spotting ai generated art - part 2

hi everybody! i'm here to moan and complain about generative ai again... sigh. here's part 1, about ai generared art by chatgpt.

today's protagonist will be google's gemini ai assistant, which i've just found out is able to create art. as always, i'm doing this for illustrative purposes, please refrain from using any ai softwares!

now, gemini allows for pretty much any kind of artwork to be generated. i'll ask to create a sunset on the beach done in watercolours:

thank you gemini! that's a pretty palette, not going to lie. can this software also create images of people? of course it can. and what i've found is that it's also very accurate: no extra fingers, lines being weird or whatnot. i'll ask to generate a portrait of pedro, both in pencil and watercolor:

okay, first of all, just like the last time with chatgpt: who is this? it looks like pedro but it isn't...? i don't know, it rubs me the wrong way. and just to be clear, i haven't put in any original images of pedro to alterate, the software is creating these by itself.

let's try something else, something more complicated. i want to see what pedro could look like in that movie about a cellist:

... if these look familiar it's because they are. i've seen worse, and by worse i mean images of sexual nature that i could very well recreate, at least to make you see how far this can go. i honestly don't even feel comfortable writing the prompt, let alone let the app generate an image.

"but valentina! this artist is showing me their process, this can't be ai!" and that's exactly where we need to look! i've said it before, but no process guarantees you that a work is completely human made. what i've found in common, though, is the defensiveness, the concealment. these posts are usually followed by an extensively detailed description of their process, thoughts and emotions. other signs to look for might be:

- the image looks *too* clean. let's take the last two pictures as an example. yes, it might seem like a loose digital watercolour piece, but if so, how is the cello so perfectly detailed? how do his curls look so perfect and defined?

- lines look weird, inconsistent, shaky or trembling. look for these especially in an initial sketch. a sketch is exactly that, it's supposed to be loose and relaxed, you're getting your idea out. if lines look odd, they start somewhere and end weirdly, elements get confused... that's usually a telltale sign.

- expanding the previous point, look for the details. i'll use this picture as an example:

be careful about very small things: her shoulder dips weirdly, there's a line on her neck that's supposed to be hair, but it isn't. the inner corner of her eye fuses with the pupil, so does the hair with her ear. this is the stuff ai usually gets wrong, hair, shadows, small particulars. a curl might take a weird shape, a shoulder, an arm or a shadow might merge with the background.

- the amount of work that's being posted. this obviously goes for fanfics too, and it's usually the most obvious and known sign, but still. the stuff i've shown you before, if done properly, would take at least a day and a half, probably more - and i say this as someone who's been told is very quick when drawing. if you see that a certain piece took 12 hours, and the next took 10 and so on, make sure the time adds up, it often doesn't.

now, the purpose of this post was to show you that any image you might see in this style is created by ai. if you're still unsure, there's this website that i've found pretty reliable when it comes to spotting ai generated art (it also tells you which technology was used), or, and that's what i usually suggest, ask an artist! you're more than welcome to come to me. <3 ai is getting increasingly more difficult to spot, what might seem obvious to some might not be for others, and that's okay! that's the whole reason why i try to spread awareness with posts like this. i would love for my socials to be a place where people only find entertainment, something (hopefully) nice to look at, but when this is what i was faced with, i got so pissed off i couldn't keep quiet anymore:

if you want to use ai, fine, i know i can't stop you. but lying so blatantly? mocking? fooling the ones who support you? that's where i draw the line. people just don't see nor understand the dangers of gen ai and therefore won't stop what using it. what i can do, though, is warn and educate whoever this post will reach.

behind every artistic product (writing, painting, sculpting, video making, animation etc) there's research, that's the most important part. don't let artificial intelligence deprive you of the pleasure of research, don't settle for a stale and stolen result. hayao miyazaki said: "to be an animator you have to love life".
