And the results are in! I'm pleased to say that, despite apparently being the most unbelievable, the xianxia CIA jumpscares and years of painstaking leaf cutting are very, very real.

The actual fake answer was conning an immortal into trading his incredibly powerful sword for knockoff jewelry, though I fully believe that is some shit Xi Ping would try if given the opportunity. Congrats to @torterrachampion and @souridealist for being very correct in the notes :).

(The name Tai Sui comes up in a lot of different contexts in this novel, so just trust me when I say that in this particular scene, it refers to someone presenting himself as an "evil god"):
