’s staff, both ends were spiked. If he got hit with that, Azure was certain it would be nasty.
“I’m surprised you even had the courage to try and follow Wukong here,” the warrior said. “While the Demon King of Confusion surprised me, small fry like you don’t.”
And with that, the monkey dove down and Azure barely had enough time to escape his bindings.
It became a blur of fighting- dodge, strike, uppercut, taste your blood in your mouth, hit him back, don’t feel bad. As he fought and dodged, Azure wondered if sparring like Wukong would be like this. Was this warrior just as studious as Wukong was? They appeared similar far away and up close, save for the color of their fur and the color of their power, how far did those similarities go?
Azure found himself tumbling into the brush with one good strike that definitely bruised his ribs. Through the shrubbery, he could see the warrior tense, ready to follow, but a loud crash that sounded like boulders falling, the sound of several panicked monkeys, and a loud “MIHOU!” made him pause. He glanced back and then nodded before he disappeared, the shadows swallowing him up.
Azure waited before summoning another portal, this time focusing on the warrior. His portal was kind enough to drop him off in another patch of shrubbery so he was hidden from the scene.
The giant demon was collapsed on the ground, the air smelling of blood. Wukong was bathed in red, so much so that Azure’s fingers twitched with the need to grab him and clean him until he saw the golden fur. The warrior- Mihou, based on the yell- hovered next to him. It appeared the two were concerned about each other, talking over each other and reaching out and holding each other. A loud cry of a monkey turned their attention away from each other to the small, white-furred monkeys gathering around them. Wukong beamed, his smile warming Azure’s heart, as he reached down and scooped several up in his arms, allowing the rest to climb over him and Mihou. The warrior didn’t protest, his gaze so tender that it made him melt.
He didn’t realize it until then, but his heart had room for two.
He just needed to figure out how.
-_-
A few years passed and Azure finally felt it was time to make his move.
It hurt when Sun Wukong didn't recognize him when he offered his services and his brotherhood. But Azure brushed it off. The course of love never did run smooth- Macaque didn't seem to recognize him either, but he sometimes noticed him squinting at him, as if he thought him familiar but wasn't sure why.
Peng and Yellowtusk had their doubts about Wukong's leadership ability, but Azure was certain that his love could lead. His kindness to his people was far greater than the Jade Emperor's compassion towards the entire universe. He had his doubts about Macaque as a consort, but that didn't matter at the moment.
Especially not when he was presenting him with flowers.
"They reminded me of you," he said. It was true- the asters and plum blossoms reminded him of the color of Macaque's magic and his favorite fruit. In his opinion, this was a good test-run bouquet.
Macaque blinked and then eyed him as if waiting for a joke. Azure kept his face open and honest, hoping that Macaque would accept the gift. The shadow monkey finally hummed, taking the bouquet. "Thank...you, Azure, these are-"
A golden blur rushed between them and slapped the bouquet straight out of Macaque's hands. Both monkey and lion blinked as the bouquet disappeared into the distance before a larger bouquet of flowers, leaning towards red and pink, was stuffed in the former's hands.
"Macaque prefers it when I give him flowers," Sun Wukong huffed, crossing his arms with a pout. Azure opened his mouth, unsure of how to respond to that, before his love turned to his moon. His stance grew gentler. “These are the right colors, right? For the last big scene of your play?”
“Ye- Yeah, they are!” Macaque held the flowers closer. His eyes shone as he smiled and Azure felt his heart skip a beat. “I didn’t think you would remember what I said.”
“Pssh, of course! You’ve been working on that play for weeks!”
Azure relaxed in the sun, enjoying the sight of their smiles. This was just a hiccup. There would be plenty of time to court his monkeys of monastery and mountain.

CURIOUS
Xiyouji Patriarch Subodhi exiling Sun Wukong & literally threatening him with thousands of years of torture if he reveals who his teacher was because the monkey was being a little prideful vs. Monkie Kid Sun Wukong being unrelentingly positive towards his student even when said student wants to talk about how he may have messed up during literal potentially world-destroying calamities. Is this anything.

I can easily imagine a situation where Wukong is actually fem or trans actually. Like, China, especially ancient China, is a hugely patriarchal society, and Wukong is born into a matriarchal society. One that has a pretty significant language barrier considering Wukong describes speaking chinese or any none monkey language really as "speaking human." It's easy to imagine a situation where there wasn't really a good descriptor for what Wukong was to her tribe other than "Chief" or "King" or little baby Wukong not knowing the proper pronouns to a language he's not quite fluent in yet accidentally claiming herself to be King when Queen or Chieftess would be a more appropriate title. And history just... never realizes it was a translation mistake or that Wukong was actually a girl until MK becomes Wukong's successor. It could even be a situation where Wukong hid her gender when one considers the views of women at the time and the fact she spent several years in the presence of a very aggressive flirt and pervert, even if Baijie probably wouldn't have ever actually done anything just his presence done would make her uncomfortable
Just little ideas based in what you said about the story not really changing much if Wukong were female
Prev.
I can def see a situation in LMK where Wukong identifies as a girl (personal hc is genderfluid) and just... got tired of correcting people.
Younger Wukong didn't exactly have the correct word for her status amongst the troop in "Human" language so she uses "King" since it's the closest. "Queen" didn't sound right cus that meant the King's mate from what she saw.
We know that Subodhi takes on acolytes of all genders, so he had no problem with Wukong (then Shihou) wanting to learn daoist & buddhist magic. He did think Wukong was a guy at first simply cus he didn't think to ask. He did have some old-fashioned "Women = Yin. Yin is bad" views though, and that led to a few arguments between him and his most outspoken student.
No one in Heaven or the Seas bothered checking cus "Thats a Monkey". Except for whoever was in charge of electing Wukong for the stable-monkey job - that was a directed hit at her (in ancient china female monkeys were kept around horses for luck/scaring off wolves). When Sun Wukong realised that she had been given a job even below a stable-boy simply for her body and/or gender identity, she flipped out.
Being elected a Peach Orchard Maiden was a lot better, which made her even more upset that she wasn't allowed to attend the Queen's Banquet - the Orchard Maidens got to go! Why couldn't she!? The real reason turned out to be that the other Maidens were actually the Jade Emperor and Xiwangmu's daughters - a fact that's often forgotten amongst even the nobles of the Celestial Realm. The Maidens hadn't been able to explain that it was an immediate-family-only party when Wukong decided to crash it.
Bonus for Stone Matriarch au: Xiwangmu immediately recognises a startling familiar destruction in this little demon. Like she's seeing a mirror of her younger self; a wild queen destroying the Heavens to prove her worth. The Queen Mother even pauses at the sight of the chaos on Flower Fruit Mountain, thinking she's seeing one of her own daughters throwing a tantrum.
Ofc the relationship between Fem!Wukong and the Brotherhood gets altered a bit. I feel that they knew Wukong's gender and supported her 100%. DBK goes full "You looking at my little sister, punk!?"-mode on anyone that even looks at Wukong. PIF helped a lot with understanding "human girly-stuff" when Wukong joined the Celestials.
Macaque knew from day 1, and it doesn't change his level of devotion to his King - though he makes a point of referring to Wukong as the "Beautiful Monkey King". Guaranteed to leave Wukong blushing. Macaque's own gender identity is a question mark - he takes what gender he can steal from others.
It also only served to reinforce Azure's projected martyrdom onto Wukong - who would be the best figurehead for the rebellion than a woman who suffers as much pain as the Bodhisattva Guanyin?
Tripitaka likely faints once or twice at the revelation that his bodyguard is a bloodthirsty woman - but quickly gets over it cus thats the least of his worries. Tthough he does panic at the thought of Wukong being like certain other female demons towards monks -Wukong quickly puts his worries to rest; Tripitaka isn't her type.
Sha Wujing and Ao Lie didn't mind but they made sure to have Wukong's input for when she preferred to be addressed as male - usually amongst humans or celestials.
Zhu Bajie on the other hand...
It took Bajie a lot of rejection to get the point that the Monkey King was not a free lady. After a few years their relationship became a lot more "annoying siblings"-vibes, but the initial creep factor always made Wukong uncomfortable.
MK (he/they transmasc) discovers the Monkey King's true gender and *immediately* works to correct his language.
MK: "Monkey- wait, do you prefer being called King or Queen? I don't want to misgender you if possible." Wukong, surprised: "Uh, King is fine bud. It's sort of my brand now anyway." MK: "Okay! Never be afraid to correct me if I mess up." (*points to trans pride pin on his jacket*) :D Wukong, honestly touched: "Aww."
Later when the rest of the Noodle Gang meets Wukong, there's a little surprise - mostly from Tang who's rambling how all the translation inconsistencies finally make sense! Mei shrieks with glee - the Monkey King is "The Ultimate Girl Boss!". Sandy politely asks for Wukong's preferred pronouns if she's comfortable sharing them. Pigsy is a lot more understanding of why Wukong felt the need to hide her gender for so long.
Pigsy: "Let me guess, you pulled a Mulan cus of a certain... pervert in your travel party." Wukong: "Eh not entirely... Bajie figured it out after a few months, but by then he already saw me as One of the Guys. Felt weird to bathe or sleep near him though - dude stared." Pigsy: "Gross." Wukong: "Mega-gross."
Wukong's dynamic with Spider Queen becomes a bit funnier, since she likely doesn't know Wukong's gender. Second she learns that her opponent is "a fellow Queen" she gains a lot more respect for her. Female spiders are overwhelmingly the strongest after all.
If it becomes wide knowledge during LMK, then Wukong gets an intense public reaction, not just from fans (she tells Fire Star to deal with the media dumpster fire) but from demons that knew her back in the day that never knew and are surprised, or did know and are extremely proud of her for coming out.
DBK loudly declares "MY BABY SISTER HAS RETURNED!". The king he's been forced to fight felt like a complete stranger until Wukong started owning her gender identity again. He is extremely supportive to an embarassing extent. Red Son feels elated, especially since they're coming to terms with their own gender indentity.
And ofc a lot of this is me projecting as a trans masc person - I tend to automatically see Sun Wukong's as afab either way. This idea can have Wukong either as afab genderfluid or trans fem, whatever tickles the brain.

"just how permanent is your immortality? will you finally die when reality ends, or will you float in the nothing void waiting for the next reality to begin?"
Patriarch Subodhi blinked.
In all of his years of teaching, never had he received such questions from a student. The small golden monkey in front of him, not even a student of his, blinked back innocently.
He was a yaogui. He was destined for chaos and destruction. It was why Subodhi had refused his attempts at joining his class.
However, most of the other students didn't have a fierce curiosity in their eyes. They asked questions, but it was all to ensure they understood the current lesson. As far as he knew, none of them had tried to do their own research. Considering that...
"I don't know how many layers of immortality that would take, tudi," he said, watching as Shi Hou's eyes lit up. He had caught on. "My method adds hundreds of years. I have never considered doing the math on that."
"I don't know how to do math."
"...I'll teach you."

Jail Reunion
Summary:
Patriarch Subodhi has been captured by a demon. While he would be able to escape, any thoughts of escape flee when he sees who's in the cell across from him.
Notes:
This was just based on a fun fic idea I talked about in Discord, where Qi Xiaotian and Subodhi meet early, due to them and Sun Wukong being accused of a crime against a demon lord. Wukong manages to negotiate that he, his successor, and this "totally random but seemingly wise elder" will solve the mystery, leading to shenanigans.
Patriarch Subodhi was not angry at waking up in jail.
Annoyed was a better word. The cowards who had taken him did not have the courage to attempt to fight him- instead, he had gone out when rumors of a book, assumed to be lost during the scholar purges of the Qin dynasty, had turned up in a bookshop. Based on the throbbing on the back of his head, they had knocked him over the head.
Cowards.
Subodhi tested the chains wrapped around him, specifically the power-blocking cuffs around his wrists. The chains were tight, but the lock looked to be a simple one to pick. They had assumed that the cuffs would do the work. Their mistake. These kinds of cuffs focused on magic that had been present since birth. Subodhi had been born powerless, so the cuffs would have no effect-
"-I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M IN JAILLLLLL!"
Subodhi winced at the loud shriek from the cell across from his. Ever since the guard had stuffed his jailmates in there, one of the two had not stopped yelling and crying. A young man, based on his voice, if Subodhi had to guess. Once again, the older of the two started to soothe and comfort, his voice a low rumble with soft "buds" audible here and there.
"-PIGSY'S GONNA BE SO MAD- WHAT IF THE BAIL IS TOO MUCH-?!"
Bail? Subodhi scoffed. There was no bail in this prison. He suspected the demon wanted something from him and the two others. However, if the young man kept up with his wails, he would be executed.
Subodhi turned his head, preparing to say that.
Golden fur made his mouth click shut. He almost brushed it off as a hallucination, but Subodhi knew better. He wasn't concussed enough to hallucinate.
For the first time in several centuries, Subodhi was looking at Sun Wukong.
He looked older and more tired, but everyone aged. Like the first time they met, he wore simple clothing- a yellow and black hoodie and red jeans and black combat boots. His hair was left to flow wild down his back. It looked messy, as if someone had grabbed it. In front of him was a younger man, human with dark curls and big dark eyes that were welling up with tears.
All thoughts of escape fled Subodhi's mind.
He had been trying to get back in contact with his old disciple ever since the tripitaka had been brought back from the Buddha. He had been wrong about his old disciple, Subdohi could admit that. However, he could not bring himself to apologize and he had been too busy to seek him out.
Then, a century or so later, the monk had come, gathering stories of the journey, and Subodhi had seen the way. He had hoped that seeing the truth of who taught him would bring Wukong back, giving them a chance to talk.
It hadn't. Instead, Subodhi heard that Wukong had gathered as many copies of the Journey to the West as he could and destroyed them, but he could not gather all of them. His failure to do so had spread the story and not even that had brought Wukong to him. Instead, Subodhi found himself trying to arrange meetings by chance, hoping that one chance would net him a chance to corner his old disciple.
Except Wukong proved to be slippery.
This prison would not hold Wukong for long. However, here, Wukong couldn't run or jump out a window or disguise himself. If anyone asked, Subodhi was certainly not thinking of grabbing Wukong's arm and refusing to let go, but he would be lying through his teeth.
However, reason had to act first.
"Sun Wukong."
-_-
The minute his mentor's name was said, Qi Xiaotian was on the defense.
A lot of people had said Sun Wukong, and by now, Xiaotian knew that it was usually the prelude to an attack. The old man in the opposite cell looked frail and small, especially with the cartoonishly large chains wrapped around him, but Xiaotian knew better.
He looked up at Wukong, preparing his defensive speech, but the look on the monkey's face made him pause.
Wukong's eyes had gone large and wide. His mouth twitched, as if either to laugh or frown and he wasn't sure which. Then he looked away, staring at Xiaotian blankly. Then his brows furrowed together and he whirled around, mouth dropping open. The old man raised a brow and his mouth shut. He pressed his hands to his face and Xiaotian could see his eyes moving back and forth, as if he was reading something.
He opened his mouth again. "Urk," was what came out. His shoulders slumped and then he sighed, glancing at the old man like he expected something bad to happen.
The old man smiled. "Wukong," he said again, leaning forward.
The shutters promptly went up in his mentor's eyes, and Wukong whirled around at Xiaotian, smiling broadly at him. "You were saying, bud?"
"Uh..." Xiaotian craned his head to the side to see the old man's smile drop to instead look very annoyed.
Ah. He knew who this was. Tang had the same reaction whenever he bumped into his old professors, who usually had funny stories to share.
Qi Xiaotian smiled at Patriarch Subodhi right before his mentor blocked his view. "Look, bud, I know the other prisoners are really fascinating," his mentor said. "But focus on us. We got to keep our stern faces on so we can escape and save everyone else!"
"Including the old man?" He hated describing Patriarch Subodhi like that, but he just had to see-
"Including any old men that might be here!"
Subodhi groaned.
Oh boy.

Subodhi gesturing to MK: Wukong, explain this
Wukong: look Master it’s really hard to-
Subodhi: why did you not tell me I had a grandson
Wukong:… well if I had you would have spoiled him rotten
Subodhi taking out the latest video games, a mountain of stuffed toys, and a new BMX bike: your damn right I would
More canon would be...
Sun Wukong: "You gave my student an identity crisis??"
Subodhi: "Oh, don't be so upset, everyone has one."
Wukong, gesturing to glitching Qi Xiaotian: "Not like this! In fact, you lose grandpa title!"
Subodhi: "What?!"
Wukong: "You are banned from being grandpa! Forever!"

I had a thought. There's a theory floating around that S5 will be a fetch quest for the stones that Nuwa used to repair the sky, a la quest for the Samadhi rings (I hope it's not like that). But...
One of the stones is hidden in a mountain near Patriarch Subodhi's school.
Remember how Eda spent most of "Elsewhere and Elsewhen" avoiding her dad? Sun Wukong doing the same, finally getting the stone and heading for the TEA/airship, only to run into Subodhi waiting for him.
Sun Wukong, taking off his disguise he used to sneak out: "Not today, suckers- Ah!"
Subodhi, watching the sunset: "Am I too late again? Well, fly safe, tudi. Perhaps I'll catch you next time."

Macaque Gets Slapped
Okay, funny story is, I originally thought of Tang getting slapped, after watching a compilation of him. Tang can be really annoying at some parts and it wouldn't surprise me that, if he does that enough, Wukong or Subodhi might slap him. But, then I thought about it some more. Who else needs a slap? Macaque. What did he do? Up to you!
Slap!
Macaque stumbled back, blinking for a few seconds as pain erupted across his face. What...had just happened?
His cheek throbbed furiously. Over in the back, Qi Xiaotian looked horrified. Pigsy was moving forward, rolling up his sleeves, before Sandy grabbed his shoulder. Closer to him, Sun Wukong had a similar look of horror as Xiaotian did...
Oh, right.
Subodhi stood in front of him, lowering his hand.
Subodhi had slapped him. Patriarch Subodhi, Sun Wukong's first teacher, had slapped him. Why?
Good question. All Macaque could think of was that it had been a good hit. As he raised a hand to massage his throbbing cheek, he winced. It had been hard enough that he could still feel the fingers.
"I've been waiting to do that for years," Subodhi said, almost airily. He turned and walked away, turning Wukong around and walking away with him. "Now, tudi, we have much to discuss..."
Macaque blinked.
"What did I do?"

*LMK season 4 spoilers!!*
"I haven't had such a good student in a while." A pause, an eyebrow raised. "Perhaps too good even."
Sandy just chuckles.
He knew it was coming after that.
The private office of the monastery head was nice and quiet. The pour of the tea was the only break in the silence, the soft gentle trickle providing a quiet break. Sandy accepted his cup with a quiet "Thank you." before taking a sip. "This is a lovely jasmine brew."
"Thank you. It was a gift from an old student." Subodhi took a sip of his tea and paused, seeming to think. "Speaking of old students, why have you not told my old student who you are?"
"I could ask the same question," Sandy hummed. "Wukong killed the monk who wrote the Journey to the West when your name was published in it." He could remember the rage on his sworn brother's face when the book came out. Sanzang, getting on in years, had tried to calm him down. It hadn't worked. "I didn't even know Wukong had an old master, yet somehow I feel like you wanted the world to know."
Subodhi sighed. "I wanted him to know...that I wanted to speak to him again. I thought it was a reasonable idea, that Wukong would come speak to me when it was published." He didn't need to say anything after that. He could guess what happened after that. "I know now that I should have just spoken to him, but I didn't want to drag him down."
Sha Wujing sighed.
"Neither did I."
Hopefully, after all of this, they could reach out.

From Cinderella 3
Subohdi: I forbid you from taking another step down those stairs
Wukong: *looks at him, looks to the side, looks back at him*… okay *proceeds to jump out a window*
Subodhi with a tired look and Wukong thrashing under his arm: "Become a teacher, they said. GREAT BENEFITS, they said. I need a child leash."

In art school au, did Red Son’s parent ever warm up to MK or the rest of the gang like Wukong? (Since it looks like their friendship improved in the season 4 special)
Yes!
After the car crash, Red Son refused to leave Qi Xiaotian's side when he got taken to the hospital, something that touched his parents. They'd always assumed Xiaotian was just a fling, something Red would let go of eventually, but his attitude revealed the depths of their affection for each other.
When Azure assumed control of the mayor's office, DBK offered to help Wukong and Subodhi out with his own army of lawyers, especially when some rude things said about Iron Fan were leaked and considering the amount of help Tang Sanzang gave their family. He and Wukong are still working on things, but the relationship is a little warmer.

Subodhi: My son has no friends
Sanzang: "Would it help if I said I was his boyfriend?"
Subodhi, slamming the door: "Absolutely not."
Wukong, all dressed up: "Who was that?"
Subodhi: "Nobody."

A less angst take on the Subodhi thing, I recall back in high school we had a graphic novel come into the library on the Journey to the west (sadly it was only up to Wukongs sealing and we never got the rest) anyway it depicted Wukongs departure more as his teacher wasn’t so much ashamed of him, but feared the danger his future acts would bring to anything tied to him and he greatly regretted having to send away one of his best and most cherished students
I hope that's what the relationship is like in S5 (if there is a Subodhi and Wukong meet-up).

Man, zhu bajie n tang sanzang had to b up there w swk about their mischaracterization n hated in lmk fandom
I have never seen so much mishandling as i seen with those three characters 😭😭(like bro i get that the most noticeable arc that ppl retain is the white bone spirit arc bc of OSP BUT THEY DIDNT STUCK TO THAT CHARACTERISTICS IN THE LATER ARCS LIKE CMON NOW—bajie couldn’t even lie about the dragon piss medicine in a later arc, what makes yall think he’s always a fantastic liar. Theres some benefit to his lying but they also backfire. BAJIE DO END UP LIKING EVERYONE LIKE HE REFER TO SWK AS ELDER BROTHER!<- no man could ever live up to the wonder of zhu wuneng. He just sweet n he does get a fantastic arc in the novel!
Tang sanzang does have some(albeit rare moments where hes nice but his asshoole moments sometimes intertwined) where hes like “yea my disciples r greats but theyre mad ugly.” Or that he gets better at having more trust in his disciples besides zhu wuneng. Even if its followed by hella traumatizing moments that no human person would remain sane like that. <hes just barely holding on by his faith, his mission and his disciples. Not his horse bc he cant hold on to save his life but that character arc where he DIDNT FELL OFF THOO!>
Monkie Kid spoilers below
Hmmm I know about the Sun Wukong & Tang Sanzang dunking but is that happening with Zhu Bajie too? Have to say I find that a little surprising given that (if memory serves correctly) Monkie Kid did say Zhu Bajie's main fault (well besides the whole being a man-eating yaoguai thing) was being stubborn, but then lego Patriarch Subodhi said he became one of the hardest workers of the pilgrimage. I guess I was under the impression that people were more light on their criticisms and thoughts about Zhu Bajie, but maybe that's just because he doesn't seem to be a point of great interest in the lego show fandom lol.
Kind of funny story anon but I've been vicariously growing in awareness on how much Zhu Bajie is loved in China through @antidotefortheawkward's posts about the pigman. And yeah, I can see that being in large part because Xiyouji in its totality does give a very different impression of who these characters are and where they end up than a cartoony summary can provide. As a number of people on this site have noted for example, the White Bone Demon Arc can be understood in a much more complex light than "Tang Sanzang & Zhu Bajie hurt poor monkey for nothing" when placed in the context of it being more near the beginning of the journey when the pilgrims were still grating against each other a lot & it happening very soon after the whole debacle with the Ginseng fruit tree. Here after all you can see how the monk has a recent history of getting into serious trouble from the monkey lying and being quick to destruction, so he would be primed to not believe SWK, not to mention he does hesitate to use the headband against SWK more than many give him credit for here. And YEAH given all the things they go through together I am more willing to accept a Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie enemies to friends arc than that put on many another character.
Also LMAOOOOO Tang Sanzang DOES seem to have quite a few lines where he tries to comfort terrified individuals by telling them that the pilgrims are good people even with their rancid looks (ugly pilgrim rights <3). And oh dang anon you are so right about how even if Tang Sanzang is much more of a static character in comparison to SWK it's kind of a shame more attention isn't given to the series of horrifying events he goes through and what effect that would have on him so that he gets a little more depth than "weepy monk who's mean to the Monkey King & falls off his dragon horse" in the popular western imagination. But then again I can understand why the monk's trauma is largely downplayed in western cartoony retellings, given that said lighthearted cartoony retellings probably wouldn't be the best medium to even touch on stuff like human butchery, death threats, sexual assault, and the consequences thereof.

In LMK Season 4, Wukong's former training master was talking about how loyal, reliable, and trustworthy Zhu Bajie was. And from what I know, in JTTW, he was kinda an asshole to Wukong. Always getting him in trouble with Tripitaka and led to a lot of circlet punishment.
I usually don't mind changes from the book but this one stuck out to me for some reason.
What are your thoughts?
Monkie Kid spoilers below:
Hmmmm forgive me if I'm misremembering anon but I don't actually recall Patriarch Subodhi saying those things precisely..wasn't it more like his talk with Zhu Dachu was about Zhu Bajie being really stubborn about not doing his fair share on the journey but then he put in a lot of work and became one of the best and most hardworking pilgrims? I think in that regard there are a number of similarities to his actions in the og classic (as the journey goes on Zhu Bajie puts in more and more effort, even fighting alongside SWK more and more frequently). You are right in terms of Zhu Bajie's more jerkish characteristics--his laziness and his lies against SWK to goad Tang Sanzang to use the headband against the Monkey King, etc.-- wasn't mentioned though. I'd say if anything though this is another example of the writers being very mum on the details of what actually happened in their version of the journey & what happened in SWK's own past to turn him into the self-isolating failure that we love (and hate lmao). They might go into all of that in the season 4 special, but we will see.
As to how I personally feel about that, I'm not sure...as it is they've set up this clash of ideas of what the journey even was with the initial assumption being that of course the journey was good but now we've seen how the Camel Ridge brotherhood experienced the journey as an absolute evil on the world, as the pilgrims not only destroyed their own Earthly paradise but Azure Lion also hinted that the pilgrims, especially SWK, went around obliterating a lot of other yaoguai sanctuaries for no real reason than because Heaven couldn't stand any system except their own. Of course he might be working on false information. He also might be refusing to acknowledge messed up things that he and others did did and that we haven't gotten a glimpse of yet. As it is in the og classic the reason a lot of yaoguai caves were destroyed was because the kings of those caves went out of their ways to capture Tang Sanzang so they could eat him or force him into marriage, and also because they were causing a lot of chaos among humans. In the book, the Camel Ridge brotherhood was a particularly egregious example of that. But it's been made abundantly clear that Monkie Kid is veering widely from the classic, and given that they're in many ways still hammering home how untrustworthy and destructive the Monkey King was and is (I mean as others have noted even Qi Xiaotian's ink clone that's throwing his biggest & truest fears in his face kept referring to SWK as nothing but a force of chaos and destruction), I've been left uncertain as to how all of these clashing viewpoints are going to resolve themselves. Idk, maybe that's the whole point and the different characters will be forced to find a happy medium between their different perspectives/versions of the same story, but we'll see.
