11:11pm, kensington

11:03pm

With one eye on the clock and the other—

Oh, who is he kidding? Alex has both eyes on the clock as he paces anxiously.

Only, it’s after eleven already, and Henry was scheduled to be back at Kensington at ten-thirty, and Alex flew across the ocean today just to surprise his boyfriend. And he’s tired. The worst part of insomnia is that he still gets sleepy. Still gets lethargic, his eyes stingy and droopy, his body feeling like a stretched out rubber band. It would be one thing if his inability to sleep manifested in such a way that he didn’t feel like he had to sleep. But instead he gets the worst of both worlds: exhausted and unable to just fucking rest.

It’s a small comfort that Henry deals with the exact same thing.

11:06pm

Alex wasn’t even going to be in London this weekend, originally. He had exams scheduled for Monday and Henry was… informed he’d be attending three back to back events as a representative for the Crown while Philip and Martha cooed and fawned over their newborn daughter and Bea was already confirmed elsewhere. Alex doesn’t mind the crazy schedule, is excited to meet Henry’s first nibling — but he hates that Henry was pulled away from their home without so much as a cursory check to see if his schedule would allow it. And Alex especially hates that he wouldn’t have been able to attend these events if his schoolwork allowed, that he wouldn’t be able to be a calm moment in the midst of the storm for Henry.

It was that, ultimately, that had him asking his professors to take his exams early, citing a family obligation — he didn’t lie, he just… didn’t correct his teachers’ assumptions that it was a Claremont-Diaz obligation — and flying into Heathrow this evening, a good-humored Cash in tow.

Alex’s head whips around at the creak of the floor from the hallway, but he slumps down again when the noise moves on. Just the night shift patrolling the hall.

11:08pm

The thing is, Alex doesn’t ever want Henry to have to be alone. Not if he can help it. That’s what being together means for Alex — that neither of them have to be on their own if they don’t want to be. And every time Henry gets called back to London for something like this, it’s like a little more of him gets washed away, eroded by the Crown’s expectations.

So if Alex can be there, next to Henry, holding his hand, being a bulwark for him against all of the royal bullshit— 

Alex will move heaven and earth to be by his side without a second thought.

11:11pm

Alex sees the time and stops pacing. 

June had been the one to tell Alex about the eleven-eleven tradition, back in Austin, before their parents had split. June used to yell out the time and make a wish, Alex! whenever they were in the same room. And Alex had closed his eyes and wished for all sorts of things: a bike with no training wheels, extra dessert that night, no homework on Friday.

It’s been years since he made a wish, since he pushed his desires out into the universe and hoped for it to return.

But Alex is right at the ‘not-giving-a-fuck’ level of tired, the point of the night where all he wants is to coil himself around Henry. So he closes his eyes tight, and wishes.

A simple wish, but earnest.

I wish Henry were here.

And like magic, like the universe heard Alex and decided to answer, he hears Henry’s voice, bidding Shaan goodnight, on the other side of the door.

The version of our faves that we know and love from The Tea Shop on Verbena Street return, and CCF has so much respect and love for these characters that it's impossible to tell that the sequel isn't written by the original author, only with their permission. Add to that the fact that this fic adds tropes that make perfect sense in this verse, and you've got yet another fic that's worthy of becoming a classic. I'll definitely be reading this fic again soon!

Henry’s office is on the twelfth floor of a skyscraper in Canary Wharf. There’s plenty of other offices, plenty of other people, plenty of other lost souls just like him who all make their way here every single day. Day in, day out; commute to and from the building, ride up and down the elevators. Every single bloody day. The routine is, to be frank, exhausting. And that doesn’t even include the actual work of it all.

I haven’t been tagged but I do have something to share!

“I couldn’t stay.” Patrick’s voice is barely audible and full of heartache that David feels as acutely as his own. “In New York, I mean. Not after…well, everything.”

“Why?” David asks, because he’s a glutton for punishment.

Patrick studies him for a moment and David squirms uncomfortably under the attention. He’s afraid Patrick will be able to deduce what a mess he’s been over the past months, that he’ll be able to see all the invisible scars from the many mistakes and bad decisions he’s made.

But Patrick just gives him a sad smile and says, “I don’t belong there, David. I don’t fit there, not like you.”

And Patrick can’t know how that cuts into David’s fragile heart like the sharpest of knives. He can’t know that David has felt increasingly out of place in the city, can’t know that even though David has spent most of his adult life in New York, the only time he’s ever felt at home was when he was in Patrick’s arms.

Wow is it already that time again? Thanks @kiwiana-writes and @getmehighonmagic for the tags! Here's a chonky bit since I've been skipping out on Sundays.

“Oh, thank Christ,” a very familiar voice croaks brokenly, and Alex’s hand almost slips as he tries to push himself into a sitting position. Strong hands grab his arm and shoulder, holding on like he can’t decide whether to hold him still or help him. “Are you sure you should— all right, you’re up, that’s— good, good. Christ, Alex, I thought…” Alex rubs at his eyes, but the image refuses to resolve into anything that makes more sense than Henry kneeling in the rubble next to him, his eyes wide and panicked as he looks over Alex’s body for injuries. Around them, others are pulling away more of the wreckage and probably asking him questions, but it’s all background noise. “Are you ok?” Henry asks breathlessly. “I mean, you said you were, but— Are you sure you’re not injured?” Alex nods, forcing himself to look away from Henry’s concerned gaze and focus on his own body. “Yeah. I’m fine. Nothing broken. I’m good.” It’s not entirely the truth because he’s got more than a few bruises and he’s gonna be ridiculously sore later, but relatively, yeah. He’s good. He squints up at Henry. “The shot— is it usable?” Henry gapes at him for a beat, his mouth opening and closing before he finally asks, incredulously, “The shot?”

i've been suppose to not be writing right now (but i do have things i finished and need to edit) but a couple new docs got opened including a roller derby firstprince fic that is gonna be all sorts of silly i think and demanded words written for it lolz - so have some roller derby words i guess

Henry is so distracted that he doesn’t notice how close he’s skated to the edge of the track. His wheel catches on the boundary, and in an instant, he’s airborne. The world tilts violently, and then he’s sliding across the track on his stomach, the impact knocking the breath from his lungs. Pain flares briefly in his ribs, but it’s his pride that takes the real hit. “Dude, you alright?” The voice is warm, threaded with amusement, and when Henry rolls over and looks up, the new guy is standing over him. Up close, he’s even more distracting—lean and sharp-featured, with a hint of stubble framing a mouth that’s just a little too inviting. His chocolate eyes sparkle with something that might be mischief, and Henry feels his stomach do a ridiculous, traitorous flip. He looks like sin on skates, Henry thinks helplessly, sprawled on the floor like a complete idiot. For a moment, he forgets the ache in his ribs, the burn in his cheeks, and the fact that he’s making an absolute fool of himself. All he can focus on is the way the guy is looking at him, equal parts amused and intrigued.

WIP Wednesday

Hey, y'all. I am struggling. With motivation, with ideas, with passion. Writing has always been my outlet and when the outlet isn't outletting... it's pretty fucking killer, I'm not gonna lie to you. I haven't read anything in literal weeks, either. Brains! Who'd have em?

Thanks to everyone who has continued to tag me over the last few weeks, and to @thighzp for the tag tonight. I really appreciate everyone who isn't just letting me disappear into the Void of Writers Past, which is basically my biggest fear lmfao.

Anyway. I have no idea what this is yet, apart from an attempt at a birthday present for a friend that stalled out and watched her birthday sail past, but!

Henry Fox is—allegedly—a pillow princess. It’s not like Alex has first-hand knowledge. He knows what a pillow princess is, because Nora once got very drunk and waxed poetic about how they’re underappreciated and unfairly maligned by the sapphic community. He also knows who Henry Fox is, because they shared a [something] class in freshman year in which Henry was tall and blond and British and annoying, and Alex didn’t miss a single opportunity to tell him that. But that was a year ago now, and Alex has never had any reason to think about those two completely unrelated pieces of knowledge in conjunction, except that his absolute least favourite lacrosse teammate is functionally incapable of having some fucking decorum, apparently.  “I mean, I guess it makes sense.” It’s not the first time Alex has internally described Darren’s face as punchable while Darren is running his mouth in the locker room, and it almost definitely won’t be the last. “When you’ve got a face like that, you probably don’t need to learn how to be good at it, you know? Guys will be lining up around the block to give it to him even if he just lays there.” “Including you,” Alex points out, because he has chronic can’t-shut-the-fuck-up disease and no real sense of self-preservation.

Alex's eyes are hot as he blinks back tears, Henry's profile blurring and distorting. “Tu me manques, remember? You kept saying that and I kept going ‘Oh, he's so hot when he's speaking French’ like the idiot I am. But I looked it up and it's not just ‘I miss you’, is it? It’s fucking ‘you are absent from me’, like a piece of me belongs to you, a part of you that’s mine. Why would you—why the fuck would you whisper this to me so earnestly every time you think I can’t hear you, and then turn around and pull this shit? Are you embarrassed by us, by me? Is the piece of me you have not enough?” Henry stands in front of him, eyes a little distant and haunted, fingers flexing at his sides. His silence cuts Alex to the fucking core, lances through him and gets him square in his traitorous little heart. A fickle thing, love is. Will he ever be enough for someone? Alex steels himself to say the words he’s been holding back, the words that have been pushing up behind his teeth for months, making his gums ache and jaw tingle.  “I don’t want to be your dirty little secret, Henry. I deserve better. And I think you do, too. You just won’t allow yourself to see that, and it’s killing me.”

Don’t pretend you liked her for my feelings’ sake.” And well, Alex has him bang to rights. Although Henry would eat his own left foot if he actually thought Alex knew the real reason Henry disliked Angelina. (And all of Alex’s other girlfriends.)
