Creepy Riddles by Katy Hall and Lisa Eisenberg, illustrated by S.D. Schindler
Just wanted to share some pics of this kids’ joke book I got from the library. I checked it out for the fun, spooky illustrations by S. D. Schindler. His scratchy pen-and-ink style- which reminds me of Edward Gorey and Charles Addams- has been a big influence on my own art style for my picture books.
Also, I love the way he draws werewolves!

writing as a craft
How we tell stories, Peter Turchi
I enjoyed teaching, but it seemed wasteful to devote so much time to conversations that only twelve people would hear. My craft books grew out of an attempt to document the kinds of thinking and talking and writing I've been doing most of my career.
“As fiction writers,” says Peter Turchi, “one of the smartest things we can do is steal from poets.” In this lecture, Turchi talks not so much about single images, but about patterns of images, or motifs, and some of the ways they can serve a story or novel, both subtly and overtly. Texts discussed include Jai Chakrabarti’s “A Small Sacrifice for an Enormous Happiness,” Guy Vanderhaeghe’s “The Jimi Hendrix Experience,” Toni Morrison’s A Mercy, and Richard Powers’ The Overstory.
On the info dump and why new writers who are frightened of the info dump should feel less hesitant about using information:
"[This is] not the same as being wary of information. Rather than rush to minimize it in our work, we should embrace the opportunities it affords, and make it as dynamic and compelling as possible."
Turchi uses the example of Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare's adaptation of the Iliad as a one actor play. At one point, the actor recites a 143 item list of wars (classical, historical and contemporary)
Imagine, for a moment, being that actor. Imagine sitting on a stage, not moving, reciting a 143 item list. It's a little like walking a highwire, once you start into it, there's nowhere else to go, no shortcut to the other side. But if you trust the power of the material -- trust the fact that the length of the walk is necessary to the effect you mean to create -- you commit to the compounding interest.
On the power of the literary aside (excerpt from Lit Hub)
Asides are essentially shorter digressions—as short as a word or a phrase, as long as a paragraph. While a digression might lead the reader to wonder when or even if we’ll return to the apparent path of our narrative journey, an aside is more of a pause, or momentary diversion. Asides tend to take on a strategic function if and when they accumulate. As we’ll see, their function can be tonal and rhythmic, they can amplify one or more aspects of the narrative voice, they can characterize, and they can even serve to underscore a story’s central movement. While a story’s narrator is most often the source of asides—as in Jane Austen, Henry Fielding, Jorge Luis Borges, and David Foster Wallace—they can also be a function of character. In “Some Other, Better Otto” Deborah Eisenberg uses asides, initially, for comic effect. Otto is an attorney specializing in intellectual property rights. The particular nature and tone of Otto’s nitpicking establish aspects of his character. As soon as we meet him, on the story’s first page, Otto complains about an impending Thanksgiving dinner he’s agreed to attend. His partner, William, responds indirectly: “I was reading a remarkable article in the paper this morning about holiday depression … Should I clip it for you? The statistics were amazing.” Otto responds by attacking William’s word choices: “The statistics cannot have been amazing, the article cannot have been remarkable, and I am not ‘depressed.’ ”
In the book, Turchi uses the example of the film Diner in which the endless late-night convos are the heart of the film, not the impending wedding that serves as a purported plot device. Turchi also quotes the Dutch magician Tommy Wonder - "misdirection must be attention directed toward something, not away from something."
Digressions and asides are in fact a form of direction: used effectively, they focus our attention on what we would otherwise overlook.
The Primitive First Person (How Can There Be Any Sin in Sincere?)
On a dominant type of narrator, per Turchi's experience judging a short story context.
... Whatever the narrator might be talking about -- the focus was always on the events and what the narrator thought about them. I came to think of this point of view as the Sincere First Person. The sincerity had nothing to do with the tone or emotional register of the story, only with the fact that we, the readers, were never meant to doubt or question or criticize the first-person narrator, except to the extent that the narrator doubted or criticized herself. ... Test the perspective of a story in the first person: We can ask, What does the narrator believe this story is about, or reveals? And then, What does the author seem to believe this story reveals? If the answers are the same, then...

How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) - A Netflix Series that's Addictive
I went into How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) expecting something like the Euphoria series, but it turned out to be a much lighter series with great writing.
There is a lot of content connected to this series such as the real-life documentary of Maximillian Mundt on whom this is based and of course the "Buba" movie on Netflix. To ensure you enjoy the series, I recommend that you watch the series first and then watch the documentary named Shiny Flakes. (The documentary is grim, to say the least )

A fun read HBO Series: DC Peacemaker To Cure Your COVID Blues
The Plot and Characters in How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)
The story revolves around a duo of friends Leonard/Lenny and Moritz/Mo who inadvertently start a drug empire to help resolve a bind they're in. There's also Moritz's crush Lisa and his arch nemesis Dan and all their classmates.
The series has a redemptive feel as the core of the series has a very Revenge of the Nerds meets 21 kinda vibe. The lead has the look of an underdog that you would root for in a movie. The background score throughout the series is really good as well. I love the cameo of Jonathan Frakes in the series because its so random that its funny.
They don't focus as much on the effects the drugs have on a person, instead, they focus on the life of teenagers aspiring for the lives they want. Also, most of the main characters don't do drugs, including Lisa except for the one time at a house party.
The fact that the lead characters don't do any drugs themselves and the fact that they don't glorify the use of drugs is great. The jokes in the series are good and highly enjoyable with all the awkwardness from Moritz and Lenny.
You might like Why Comic-Con Bangalore 2018 was almost worth the drive
Season 1
The most fun season of all three where Moritz and Lenny break out of their dork bubbles and into the cool clique. The feel of the first season is hopeful and youthfully optimistic without it being too over the top.
The dynamic between Lenny and Moritz is similar to that between Miles Teller and Jonah Hill in War Dogs. Except that Moritz who looks more like Miles Teller is the risk-taker and Lenny who is closer in appearance to Jonah Hill is the one who likes to play it safe.
Moritz Zimmerman reminds me of Better Call Saul if he didn't have to face the amount of danger that Jimmy McGill did. His appearance is a cross between Jesse Eisenberg and Miles Teller.
The journey of the drugs as they make their way through the logistics systems from the mailbox to the courier service and finally the end user is done well. The title theme is also very upbeat and the visuals of the dispersible tablet are really fun to watch.
When Buba's drugs don't sit well with the MyDrugs customers, they get deliveries from an anonymous commenter who has a unique way to drop off deliveries.
Season 2
Things get murkier and a bit darker in this season where Moritz makes friends with people from the underworld who have a soda factory as a front.
While the corporate office of the soda factory looks like an average workspace the lower levels of the building where Moritz is invited to work are used to manufacture drugs of every variety from Molly and Ecstasy.
While Moritz' Dutch drug suppliers look stunning and are calm and composed, they are stone-cold killers who rule their empire with an iron fist.

Season 3
Madness ensues as Moritz goes on a solo journey in the drug world, getting in way over his head. Lenny and Dan cut ties with Moritz, and you see how crazy Moritz can get with the help of some Molly-spiked shot given by one of his classmates.
I like the scenes where Moritz pistol whips someone unsuccessfully and another where Lenny pushes Dan's hands up when the trio are held at gunpoint.
The finale is interesting and doesn't disappoint like other series in non-English languages such as the Ragnarok Season 3.
Read Cheerful Episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation and The Original Series
Should you watch it? Yes!
This is a really fun series that I would recommend for folks above 25 years and no younger, due to the sensitive nature of content. Apart from the minimum age requirement, this is a great series with good writing and amazing visuals.

The Room - Dream Cast
This Valentine’s Day, my husband and I watched the most romantic movie ever committed to film, which is obviously The Room by and starring Tommy Wiseau. When Hollywood releases the inevitable remake (with all script, dialogue, and directional choices intact, of course), here are the actors who should play each role.
Lisa - Amy Adams
Mark - Matt Damon
Denny - Jesse Eisenberg
Claudette - Meryl Streep
Michelle - Kate Winslet
Mike - Gary Oldman
Chris-R - Dan Janjigian
Peter - Anthony Hopkins
Steven - Michael Fassbender
Johnny - Tommy Wiseau
