"Three Years in the "Pen"," Owen Sound Sun. September 6, 1912. Page 4. ---- A man named Reginald Holmes of town, who was working with the telephone gang at Flesherton was caught recently in the act of rifling County Constable Cook's cellar at Cevlon of butter and ham. Magistrate McMullen sent him here for trial. He came before the County Judge on Friday last and was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary. This was a pretty stiff sentence, but was given for the man's own benefit in order that he might rid himself of certain deep-seated habits and learn a trade.
[AL: The judge's logic is somewhat bizarre - Holmes was clearly employed at time of robbery, was formerly a barber and saloon keeper, and was also 44 - unlikely to learn a trade quickly at the penitentiary. That is, if the reporting is even accurate about the judges' words. Holmes was convict #F-451 at Kingston Penitentiary. He was reported once but had this cancelled for some reason - he was paroled in October 1914.]

I may just do an offshoot verse for a new/old revamped pairing that popped up. I've not yet used Mr. Depp as an FC but I thought it was time. @aristobun I hope you don't mind! <3
I introduce to you Mr. & Mrs. Chanter of the Sleeping on the Blacktop verse.
Tumblr media
Josiah Eaton Chanter
DOB: 7/22/4-
POB: Copperline County
Nickname(s): Joe, Big Brother, No Good Nickajack.
Occupation: Telephone lineman ( during the day it's amazing what you hear on that line when you're hooked in. ) / Law Abiding Sophisticate after dark.
Mary Colleen Grey-Chanter
DOB: 12/7/4-
POB: Copperline County, *throw a dart and there it is*
Nicknames: Mack, Col, and most notably The Witch to those that don't like her.
Occupation: School teacher ( formerly second grade at Copperline Community School ) now she spends her time tending the back acer of garden and feeding the chickens. When she's not driving the Black Beast that's parked under a tarp by the corn crib when aiding the Law Abiding Sophisticate after dark.
. In their off time the Chanter's have a very successful dairy and pumpkin farm.
. They don't have children of their own, they have a large immediate and extended family and their place is always the one hosting all holidays and gatherings of any kind.
. Joe and Mary have an agreement, he goes high meaning anything with heights is his and she goes low meaning if it's a small, tight or anything to do with water it's hers.
. Nobody in the town of Copperline is actually sure how long they've lived there. They never seem to age.

A man was arrested and charged with misdemeanor deadly conduct after Needleton police said he threatened a lineman working to restore power in Fort Bend County.
Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia said linemen at one camp were forced to relocate after being threatened with a drive-by shooting. He said others have been subject to individual threats of violence. "All that does is make it harder and longer to get your lights back on," Garcia said.
Ed Allen with IBEW Local 66 said a crew out in Sugar Land told him a man across the street holding an AK-47 was "menacing" them. "We've had guys have guns pulled on them, we've had guys had rocks picked up and slung at them, we've had people brandishing AK-47s and it needs to stop," Allen said. "Please God, stop harassing these people."
Allen said a crew from Kansas working in Kingwood was trying to eat lunch when people pulled up, yelling at them, calling them lazy and saying they didn't deserve to eat. He said several companies said that if the harassment doesn't stop, they're going to "get in their trucks and drive off."
A Baytown woman is also accused of making terroristic threats against CenterPoint's CEO.

Glenn Thompkins received the Glenn Davis Award for high school football excellence
Tumblr media
Glenn Thompkins, the star quarterback of Rialto Eisenhower High, made headlines once again as he was honored with the prestigious Glenn Davis Award for his outstanding performance in Southern California's high school football scene. Just two days after leading his team to victory in the Southern Section Division I championship, Thompkins received this coveted award during a ceremony held in Riverside.
Named after the esteemed Heisman Trophy winner who attended Army and Bonita High in La Verne, the Glenn Davis Award is presented annually by The Times. It serves as a testament to the remarkable talent and dedication demonstrated by high school football players in the region.
At the age of 17, Thompkins, a three-year starter for the Eagles, showcased his versatility and prowess on the field throughout the season. With an impressive 14-0 record under his leadership, the team secured their championship title by defeating Santa Ana Mater Dei with a resounding score of 56-3 at Anaheim Stadium. In this decisive game, Thompkins exhibited his multifaceted skill set by throwing for 174 yards and three touchdowns, along with rushing for 71 yards and an additional touchdown. Not content with just offensive contributions, he also made significant defensive plays, breaking up several passes and returning two punts.
Tom Hoak, Eisenhower’s coach, attributed the team's undefeated season to Thompkins, emphasizing his versatility and ability to excel in any position on the field. Standing at 5 feet 9 inches and weighing 163 pounds, Thompkins amassed impressive statistics throughout the season, passing for 1,214 yards and rushing for 717. Additionally, he showcased his defensive prowess by starting in various positions, including inside linebacker and end.
Thompkins' remarkable performance on the field has garnered attention from numerous colleges and universities, with notable institutions such as Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Kansas vying for his talents. However, it is widely anticipated that Thompkins will sign with UCLA, where he is expected to continue his football career at the collegiate level.

Republicans Think the Idea People Should Be Allowed to Drink Water Is "Woke"
The lawsuit also comes after a deadly heat wave wracked the state last month, resulting in a public health crisis, the deaths of 11 people between the ages of 60 and 80 in Webb County since the bill was signed, and a surge in emergency department visits related to the record-breaking, 100-degree temperatures. In Texas prison facilities without air conditioning, at least nine incarcerated people, including two men in their 30s, died last month from heart attacks or unknown causes. Another harrowing incident saw a teen and his stepfather die after the 14-year-old lost consciousness during a hike in Big Bend National Park and the stepfather crashed his car while racing to find help. Plus, at least four workers have died in the state after collapsing in three-digit heat, the Texas Observer reports: a Dallas post office worker, an East Texas utility lineman and two Houston construction workers.

i understand that "wichita lineman" by glen campbell, the pristine 1973 country-pop hit, is supposed to be a poetic blue collar love song but to ME it is about a garden variety working man so deeply engaged in a fundamental-but-invisible system that connects a vast society thats its given him deep occult knowledge of the world, and he chooses to delight privately, under the big bright sky of his home county, in his own mind, without sharing it with any other soul. so basically the same thing

Frederick Wayman "Duke" Slater, buried at Mount Glenwood Memory Gardens South, had an incredible life.
He was a star football player for Clinton High School in Iowa from 1913 to 1915, and for the University of Iowa from 1918 to 1921. He became just the sixth black player to be named All-American. Playing at tackle, he was nigh unstoppable, even though he was routinely double-teamed. Knute Rockne said, "This fellow Slater just about beat my team single-handed in the only contest we lost."
Oh yeah, and he did almost all of it without a helmet, only starting to wear one in his senior year of college.
In 1922, he became the first black lineman in the NFL. Playing alongside Jim Thorpe on the Rock Island Independents, the team only lost two games of his first season, one of which Slater was benched for, since the NFL had a "gentlemen's agreement" not to put black players in for games held in Missouri. When he did play, it was routinely for all 60 minutes of the game.
He stayed in the NFL for ten seasons, being named to all-pro teams in seven of them. After retiring, he organized and coached several all-African-American teams, as the NFL didn't hire any black players from 1934 to 1945.
As careers go, that would already be impressive, but football was only the first phase. He earned a law degree in 1928, while still playing in the NFL. He was a practicing lawyer in Chicago, and in 1948 was elected to the Cook County Municipal Court. He was the first African-American judge on the Cook County Superior Court, and later served on the Circuit Court of Cook County.
On YouTube, Legal Eagle likes to tell lawyers not to enter the well of the court without permission, "or the bailiff will tackle you." This is one case where you'd better hope the bailiff gets to you before the judge does.
