The expression on your brother’s face is well worth the drive out here. You’re not sure you’ve ever seen him look so happy, ever—until the horse he’s been petting snuffles over the front of his shirt and he looks like he might spontaneously combust. 

(It was even worth having to coax your utterly annoying and beloved significant other out of bed this early in the morning—you’re pretty sure, for all of his griping, that Gamzee’s looking forward to this too. From what little you’ve gleaned about his family, you’re reasonably sure he might have some experience with horses?)

But this is about your brother, and Horuss looks like he’s just died and gone to heaven. He’s saying hello to each of the individual horses and ponies, and a few of them have come up to inspect him for treats, which he is happily providing, in the Very Correct manner that you caught him studying with YouTube videos and advice articles. This is quite probably the best birthday present you could have ever come up with, even if it meant waking up at four in the morning and driving all the way out here.

The creation combo has the highest health stat in all of SBURB, and nobody’s quite sure why. Probably to balance things out, but either way it makes for some interesting gameplay. As for the Maid of Light in specific, think Zarya from Overwatch. High health and a low, constant stream of damage. You’ve also got a couple team buffs and some CC, so This particular classpect is a pretty decent all-rounder. My only suggestion is to avoid anyone who can tear through your health pool, and otherwise just take a semi-active role in teamfights.

ABILITIESPassive - Knowledgeable: Your Aspect grants you 25% more EXP whenever EXP is gained.Tier I - Flare: You send out a dazzling flare of light, stunning all enemies who see it for 3 seconds and dealing a small amount of damage. At God Tier, this ability does more damage and stuns for about 5 seconds. Tier II - Lucky Hit: You power up a single strike, which will hit for a guaranteed Crit. at God Tier, your next 3 strikes will Crit.Tier III - Lightslinger: You send out 10 shards of light, which stick into walls and deal damage to all enemies in a cone in front of you. At God Tier, the shards deal more damage and can pass through multiple enemies. (The shards glow, so even without enemies to kill, this ability can be used as a light source.)God Tier - Enlightenment: You and up to 5 Allies are given knowledge on all enemies in view, including stats, weak points, and predicted attack patterns. This buff lasts until dispelled or for 5 minutes. 

Go do some cool shit with these powers, please.

“Do you need a spotter?” 

The question catches you off-guard, enough that you nearly drop the bar and make an admittedly embarrassing noise when you have to strain to keep it from crashing against the ground. From your position on the bench, it makes for a stretch you’ll feel tomorrow. 

He has the decency not to laugh. “I mean, you seem fine on your own, but if you needed--”

“I would,” you say, a little loudly, “um. I would appreciate it. It’s just.”

His eyes are kind, even when he raises an eyebrow. “Just?”

“It’s...a little heavy,” you finish lamely. 

“No shit,” says the heir of Breath, full of a cheerful confidence that makes you grateful you’re half-lying down. He rounds the bench and makes ‘gimme’ motions with his hands. 

You reach far, far back and lift the bar again with a grimace, and John patiently steps back, arms still outstretched. 

He covers you for three sets, making faces when you raise it high enough for him to ease into view. He boops your nose on one occasion, and it startles you into a laugh so suddenly you almost crash the bar into your ribcage. 

(He apologizes ceaselessly for it, but you don’t tell him this is the last thing he should be apologizing for.)

This close, his eyes are very, very blue. 

“...humour me. What do you bench?”

“I dunno, like, 160? Maybe?” 

You invite him back next week.
