The wolf's eyes shone brightly. Or maybe she thought so because not only her hearing but also her eyesight had become aggravated. Agatha froze, huddled against the wet trunk of a large pine tree.

‘They won't touch us,’ Dracula said quietly at her right shoulder.

‘Because of you?’ Agatha asked without turning her head.

Dracula took her hand.

‘They have other prey.’ He threw back his head, wiggled his nose. ‘Three miles north.’ He looked at Agatha. ‘Let's go.’

Having skirted the leader, they turned from the path of the wolf pack and slipped into the dark thicket. They moved quickly and silently. Dry grass and thick branches crunched underfoot. Agatha knew for sure that she was making a noise – Dracula, who attracted attention first in any house, palace, and room, in the forest became an invisible shadow. If it were not for the warm fingers that held her hand in the dark, she would have the feeling that she is here alone.

Safely leaving the Harker Foundation undetected, they went with Renfield straight to the airport. A private plane waiting for them took Agatha and Dracula to Cluj three hours later. There they spent the night in a hotel and a day later – it was barely dark – in a jeep rented by Renfield in advance, they moved inland.

Agatha did not ask why Transylvania, – letters from Matthias Hunyadi, as well as some other documents that Renfield managed to get, indicated that the traces of the mysterious patron of the foundation lead exactly there. For some reason, that... being, having been ‘born’ there and having acquired a perverse semblance of immortality, chose to stay in this country, and from there controlled the structure it had created.

The structure of what – Agatha preferred not to think about it. She was content with other questions, which tormented her almost incessantly night and day.

She slept less and less and more rarely wanted to eat – although she still needed human food and was not at all attracted to blood. In the latter one could be sure – Dracula had donor supplies in his suitcase, and not once when he drank it, did Agatha want to join him. Her hearing became so acute that for the first few days Dracula had to stop the car every half hour and pull over to the side of the road – Agatha could not bear the sound of tire rubbing. The sounds of the forest pounced on her at the edge of the road, but at least they were natural.

On the fourth night on the way, Agatha reached into her bag and took out an aspen stake. Placing it next to her on the seat, she looked at Dracula. He looked straight ahead at the road.

‘There is no good way out of the amphibian position,’ Agatha repeated in complete silence his words to her in the Harker foundation. Dracula was silent. ‘Promise me,’ she said, looking down at his hands gripping the steering wheel, ‘promise me that if I lose my human form before we get to... to him, you will deal with me.’

Dracula smiled slightly.

‘Do you understand what this means?’ asked, without taking his eyes off the darkening road ahead. Agatha didn't answer. The yellow headlights plucked a fox's muzzle out of the darkness. Flickering to the right of the car, the muzzle disappeared. Once again, as before, the carved leaves of low bushes flew past. ‘This means,’ Dracula said slowly, ‘that I will have to finish your conversion, wait until you wake up, and drive an aspen stake into your heart.’ He paused. ‘This is the only way in which I can be sure that you will not rise from the dead.’

Agatha swallowed silently.

‘I understand,’ she said after a few minutes of silence.

‘No, you don’t,’ Dracula said shortly. ‘But if you want – yes, I will do it.’

And they didn't talk about it anymore.

On the fifth night, when it was several miles away from Bistritz Neseud, the car broke down.

‘Can you explain to me,’ Agatha said, getting out of the jeep, ‘if the gas tank is full and all the parts are okay, then what's wrong?’

Dracula didn't answer. Coming out, he walked around the car, took from the trunk a small bag with Agatha's things and a large one – his own. Having put the supplies of blood into Agatha's bag, zipped it up, returned his bag back. Then he slammed the trunk and, saying:

‘Come on,’ turned right into the forest.

They moved quickly, but even with their speed and taking into account the fact that in the dense thicket during the day the sun was not a problem for Dracula, it took them three days to get to the nearest village. When leaving the forest after sunset, they found themselves on a narrow path, which eventually led them to a neat cobbled street, Agatha secretly sighed with relief. She was not afraid that they would die in the forest – but she liked the journey itself less and less, as well as the way Dracula behaved. And even though he didn’t say anything, the dark, tense determination, which with each mile passed more clearly showed in his gaze, truly frightened her.

Making a sign to Agatha to go behind him, Dracula moved towards a brightly painted low building with a stone basement and tightly closed shutters. Approaching, he knocked on a large wooden door. For a while, no sound came from the house. Then quiet footsteps were heard, and the door swung open.

On the threshold stood a woman in a wide white blouse and a fluffy green skirt; the woman's hair was concealed by a simple white kerchief. She looked about thirty or forty years old.

‘Tourists not. Not want tourists,’ she said, looking briefly at Dracula, in broken English.

‘We're not tourists,’ Dracula replied in English too. ‘But we need food and lodging.’

‘Tourists not,’ the woman repeated, shaking her head, and took hold of the door handle.

Dracula's hand fell on the cracked old wood of the door.

‘We need food and lodging,’ he said in Romanian. ‘Roof over our heads. Just a couple of hours. And I can help you.’

Agatha and the woman turned to him with the same look of surprise on their weary faces. The peasant woman must have decided that they were insane, the next moment Agatha thought as she watched her slowly back into the house. But following the woman's gaze, Agatha saw what shocked her so.

Numb with horror, the peasant woman looked at the ring on Dracula's left hand, with which he held the door.

Taking advantage of her confusion, Dracula followed the woman inside, taking Agatha with him. The door slammed shut behind them, and they found themselves in a small room like a hallway.

The peasant woman stood in place, frozen and looking at Dracula, her white lips whispering something, but Agatha could not make out the words. Taking a quick glance at Agatha, Dracula stepped closer to the mistress of the house. She staggered back, trembling. Her eyes, full of tears, widened. The whisper grew louder.

‘Strigoi,’ it finally came to Agatha.

Dracula stopped. Raised his hand, looked at the ring. The woman in front of him cringed as if she was expecting an attack. Dracula laughed mirthlessly.

‘My dear Carpathians,’ he muttered. And he turned to the woman. ‘Have you already seen this ring? How do you know it?’

The peasant looked wary, but not hostile.

‘He came here,’ she finally said. ‘Strigoi. He asked about you. About the person who wears this ring.’

‘Is that why you're going to leave?’ said Dracula.

The woman backed away again.

‘How –’

‘The house smells of old things and dust,’ Dracula interrupted her. ‘It smells musty, although the house itself is new and clean. This is what happens when grandma's chests are opened.’ He paused. ‘You lived here with your husband and two children, but now the house is empty. And you are about to leave in a terrible hurry. What happened?’ he said. ‘Did the strigoi do that?’

Covering her face with her hands, the woman burst into tears.

Carefully walking up to her, Agatha stroked her shoulder.

‘What is your name?’ asked. The woman raised her head.

‘Katarina,’ she said quietly.

After all, she is still a human being, sitting at the wooden table in the living room, Agatha thought distantly. Otherwise, the lack of sleep would not have affected her so badly.

The last time she slept properly was in the car, and since then... it must have been twenty hours, if not more. And before that... Agatha inhaled. She felt reality slowly slip away. The boundaries of the past and the present have become thinner, closing and uniting into one.

Dracula leans across the table, looks into Katarina's eyes.

‘What did he look like? How long has he been here? What did he want?’

Katarina winces, she tries to remember, her thick black eyebrows moving at the line of her starched white headscarf.

‘He came five days ago. Maybe he stayed for half an hour. He is tall and scary. He killed all the cattle... He promised that he would make me rich if I said that I saw... I saw you. He said he would kill the children. When he left, my husband took them and went with them to Bistritz. I had to collect the rest of my things and leave today. I don't want to be here. I want to see them.’

Dracula leans over Agatha, who is lying on the bed in her rooms in the Harker foundation.

‘Trust me, I'm nervous too.’

‘I should have finished you off,’ groans Agatha.

‘The chance is irretrievably lost.’

‘Are you that sure?’

The table is so narrow, it seems that if Dracula makes only one movement, he will grab Katarina by the neck. Katarina looks at Dracula in horror. He continues:

‘When did it start?’

‘Two... no, four and a half weeks ago,’ Katarina is almost crying. ‘There were rumors in the village that in the settlement not far from the pass, the dead had risen from their graves. Then people began to disappear. Completely disappear. No bodies or clothes were found from them. They said they were being taken by the strigoi. And then he himself came. To us here. He did not touch anyone – he only threatened that if we were silent, he would kill every single one of us. Servants with him were black, skinny. Pure ghouls.’

Dracula touches her thin skin with his lips, gently palps it with his tongue. He moans and smiles, melting glaciers in her frightened body. Agatha is afraid: a little more, and she will drown among the descending mountain avalanches.

With his palms, Dracula takes her face from both sides.

Standing up from his seat, Dracula walks around the table.

‘I need a knife and some salt,’ he says.

‘This is the first and last time I'll hurt you,’ he says.

Katarina's loud cry wakes Agatha. Startled, Agatha leans back. Dracula holds the woman's hand, blood dripping from her wrist. Dracula takes Katarina with him, they hide in the corridor, return, head to the kitchen. Here they are again in the room. Dracula brings her hand to his eyes, wipes off the blood with his fingers, closes the incision. His lips move – Agatha blinks: the sound does not reach the dormant consciousness.

‘...your clothes. Something you don't mind.’

Katarina nods and leaves and returns with an old dress and a clean, patched shirt in her hands. Dracula takes them, tears them apart, then throws them on the floor where the blood was spilled. He throws a knife on top of the clothes. Turns to Agatha. Agatha stands up silently.

The three of them go out into the hallway, Dracula takes out his phone.

‘Two miles west of the pass, you’ll get a woman. You will take her where she points,’ he says instead of a greeting and, without waiting for an answer, drops the call. He bends down to grab the bag that has been lying on the doorstep all this time. He straightens up and turns to look at Katarina. She silently looks at him.

‘Thank you,’ they say almost in unison. Dracula gives a short smile, and he and Agatha leave.

Cold air burns hot cheeks, and Agatha suddenly wakes up. Everything around is transparent and sharp, to a stifled tremor in the chest. Agatha glances over Dracula, then – to the forest spreading in the distance.

‘What was it?’ She looks back at the village house left behind.

‘I came to her in the middle of the night, attacked her. She defended herself. She grabbed the knife and cut me. I flew into a rage and tore her to pieces. I drank all the blood, and threw the body to the dogs,’ Dracula answered calmly.

Agatha nodded slowly. A good haze requires a little real emotion. A drop of salty truth on a glass of muddy water. So spoke the magic books that she happened to read.

‘Is that what he will believe?’

‘This is what he remembers,’ Dracula shrugged. Turning off the cobbled street, he walked down the hill in the tall grass. ‘Come on, we need to be in time before dawn,’ said, without turning around. Agatha picked up speed to keep up with him. They made the further journey in silence. And there was nothing special to talk about.

They found themselves in familiar places.

The night was drawing to a close when wide gray towers appeared ahead. After wading the shallow fast river, Dracula sharply quickened his pace. And at the next turn, he suddenly froze.

The access road to the castle began almost at their feet.

‘We are here,’ said Dracula, pointing somewhere to the right. And without looking back, he stepped into the dense predawn fog.

Strigoi (Romanian strigoi, Moldavian striga) – in Moldavian and Romanian mythology, a vampire and a sorcerer.
