Marinette's Elemental and Miraculous Matches (Bagua)

Wu Xing, Zodiac

Being tied to Wood and Metal, of the Bagua, Marinette is set to thrive with Lion, Turtle, Deer, and Mantis.

Lion plays off her independence and efficiency. Having a power to make herself a hero with any sort of power, it's something she'd utilize well, even with that five minute timer, having a good idea on what power would be needed, and it is canon that she does well under pressure. Uproar can also work off her expressing her thoughts, to truly get her voice out there. It is something she doesn't need as much as she will speak her mind, but she has been easily silenced and dismissed (largely seen with Alya).

With Valrr, he toes a similar line between Plagg and Tikki. Valrr is one to build up his humans, re-evaluate that they can and WILL succeed by their own greatness, they just need to realize it and embrace it. With any doubt, Valrr is charismatic and confident enough to bat it away. In spite of this, Valrr is also lazy, and is aware that other people actually exist and they're also fully capable of doing things on their own too. If Lion's power or his human's skill isn't truly needed, then he often votes to let other people deal with it. Kings/queens are only here to solve big problems, not every petty little thing. He also cherishes leisure and enjoyment, and encourages his humans to do the same (actually no matter how many busy body humans he meets, he's always baffled why they feel they must always be productive). Through this aspect, similar to Plagg, Marinette can learn that not everything needs her solving it, and can ease up in her involvement and how much she piles on.

Turtle easily plays off Marinette's nature to help, provide, and secure the lives of others. It can work off her willing to take (calculated) risks, even with her own personal safety. Shellter would easily be a favored power, working off generating shields, force fields, and domes and using them however she desired, this is a power she can get creative in how it can be used, could even be a means of semi telekinesis (which can work off Mantis' potential with her). It's also a big plus that this power isn't meant for offensive use, backing up her route of working around her opponents, using their own energy against them and moving with their flow. And between her quick eye for detail and quick reflexes, she can use it well to secure as many lives as possible, as well as her own and her allies (as there's no limit in Shellter's generation). Withdraw is another power I can see her using a lot, especially in times of stress. It's a safe space for her alone, one that's been cultivated and adjusted by each previous Turtle, granting Marinette her own chance to alter and manage this space as she desires (like delving into gardening), and can make use of what's previously established, as previous Turtles have set up tools for future generations (like a meditation pond in the garden). Withdraw is also set to allow users to detransform and unwind as themselves, and can talk to Wayzz if desired.

Speaking of Wayzz, he has a lot of the similar perks as Nooroo, and a bit of Trixx, securing him as a promising match with Marinette. Much like Trixx, Wayzz is able to adapt and adjust to the humans he's with, making sure he can bond with them quickly and share their interests,. But he's also grounded and level headed, and can help ground Marinette whenever she spirals. By set up, he's going to help her achieve her goals and work off who she wants to be, and focus more on dealing with anxieties and doubts.

Deer works off Marinette's expectations of promises kept and her preferring to bring up the good memories and reminders of who people are. And similar appeal to Cat's shadowmancy, traveling through reflections, seeing them, and slipping into a reflected world can play into her want to explore, learn what she can, and unravel what's before her.

Sillva is a regal and stoic kwami who appreciates sharp awareness and quick action, and would work to help improve these skills in Marinette, and is extra delighted that Marinette has a good social skills and is able to work off others. With this, he would help shape her to be a leader. Not one for the front lines, but someone who can direct others. He would focus on helping Marinette learn self-control, to calm herself and be more aware of what is the reality of things instead of spiraling out of control.

Mantis works off Marinette's perception and cognition. It feeds into her preference to predict and work off what's coming, and would appreciate the knowledge of having an idea of highest probability can allow her to thrive. Telekinesis not only works off her intellect, but works off her multitasking and how quickly her brain works. In Mantis' user history, she's going to be one of the best telekinesis users.

Savvy has the big appeal of working off Marinette's intellect and perceptiveness, allowing them to work off each other and these skill sets, she often takes delight in setting small challenges for Marinette and seeing how she thinks and what she notices, making her a tad coy as she notices so much more and likes to see how humans deal and solve problems. Savvy is an interesting counter, as Savvy is a kwami who dislikes tolerance of pettiness and maliciousness, and would think Marinette should deal with problematic people straight away. Can lead to Marinette learning what is tolerable and when she needs to put her foot down. Savvy will also push to make Marinette more self-reliant and independent, and for her to learn to be calmer and more collected.

Of Bagua, Marinette's viable matches are: Bee, Songbird, Eagle, and Bear. There are no subpar matches due to her core elements tied to the other three.

Bee is a Miraculous I've always found is one of those were everything clicks, symbolism wise. Marinette matches bees in being hardworking, a team player, a promising leader, likes to garden and invest herself in the life and welfare of others, and there is a certain point she has enough of being pushed around or something that bothers her. Manipulating plants and opening her mind to others to work with them opens up her leadership skills and team working, though the latter power may throw people off in how complex her planning is and how she jumps through hoops. That's probably the biggest factor that makes Bee viable instead of best, it's so natural a fit with how she is, there's not much more growth opportunity for her.

Pollen will be sweet and sassy, and being warm, open minded, and having strong values for productivity, dedication, teamwork, fellowship, and serving a purpose that helps the majority and allows you to thrive as who you are, Pollen and Marinette would get along splendidly. She would help build up Marinette's strengths, and help her learn to be firmer and harsher, as needed, when push comes to shove with those that disrupt or sabotage her. Especially as Pollen has no tolerance for disorder.

Songbird plays off Marinette's curiosity and desire to keep her ears and eyes out, to keep others informed, and to be aware of all the facts. Songbird also plays off her want to provide and help, to reinvigorate those in need and build them up. Similar to Bee, it's like an instant click that does offer additional growth or means to expand herself.

Arria is expressive, bubbly, and incredibly nosy, biggest gossip of the kwamis. Similar to Pollen, Arria has an appreciation for hard work and artisan skills, and would love and adore Marinette's craft. She would feed into Marinette's strengths (communication skills, helping others, and observation), but also weakness as Marinette can become even nosier and even more meddling.

Bear has potential as it's about broadening your horizon, using what's around you, and making use of your own personal power and reflexes. Only thing to keep it from clicking is that it is meant to be a more direct offense based Miraculous and to be a powerhouse in a fight. That's not Marinette initial style so it's something she'd have to learn to work with or work around.

Bamboo the "mama bear" of the kwamis, Bamboo is all the perks of Tikki's support and affection, without the pressure. Marinette I see thriving from her support, affection, and encouragement, and Bamboo would be there to work with Marinette's anxieties and help her emotionally to find her foundation. She is naturally protective of child users, so would be eager to help Marinette in anyway she needs, and may take matters into her own paws when push comes to shove. Marinette would truly thrive and appreciate having someone in her corner, though may struggle with Bamboo taking things to the extreme.

Eagle plays into Marinette's mobility, reflexes, want to help and provide, and her resourcefulness. Honestly, the biggest issue here is that Eagle is meant to be a lot more direct offense base, which Marinette prefers not getting into offense and if she does, prefers indirect. It's viable as she can work with it and be indirectly offensive, but it's not quite a true click. It is better than Bear as Eagle comes with more mobility and diversity in use than direct offense.

Allma can match with Marinette in being righteous, eager to help and stand up to bullies, quick action, and eye for detail. Allma is also for trying new things and exploring all options, so Marinette's open mind and thinking outside the box would delight Allma and something she'd encourage. Biggest thing to clash is that Allma would vote Marinette to be more direct and fight back more, especially against any form of oppression, but Marinette isn't entirely one for confrontation. It is something she can learn and may not be bad for her to learn, it's just not an immediate click.

They're absolutely right...

...It's the writers that deserve the lion's share of the backlash, for poor, innocent, boring-as-hell Zoe is merely a tool of the oppressor, aka Mr Astruc. What's being oppressed, you may well ask? Well, interesting storylines, proper continuity, two-dimensional personalities... I could go on. Everything that makes a show compulsive and rewarding viewing that Miraculous Ladybug conspicuously and utterly lacks in every department due to his increasingly destructive machinations, basically.

This pink-streaked plot device masquerading as a serious character can (along with another equally pointless individual called 'Soquerline' who was so unmemorable I almost forgot she was ever a thing) exists for one reason and one reason only: to diminish Chloe's relevance and role in the show to the sum of precisely nothing. Well after S5, job done I guess guys. Well done. Well done indeed. (Although apparently not... they're bringing Miss Bourgeois back for more torture in the London 'special'. Guess Tommy Boy just can't keep away from his favorite punching bag, can he?)

The irony is though, having such a super-sweet but dull-as-ditchwater Mary Sue to replace a well-established and multi-layered person such as Chloe actually sends out a seriously awful message. Why? Because if I was a bad kid and saw S1-3 Chloe, I'd think 'what a fascinating redemption arc, I can inspired by that and do better.' But after seeing S4-5 Chloe and what an arguable downgrade as a replacement the incredibly tedious Zoe is, I'd be more like 'well, obviously there's no point in trying to be good, because you'll probably turn into a psychopath overnight with no explanation in the middle of your genuine efforts to improve. And if what the show is presenting to me as the ideal for a teenage girl to be is the waste-of-blank-space that Zoe clearly is... then a life of deliquency sounds more tempting with every passing minute! Now, where did I put my spray can?'

The most shameless aspect to this whole argument though, is by those trying to paint the hapless Zoe as some kind of lesbian icon. Pardon? She got a plot-mandated crush on Marinette in one episode and somehow that makes her insipid and needless presence an asset for the gay community? Somehow a few people have got it into their heads if you 'dare' to make someone non-straight in cartoons these days you deserve a big pat on the back for that 'risk' alone. WRONG. They should also be fleshed-out, complex, necessary characters whose sexuality isn't just define them or deflect from deserved criticism as to what the hell they are doing there if they turn up in the middle of proceedings with no prior explanation. And that's all Zoe being gay is... an irrelevant trait Mr Astruc can point to cynically and say ' you're a bigot for disliking her whatever your reasons are, so I'm not listening to you' instead of engaging with the actual argument which is SHE IS NOT AND WAS NEVER NEEDED IN THE SHOW. Everything you required to make Chloe the brilliant character she could've been was RIGHT THERE in the script but you CHOSE to rub it all out and scrawl some hastily scribbled doodle with no personality other than being 'very nice' in her place. A tragedy. The worst case of self-vandalism I've ever seen. No wonder Jeremy Zag wants to start from scratch with his rebooted movies. More power to him, IMHO.

Needless to say, nearly all the above in the quoted post about her father loving her (we haven't met him yet, it's DEFINITELY not Andre Bourgeois, his name ends in 'Lee' for a start) her supposed growth (the only 'growth' she's had is when she turned into that giant golden Chloe after being akumatized) her alleged pansexuality (all in the desperate mind of the OP) her 'abusive' family (I think you'll find Chloe had it FAR WORSE over the course of the show in that regard, so why not idolise her?) is complete bunkum. and to be frank I couldn't compose a much delusional post if I tried. Sometimes I wonder: what planet are some people on to reach such implausible conclusions? I don't understand it, I'll never understand it and quite frankly I feel quite sorry for the arbiters of such risibly deluded takes.

God, I REALLY hope Juleka wins the Butterfly poll when it’s time for it - she’s the only one out of ALL the girls whose main color is actually Violet (as opposed to Pink or Indigo), and I feel like her character development wasn’t handled as well as it could’ve been (NONE of the character arcs were, but she sticks out to me in that she’s one of the more recurring supporting characters due to being Luka’s sister yet is simultaneously forgotten by both the canon show and the fandom in how things would affect HER SPECIFICALLY instead of adjacently through the people around her). I also feel like she would be a good match with whatever you’re going to solidify for Bugettes!Nooroo based on the tiny hints you’ve teased about him, both in itself and compared to Roaar, with whom I feel there were existing avenues for it to work but could’ve been sold to us much better in-show. Plus, I’d really just like to see her in a hero suit that’s actually purple; it still bugs me personally that PURPLE Tigress is far more magenta in actuality, almost red even, and very much like REFLEKTA’S main color at that.

Yeah we will see, as ultimately it'll come down to how the polls go, and I know Marinette and Rose have also gotten mentioned for Butterfly.

Juleka will also appear in the poll for Mantis, as Indigo is that in between blue and violet. So it's all kinda up in the air on how it'll go.

I also do agree. Juleka is one of the classmates that does stand out to me in her potential, and yeah it's butchered. So badly. This is primarily on the writers, but one of the things I dislike about Luka is the factor that, for the Couffaines, he's the priority. You could cut out Juleka and you wouldn't miss much. Like, the worst aspect is learning Jagged is their dad, but it was more Jagged and Luka's story than Jagged with both kids. Like, what was the point of making them both his kids when only kid really got priority in this revelation?

And yeah... Juleka with Tiger isn't really my go to pick either. I get her whole thing is trying to find her voice, to be heard and stand out. And with a kwami named Roaar, that does technically work off that agenda, but the power is One Punch Man vs doing something tied to vocals or sound. Which kinda makes the kwami's name a little random (honestly all Zodiac kwamis have really strange names that don't relate to their powers or themes).

The other odd detail is that, when you think of felines that are about roaring, tigers aren't what immediately come to mind, it's the lion. They roar to establish territory, to be heard and say "I'm here!", unless Roaar is meant to be a sort of mix of a tiger and lion? As she doesn't have a body covered in stripes?

I know that, supposedly, there's a Lion Miraculous coming, but it's not official yet.

Either way, tigers I more associate with hunting, stealthy ambush. Not really speaking out. I'll give it, tigers can be tied to leadership which does involve being heard, but it's more military leadership. They're more tied to war, aggression, and strength.

As for the kwami, to me, Roaar came off a bit of a bully. Which maybe Juleka just needs that tough love/push to speak up, but I personally didn't really care for their interactions. Though I still say Mullo and Mylene were the worst paired characters out of all kwamis and humans.

And yeah, Roaar visually doesn't really match with Juleka.

Technically, she matches with Cat the most.

Her main color is black, with bits of purple and green.

While Plagg is meant to be a black cat, there are times he's purple. And of course he has them big green eyes.

I could also see Juleka visually working with Kaalki. I see a hue of purple in her gray, and there is the green eyes to work off as well.

There's also the intrigue that Juleka wants to be a model and Kaalki expects someone famous or wealthy, getting a holder who isn't but wants to be, Kaalki would have to work with them to get them to where they both want Juleka to be; though I do see them butting heads a bit as it's pairing two of high and low status, but that could be fun. Plus, there's the pun potential of Juleka learning to be a show pony with Kaalki's help (she could've also called herself Knightmare).

And yeah, with Butterfly, Juleka could've done well. You do have to communicate with others, so Juleka would have to work at talking with others, to express her thoughts and to be heard, and there's some pressure to be taken off as it's more long range communication vs close, but the option is there for close range communication whenever Juleka is ready for it. And Nooroo would be a gentle and patient guide.

We'll have to see if it happens though.

In retrospect do you think there were any major red flags in writing up to the S3 finale of ML that foreshadowed its downfall in future seasons or do you think it all started in what you call the retool era (S4&5).

I’d say we’re dealing with a lot of “recurring issues” and some actual red flags. As I’ve stated repeatedly, the New York Special basically has the same Ladynoir break up and get back together plot as season four, and it was bad in the New York Special and absolutely horrid in season four. Also, the show’s worst episodes, ‘Reflekdoll’ and ‘Kwamibuster’ reflect a lot of the writers’ more asinine writing decisions in the future. The New York Special and some season three episodes are, therefore, definitive red flags.

But yeah, the earlier seasons had some warning signs too. Adrien/Cat Noir is presented first and foremost as a lust object of Marinette’s. We don’t see Marinette appreciating Adrien as a person until ‘Origins’; before that point she’s only literally staring slack-jawed and drooling at Adrien’s photoshoots and ads. Marinette is also destructively jealous of Adrien from the point Lila is introduced, and she only escalates with the introduction of Kagami. Marinette’s objectification of Adrien has been in the show since its inception, considering that the original Adrien, thePV Félix, is presented in promotional materials as sullen, rude and unpleasant, meaning Marinette’s infatuation was most likely purely based on his looks. So, like, the sexism of heterosexual romance but the genders are just reversed is part of the show’s DNA.

Another important thing to note about the series is that our only Adrien-focused episodes, that focus on Adrien having some kind of a development arc with his feelings where he gets to be proactive about them instead of the show just showing the audience “oh, he’s upset now” or “oh, he’s happy now” and don’t still give Marinette a lion’s share of the focus and emotional weight, are ‘Copycat’ and ‘Santa Claws’, maybe arguably ‘Gorizilla’, though I suspect the Marinette trying to score a date segment takes up far more time than the important reveal of Adrien’s family problems. The writers have always prioritized Marinette’s feelings over Adrien’s.

Adrien’s contributions on the superhero side of things have also been getting downplayed since the start. He’s the more likely target of slapstick, with the show pilot ‘Stormy Weather’ having him get treated like a ping pong ball. He’s the one getting brainwashed or taken out by the Akumas frequently. And he’s the one the heroes’ shared mentor ignores completely. In ‘Syren’, Fu had to be strongarmed into meeting Adrien once, and then he never made an effort again. This is also the episode where the idea that Adrien shouldn’t complain about being treated as less than and should just patiently wait for whatever scraps he gets as a member of a team is first introduced. However, this episode was easily overlooked at the time, because the episode, in the end, had Fu meeting with Adrien, seemingly setting up Adrien being treated more equally, a promise that was never followed up on.

Now, though, I’d like to say why these things went unnoticed as red flags and just being some recurring issues. The thing about Adrien’s objectification was this: the people watching thought it was a joke and a sign of Marinette’s immaturity. It was presented humorously, and Marinette started being less creepy at Adrien once she became more able to talk to him. This, coupled with other lessons Marinette had about clear communication with her loved ones, like ‘Weredad’ and ‘Befana’, made people believe Marinette was going to have a character arc to grow into a more mature person who’s able to treat Adrien like a human being. This is another promise the writers never followed up on when they then retconned Adrien into a RealDoll and made him Marinette’s therapist to make sure Marinette never has to treat Adrien normally.

As for the lack of Adrien focus, the reason it went unnoticed was actually the lesser focus on other heroes, and the deeper emphasis on the superhero action than in S4-5. There were less heroes and more time spent on Akuma fights, which meant more screen time for Adrien as Cat Noir at least. When Cat Noir is the primary character Ladybug can interact with, he gets to give plenty of input on things and when he’s Ladybug’s only backup, he gets to do more things in battles. And then we add to that the bigger time the earlier seasons spent on Akuma fights, we get more of both of those things. It’s simple math. So, while Adrien didn’t get to contribute decisively a lot, he did get to contribute. Also, they had this thing where Adrien’s eclectic studies would be used to have Cat Noir give Ladybug highly specific but useful information.

Basically, yeah, there were some red flags and other lesser but still worrying stuff too.

I've thought about this before, and finding the perfect Pokemon for them is so difficult that I've halfway considering making fakemon that fit them xD! Marinette is so easy, she could get an Alcremie and a Mawile and a Clefairy and a Tinkaton etc etc etc, maybe a Ledian too.... the others are not as simple....

But I found some old notes from April of 24:

Adrien:

Theoretically would be a perfect normal type trainer, but the only type that speaks out to me is one that I would want a regional form for. Specifically a Smeargle that uses its tail as a pen nib rather than a paintbrush. An "Inkpen Smeargle" could easily be a Pokemon he was given to foster his writing/reading, as those Smeargles could be good with paperwork etc etc.

A Luxray feels fitting as it's a big cat pokemon, but also has a sort of regal sense to it with it being lion-based, and could feasibly have been given to him as a Shinx. (If we're willing to bend the rules on shinies, I would think the Luxray would be melanistic.)

As for others, I could definitely see Indeedee, Umbreon, or even Espurr. In a perfect world, there'd be pokemon with those sorts of aesthetics that are also Normal types, because I feel like the idea of him specializing in Normal types just fits him. Oh well.... Claudia: Zoroark. Zoroark, Zoroark, Zoroark. Remember those theories about how N (green-haired dreamboat that he is *swoon*) was a Zoroark in human disguise? Well, Claudia's Zoroark could easily be a Karra equivalent.

I could also see her with a Vileplume and a Spinda, too. Pokemon that aren't too prized for her to be unable to get, but are still kinda cute in their mundane sort of way. I'd love to say she has an Absol, a Gengar, or a Mimikyu because they would all fit her well, but maybe those guys are too much. An entire family of Ratata she found in the floor of her apartment though? Well that's a different story...

Summaries:

Eros and Psyche AU: Lunar New Year this year is both tense and exciting- Xiaotian's pregnancy will soon be over and Red and DBK are rebuilding a rocky relationship. Both become issues when Spider Queen attacks.

There is a thirst account for Qi Xiaotian, the Monkie Kid, and there is a thirst account for Red Son. Both men run the other account secretly, admitting their dirtiest fantasies about their rival to Twitter. And then Xiaotian slips up. Smut.

AU where for a short, brief while Chloe was best friends with Nino and Marinette in elementary school. Adrien did not like this because his best and only friend would talk just about her two besties and prefer to spend time with them over him, even if he wasn’t the biggest fan of Chloe. Of course, that did not last long as Chloe’s entitlement grew and eventually she decided to just focus her friendship on Adrien and bully Marinette, leading to Marinette and Nino drifting apart. Then Origins. Twice, Fu walks into traffic. Twice, he’s saved. Once by Marinette and once by Nino. The same day, Adrien meets Chloe’s so called “besties” and decides to make them pay. Unfortunately, he’s not a very good villain. Fortunately, he’s a very good manipulator.

Chloe successfully crashes and saves a train, with the only casualty being Maribrat's leg. Lila is climbing up the social ladder with her lies, trampling Marinette underfoot. Both queen bees see an opportunity when the school announces its first prom and prom queen contest.

Long Xiaojiao and Qi Xiaotian do everything together. This includes being deflowered by Red Son. (Smut.)

AU: After his courting attempt of Prince Qi Xiaotian is blocked by Azure Lion, Prince Red decides that the best way to make his courtship known is by becoming the prince's knight.

AU: Engaged since birth, the time has come for Princes Qi Xiaotian and Red Son to be wed. Xiaotian, having not seen Red since they were toddlers, decides to secretly meet the prince. Unfortunately, he doesn't meet him. But he does meet the prince's hot bull bodyguard.

Spicynoodles get a cat, naming her after the similarities of a certain princess. One day, PIF Jr. refuses to leave Xiaotian alone.

LMK/PP: Due to a misread address, a missent letter, and some poor decisions, Qi Xiaotian finds himself trapped in the depths of the Playtime Co. factory. But he’s not gonna let DogDay be stuck too.

Based on this post, the gang is hired to investigate the rumors of a bunny animatronic ghost overnight. The truth is a little more tricky.
