You didn't really believe in something as puerile as magical girls, or whatever evil comes associated with them. Until you stood in front of a monstrous mouth, ready to swallow you whole. Your legs forgot they could run away; you just stared into the yawning abyss.

Then came a blinding light, and your eyes searched for its source. A colorful staff pierced the sky. What you didn't expect, however, was to see a tall, muscular man being the one to hold your beacon of hope. A magical boy?

Not just any magical boy, but yours, and yours only. He's made his wish a long time ago: that he'd spend the rest of his life protecting you, in every timeline, in every universe, in every reality. This world is miserable and devoid of hope, but he won't allow you to suffer its sting.

"I'm sorry, have we met before?" you ask as you squirm under his hold.

This kind of embrace is a little too intimate for a stranger whose life was just saved. It resembles more the ceremonious hold of reunited lovers.

"Why, of course. Many times already", he answers with a wide smile. "You just don't know it yet."

You glance sheepishly at the beast he's just obliterated. Perhaps it would be wise to remain within his grace, however bizarre it may be.

Is there such thing as a selfish magical guardian? A mad, callous human like him shouldn't be wearing the staff of a protector, yet one mustn't forget the semantics that come with the job: saving the world is a rather generic prerequisite. In his case, it just so happened that his world comprised of you alone.

Don't worry, he's found you once more, and he won't let go.

related to the wraith interlude: did you go about researching buddhism to write for questing beast? any interesting sources that influenced your writing?

To be honest, it's more background-radiation Buddhist terminology from an undergrad religion degree and also from literary analysis, appropriated and loosely slapped onto the themes I wanted to write already. Madoka Magica is already a very thoroughly Buddhist work, so close readings of the show tend to get at this stuff sooner or later.

I like liquidcitrus's analysis of Homura's psychology in Rebellion a lot, and @azdoine's Mara:Guanyin::Samael:Sophia post about Madohomu influenced my reading of their relationship and the show's themes pretty heavily. The work of Dr. Jenna Katerin Moran is also why I just casually bust out the word dukkha in day-to-day; that's where I get my understanding of the Incubators from. They're metaphorically symptoms of a universe where there's a fundamental gap between wanting and getting that cannot be bridged – scapegoats for our dissatisfaction; externalized internal demons – while also, on the object level, being maybe a little too content with their infinite torture farm.

Humans don't exist in Sonic World they say. And Eggman? Isn't he a human?

I think, my only issue with humans (beside Eggman) in general is... why they often are realistic while the other animals are furries - like Disney/Warner/Rubber Hose style?

I think one trope that is very underused as far as I can tell is that you have a fun little setting with one medium and then introduce eldritch abominations that have a different art style so by comparison they look truly otherworldly and terrifying.

I feel like I need to put a warning on this one? Idk. This is a small exploration on the major threat in Spirit's Creek; A widespread cult called the purists. It's framed as an in-universe article on the cult, but I'll be popping in to give some context. Also this is a LONG one. This post contains:

-Themes of religious indoctrination -sexism -religious trauma -religious sacrifice -racism allegory kinda?

"Everyone has the perfect tools for control right in front of them. You just need to know how to bend love and fear into one."

The purest message is simple. Magic is evil. Disobedience is evil. Individuality is evil. So what if these are inherent traits, natural to everyone? They were just put there by Abaddon [Satan] to tempt you towards filth and sin. Follow the light, not the beast.

Witchcraft, of course, Is considered magical. But according to purist definition, the following things are traits of magic, only done by Heathens.

-Making wishes

-Believing in 'luck'

-wearing black

-Keeping gemstones that aren't approved by the church

-Being a hybrid species

To add a little more on the whole anti-hybrid thing, 85.7% of the world's population are hybrids. In purism, it's common practice to surgically remove hybrid features like ears, tails, horns, and wings. This does not remove any other biological traits of Hybridism, but it is "The closest to pure that natural-born beasts can get" (Pastor Batin, at a 20XX public sermon).

Additionally, 99.4% of people are born with the ability to do magic. Those who cannot are born with a rare condition called Magica Carentia Disorder (MCD). People with MCD are commonly nicknamed 'Duds'. Head Pastor Batin has this condition, along with being a non-hybrid.

Additionally, according to purist belief, Women are more likely to be witches, or secretly evil. A commonly held belief within the religion is that the Salem witch trials were justified and accurate, being held by early purists. (Even though there is no evidence of purism as a religion existing until the late 1900s.)

Women are also considered 'Natural temptresses'. Do I even have to go into this one? Dress codes for women are far stricter than those given to men.

Dress code is fairly strict. Gold rings symbolize God and Nubibus [heaven], and one must be worn at all times outside of the home past age 13. Church robes are required for sermons, and black is strictly forbidden.

Sermons themselves are deeply traumatizing at times. They're very.. reminiscent of Grape Cool-aid. Fear tactics and Love-bombing are the most common tactics used by higherups.

Things like baptisms, purity rings, and the drinking of Pure/Blessed water are common.

Additionally, the cult has many illegal practices within it. These atrocious actions go unpunished, since parts of the government have been bribed and indoctrinated into the cult.

These can include many disgusting human rights violations, but the worst? Human sacrifice. If a person is acting out against the cult, they are considered 'corrupted'. A corrupted individual must be culled by church officials as soon as possible. According to Head Pastor Batin, "The only way to save a corrupt soul is to wound them with the knife of the pure, touching the damaged blood with the Blessed blade. Then, perhaps they have a chance at a peaceful eternity."

I shouldn't have to tell you why this is contradictory and heinous, and how it's clearly a control tactic.

Hey good morning guys I have a theory about Madoka Magica. The theory is that the holy Quartet has a fairytale motif. There are the reasons why I think that. First, we’re going to start with Madoka I think she’s based off beauty from beauty and the beast she has a A rose as an arrow and her bow is made out of branches. Houmra is probably based off the big bad wolf because she’s trying to stop Madoka from becoming a magical girl and normally the big wolf tries to stop fairytale protagonists from achieving their goal. Sayaka is based off the little mermaid because she has a water Motif and Octavia has a mermaid tail also in the original story of the little mermaid she turns into seafoam. Now onto Mami I think her fairytale motif is Goldilocks because of her golden hair and She gets punished by thinking she could win. Kyoko is based off a little red Riding Hood because her hair is red and she doesn’t like Houmra who is based off the big bad Wolf. Kubei is based off the fairy godmother because he has the ability to grant any wish that anyone wants

Magical Girl Yuu's First Day pt 5.1

TIL tumblr has a word limit

Apparently having a chick enrolled at an all guys school is problematic. At least that’s what Yuu picked up from Squackman’s ramblings about “scoundrels” and “wolves” and “scandals”. 

He does manage to get a hold of himself after an embarrassing rumble from Yuu’s stomach lets them know that she hasn't eaten since before her kidnapping transportation to Night Raven. The headmaster leaves with a promise to return with food and Yuu gives it even odds that he comes back. 

No, that's mean.

Yuu remembers how worried he was about the school's reputation. If nothing else he’ll come back to make sure she isn't causing trouble. 

But until then Yuu is left alone to explore Ramshackle.

The building is creaky, leaky, moldy, and a whole bunch of other things that make the magica wonder how the whole structure hadn’t collapsed yet. 

Sure Yuu had seen worse off buildings, but she'd never been expected to sleep in them. 

The walls echo with a faint moan.

Yeah, there’s nothing Birdman could say that would convince her to trust the second floor not to give out.

Without even bothering to check up the stairs Yuu decides to just sleep on the remains of an old couch in the lobby.

As she walks deeper into the hallway a burst of wind sends the dorm shuddering.

You know what? Maybe just staying by the entrance is best. Just in case there's a need for a hasty exit.

***And now for something different***

You see, while Yuu was being informed about her new immigration status Grim was on an adventure of his own. 

His whole life had been spent being chased away by people complaining about the magic beast.

 But the Great Grim isn't a beast! He’s a magician! And not just any magician, but the Greatest Magician in all of Twisted Wonderland!

While eavesdropping on people discussing magic, NRC was often name dropped as a school where the smartest, strongest, most ambitious magicians went to learn. 

Grim is smart, strong, and ambitious! Night Raven College was perfect for a prodigy like Grim! 

Apparently there’s a Dark Mirror that sends carriages out to bring promising young mages to the school.

So he waited…

And waited….

But Grim’s carriage never came.

…

So what!

If the stupid mirror won't recognize his greatness Grim will just have to show them!

 Grim taught himself how to read maps, and sneak onto transportation, and remain undetected. All so that he could prove to the world that The Great Grim isn't some stupid pest!

The plan was perfect.

 NRC’s security was no match for Grim. He easily broke in and found the room where new students were waiting. From listening in on conversation Grim knew that the freshmen would remain unconscious until the ceremony. All Grim had to do was take the robes off some chump and he was in!

Except the chump he chose woke up and ruINED EVERYTHING!

First the jerk ran off, so Grim had to chase him. 

Then he blasted Grim with some crazy pink laser!

What kind of power was that?!?!

Thankfully Grim made it to the mirror room. 

Sure he wasn't able to sneak in with the others, but if he could just get sorted, then they would have to accept him!

Yeah a window broke. And yeah there was some fire. But so what? This is a school for super prodigies! A bit of damage shouldn’t be a big deal.

But that stupid human from earlier was there again! And this time he whacked Grim with his stupid pink stick all the way across the buildings and into the nearby forest!

Mrrao! He was so close!! That jerk better watch out.

Cursing his new nemesis Grim starts heading back to the campus. Lesser mages might have given up, but the Great Grim cannot be stopped.

“Urk-!”

Okay, so maybe he's a little hurt. And he doesn't have the energy to fly. And it kinda hurts to run…

ANALYZING A SONG (Sakuran) AND HOW IT WORKS REALLY WELL FOR SHERATAN, ANSHI, AND MIRA

Sheratan is not owned by me but is made by @voruna-warframe. regardless, she's still important to anshi's and mira's story by being her partner and the main reason why the events happen in the story.

Lore info for sheratan:

"For what I have for her, she's stuck in a time loop (I made this based on what I thought what Duviri's spirals were when they announced how Duviri works) and she's aware of all the deaths and whatever else she's been through, I was thinking it could be linked to something about Eternalism. Since her exposure to the void, she has more animalistic features. She has beast-esque hands/forearms due to using her void powers the scars spread kinda like how it does on the Zariman, and the void also spread from whatever injuries she got from the void jump. The horns and pointed ears are also from the void, but I haven't really come up with a reason why yet asides from "lol void shenanigans""

With this in mind, I want to add a little context regarding her character before I talk about the song.

Sheratan's timeloops begin and end with death, so upon her dying it all resets. Sheratan uses this to advantage to find a good timeline where she's happy, the people she loves is happy, and she doesn't have to worry about fighting. The only issue is with this, is how years and years of yearning took that naive hope of happiness and turned it into a desperate obsession just to be with her partners. (think homura from Madoka Magica) She's quick to turn to self-destructive habits the moment a timeline fails for a while before hopping again.

With that being said....

Sheratan keeping to herself to prevent people from knowing what happened to her; she does not want people forming parasocial connections with her as some mythical hero.

"So distressing, Your voice has become so alien" "I want to mute it so badly"

Sheratan being unable to deal with having to slow burn the relationship with her anshi and Mira. They can't remember the last timeline they were in, So she can't act on what she's thinking, unlike past timelines that are further down the line.

"Listening closely for that fleeting sound" "A ghastly nightmare to curse my enemies"

could be Sheratan remembering mira's voice while fighting (aka, her singing or "fleeting sound") or it could be grieving mira, thinking about her voice and her grief is so strong it's 'a ghastly nightmare to curse her enemies'

"Those deceitful words will be devoted somewhere else"

A failed timeline where anshi/mira has left, meaning their words of love would be 'devoted somewhere else'

"No wonder there is no trace, For it has never existed"

Timeline hopping makes things restart to when Sheratan first wakes up from Lua. When she saves anshi and mira, she has to restart her relationship with them. Their time together 'has never existed'

"The night is audience to my tale" "And I long for tranquility in my dreams"

Failed or fresh timeline, Sheratan resorting to self-destructive ways to cope with her losses, causing her to stay out more at night and gamble @ the index or drink. She's dreaming of a timeline where she can finally be free from her curse and be with her family. Ideally, She does not want to fight anyone anymore.

""Today" that kindly chose to visit me," "Please don't go yet"

Sheratan is a. not literally talking about a day, but one of her partners that she was able to get back in that timeline. She's begging for them not to leave her alone. Or b. She's relishing in a timeline where it's the most ideal, She's finally with them and it's been a little bit. Maybe out of the blue, that little nagging feeling of being alone again bites at her.

"Torn away from my future"

Being forced to kill herself/her dying and resetting/etc in a good timeline

"Compromised with the harshened love"

Scared and afraid of her partners leaving her, after her attempts of making them stay only drives them away. She would likely resort to more upsetting ways to make them stay, even if it means hurting them in some way. These timelines most of the time always end in sheratan killing herself out of guilt for that timelines anshi/mira.

"I tremble in awe of immutable time"

What it says on the tin. Even if she can timeline hop via killing herself - she still is afraid of time.

"The dawn precedes the day, Without heed for my sigh"

Her general tiredness of having to loop. She just wants a timeline where her family can be safe without her having to manipulate things.

"Just like a lukewarm juice" "I resist that bland warmth"

She refuses to give up, even if it'd be the most healthy thing she could ever do for herself and for them. She refuses to even think about them without her in the image - so much as shutting down anyone - including her partners that reject to her timeline hopping.

"Before I knew, It became stagnant under the sun"

Sheratan feeling justified in timeline hopping by small things that ultimately don't mean anything. Feeling that stopping now would make her efforts for nothing, even if it's impossible to find a timeline where her family and herself can be happy.

"Vivid scenes fade into distant memories"

Happy memories she's across timelines start to fade until they're all gone.

"I can't muster a smile facing that thrilling night"

(note: a more accurate translation would be "I just can't laugh, I tremble in the night")

She's physically unable to really smile from her face having years and years of damage on it. But what makes her unable to actually smile? The sheer amount of pain in her heart at all times.

(regarding the more accurate translation - the part with "I tremble in the night" would just be about her serious, deep depression about every single thing. Every mistake in every timeline causes her to squirm in her bed.)

"Though I still drag my lethargy behind myself"

Forcing herself to continue despite her pain. She's tired and breaks down at almost everything, forcing herself under a 'I have to do this even if i can't take it anymore' mindset

"The 'today' that granted me mercy, I beg you," "Please don't abandon me"

Same point from the line ""Today" that kindly chose to visit me," "Please don't go yet""

She's talking about a person or an actual frame of time. With it being an actual person, She views their love for her as undeserving in good timelines. She's scared of them leaving her at any point of time, for any reason. She even goes as far as to get on her knees and while crying to beg them not to leave.

With the frame of time / day, She overthinks the amount of good and bad times she has. She thinks when she's having mostly good moments or bland ones as a kindness when she's able to be alone with them. Being able to be around them and love them is a 'kindness' for her pain. The thought of its kindness abandoning her scares her.

"Humming a soft and cunning tone"

Singing the song that mira sings to give herself comfort.

"With an identical look to a cold corpse"

She sucks at masking her pain's effect on her body overtime, neglecting herself to rush and get them home safe.

"I kick away that whole lot of discomfort so hard"

Again, she fails to mask her pain. She doesn't see herself as the same as her partners. Any shown sign that there is something wrong is replaced with a cold, fake reaction.

"'I'm not a handful' I laughed and I laughed mirthlessly"

With some of the same points above, she views her partners on another level. She can't believe them when they say she's not a handful. To her, She hates herself for what she does.

(These parts get kind of repeated. I'll still repeat them. Just refer to the above points)

This is two things

She's forcing herself to continue until she eventually dies and loops again in a doomed timeline. The sight of dawn foresees another day since even if she's killed herself before, she's still afraid of dying. There's still that voice in her head that tells her 'just stop here'

She still presses on looping. She ignores her 'lament' in her grief and forces herself to continue yearning for them even more.
