I totally missed the fact that She Said the Word turned 3 years old on Sunday, and I feel kinda bad. It felt like forgetting my child's birthday, considering how much time and energy I have invested in what is now a nearly half million word series. I would say the lock down era thought game of "what would life look like if Satine had said the word?" kinda grew legs and ran away with me.

Anyway, this story occupies a huge portion of my brain, and I know that's true for lots of others, too. So, to celebrate three full years with this story and family, ask me anything! Whether it's about the story, the writing process, the characters, or where I see them going, I want to talk about it!

wip wednesday on a thursday

Still working on chapter 4 (nearly done), so here's an excerpt to tide y'all over until it's published :)

“Do you know where we’re going?” Korkie asks him later that evening as he brushes his hair back from his face, looking at his father in the mirror. He’s dressed in a smart-yet-casual short sleeved shirt — white with vertical navy and beige stripes — and light blue twill jeans in a tapered fit, with casual sneakers in a blue-grey colour to match.

Obi-Wan glances up at him. “No, I don’t. All your mother told me is that Amis has organised a meal out for your birthday with us, Soniee, Lagos, Anakin and Padmé.” Obi-Wan himself doesn’t keep much in the way of smart clothing, but he does thankfully have a black shirt to match with the dark brown slacks he had worn for the housewarming dinner just a month previous, and a smart-ish chronometer on his wrist. He wears boots similar to the ones that make up the footwear for his regular Jedi attire, but they’re cut off at the ankles. His former padawan had taken Huyang back to the temple some time after lunch, and Obi-Wan had spent the next two hours with Korkie, beginning to teach him the basics of wielding his lightsaber in both its full cross-guard form and its dual wielding stance. He had been pleasantly surprised, and impressed, with how quickly Korkie had adjusted to the lighter weight of the lightsaber, compared to the beskad he had trained with on Mandalore.

Just then, Satine comes out of her bedroom, wearing a light blue floor-length dress that appears to float around her, with a darker blue jacket draped over her shoulders and a black leather purse in her hand. Her heels click on the wooden floor as she approaches them. “Are you ready?”

The men both look at each other, and Korkie shrugs. “I guess so. Where’s Amis? Is he meeting us there?”

Satine nods. “He asked me to drop him off at Lagos and Soniee’s apartment. But he’ll be coming back here tonight.”

They all step out onto the landing platform, the bi-fold doors automatically sliding shut behind them. Korkie whistles appreciatively as a smart black speeder lands at the end of the platform, its doors opening and revealing a plush interior, not visible from the outside due to the tinted windows. “This is a bit swank.”

Satine laughs. “Well, it’s not every day your young man turns twenty.” Korkie grins that familiar lopsided Kryze grin, wrapping his arms around his mother’s slim frame and hugging her tight. She presses a kiss to his cheek, and as they pull away from each other she muses aloud, “You’re all grown up, now. I’d like to think I did a good job.”

“Well, considering the circumstances, I’d have to agree,” Obi-Wan says, one hand rubbing Satine’s shoulders and the other resting on the back of Korkie’s neck.

His son thinks for a moment, and then says quietly, “My first birthday with my dad. That’s something special, in and of itself, I think.” They climb into the speeder, and take their seats as the doors close, the tint on the windows deepening.

Satine opens her purse and pulls out a small ring box. “Here. This is your gift from myself and Bo.”

Korkie takes the small box and flicks it open. Inside is a beskar ring, inlaid with haysian smelt, with a thin band and a wider, round top. (If Obi-Wan recalls correctly, Satine had once told him that such a ring was known as a sovereign ring.) The haysian smelt is embossed in the motif of a lily, the flower that represents Clan Kryze. His son’s eyes widen. “Is this—?”

“Your grandfather’s sovereign ring? Yes,” Satine answers. She looks slightly wistful; Adonai Kryze had been a hard man to please, though Obi-Wan knew that prior to his death he had eventually warmed to the idea of embracing a pacifist stance, to stop Mandalorians from wiping each other out. “After he and your grandmother died, a lot of their possessions at Castle Kryze were sent to me in Sundari. Most I put up for auction — such as my mother’s dresses and jewellery — but I kept my father’s ring, his armour and his beskad.”

“I don’t really remember them,” Korkie says. “They died when I was little, didn’t they?”

Satine nods. “You were only a baby when my mother passed, and you’d just turned one when my father followed her into the manda. We reconciled not long before that day — maybe a month — but he wanted you to have his ring when you turned twenty.”

Korkie removes the ring from its cushioned box and slides it onto his right index finger, testing its weight and the way it conforms to the shape of his finger. Looking up at Satine, he leans in and gives her another hug. “Vor’e, buir.” Satine smiles, smoothing their son’s hair back from his face when they separate.

“So, what did you two get up to, today?” she asks once Korkie has leaned back into his seat once more.

Obi-Wan and Korkie glance at each other. “Oh,” Korkie says awkwardly, “just… this and that.”

His mother’s eyes narrow in suspicion. “Kohav Kryze, you are a terrible liar.”

Korkie winces. “Well, I think the major revelation from a few weeks ago would prove that statement wrong.” But he sighs, folding his arms over his chest. “We, uh, built a lightsaber together with the crystal in my toy tooka. Thanks for not telling me about that, by the way.”

Satine’s eyebrow arches, but she’s unable to hold back a laugh at Korkie’s snarky comment about his kyber crystal. “And where is this lightsaber now, then?”

“It’s in Korkie’s room at the moment,” Obi-Wan says, “but I’ll take it with me to the temple tomorrow and store it in my rooms for safe keeping.”

“What? Why?” Korkie sounds insulted.

Obi-Wan pins him in place with a look. “You need training. I don’t fancy being on the end of your mother’s wrath if you accidentally cut off a limb trying to parry a basic attack.” Korkie pouts, and Obi-Wan is reminded of when Anakin was just a young boy, childishly sulking over not being chosen to travel to the Jedi temple on Ilum for the Gathering as soon as he wanted.

The House Kryze Sigil and Flowers

So I just learned today that we now know House Kryze Sigil.

And this definitely looks like a heraldic flower to me, in fact I'm pretty sure it's this lily like flower Satine Kryze wears in her headdress.

Her flowers were meant to represent native flowers to Mandalore. Her flowers resemble a cross between a pitcher plant and a Calla lily.

The symbol shows the funnel shape of the bloom with the style and stigma at the top. Leaves flank the side of the bloom.

I can't see it as anything else, and given Satine's love of Mandalore's natural life, it's a fitting sigil for the family.

And it's funny, because I thought for a while the symbol between Bo's helmet eyes was the owl's beak, but after looking at it and the sigil, it's not. I think her helmet incorporated the owl and the Kryze stylized flower.

Hi, I am still alive, and I am here ready to bring my dream cast for Visions of Mandalore if it ever gets the chance to become a show or a movie (which will never happen, I know). Anyways, here is the first part of the cast for the Kryze family (ft. Obi Wan)

I know Ewan as Satine's dad may seem criminal since Ewan will forever be known as Obi Wan, but I just can't really picture anyone else playing Duke Adonai because Ewan just resembles him so well.

The next part will include Qui Gon and people from Clan Vizsla, who will be in the next part of the story.

Saw your post about SSTW. I am requesting thoughts about Lily Bo. I don’t care what it is, literally anything you want to talk about regarding her will absolutely make my day.

Man, she has been a fun character to develop and watch grow up.

Fun fact: originally, More Than Blood was going to be about her and the aftermath of the events of SSTW. I'm glad I did what I did with that story (even if I had to let some things die in it), but it still kept the basic principle that Lily is an anxiety ridden mess from being the teenager who [redacted].

She grew a lot in the few months of MTB, and now is finally starting to truly find her feet, realize she can be herself while still fully embracing her family, and is growing close to her mother again, and even closer to her dad.

Which is good, because she's going to end up being a big part of her baby sister's life. While Avi is the polar opposite of Lily in most ways (quiet, reserved, contemplative), they find similar ground, especially as Avi gets older, in their similar feelings of anxiety and imposter syndrome.

Lily will be a huge part of all of her family's lives. She a fabulous auntie, Bo and Tol'ket's kids adore her, her siblings find her to be the very best of confidants and sounding boards.

There's still lots of questions about her I haven't answered and maybe never will, but our wild child has grown into a very cool, altruistic, brilliant, and funny adult....who still can beat Korkie up when the spirit moves her.

A little something I wrote for Bo-Katan Week, day 6:

She sets her helmet down on the control panel. It seems to stare back at her, phantom eyes peering out of the visor. Her own haunted, green eyes. Bo-Katan shakes her head, This trip is getting to her; when was her last decent sleep? Or conversation with an actual being? Luckily, she requires neither. She is just fine with her thoughts, as pulsating and plentiful as the stars ahead.

So when her com beeps, she hesitates to answer.

“Bo-Katan…”

“Bo…”

“Lady Kryze?…”

“Bo-Katan…”

“Bo…”

“Aunt Bo…”

That last one is a cheap shot. That little di’kut...

“What is it, Korkie?” she snaps, unable to ignore him any longer.

There is a long silence and she wonders if she scared him off.

“Well hello to you, too! If you didn’t wish to speak to me, you should’ve never given me your private—”

She softens her voice, just a little. “Hello, Korkie.”

It’s been at least two years since their last contact, she thinks, even longer since he appeared in front of her, travel-worn and weary, out of the blue. It was a shock; she expected him to be dead, certainly not alive and begging for forgiveness. “I must make amends for how I treated you,” he had pleaded, quite pathetically. He hadn’t done anything wrong. Her pain, her guilt, her blunt unveiling of secrets drove him away and she did not deserve forgiveness, from him or herself, she concluded. She knew little about her nephew, but it was at that moment she understood all she needed to. And they were not alike at all.

“What do you want?” She does not intend for it to sound harsh, yet it does. Her expression is far from harsh, though obviously he can’t discern that.

“I…I thought I’d see what you were up to.”

“What are you up to?”

Another long silence. “Nothing much. I got into a bit of trouble recently. Just a brief Imperial entanglement, but all is well now! It’s kind of a funny story, actually—”

She cuts him off, uninterested. “So this isn’t a plea for me to rescue you?” He is in his early twenties now, she realizes. Probably still thinks he’s invincible. She knows she believed the same thing, once.

“Nothing of the sort!” he laughs.

It is not a sound she’s familiar with. She assumes he was once a boy who laughed often, and has learned to do so again. She is stricken with envy over this ability. He’s not a boy anymore, she reminds herself, suddenly feeling old, tired.

“As I said, I’m only checking in on you.”

He is checking in on her? Shouldn't it be the other way around? She feels bad enough this evening, she does not need Korkie reminding her what a horrible aunt she is, too.

“We both want the same thing, Aunt Bo. There’s no need to be strangers. Or enemies.” He laughs again, a nervous tinge to it this time.

The same thing, yet by different means. He can forgive her and call her and act annoyingly cheerful, but they will always butt heads. Just like….

“Perhaps we can meet in person again? When our paths cross, that is. I’m sure they will eventually, especially since—”

“Fine, sure.”

“Wonderful!” he exclaims over some static, “a family reunion!”

The word family does it, sends her over the edge. He’s doing this on purpose, he’s twisting the knife, he’s wounding her from millions of light years away. He can dance around the subject and pretend to care about “Aunt Bo” all he wants, but they both know it was five years ago to the day.

“I’m not stupid, Korkie, I know why you called me, why you chose today. You aren’t as clever as you think.”

A small whimper, barely audible, transmits across the galaxy, to Bo-Katan’s ears. “She’s always on my mind, but today…I wanted to feel closer to her. Through you.”

She sits back, relaxes her hands, which had reflexively curled into tight fists. He isn’t trying to guilt her, or play some cruel game. He doesn’t blame her, not anymore. They have more in common than she assumed; they both still miss her.

A fire rages through Bo-Katan, an ever present one, but the flames rise higher now, threatening to burn unchecked. She wants to smash something, or scream, or at least end the call and never hear his cloying laughter ever again. She doesn’t; she is stronger than that now.

“I’m honored that you would say that.”

“You meant so much to her, you know? I hope you know. Anyway, I won’t push you, but if you have any stories you would like to share, from when you were young kids…it would mean the worlds to me, Aunt Bo.”

Something heavy catches in her throat. She wants to disappear into the stars but she refuses to. She still has work to do.

“Your mother would use her lilies to gather ants. She’d let them crawl onto the petals, and then bring them to a safe place in the gardens. Because she couldn’t bear for them to be stepped on.”

Korkie laughs again, this time accompanied by a sniffle, then another. “Thank you.”

Her nephew, who also lost everything, who still has nothing, seems whole again. Yes, there are pieces missing, but he carries on despite this.

If he could, maybe one day she can, too.

Play-in Game 1: Battle of the Clones - Which one is the goodest boi?

Captain Rex versus Commander Cody. Ok this one is going to be tough because they are both great soliders and such sweethearts. I know they are both fan favorites too so I honestly have no idea which way this will go.

Play-in Game 2: The lesser known Jedi - Which one could mind trick you anytime?

Kit Fisto versus Mace Windu. So I know there are plenty of Kit lovers out there but he doesn’t have a whole lot of screen time and he might be a bit obscure for some. Mace Windu is definitely a badass, but he killed Jango Fett which annoys the hell out of some fans.

Play-in Game 3: They both suck - Who’s going to girlboss their way out of this one?

Bo-Katan Kryze versus Jabba the Hutt. So Bo-Katan sort of redeemed herself (I guess) in The Mandalorian when she helped Din rescue Grogu, but she still has Death Watch Terrorist on her resume so she’s definitely evil. Jabba the Hutt is a crime lord who keeps slaves and condemns people to death for his own amusement, so nothing redeeming about him.

Play-in Game 4: DILF Wars - Which one has won your heart?

Jango Fett versus Bail Organa. Another tough one here. Both have many amazing qualities but they’re fairly different from each other. One is our original kickass Mandalorian bounty hunter who gave us Boba Fett and all of our beloved clones. The other is a suave diplomat who negotiated hard for peace and then raised Leia to be the dynamic leader that she is.

Hey! I loved your Ben nickname analysis, I’ve always wondered where that came from! I was wondering, do you have any thoughts on the dichotomy of Bo Katan and Satine’s names? Like, they’re not remotely similar-sounding and tbh the style of Bo’s seems more like Obi Wan’s name than Satine’s. Just curious!

Oh, thank you! Sometimes, I wonder if people find my analyses detailed to the point of being boring, so when someone asks me for more, I'm elated!! You've made my day! (And I hope you enjoy my conclusion!)

This is something that I’ve always wondered as well. Bo-Katan just doesn't feel like it has the same aristocratic feel that Satine has, and I've always wondered if there's a reason behind their names.

First, I just want to say that I think it's a coincidence that Bo-Katan and Obi-Wan's names are more similar in structure. They come from different planets and different cultures which influence their languages differently. My headcanon for Obi-Wan's name is that Stewjon is basically space Scotland. People are identified by a patronym starting with the prefix "ken" to show their clan or family line. So Obi-Wan is literally "Obi-Wan of Clan Obi" or "Obi-Wan, Son of Obi." In a society like that, "Obi" would probably be a popular first name, so "-Wan" is an additional identifier so that they can keep all of the Obis straight!

But back to our Mandalore sisters:

CW writer Henry Gilroy named Satine but has never mentioned what the inspiration behind that was. He still maintains that it's complete coincidence that she bears the same name as Ewan McGregor's love interest from Moulin Rouge, but even Dave Filoni finds that hard to believe!

Dave Filoni named Bo-Katan as a funny portmanteau of his wife's name and her cat's nickname:

The name "Bo-Katan" was created by Filoni as a nod to his wife's cat. Filoni's wife, Anne, calls the cat "boogie," and Filoni derived "Bo-Katan" from "boogie-cat-Anne."

It might be tempting to say that Dave created Bo-Katan without any thought to the Kryze family (since she was a character in Season 4 before being revealed to be Satine's sister in Season 5). However, Dave said that he always had it in mind that Bo was Satine's sister (however, he opted not to tell George Lucas until after Anna Graves and Katee Sackoff worked together on The Lawless, and George agreed that the two characters would work as sisters). So ... all that is to say that it was Dave's intention to have these two be sisters, in spite of their rather discordant names (and different accents).

So using Mando'a, can we come up with meanings for Satine and Bo-Katan?

As I mentioned in my other post, Satine sounds like the Mando'a word saviin [sah-VEEN], meaning violet. The word sarad [SAH-rad] means flower, so I could see her name having something to do with flowers, which would be appropriate given the Mandalorian lilies that she wears, and considering that flowers so often have a connotation of peace.

How about Bo? I'm playing fast and loose with roots to come up with this, but please consider:

The Mando'a root "bor" is related to words meaning work: - bora [BOH-ra], noun - "job" - borarir [boh-RAH-reer], verb - "to work" - verborir [VAIR-bor-EER], verb - "hire, buy, contract"

And "aka" is related to a whole bunch of fighting words, including: - aka [AH-kah], noun - "mission" - akaan [ah-KAHN] noun - "war" - akaanir [ah-KAH-neer], verb - "to fight"

So how about this?

Let's say the root "bor" contracts to "bo," and that "akatanir" is an older form of the word "akaanir" (which later contracted). Combine them and drop the "ir" verb ending, and you get:

Bo-Katan - "mercenary, warrior" [literally "the war worker," "one whose work is war."]

Huh? Huh?! I kind of like that!

That's not nearly as non-sensical as I though given that I was starting with "boogie-cat-Anne!"

So ... why? Why would their parents have given their girls such different names? (Sidenote: in at least two sources, Dave has used the phrase "when Bo and Satine were six-years-old" to describe a particularly formative experience they had. That implies to me that they're probably twins, which carries its own relevance in the world of Star Wars).

Even though he wasn't mentioned in Clone Wars, we know that Bo and Satine's father, Duke Adonai Kryze, was a great warlord and the leader of Clan Kryze. It doesn't surprise me then that he'd give his daughter a name that means "warrior."

So if that's the case, Satine's name may be more of the outlier, but I think that can be explained as well (though this is more of an assumption than canon). In the Legends Mandalorian culture, there was a clan culture that included a bit of a hierarchy, but it wasn't rigid or defined by class. However, Clone Wars established that the Mandalorians (or at least the New Mandalorians) have an aristocratic class (there's Duke Adonai, Duchess Satine, Lady Bo-Katan, and Prince Tal Merrik, from what we see). Some fans have assumed that the Mandalorian aristocracy came about because some Mandalorians (not necessarily pacifists) were influenced by Core World cultures that also had aristocratic societies.  

In any case, Satine's more aristocratic name could be reflective of the Republic influence that her father had subscribed to, while Bo-Katan's name may reflect his continued commitment to what he saw as "true" Mandalorian culture.

If that's true, it feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Adonai Kryze literally named his twin daughters "war" and "peace" ... and his daughters absolutely lived into those names.
