Vector is, like, the oldest out of the group (being 22) so while the youngest, sonic, being 17 at the time so the responsible adult senses are tingling

21 is the legal drinking age in gotham but in the criminal underworld that law (hell laws in general) its treated like more of a guideline than actual rule thats enforced, so its easy for them to engage in unhealthy behaviour like this

so despite them being legally not allowed to drink, its far from being their most illegal offence.

+ they just went through the ringer, the joker died, Sonic’s in mourning and they’re just. Checked out so they literally couldn’t give a shit about the legal drinking age rn

Shadow is pretty cagey about his past trauma. Sonic knows more than most, a few details about his sister’s murder and being created by a scientist to be the ultimate lifeform but i doubt he would’ve ever mentioned that scientist’s last name so that really works!

he never thought it was relevant, and the last thing he needed was for anyone to know that he was connected to Gerald’s deranged grandson. not like anyone would even suspect cuz of how much he despises the clown

Shadow himself is not aware gerald is alive for a good while and when he does find out, he’s very keen on keeping quiet about it at first

Sonic’s gonna be absolutely shocked and flabbergasted by this info tho lmao, idk when he finds out yet but how he’d take the news would vary with what stage he’s at in his arc

Vector being the oldest yet the most responsible out of them to see kids drinking alcohol even the one who is not even force to be here. Vector might also not have murder anyone here too.

Vector is still being technically forced to be here cuz literally no one else knows Vector isn’t actually a criminal and is working with batman, to everyone else he’s a monster bent on destruction. so though he would’ve given his consent to go through with this mission to feed info about it back to Knuckles anyway, they don’t really give him a choice

its not even something he’d consider and Knuckles would never have made a partnership with Vector if he was.

if anything it’s vector who has to avoid suspicion and not get murdered while being in a position of scrutiny like this one. he could have his head blown up by the government or he could be murdered by one of the other criminals if he doesn’t keep up this criminal charade

I SHOULD PROBABLY CLARIFY EGGMAN DOESN’T ACTUALLY DIE IN DC AU!!

(like ive said it multiple times, drawn him and referenced him being involved in events after suicide squad, put his supposed ‘death’ in air quotes, but i’ve noticed that some people don’t know that he isn’t dead so i probably wasn’t as clear as i thought i was lol)

Sonic just thinks he died at the end of the suicide squad and that’s what sends him into a downspiral of crisis, cuz that brief glimpse of true freedom he got scared him more than he’d like to admit

and then he’s stubbornly in denial and conflicted and rethinking a lot of things and trying to desperately hang onto the identity he had built and this fantasy he had while the everything around him is trying their hardest to make him suffer and wake him up

I like how your view towards Batman Knuckles believing the reformation of criminals like how Batman doesn't want to kill philosophy.

Also Batman Knuckles versus Poison Ivy Shadow is hilarious to imagine given how often those two buttheads from the Archies and IDW.

1) To me Batman’s empathy and drive to make Gotham a better place for everyone, his villains included, is something thats just so important to his character so i really wanted to keep that core with knuckles!

he is gotham’s protector and his rogues are part of gotham, he will fight to protect the city from them and he’ll fight to protect them too, even if its from each other, even if it’s from themselves

its just that unwavering belief thats so special to me

2) Shadow is such a fucking problem for Knuckles lmao. cuz the guy is basically a living weapon with an onions worth of skills and abilities so he’ll never be completely harmless

and his basic motivation to destroy all humanity to make way for plant life paired with him apparently not legally existing, with no trace of a backstory makes him a seemingly dead ended mystery (for now..)

and fun fact! Knuckles was (unwittingly) responsible for Shadow’s official debut as poison ivy (no costume yet tho that comes when he’s around 18)

it was about a year since Shadow woke up from cryostasis so he was about 14, he still wore his hazmat suit most of the time and in that year on earth he’d been gradually exposed to just how much humans had destroyed the planet maria loved in 50 years

like, destroying the ecosystem on the planet they all for greed? seriously?

it sounded like a dumb joke but he could feel the earth choking on the pollution, and unfortunately he was in Gotham city where that same pollution was basically everywhere and cranked to 11, like. Most plants are dying or dead

he’d been laying low trying to find anything he could about the chaos emeralds, but due to how obscure the knowledge is he wasn’t getting far

well he did get close to grabbing one once but Batman swiftly put a stop to that and Shadow barely got away

he was also lowkey traumatised by the act of a shifting shadow decending upon him but we don’t talk about that

he’d managed to avoid arrest for that incident but then Echidna industries announced

for background, when Locke was still alive he did do some good work to start making the city a better place for it’s people but unfortunately that cane with very dire environmental cost. When knuckles took over he wasn’t aware of this, he believed his father did good for gotham and knew what he was doing so only started building on those foundations Locke set up but didn’t check to see what other negative impacts there were in blind faith

so when it was brought to his attention, he decided to rectify this by partnering with another company who specialises in ‘eco-friendly’ oil

(that oil was not eco friendly)

it was gonna be this huge merger with a signing ceremony and parade and all the bells and whistles and it was everywhere on tv

the mission statement was appealing to shadow but he was hesitant and suspicious cuz it sounded too good to be true frankly. so he did some research and snooping around their main facility and found it was a hotspot for pollution in the city, dumping sewage in the river, cutting down the little green land left in the city for more factories, using supergrowth chemicals on the plants they use so the new don’t give off pollen and thus the pollinators can’t pollinate them, etc.

Shadow is obviously pissed about this and after all the bullshit he’d witnessed in this city, actively endorsing an asshole who’s actively doing all the crummy stuff in public and destroying the environment is where he reaches his limit. this time he decides to do something about it

so on the day of the parade he makes his first full public appearance as a supervillain

after joker ‘dies’, Sonic is not doing well at all. he attached his entire identity to that man and now he’s gone… he’d never felt so lost before

Whisper doesn’t exactly know why she decided to give this clown a silent comfort, she wasn’t good at it, she didn’t even particularly like him that much

…but she still stayed by and kept the others away to give him some space to breathe, and helped him keep moving with the rest of the group while he was dissociating

(maybe it’s what she wished mimic would’ve done with her when they lost their team)

sonic doesn’t really like to use guns in dc au cuz he doesn’t really see the point in using a weapon thats slower than him, especially something that could just end the fight in one shot cuz thats no fun! so despite Eggman giving him his own personalised pistol as a ‘thoughtful gift’ he just stores the thing on safety in his quills and forgets about it most of the time

most people don’t even know he’s carrying one

Shadow ends up using it more than Sonic does, grabbing it from his quills usually in emergencies. and sonic only uses it when he needs to hit smthn like a trigger from afar, not on people

that changes after suicide squad

he’s in his ‘i hate everything, i don’t know who i am, no one understands me’ phase and is slowly becoming bored with the same old routine fighting batman and while being in denial about it but he doesn’t care to drag out the fight for fun anymore

so he starts pulling it out to end fights so he doesn’t have to deal with it

most people wouldn’t really bat an eye cuz a villain using a gun is like standard fair but to those who know Sonic/fight with or alongside him often, its so out of character for him that they can tell that something is wrong
