I finally installed the new 500 Amp Bluetooth Shunt in the battery compartment.

It is to the left of the green BIM (Battery Interconnect Manager,) that I upgraded to Lithium.

The two 300 Amp Hour batteries can take current very quickly when charging. So rather than overheating the chassis's alternator, it cycles in and out giving the alternator time to cool down.

This Shunt gives very precise information on the battery state, by basically tracking every molecule of power that goes in and out to calculate how much you have left to run things in the Motor Home.

Okay you gotta share the wildest ways of your name being spelled or mispronounced cause I'm genuinely curious after seeing the two ZZ!

My top favourite were Litium, Lithuania and Little - Endurance (when using my double name), all of them nowhere near my actual name, (although L & T are always at the right position)

To be honest they’re more irritating than wild, but I’ve seen (mostly on Christmas cards from school and work) Suzzanne, Suzane, Suzzane, Suzannah, Susanne (that last one is a genuine spelling but still wrong).

Not that I intend to bring him into everything, but it does just happen that the only person ever to ask me if it’s spelt with an s or a z is Paul McGann; most people just go ahead and get it wrong. I think Peter Davison thought I was crazy (or possibly insulting him in some way) when I thanked him for spelling it right without having to ask! The most common mistake with pronunciation is calling me Susan, which some people do even when I’ve just told them my name which just proves they weren’t listening.

My surname is often spelt/pronounced wrong as well. I always wondered why my Dad always spelt it out whenever anyone asked, but now I do it too, though of course I also have to spell my first name. And because our surname starts with Mac, computers seem to be convinced we’re Scottish and erroneously capitalise the next letter. 🙄

I actually never had any trouble until we moved house when I was eleven and my new school somehow recorded my entire name wrongly; my parents did correct them but when I started senior school it continued and I had no idea they meant me when they were dividing the kids into their new classes. I had to go to the head of year’s office to sort it out, something that was extremely intimidating for a shy twelve-year-old, but still ended up being called Susan by half my teachers for the next four years. I’ve been seriously touchy about my name ever since. You wouldn’t think it was so hard to get right!

One of the major downsides up to now with desalination for potable water is that when it's done at scale, it leaves behind massive amounts of salt that can toxify land it is disposed on, or can change the local underwater ecosystems when returned to the ocean.

At the moment the best practice recommendation is to reduce salt toxicity issues by storing salt, or recycling it for industry use or public consumption, but this really only works because reliance on desalination is limited.

But with these salt batteries are not only officially commercially available, but are also being presented as a viable alternative to lithium batteries. In case you're unfamiliar, litium is one of the rare earth metals contributing the exploitative mining practices, rates of child slave labor, and even genocide in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chile, Sudan, China, etc.

Lithium batteries are one of the big staples of modern industry that kind of couldn't be effectively replaced. But theoretically, this could end demand for them. There aren't many other industrial or societal uses for lithium for which we lack suitable replacement options, and batteries were FOR SURE one of the most impactful that *had* remained without suitable replacements.

I don't want to make inapprpriate links between sustainability technology, as this genuinely is not my area of expertise. But I'm really looking forward to keeping an eye on this and seeing how it changes our relationship with our world.

Is this a technological marriage that could lead to a world of solar panels running of batteries that depend on the salt byproduct of potable water generation for the whole world. What might be the ethical or sustainability curveballs that could come from a world like that? What about the other rare earth metals involved in the technology necessary to create this world?

This may be a cool bit of tech to follow through it's first 10-15yrs of societal impact.

Green energy is in its heyday. 

Renewable energy sources now account for 22% of the nation’s electricity, and solar has skyrocketed eight times over in the last decade. This spring in California, wind, water, and solar power energy sources exceeded expectations, accounting for an average of 61.5 percent of the state's electricity demand across 52 days. 

But green energy has a lithium problem. Lithium batteries control more than 90% of the global grid battery storage market. 

That’s not just cell phones, laptops, electric toothbrushes, and tools. Scooters, e-bikes, hybrids, and electric vehicles all rely on rechargeable lithium batteries to get going. 

Fortunately, this past week, Natron Energy launched its first-ever commercial-scale production of sodium-ion batteries in the U.S. 

“Sodium-ion batteries offer a unique alternative to lithium-ion, with higher power, faster recharge, longer lifecycle and a completely safe and stable chemistry,” said Colin Wessells — Natron Founder and Co-CEO — at the kick-off event in Michigan. 

The new sodium-ion batteries charge and discharge at rates 10 times faster than lithium-ion, with an estimated lifespan of 50,000 cycles.

Wessells said that using sodium as a primary mineral alternative eliminates industry-wide issues of worker negligence, geopolitical disruption, and the “questionable environmental impacts” inextricably linked to lithium mining. 

“The electrification of our economy is dependent on the development and production of new, innovative energy storage solutions,” Wessells said. 

Why are sodium batteries a better alternative to lithium?

The birth and death cycle of lithium is shadowed in environmental destruction. The process of extracting lithium pollutes the water, air, and soil, and when it’s eventually discarded, the flammable batteries are prone to bursting into flames and burning out in landfills. 

There’s also a human cost. Lithium-ion materials like cobalt and nickel are not only harder to source and procure, but their supply chains are also overwhelmingly attributed to hazardous working conditions and child labor law violations. 

Sodium, on the other hand, is estimated to be 1,000 times more abundant in the earth’s crust than lithium. 

“Unlike lithium, sodium can be produced from an abundant material: salt,” engineer Casey Crownhart wrote ​​in the MIT Technology Review. “Because the raw ingredients are cheap and widely available, there’s potential for sodium-ion batteries to be significantly less expensive than their lithium-ion counterparts if more companies start making more of them.”

What will these batteries be used for?

Right now, Natron has its focus set on AI models and data storage centers, which consume hefty amounts of energy. In 2023, the MIT Technology Review reported that one AI model can emit more than 626,00 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent. 

“We expect our battery solutions will be used to power the explosive growth in data centers used for Artificial Intelligence,” said Wendell Brooks, co-CEO of Natron. 

“With the start of commercial-scale production here in Michigan, we are well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for efficient, safe, and reliable battery energy storage.”

The fast-charging energy alternative also has limitless potential on a consumer level, and Natron is eying telecommunications and EV fast-charging once it begins servicing AI data storage centers in June. 

On a larger scale, sodium-ion batteries could radically change the manufacturing and production sectors — from housing energy to lower electricity costs in warehouses, to charging backup stations and powering electric vehicles, trucks, forklifts, and so on. 

“I founded Natron because we saw climate change as the defining problem of our time,” Wessells said. “We believe batteries have a role to play.”
