A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish (2019)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Sometimes people exaggerate and say that trailers give away too much, that from the clips shown, they can tell you what the entire movie will be. When talking about A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish, saying that the advertisements reveal too much is a simple fact. Showing any clips from this teleportation pod experiment gone wrong tells you everything you need to know. It’s a generic Christmas-themed rom-com mashed together with the Cinderella fairytale. You could write this plot in your sleep.
Katherine "Kat" Decker (Laura Marano) dreams of becoming a singer-songwriter. Unfortunately, her father’s recent passing has left her in the care of her evil stepmother, Deidra (Johannah Newmarch) and her stepsisters Joy (Lillian Doucet-Roche) & Grace (Chanelle Peloso). They force Kat to work at a Christmas-themed entertainment park. There, she befriends Dominic "Nick" Wintergarden (Gregg Sulkin). She has no idea he’s the son of a billionaire.
If you weren’t convinced before, this settles it. Cinderella doesn’t work in modern times. Kat has access to the internet, to a friend who is willing to help (Isabella Gomez as Isla), to a cell phone, to school counselors, to the police, etc. There is no reason she couldn't escape the enslavement she suffers under Deidra's rule. Her stepmother and stepsisters are so cartoonishly cruel they even capture Kat being mistreated on film. It would be easy to get sent away to a better home if Kat had any motivation to do so. Or maybe she's just dumb. She’s just a few months away from turning 18 and still she doesn’t understand that her stepmother hates her and that the rest of the family will do all they can to make her miserable. How else can you explain the obvious traps she walks into or her inability to keep secrets from them? I don’t want to blame the victim but at a certain point, it’s you that’s the problem, not them.
This fifth (?!) installment in the A Cinderella Story franchise dispenses away with all the magic normally associated with the fairytale. Consequently, Kat's beautiful dresses are whipped up out of nowhere while the rom-com clichés are taken to the extreme. At its core, Cinderella is about two things: a rags-to-riches story and a couple who fall in love without knowing each others’ identity. As part of the modernization package, Kat and Nick meet well ahead of the "royal ball" but for them not to know each other, neither of them ever sees each other without the costumes they wear at work. I guess you might excuse Kat for not recognizing Nick. He’s got a beard and Santa hat on. How he doesn’t recognize her, I don't know. At least Superman puts on a pair of glasses when disguised as Clark Kent. Kat wears elf ears and a hat. No one in the world wouldn’t recognize her.
Now I get to talk about the musical aspect of this picture. When people aren’t singing, you’ll be so bored you’ll wish a fairy would show up and turn you into a pumpkin just so you wouldn’t have to keep watching. Writer/director Michelle Johnston makes 15 minutes feel like ten times that many. When the music kicks in, you’ll want to be turned into a vegetable to avoid dying of embarrassment for the performers. All the numbers are obviously auto-tuned and badly lip-synched, the lyrics haven’t an ounce of creativity and the choreography makes you wonder how desperate the actors must’ve been to agree to this.
If we went in-depth with every offense this film commits, we’d be here until the stroke of midnight so let’s rapid-fire through a few: the token non-white characters who are only there so the film isn’t as white as a fresh Christmas morning; the nonsensical plan by the villains to take Kat’s place at the ball, the ridiculous final music number - complete with perfectly choreographed, spontaneous dance moves; the picture’s fixation on a snow globe that ultimately serves no purpose; Nick’s useless friends that are only there story-wise to crowbar a third act breakup between him and Kat. I know this movie’s for little girls but there are literally dozens of adaptations of Cinderella out there. You could throw a dart at a board and find a more suitable piece of entertainment. This is 86 minutes of torture. (July 2, 2021)

‘The Office’ Star Angela Kinsey Books First Christmas Movie For Hallmark Channel - Deadline
Tumblr media
The Office star will headline Confessions of a Christmas Letter, which will premiere later this year as part of the network’s 15th Annual Countdown to Christmas programming event.
Kinsey plays Settie Rose, a quirky family matriarch who enters her town’s annual holiday letter-writing contest. But needs help, so she hires struggling novelist Juan (Alec Santos of Sight Unseen) to craft the perfect letter.  When a mix-up leads to the rumor that Juan is engaged to Settie’s daughter Lily (Lillian Doucet-Roche, The Cases of Mystery Lane: Death is Listening), the whole family scrambles to keep up the charade.  As Juan bonds with the Roses and overcomes his writer’s block, Settie learns that embracing her imperfect family is what truly makes her story special.
The movie will also feature a special appearance by Brian Baumgartner, Kinsey’s former The Office co-star.

A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish (2019)
I love the original Cinderella story with Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray, but I thought the rest that I had seen didn't quite live up (sorry Selena). Apparently what was missing was cheesy Christmas shenanigans because I am here for it with this one.
Our Cinderella is Kat Decker (Laura Marano), who will be 18 in 4 months, but until then she is stuck with the "steps," as she calls them. Wicked stepmother Dierdre (Johannah Newmarch), bitchy entitled step-sister Joy (Lillian Doucet-Roche), and dumb step-sister Grace (Chanelle Peloso). Idk if they meant it in the script, but there was almost a redemption arc with Grace. Almost. Anyway, our Prince Charming is one Dominic Wintergarden (Gregg Sulkin). His father Terry Wintergarden (Barclay Hope) throws a Christmas Eve gala every year, but we'll get there.
Kat and Dominic first meet when Kat is being harassed by the steps out shopping and Dominic is with his friends. Kat falls over and Joy's and Grace's Starbucks drinks that they were making Kat hold spilled all over her face. Dominic helped her up. Joy filmed it and Kat went viral. All of Dominic's friends are assholes about it, especially Skyler (Maddie Phillips), a bitchy girl who wants to be with Dominic, but he doesn't like her. Her bestie Ashley (Kiera Klassen) giggles the whole time, while Dominic's friends Jackson (Dejan Loyola) and Noah (Trezzo Mahoro) harass him about not being into Skyler.
Anyway, Kat heads to work at Santaland, where she is promptly scolded by her boss Mr. Mujiza (Garfield Wilson) because his only rules are to be on time and be in costume at all times. Side note- I watch everything with subtitles because I process things more easily visually than auditorily, and once when they said Mujiza, the caption said "McJesus" (captions being wrong is my favorite). Kat's bestie Isla (Isabella Gomez) is also an elf at Santaland, so she covers for Kat and just starts the show without her. While Kat is preparing, she meets the new Santa, who introduces himself as Nick (everybody can tell it's Dominic, come on). There is pretty instant sexual tension with Nick and Kat. Isla refers to him as "Sexy Santa." Isla is my favorite character. So between working as an elf, doing Christmas grams, being tortured by her steps, flirting with Nick, and protecting her dog Bruno from the steps, Kat is pretty busy. Dierdre wants to go to the Gala, and Grace tells her that Jason Decker (Kat's deceased father) was great friends with Mr. Wintergarden, so Dierdre in all her glory sends an email to him about Jason passing and how she and Kat live in the area and blah blah blah. Terry extends two invitations to the Gala, one for Dierdre and one for Kat. Dierdre cons the delivery boy out of a third one for Grace and decides to have Joy pretend to be Kat. But Nick gives real Kat an invitation of her own, so no harm no foul, right? Except Kat is the worst about being sneaky, Dierdre finds the invitation and the dress that Isla made for Kat. She couldn't risk the real Kat being there and ruining her plan to marry the very wealthy Mr. Wintergarden, now could she? So she burned Kat's invitation and Joy took the dress.
Kat finds out who Nick is, so she chickens out on telling him who she really is (remember the Starbucks incident?) but he finds out when he buys a Christmas gram from her to come over and meet his friends. Except his friends are horrible, Kat doesn't even tell him about the burnt invitation before she runs out yelling at him and crying. As she talks to Bruno later that night, she realizes she may have overreacted. Isla convinces her to sneak in dressed as an elf performer, which works, kind of... Dominic does a really great job of putting everyone in their place though. Like, he's not unattractive but I'm not into the baby face, but when he brings out the sass, I can almost get past it.
There's a lot of Christmas cheesiness, but I only had to pause once (when the steps are talking to Mr. Wintergarden). I really loved all of the nods to the original Disney movie of Cinderella (hair and dresses at the gala as one example). Kat's original Christmas song isn't bad, and I enjoyed her performance of it.
Overall, I give it 4 stars.
