I assume it’s bc of the tv show but I’ve seen a couple posts randomly dunking on the last of us but for such dumb reasons. “I want to play lighthearted silly games instead of grimdark ones” “I want to play games that are more inextricable from the video game medium, games that are less cinematic” the good news is that those games exist! the last of us is in fact only two games out of the countless video games out there, so I would recommend not playing them if you don’t want to

you are right, "woke" has truly lost all meaning as a term... one of my new favorite games has a very basic and positive message to it but because the localization inserted some nonsense about a nonbinary character it got labeled as "woke SJW trash" even tho the rest of the script is pretty accurate to the original Japanese

I also saw comments about how just including a gay relationship in this game is "agenda-pushing" like I really don't get that tbqh. it just reminded me of people complaining that the new Zelda game is "woke" because it has a few characters who aren't lily white and Zelda has short hair lmao

I think the reluctance of these folks to see non White people in fantasy content is bc White people want to gatekeep fantasy as a 'White only' genre. Which is funny because White people have no problem reappropriating foreign genre for their own gain 🙃

And I always said that the issue wasn't non White people being shoved in "White people story" because when Black Panther happened their were still mad and were seething about that movie catering to Blacks (but don't you dare saying movies featuring mostly White people are catering to White, it will make you an awful wokester lmao). Whites will always feel entitled for other races to relate to their stories, but never the other way around. There's a post floating around cathblr with Catholics raving about Arabs discovering the Lord of The Ring and enjoying it a lot. And I couldn't help but think: would those catholics turn the favor and rave about an Arab movie with islamist undertones...? 🙃 lmao.... Those people are soooooo transparent 💀

Everything is woke if you try hard enough, anyway. Scrotes are seething because they consider some video game female characters are purposely made ugly (like Aloy from Horizon Dawn. A scrote was coping bc the mocap actress was much more beautiful and he couldn't wrap his hand as of why they would change her face to make her look more 'rough' ...when he's just too stupid to grasp that this choice is actually pretty coherent with the storyline since homegirl is nomad WARRIOR.).

I also remember when they made a revamp of Mortal Kombat chara design and changed characters body proportion to become more realistic, scrotes got mad lmao It's hilarious how they think they're really doing something 'counter-culture' but they only show how porn fried they are. Btw, all those ANTI praising Japan for being anti woke are up to a very hard wake up call. Many japanese celebrities are vocal LGBT+ supporters, a significant amount of online stars are gay/queer (Ryuchell, Peey, Kemio...). Even recently a member of AAA (a famous pop band) came out as gay 😬 there's a huuuuge push for LGBT visibility into the Japan entertainment right now, so it's obvious they have no idea of what they're talking about... Okay, like, Matt’s been in AH videos BEFORE he was even hired. Wasn’t the first Minecraft we saw him in Griffball? And everyone in AH immediately liked him bc he smacked Gavin? Like, we as a community knew axialmatt, and were excited when the guys played one of his maps! And then he and Jeremy (AH fan artist AND fan fiction extraordinaire) get hired to do their DREAM job! And I hate to say a good chunk of the community took a LONG time to warm up to them (especially Matt, but Ray leaving soon after they were hired I think really threw a wrench in things too), but eventually they got comfortable and clicked into their places in AH, and it was like they were there the whole time!

And especially recently, Matt specifically has been KILLING it! He’s so creative, and funny, and his humor is sarcastic and dry, but he’s GENUINELY so kind, you can just tell. Like, this sucks, everyone’s pissed, WB are burning their company to the ground and idk if RT has any way of getting out of there, but they really need to, bc this is only the beginning.

Challenge Accepted and the Randomizers are, imo, the best content in AH right now. I even watched the Raft series, even though I have no interest in that game, bc Matt kept me there! Shark mage was the best! I love the rest of the cast, I really do, but at this point in AH’s life, Matt and Michael are def my fav members. It just sucks, I’m taking it better than when Ray left (I was a damn mess through that;;), but maybe that’s bc he’s still PT? We’ll see how long that lasts, I’ve really been enjoying seeing him in Chilled’s Among Us lobbys, and if he had more time to devote to streaming, he’ll prob hang out with that crowd more, which would be awesome tbh.

Does anyone know if he has a YT VOD channel? I have a thing, I don’t know why, but I don’t like watching livestreams. They make me anxious for whatever reason;; So VODs are a lifesaver for me, so please let me know if you know! 🧡

And yeah, that’s my jumbled thoughts on the matter. WB is ruining RTAH, and it sucks to see, and I really, really, really hope they SOMEHOW get out of that company. Easier said than done, I know, but it just sucks to have had to see all of the obvious change they’ve had to go through since they were put under them, and are still going through. AH cast and content used to be so colorful and bright and happy, but as much as I enjoy how they’ve matured, and still have fun together, the contrast from the past, more care-free AH is drastic. The past however many years, it’s just noticeable how dark their spaces have been, like, it’s kind of dreary looking at them compared to, let’s say, their tiny OG office. Like, that room was always so full of life! And their past few spaces have just been… sad looking.. and also, they’re not quiet about scheduling. Matt and Michael talked about how Sarah had been breathing down their necks for like, half the Wind Waker randomizers bc they were taking too long, and every time they brought it up it bummed because out, bc I HATE they’re being rushed to make content! Idk who thought a Zelda randomizer was going to be less than like, 8 episodes anyway! But that just suggests to me they’re not enjoying playing the game as much as they could be, bc they’re being bitched at about it behind the scenes. Plus other random, too-businesslike things I smell just bc I’m an employee of a big business, and like, I can TELL they don’t have as much freedom as they should have, and it sucks.

like, I really don’t like getting into the “AH was better when it was just the OG cast 😤���, because those people annoy me (I don’t know why they just don’t stop watching if they just complain every video how they hate current AH? But that’s a can of worms I don’t want to open), BUT I do hate what big business has been doing to them, I hope Matt settles into the path that is right for him, the AH members someday gain their freedom back, and WB burns in hell. After seeing more information come out, Big Yikes, looks like RT has been shitty even before WB sunk their claws in. I know back in 2013 they would make shitty, offensive jokes and call people babies for being upset when they were called out on them, but as I said before, one of the biggest things I’m thankful for is the vast majority of them [AH] have matured, and realized slurs aren’t funny. The community still, for the most part, gets on my nerves for MANY reasons, but I never get too into any kind of community anyway (so I can actually enjoy the media I’m consuming). All that being said, this looks like the beginning of a real big garbage fire, and I just hope all the good RT/AH people find their way to a happier life, and all the shitty assholes get what’s coming to them.

Hey, I'm doing good too. Just normal amounts of stressful stuff right now. Just moved to a country I've never been to before but can't complain, things are not as hard as the last time I did this so. The nerve some people have! Haha I know I would be pissed if people were questioning my intelligence like that especially after a couple of drinks in haha. Though I do like taunting people when I play group games, I'll be like "don't need to try that hard guys, you're gonna lose anyway" just to mess with them or just call people sore losers if they accuse me of cheating haha (they're probably right on the accusations tho). People get real mad sometimes it's kinda funny. 😂

Omg literally laughed out loud reading this! Hahaha, how did you manage to fall over a road sign then end up in a ditch? lol omg hope you didn't get hurt too bad 😂 I was trying to downplay my drunken escapades but since you shared yours I should tell you my worst one:

I was at this summer street party at night and got drunk on something made out of tropical herbs and cachaça (which is about 48% alcohol), drank 3 and a half bottles of that like it was apple juice, made friends with a bunch of strangers in a bathroom queue (who tried to talk to me weeks later but I had no idea who they were), had to be held by my best friend while I peed (mostly missing the toilet), fell in the middle of the street and scraped my knee, threatened this boy who was helping me walk and told him not to try anything funny or I would beat him up, then dragged my friends to the beach and left them shortly after to go make out with my ex, came back with lipstick all over my mouth and chin and when my friends asked what I was doing I said I was just talking to my ex and they were like NO YOU WERE NOT, hahaha then I kissed all my girl friends on a dare and we danced under the full moon, then I told my best friend I had to puke so she took me to the ocean but I changed my mind and happened to step on a dead turtle on the way back and started crying bc of it, but last month my best friend told me it was a rock I had stepped on (I believed it was a dead turtle for 7 years!). Had the worst hangover of my life the next day. ✌️✨

Oh I could talk about Dani and Jamie forever I think. I love the beast in the jungle speech too and it's so painful to watch, VP delivered that beautifully, but I have to admit I'm always a crying mess from episode 1 when older Jamie starts reciting that song about being sad while waiting for her lover to return, this show is fucking cruel I hate it and love it at the same time hahaha. I used to draw a lot, really loved doing it when I was a kid as I said before, and all throughout adulthood too but I haven't done that in almost a year now bc I've got a bit of a case of burnout I guess, it just takes a lot of effort to do it when it shouldn't be like that at all. I used to do fanart too, for other fandoms. Even made one for Dani x Jamie but ended up not liking how it turned out haha. I've got a lot of respect for writers and fanfic writers also! Yall can make words make sense in really interesting and beautiful ways, build worlds so enthralling I can see them vividly in my head. Writing is such an incredibly fascinating skill to have! And I guess the most important thing is that we enjoy doing these things right? Even if we think we're not particularly good at it.

I was fine and was just laid laughing while my friend looked down at me and in the most northern accent ever just said "get up you dickhead." and helped me off of the floor and then asked if I was okay... and I was so it was all good!! Haha 😂 I love this drunken story that sounds like one hell of a night and is a roller coaster from start to finish!! I'm sorry you thought you had stood on a dead turtle for 7 years though, someone really should've told you that it was just a rock!! But that sounds like my kind of night!! I love nights like that... stories that will last a life time... the only down side is the hangover... luckily I have only ever had one hang over in my life and it wasn't the morning after the road sign fiasco... I felt surprisingly good the morning after that haha 😂 It's such a good musical it's about Henry VIII wives and I just love everything to do with his wives and that musical is so much fun and actually gives a little insight to the lives the six Tudor queens had away from Henry and with him because at school we're mainly just taught about him which sucks!! Life is a Series of Choices- Chapter One

PLEASE READ: Hey guys! I just wanna write a quick little disclaimer before you guys read this. You may have seen me mention an exciting project on this blog before, and here it is. Disclaimer: THIS CHAPTER IS NOT MY ORIGINAL WORK. A few weeks ago the lovely user @s-m-22 submitted this to me. They gave me their idea for the plot, and what they had written so far, with the intention of me editing what they’d completed and finishing the story. This first chapter is an edited version of what they submitted to me, so I will restate that I am not trying to claim this as my own. The next few chapters, however, will be my own writing. I really love the plot they gave me and am thrilled to have the opportunity to bring it to life! I hope you all enjoy this, and stay tuned for more to come!

Monday started for Melissa like every other day did. She got ready for work, put on her favourite scrubs, some light makeup, and packed her lunch. However, today wouldn’t be a normal day at work. She worked at the Children’s Medical Centre in Dallas; she loved her job, despite the crazy hours and unpredictable nature. Dallas was a far cry from her home in rural Ontario, and took plenty of time to get used to. Between the sweltering heat, the accents, and the sheer size of the city, it was a lot to take in, but she’d grown to love it.That day, some players from the Dallas Stars were coming to the hospital to spend time with some of the patients and their families. It had been all anybody could talk about for the past few weeks, so the halls were bound to be buzzing with excitement. Her best friend Skylar has nearly fainted when she heard the announcement, and went as far as to trade shifts to make sure she’d be working that day. She grew up surrounded by hockey, having multiple friends who played hockey their whole lives. Skylar, like the rest of Dallas, was madly in love with Tyler Seguin. Melissa on the other hand had no particular favourites, but enjoyed watching Benn, Bishop, and Radulov, among others.        

Melissa drove to work, and as she entered the lobby she immediately noticed all of the Dallas Stars signs, along with the victory green and silver balloons scattered around. She made it to floor 3C and made her way over to the nursing station where the rest  of her coworkers were awaiting shift report. Skylar sat next to her, practically bouncing out of her chair with excitement.

“Ok guys,” said her supervisor, interrupting the chatter amongst everyone. “As you all know today is the day the Stars will be visiting. They will be arriving in about two hours so please make sure that after you take care of your patients you help finish setting up the playroom and any other tasks that need to be done. There will be an abundance of media around today, so please ensure that you present yourselves and the hospital in a professional manner. I don’t anticipate this being a problem, but better safe than sorry. If the players need anything please make sure you help them if you’re able to. Alright, I think that’s all, have a good shift everyone!” She stayed behind as everyone else dispersed to tend to patients. Melissa and Skylar walked off towards the playroom, as they wouldn’t be caring for patients until the night shift.

“Oh, I’ll make sure I help Tyler alright. I’ll help him out of his clothes,” whispered Skylar, eliciting an eye roll from Melissa. That didn’t deserve a proper response.

“Remember you have to be professional Skylar. No sneaking off to supply closets, even if it is with Tyler Seguin,” offered Melissa after a moment, a smirk on her face.

“I’ll be the epitome of professionalism, until I get him in my bed. Or I’m in his, makes no difference to me.” Melissa busied herself with helping wherever she was needed, not realizing the players had arrived until she heard a noise behind her, turned, and was suddenly face to face with Jamie Benn himself.

“Uh, hi. Sorry if I scared you. I’m Jamie,” he said as he extended a large hand towards Melissa.

“Hi Jamie, I’m Melissa. Is there anything I can help you with?” she asked as she took his hand and shook it firmly.

“Oh, right! I was just looking for an extra chair.”

“Of course, here you go,” she said as she handed him one of the spare folding chairs lying around.

“Thank you so much. I should, uh, get back to the team. It was nice to meet you Melissa,” said Jamie.

“Yeah, same to you,” said Melissa with a soft wave, and she watched Jamie wander off to locate the rest of the team with a small smile on her lips.

The day flew by as the players spent time with patients and their families in the playroom, and visited the rooms of those who were too sick to be around the other kids. Both the players and staff had a great time, playing games in the playroom, taking photos of the kids with the players (Skylar definitely ended up with at least one selfie with Tyler by the time all was said and done). Melissa had noticed Jamie glancing her way a few times, but was too busy to dwell on it. When their visit was coming to a close, Melissa was at the nursing station discussing something with one of her colleagues, when she saw Jamie walk by. He paused when he saw her and waved. She told her coworker she’d be right back, and walked to the desk to see what he needed.

“Uh, I was actually wondering if you’d be interested in getting coffee with me sometime,” he asked, hand placed sheepishly on the back of his neck. Melissa blushed and agreed, scribbling her phone number down on a post it note before handing it to Jamie with a smile.

“Bye Jamie, I hope you enjoyed your visit.” “I did, but this just made it even better,” he said with a small smile as Tyler rounded the corner, complaining about how he was taking too long. When he noticed the two of you were talking he gave you a small smile, before explaining that they had to leave, before dragging Jamie off. Melissa turned around and rolled her eyes upon seeing the looks she was  getting from the other nurses around her, a small smirk on her face. The rest of her shift Melissa felt like she was floating, Jamie Benn of all people wanted to hang out with her. Melissa got home from her shift at about 11 PM, and was greeted by a message from Jamie

J: Hey, it’s Jamie. Hope it’s not too late to message you. Just wanted to see if you were free for coffee tomorrow?

J: I just want to make sure I’m not giving you the wrong impression here, because as much as I would love if this was going to be a date I just got out of a serious relationship and I don’t want to rush into anything. If that’s not what you want I won’t be offended, I promise.

M: Hi Jamie! Don’t worry about the time, I just got off work. I totally get where you’re coming from and I’m more than happy to be just friends if that’s what you want. I can do coffee tomorrow, but not until after my shift if that’s okay.

J: That’s fine, can you do 7 PM? We could meet at the little café a few blocks from the hospital M: Sounds good, see you then! :)

J: See you :)

Melissa went to bed with a smile on her face, feeling both excited and nervous. 6:00 the following evening Melissa was home from the hospital, getting ready. She’d showered, and decided on a simple outfit. Leggings, a grey tank top, cardigan, and ankle boots. Cute yet casual- after all, Jamie did just want to be friends. She arrived at the coffee shop a few minutes before 7:00, and sure enough Jamie was already inside. He was wearing a dark V neck tee that fit him snugly, and showed off his tattooed arms. His dark hair was slicked back and his long legs were folded under the table in dark shorts. He looked a little nervous, but once he noticed Melissa he gave her a large, bright smile and lifted his hand to wave gently. Melissa waved back and approached the table. Jamie stood to hug her, and Melissa finally realized how, well, big Jamie was. His body seemed to swallow her 5’6” frame, but she wasn’t complaining. He pulled away before pulling Melissa’s chair out for her.

“What do you want?” asked Jamie, gesturing to the menu hanging above the till.

“Oh I’ll go order in a few minutes, thank you though” replied Melissa, feeling guilty about letting Jamie pay.

“Nah, my treat,” he said with a small smile.

“Well if you insist, a medium iced vanilla latte please.” Jamie wandered off and returned a few minutes later with coffees in hand. The two of them sat and talked for what felt like minutes but was probably hours. Melissa uncovered the funny, chatty side of Jamie, the one he didn’t share with the media often. They bonded over both growing up in Canada, trading childhood stories of Melissa’s life in Ontario and Jamie’s in BC. They talked about friends, family, work, and interest. Before they knew it they were the last ones in the café, and it was beginning to close.

“Do you want a ride home?” offered Jamie, but Melissa shook her head, saying she’d parked a few blocks away. Jamie insisted that he walk her to her car, so the two of them wandered through the streets of Dallas, air still warm at 10 PM. They eventually made it to Meissa’s car and said goodbye with one last hug. Jamie turned to leave and Melissa watched him go, feeling guilt begin to bubble slowly in her stomach when she started to wish it had been a kiss goodbye rather than a hug.

Very brief there is soo sooo much more to say about all this than what im about to say of course. here goes. it’s already fading as i begin.

some idek weird schoolworld idk! a scrapbook with colorful photos of the old school but it was like washington showing the old cafeteria (not real life) and food court and bathroom hand washing stations idk. mrs cowing was there idk she was like mom or idek we were like related like family? too vague but she was showing me (not really reality me t all or even a  physical being) pictures of her kids and in one i said ill try to find jackie (her daughter) and quickly pointed to a girl who looked like jackie and she said close but it was the girl to the left of her with a really orange tan.. eeetcccc.. so much holy craaappp so so much i cant even!!! nights and days of stuff.... some weird thing where i was trying to rescue animals through a cat door type thing i left open like a group of baby pandas wandered in then i opened another door in this tunnel thing leading up a staircase with this big room secret upsaairs thing where they lived until idk ?? we put the back in their natural enviromnent bc they were being poached or somethign what?? next door afar the whole time was mrs cowing in this weird train type really narrow trailer house wtff. it wasnt a neighborhood or anything kinda in the middle of nowhere field world wtf! there wre lambs, etc idk. and somewhere in the mix was karen alternate reality version she was like really naughty like promiscuous always with boys idk she was like sanding v oice messages to them like “come on bad boy” someting about bl****** it was weird idk what else happened with that. something with a bed then it cut away to a new segment of the dream... jumping around. i was trying to sneak on mrs cowing’s train for this one photo in her refrigerator? what? idek what it was  some old photo like from the 90s maybe of something or someone? idk!!! then there was this whole thing with me and nori and like a field trip or something in this old school place or train or plane kinda with bunkbeds and idek!! it was in the middle of nowhere what.  so i wanted a top bunk but this jellyfish thing wtf took my spot and nori was also on a top bunk and i was like thats so unfair i never get a top bunkbed and that jellyfish doesn’t even need a top bunk, it doesn’t even have a mind! so we moved the jellyfish and it was like 3 dead washed up jellyfish on the floor wtf…. next scene a school burning down on fire someone said “areas 1,2,3,7,8, are destroyed” or something like that. a whole thing involving that occurred…. like a pretty long / huge part of the dream but i forgot. more more omgg damnig!! i feel like I’m forgetting a huge huge segment… oh yeah the thing with the secret doors… well idont even but somehow it was then later like the incredibles family but mrs cowings family but also a made up family and they had to hide their kids which was kind of pilar,= & teagan, but NOT. they had to hide them in the upstairs dome hidden world i mentioned before with the pandas. for years. but they didn’t age. this part of the dream was huge i can’t even describe holy shyot!!  so so much. aunt becky was there like a maid for us and other people idk! taking care and stuff and the kids or whatever they were were being really loud like laughing and playing crazily one day or early on and a neighbor guy bc it was somewhat like an apartment got concerned and ventured up the stairs secret and i told aunt becky quickly and she had protocol like she’d pretend it was like a castle (that makes sense. totally.) but i left and later i came back and the guy was actually there bc he and becky had talked over a dating app and was there to meet . so then they were in love lmao…. so much more holy crap!!! dad was there something in this place with a huge circus ring thing idek like a competition like some game show with random people from the audience getting picked but it was insaaanee and our aunt stacy (but her name was willy or wilbur in the story) kept getting picked and winning so much money. later cut to a scene of her house alternate reality x 10000 with  weird rooms, puzzles, a garage thing where mom said she got rid of most o her bikes she used to have like 100 but then it was reduced to a toy box full wtf. i picked up my old light blue bike from 2012 ew and tried to ride it (irl we only have 4 bikes and i need a bike to go riding with the family) but when i tried to brake the handle break was broken so i couldn’t use that bike. mom said some bikes don’t have that? wtf. anyway so so much more i cannot even holy crapp!!!!!! so overwhelming. i missed a crapton but onto the “next” segment. some family reunion thing in this specific backyard wilderness forest woods setting that mustve been in an oooold dream or somehow fabricated based on fragments of childhood memories. like a family get together with lawn chairs, campfire, etc. logs lying around. while this was happening in my brain in the dream i was like so overcome bc i remembered this place from childhood. now that I’m awake i know i made that up. this wasn’t in rea life but it sure as heck felt like it!! so here we go. it was current day but it was weird everything felt like 2006-2009 idk! mason was younger, so were pilar and teagan. i took pilar’s pink ds because i had no cameraa w/ me and desperately wanted to photograph what i was seeing! but it took forever to take pictures it was so frustrating. like it kept lagging and stalling so it hooklike 30 seconds to take one picture & wanted to hurry because i felt like a time bomb was ticking and it all would vanish soon…. so we ventured along. i took pics of the pile of logs which was exactly how i “remembered it” from my real memories, the layout of the family sitting around in groups, the fields, the trees leading to the woods nearby.. when i was it. this specific stream arrangement to a secret secured place with a tree with a split kinda knot in it opened up like a pocket… we went closer , it was scary bc i didn’t want to drop the ds in the stream…. and i looked inside the wide knot of the tree and saw old messages, blue egg shells, white rocks. that we (my sisters, me and our cousins) left there last time we had gone there. i was so overcome with emotions like it was amazing like a lost part of my past (but this did not happen irl although it sure damn felt like it did!) the white rocks had our initials carved on it.  “T.H. 2010” was the main one i kept seeing. and there were crumpled up pieces of paper with messages that were kinda washed away (the inked/penciled words) . there was this asian type girl with us too but idk who she was. but she discovered more stuff but i was like slow down  i need to get pictures of this stuff first and preserve it!!!!! it was crazy i thought it was going to slip away  before my eyes and disappear, i was kinda panicking. she had found more secret stuff we left behind. teagan found a littlest pet shop benny thing with some initials written on its foot in the tree. the girl found a magazine of our dad posting in the front cover for some local gymnastics halloween party thing idk. then we went inside this secret passage near the secluded area (but we never ended up going in there. it was like a little mini pond that the stream led to , dark in the shade of trees with weeping willows and stuff— like the surskit area in poke park wii idk) — and it was kinda scary in the secret hole idk not really but it was  an old 2000s box t.v. playing dad’s tapes of gymnastics stuff and then stuffed with straw scarecrow type things sitting around it like a halloween props. they were in the pose of the picture on the cover, one of the dummies was supposed to resemble dad. there was a pumpkin on top of the tv. then it jumped around a bit idk  and my camera/ds died i guess. so i rwanted to run back home . to get a real camera. mason and pilar came with me and we had to run dow a super steep hill like the one in town by hermann… mason had his bike, i was running so fast my feet couldn’t stop and i reach out my right hand and grabbed a pole and swung around it as mason massed under my arm, ducking. it was funny, perfect timing. then this whole segment of the dream pretty much abruptly ended. and now we’re at the last segment. i pretty much forgot it at this point. something really weird and not as memorable so I’m not really complaining. but it is annoying to forget. some weird prank type thing where this girl and this weird guy who was serving food hit it off and got married instantly. it was weird idk it was supposed to be like a funny prank thing but too vague to remember now. ufgh.it was weird idk what else happened with that. something with a bed then it cut away to a new segment of the dream... jumping around.

the TOP 10 albums I saved to my Spotify in 2017

Seasons greetings friends. I write to you from icy cold Vernon, BC. I’m fighting a sore throat, dried out sinuses, and an eye infection I got from the pool at the Vernon Lodge (formerly the Best Western, currently featuring a Don Cherry branded sports bar). But enough about me. Grab a cup of hot cocoa and kick up your feet. It’s time for another one of D. Greene’s horribly written year end top 10 lists.

10. The Guess Who - American Woman (also Wheatfield Soul and Canned Heat)

 We’ll start off with a perfect double whammy example of why you should stop reading this right now. Seriously. Ok well don’t say anyone even remotely recommended reading this all the way through. First off - These albums came out over 40 years ago. Second - I listened to them all 5-10 years ago. But guess what amigos - they weren’t saved to my Spotify library until this year. I have a beautiful memory of driving around getting together production requirements for a weekend of shooting Gritzmore Season One which is available for your viewing pleasure on YouTube and Funny or Die. With me were my friends Derek (listens to Black Sabbath and Queens of the Stone Age), Justin (listens to Tragically Hip and Anime music), and Melissa (listens to only Japanese folk songs and Lady Gaga(Zef if you’re reading this please DM me)). Despite our wildly different tastes in listening; all genres were transcended by the heavy yet clean and spatial Canadian dad rock majesty that is the Guess Who. While most dad bands force you to listen to a best of because of the sheer monotony of a pentatonic rock album produced in the 70s, The Guess Who’s albums hold up. You’ve got the sounds of jazz, hard rock, 60s referencing psych and more. I’m really running out of steam here and I’m still on number 10 oh my god. Be a good Canadian and listen to some Guess Who.

9. Painted Fruit - PF II

And now to completely stray from the previously mentioned guide lines seemingly rendering this piece of “journalism” more pointless than it all ready is. This album isn’t on Spotify but it is on Bandcamp. Painted Fruit are some old friends from the mother land, Vernon. I shot a video for them a while ago. It still kind of holds up even though it’s on YouTube in 720p. This album sports shiny reverberating guitars influenced by beach rock, drums caught up half way between garage and math rock, and vocals obviously influenced by Talking Heads or similarly uninhibited post punk wailing. My favourite track is “Primitive” it really heats up near the end. Very upbeat but dark. It’s not too common an album can keep you tuned in start to finish but the Fruit’s second album is mentally stimulating all the way through whether it’s on in the car or if you’re taking a more scrutinizing listen with headphones.

8. Fleetwood Mac - Future Games

If you’ve ever spent any time around me you know I don’t shut the fuck up about pre-Stevie Knicks Fleetwood Mac. I think I’m SO god damn cultured because I can say “ACTUALLY they started out as a blues band before transitioning in psychedelic and eventually soft rock”. Wow David. Mr. Rock and Roll trivia. You don’t know shit about what’s going on in the world politically or even in your own city for that matter. You don’t watch sports. You don’t even watch current TV and movies even though you claim to be a writer and director. But I bet you’ve got some sick ass trivia about Fleetwood Mac. They’re that band that does “thunder only happens when it’s raining” right? They’re pretty good - my mom has a few of their CDs. Whatever don’t tell me how to live my life. One day I’m going to get on Jeopardy and then we’ll see who’s laughing when I burn the fuck through the entire rock and roll trivia category and the $1000 daily double is “this guitarist played in Fleetwood Mac before departing and eventually joining the religious cult known as the Children of God” “WHO IS JEREMY SPENCER, ALEX!?” Anyway this album is really good and it’s finally on Spotify. And not to confuse you, Jeremy Spencer plays on Then Play On, which is not on Spotify yet. Danny Kirwan is on Future Games.

7. Kanye West - 808s and Heartbreak/Graduation

Hey Kanye how you doing buddy? Seems like you’re thinking about a lot. Got a lot going on upstairs. Glad I got to see the Life of Pablo show before you cancelled the rest of the tour. If you need to talk or anything I’m right here. It can’t be easy keeping up with those krazy Kardashians. What happened to the album you said you’d put out by this past summer? Can we have a little teaser at least? I was going to DM you on Twitter but you deleted it. Well I just wanted to write and say that I was listening to 808s and Graduation and was thinking about how 10 years ago you literally laid the ground work for the majority of current pop and hip hop. Every dance track lately has the same synth sounds as Graduation. Even rock artists are writing easy listening yacht rock inspired songs again. And who did you sample on Champion? That’s right Steely Dan. You were pumping out vocoder and heavy minimal bass 10 years before Future and 21 Savage. You’re truly an artist my friend even if I compared you to dads who use Facebook last year. Gimme a call man let’s hang out - I miss you.

6. Once and Future Band - Once and Future Band / Brain

The best kind of satisfaction is the kind you didn’t even know you were after. I came across Once and Future Band and realized I had an itch for prog rock I didn’t know needed scratching. If you’ve ever rocked out to Yes, early King Crimson, late Led Zeppelin, Supertramp, I urge you to check these guys out. Every song plays for around 5-6 minutes. Each track an adventure. They even pepper in elements of classic rock and pop but keep you guessing with messy yet precise fills and time signatures. I just noticed their EP “Brain” isn’t on Spotify anymore which is a huge bummer but you should try and track it down.

5. Arcade Fire - Everything Now 

Arcade Fire are a band that “get it” in every sense of that expression. Lyrically I haven’t identified with songs like the ones on Everything Now since...I want to say ever. They’ve completely found their place sonically after the somewhat experimental “Reflektor.” We can all pretend the song you put out with Mavis Staples doesn’t exist, don’t worry. The singles off this album are perfect. The album tracks leave nothing to be desired. Your music videos - MOIA *kissing fingers hand gesture*, your concert OH MY GOOD GOD it was a work of performance art. It’s hard to put into words how Arcade Fire pleases me as a band so I’m going to stop now. Please keep making records forever. Also u kno Arcade Fire can get it ;)

4. Vulfpeck - Mr. Finish Line

This year I was introduced to one of the tightest bands of I’ve ever heard. I’m not using tight like I’m a snowboarder from 2009. I mean musically this band is tight. Vulfpeck is based around 2 guys who went to music school and became gods of building beautiful, happy, upbeat songs around a bass guitar and a drum kit. There is one fill in the track Baby I Don’t Know where the saxophone and the guitar walk down some sort of mind mending jazz scale that just about broke me the first time I heard it. I feel like I intended for this article to be funny but I’m getting really earnest with these entries which isn’t good because it’s not funny and it’s not written well why are you still even here. Hang in there. If you prove you read it all the way through I’ll shake your hand, look you in the eye, and say say thank you.

3. The Lemon Twigs - Do Hollywood

A studio band built around 2 kids who were 17 and 19 or something when this came out. I’m not a real journalist do your own fact checking. I just know when I saw them play at the Cobalt they weren’t even close to old enough to drink in Canada. The Lemon Twigs are part of a fascinating group of LA musicians who seem to all be associated with Johnathan Rado - member of Foxygen, produced this album for the Twigs, produced Tim Heideckers album that came out this year. (How Tim Heidecker is spending his time creatively recently is very questionable. Wareheim remains my favourite. Also Tim and Eric shaped modern comedy but that’s a different essay). Rado also worked with Diane Coffee, former Foxygen drummer, former child actor - like the members of the lemon twigs. The Twigs went to the same high school as Billy Joel which probably doesn’t mean anything but hey isn’t LA neat? In their circle as well is Alex Cameron whose latest album is pretty fun. Basically what I’m getting at here is I’m a big Hollywood wannabe who feels left out of the fun. I just wanna be famous ok? Dammit. This album is great check it out.

2. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell Live

Sufjan Stevens is a fascinating artist and person. Who would you sit down and have a 4 hour conversation with if you were given the chance? Sufjan Stevens is on my list. I want to know his creative process, how he spends his days off, how he decides what clothes to wear, why he would cover Hotline Bling live (not complaining - it was incredible to see in person). I got to see Sufjan in concert twice last year and while the experiences were almost too good to be true I was left both times with the bittersweet feeling that I may never experience this or something quite like it again. It’s definitely not being there but if any of Sufjan’s work needed a live recording it was Carrie & Lowell. 

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

HAIM - Just the song You Never Knew. Devonte Hynes is one hell of a producer and song writer. I think I tricked myself into liking HAIM just because I have crushes on all three of them. When I get to Hollywood I’m going to ask Alana on a date.

John Lennon - Mind Games

There’s so much post Beatles music I feel like I’ll never get through it all. I’m usually turned off by Lennon’s cynical lyrically driven basic rock songs but there’s some really good stuff on this album.

Kevin Morby - City Music

New music that sounds old. This album is great and led me to listen to a bunch of his old stuff too. If you don’t know Morby listen to Singing Saw, Harlem River, and follow him on Instagram.

LCD Soundsystem - american dream

I’m more into dance music than I’ve ever been. Not EDM but music by bands that makes you dance. Also my friends got to see them live in New Orleans and I’m definitely not jealous and didn’t have FOMO the whole time they were there and I was back in Vancouver.

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffit

Zeppelin’s best album that isn’t made up of songs completely stolen from black musicians.

Loving - Loving

Cool easy listening woozy Mac DeMarco rip off tunes.

Nick Hakim - Green Twins

Cool soulful spacey psych music that doesn’t cross into sounding like Hozier.

Paul McCartney - Pure McCartney

Best of Paul who is the best Beatle.

Shintaro Sakamoto - various

Awesome Japanese psych pop.

Steely Dan - Aja

The best of all dad/yacht/jazz rock there is. The bench mark for easy listening melodic rock. I listened to I Got The News probably 200 times this year.

The War on Drugs - A Deeper Understanding

I call bullshit on every music writer who put this in their year end list. No one has played this album past like track 5. It all sounds the same.

Mac DeMarco - This Old Dog

I love Mac. I want to be his friend. Actually I just want his life. I follow him and Kiera on Instagram. His cover of Wonderful Christmastime he just put out is great. I hope Mr. DeMarco keeps making music for decades. What a guy. He doesn’t even shave or dress up when he goes on network late night talk shows. Unfortunately I don’t go to his concerts anymore because they used to be $20 and now they’re like $60. Anyway man keep doing your thing. I don’t care if I come across as a mindless hipster who happens to also roll up his pants. I like your songs. You write great lyrics about love and life. You can shred guitar. Your live cover of Reeling In The Years is amazing. I still laugh about the time I saw you cover Enter Sandman and Smoke On the Water. Mac 4ever.

My pamily? My pamily? Ohmayghd!!! *he he*

Our grade school teachers once taught us that family is the basic unit of the society. And I have grown to agree with that. Because I can never picture myself without my family. I don’t know where I will be if not for them. They are the ones who picked me up even in my darkest days, took care of me in my weakest moments, loved me despite all my wrongs and imperfections.

My family is my living source of strength, peace, and love in my life. They are my basics; my comfort zone - where I can be me, whatever I wanna be when I am with them. I love my family sooooo much! They are the first (and forever will be!) and best presents I ever received from God. My family means everything to me that is why I am doing all I can to make them happy. 💖

My family has always had this close ties to each other, that strong and intimate family connection where my mum’s and pap’s family really turned into a one, big, happy ohana. My sister and I grew up with our grandparents since our parents were working. Actually, ate is much closer to the father side while I am on the mother side. But hey, we love them both, of course. *heart hearts*

Papa’s parents passed away already. However, I still can remember those memories I had with Lola Sabel and Lolo Terio even if that was a long time ago already. I love those talks with them while they were in the rocking chairs, those random gifts given by our grandmother to us, and most especially, those singing afternoons with grandpa. Oh geez, I am starting to get teary-eyed...

I am the type of person who cherishes the moment in front of me. While my mother’s parents are still here with us, of couuurse, I am trying my best to give them the love they deserve. Especially me, I am a lola’s girl! Kindergarten to now that I am still working, Lola Ining still treats me like a princess. Lolo Pedro and Lola do make me feel that all the time. Hashtag spoiled! Hahaha!

When I was a kid, I used to stay at grannies’ house every weekend. I always have that giddy feeling inside me when I am on the tricycle going to nanay’s. Why? Because they have a sari-sari store and I want to help in organizing her racks. That’s what triggered my OC-ness. LOL! Mama also said that I can train my math skills there. But huy, I hate that subject. Huehue. And the truth is, I have playmates there. Wala kasi dito sa’min. Hahaha. And since bata, I love being there - just enjoying and letting my imaginations rule. Hihihi. Let me add that sissy and I have the most delicious breakfast all the time whenever we are there! Walang palya, promise. Sometimes, Jollibee pa since it is just walking distance from the house. So, imagine that? Who would not love this kind of grannies who take care their granddaughters so fine like that? They love my parents, yes, but they do it twice to us! The roots are just the best. =)))))

The day we have been waiting for, March 4, 2017, when my Lola Ining turned 75 years you-ld (young and old, ya kno bc nanay will be mad if she read this haha) has arrived. The family was not able to give her any big birthday celebration for the past years so we took the chance of having it this year. Nanay has been a wonderful blessing to lots of people. Indeed, she deserves this best moment of her life! Hihihi. Being with her since I was a kid, it was me who organized the event. Well actually, it is all of us but I am the punong-abala - from the meeting with the Max’s manager to the sending of invitations, plus packing of souvenirs and until the day it came. I was a bit nervous because I might fail this event. But really reaaally excited because Lola does not know about this. Yuuup, this is a surprise birthday bash. 🙌🎉

At that day, my sister and I headed to Max’s, earlier than anybody else to set-up the place (but it was already nice when we went so just a little organizing left yay five-stars for that!) and to take care of Lola’s guests. It was so good because aside from nanay’s family, us, I really can say there are many people who love her. I thought I was the only one excited but they are more hyped than me! Hahaha! I appreciate everyone’s presence because they are not late. I actually was a bit embarrassed because I let them wait for nanay, and the food. Hahahahaha! But everything was worth it, I tell you! Our plans fell on the right track. As what we have talked about, Mama and Papa will fetch our extended family and we must disappoint her when she will know sissy and I have work at her special day. Then, the guests must coordinate with us so the surprise will follow. Hihihi. SML!

When Lola entered the function hall, we turned the lights off but you can say that the happy air was floating. Funny how she was ranting why they were going inside this dark place of the restaurant but when the lights were opened and the confetti popped, the moment just got slow-mo. My Lola heard the happy birthday song, saw the people dear to her heart, and I don’t know!!! All I know is that it was just an amazing moment! *heart heart heart*

There is no definite program for Lola’s birthday party but we have some things prepared. After Lola thanked each table for coming, we let the restaurant serve the yummy (and heavy gosh busooog!) lunch then. To have an ice breaker while eating the desserts, we played some video greetings from nanay’s relatives outside the country. Everyone was touched, especially Lola’s dabarkads. They even wanted me to upload this little throwback video made by Tita Elein who is in Abu Dhabi already because they love it. Hahaha! Since Max’s has a partnered photographer for events like this, we also had better photos. What do people love to do when they are on parties, take pictures right? Or am I the only one? Hahahahaha! We had photo-ops with everyone before leaving. And indeed, it is a captured moment of forever - as if like lola just celebrated her debut and turned 18. Hahaha!

Since we are in Ayala already, we continued the day together. Yeeezzz, family day! Been so long since we did one eh. Huehue. After the party, my parents went to the supermarket but I did not come because I stayed with my friends. I had my best friend Rov and boyfriend Yasmin with me today as well. They supported my event and they are my family too so they are welcome! My fam treats them like they are members too anyway. Hihihi. Also, bantay ako nila Lolo and Lola. You know, old people, do not want to walk for a long time because they feel tired easily. He he. But okay sooo, Landmark has this contest that when you purchased a certain amount, you can play a game and of course, has a possibility to win. My tito and boyfriend played a ball balance game and flipping a bottle stuff like that. Syempre, cheer cheer ako dun. Hahahahaha! They won little gifts from the supermarket like lotion, wipes, and tissue. Yay, thanks Landmark because the two enjoyed! Hahaha! And most importantly, a family day is of course, with God! We attended the anticipated mass and I am happy that the mass presider is my favorite priest, Fr. Jun Sescon! Learrrned a lot. Should I tell you to repent and come back to God this Temptation Sunday? Hihihi. Thanks for this, Father! And G! I love you God! We love youuuuu! 💖💖

But if you think that will be the end of this post, wait wait, just a minute because the day does not end here. We had luscious dinner at Buddy’s and unlimited twirl ice cream at Family Mart. It was me who asked for a dessert because y not? Hahahahaha! I do not want to end this day, that is why. They kept on complaining how full they are but he he, sorry na, it is like the best family day I eeeverrrrr had again after I can’t remember years eh!?! Don’t wanna add cheesy words pa because you can see how blissed I am. What happened today seems to be just simple but it is full of love, sooo much love. 💖 💖 💖
