You're a mean one, Mr. Coulter
Tumblr media
Pairing: Eric x reader
Word count: 1073
Summary: You and Eric are known for your banter: some would call it a rivalry, others sexual tension. Either way, this "push and pull" between the two of you ends thanks to an unexpected encounter at a Christmas party as well as a bit of alcohol.
Inspired by the song "You're a mean one, Mr. grinch" by Lindsay Stirling featuring Sabrina Carpenter
LINK- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQb0DJZLhRM
A/N: I know that Eric's surname was never mentioned in the books, but it fitted so well that I couldn't resist ;)
~~~~
The whole pit as well as the clubs had been decorated with Christmas ornaments: from little elves to festively decorated trees, paying special detail to the mistletoe branches scattered in the doorways waiting for two unsuspecting sweethearts or just two unfortunate people to stand under them.
It was your third Christmas in a new faction and the first one as a leader. After passing through initiation, a leadership position was offered to you, which you declined as you felt too unprepared and with more room for improvement, much to Max's dismay. Since then, two years had passed and you had taught new initiates, gone to missions to control de factionless and even went outside the fence.
As you had come back from that mission, the offer was brought up to you again, and this time you accepted it, becoming one of the youngest leaders alongside Eric or, as you called him, "The pain on everyone's ass".
His reputation as the worst leader to have as instructor showed during your initiation, as he made it his duty to personally put you through living hell, even going as far as to give you private lessons because 'he saw your potential'...Yeah, your potential for being a new victim of his ways.
Now, as you stood beside him proudly in meetings and dared to sass him back, your relationship had become more of banter between enemies: every time he made a nasty comment, you were ready with a comeback, making all the other leaders or anyone near you sigh in exasperation at your battle of wits, even though most would say that it was more of a flirting.
As you entered the club, you were quickly met with a strong scent of alcohol, sweat and loud music: bodies against each other, drunk people screaming Merry Christmas to your ear, and people making out in the club's corners. You sat on the only available stool and asked for a drink, unaware of who was sitting beside you "Well, if it isn't our lovely new leader (Y/N)" You sighed as you recognised his voice "If it isn't the lovely-sorry, did I say lovely? I meant deadly- Eric, my favourite pain in the ass" "You know I am" He smirked "In your dreams" You shot back, downing the drink "So, what are you doing you doing in a place like this" You signalled the dancefloor "Ah, starting with the pickup lines?" He downed his drink as well and inched closer, making you gulp "I never took you for someone who would fall so easily to my charms" He smiled proudly, making you roll your eyes and inching closer as well, your noses almost touching "Maybe you'll have to try harder" You told him, for only the two of you to hear "Maybe I will" With that, he left the stool, leaving you lightheaded from the previous exchange.
After your conversation, Eric decided to get lost in the crowd, hoping you would follow him. Were you always this cute? In all honesty, he had noticed you after defeating one of the top initiates: your hair had been damped with sweat, your cheeks were red from exhaustion and you looked absolutely stunning. That's how he had ended up offering you private training lessons, even though you didn't need them, just to see your pretty face for his eyes to see only. He pushed you to your limits, trying to make you hate him so he could forget about his feelings, the rules stated that initiates and mentors couldn't have any kind of romantic relationship. But when you became a leader and started talking more and more to him, he got to know your intelligence and how your courage was not mere talk as you fought to protect your comrades from the Factionless.
Then he saw you leave the stool, smirking to himself in pure delight. He knew it was time to take some action, this game of cat and mouse was starting to get too borung.
In all honesty, Eric was hot, or was it the alcohol speaking? No, all those exchanges always had some flirtatious remark or tone in it, and you would often find yourself getting lost looking at his eyes, smile, arms, back...Get a grip (Y/N), he was a dick to you during initiation! But it was not only his physical appearance, it was his prideful attitude, his wit, how he cared about the faction and, in some way, his cold demeanour had become attractive to you.
Leaving the stool as well, you went to catch some air, it started to feel a little too hot in here. As you made your way to the exit, a hand caught your arm, coming face to face with the one who had occupied your thoughts for a while "Haven't seen you in a while" You said sarcastically, making Eric roll your eyes "Stop playing around, I know you like me" "Oh yeah? And what does make you think that way?" Crossing your arms, you lifted your chin proudly to meet his eyes, those stone cold eyes that, more often not, plagued your daydreams.
The staring match only lasted for a few seconds, yet it felt like minutes: the intensity of the situation, the booze flowing through your veins, the hot environment, it was way to tempting for Eric to kiss you "Nu-uh, you said that you would try harder" Your finger rested on his lips, making it even more tense. Eric grunted, earning a soft chuckle from your lips as a signal of triumph "Now you're not that cocky, aren't-" You yelped as Eric's arms snaked around your waist, pulling you to him "Is hard enough, princess?" He whispered in your ear, making you moan slightly due to the closeness.
As if on cue, the DJ decided to play a more seductive song, making Eric drag you to the middle of the dancefloor. You swayed your bodies to the music, Eric even twirling you around in a couple of ocasions, making you laugh in surprise "Do you hear that? 'Cuddly as a cactus', was this song written about you or something?" You laughed, Eric even chuckling a bit at that one "Don't push your luck, (Y/N), I might bite" He spanked your rear, earning a sigh from you as you tried to conceal it by biting your lip "You're a mean one, mr.Coulter...But how good it feels that you are so bad" you purred, before Eric connected your lips with his sensually as the final notes of the song played in the background.
The party was long forgotten as Eric took you by the hand and ran together towards his apartment in the upper floors of Dauntless.
So much for a Christmas miracle huh?
Did u like Bridgerton?? I didn’t much like the main characters/plot but I really loved the side characters especially Eloise and Penelope. I’m actually thinking of reading the books bc I’ve decided to read more romance in 2020
Hmm, “like”.  Did I “like” Bridgerton.
“Like” is such a strong word, you know?
I like it for what it is, which is a trashy smutty bodice ripper.  I like it in the same way I like Johanna Lindsay and Catherine Coulter novels (which Julia Quinn owes a LOT too, they were doing books for each fictional family member LONG before she was, I don’t like this assumption I’ve seen that Julia Quinn started the romance version of the MCU, no no no, that was Johanna and Catherine).
I don’t like putting it alongside “North and South” and “Pride and Prejudice” (which is why I anally refuse to reblog gifsets that put them all together) because it’s an entirely different animal.  (I can’t tell you how annoyed I was when Eloise asked how women came to be with child--regency/Georgian/Victorian women knew about sex, they just didn’t talk about it. I forgave it more when I realized the series was based on bodice rippers)
But taking all that aside...it is wildly fun.  I love the diverse cast of characters, (though I WISH they hadn’t shoehorned in an “explanation” for the diversity, it just brought up a lot of strange questions about the world-building and in my view, it’s just better to have diverse characters and then not explain it. The world is a fantasy, let us live in the fantasy without trying to explain it) I LOVE that Julie Andrews narrates it, I love that it feels like a regency knockoff of Gossip Girls, and I find it utterly diverting.
I like the mains fine, though I’ll admit it’s mainly because Simon is very, VERY pretty.  Definitely more invested in Eloise, Penelope, and Marina’s storylines.  (Though it seems a lot of people hate Marina, which surprised me...she is one of my favorite characters)
I wholly support reading more romance in 2021!  (I’m assuming you meant 2021?)  Let me or @givemeunicorns know if you need any rec’s.
in case u care, i did look up what historical romances at least mention birth control (list of novels and author’s from this forum discussion, so i imagine i’ll need to look into them more for which are more solid)
the requirement was at least one of the leads actually is concerned about pregnancy at some point and mentions bc, and ideally the heroine is aware its a possibility when having sex before stuff happens. -.- i say ideally cause apparently it was a bit of a dig just to find options with bc mentioned to begin with. i imagine some will be solid though...
Diana Gabaldon (Claire character novel? All their novels tend to address bc)
****Susan Johnson’s “Legendary Lover” (bc, very historically accurate author)
******Susan Johnson “Brazen” (bc, well loved novel)
***Jo Beverely’s Something Wicked
The Duke by Galaen Foley
One Night of Sin by Galaen Foley
One Night with a Prince by Sabrina Jeffries
******Lindsay Chase  “The Oath.” (mentions bc more in depth including advocating for it, heroine with career)
Beyond Seduction by Emma Holly
I Do, I Do, I Do by Maggie Osborne
Candice Hern’s In the Thrill of the Night
Only a Duke Will Do by Sabrina Jeffries (heroine preventing pregnancy)
Mary Jo Putney’s Dancing On the Wind
Lisa Kleypas "Forever, My Love" (I’m relieved Lisa Kleypas is on here cause I do like the novel I’ve read of hers so far, so I’m hopeful since she mentions bc in some of her novels then her novels will be a bit more ‘grounded’ just in general story contraction/character concerns)
Robin Schone (pretty much all their writing) Awaken, My Love
Elizabeth Lowell’s Winter Fire
Hope Tarr’s Vanquished
Lisa Kleypas’ Again the Magic
Mary Jo Putney’s THE ROGUE AND THE RUNAWAY/ANGEL ROGUE
Kate Pearce Antonia's Bargain (condoms, concern to not get pregnant)
Jenny Crusie's novels
Cheryl Holt's novels (withdrawl usually in them)
Robin Schone's Awake, my Love (heroine from the present - not sure if bc is in this but concept of a heroine from the present is intriguing, shaving body hair mentioned)
Elizabeth Chadwick (writing rarely succumbs to cliches regarding characters fitting within tropes, also bc mentioned)
Madness of a Seduced Woman by Susan Fromberg Schaeffer (just generally very fascinating read, well loved)
Lord Harry by Catherine Coulter (*maybe hero concerned with bc - in one of Coulter’s novels anyway though not sure if this one)
Authors who themselves stated they mention bc, prioritize having characters aware, and addressing those concerns in their novels:
Sherry Thomas - https://sherrythomas.com/bookshelf.php (well I’m thrilled, this was one of the authors recommended in general in the genre, the Lady Sherlock writer, and i had a minimum of like 4 books of hers i planned to check out so i’m thrilled they’re less likely to stress me out ToT)
Victoria Dahl - http://www.victoriadahl.com/books.php
#rec list#historical fantasy#rant#note to self#imma be real the discussion mentioned 'more novels nowadays mentioning bc and fuck i hope so'#genuinely be stressin me and i forgot how much it Did stress me when historical stuff has#women fucking a lot but no concern at all for potential kids or dying in childbirth#like. black sails? i tolerate cause they're all pirates and rather well aware women who seem like#even if bc isnt being mentioned on screen they seem at least aware of the risks#and stds are mentioned off hand. and the brothel mentions bc off hand. so i can at least assume the adults are all aware of potential outcom#so i dont really feel Stressed for them?#but fuck i read like 3 historical romances so far#and in the most recent one the heroines mom died giving birth to her#and she has sex for the first time and isnt even aware of what causes pregnancy#thats awful to me. that no one lets her know ahead. that she isn't even aware of the choice shes making.#the only comfort was? shes kinda being self destructive and once TOLD she might get pregnant#she just decides if she dies/has a kid thats her problem. since she assumes the other party wont care about her situation.#which is dark af. but at least it serves to NOT romanticise the bullshit that just happened.#whereas the 1st two novels? fuck. the heroine has sex without being told that it can cause pregnancy#or stds considering all the slutty men in these novels#and then when told they could get pregnant again AFTER (can someone please let them know before???)#then its a little more chill cause they seem happy at the idea of a potential kid. but like. please let them be happy#BEFORE they commit to doing it? please???#like bridgerton was fucked up in this way too#but at least from each character perspective i got it?#daphne Wanted a kid so she wasnt going in avoiding any consequence potential#simon Didnt want kids and didnt think to tell someone who did'nt know how it worked#she fucked up and assaulted him. they luckily had NO kid from the situation#which is good because that wouldve hurt simon even more.#then they didnt try to actually sleep together again until they trusted each other. and both mutually wanted a kid
“SENSE AND SENSIBILITY” (1995) Review
Tumblr media
"SENSE AND SENSIBILITY" (1995) Review The year 1995 saw the beginning of an onslaught of Britain and the United States’ love affair with British author, Jane Austen. A love affair that has not abated after twenty-three (23) years. In 1995, the BBC aired Andrew Davies’ miniseries adaptation of Austen’s most famous novel, ”Pride and Prejudice”. And later that year, Hollywood released its adaptation of another Austen, ”Sense and Sensibility” - which I had just recently watched.
Directed by Ang Lee, ”SENSE AND SENSIBILITY”, starred Emma Thompson (who also wrote the screenplay), Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant. The story centered around Elinor (Thompson) and Marianne (Winslet), two daughters of Mr. Dashwood (Tom Wilkinson) by his second wife (Gemma Jones). They have a younger sister, Margaret (Emilie François), and an older half-brother named John (James Fleet). When their father dies, the family estate passes to John, and the Dashwood women are left in reduced circumstances. The story follows the Dashwood sisters to their new home, a cottage on a distant relative's property (Robert Hardy), where they experience both romance and heartbreak. The contrast between the quiet and sensible Elinor and the extroverted and occasionally impetuous Marianne is eventually resolved as each sister finds love and lasting happiness. This leads some to believe that the story’s title described how Elinor and Marianne find a balance between sense and sensibility in life and love. Producer Lindsay Doran made an excellent choice in selecting Lee to direct the film. First of all, he drew some excellent performances from his cast - especially from Thompson, Winslet, and Rickman. Lee also effectively drew filmgoers back into Regency England without allowing the film to resemble some kind of stiff painting or a museum piece. Although he initially had trouble with dealing with Western-style of filmmaking – especially in dealing with British cast members who questioned his direction and made suggestions regarding shots. He could be rather authoritarian with the cast, especially with Hugh Grant. The actor ended up calling him ”the Brute” behind his back. But Lee and the cast eventually got used to each other. Lee was also responsible for insisting that Thompson play the oldest Dashwood sister. And he Lee ordered Winslet to read poetry and novels from the late 18th century and early 19th century in order to get her to connect to Marianne’s romantic nature. And to give the movie its emotional core, he asked both Thompson and Winslet to room together during production. The two actresses remain close friends to this day. Not only was Lee ably assisted by his superb cast, but also by crew members such as costume designers Jenny Beavan and John Bright, production designer Luciana Arrighi, set decorator Ian Whittaker, art directors Philip Elton and Andrew Sanders; and cinematographer Michael Coulter, whose photography beautifully captured the English countryside in all of its glory. I especially have to give kudos to Coulter’s photography and Arrighi’s production design for a beautiful re-creation of Regency London. I also enjoyed composer Patrick Doyle’s score for the film. His use of John Dowland’s song, "Weep You No More Sad Fountains" as Marianne’s own theme song struck me as very impressive. But I have to especially give kudos to Emma Thompson for her marvelous adaptation of Austen’s novel. It may not have adhered exactly to the novel, but I found it well written, lively and paced just right. With the exception of two performances, I felt more than impressed with the cast. When Ang Lee had signed on as the movie’s director, he immediately suggested that Emma Thompson portray the oldest Dashwood sister, Elinor. Thompson considered herself too old for the role, considering that Elinor was at least 19-20 years old in the novel. But Lee suggested that she increase Elinor’s age to 27 in the screenplay, which would also make her distress at being a spinster easier for contemporary audiences to understand. Frankly, I feel that Lee made a good choice. Emma Thompson gave a superb performance as Elinor Dashwood, whose practical mind led her to act as the family’s de facto leader, following her father’s death. She also brilliantly conveyed Elinor’s emotional nature behind a mask of reticence via her eyes and various expressions. Kate Winslet had no need to be subtle as the more openly emotional Marianne Dashwood. Winslet was at least 20 years old when she filmed ”SENSE AND SENSIBILITY’. Yet, even at that tender age, Winslet proved that she had the talent and acting chops to portray the very complex Marianne. And yet, she managed to convey all aspects of Marianne’s personality – romantic, willful, emotional and sometimes a bit self-involved - with surprising subtlety. I found Alan Rickman impressive as one of the Dashwoods’ new neighbors, the quiet and dependable Colonel Christopher Brandon. I enjoyed the subtle manner in which Rickman expressed Brandon’s reluctance in expressing his love for Marianne, due to her feelings for another man. That other man proved to Greg Wise, who gave a surprisingly effective performance as the dashing, yet rakish John Willoughby. Wise has always struck me as a solid, but not particularly an exceptional actor, but I must admit that I consider Willoughby to be among his best performances. The movie’s supporting cast also included Robert Hardy and the late Elizabeth Spriggs, who gave amusing performances as Sir John Middleton, the Dashwoods’ cousin and benefactor; and Mrs. Jennings, Sir John’s mother-in-law. Gemma Jones was excellent as the emotional and sometimes girlish mother of the Dashwood sisters. I was also impressed by Harriet Walter, who portrayed the sisters’ shrewish sister-in-law, Fanny Dashwood. And Hugh Laurie gave a hilarious performance as the sardonic and long-suffering Mr. Palmer, Mrs. Jennings’ other son-in-law. And I must say that Imogen Stubbs also impressed me by her subtle performance as the cunning and manipulative Lucy Steele, who seemed to have a claim for the same man that Elinor Dashwood longs for. Speaking of Elinor Dashwood’s love, I finally come to the two performances that had failed to impress me. One of them belonged to Hugh Grant. He portrayed Edward Ferrars, one of Fanny Dashwood’s brothers that happened to be in love with Elinor and is claimed by the manipulative Lucy Steele as her fiancé. Remember his charming, yet modest performance in the hit 1994 comedy, "FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL"? Well, his Edward Ferrars turned out to be an early 19th century version of that particular role. Grant simply gave the same performance, but with more stuttering and well . . . the same charm. What had been fresh and original in 1994, ended up as old news a year later in "SENSE AND SENSIBILITY". Fortunately, he managed to create strong chemistry with both Thompson and Emilie François, who portrayed the young Margaret Dashwood. And he managed to inject a good deal of subtle wit into his portrayal of the low-key Edward. But the one performance that really did nothing for me belonged to Imelda Staunton. She portrayed Charlotte Jennings Palmer, Mrs. Jennings’ daughter and Mr. Palmer’s wife. Now I am a fan of Stauton, but I cannot say the same about her portrayal of Charlotte Palmer. I realize that the character was supposed to be annoying, but one could say the same about Sir John and Mrs. Middleton. But whereas I found Robert Hardy and Elizabeth Spriggs’ performances amusing and rather funny at times, Staunton’s slightly over-the-top portrayal of Charlotte Palmer ended up irritating the hell out of me. I understand that Andrew Davies had produced his own version of the Austen novel back in 2008. I cannot deny that the three-part miniseries is first rate. There are two other adaptations of Austen's 1811 novel that I have enjoyed. However, I still believe that this particular version is superior. It came as no surprise to me that it earned seven (7) Academy Award nominations and won one (1) for Thompson’s Adapted Screenplay. ”SENSE AND SENSIBILITY” is one movie I could watch over again without ever getting tired of it.
Do you have any advice for amab people dealing with height dysphoria? I wasn't able to find anything in the FAQ concerning dysphoria resulting from being too tall, and most of the advice I could find via tags was aimed specifically at trans women, but I'm nonbinary so much of it doesn't really work for me... I have a lot of difficulty with height dysphoria since I know that in the end it's the one thing I can never change.
Harper says:
Hey anon! You’re right there about a lack of height dysphoria tips for amab/trans feminine people, so I’ll try my best to make this a fairly comprehensive tip list. (So sorry if some of this isn’t relevant to you!)
From what I can tell, there’s nothing I can find about medically reducing height. HRT doesn’t seem to do much if you have already gone through puberty prior to HRT - the only thing that really reduces height is aging past your twenties. (Like how old people get shorter.)If I might ramble about my own experience as standing at around 6ft tall.
For me, what I’ve found is that it helps most to play into it when I’m out and about, which means putting on an outfit and a Look that shows everyone how gorgeous you are. (I’m being a little corny here I know.) It can help distract you and others from your height if you’re wearing something fantastic - you look good regardless.
This advice here suggests: “horizontal lines, striped clothes, knee-length skirts, tall socks/boots, contrasting colors for shirt and pants, ¾ sleeves, and thick belts will make you look shorter.”
My other method is to look to other tall people in the media/in my life. One way of dealing with dysphoria is to learn how to see your height in more positive ways, to make it work for you and with you. It’s comforting for me to know and see there’s plenty of other women and nonbinary people as tall as and taller than me. A lot of models, supermodels, actors, etc. are tall and wonderful, Gwendoline Christie for example, or agender 6ft 2 model Rain Dove.
Digging around on Reddit led me to some other tips, including one user finding confidence by browsing the Tall subreddit. Someone suggests that it helps them remember that there are plenty of other nonbinary people and women, cis or trans, that would love to be taller - this has certainly been my experience.
Pat Says:
I agree with what Harper said and I would like to add the I’m 5’11 and AMAB non-binary and it took me a long time to be comfortable in my height and what helped was to start separating in my mind the stereotypes that often come with height and how we see someone tall as Masculine and someone short as Feminine. Now I don’t even own a pair of flats I’m always wearing heels of some sort and I love it.
Lee says:
This ask started a transfeminine height dysphoria tag to check out!
People may have height dysphoria because of the association of being tall with being a man, but there are also tall women out there, and non-binary people of every height.
Sadly there aren’t enough tall famous non-binary people to make a list, but here are is a list I gathered of 50 tall women:
