Living Spaces for Artists: Interest Survey
Hello tumblr, my name is Arina, and I have considered for several years now creating a living space in the US for artists and creatives alike just starting out on their respective journeys. My idea was to purchase a large house and rent out rooms for incredibly cheap, so that the struggling artist would have a means to live on their own while they focus on their career. In my search for a starter house for myself, I stumbled across two properties that would help me realize this dream even sooner than I realized. However, as with all things, nothing is perfect, and there are a few caveats. The first is that both properties are in the northern United States, which means hot summers and harsh and cold winters. The second is that one is located far from metropolitan areas, and are mostly surrounded by small towns. It would not be impossible to find a regular job in these areas, but may require a commute.
Both properties are in need of renovations. There are several rooms that are structurally sound, which I would be willing to rent out in the case of emergency, but for the most part the buildings would not be available until at least mid-next year.
For both properties, I would rent the rooms out at $200/month, and yes that would include utilities. You would be allowed up to two people per room, and two pets per room. Property descriptions below the cut.
The first property is located in Wisconsin, near the Great Lakes and the Canadian border. From the looks of it, this was a caretaker home for the elderly, and as such has handicap access and multiple entrances. My idea was to rent out the top floor to residents, and then airbnb the bottom floor rooms. From what I’ve been told this area is high in tourism for outdoor activities and the like, so I may even be able to make an arrangement to have a few people have free room and board in exchange for maintaining the rooms, or cooking or cleaning up after guests. (This is a rough work in progress idea.)
As you can see, most rooms still need renovations, but several rooms can be considered move-in ready.
Has a large functional kitchen, and walk-in cooler, which would allow multiple people to use it at once, or hypothetically, sustain a semi-hotel set up.
Several bathrooms are functional and in working order, but would need to be shared. There is one bathroom for every two rooms, and I would need to decide whether to convert a couple bedrooms into bathrooms to accommodate everyone, but at the moment, consider these like dorms where you have to share bathrooms.
And that’s it for the first property! Onto the next one:
This next property is located in Chariton Iowa, about an hour south of Des Moines. Finding a job here wouldn’t be too difficult, though it would require a bit of a commute.
As far as I can tell the whole building is in need of renovations, so this wouldn’t be move-in ready until next year. I would also need to convert a couple rooms into bathrooms, because having 4 bathrooms between 15 rooms isn’t feasible for many people.
And that just about sums it up! This post is for me to see if anyone else is even interested in my idea, but if no one bites, then I will likely buy these properties to convert them into a bed and breakfast/motel type situation.
Or, if people buy these properties before me, I’ll find a smaller property to start small with my idea.
So, that being said:
If you’d like to be updated on the progress of whichever project/endeavor I end up taking, go ahead and follow this blog.
And if you can, please reblog this, or tell anyone you think might need this, so I can see if there are any interested parties. Thank you <3

Pet-Friendly Studio Apartments: Tips & Benefits
Finding the perfect home for both you and your furry friend can be an exciting yet challenging experience. If you're considering renting a pet-friendly studio apartment, you’re not alone. More and more renters are seeking out accommodations that allow pets, and for good reason. Living in a studio apartment with a pet can offer both practical and emotional benefits, but it’s important to find the right space that works for both you and your animal companion.
In this blog post, we’ll explore the benefits of living in a pet-friendly studio apartment, share tips for finding the ideal rental, and help you navigate common concerns about having pets in a small living space.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/131ce66edf13c71727e3c99d35a726f2/b37eb7bcb79f62ea-27/s540x810/09f90381f9b37009fe8749defdb289b94df2b673.webp)
Why Choose a Pet-Friendly Studio Apartment?
1. Pet Companionship in a Smaller Space
Whether you have a dog, a cat, or any other type of pet, the companionship they provide is priceless. Pets have been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve mental health. If you live alone, having a pet in a studio apartment can create a sense of comfort and reduce loneliness. For busy professionals, a pet-friendly apartment provides a space where you and your furry friend can spend quality time together after a long day.
2. Increasing Availability of Pet-Friendly Apartments
In recent years, the availability of pet-friendly apartments has been on the rise. Many landlords and property managers understand the value pets bring to their tenants’ lives and are offering more flexible policies to accommodate them. This trend has made it easier for renters to find studio apartments that allow pets, so you can enjoy the convenience of living in a well-located, pet-friendly space.
3. Convenience of Living in a Smaller Apartment
A studio apartment is typically smaller than a one-bedroom or multi-bedroom rental, which may work well for pet owners. Smaller spaces are easier to maintain, which means you can spend more time enjoying life with your pet rather than worrying about chores or cleaning. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about your pet feeling overwhelmed or lost in a large home.
Things to Consider When Looking for a Pet-Friendly Studio Apartment
1. Pet Policies: Understanding Rules and Restrictions
Before signing a lease, make sure you fully understand the pet policies. While many studios are pet-friendly, each building may have different rules regarding pets. Some landlords may limit the number or size of pets, or they may require a pet deposit or additional monthly fees. Always ask the following questions:
What is the pet deposit? A one-time deposit may be required to cover potential damages caused by your pet.
Are there breed or size restrictions? Some properties only allow smaller pets or may restrict certain breeds (particularly dogs).
Are there pet fees? Some apartments charge extra monthly fees for pets to help cover the cost of pet waste removal, common area cleaning, or noise management.
Are there amenities for pets? Look for apartments that offer pet-friendly features like a dog park, pet wash station, or walking paths.
2. Space Considerations for Your Pet
Although studio apartments are compact, many can still comfortably accommodate pets. When deciding if a particular apartment is suitable for your pet, consider the following:
Pet Size and Activity Level: Larger, more active pets may need more space to roam. A smaller pet, such as a cat or small dog, may adapt well to a studio environment, while larger dogs may require more room to stretch out and move around.
Floor Plan: Even though the apartment is small, look for one with a practical layout that leaves enough space for your pet to move around comfortably. Some studio apartments feature an open floor plan that maximizes usable space, making it easier to navigate with a pet.
Nearby Parks and Walking Areas: If you're a dog owner, proximity to green spaces, dog parks, or walking trails is essential. Your pet will need regular outdoor time, so being located near these areas can make life much more convenient.
3. Noise Control in a Pet-Friendly Studio Apartment
One of the challenges of living in a studio apartment with a pet is dealing with noise. Pets can be sensitive to sounds, and the limited walls and space in a studio apartment may amplify any noise. Whether it’s your pet barking or neighbors’ sounds disturbing your pet, soundproofing your apartment can be a game-changer.
Consider using rugs, curtains, and acoustic panels to dampen noise and create a peaceful environment for both you and your pet. Additionally, providing a quiet corner or space for your pet to retreat to can help them feel safe and secure.
Benefits of Pet-Friendly Studio Apartments
1. Improved Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being
The presence of a pet can have a significant impact on your mental health. For those living alone or working remotely, having a pet nearby can reduce feelings of isolation and depression. Pets offer unconditional love and companionship, and their presence can provide a sense of purpose and comfort in an apartment setting.
2. Convenience of Location and Community
Studio apartments are often located in desirable, central areas, making it easier for you and your pet to access local amenities, pet-friendly cafes, or parks. In addition, many apartment complexes with pet-friendly policies offer a sense of community, where you may meet other pet owners who share similar interests.
3. Savings on Pet Care Costs
When you live in a pet-friendly studio apartment, you may save money on pet care services like dog walking or pet-sitting. If your apartment is located near parks or other pet-friendly spaces, you can save time and money by taking your pet for regular walks instead of relying on expensive pet services.
Tips for Living Comfortably with Your Pet in a Studio Apartment
Create a Pet-Friendly Space: Even though your studio apartment is small, you can designate specific areas for your pet. Create a cozy corner with their bed, food, and water bowls. Having a safe space for your pet can help them feel more at home and less stressed in the smaller environment.
Regular Exercise: Even if your studio apartment is compact, it’s important to keep your pet active. Regular walks, playtime, and mental stimulation will keep your pet happy and healthy.
Keep Your Space Tidy: Small spaces can quickly feel cluttered, so keeping your apartment clean and organized will benefit both you and your pet. Use space-saving furniture and keep your pet’s toys and supplies neatly stored away.

Conclusion
Living in a pet-friendly studio apartment can offer a perfect blend of convenience, comfort, and companionship. By carefully considering the space and pet policies, you can find an apartment that suits both you and your pet’s needs. Whether you're enjoying the benefits of reduced stress, better mental health, or the joy of spending time with your furry friend, a pet-friendly studio apartment can be the ideal choice for modern pet owners. With thoughtful planning and the right resources, you can create a space that both you and your pet will love.

How Neighbors Can Help a Hoarder
youtube
Hoarding is a challenging and sensitive issue that affects not only the person suffering from it but also their neighbors and the surrounding community. If you live near someone struggling with hoarding, you may feel frustrated, concerned, or even helpless. However, there are practical and compassionate steps you can take to support your neighbor while also addressing the community's needs. In this article, we'll explore ways you can help without overstepping boundaries.

How to Approach a Neighbor Who Hoards
Resources and Professional Help
Creating a Supportive Community Environment
Conclusion
Understanding Hoarding Disorder
Before attempting to help, it’s important to understand that hoarding is a psychological disorder. People with hoarding disorder have difficulty parting with possessions, often experiencing extreme anxiety at the thought of discarding items. This behavior is usually tied to deeper emotional issues like anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Recognizing the Impact on the Community
Hoarding doesn’t just affect the individual; it can have a significant impact on neighbors and the community at large. Common issues include:
Health Hazards: Accumulated clutter can attract pests, create unsanitary conditions, and pose fire risks, potentially affecting nearby homes.
Visual Pollution: Hoarded items spilling into outdoor spaces can diminish the aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood, affecting property values and creating a negative atmosphere.
Odor and Noise Complaints: Depending on the severity of the hoarding, unpleasant odors and noise may affect nearby residents, making it uncomfortable to live close by.
While these issues can be frustrating, approaching the situation with empathy and understanding is key to offering real help.
How to Approach a Neighbor Who Hoards
Approaching a neighbor about hoarding is delicate and requires careful consideration. Here are steps to help you navigate the conversation:
1. Approach with Compassion
Your neighbor may already feel embarrassed or ashamed about their situation, so it's crucial to approach them with kindness. Avoid using judgmental language or blaming them for the issues caused by their hoarding.
Example: Instead of saying, "Your yard is a mess," try, "I’ve noticed you have a lot on your plate. Is there anything I can do to help?"
2. Choose the Right Time
Timing is important. It’s best to talk to your neighbor when they seem calm and approachable, rather than in the middle of a conflict or a stressful moment.
3. Offer Help, Don’t Demand It
Hoarders may feel overwhelmed by the idea of cleaning up or making changes. Offer to help them gradually, such as helping with small tasks or connecting them with professional help.
Example: "Would you like some help sorting through items in your yard this weekend? We could start with just a small area."
4. Be Patient and Respect Boundaries
Recovery from hoarding is often slow. Your neighbor may not accept help right away or may decline altogether. Respect their boundaries while gently encouraging them to take small steps.
Resources and Professional Help
Hoarding is a disorder that usually requires professional intervention. Here’s how you can help connect your neighbor to resources:
1. Encourage Mental Health Support
Hoarding is often a symptom of underlying mental health conditions. Encourage your neighbor to seek professional therapy or counseling. Many therapists specialize in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which has been shown to help hoarders.
Provide Information: Share resources like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) or local mental health services.
2. Suggest Professional Cleaning Services
In cases where the hoarding has led to unsanitary or unsafe conditions, suggest hiring professional cleaning services that specialize in hoarding situations. These services are experienced in handling extreme clutter and can work at the client’s pace, ensuring a respectful approach.
3. Contact Local Authorities (If Necessary)
If the hoarding situation is extreme and poses a serious health or safety risk, it may be necessary to contact local authorities, such as health departments or fire safety inspectors. However, this should be a last resort after attempts to resolve the situation peacefully.
Creating a Supportive Community Environment
Neighbors and the broader community can play a significant role in helping a hoarder recover. Building a supportive environment can make a big difference. Here are ways to foster that environment:
1. Organize Community Clean-Up Days
Sometimes, hoarding spills out into public spaces, such as sidewalks or common areas. Organizing a community clean-up day can help address these issues without singling out the individual hoarder. It also fosters a sense of community support and cooperation.
2. Establish a Neighborhood Watch or Support Group
A neighborhood watch or community group can help monitor the situation and provide a platform for discussing concerns. This can also serve as a way to gently encourage the hoarder to seek help without making them feel targeted.
3. Create an Open Dialogue
Encouraging open communication between neighbors can reduce tension and frustration. If multiple people are concerned about the hoarding issue, it’s better to address it calmly and collectively rather than letting resentment build.
Conclusion
Helping a neighbor who struggles with hoarding requires patience, empathy, and practical support. By approaching the situation with compassion, offering assistance, and connecting them with the right resources, you can make a positive impact on their life and the community. Remember, hoarding is a mental health issue, and addressing it requires understanding and persistence. Working together as a community can help create a safer, healthier, and more harmonious living environment for everyone.

Starting a Construction Business | sweeneyslandscaping.com.au
Building homes, offices and schools is a timeless skill. But starting a construction business isn’t easy and the majority of companies fail within their first five years.
Conduct research to understand your local market and identify a niche that will set you apart. Focus on a specific area of the industry to hone your skills and increase profitability.
Location
Depending on your expertise, you can focus on a specific skill set and develop a landscaping business around that. For example, if you are skilled with carpentry, you can start a
general repair service. Alternatively, you can be a general contractor and build new construction.
You'll need to consider the legal structure of your company. A sole proprietorship is the simplest option, offering total control and personal liability. A partnership offers more structure with shared responsibilities and resources but no liability protection. A Limited Liability Company is a popular choice for contractors because it provides liability protection while offering the flexibility of a partnership.
Effective financial management is critical for a successful construction company. This involves keeping detailed records of overhead and profits, as well as anticipating costs for inflation. Additionally, it is important to stay available to clients and provide them with updates throughout the process. This will help build trust and win future referrals.
Licenses and Permits
The type of license you need depends on what work you plan to do. For example, some states require contractors to hold a general contractor license or a specialty contractor license.
It is also common for licensing requirements to vary at the county and city levels. It’s important to understand and comply with all state, local and industry licensing requirements before you start working.
You will also need to register your business and obtain any necessary permits needed to operate your construction company. Depending on your business structure, you may also need workers’ compensation insurance and to be bonded.
Consider consulting with legal and financial advisors to ensure your construction business is set up correctly from a compliance perspective. These experts can help you register your business, determine which taxation structures best suit your needs and make sure you are fully compliant with all relevant laws and regulations. They can also provide guidance on how to recruit, hire and retain a skilled and reliable workforce.
Insurance
A construction business needs plenty of insurance to cover liability, property and employees. Typically, small contractors who don’t have many employees may qualify for a business owners policy (BOP).
A BOP offers a low cost and a bundle of coverages including general liability, commercial auto and property. If a contractor has a lot of hand tools or equipment that is often in transit, a specialty policy called inland marine insurance should be considered.
Contractors should also get workers’ compensation insurance for employee injuries. Additionally, if the contractor’s work causes pollution or errors, they may need professional liability insurance. Those who need more specific and complex policies should consider talking with an agent that has experience insuring construction businesses. This helps ensure the proper policies are designed and purchased. This can save the company money and potentially allow them to qualify for discounts they might not have otherwise received. Some insurers can even offer multi-policy discounts to save on premiums.
Equipment
Depending on the type of outdoor living construction work you plan to do, you will need a variety of equipment to complete your projects. Whether you will purchase or rent your equipment depends on the costs, maintenance requirements and your financial capacity.
Incorporating your business establishes it as a separate entity, reducing the risk of you being held personally liable for the company's debts. Taking this step also prevents you from having to use your personal property as collateral for business loans.
Be sure to research the local area and demographics to understand who your target market is. This information will help you determine the best marketing and sales strategy for your construction business. In addition, it will provide a realistic picture of the demand for your services and the price ranges you should charge to be competitive. It is also a good idea to maintain thorough records of your business activities, so you can keep track of the growth of your company and its profitability.

@iha-etscho0l genuinely, @vaspider is entirely correct that your six year old outdoor cat has undoubtedly been less fine than you realize, and as you clearly at least partly know and acknowledge, it is entirely luck that nothing truly awful has happened to your cat yet.
the "yet" is key and inescapable. I had a glance at your blog and saw that you feel this intensity about keeping cats indoors and only outdoors for short, supervised excursions is not caution but paranoia.
as the old saying goes, it isn't paranoia if they really are out to get you.
i'm not exactly holding out hope of convincing you, but my stories in this post are not unique. as a quick scroll through the notes will plainly demonstrate, it's in fact the opposite.
i'm not rattling chains and shouting into bullhorns about maybes and hypotheticals. what i've shared here is what i've seen and experienced, personally, directly, and with painful, scarring intimacy.
i was light on certain details in my original post because it hurts to recount, was traumatizing to experience, and can be traumatizing just to read about. but just to try to relate to you that the danger is real, and imminent, and almost inescapable for outdoor cats, even yours, i'll go into some specifics.
(this will be difficult to read and some descriptions will be graphic. scroll by if you're not up for that right now):
one of the first times i went outside to find the carport and driveway dotted with kitten corpses thanks to one of the local packs of wild and half-feral dogs, almost every one of the kittens died, their bodies shaken and broken and loose-limbed where they hadn't already gone stiff, fur matted from the mouths of the dogs and spotted with blood, on bodies that fit in one or two of my hands. the dogs weren't hungry, it was sport. they rolled in, chased the kittens and caught them up in their teeth, violently shook them to death, dropped them and moved on.
every single one of the kittens i wanted to call mine, take away with me and make an indoor cat when i could move out on my own again, every one of them died first. including shadow, who died in the incident above, and princess, who got old enough to be spayed and close to a year in age and just... vanished. but because we'd had large birds of prey circling in the few days before, we do know what happened to her. she was a survivor of another shaken-to-death batch, one i'd actually managed to find tiny and terrified in the bushes at the edge of the property. i roamed the property and nearby area for almost three weeks, calling for her, heartbroken, hoping maybe, maybe i'd get lucky somehow one more time and find her again, safe, but afraid.
it's probably for the best i never found princess, considering how i found simon, one of her cousins and agemates. he vanished in the shaking-death incident princess survived... only i found him more than a week later, and the dogs hadn't just shaken him to death. [warning: graphic] i found him behind a bush far closer than i would've imagined. found the half of him left, anyways. he looked almost pristine from the ribcage up. only, there was nothing below, and i remain scarred and on the verge of panic and being sick every single time i remember how i turned my head, and finally found him--at exactly the right angle to see directly into his perfectly intact but empty ribcage. i am trembling and holding back tears typing this now, and it's been more than 10 years.
there was ninja, the tiny black kitten who didn't live nearly long enough, because he was snake bitten only a day before my folks were scheduled for a trip away. which meant i was alone with him, desperately trying to comfort him in a little cardboard box inside the house, hoping against hope he'd somehow get better. but of course he didn't. i kept the little box he was in by my bed and in the scant hours i slept, he died.
another kitten who died so, so small... i can't even remember her name now. she was a pretty little fluffy tortie, and we named her something elegant, refined. she died in my lap, wrapped in a towel, as i tried to get her to take a little water from a dropper, overwhelmed by the respiratory infection that ravaged her and took out a third of her littermates too.
there was the sweetest little boy kitten, we hurt too much by then to name him, but he was so fluffy and soft and the color of a toasted marshmallow. he was affectionate and playful and so very friendly. a survivor of another attack by another pack of dogs or coyotes. this was a lot closer to the end, and we kept the garage door up about six inches to let the current kittens and their mama shelter in there in case of danger. my mother was especially "paranoid" with the kittens in the garage that they'd get up in the undercarriage or wheel wells of the car or van, and we always carefully accounted for every one of them before we left, to avoid tragedy. only, i was sick that day, and it was early, and they were late for church. every other one of them was accounted for, and mom checked every bit of the vehicle she could get any kind of view on so thoroughly, called for the "babies" in that high-pitched tone that always brought them running, and the little marshmallow boy never turned up. they were running quite late by then, but my mom, still so worried, stood out at the edge of the carport to watch as her husband rolled very slowly out of the garage--just in case, just in case. and it happened so fast. the car inched forward, and that little marshmallow of a kitten tumbled out of the wheel well right in front--and went immediately under the tire. crushed to death as my mother stared in horror. she could hardly speak the rest of the day.
you have been lucky. you have been so lucky none of these things has happened yet to your cat, that you've not been out in the dark, voice run ragged calling for her and getting no answer, no sign of her, for hours, days, weeks. so lucky she hasn't come home with a sudden, unexpected infection and rapidly declined, sick and weak and spinning circles and unable to control her bladder, pus oozing out of an ear and smelling unbelievably foul as you hold her wrapped in a towel on the way to the vet so she can go gently to sleep and not hurt anymore.
(that happened to me, too. tux, a black and white boy so big and tough, one of three that survived to adulthood, one who'd survived all the dogs and other predators, who survived a nasty spiderbite that left a pit in his face. the smell lingers in my memory.)
i genuinely, truly hope none of this ever happens to your cat. i really, really do, but the odds are not in her favor and are in fact stacked deeply against her.
the one (ONE) cat who survived those years of trauma (one of the mamas, mean for years until we finally caught and spayed her) has been an outdoor cat and survived more than ten years, learning to love my mother and trust her and enjoy what comforts can be provided. and she's still lived with terror and pain and sickness, every bit of which wouldn't have happened to her as an indoor cat. that cat is made of fear, "paranoia" except the kind that is horribly well-founded. she is so sweet, and so constantly afraid of everything, because she has to be to keep living.
i still am not really holding my breath that any of this will convince you, if you do even read it. but i hope if nothing else, my words and what i've been through stay with you, and you think on them, think on them hard, and make a careful, considered decision about what's best for your cat, what will give her the better, happier, healthier, safer, and longer life, without all the fear and horror and pain and illness.
i certainly can't predict even then what decision you'd make. i obviously have an outcome i'd hope for, but even with a long and measured think on it, you may never change your mind. all i can possibly ask is you hear what i and so many others have seen, heard, experienced, and witnessed, and you give it some weight and some time to think.
i truly wish your girl the best of luck. for every day she roams outdoors, she will need it.
i'll tell you what converted me to being all-in on keeping cats indoors only:
living for a year and a half in a rural area with a sudden feral cat colony explosion on the property.
i moved in with my folks for a bit and at that time, one (1) stray cat mama had taken up residence on the property, but was too feral to let my mother anywhere near her. but especially after she brought three kittens around, mom fed her and the kittens in hopes they'd grow trusting enough she could catch for spay and neuter at the minimum. momcat stayed mean and hella wary, but the kittens would hang around a little nearer and play with my mom via long stick, but still wouldn't come close enough to touch or catch.
unfortunately, two of the three kittens were girls and started having kittens of their own before further progress was made, shortly after i moved in. and that was pretty much instant doom.
there were so many kittens. SO MANY. multiple litters. every time we turned around, more kittens.
we fed them. we hunted for and located the kittens every time anywhere on the property and would move them to a repurposed doghouse anytime a mama cat had them somewhere else, so that they could grow up human-socialized and we could spay/neuter them when they were old enough. (also it was a handy tactic to push the issue of the mamas getting more used to/trusting of us themselves. only really worked with one of them, though.)
and we watched them die.
we watched litter after litter of kittens never make it to the age they could be spayed or neutered. the moms stayed, for the longest time, too skittish to more than briefly touch, much less catch and crate for a vet visit.
it sounds like a silly joke to say i have kitten-related ptsd, but i absolutely do.
too many goddamn times i'd walk out of the garage and find the carport and gravel drive strewn with tiny bodies. others simply went missing, never to be found.
one in particular, i wish i hadn't found, and the visual literally haunts me still, almost a decade later.
i saw so many kittens die of snake bite, spider bite, wild dogs, birds of prey, hit by cars, respiratory illness, covered in fleas and eyes crusted with infection.
and we loved them all. scrimped for antibiotics if the vet could be convinced to give it to us despite our being unable to bring them in. bought flea collars and ointments. we cared for them and fed them and petted them and played with them, brushed their fur and cleaned up their little faces, put ice in their water in hot summer, rigged a heating lamp in their house in the winter.
and they died. horribly. that property is pocked with unmarked graves of kittens and cats.
all the best intentions, not enough resources, and it didn't matter anyways because the population went from three to almost twenty (at times, over thirty) in the blink of an eye.
they died and died and died. our hearts broke over and over again. the stress and anxiety wore us down like sandpaper. i think, by the end of it all, we managed to find less than 10 of them all homes, including batman the disabled kitten i found a home across the country through tumblr.
it was carnage and tragedy, frankly. and we were helpless.
it only ended because they started dying faster than they could be born, and because we finally caught the two remaining mom cats in traps and got them spayed.
the points about outdoor cats being invasive predators devastating to local wildlife populations is true and valid and important.
but i know cat people, and cat people who don't know better than to let cats outdoors. what matters to you is the cat itself, generally. the cat being happy and taken care of.
keeping cats outdoors, letting them outdoors, is not taking care of the cats. it's not protecting them. it's not giving them any happiness or invigoration that couldn't be provided to them as indoor-only pets with just a little research and effort.
they die. they get ill. they get hurt. they're at risk of predators, and cars, and disease, and carelessly cruel children and deliberately cruel adults. they're at risk of disappearing on you because someone else saw a cat outdoors and intervened to give it a better, safer life not in conflict with the local environment.
and if that offends and angers you that someone would just take a cat they saw roaming outdoors, even collared, and that it sounds like i'm endorsing that, i am, but not if you intervene and be that person yourself for your own cat.
if what matters to you is doing right by your cat because it's family and a living creature whose happiness and health and safety is important to you,
keep them indoors. not part time. always. exclusively.

Redesigning Existing Homes to Meet Your Dreams
To refresh and modernize their dwellings, many people are turning to house improvements. The appeal of meticulously transforming a property into a dream home through home improvements, be they small or large, is hard to deny. In this post, we'll dig into the subject of house renovations and look at the many ways in which we can improve our living situations by taking on such projects.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2cfd07d7b2bee984ad6cea4b658caae2/34f3807a19090639-0d/s540x810/a66eaa92be6419ba1b094be24379a8502a2e3d8f.jpg)
The Influence of Remodeling on a House
Home renovations are a great chance to update your living space to reflect your current aesthetic and practical preferences in a world where both are always changing. A home's comfort, aesthetic appeal, and resale value can all benefit from a well-executed restoration. You may make your home exactly what you want it to be through a renovation project, whether that's to make it larger, more modern, more energy efficient, or more you.
Reasons to Remodel Your House
One of the greatest benefits of home renovations is the opportunity to make changes that reflect your own tastes and preferences. Remodeling projects are a great opportunity to put one's personal stamp on a space by adding personalized touches or exploring a new design direction.
Renovating your home is a great way to increase its resale value and improve your quality of life in the long run. If you want to get the most out of your home's sale price, invest in upgrades to high-traffic areas like the kitchen, bathrooms, and outdoor areas.
Better Usability: As time passes, you may find that your home's design and amenities no longer suit your needs. Redesigning your home to suit your current and future requirements can make your living area more comfortable and convenient.
Renovations to make homes more energy efficient are becoming increasingly popular as people try to reduce their carbon footprints in the face of rising environmental awareness. Reducing utility costs and carbon emissions can be achieved by measures like as insulation upgrades, the installation of energy-efficient appliances, and the incorporation of solar panels.
Important Factors to Think About When Remodeling Your Home
Before beginning a home renovations project, it's important to think about all the aspects that can affect it. The renovation project will be more productive and enjoyable if these factors are taken into account.
Set Out Your Objectives
Your first step in a successful makeover is to establish what it is you hope to achieve. Do you want to update an old kitchen, design a relaxing bathroom oasis, or build an entirely new space? Having a clear idea of what you want to accomplish before beginning a remodeling is crucial.
Create a Practical Financial Plan
Costs associated with renovations can range greatly, making it essential to establish a sensible spending cap. Think on the whole job, from start to finish, not just the parts you can see. A reserve should be established in case any unforeseen difficulties arise.
Third, Work with Qualified Experts
Having the appropriate experts on your side may make or break a home improvement job. Make sure the architects, interior designers, contractors, or team you put together has done good work in the past and shares your vision.
Fourthly, High-Quality Components and Construction
Cutting costs on supplies and labor could end up being a bad decision. Spend your money on high-quality supplies that will last and serve their intended purpose. Skilled labor is essential to the success of your renovation project.
Fifth, Acquire All Necessary Licenses
Permits from the relevant authorities may be required, depending on the nature and scale of your project. Delays, fines, or even having to undo finished work may come from neglecting to get the necessary licenses. It is recommended that you seek the advice of experts before beginning the permit application procedure.
Sixth, think about the future
Incorporating eco-friendly components into your makeover can be rewarding as the importance of sustainability grows. The use of recycled materials and the selection of energy-efficient fixtures are just two examples of how even the smallest actions may help create a greener house and a healthier planet.
Changes in Home Improvement Styles
Renovations are a dynamic industry because they reflect shifting values, aesthetic preferences, and technology developments. Some major developments in home improvement methodology include:
1. Wide-Open Floor Plans
The popularity of open floor plans shows no signs of slowing down. These designs get rid of unnecessary walls to improve traffic flow and make better use of available area. Kitchens that are open to the living and dining areas are becoming popular because they encourage interaction amongst family members.
2. Connected Home Systems
How we use and experience our homes has been completely transformed by the introduction of smart home technology. Smart thermostats, lighting systems, security cameras, and voice-activated assistants are just some of the technologies homeowners are installing to make their homes more comfortable and efficient.
3. Eco-Friendly Components
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6bca9cb55946ca5217dc3fa3b9c591dd/34f3807a19090639-f7/s540x810/5142244b439ce43d19be1bfbd754672b63015392.webp)
Renovations today are driven by a focus on sustainability. Natural stone, recycled glass, and repurposed wood are all popular choices among homeowners. These selections help make the house more eco-friendly and have a distinct aesthetic value.
4. Palettes of Subdued Colors
The timeless quality and adaptability of neutral color palettes are driving their rise in popularity. A warm and welcoming ambiance is achieved by using earthy tones and muted colors. Then the homeowners can add splashes of color with various furnishings and decor.
5. Areas with Multiple Purposes
It's becoming increasingly important to have rooms that may serve several purposes due to the evolving nature of work and daily living. This trend is exemplified by home offices that can be converted into guest bedrooms or living rooms that can be used for home workouts.
Accept the Change that Is Happening
Remodeling your house is a fantastic way to give your living quarters a facelift. With forethought, the assistance of competent professionals, and a focused vision, you may make your current home into the one of your dreams. Undertaking a renovation project, whether for aesthetic, practical, or green reasons, may be a really satisfying experience. So, decide what you want to accomplish with your renovations, establish a financial plan, and let your creativity lead the way to the house of your dreams. Keep in mind that all it takes is a little bit of work to turn your house into the home of your dreams.

Where Do I Start?
What a fabulous birthday weekend! My family, my friends, the fun, even the weather! I don’t know where to start. I feel truly celebrated and after 59 trips around the sun, that’s a mighty good feeling. To every person who offered up a message, a card, or a call - thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’m always a little overwhelmed at the amount of kindness directed toward me, I’m not worthy! So before I boohoo over all of the love, let’s talk about the weather! It. was. gorgeous. Like, windows-in-my-craft-room-open-and-Vivaldi-filling-the-house-with-sounds-of-Autumn gorgeous.
youtube
That alone was enough to put a dreamy smile on my face, but there were delightful surprises ahead - too many to name! I will, however, share some of the fun...
The mister made an appointment for us on Saturday to visit Work Horse Farm. It’s a family business about ten minutes from us that rescues animals. They have everything from camels to sloths, zebras to kangaroos, chickens to porcupines...you get the idea. Best of all, you can feed and pet ALL of them! I know I’m a grandma, but the child in me was THRILLED. I cuddled a sloth, fed and stroked a capybara, petted kangaroos (ohmygosh, the softest, most velvety fur ever), bonded with a camel named Henry, and so much more. I admit, there was a part of me wondering if there’d be a creepy Tiger King vibe and if I’d regret going - but there wasn’t! It’s truly a family devoted to caring for rescues and educating folks about both exotic and domestic animals. That’s why they’re not open to the public but they’ll take appointments and form a small tour, they also let school groups visit. The animals were obviously healthy and happy, and not afraid to ask for a snack. When you’re giving a capybara a snack and a wallaby sneaks up behind you, you know you’re having a great day. There was even a big Canadian goose who has joined their flock of domestic geese and refuses to leave. His family still spends part of their year at a pond on the property, but when they migrate I guess he just waves as they fly over. Here’s a shot of the emus and camels coming to check out the visitors.

I never knew how much I wanted a camel until I nuzzled noses with this one.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1b700fed8bacf43546857859dee2ed07/37e4048e3c1b6f25-8e/s540x810/53a77b9a85f317ad5b08578eda4991821859c914.jpg)
And look at these gorgeous babies!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3fd94009d4ac7c7b3af2715ba4d7fb14/37e4048e3c1b6f25-ff/s540x810/ab947926f38fc76afddceb3a276f8b3bc8a1eb50.jpg)
Our group had around eight people in it and we were all so excited to have a chance to feed and touch these beautiful animals. I mean, look at this little kangaroo enjoying a belly scratch!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/215b7a07b8caf51925478e5512008e4f/37e4048e3c1b6f25-34/s540x810/de90d877d13536e0a2c5c247cfad51cb4acf9523.jpg)
I was especially eager to meet the sloth (my spirit animal) and he didn’t disappoint. He’s in his own little house now that temps have cooled off. The owner said he needs to be in an environment 80 degrees or warmer to be comfortable. So we were allowed to enter his house and pet him. The only warning was to “keep your fingers away from his mouth”, which I had no problem doing. Mickey apparently forgot that rule and stroked the sloth’s cheek, causing the sloth to slowwwwwwwwwly turn his head and slowwwwwwly open his mouth. No danger of being snapped at by a sloth.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/555e6442c9f7fafdf4ca9ea3c827e2a1/37e4048e3c1b6f25-06/s540x810/b5120535f343422f7c2b08dd98592fadbb064808.jpg)
I commented that I’d expected the hair to be coarse, but he was silky soft. The owner replied that in the wild his hair probably would be more coarse but he’s quite pampered at their place. His outdoor area was lovely - loads of trees, hammocks, food stations, etc. I wondered if he’s lonely for other sloths but apparently they live quite solitary lives. Besides, he’s surrounded by other animals just like he’d be in the canopy of a tropical forest. Okay, okay - I could fill this blog with photos of the fun we had at Work Horse Farm, but I’ll just stick their website here and let you see more if you choose.
https://work-horse-farm-rescue-and-exotics.business.site/ After waving goodbye to my new love, Henry the camel, we drove down the road to Easton where I picked out a fancy schmancy new light fixture for my feminine artsy-craftsy room. Behold!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d692d9b3ce91e9b4c39a11573bc92f74/37e4048e3c1b6f25-21/s400x600/97bc79117313d5af610ce337aa3000cc55b983bd.jpg)
Isn’t she sparkly and pretty? That bit of fabulous was courtesy of Matt’s gift card. And as if that wasn’t enough, as we were leaving I spotted YEWS! I have a long love affair with yews. They delight me. They grow nicely, they stay healthy, they don’t have ouchy spikes like hollies and other shrubs, and they’re pleasing all year, every season. That was my wish for greenery along the front porch but I hadn’t been able to find any all summer. Lo and behold, the birthday gods put them in my path - a gift from the universe. And now I have three dark green spreading yews. Perfect timing because two of the super cheap Japanese Hollies that I bought at the Denton Walmart in May are on life support. Go figure. WAIT! I didn’t mention that before we went to Work Horse Farm we made a quick stop at Ball Greenhouses - another place just a few miles from our front door. I found the kale, pansies, mini mums, and little pumpkins I needed for my porch containers. They even had bundles of cornstalks for just $4! So that was a carload of happy. You can see the joy all over his face.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b5e0fc4f9f9407fe818b2fcba67ad3c7/37e4048e3c1b6f25-01/s540x810/132ffffbee214c363c17e0c733cbe71f0b018e47.jpg)
Anyywayyyy - on the way home from Easton we decided to just pick up Chinese food for dinner which didn’t hurt my feelings one bit. I didn’t cook or clean the whole day. It was pure fun. And that wasn’t even my birthday! Late, late that night, actually the wee hours of my birthday, I woke to the sound of rain on the roof. Another birthday wish granted. On Sunday Mickey woke me up with a delicious breakfast sandwich from Earth Tones Cafe. A veggie and egg sandwich (thick slabs of perfect avocado!) of their house-made sourdough bread. Good morning! I’d already told him that I didn’t want him to hang around if he had photos to take. He’s doing a lot of that for the county and it seems like every weekend there’s another festival, hoedown, bazaar, concert, or something. He said he might run off to snap a few things, which he did, so I got my ducks in a row. I knew I’d put him to work when he came home because he’d promised to help me put up outdoor fall decor and he wanted to go out for a birthday dinner but I wanted to stay home and just grill something. That means he’d be manning the grill. Poor fella, bet this weekend wore him out. My choice of birthday meal was chicken-spinach-feta burgers on whole grain buns. He came through and they were delicious. YUM. Anyway, I’d spent a couple of days earlier in the week putting together a fall garland to put over the front door. As usual I tried to do it as cheaply as possible and that was probably a mistake. I bought a bunch of inexpensive floral stems and decided to wing it. It turned out fine, but my sister was getting messages like this.

I had flowers and wire spread out, trying to make sense of it all.

It did get finished, I was happy with it, and you-know-who ended up on a ladder attaching it to the door frame.

It’s looking like fall, y’all! Try to imagine how happy all of this made me. If this is what turning 59 feels like, I don’t mind it one bit. But my sweet guys had more in store. I will not tick off a list of gifts because that feels tacky. I do, however, want to share something that the Pullen men pulled together and surprised me with...
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9a432ca9184d52b85424844e18d9edf8/37e4048e3c1b6f25-92/s540x810/5f9f0e9583bade4bf6e0db9058c7bb2489809d32.jpg)
Pardon my crooked pic, but LOOK!!!! Those are the Royal Stafford Haunted House dishes that I mooned over! I would never, ever have asked for or expected a set! I was perfectly content to have my little witch bowl for my veggies eggs every morning. I truly was. I hope they don’t think I’m going to save these and use them just once a year - the 31st of every month will be a fine time to use them, as well as the entire period between my birthday and November 1st. And maybe every other day of the year. They’re so stinkin’ perfect! What a perfect blend of my dish fetish and my unhealthy obsession with Halloween. Check out the windows on the dinner plate.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cc9dffb240133ef228980a726ac1dc44/37e4048e3c1b6f25-b8/s540x810/a45ea26d4bb7124907d231163c106c9c73f14ffb.jpg)
And I’ve already shared the delightful bowl pattern, here’s the salad/sandwich plate - it’s the same pattern!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3490f435b43496b46fdb7f07de1779e3/37e4048e3c1b6f25-6f/s540x810/db673906fd598f56dc281b48e2e0570e0a7b8f94.jpg)
Is it weird to just want to gaze at dishes and sigh? I know it is, I just don’t care. There was FaceTiming, phone calls, cake, more gifts, and lots and lots of laughter. I feel more celebrated and loved than I have a right to, honestly. I always feel so undeserving on my birthday - the people I love really do make me feel special. Wait until you see what my sister made, it deserves its own post. I don’t deserve any of it and I’m choked up just thinking about how very, very grateful I am. How on Earth did I get so lucky? How did all of these wonderful people end up in my little life? I can’t explain it but I will be forever thankful. Now I think I’ll go have a good cry over it. Every card, every message, every gift was hugged to my heart. The Pullen men spoil me and I hope that’s because they know that they’re my whole life. The beat of my heart. And that’s what 59 trips around the sun will do to you, turn you to mush. I’m going to pull myself together and get some dinner on the table for Mickey. Tomorrow I’ll snap some photos of our pretty fall porch and share them here. There’s still a bit left to do, but it’s coming together. I’m in full autumn mode - I’m ready for chowders and gingersnaps. Sweaters! Socks! Flannel nightgowns! Bring it on! Thank you for slogging through this post as words ping-ponged in my brain and fell out onto the keyboard. I know it’s a mess. At least it’s a cheerful mess. Sending out some pumpkin-spiced love today! Stay safe, stay well.

If He Was Your Fan, Chapter 56: A Perfect Day, Henry POV (A Henry Cavill Fan Fic)
Chapter 56: A Perfect Day (Henry POV)
I open my eyes.
Were we so tired last night? We both fell asleep in each other’s arms, which was nice, but we just fell out. I didn’t think we were that tired but this was the first time we’d really relaxed in some time. There was nothing scheduled in the near future. There were no deadlines. The relief must have taken us down.
My ears hear food cooking and I inhale deeply. I smell steak….steak and eggs! With…uh…biscuits..and coffee? YES!
“Babe?” I call out to her, a question in my voice.
“Hey, hon, it’s ready!”
I roll out of bed and am greeted by Kal, who is being his puppy version of adorable.
“Alright, ol’ boy, you’ll get scraps,” I whisper down to him as he weighs my feet down. He pops up like a daisy and I head to the dining area just as she is coming out of the kitchen. “She’s corrupted you.”
“What?” she asks with a raise of an eyebrow. “Who’s corrupted who?”
“Ah, nothing,” I shrug, seeing breakfast.
“Oh, because I thought you might be talking about how Luna gets smoked salmon for no reason,” she teases. “she’s definitely corrupted you, babe.”
“Wow, love, this is…great,” I smile down at it as she brings juice, coffee and water. “Where’s yours?”
“I’ll get it.”
“I’ll wait.”
Her eyes widen and she goes and gets her plate as well…after cooking her eggs. I was not going to sit and eat without her after she cooked everything. This was something I was going to keep in mind always. She wasn’t a waitress or cook, she was my…going to be…someday would be…had to be…
“Henry?”
“Huh?”
“You alright?”
“Yeah,” I said quickly. “yeah, just…” She sits down next to me, frowning and watching me. “waiting on you, babe.” I look down. “Hold it!”
“What?”
“That is not what is on my plate.”
“Uh, yeah.”
“I want some of that!”
“Oh, you just want it because—”
“You have it? You bet!”
She rolls her eyes, shaking her head and nodding. “Okay, then but you need to share.”
“Deal.”
After we shared our breakfasts, we packed backpacks and drove to Balmoral Estate. As soon as we got out of the truck, she gasped.
“Oh, my God,” she whispers. “is that a—”
“Pyramid?” I finish. “Yes.” I got out of the car and pulled our bags.
“We’re going to hike here?” she asks, eyes wide.
“This is Balmoral Castle—” I pointed off in the distance. “and Estate. There are cairns, pyramid like monuments, all over the property, but Queen Victoria had a pyramid build memory of her husband Prince Albert over a hundred and fifty years ago. Come on.”
I was a bit surprised to find people on the trail, but it is an outdoor activity. We saw many people on the way, and as usual, selfies here and there. The good thing is that the estate is so big, we really can’t be located. It was a bit of a hike, and we shared snacks of cheese and fruit and water on the way, but we made it.
youtube
“This is so…wow.”
“Queen Victoria loved her husband Prince Albert very much, and he became ill,” I told her. “He said as long as his family was well cared for, he could die the next day, but Victoria said if he died, it would kill her, and so he fought the illness to the end. She had this built and grieved for decades after.”
“She loved him like that, so much?” she whispers.
“Yes, he was a part of her, she couldn’t bear the idea of his leaving, even in something as unavoidable as death.” I swallowed hard, looking at her. Who would lightsaber duel with me? Who goes and does ‘her thing’ when I play Warcraft? When would I have ever found out what a blasted Dagwood is? “He died in his forties, relatively young. We saw some of their cairns, or memorials, on the way here.”
“I thought cairns were dogs.”
I chuckled at that. “The breed was known for chasing small quarry between the cairns, they were small and mobile enough to manuver.” I put my arm around her. “Cairn terriers.”
“Oh.”
We walk back to the car together, and we are tiring. Times like these I wish we could go to a restaurant, but I wasn’t ready to risk it.
We managed to get back to the car with minimum fuss and drove back to the cabin.
We decided on pizza. I took care of the crust and she got the ingredients and sauce together. Thin crust meant less time, so I that’s what we did. We ate the first pizza pretty quickly, but the second was a literal pie or stuffed pizza, taking a bit longer so we took Kal and Luna out.
youtube
Night fell quickly and the Northern Lights were out for their show.
“God, people live here,” she breathes, her eyes wide. “people wake up and go to sleep to this.”
“Yeah,” I said softly, hugging her from behind. “Nice retirement, hmm?”
She smiles at the sky and turns in my arms. “Maybe.”
“We’ll raise cairns,” I said teasingly.
“Okay, you can practice Warcraft and be a professional gamer.”
“Who says I’m not that good now?”
“Are you?”
“Okay, okay, a little more practice,” I laugh and turn her so she could look at the sky again, rocking her side to side as if we were dancing. She laughs with me. “but the acting thing, I kinda like it.”
She belly laughs at that, leaning back against me. “Gee, ya think?” She sighs, “I would write my whole life if I could.”
“I get that feeling,” I look at her and kiss her temple, my arms around her, her hands in mine. I watch her lift her ring hand and move it, making the diamond glitter and sparkle under the night sky lights. “Wondering about the ring, are you?”
“A little,” she giggles a bit nervously, looking down at it. “Is it really that old?”
“Yes,” I reply. “Many years ago one of my ancestors was a merchant. He loved someone very much, and she was afraid he would not come home to her, especially since she was a commoner. He had this ring made to let her know that she was his North Star, and no matter where he sailed or ventured, she would always be his way home.” I was nervous. I reach into my pocket, and pull out my family crest, no bigger than the size of a small button. I took her hand, and opened the locket ring. “This fits in here.” I put it in gingerly. “If there is ever any doubt of who loves and protect you, you only need open it.” I close it back turn her to me. She looks up at me as I hold her hand in mine, seemingly speechless.
“Thank you,” she breathes.
“Every knight usually has a lady,” I joke softly, still holding her hand with mine and tilting her chin up with the other. I bend down and brush my lips over hers. “Right?” She nods yes, and I pull her to me for a deeper kiss. She melted against me and we both sighed, tasting each slowly, no rush, the world was moving slower for the moment and so could we.
Suddenly her watch went off.
“Pizza?”
“Yeah,” she exhales. We walk back inside, and the house is filled with the aroma. Even Kal and Luna are sniffing around the kitchen door. I follow her in, and she pulls out a huge pizza pie.
“That’s for today and tomorrow, isn’t it?” I asked with a small laugh.
“Definitely, but we can have salad to go with it,” she says, carefully placing it on the counter. “Needs to cool.”
“Okay—” I pick her up and carry her to the bed. She wraps her arms around my neck and curls closer. I lay her down and crawl between her legs, kissing her as I make my way up. Just as my hips align, and my lips meet hers, she curls her limbs around me and reverses our positions.
“Pinned ya,” she whispers.
I chuckle at that and try to sit up, but she grabs my hands and puts them over my head.
“Pinned ya again,” she rubs my nose with hers.

Hey Destiny! Planning my first trip to WDW any advice :)
(I do hope you’re planning to go after the pandemic has been dealt with first off-- there are shops, restaurants, and certain experiences/shows that will be unavailable if you go around now-ish, and as far as I know they’re still charging full-price admission. So not only is it dangerous, it’s not worth it.)
But if you try and go next year sometime when life has presumably returned to normal...
If you can, stay on property!
Not a requirement obviously, but WDW has transportation that can get you to and from the parks so you don’t have to deal with the parking lots at the parks themselves. It’s also really nice as an adult to go to EPCOT and drink around the world without having to worry about who’s driving back
It also makes staying for the fireworks much less painful... Like it is excruciating to trudge back to your car after spending all day at the park and having to deal with the insane crowds leaving the park, and traffic in the parking lots...
Staying on property allows you to get Fast Passes and make dining reservations a whole month before other guests can. Which ties into my next point...
GET FASTPASSES AND DINING RESERVATIONS AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE
If you want to go to Magic Kingdom and go on the Mine Train, Space Mountain, and Splash Mountain with FastPass, you need to have them booked sooner rather than later. Find out when you can book FastPasses and get them the second you can.
If you couldn’t get FastPasses for it, get to the park when it opens and make a beeline to your #1 attraction
I live in Florida and I have an annual pass, so it’s not a big deal if I can’t go on my favorite rides because the lines are too long. But if you’re from out of state and this is going to be your only chance to go to Disney for the year or even YEARS, arriving early is a must
Trying to get on Rise of the Resistance (the fancy new Star Wars ride) in Hollywood Studios?
You need to be inside the park before it opens. Period. That is the only way to ensure you can get on this ride since it is insanely popular. Once inside the park, you need to use the MyDisney app to secure your place in a virtual queue. Everyone in your group needs to be registered on the MyDisney app or you will not be able to make a reservation for them. Once you’ve made the reservation, you’re free to roam the park as you will until it’s your turn to ride
Grossed out by crowded public restrooms? Use one in a sit-down restaurant.
Obviously please don’t bring your whole family into a restaurant to use its restroom. I’m talking like if one or two people in your group have to go. Just walk into the restaurant like you already have a table and go to the restroom in there. Though all of the restrooms at WDW are usually well-maintained, imo they’re even nicer in the sit-down restaurants haha. This tip is a little prissy but eh. Thought I’d include it
Disney snacks you are required by law to try
Magic Kingdom
Cheshire Cat Tail (Really yummy for breakfast while you wait in line for one of your first rides of the day)
Dole Whip Ice Cream (IT’S DAIRY FREE-- my fellow lactose-intolerant people can eat it worry-free!!!)
Sweet and Spicy Chicken and Waffle sandwich (Split with friends if you have lunch or dinner plans-- delicious snack to eat between rides or at a show)
GET A BIRTHDAY CAKE SCONE FROM THE CANDY SHOP/BAKERY!!! THEY ARE MY FAVORITE DISNEY TREATS AND I ALWAYS BRING LIKE 2 OR 3 HOME WITH ME
Animal Kingdom
Cinnamon roll (A classic-- and again, a perfect breakfast treat to share while you queue)
Night Blossom (Or its alcoholic equivalent-- really yummy slushies perfect to sip on in the outdoor queues in Avatar world)
Blueberry Cream Cheese Mousse (Need I say more? Yes it’s kind of dangerous if you can’t handle dairy though. Maybe steal a bite from someone’s just to experience life’s fleeting joys)
EPCOT
Adults who booze are obligated imo to get a Grey Goose Lemonade slushie in France. Tangy and sweet. COLD. Delicious.
Tarte aux Fraises (Honestly you can’t go wrong with anything in France... everything I’ve tried there is amazing...)
Giant pretzel (Not exactly a Disney-exclusive thing but... they’re humongous and a great snack to share with a group)
Side note while we’re in Germany-- there’s a little bar tucked into the corner near the back of this area. If you’re drinking around the world, go in there and get Apfel shots. Trust me I have good taste.
If they have them when you’re there... You need to get a meat bun in Japan. They are one of my favorite things to get at Disney Springs or in the parks when they’re available.
Hollywood Studios
(I’m not gonna lie this is not the park to get your snack on. There’s only one snack here I’m super passionate about...)
If you’re there around breakfast time (which you will be if you got there early for Star Wars), the S’mores French Toast in Toy Story Land is DELICIOUS. Just grab napkins. A lot of napkins.
Giant pretzel
This is not a recommendation, this is a warning: THE MILK IN STAR WARS LAND IS GROSS AND I HATED EVERY SECOND A DROP OF IT WAS IN MY MOUTH
Rides you should try to do while you’re in the park
Magic Kingdom
Space Mountain
Splash Mountain (I wear a poncho because I hate having wet clothes,,,,,)
I think Thunder Mountain is kinda lame but I guess it’s worth doing if the line isn’t terribly long
Dwarf Mine Train
Pirates of the Caribbean
Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin (smacktalk in the queue and try to maintain your dignity when you get 9000 points and all of your friends have nearly broken 1 million)
Haunted Mansion
Mickey’s Phillarmagic
Animal Kingdom
Expedition Everest
It’s Tough To Be a Bug (this show will probably terrify your young children if you have any, just a warning)
Flight of Passage (I GUESS... none of the rides in the Avatar section of the park are worth a 2 hour wait if you ask me...)
Dinosaur (again, this ride will probably terrify your young children... I think it’s scarier than Jurassic Park at Universal if you can believe it)
Kilimanjaro Safari (get a Fast Pass for this one-- it’s probably one of the most popular attractions in AK)
Kali River Rapids (in which I once again don a poncho like a 50-year-old man)
Festival of the Lion King (corny as hell but it’s fun)
EPCOT
(If you’re not here to check out the exhibits in each country idk what you’re doing here haha)
Test Track (honestly the only ride I like there)
Spaceship Earth (yes it’s a slow dark ride but it’s really charming and there’s a bit at the end that will probably make you and your group cry laughing)
Gran Fiesta Tour (It’s hidden in the temple in Mexico. Cute little boat ride with Donald and the Three Caballeros)
Soarin’ (My friends and I have an endurance competition to see who can keep their legs held out straight the longest throughout the ride. We got some of the people sitting around us to join in the last time we rode which was pretty hilarious haha)
I’ve heard the Frozen ride is fun, but I’ve never ridden on it myself, so I can’t really comment on it
Note about Mission Space: I got really sick on this ride, and I rode the TAME version. Most of my friends also get sick on this ride. It’s worth trying once if you’re really curious, but I was knocked on my ass for half of my day at EPCOT after riding this one.)
Hollywood Studios
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster (A really fun ride but try to keep your head back or you will have a headache all day... Bring ibuprofen.)
Tower of Terror (Probably one of my favorite Disney rides in any park. Will most likely further terrify your small children who may still be traumatized from the bugs and dinosaurs of Animal Kingdom)
Rise of the Resistance (I don’t care about Star Wars but uh. Yeah. This ride was pretty dope.)
Smuggler’s Run (One of the more immersive rides I’ve been on... The ride vehicle is cool as all get-out and there are lots of buttons you can push and levers to pull... Blame one of your friends for being a bad pilot when you only manage to snag two pieces of cargo)
Toy Story Mania (exhaust yourself and make your arms really sore as you desperately try to exert your dominance over your friends as you pop balloons with darts and throw rings around volcanos before they erupt)
MuppetVision (I’m a Muppets ride or die fan and I still think this ride is charming and funny. There’s usually never a line so it’s a perfect break in the air conditioning with beloved characters)
Minnie and Mickey’s Runaway Railway (I haven’t gotten to ride this yet, but I’ve heard good things-- and the Mickey shorts this ride is based on are HILARIOUS, so I expect good things)
Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular (DISCLAIMER: Only really fun if someone in your group is selected to be one of the townsfolk. My sister got picked last time and it was hilarious)
Fantasmic! (I like all of the fireworks shows minus the Star Wars one in HS because I really don’t care but. Fantasmic stands out. You have to watch it at least once. Try to catch the first show if you can so you can avoid some of the rush of guests leaving the park at the very end of the night)

The return
It’s coming up to 3 months since we returned to our block and it took us 8 weeks to slow down. On the weekend we slowed down we enjoyed the first official Friday night catch up with our neighbours as the full moon rose. On Saturday we went out for brunch. No sport on Sunday morning meant a sleep in. I played handball with my boys for the first time ever in my life. Lamb shanks slow cooked on the wood heater. We squeezed in a late Sunday afternoon fishing trip. It took us 8 weeks to find some calm. We had forgotten how to do normal. I haven’t written for this blog since um wow December?! My leisure time since then has been extremely limited and when it occurred I prioritised my mental wellbeing and sleep.
This journey has brought me to the edge of my psychological and physical limitations. I watched my husband do a terminator style non stop renovation while trying also to commence a rebuild. His promises to take time off over Christmas dwindled to 2 days. There was so much to do. I helped with whatever jobs I was able to and then focussed on the household and occasionally, our boys. Midway through January this year we realised trying to work on both the renovation and the rebuild was insanity. The local real-estate market was booming. Post COVID, Sydney city dwellers realised they could put in a few days in the city then work from their coastal holiday pad the rest of the week. We decided to get our investment property, come bushfire haven, onto the market before the summer ended. We mapped out each remaining job and the days required to accomplish them. We calculated selling time, settlement time and remaining bank balance. What were need to do’s and what were optional extras. If everything went to plan, we could pay to get some work done at the block and make it habitable enough to move into. It was an extreme test of time, energy and resources.
It worked. We listed by the end of February, sold in three weeks and settled five weeks after settlement. I write that all in one glib sentence. Of course all of that only happened with considerable focus and effort. Life for the boys was hectic. 99% of their toys were packed and moved into storage weeks before the house went on the market. As the house neared completion we stressed about them damaging something. When the house was on the market we stressed about them getting things dirty - the walls, the windows or the cupboards. I banished them from the bathroom, they had to brush teeth in the laundry and shower outside. Luckily it was warm and didn’t rain much in those few weeks! Anyone who has sold a house while living in it knows how painful open homes are. The logistics and effort of cleaning and styling, while working full time from home, scheduling everything between work appointments, getting the dog out of the way and the boys to school, nearly broke me. Thankfully the selling process was short, but we packed a lot of opens into that time and by the end of it all, I had become a shouty, grouchy mum and wife. It was also a real highlight to hit menopause and bring some phenomenal hormonal energy into the mix. Phew.
Before we packed up and left I was lucky enough to have a week away with the boys. My fully wired self hit Melbs and my family gave me refuge and forgave my intensity. We managed some fun and the change of scenery was a big relief. Husband, however, stayed behind to work on the temporary shed home. Holiday behind me, I returned to packup and clean and polish the house for the financial return of our lives. Literally.
Can you then imagine our triumphant and spectacular return to our block bathed in happiness and light? Um well perhaps instead picture this - we arrived exhausted to an unpowered, work in progress temporary residence in the middle of a mice plague and endured 200ml of heavy rain in four days leaving us surrounded by mud. Happy to catch the rain in our tank? I wish! The new tank leaked 8000L the week before we moved, and only our neighbour’s spare tank loan meant we had any water at all. But being so small, it overflowed and made even more mud. The heavy rain was so loud on the tin roof it frequently woke the kids in the night (who then woke us), mice ran across the floor, huntsmen spiders dropped from the ceiling. With nowhere really to unpack things, cooking became like the biggest ever memory game, which box were the bowls in? Where did I pack the cutlery? The rain delayed our solar power install so for 10 days we lived out of an esky and by torchlight. We both kept working full time, getting the boys to school, after school sport commitments and then husband kept building after he got home and into the night. After a week of stress and chaos we knew something had to give, fortunately husband could take time off work to focus on our build and family life.
Fast forward to now. The financial pressure of the summer has eased. The temporary living quarters are functional and steadily improving. We have a beautiful wood heater. Our off grid solar system is powering us even during these short winter days. I have more kitchen cupboards than ever before, plus a dishwasher! I have hung up my clothes in a full wardrobe for the first time in nearly four years. The boys each have clean new wardrobes. Their separate rooms are still being built so they are in what will be our room which is insulated and wall paneled. We can cope with an outside shower and toilet. My husband is a legend.
What’s it like actually being back? I confess I was nervous about my own and the boys emotions. Eldest son is extremely happy to be back. Youngest son has taken time to adjust but that has more been due to his fear of the dark. The noises of the bush are unfamiliar and there are no streetlights out here! There has only been one time where a prebushfire memory overwhelmed me. Every person’s bushfire experience and recovery is unique. Unlike many others we are fortunate have the opportunity to not have to build on the exact footprint of the old place and I think this is psychologically helpful. It’s not the same space, and with some trees dead and gone the landscape is altered, its a slightly different perspective. The boys are older now, so our lifestyle is different too. Slowly we are finding a new rhythm on our land. The boys are absolutely loving being back on their bikes on bush tracks.
I was excited to resume my morning walks, although maybe not as excited the dog! He’s happy to have his off-lead roam again. But the first week of walking I found tough, the burnt and recovering state forest I traverse didn’t bring me the joy it used to. In the heavily logged areas where only isolated saplings were left unlogged, they couldn’t survive the heat of the fire or they didn’t have community trees to share nutrients through their roots to support recovery. The undergrowth is now the canopy and is booming with all the extra sunlight but when I look at it, all I see is fire hazard. Then as the weeks went by, my view softened, I recognise the bush is healing like me. I am appreciating small wonders of nature. A spider’s web highlighted with morning dew or the fascination of new plants thriving. There are trees that have fully recovered, others seem to be doing well, and there is much green in the landscape to enjoy.
On my morning walk I also see which animals are about in the night from what they leave behind. There is at least one very busy wombat! We see wallabies reasonably often and last week one morning I found big roo prints in the clay right near our place. We hear a boobook owl calling most nights and more frogs chirping croaking from the gully than I ever remember. Which now makes sense, we definitely were in drought for some years prior to the fires and the creek has this year been running for months. Less exciting is hearing foxes at night, my son especially dislikes their eerie calls. In daytime the bird life is altered. We are down to one lyrebird, there used to be two with adjacent territories battling loudly with their extraordinary mimicry. But at least there is one, how a ground bird survived I can’t imagine. The yellow robins aren’t around us now, we have wrens in the cleared spaces and in the lush shrubs busy brown gerygones dart and chirp. A shrike thrush has made a nest in our bushfire remains pile, her song is piercing and wonderful. Rarely are the yellow crested black cockatoos here now. This past weekend we did see two circling wedge tailed eagles the silent assassins of the sky wheeling high over the gully with that phenomenal wingspan.
Surprisingly my greatest source of happiness in these first few months being back has come from the sky. Unobstructed by buildings, the sky feels bigger in the bush. I’m loving the late winter sunrises. My very favourite time is just after the sun has risen when the horizontal sun rays set tops of the trees bright orange. Those are magical minutes of golden tinged trees. The sunsets. The stars. The moon. the sky has been a revelation and a source of happiness. Maybe because I’m spending more time outside I notice it more. Seeing glittering stars through the steam of a hot outdoor shower makes the cold walk inside completely worth it!
Slowly I am regaining my sense of gratitude for this place. The quiet. The privilege of not seeing another house. Having no curtains and that not mattering. Not worrying about noise and neighbours. Lack of street lights at night.
All of a sudden things aren’t hectic and we are settling in. It still amazes me after 6 moves in 5 years how intense moving is and then how imperceptibly things transition to not being new anymore. Normalcy sneaks up on me every time. Clearly this isn’t really normal but we’re enjoying this new start in our old place.

growing on me

Hi lovely person! There's a part 2 to this fic, because apparently I'm out of control. When I see it go up on ao3 on the 14th, I will send you the link via tumblr. Until then, here's part 1! I hope you enjoy this fluff :)
May
The best thing about the new apartment is that there’s a garden behind the building.
It’s not the main reason Will chose to move here, exactly. But it did have some bearing on his decision. His old apartment was tiny, on the fourth floor of the complex, tucked into a dark corner with poor lighting and roaches and a leaky ceiling. He couldn’t so much as keep a houseplant alive in that place, much less any good spirits.
But for two years after college, it was all he could afford at his entry-level salary. His raise last fall put him in a better spot, and it led to this— renting out the bottom floor of a small house on the southwest side of Boston. The landlord says there’s another tenant moving in upstairs in about two weeks, but for now, Will enjoys the peace and quiet, the building all to himself. It has actual windows and floor space and sanitation that would pass inspection.
And… a garden out back.
It’s not the most lush thing in the world. If he could even call the area out back a backyard, it’s right in the center, amidst dingy grass full of brown patches that could use a proper irrigation system. The thing itself is a square patch of dirt, not the best soil but something he can definitely work with. It’s no more than ten feet across.
It’s not much. But if working in Boston means he can’t have the forest or the wide open sea or the yard his parents worked so hard to upkeep around the house he grew up in… then he can have a little garden.
So he resolves to bring the thing back to life.
*
It’ll be a vegetable garden, he decides, just like Ma always plants by the shed in the summer, because if there’s one thing that’s nice, it’s not having to buy your produce. He can envision it now— tomatoes on the left, cucumbers and summer squash under them, snap peas in the center, maybe autumn squash or pumpkins on the right side in a few weeks.
It’s the perfect summer project. When you spend all day working in front of a computer, a little dose of the outdoors in the afternoons is a nice balance.
He plants on a Saturday afternoon, donning his old work boots and a backwards snapback and stationing himself out back with Shep, who ambles around enjoying the mellow sun and napping on the patchy grass.
Shep is an Australian shepherd, or at least that’s what Will is pretty sure he is. Will adopted him by accident, after finding him on the street. His old apartment was no place for a dog, but he couldn’t stand to turn him into the shelter. It was another factor in his wanting to move out as soon as possible.
He’s shaking cucumber seeds into his dirt-stained hand when Shep lets out a little bark, not so much an alert noise but a happy one. Will grins as he hears him trot by, towards the house, and doesn’t look up from his seeds. “What’s up, Shep?”
But then, a voice. “‘Sup, doggy.”
Will whips his head over his shoulder, fearing for a moment that someone is trespassing on the property, but almost immediately he remembers the sounds of people going up and down the stairs this morning. The second tenant has moved in.
And here he is. After giving Shep a pat on the head, he makes his way across the yard and stops a few feet away.
“Oh, chill,” he says, laying eyes on Will for the first time. “Is this garden spoken for?”
Oh, no.
He’s beautiful.
He’s tall, probably about Will’s size, and looks his age, too. He has light-brown skin that makes his lavender t-shirt look bright, and he wears a floral snapback atop an undercut that ends in floppy, dark curls. He has a jawline that could cut glass, and both of his arms are covered in sleeves of tattoos, mostly of what look like flowers.
He’s… holy shit. Will is not mentally equipped to process this right now. He’s not sure he’s ever seen a prettier man in his life.
It only occurs to Will after what must be a slightly awkward few seconds that the guy has asked him a question, though. Is this garden spoken for? He tries to clear his throat, like he hasn’t just been staring blankly for the past several moments. “Some of it is.”
“Are you…” The guy pauses to scratch behind his neck, which is really not fucking fair, because it means he has to flex his tattooed arm. And he’s, um. He’s jacked. “... planning on using the some of it that isn’t?”
Will really hopes his face isn’t red. He weighs the implications of what the guy is asking, surveys the part of the garden he’s reserved for squash. If this guy wants to use the garden… so much for squash.
“I mean,” he says finally, “not if you want to use it.”
“Oh, chill,” says the guy, strolling the rest of the way up to him. He sweeps his eyes over Will’s patches of upturned soil and empty seed packets. “What are you planting?”
Will exhales. “Vegetables, mostly.”
The guy calculates for a second, then walks around the empty side of the plot. “Are you cool if I do flowers on the other side?” He spreads his hands out over the space like he can already imagine it. “Wildflowers, a trellis or two, maybe a rosebush.”
Truthfully, Will is not ‘cool’ with this. He doesn’t want to share the garden. He especially doesn’t want to share the garden with a beautiful hipster man who wears floral snapbacks and has sleeve tattoos. He wants to plant squash. He was not informed that his new neighbor was, apparently, also a gardening person, not to mention the most beautiful man in Boston.
As much as he wants to say no, he’s not cool with it, he also knows that there’s this thing called common human decency, and that they’re both tenants on the same house, and that, unfortunately, this garden technically belongs to both of them.
“That’s fine.”
The guy grins. His smile, infuriatingly, is just as gorgeous as the rest of him. His eyes are light— green or hazel, maybe. “Chill.”
Will is pretty sure he’s said chill three times in the past five minutes, which is way too many times.
The guy kneels at the edge of the dirt. Shep, meanwhile, lies down next to the spot he’s chosen, among Will’s empty seed packets. Will pauses for a second, and he wonders if the guy will leave without entertaining further conversation. When he’s still looking at the garden after a moment, Will’s curiosity (and gay frustration) gets the better of him. “Are you the other renter?”
“Oh— yeah, sorry; yeah, I am,” he says, then adds, “I’m Derek. I just got here this morning.”
“Yeah, I heard you moving your boxes,” Will replies. “I’m Will. I live downstairs.”
Derek reaches to pat Shep on the head. “Is this your dog?”
“Yeah, that’s Shep.” Will pauses. Shep closes his eyes as Derek scratches his ears, like it’s an incredibly zen experience. Will adds, as if it were not obvious, “He’s friendly.”
“Hey, Shep.” Derek smiles. He has nice hands. “You’re a fluffy guy.”
Quiet falls in the backyard for a moment. Will mourns the loss of his prospective future squash. Derek smiles vaguely at the stolen patch of dry dirt.
“Well,” he mumbles. “I should probably get unpacking, but hey, it was nice to meet you.” He stands up, and when he smiles at Will, Will feels his stomach do an entire acrobatic routine. Fuck, he’s beautiful. “I’ll see you around.”
“Yeah, uh—” Will clears his throat again. He really really really hopes he’s not blushing. “You, too. Nice to meet you.”
Little does he know that this is only the start.
*
June
Derek plants in, like, four stages.
Will doesn’t understand his process, but he keeps seeing him outside, walking back and forth between the staircase that leads down from his apartment to the garden. He plants from seed, like Will does, except for this one time he carries a mini rosebush across the yard and puts it in the corner next to Will’s tomatoes. He puts a little wire trellis in the center, and his saplings start popping up about a week after Will’s do.
Will successfully avoids talking to him for a little while, aside from the occasional hello when leaving for work in the morning or when their watering times overlap. This is good, because avoiding talking to Derek means avoiding doing something stupid and embarrassing himself.
Then, one warm afternoon in early June, he lets Shep out and sees him go straight up to Derek, who’s watering his rosebush.
Will sighs from his open window. He could use to water anyways.
“Hey, Will.” Derek waves when he approaches, and Shep, thankfully, turns back from the enemy’s side to bound up to Will. “‘Sup?”
“Not much.” Derek is wearing a sun hat and Birkenstocks, and his curls blow in the gentle breeze. He’s ethereal, like a male Persephone. “Just came down to water.”
Will cringes at himself. Of course he’s here to water. He’s holding a watering can.
“Same.” Derek grins, ignoring Will’s stupidity. Will kind of wants to die, but he starts on his cucumber and tomato mounds anyway.
Just be calm. Be cool. He’s just a hot neighbor.
“So, new neighbor,” Derek says, all bravado. “I feel incomplete. I’ve shared a garden with you for two weeks and I don’t know anything about you.”
Will shrugs. “You know my name.”
Derek snorts. “Okay, Mr. Technical. Where are you from?”
“Maine.”
“Like, beach Maine or middle of nowhere Maine?”
“Northern coast Maine.” Will pauses, and almost feels a pang. He hasn’t been home since Christmas, and he misses it. “Near Bar Harbor.”
“Oh.” Derek pauses, then kind of snorts again. “It’s bold of you to assume I know where that is.”
“Well, where are you from?”
“New York,” Derek says, which, really, Will should have been able to guess. “City, not state. I just moved up here.”
“Why did you move to Boston?”
“Work.” Derek pauses, then smiles at his rosebush. “I’m a magazine editor, but I just got promoted, so I relocated to the main office up here.”
“What kind of magazine?” Will asks, for no other reason but curiosity.
“Northeast Lawn and Garden.”
Oh my God. Will might be actually blushing now. “Wait, seriously?”
Derek grins. The brim of his hat casts a shadow over his face. “You’ve heard of it?”
“Of course I’ve heard of it,” he replies. “My ma has been subscribed to that magazine since, like, 1995.” And so have I, since I moved out, he thinks, but he doesn’t say it.
Derek laughs into the blue sky, and it’s a sweet sound. “Hey, that’s chill. I’m glad she enjoys it.”
There’s a brief quiet between them, and Will could choose this moment to leave. His watering is technically done— the garden is so small that it’s low-maintenance— but there’s something about Derek that keeps him, something enticing that wills him not to go just yet.
Besides, it’s not like he has anything better to do.
So when Derek asks, “So what do you do?”, he keeps the conversation going.
*
July
The drive from home in Maine to Boston is long.
Four and a half hours, actually, and although he gets up bright and early at his parents’ house to come home this morning, it doesn’t go by any more quickly than it has in the past. He’s been visiting for the Fourth of July, and even though his brother and a few of his cousins can be prejudiced assholes, he loves his parents, and it feels nice to be home, to be someplace not quite so lonely.
When he and Shep get back to the apartment, it’s high noon, and Derek is outside in the garden.
Will discovers this because he goes to water his plants. They’re getting bigger every day, flourishing in the summer heat, but they’re also super thirsty all the time. Derek is in the same boat— he’s put in wildflowers and a hydrangea and his rosebush and his climbing things. The garden is a tangled mess, and it’s full of weeds.
Except the thing is… Derek is outside today, and… he has no business looking as good as he does.
His shirt, for starters, is a tank top, which leaves little to the imagination when it comes to his arms with all their muscle and ink. He’s also in running shorts, and his weird sun hat, and his skin shines in the sun, and he’s… he’s a lot.
Will has talked to his neighbor, has gotten to know him a little when they’re both out here gardening at the same time. He has managed not to let his annoyance about sharing the garden be his guiding principle with regard to their interpersonal relationship. But still… Jesus fucking Christ. Derek is too much for him to handle.
He pulls his window open, and Derek seems to hear the sound, because he looks up from his flowers and waves.
“Will!” He smiles. “Hey, welcome home, dude! How was Maine?”
“It was fine.” Will pauses, tries to steady himself and maybe not just gape at the fact that he looks so fucking hot oh my God stop being such a gay disaster please focus. “How was your week?”
“Super chill.” Derek stands and steps back from the garden. “Hey, you should come down here. You have a ton of flowers on your tomato plant.”
Shep paws at the door that leads to the backyard, as if to accentuate Derek’s invitation.
You know what? Fine. He needs to water anyway.
*
That’s it. Will is going to kill his neighbor.
Derek may be beautiful, but sharing this garden is not working out. Will’s beloved snap pea plants, having climbed the trellis, are starting to choke out before they bear actual snap peas. And the reason is that Derek’s sweet pea flowers are wrapping around them, turning them brown, tearing the life out of them.
“Derek!”
Derek pokes his curly head out the window of his apartment. “Are you seriously yelling at me from the backyard?”
Will whirls around on his heel. “Your sweet peas are choking out my snap peas!”
Derek snorts. “You’re the one whose plants hijacked my trellis, bro.”
“But they’re—” Will sifts through the plants gingerly, tries to distinguish between the flowered plant and the vegetable one. “They’re dying!”
“Uh, ch’yeah, because you’re encroaching on their territory.”
“The snap peas are dying, not the sweet peas.” Will lets out an anguished sigh. “And the plants were so big—”
Derek, in his window, leans his cheek into his hand. He looks like a noblewoman in a play, in her castle while her suitor confesses his love from the streets below. “Looks like this garden just ain’t big enough for the two of us, Poindexter.”
Will groans again. “You’re an asshole,” he says. While Derek laughs at him from above, he points at him menacingly. “And if my peas die, I’m blaming you for it.”
“I’ll happily take the blame,” Derek replies. “But they’re not gonna die.”
“Yeah.” Will bristles. “We’ll see.”
*
August
The peas don’t die.
Nothing does, actually. The flowers and the vegetables grow into each other, sure, but it’s more like reluctant cohabitation than beautiful cooperation. He and Derek work around each other well into the produce season, and Will vows never to agree to share the garden again. It’s a terrible idea. Derek’s flowers are everywhere, and there could’ve been so much more room for vegetables had he claimed the whole thing before he showed up.
The upside is getting to talk to him. He guesses.
Sunset is getting earlier, but tonight, Will heads out to gather tomatoes at golden hour. Derek is sitting in the grass next to his flowers, in his floral snapback, not really working in the garden but not leaving either. If anything, he’s soaking up the sun.
“Your tomatoes are huge,” Derek says, in lieu of a greeting. “They’re shading my rose.”
Will rolls his eyes and pulls a huge beefsteak off the vine. “The sun is on that side of the yard for half the day.”
“Oh, I’m impressed, not annoyed,” he replies. He looks down at something in his hands— he’s weaving a chain of his wildflowers together, by the stems.
He seems to notice Will studying what he’s doing, so he adds, “I’m making a flower crown.”
Will almost rolls his eyes again, but restrains himself. It’s exactly the kind of hippie shit he’d expect from Derek.
“Do you want one?” Derek continues. “You’d look cute.”
Will fully blushes. He yanks a tomato, hard, and nearly knocks over his entire plant and stake in the process. “No.”
“Okay.” Derek smiles, without a care in the world, and pulls his hat off to put the flower chain on his head. It looks, of course, perfect on him. “Then you can wear my hat.”
Will pauses with his hand in his cherry tomato stalk. “Beg your pardon?”
“Here.” Derek tosses him his snapback, and it lands in the grass by his feet. Then he adds, like it means nothing, “Bet it’d look good on you.”
Will has ascertained that Derek is bi— half because he has a shirt he said he got at NYC Pride that says pretty fly for a bi guy in purple, blue, and pink, and half because he flirts with Will and then pretends like he’s not flirting. Will hasn’t disclosed his sexuality yet, for this reason. For all he knows, Derek could be like this with everyone else in his life.
He’s not in the business of getting hurt by pretty boys, especially not when they share a garden and a building with him.
“C’mon,” Derek urges, still smiling. “Just try it.”
Will bends over and picks up the hat. It’s white, with florals in pink and yellow and green. When he puts it on backwards, Derek falls into the grass and whistles.
“Wow,” he sighs at the afternoon sky. “I was right.”
“I’m keeping this,” Will says, matter-of-factly.
Derek beams. His flower crown falls crooked, daisies and cosmos and nasturtium among his curls. Will wants to kiss him, but can’t and doesn’t. “Be my guest.”
*
September
It’s September, and the grass is green.
Will is picking the very last of the tomatoes off his vines. Some of them aren’t quite ripe yet, but rumor has it the season’s first frost could come tonight, and he doesn’t want to take any chances. While he’s piling them into a basket, he hears movement behind him, and he doesn’t even have to turn to know Derek is there.
“Hey, Will.”
“Hi.” Will pauses. The tomato he pulls next is completely green. “How’s it going?”
“It’s chill.” Derek sidles up next to him and investigates the tomatoes. Today, he’s in a cardigan, like he’s anticipating the cold. “Taking the last of the goods?”
“Yeah, I have to,” Will replies. “Or else the frost’ll get ‘em.”
“I know what you mean.” Derek gazes at his end of the plot. “I cut my last few bouquets earlier.”
Will glances at him sideways. “Do you, like, give them to people?”
He shakes his head. “No one to give ‘em to.” He pauses. “There’s one on my desk at work, then two in my apartment.” He folds his arms and looks at Will’s basket of green tomatoes, then meets his eyes and adds, “You could have one, though. If you wanted.”
Will chuckles. “I’m okay.”
“Well, the offer stands if you change your mind.”
Derek stands with him while he finishes gathering the tomatoes. He picks them slowly, like dragging out this small task will maximize on the time Derek chooses to spend with him before they both retreat into their apartments again.
Like always.
“So your last harvest,” Derek says. “Are you sad?”
Will shrugs. “No. Seasons change every year.”
“Yeah, I like the fall,” he replies, then nudges his arm a little as they walk back toward the building. “But hey, this might mean we won’t see as much of each other.”
“We live a floor away from each other,” Will mumbles, which. Are they friends? He’s pretty sure they are. They’ve spent an entire summer bickering and chatting and bonding over this garden. Derek even flirts with him. But he’s pretty sure friends-slash-neighbors is all they’ll ever be.
“I guess.” Derek pauses. Will hoists his tomatoes under his arm, and they meet eyes, and for a moment, Derek is looking back at him and Will’s stomach is butterflies.
He opens his mouth to say goodnight. And at the same time, Derek says, “Do you… wanna come upstairs for dinner or something?”
Dear giftee, there is a part 2 to this! Stay tuned and I’ll make sure you get it.
