Shaw’s Birthday Poem (2023)
Happy birthday to you, Shaw! You're full of surprises and you always leave me in awe of what "good ideas" and shenanigans you'll do next. You're down to have fun and cause some trouble along the way. You're confident in yourself and don't need to care what others say. You know yourself best. You're a rascal, such a tease, and a brat in a younger brother kind of way, but you have a caring heart. I hope you know that. You follow your heart and march to your own beat. You're the coolest dude on a skateboard out on the streets.
If life is a flower and youth is the nectar, I hope you'll enjoy the sweetness of youth. I look forward to seeing you mature and bloom. Just keep being true to yourself. You're already the coolest dude in any room. Happy birthday Shaw! Thanks for getting me through any crisis and sticking with me through thick and thin. Life may take us by suprise and plans may change at any time, but we'll adapt. We'll get back up even though we may fall. Thank you for pushing me and guiding me through it all. You know your way out of whatever situation you're in so I'll follow and accompany you from one wild and crazy adventure to the next.

okay well now I have to talk about it... GO AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I could put on a tier shows that have changed my life this would definitely be in S class. there are some scenes that I rewatch that are so touching that it makes me feel so much warmth and love in what the actors, the screenwriters, the director is trying to portray and not to be a drunk girl talking to you in the bathroom of a bar but that's so beautiful... the scene where jianjian asks to sleep with lingxiao because she knows he suffers from insomnia was so moving. the underlying message was so apparent to me and it wasn't just a matter of them becoming a couple, becoming more romantic, having their relationship progress further. to an extent yes, that was the point but MORE THAN THAT it was to showcase how deeply jianjian cares for lingxiao. not just him as her boyfriend, but him as her family. she knew that he was struggling alone for so long and that he relies on her for comfort, but she wasn't just a run of the mill character the male lead turns to and he's fixed. she knew that he had wounds that were forged through years of neglect and abuse, and when he was hurting, when he was fighting, when he was scared... she gave him the one thing that he never got, which was a proper night of sleep. so she laid beside him and said "don't think about anything, even if a comet were to hit the earth tomorrow you still have to sleep well tonight. I will be by your side, so sleep." I CRODE!!!!!! I AM STILL CRODING AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.... this scene was so personal, so private, so unbelievably intimate. I watch this cut and my eyes well up in tears. this? THIS was love. this was the clearest display of love in a drama I have ever seen in my fucking life and I know I'm batshit crazy but I can't help it when it comes to this show...

Final Back from the Brink thoughts:
Extreme love for how it handled the FL. Yanhui was completely respected all the way thru. Her trauma and grief were respected, her agency was respected, her power was respected, and she remained the LEAD until the end. Other shows take note.
The show had a long stretch of fairly boring eps that being said, and I never warmed up to Bai Xiaosheng even if he did get marginally less irritating. I never forgave Lingxiao either.
The writing was... decent but not super consistent, and the side characters were fairly lacking. The villain was just there. The romance is cute, but not something that is going to stick with me. Tianyao wasn't really fleshed out that much, which could be part of the issue with that. Actor was cute though.
The humor pretty much went past me 90% of the time. I feel most xianxia is written so teenage girls can enjoy it, but this one felt more like it was written exclusively for them at times. Which is not bad!! But I'm not a teenage girl lol.
Once I got in the final fifteen or so episodes, I did zip through it pretty quickly, but those episodes from after they leave Yongzhou to when they get married are… tough.
Also because for like ten episodes all the ML does is look sad and go '…Yanhui :(' Peak malewife, but when all the male character screentime was going to BXS in the meantime, I was like can this please end lol.
So I would recommend Back from the Brink if you need something to pass the time, if you want an easy watch, or if you want a really good female lead that's respected by the narrative. It might be worth it for that last point alone.
Zhou Ye is really charming in the role (gay people will know her as Gu Xiang from Word of Honor), and she has an easy camaraderie and chemistry with pretty much anyone she interacts with.
Also happy ending, which I appreciated, even though I was kind of like 'wow how did that happen' lol.
Now to catch up on The Longest Promise. :)
