My daughter was born 2 weeks late. It was ridiculous, wild, inconvenient, and exactly how I needed to be thrown into motherhood. I had so much respect for myself and my little family, and yet no respect for the unexpected. How dare my body not cooperate and deliver my child on time?!
I wanted a home birth. That went out the window.
I wanted a quiet moment to welcome my child into the world with my husband. That didn’t happen.
I wanted to recover in my home. Instead my daughter and I shared a room with four other mothers and babies. It goes on and on.
And yet, my baby was beautiful and we were happy, and life went on.
It was the first time in my adult life where all I could do was respect what happened, instead of what I wanted to happen.
I eventually made it home with my baby and husband, and we began our new life together. I made wonderful portraits with my daughter strapped to my chest, hiring sweet friends to do laundry and dishes so I could do my new mom job and my established artist job. My daughter and I would look at the lovely portraits and bad portraits. I would kiss her sweet head, toss the bad portraits and begin new, better, more beautiful portraits, and respect what had happened. She would get sick, or have a rough baby week, and respect what had happened. My process became learning how to trust that things would get done, art would be made, and my baby would be loved.
Tumblr media
All of this stretched me. Growing through all of that stretching changed my perspective on life, art, and being a working mother. I now gave all of those women who couldn’t have it all, a lot more respect.
Respect for What Happens My daughter was born 2 weeks late. It was ridiculous, wild, inconvenient, and exactly how I needed to be thrown into motherhood.

Respect for Motherhood
Tumblr media
“You cannot have it all.” I told myself at the wise old age of 24. That perspective was reinforced by the women in my life, the women on tv and movies, and the women I would see power-walking past me on the canal in Scottsdale, Arizona. Many of these women lived – what looked to me to be – discontented lives that left them bored beyond belief or kept them so busy they barely had time to breathe,…

Respect for Motherhood: Part 2
Respect for Motherhood: Part 2
Tumblr media
I was pregnant with a girl – a girl I would need to guide into womanhood. Whoa. I had no doubt that I could show her she was loved. My mother, a flesh and blood human herself, had shown me that she loved me time and time again. With my mother’s example in mind, I wasn’t worried about how I would be able to love my daughter. But to be able to show her respect, for her baby/child/adolescent/adult…

Respect
Tumblr media
You’ve probably heard the old adage “don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.” It is a caution to the young and inexperienced to accept that their advisors may have been right about a thing or two. At the same time it is an acknowledgment that the bathwater will be thrown out. When I married my husband the bathwater from the previous generation was being drained from the tub and we were all…

Wedding Day
Anyone who has helped plan a wedding knows all too well the tremendous amount of time, money, and attention that can be spent creating the perfect moment surrounding the union of two people in love. But, in that moment, all of the hubbub fades to the background, and the happy couple simply stands in front of their friends and family to pronounce their commitment to one another. They call…

Pretty in Pink!
A friend of mine was recently and suddenly diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. That news is never something you are prepared to hear. Cancer is just a vague, impersonal sickness – until it touches someone familiar to you. Then it becomes real. A real threat to health, hope, and happiness. Yet it is also a call to celebrate the life of those fighting cancer and fight alongside them in whatever…
