Not Part of the Plan – Ben Wade

Pairing: Ben Wade x fem!reader

Warnings: sexual references

Words: 2’881

A/N: The western equivalent of “there was only one bed” with “There’s only one cell”

You had been arrested and broken out of jail at least a handful of times. But this time was the first time you had actually let yourself be arrested on purpose. After all, there was this huge shipment of silver that had to be transferred to another town soon and was currently being stored in the sheriff’s office because it offered most protection. And because you figured that getting out of the office was easier than getting in with all the guards they had now you had let them take you in. Of course it had come to your mind that an escape now might be more difficult than usual but two of your friends were in town anyways and could get you out once the silver was gone if something went wrong. You doubted the lawmen had a great hurry to get rid of you in one way or another.

What destroyed your nice little plan, however, was when in the late afternoon two men dragged another, cuffed man along. In front of the cell they stopped.

“It’s occupied already”

“Now, I don’t mind the company” the man said. You bit back a groan. It was Ben Wade, one of the more famous outlaws in this area. What you hated about him was that he could be just as charming as deadly. And when you had met him before in an intoxicated state, you had almost given in to him and shared the bed with him for a night. “Oh why, hello (Y/N), fancy meeting you here” great, he even remembered you.

“Let’s lock him in and put her…. Oh, I don’t know” you listened up. Oh no, they could not move you or your whole arrest had been for nothing.

“We could also chain him up” the first one said

“Well that almost sounds nice. ‘course only as long as she’s present” he had not just said that? You tried to give the lawmen a look as if to plea to bring the man away from here. One of the lawmen knocked his rifle to the back of his head.

“Yeah, chaining him up sounds good” the man that last spoke got to work, pushed Ben Wade towards the cell, opened one of the cuffs around the outlaw’s wrists and started to wind the chain around the cell door before securing the cuff again. And as your luck would have it, they had exactly done so at the place where the door met with the rest of the cell, meaning the door couldn’t be opened until the chains were removed. Well, the only advantage was that he wasn’t in the cell with you…

“You fellers really gonna let me stand all the time?”

“Shut up, Wade” after a last hit to his head the men returned to their stations.

“Well that’s quite the setback” your co-prisoner muttered a couple of minutes later when the lawmen were already talking animatedly and not paying attention to you anymore.

“Setback? You don’t go talking to me about setback” you approached the bars, at a safe distance from the man “I had a plan. I wanted to be here. Your presence ruined everything” he only chuckled

“Ah come on, I can’t be that bad now, can I?” your glare said enough but it amused him even more. “’Sides, I can’t find any reason why a lady like you would want to be here. Except for trying to find me of course” you scoffed. There was no way you’d tell him about your plan or the silver. “Ahh I see” he must have followed your gaze “the shipment”

“You know about it too?” he laughed

“You think I’d be here if I didn’t want to?” he sounded almost offended and you crossed your arms. This didn’t look good for you. Because you had to free him in order to open the door and then he would have at least a second head start to get the money and leave you behind in the mess. Who guaranteed he didn’t even turn against you? “Tell you what… considering the situation here… how ‘bout we make most of the lil’ setback and collaborate and then share the loot?”

“Who says I want to share?”

“I know you just realized that if we don’t work together, Imma be quicker to get out of here”

“So what? Who tells me you’re not gonna betray me if I agree to help you?” he smiled

“Well, if you want the money or get out of here you will need to free me. And I can’t get away on my own, my gang’s outside, they’re not gonna come in to check on me. Means I am reliant on you to get away from that door. Since I don’t like being in debt to someone consider getting a share of the silver your compensation” you shook your head

“I was here first. I want more than half. At least 70%”

“I’ve got more people in my outfit”

“If you had arrived later I might have been gone with the money already so be careful with what you demand”

“You even know how much worth the shipment got?”

“No”

“Then how about we get away from here, get the silver, lose the law and then ponder over a fair share?” you sighed. Maybe he was right. You could be lucky he didn’t turn against you to get all the money. At least yet.

“Okay” you agree. “But you will tell me each and every detail of your plan. And should I realize that you as much as left out a tiny little thing you’ll hear from me, mister. Or if your gang thinks they want to get rid of us”

“No worries ‘bout that, I promise. However, don’t you think it’d be fair if you told me your plan as well? At least in broad strokes, so we can see if they interlap somewhere and use that to our advantage” you groaned

“Alright, fine”

You hated to admit it but maybe his plan was a tad better than the one you had but generally, they were pretty much the same. The only mayor difference was the time you planned to execute it and since Wade and his men had picked an earlier time and had more men, you agreed to do it in the late evening instead the dead of the night.

Once all but two lawmen were gone, you still waited until one went to sleep, leaving his colleague in charge of watching the prisoners and the silver. Somehow you were quite nervous about the plan suddenly because there now were so many new factors to it.

“Don’t you wanna get out of here?” Wade suddenly asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Just going over the plan a last time” you growled, as you approached the bars and leant against them, so the deputy couldn’t see what you were doing – cracking open the lock on the handcuffs. The lock sprang open and you shot the other outlaw a warning glance. He only let out a chuckle, thew a glance to the deputy at the desk.

“Take cover” he whispered before taking a leap towards the hook on the wall where they had put your belongings, then taking cover too.

“Oi” the deputy cried and jumped up, alarming his sleeping colleague who got to his feet as well. As they slowly edged closer, Wade left his cover and finished them off with a precise shot each. You almost smiled to yourself. That it had been that easy… Slowly, the outlaw approached the bodies and took the key from one of them, tossing it to you while he occupied himself with the chest that contained your loot. Not even throwing as much as a glance at your personal things, you joined him, starting to load some of the valuables into your own pockets and bags. The door opened and another deputy tried to storm in but got shot dead right in the doorframe.

“You scared I’ll break my word?” ignoring him, you continued until you had no more room left, then retrieved your things to pack even more silver. “Got everything?” he asked once the chest was empty and you nodded. “Good. We’ll go out the window” he pointed his gun at it and after hurrying over you threw a glance out to see if the coast was clear, then opened the window and climbed out of it, followed by your ‘business partner’.

“You two! Stay right where you are!” you suddenly heard a voice, directly followed by a shot and a pain went through your shoulder. Behind you, Wade had climbed outside too and pushed you along, aiming some shots at the man near the door outside the sheriff’s office

“Come” he almost started pulling you around the corner “Is your gun loaded?”

“Yeah” you muttered and without another word he went for it, taking it out and waiting a few seconds before he gave a nod and dragged you along again, through alleys and around corners until you reached the outskirts of the town.

“Boss that you?”

“Yeah” finally, he let go of you a little, now only nudging you towards one of the horses.

“Whos’ that? What happened here?”

“Small change of plans. Found me a partner” he said with a little wink as he mounted and then helped you onto the horse as well, explaining his men they had to ride around back to meet at the point you were supposed to meet your own people. It was obvious the men didn’t like it but he was the boss, so they complied anyways. “You got hurt?” he asked as you were riding.

“I think he shot me. My shoulder” you replied with a grunt.

“We’ll look at it later on” this time you just nodded, holding to him a bit tighter. You were real glad that your gang had already noticed that something was going on and were gathered at the meeting point

“What’s going on? Who are they?”

“Change of plans” you replied with a smirk “Had to collaborate” carefully, you slid off the horse’s back and approached your own.

“What about our money?” O’Riley asked “We gotta share it now?”

“I’m sure we’ll find a solution everyone’s happy with” Wade promised, only leading O’Riley to aim a rifle at him.

“I know one for sure” by now, also some men of Wade’s gang had their weapons out and seemed eager to shoot.

“Leave it be” you said, grabbing the barrel and pushing it down and luckily also the outlaw boss told his crew to back down. “We better leave – everyone’s gonna be after us and I don’t wanna get hit again” you mounted your horse and moved it closer to the other group of outlaws.

“The lady’s right. Let’s not have a go at each other while the law’s still close” still not looking happy, the belligerent men put their weapons away and followed yours and Wade’s lead.

After riding for a little more than one and half an hour, you stopped to split up the money and you could have a better look at your shoulder.

“Need help?” Wade asked as you tried to slip out of your blouse and shaking your head, you just glared at him. Once the wound lay open, you had to realize that you couldn’t treat it by yourself since it was on the back of your shoulder. And it even looked like it wasn’t just a graze wound but that the bullet still was inside you.

“Fuck this” you muttered, calling out to your female gangmember to come and help you. Before she could react, Ben Wade already knelt down behind you to examine the wound.

“Bullet’s still inside”

“Guess what, I noticed this already” you huffed as your friend hurried over with the emergency medical set. Wade instantly took the lead, taking out some tools and instructing your friend what to do without even leaving you a choice if you wanted his help or not. Oh well, somehow you didn’t really mind as long as that blasted bullet got out! Luckily the whole ordeal was over quickly and you even got a bandage applied by the male outlaw. “Thank you” you muttered when he was done, feeling grateful for the help

“Don’t mention it” he winked at you and placed a short peck on your cheek. You glared at him and wanted to scold him who he thought he was but you didn’t find the words. Because with horror you realized that you actually didn’t mind too much. He smirked and then walked away, ordering one of his gang members to calm down when they wanted to have the money right away. Your friend helped you up, asking if you were okay. You only nodded and joined the others again. After all, the sooner the money was distributed the sooner you could part ways.

“That’s all?” one of the outlaws sounded disappointed when they saw the contents of Wade’s bag

“No well, dear (Y/N) did take a bagful too” he said, glancing at you. With a nod you went to get the bag you had, wondering if maybe he had forgotten that you also put a part of it into your pockets. Once all the silver was on a pile, one of Wade’s gang pulled out his revolver and pointed it at you

“I say we shoot them all and take everything” also your own gang members pulled out their guns. You just stood there in disbelief. The man opposite didn’t look like he’d dare to kill you without permission of his boss so your glance fell to Ben Wade, whose face was like stone. Then suddenly he whipped around and shot his own man in the stomach. You fought back a wince but failed.

“I already said the loot will be shared” he announced and gave the rest of his gang a hard glare. “If any of you thinks they want more metal you gotta make do with some lead. Understood?” the men sure didn’t like it but they agreed and everyone put the guns away. Wade insisted that each gang got half of it, much to the dismay of his men but no matter what arguments they brought, their boss insisted on a fair share for everyone. After all, so he said, he couldn’t have done it without you. And yet, he had been the one who did the most work. But you were so clever to shut your mouth and not say a thing, only to your defense. Grumpily, some members of Wade’s outfit packed their half, spat next to yours and began loading it onto the horses. O’Riley too knelt down and stowed your share.

“Well” you said, turning to the outlaw boss

“Yeah. Guess our ways part here. Unless you wanna come with us for a while” there was a sparkle in his eyes but you shook your head.

“Scared I’d rob you? Now, after everything I’ve done for you?”

“No” you crossed your arms “I just can take care of myself”

“Yeah. Guess that two extra pocket full will help” he whispered, making you look at him in shock “You think I’m blind or forgot you stuffed your pockets at the jail?”

“No I… But… if you knew… why didn’t you say something and have me add it to the pile too” he chuckled

“Oh well, thought you might need it” his hands came to your waist but somehow you didn’t dare to push him away “Do me a favor though. If there’s a chance use the money to settle down somewhere and live an honest life”

“Why? I mean what do you care?” he raised an eyebrow

“You rather I tell my men I just found some silver in your pocket right now?” you glared at him and he chuckled in amusement “No worries. Just got a bullet out your back. Would have wasted my time if I tell ‘em and let ‘em shoot you” he cleared his throat “Anyways, you could have an easier life. A comfortable one and I’d hate to see you getting hurt. I can’t always be there to protect my business partner”

“Oh ha-ha really funny” you couldn’t help a chuckle. His hands moved slightly up and suddenly he leant closer, as if to kiss you. To your surprise he stopped half an inch in front of your own lips, waiting until you gave him a go ahead and maybe this was the reason you finally did close the distance to kiss him. One of his hands moved to the back of your head, slightly pulling you closer and deepening the kiss. Suddenly he pulled away and let go of you

“Stay safe” he winked at you, walked away to his horse and mounted “And thank you again for your help, (Y/N). Greatly appreciated and enjoyed the collaboration. Ya.” as he rode on, his gang did the same and you watched them leaving. Your thoughts were spinning. No, the robbery had not gone according to plan. But maybe, just maybe you had won something better than just the silver in the office. An accomplice. A friend. Or maybe more…
