When Ford was preparing the Mustang, it wasn’t quite sure exactly how large the market for it would be - at least, not until the car was production ready. Even before it launched plans were afoot for an upscale Mustang for Lincoln-Mercury - but Lee Iacocca was hesitant to do two cars before the concept was proven. After the smashing debut of the Mustang, however, there was no reason to hold back, and the L-M concept, dubbed the “T-7” during development, became the 1967 #MercuryCougar . Many #Mercury products over the years were warmed up Fords, and the #Cougar was no different, but to differentiate the car L-M manager Paul Lorenz insisted that the #Cougar have it’s own unique styling and body stampings - the uniqueness then, as now, being key to differentiation. The Cougar was a big success, and quickly morphed into two kinds of cars - more overtly muscular models sharing a line with more luxurious ones - straddling the ground between Mustang and Thunderbird. Many sales of Muscle Cougars came at the expense of the Mercury Comet/Cyclone and were sometimes an odd fit in staid #LincolnMercury dealerships, so the emphasis was placed on the luxury Cougars thereafter - although Mercury still offered the #CougarEliminator and big V8s, from the standard 351 up to the 428 and Boss 429 that made the car a street brawler when properly optioned, if a hefty and plush one. As the Mustang got larger and more aggressive looking, so did the Cougar - although sales began to slacken as a result, down 2/3rds from 1967. Many people like the earliest Cougar the best, but the 1969-70 cars, with an almost Buick-like sweep on the bodyside and aggressive looks, are my favorites. The obvious #musclecar cues seemed at odds with Mercury’s ideas for the car, as the brand might have preferred to position it against the then-new Pontiac Grand Prix, but decisions are made long before the cars hit the showroom. Sooooo Funny

About a month ago when my son stopped by to do laundry I shared with him a Lincoln commercial starring Matthew McConaughey. I thought the commercial was soooo cool because it was done in the style of True Detective and it was cooler than cool. I thought it was a good move on Lincoln's part to be part of a cool culture/movement. This morning my son posted this SNL video on my Facebook wall. HELLA funny.
