Trying to get into fallout 4 modding, which should be interesting on Linux. Will be cataloguing my process here, as usual. So far, I've been able to use the Fallout London downgrader to downgrade to pre-next-gen update, which should make a lot more mods compatible. Was a simple process, really. Just go to their github page, download Git, download Qt, and run the command they listed. Then do what the installer says and you've got yourself a downgraded FO4. Now I'm gonna try and use Bottles to run MO2, which was my mod tool of choice back on Windows. Wish me luck.

whenever I open steam on my laptop there's like a 75-80% chance it has a ridiculously tiny ui scale. like so
Tumblr media
but then the remaining 20-25% of the time the ui is normal
I have been able to identify no pattern whatsoever to what makes good ui happen and/or what makes evil ui happen. it seems to be completely random. but the fact that SOMETIMES it's normal is what is truly making me crazy. if it was just broken all the time that would be less weird. and like ultimately this is not that important as I can still read everything and it all works it just looks bad. but like. why.

Now, Repella Fella also has some big updates for a more polished adventure experience:
New Engine Upgrade: The game’s now running on Construct r397 for smoother play.
Streamlined Credits: Credits are now at 30 FPS to avoid lag issues, and you can skip them if you want. Plus, they’ve added some dev footage to make it a little more interesting.
Extras Galore: They added a Bomb Dodger’s Bible PDF, three versions of the game’s theme song (including two never before released tracks), and about 200 images from the development process.
Save Game Fixes: Two bugs causing black screens during saves are squashed.
Hacking Game for All: The hacking minigame now has color indicators for order, making it more accessible for colorblind players.
Music Updates: They’ve ditched the “streamer mode” as the original music’s safe to stream. And the so-called “safe” music was getting flagged anyway.

One Way To Die - Version 5.0 Update - Redux
Hey there, death-seekers!  The day has finally come and we are releasing the brand-new version of One Way To Die; version 5.0!  There are a lot of changes that were made to the game, some requested and most not.  Also, today marks the first day of the Halloween Event!  So get out there and start hunting up those holiday-themed deaths.
Tumblr media
All-New Stuff We made a bunch of graphical changes; everything from the splash screens to new HUD to, well, the overall art style.  You now get to see what old Jenkins actually looks like, in case you were curious and we know you weren't.
We also changed how sabotaging other players works.  There is now a new menu option called Sabotage.  Selecting it will open a server menu which will allow you to select any available games to jump into and sets traps for.  You should also be able to invite your friends and enemies through Steam itself. Our previous post has more information about the new sabotage mode.
A new Story mode has been added that gives a lot more choices to how your misadventure proceeds, making it a bit safer to navigate your house and the city.  Much like Choose Mode, the options have static results for the most part. Deaths that are locked for holiday events or very specific luck values still show up pseudo-randomly.
Miss Katy, We Depreciates Ya! With the new engine updates (to Godot 3.1.1) we are cutting out two problematic operating systems; mostly due to compiling and lack of access.  These, naturally, are Linux 32-bit systems and MacOS.  The legacy version of the game will still exist, however, there just won't be any current or future updates to them.  We are sure all five of you will understand.
More? More! We have some plans to add a little more polish and a few small extras, mostly to the Deluxe DLC, over the next few months.  So stay tuned!
Oh.  Finally, for those of you who love changelogs for some weird reason, here you go:
Added: new graphical assets
Added: full statistics breakdown to non-deluxe version
Added: new Story Mode
Added: new leaderboards
Added: new Saboteur mode
Added: lobby lists for multiplayer
Changed: upgraded engine to Godot 3.1.1
Changed: many graphical assets
Changed: new splash sequence
Changed: new Godot splash image
Changed: CoaguCo API interaction
Changed: lots of code refinements under the hood
Changed: new layouts in all sections
Fixed: sound value not changing sound volume on load
Fixed: a variety of spelling and grammar errors

PDF Misadventures
This week at M3W we’ve been dealing with PDF-attached-to-an-email delivery. We’re currently working on a project that sends out information to customers via email, so they can send the information back via mail to order products from a client.
PDF is not our expertise; and therefore we thought it’d be nice to rely on a third party to generate PDF.
wkhtltopdf seemed like a natural choice. We can template a document using PHP and HTML and use it to generate a nicely laid out PDF. We decided against using something like PHPDF or similar, because it requires using another markup (in this case code) to generate a PDF.
Using wkhtmltopdf allows us to provide a consistent layout with the rest of the apps by using the same stylesheets. But it was not all seamless.
The first issue we ran into (which was a quick fix for us) was that wkhtmltopdf requires an XServer to run. This is where Linux shines, we can just spin up an xserver on an headless machine by using xvfb-run.
But this is where a bug in xvfb tripped us. The technical details are here: https://phabricator.magic3w.com/T68 - but the gist of it is that xvfb-run will combine STDOUT and STDERR for your script.
We don't write the HTML to disk to generate the PDF, and we don't write the PDF to disk, but instead directly push it to the buffer. Meaning that we capture the STDOUT and discard STDERR.
The broken xvfb-run on our server would mash together the two and cause the PDF to contain console output that should have been ommitted. While this didn't cause the PDF to become out-of-spec, a small bug in how linux handles mime-types, cause the system to attach the file with the appilcation/octet-stream instead of application/pdf content type.
Basically, PDF allows up to 1024bytes of content before a %PDF is found. It seems that mime_content_type() ignores this, and instead will assume it's not a PDF.
Our email would then be sent with an octet-stream as attachment, causing many email providers to discard the attachment due to the fact that it was potentially dangerous, and many of them had the same issue recognizing our slightly weird PDF.
We quickly fixed the broken xvfb-run script, which is surprisingly simple if you're a bit familiar with bash programming. After that our emails got sent out properly again.

I'm moving out of Garuda into straight-up Arch. Garuda is nice, but it's for some reason getting really slow. I also decided that I want something a bit tougher, that requires more tinkering.
So far, my USB drive is broken. Set to bootable and won't reformat so I can install something else in it. Gonna try and fix it. Wish me luck!

since I  have no clue about what I'm doing I'll just start semi liveblogging my misadventures of trying to dual boot a laptop with windows 10 and gentoo linux. It’ll be tagged as “laptop misadventures” in case anyone wants to filter it out.
Stuff that has already happened:
gotta start with the wonderful pleasure that is the factory installed Windows 10
deinstall everything I don't want/need/have a licence for
had to shrink the windows C: partition to make space for linux, windows said that it NEEDS at least half of the available space on the hard drive
found a tutorial to avoid that, turns out it only needed a 31gb minimum instead of the ~500gb it wanted
decided to be nice and assign windows 200gb, somehow turned into 240gb total
shrank that down to assigning 150gb (total 170someting gb) because I'm petty like that and because windows insisted on starting edge (which I had already blocked)
proceed down the handbook and attempt to make a liveCD
imagine my face when I realised that the laptop cannot run any disks
aight this is what USBs are for I guess, liveUSB it is!
the image is downloaded and verified and everything lets go!
liveUSB attempt #1: didn't boot, back to the handbook
tried a different command in the terminal: beeping sounds and slew of symbols the poor laptop I'm abusing for the cause of a liveUSB can't show. control c'd that pretty fast
wait, what dev/sdc node is this thing on??? aka time to guess and hope nothing important breaks (aka I'm currently using the family laptop and if this thing breaks my brother will kill me and won't ever let me live this down) (quick side note: the family laptop is not the one I'm trying to install linux on)
lost the coinflip but luckily nothing seems broken, time to start with what HAS to be the right one
liveUSB attempt #2: still didn't boot :(
lost the coin flip again: coin landed in the well. I wish for a working liveUSB
checked USB stick: it somehow still has all of it's original data on it (from when my dad used it last year)? where and on what did I copy and burn the stuff on o.O
maybe I should just ask my dad to burn one for me at this point but what little pride and confidence I have depends on this now. I'm invested
dev/sdc can't be found anymore... that doesn't sound too good. I guess I'll take a break for now
