Rose Main Reading Room, the fourth full length by Peel Dream Magazine, is a lush, inviting headphones record; the kind of album made to accompany city bus rides and rainy-day solo trips to accidental destinations. Chris Cohen Plays Last Show of the Year on Saturday at Rough Trade NYC

In the early 2000s, Chris Cohen was a member of a pair of San Francisco bands, the dreamy, cinematic act the Curtains and indie-rock outfit Deerhoof. But yearning for a different sound, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist decided to start making his own music. He’s since put out three long-players under his name on Captured Tracks. Overgrown Path (stream it here) arrived first, in 2012, and then As if Apart (stream it here) followed in 2016. This past spring, Cohen returned with a self-titled LP (stream it here). “Unassuming. Low-stakes. These are usually low-key disses on a piece of art. It’s like saying, ‘Don’t expect much. It’s just some stuff a person made.’ But, for a specialized few, this is the sweet spot,” says PopMatters. “It’s not going to blow your mind, but it is unequivocally quality work by an extraordinarily skilled artist. Lina Tullgren’s Debut and Next Steps

There is a lot to be said about someone who just tells it like it is. In a realm where sugarcoating can be the norm, artists like Lina Tullgren are a bit refreshing. Ask her if melancholy songs are easier to write. She’ll respond, “Yeah I started writing music because it’s ‘easy.'” Ask her if Wes Anderson was the inspiration for her latest video, “Face Off” and she’ll give a simple but firm, “No.” Ask her about Instagram and she’ll flat out tell you it “isn’t real it’s on your phone.” Read the rest here...
