Steel Dawn (1987)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
“Hey I have an idea! What if we took Mad Max, but removed all of the cars!”
I dunno who said it, but it happened. The results are Steel Dawn, a picture that’s occasionally silly in an amusing way, but generally pretty dull.
In a post World War III desert landscape, a lone swordsman (Patrick Swayze, whose character is never named) witnesses the murder or his mentor at the hand of assassin Sho (Christopher Neame). His quest for revenge is interrupted when he stumbles upon a small group of settlers trying to bring water to a desolate valley. The local warlord (if you can call Brion James’ character, Damnil, that) wants the water for himself.
There are few standout elements in this generally cheap-looking picture. The complete lack of firearms, means people use edge weapons in combat. That's kinda neat, but mostly stupid. I know that in a post-apocalyptic world bullets might be difficult to find, but this is a post-war scenario, shouldn’t there be blasted tanks and guns ready to be picked up everywhere? Even if every shell has been spent, have people simply forgotten that killing each other from a distance is much safer than walking up to someone and trying to gut them with a sword? I’d expect at least one or two people to carry a crossbow, but no. It’s nitpicky to dwell on this issue. I know. In my defense, there’s little to talk about otherwise.
The poorly-written story is what really fails this movie. You expect Swayze’s romantic interest, Kasha (Lisa Niemi) to play a big part in the story. Mostly, she’s there to distract our hero one night while the baddies happen to come into the heroes’ camp and wreck the aqueduct they're constructing. Her son, Jux (Brett Hool) is constantly shown tinkering with a land yatch but it hardly plays a part in the story at all. The villains are flat and uninteresting but are bursting sparks of imagination compared to our hero, so reserved and brooding he might as well be a robot.
The whole thing is a blatant Road Warrior knockoff. The nomadic hero has a dog that faithfully accompanies him. We’re told that he’s an ex-soldier (might as well be an ex-policeman) and we learn that he once had a family he still mourns. Everyone wears rag-tag armor made of leather or repurposed sporting equipment. The only piece of visual spice is in Swayze’s signature sword, which isn’t particularly spectacular (I’d still take the Feral Kid’s razor boomerang over it) but is shiny. In a world where everything is rocks and dust, it stands out.
Steel Dawn doesn’t offer anything memorable or outstanding. It’s the kind of film you watch and then instantly forget. I’ve been doing a bit of research into the post-apocalyptic genre. This might be the worst I’ve seen so far. At least Doomsday had energy and Exterminators from the Year 3000 offered a few scattered thrills. This? It’s got so little going for it it doesn’t even become worthy of loathing. (On DVD, June 23, 2018)

Don't grieve in front of me, Dean. It makes me uncomfortable, part II...or prequel?
How'd I get here again?
Oh, yeah. I got here, because I got excited about the cars. I remembered Dean driving a brownish tan/brown car in THE SCENE from Slash Fiction? Pinto, I wondered. FORD?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alas. It's a Pontiac Acadian. I was so hopeful. It's a VERY similar style though. But it definitely calls to mind the car when Cas n' Dean presided over Mary's loss of John in 4x03. It looks like the car on the beach in 13x01, when Dean is grieving Cas. And this...is 7x06, when Dean is ALSO grieving Cas.
It's also VERY interesting how the break light's out on the driver's side. That's because Dean is out of commission. In SPN, often the headlights or the break lights show which brother is "down for the count." At the end of season 1, ep 1, it's Sam who's down-and-out, because he lost Jess.
Here, it's Dean. He "appears" on, but the break light shows us the truth.
We cut from the "out break light" to...THE winged Pony, hanged. The pony is the light. It's yellow. It's the sunshine. Because the light is out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's winged. It's in the rearview. it's noosed around the neck, like how Cas said that freewill is something you hang yourself with. He cuts it off and throw it into the backseat, desperate to forget. Cause it's Caaa---
Anyway. You could argue Dean is lamenting the life he'd left behind, but the Lisa-Ben dynamic was Dean's Ford Truck phase, and this winged thing is-- it's just-- it's just 100% pointing to Cas. If you don't think so, the next bit is damning.
Sam turns on the radio to make Dean feel better. A sad song comes on, and Dean drops the act for a MILLISECOND. And Sam? He says SORRY.
Then, he gets uncomfortable.
It's the earlier match to the peanut-butter-and-jelly-strong-choice scene from season 13x06 (widow era).
Sam is afraid of this kind of grief. (And for good reason. Thanks, John!)
"What would you say if I called on you now..." is the first line. Come when you call, etc etc etc. And Dean looks just about ready to burst into tears. No, watch the scene. He looks devastated when he hears it and realizes what it is, like a little intake of breath.
Dean grieves Cas...with music.
Tumblr media
Ah, the familiar pattern. Dean is struggling to be allowed to grieve in this season. Everyone's terrified of his grief, even Bobby, who demands he "not be a person" and "keep doing the job" in a desperate plea to keep Dean from "dying before he does." Bobby doesn't know what to say or how to grieve, so he tries to keep Dean alive the only way he can think of, with utilitarian pragmatism.
But Dean needs to feel his emotions. Even though the scene above is played for laughs, it's really about Dean's emotions leaking out despite his attempts to hide it.
Tumblr media
Ahem. Not writing Dean-Cas till "later seasons," my ass. Dean wore his heart on his sleeve whenever he was "allowed" to. My gosh!
///
EXT. ROAD – NIGHT A small, old hatchback is driving down the road. INT. HATCHBACK – NIGHT A yellow My Little Pony is dangling from the rear-vision mirror. DEAN squeezes it and it squeaks. He takes out a knife, cuts it down and tosses it into the back seat. It squeaks again as it lands.
SAM: You okay? DEAN: You know, it's bad enough that they're ganking people, wearing our mugs, but now this? Have us driving around in this... this caboodle while Baby's on lockdown. SAM: It's temporary, Dean. DEAN: Nobody puts Baby in a corner. SAM: Y-you know that's a line from -- DEAN: Swayze movie. Swayze always gets a pass! SAM: Right. Uh, well, you want some tunes or something? Here. SAM turns on the car radio. MUSIC: Air Supply’s “All Out Of Love” ♪ And what would you say if I called on you now and said that I can't hold on ♪ SAM looks at DEAN. SAM: Sorry, man, I-I... DEAN: Just leave it. Probably gonna be the only thing on. ♪ There's no easy way, it gets harder each day ♪ Please love me or I'll be gone ♪ I'll be gone ♪ SAM looks at the map FRANK gave him and DEAN starts to lip-sync along to the music. ♪ I'm all out of love ♪ I'm so lost without you ♪ SAM looks over at DEAN. ♪ I know you were right ♪ believing for so long ♪ I'm all out of love ♪ DEAN notices that SAM is watching him and stops singing. ♪ What am I without you? ♪ DEAN looks away out the driver’s side window. ♪ I can't be too late to say that I was so wrong ♪ Oh ♪ DEAN starts to lip-sync again. ♪ What are... ♪ SAM looks at him and he stops again. ♪...you thinking of? ♪ DEAN moves his head in time with the music. ♪ What are you -- ♪ SAM: Here. SAM switches off the radio and they sit in silence. SAM studies the map. Jericho is circled.
youtube
///
Someday I'll do a thing about all the car-hopping they have to do until, you know, Dean is "Dean" again.
Dean, going through the motions, "acting like one of the dead ones." And...the Impala makes a return once Dean accepts that Cas can't help, and then Cas says he's gonna go with to try and mitigate the wreckage he left.
Cas agreed to try and "fix" things, just as Dean accepted their brokenness. (No ones cares if you're broken so long as you try.)
And the we see Baby again for the first time. Hmmmm.

Patrick Swayze, the one woman man.. Adored by dozens of women in Hollywood and hundreds of others around the world, Patrick Swayze had eyes only for his wife, the only woman he truly loved and to whom he remained faithful until death, in a finally, he separated them. The immortal love story between the heartthrob of the 90s and the 14-year-old teenager who became his wife after a three-year relationship seems hard to believe, especially when the setting and atmosphere, a Hollywood of adventures and one-night happiness , is famous rather for the cemetery of broken hearts than for the great films of cinema But even in the tumultuous mirage of the land where a nobody becomes a star overnight, Swayze and Niemi managed to celebrate 39 years of marriage, 39 years in which the strong feelings of love that brought them together did nothing but it intensifies and acquires new and new meanings, love in front of which superficiality has been defeated. The two met in 1972, when he was 19 years old, and she was only 14. At that time, Niemi was taking the dance classes of Swayze's mother, the choreographer Patsy Swayze, from whom Patrick inherited his passion for dance. Patrick never aroused the media's interest in a scandal with any quarrel or attempted divorce, he did not have a macho look, he was not the protagonist of compromising video recordings, he proudly played the roles in which he was supposed to be an incurable sentimentalist and - he capitalized on this side, artistically, in the most varied possible roles. Even in the last moments, he did not want to feel sorry for himself, on the contrary, he announced from the filming sets that no, he did not die, as a publication from the United States wrote. He did not correspond to Hollywood standards from any point of view, which is why, once married to Lisa, he preferred to lead his life away from the spotlight, exactly as a champion of decency, dignity and generosity, as he was and will remain in the memory to those who had the opportunity to know him...!!!

🕊 RIP - Patrick Swayze 🕊
Patrick Wayne Swayze was born on August 18, 1952 in Houston, Texas, to Yvonne Helen "Patsy" Swayze, a choreographer, and Jesse Wayne Swayze, a chemical plant engineer draftsman.
His mother owned a dance school in Houston, where Patrick was a student. He graduated from Waltrip High School in Houston, and attended San Jacinto college in Pasadena, Texas.
He would eventually marry actress and dancer Lisa Niemi on June 12, 1975.
He first danced professionally as Prince Charming in Disney on Parade.
After a short stint as Danny Zuko in the original Broadway production of Grease, he made his film debut with a role on Skatetown U.S.A. (1979). He made his T.V. debut in 1981 on M*A*S*H (1972), as a soldier diagnosed with leukemia.
After many supporting roles in films and television shows, Swayze landed his breakthrough role as dance instructor Johnny Castle in the hit film Dirty Dancing (1987), for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. He would go on to receive a second nomination for his role as Sam Wheat in Ghost (1990), the highest-grossing film of 1990.
Unfortunately, however, he didn't capitalize on its success. His following films, including City of Joy (1992), Tall Tale (1995), Black Dog (1998), and Waking Up in Reno (2002), would not fare well with the public.
In December 2003, he returned to Broadway as a replacement for the lead role of Billy Flynn in the revival of John Kander and Fred Ebb's musical, Chicago. The production also went on tour in several cities of the U.S.
In January 2008, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He fought the illness for well over a year and was able to continue working, but died on September 14, 2009.
His most well-known movies include Donnie Darko (2001), Point Break (1991), 11:14 (2003), The Outsiders (1983), Dirty Dancing (1987), Ghost (1990), Keeping Mum (2005), Road House (1989), City of Joy (1992).

Shal, I hope you are feeling better! I wanted to add something to your Silvia-Amara meta if you don't mind me putting something into the mix as a long shot. Carmen from the djinn dream in What is and Should Never Be looks a lot like both of them. That seems like something!
Thank you. I'm feeling some better, but veeery sore and sleepless for the pain. (On the flipside, I can breathe better and already have more energy.)
This is so iiiiiiiinteresting, thank you!
I'll be honest...I had to go back to remind myself what Carmen even looked like. But yes! Carmen from the El Sol ad! Carmen the nurse! (I always thought she was a nod to one of Dean's psychosexual fixations, too; that is, films with hot men who dance like Swayze (Carmen 1983). I mean, hello Antonio Gades.
Plus, you know his thing for Spanish soap operas... ("Mi amor! Mi amor! Por favor despierta!" Poor Ricardo.)
Tumblr media
And Dean's love for soaps from 7x03 The Girl Next-door. (Yes, the "My love, my love, please wake up!" one.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
//
Ahem. Anyway. Back to our Carmen. *points* Oh, my God. Yeah, it's El Sol, but it's also the specter of the beach. I am choking on my own spit here.
Tumblr media
There's definitely something analogous in Sylvia (from season 15's Gimme Shelter) being an idealized something that Connor maybe thought he wanted, felt comfort going after, or tried to make himself want.
For that matter, I think there's something parallel here in how Amara views her love for Dean, too. Amara's view of Dean is idealized, draped in always-or-never statements, and impersonal. Meanwhile, the Dean of season 11 has grown immensely since the djinn dream in season 2. His conceptualization of love has become less romanticized:
DEAN: I can’t explain it, but to call it desire or love…it’s not that.
Carmen was an ideal, and Amara was perhaps the network's ideal, but Sylvia is actually not quite as one-to-one to either of them here. Sylvia was a real relationship with Connor, even if was perhaps a tragic childhood misstep for Connor while he was trying to figure himself out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, Carmen Porter's own words come back to haunt the Dean & Amara and Dean & Carmen relationships. Even our idealized romantic relationships falter, and they too become as baggage-ridden as our family, and our family is imperfect.
CARMEN: Well, you don't really spend a lot of time together. I mean, I just think you don't know each other all that well.
In early days, Dean's conceptualization of Carmen is adorably immature, like a teenager's dream: someone who accepts my eating habits n' idiosyncrasies, listens to me, and loves me. Someone who is "respectable" and stable. (In season 2, Dean is still, like Amara, dealing with the core wound of his nursery.)
Sylvia and Connor seemed to know each other quite well and were "a couple." He genuinely loved her, in his own way. Their connection just wasn't exactly what Sylvia thought it was, or wanted it to be. She became angry with Connor and called him a LIAR, and then she murdered him.
Dean has carried healthy relationships with dark-eyed beauties as well, like Lisa Braeden and "I-thought-we-had-a-connection" Risa from season 5's The End.
Hmmm. Okay, yes. I think your point is a good point. And it has branching points, too. There's a lot tangled up in here! Season 15's Sylvia Jones has some uncomfortable similarities to season 5's Risa, especially.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

(REF: Here's the recent stuff about Sylvia and Amara-Silvia stuff and more Amara failing to recognize romantic love and Chuck setting Amara up for disappointment.)
