Vaulted tunnel runs through brick house by Batay-Csorba Architects
Canadian studio Batay-Csorba Architects has carved a barrel-vaulted tunnel through a brick home in Toronto designed to evoke the architecture of ancient Rome.
Named High Park Residence, the new-build home has two storeys and a basement and was designed for homeowners with Italian heritage.
High Park Residence is in Toronto
The ground and first floors exist within a barrel-vaulted archway that tunnels through the length of the property.
"The vault, in its many permutations, is one of the most common archetypes of ancient Roman architecture, characterised by its powerful modulation of light and its sense of lightness," said studio co-founder Andrew Batay-Csorba.
"Its geometry informs a relationship between the house's facade and its interior."

The front of the house is defined by a arched carport formed by a curved cutaway from the monolithic brick facade. This element takes cues from porticos, the covered porches leading to the entrances of buildings often found in Roman architecture.
A pattern of bricks protruding from the side of the facade casts patterns of light and shade cast and creates small shelves for snow to fall on and settle in winter.

Batay-Csorba Architects chose bricks to complement the surrounding homes while adding a contemporary twist.
"The tradition of brick in Toronto's residential fabric dates back to the 19th century when Toronto's stock of Victorian houses was built," said Batay-Csorba.
"In these Victorian houses, ornamental detail normally presents itself in single isolated moments of brick coursing located above apertures, along corners and at cornices. We took this singular moment of ornamentation and blew it up."

Downstairs, a double-height entrance features a blocky glass skylight that extends from the front-facing facade and connects the lower and upper levels.

"The vault is punctured, cut and peeled into new geometries that help to distribute light and air in key locations," said Batay-Csorba.
On the first floor, the main suite includes a bedroom and open bathroom which are next to another bathroom and two bedrooms, as well as a laundry room.
Interspersed at various intervals are more skylights that flood the otherwise cave-like house with light. In addition to those above the entrance and kitchen, skylights are placed atop the main suite's shower, and the other bathroom too.

Redeemed Wood Flooring - Go Eco-friendly
Tumblr media
Wood floorings are the healthy and balanced selection, they need fewer chemicals to clean than other flooring, and they do not catch dirt and also fumes in the fibers or expand mold in the grout. An increasing number of people are selecting timber floors for anyone with allergic reactions. Do not be amazed if a medical professional recommends a timber floor for your back and joints. Timber is understand to give a little as well as can be less complicated on your feet and legs. Antique as well as Reclaimed wood floors are an ever popular trend in floor covering. Wood recovered can give the advantages of old development wood with the added plus that not a single living woodland tree is sacrificed. This is where living eco-friendly enters into play. Reclaimed and also Antique wood can be grated to resemble brand-new, or in some cases consumer look for timber with nail openings, bolt openings, as well as various other fastener marks which make these characteristics component of the appeal. The old lumber will certainly have rustic personality marks from several years of use and direct exposure to the aspects. Antique wood flooring can be recovered from lumber restored from taken down old barns and structures. Vintage and also Distressed timber floors are valued for their security, patina and also beauty. A rustic timber flooring will have more of the all-natural character such as knots, distinctive shade variations, feasible insect marks, surface checking and also differing grain patterns. Redeemed or Antique flooring typically originates from the old development forests from our very early American history. Today they can still be located in floors in old houses and also historical structures in many parts of the nation. This wood presents character unrivaled by any kind of fabricated methods. Wide Plank floor covering can likewise originate from recently sawn old growth lumber. Using wider sizes and also longer sizes will reduce the variety of end to end seams in the floor which produces a historic authentic look. Much of this vintage recycled hardwood comes from old growth woodland and was used to construct old buildings. This vintage lumber has unmatched architectural top quality and personality, in addition to elegance. Some antique timber flooring, sometimes called country wood floor covering is made from salvaged oak, maple, cherry, hickory, walnut, chestnut, white oak and various other vintage redeemed woods. No two floorings are specifically alike and generally can be found in arbitrary sizes. Redeemed wood floor covering might contain attributes integral in aged wood, including broken knots, mild surface area monitoring, insect and also nail holes, weather condition checking, as well as color variant. Advantages of using Reclaimed as well as Antique wood floor covering: A floor made from antique timber has Rrerrque appeal as well as specifying character that can not be discovered in freshly sawn hardwood. o Recycling wood is an alternate to lowering trees. This is good for the environment. o Reclaimed timber has actually been changed naturally as well as time which is a web link to our past. Having an item of history in your home can be really satisfying. o The character and aging of the timber can not be duplicated. o Older growth timber is denser as well as more dimensionally secure than new development timber which are qualities preferred for timber floor covering. o Certain varieties such as American Chestnut can just be located through reclaimed wood suppliers. o What concerning Antique Wood over induction heat? Making use of radiant heating systems is expanding in appeal throughout the United States, specifically under wood floors. Convected heat is a superb home heating resource. With appropriate acclimation and also installation techniques, Reclaimed and also Antique timber is an outstanding choice over convected heat. Radiant heat is healthier for the timber than alternative furnace. The warm is equally dispersed throughout the floor at a reduced temperature. Each board is subjected to the very same quantity of heat and also does not experience irregular drying. Radiant heat in fact duplicates the all-natural process that antique wood has actually experienced. Wood that was made use of to sustain a barn, structure or factory was subjected for years to a regular increase and also reduce in temperature level as well as moisture. In some cases, the timbers where the boards were reduced have actually been somewhat contracting as well as increasing for over a century in their previous installation. Radiant heat, with its reduced temperatures as well as also circulation affects the wood floor covering similarly, yet the impact is a lot less dramatic with Antique or Reclaimed timber than recently sawn wood due to the fact that it has actually currently been via this cycle for many years! Rates Generally speaking, the price of recovered flooring is a little bit higher. Pricing for uninstalled timber can start at $5.95 a square foot and can cover the $22.00 mark. The process of transforming the reclaimed lumber into floor covering can be prolonged and also entails substantial time, money as well as competence. Finally, reclaimed wood floorings are coming to be significantly popular as a result of some customer' interest in historic preservation and additionally to progress the green building layout. These timbers typically offer superior high qualities from timber that grew gradually as well as is frequently a lot more thick than faster produced timber. Vintage and also antique redeemed wood contributes to the warmth, personality as well as ambience of an estate. This timber has character from abundant all-natural attributes. Some slabs are usually bigger boards and have a character and beauty that display an instinctive sense of consistency as well as spirit of nation living. When utilizing strong wood floor covering was the way a house was constructed, a feeling of background from a time. If you already have actually a Reclaimed or Antique wood flooring or are thinking about acquiring one, simply assume a little bit of American history is currently or can be part of your residence. What an interesting concept!

The Way To Recognize Different Wood Species: Information To The Most Common Types
youtube
We all love normal materials--and wood is no exception. It is versatile, expressive, and also can be properly used for all from structural supports and floor coverings to living area tables and fragile doorknobs. When it's sourced from sustainable woods or reclaimed from current buildings, it can be painted, stained, or left natural. Because of those numerous treatment choices, it might be especially hard --though not almost not possible! to determine certain types or species of timber.
What's more, no two pieces are exactly alike, as wood is fibrous and grows in a reaction to its instantaneous local weather and spot. This only compounds the troubles associated with distinctive wood types. However, there certainly are a number of essential standards to look for in wooden identification. We undertake a few techniques to recognize a few of the most common species of timber from the United States with sight. For more information concerning vintage furniture: visit website.
To begin with , make certain you're taking a look at a solid parcel of timber, rather than some veneer applied into plywood or MDF, or maybe a stamped object of fiber board --this really is crucial to timber identification! You can achieve so by looking at the edges of the piece and visiting the end grain fits up using the direction of the grain together the surface of the wood. In case it appears that the very same pattern repeats it self on all sides of the plank, then you're not appearing at wooden.
Second, take in to consideration whether the piece of wood you're taking a look at is stained or weathered, considering that these methods change the visible overall look of this wood and may make it tricky to see its true colour, grain direction, and makeup. As they truly are porous, many woods require stain very well. Plus, quite a few forests, such as cedar and pine, have a tendency to turn into a homogenous coloring when left out. Ordinarily, just a little bit of sanding moves a ways in revitalizing wood whose floor physical appearance was shifted --and it's a lot easier to identify that the timber along with its own grain.
Tumblr media
At this time you need to be prepared to search for a couple crucial faculties of timber: its color, kind of grain (possibly straight, knotty, or inter-locking ), and if it truly is ring-porous (at which in fact the growth bands reveal up as dark rings across the wood) or even diffuse-porous. Here is things to look for when pinpointing pine, oak, maple, walnut, cherry, birch, cedar, poplar, ash, and Douglas fir.
Pine
Pine has turned into the most typical and ample type of wood furniture from United States, also there are scores of unique species of walnut. It truly is relatively simple to identify this type of timber on account of the frequent presence of black knots as well as its own distinct yellow color (although this could on occasion lean more towards pale yellow or pale brown, depending on the precise species). In addition, it has a straight grain and can be ring-porous, or so the growth rings at the grain appear as darker brownish lines around. Because of the variations from the grain--that the visible growth rings and also the knots--it brings it self to an even rustic, casual look.
Oak
Oak is actually another common form of wood North America. Of those greater than 600 species of pine which you can get in the world, one of probably the most readily available are red oak and white oak. Both varieties have been light brown in colour, although crimson pine usually includes hints of red, and both have observable growth rings and directly egg whites.
There are few knots in red and white walnut, however a distinctive feature that makes it effortless to spot the species is observable in a particular cut of this wood, termed quarter-sawn, exactly where it exhibits strong flecks of beams. All these flecks can make amazing, strange designs with a reflective caliber and give a lot of personality to some space or design.
Maple
Once you hear walnut, you may be considering the identifying pine tree, or walnut syrup, however, the timber species of walnut is obviously sold beneath 2 distinct types: tender walnut and challenging maple.
Ultimately, Douglas fir is actually a rather common soft-wood --a word which is maybe not reflective of its durability or density, but alternatively of its position for being a conifer. Amazingly, Douglas fir is not an actual fir, but contains its own genus. It is known if you are exceptionally inflexible and powerful to its weightreduction, and therefore it truly is a priceless kind of industrial lumber.

Drawn to this historic Italianate residence, a landmark in Capitol Hill’s Harvard-Belmont Historical District, the new owners knew they needed a design firm that would respect the home’s historic exterior yet bring a modern sensibility to the interiors, which had long ago been compromised through a series of ill-conceived remodels. The palazzo-style residence—built in 1910 (one year after the famed Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and designed by Washington, D.C. architects Hornblower and Marshall)—had been commissioned by noted entrepreneur, lawyer, and railroad executive Samuel R. Hill. The five-story, 11,000-square-foot home is built entirely of cast-in-place concrete. Unique in construction, the house is thought to be the oldest of its kind on the west coast. Channeling the innovative spirit of the home’s original construction and owner, a strategy was devised to bring the home into the 21st century. The multi-phased approach involved preserving as much of the exterior of the house as possible while re-envisioning the floor plans of each of the five floors for contemporary living.
Occupying a one-acre site, the property provides expansive views across Lake Union to the Olympic Mountains. Despite numerous remodels since its original construction, the interiors were a rabbit warren of spaces that defied logic, were poorly connected to the gardens and views, and unsuited to contemporary living. “This was a large undertaking, consisting of five different phases that lasted over a period of eight years. Our clients appreciated our sensitivity to historic architecture, our love for modern design, and our willingness to weave them into a seamless expression,” notes architect Stuart Silk.
In response to the chaotic layout, main floor rooms were opened to create an interconnected plan that flows seamlessly from one space to another. Two large windows were inserted into the north side of the home to introduce views and light deep into the house. Each of the other floors were reorganized to better respond to the family’s specific needs and to take advantage of the sweeping vistas of lake Union, the city, and the Olympic Mountains from windows and terraces. “Given the hilltop location, views are everywhere, so framing those views and taking advantage of them was a critical element of the design,” notes Silk.
Important historic elements were retained and showcased, including the original fir beams in the basement and, notably, the four diamond-patterned structural iron columns, which feature rivets and webbing. The historic paneling and coffering is made of quarter sawn white oak. Custom chandeliers in the entry, dining room, and kitchen were designed by Stephen Hirt and Chico Raskey. An eighteen-foot- long island of Italian marble with burnished nickel legs is the focal point of the kitchen. Floor-to-ceiling sheets of blackened steel panels line the hallways, concealing doors to the powder room and laundry room. The door from the Diebold home safe was meticulously restored and re-purposed to become the door to the wine room. The family room features a custom-designed, hand-carved basalt coffee table.
The carriage house, originally below the house itself, was transformed to create an exercise space. Original board-formed concrete walls were left exposed and cleaned up while fir beams were repurposed for the cantilevered staircase, which was “carpeted” with blackened steel. The highlight of the exercise area is the glass-enclosed spa lined with Brazilian granite in emerald and blue hues that sparkle like a piece of jewelry.
The rooftop terrace provides 180-degree views of city, mountains and nearby St. Marks’s Cathedral (an iconic Seattle landmark). The terrace includes two fire pits and a glass covered trellis for use in less-than-perfect conditions.

View from Pendry Residences
Justin Colt
Ten years ago, the Sunset Strip in the West Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles was known for its nightlife and a hot spot for the paparazzi. But in recent years it has undergone a transformation and has become a real luxury enclave. Then, in June 2021, the opening of Pendry Residences West Hollywood by Montage Hotels & Resorts took the neighborhood to a whole new level.
The building, designed by Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects, offers everything a high-end buyer could ever wish for and more. Born from a shared vision of true Angelenos, a mix of hotel and residences, a private club, culinary inspiration by Wolfgang Puck, this will be the vibrant meeting place West Hollywood deserves. With polished comfort, impeccable service and a fresh expression of luxury, Pendry West Hollywood and Pendry Residences West Hollywood by Montage Hotels & Resorts elevate the Sunset Strip to a new level of sophistication,” Tina Necrason, executive vice president of Montage’s residential division International tells me.
Pendry West Hollywood Residences
Paul Vu
With units ranging from $3 million to $30 million, this $500 million dollar project was nearly fifteen years in the making. After all, perfection takes time. Encompassing an entire city block along the Sunset Strip, this legendary location has a rich history. The plot was originally the home of actor John Barrymore and then the location of the famous House of Blues nightclub.
Truly a new level of fully catered resort style living in Los Angeles, all homeowners have private entrances, stunning views and top-notch amenities.

This exclusive building has just 40 homes, including two- to three-bedroom floor plans from 2,000 square feet to over 4,500 square feet.

Mathew Chaney of Eyrc Architects tells me, “The architecture of Pendry Residences West Hollywood is unabashedly contemporary. The design concept was born with our intent to create superlative views and indoor-outdoor experiences with a priority for privacy. Not hindered by a nostalgic style, we are able to maximize the essential elements of lavish California living.”
Your own outdoor kitchen is the perfect place to socialize

Some properties even have expansive private outdoor spaces with terraces of up to 3400 square feet. These homes are designed to take full advantage of the city’s great weather with seamless transitions from indoor to private outdoor space. The Terrace Estates have private pools, hot tubs, and even outdoor kitchens.
Steven Ehrlich of Eyrc Architects explains, “Contemporary architecture captures the energy of Sunset Boulevard and offers superlative views of Los Angeles.” From the Hollywood Hills to Beverly Hills and all the way to downtown Los Angeles, these homes have some of the best views money can buy.

Kloof 145 is a project designed by SAOTA. Accessed from Kloof Road, which winds along the western slopes of Lion’s Head, this site is positioned in the wind-protected suburb of Clifton. Years before any development was introduced, this slope was conceivably covered by indigenous forest and fynbos. Today, however, the area is developed and enjoys spectacular views over the sandy beaches, boulder outcrops, and Twelve Apostles mountains towards the south and sunset views over the Atlantic Ocean. Photography by Adam Letch
#gallery-0-6 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 25%; } #gallery-0-6 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The first aspect of the project that required addressing was the steep slope that would have to be excavated to accommodate the structure. The home was conceived as an arrangement of staggered blocks that rise along the side of the mountain, with the upper, private levels becoming appropriately shielded from both visibility and street-level noise.
‘The conceptual approach to the design was to reinstate the qualities of a natural landscape,’ says architect Phillippe Fouché of South African architectural firm SAOTA, who lead the project. The lower part of the building, an independent apartment, is then expressed as ‘a heavy stone plinth’, its gabion-walled exterior and cocooning interior of dark-stained oak and off shutter concrete reflecting the strata of the mountainside out of which they emerge. On top of this is a transitional space that is expressed as a green terrace and braai area, representative of what would have been the landscape’s foliage level. All levels of the house are connected via a sculptural timber staircase, like a folded ribbon that, appropriate to the home’s design narrative, gradually lightens in tone as it rises.
A vertically slatted box hovers over the terrace, allowing the forest bushwillow trees below to grow into this level, with screens that can be opened or closed to adjust the amount of natural light filtering into the interior, ‘as if you were sitting in the shade of a large tree’. The structure was engineered from a durable yet lightweight aluminium in a finish that mimics the different tones of bark, a durable solution to weathering Cape Town’s capricious seasons.
‘Above this, the living level is set back considerably to follow the slope of the mountain, resulting in added privacy and acoustic buffering while creating the perception that one is on a platform, connected to the surrounding views,’ says Phillippe. ‘The space is visually extended via the introduction of a courtyard towards the mountainside, which allows for ventilation, light and, again, an opportunity for planting.’ The concrete ceiling of this level, shuttered with rough-sawn planks, championing its raw texture. This emphasis on natural materiality can also be seen in the wooden floors and timber-clad scullery in this space. The scullery also forms the base of a mezzanine-level private study, which is accessed via a bridge that spans the length of the room.
The uppermost level, the master bedroom, sits above the tree-tops and as such the materials – white marble, pale timber – and use of skylights express a feeling of air and openness while fold-away glass walls welcome in the full expanse of the view.

The garden shed transcends both time and context. Found in every corner of the world, these simple, single-story structures are used for hobbies, storage or as workshops. Built throughout history, they are usually made as a kit-of-parts construction utilizing metal, plastic or wood. Garden sheds are designed with sheathing over simple frames housing a variety of tools and equipment. They can range in complexity from open-sided tin-roofed structures to larger agricultural sheds with integrated building systems. Sited in both dense urban environments and rural contexts, garden sheds reflect an authenticity that’s closely tied to materials and craft.
Embodying this authenticity, the following garden sheds showcase elegant detailing and rethink vernacular construction. As enchanting retreats and living spaces, they go beyond utility to incorporate room for writing, making and play. Created with unique cladding and interiors, the designs are sited with carefully designed relationships to their surroundings. Sharing a common approach to view and envelope, they reimagine how transparency and light can define enclosure. Together, they reveal an architecture that’s built to surprise and delight.

Cut and Frame House by Ashton Porter Architects, London, United Kingdom
Taking the place of a shed previously located at the rear of a two-story, semi-detached residence, this new garden writing hut was designed with interconnected living spaces. Reinforcing the connection with framing elements, the project features high contrast anodized aluminum, a discreet cantilevered frame, and a floating aluminum seat.

The Enchanted Shed by SUE Architekten, Vienna, Austria
Mixing multiple programs, from a writer’s workshop to a garden room for guests, the Enchanted Shed is a renovated 1934 outbuilding of a mansard-roof house in the Vienna Woods. A large pane of glass was inserted into the renovation, walls were paneled with varnished gray fir wood, and a brass trapdoor was added to close off between floors. The project’s old, mossy roof was left untouched.
