Are the ArchieSonic comics actually an 80's/90's syndicated cartoon? Episode 27: Gain super speed

Happy new year, and welcome back to my look at the ArchieSonic comic series, and how it shared a lot of the same story tropes as a typical ‘80s or ‘90s syndicated cartoon! So, what’s on the agenda for today?

Episode 27: Gain super speed 

Ahh. So literally every single comic featuring Sonic the Hedgehog. :P Well no actually, the trope specifically says “gain super speed,” and Sonic already had his speed in the comics. So for this one we’re going to have to look at the instances where someone other than Sonic gained super speed, and the most notable person is Mina Moongoose.

First introduced in Sonic #76 right after the return of Robotnik, Mina attempted to storm Robotnik’s lab all by herself after her mother was captured. Sonic managed to talk her out of it, reasoning that her mother had likely already been roboticised, and escorted her to the safety of Knothole. Mina was mostly a background character for awhile (in part because the narrative was interrupted by the Sonic Adventure adaptation) but started to gain prominence in Sonic #90.

During a raid on Robotropolis King Acorn had wielded the mythical Sword of Acorns against Sonic’s roboticised Uncle Chuck and pet dog Muttski, seeming to temporarily restore their free wills. Unfortunately the two robots were ushered away through a trick wall and the King was been badly injured, so Sonic had to rush the King away for medical attention. Unaware that the Sword’s effects on Uncle Chuck and Muttski were not temporary, Sonic later stole the Sword and attempted to raid Robotropolis himself to get them back.

However he bumped into Mina outside Knothole and the two of them were ambushed by Eggman’s combots, tough robots with various weapons and the ability to camouflage themselves. One of them managed to get the drop on Sonic, knocking him out.

Mina carried him to safety, suddenly finding that she had super speed just like him and having no idea how that had happened.

As you can see, Mina had very little control of her newfound ability at first, and later asked Sonic to train her so that she would be able to run around without crashing face-first into people.

It was later revealed that Mina’s speed was secretly given to her by Mammoth Mogul, who had also “marked” her so that he could take control of her at a later date should the need arise. This later date ended up being in Sonic #185, where Mammoth Mogul took control of Mina and two others he had previously marked, Tails and Mighty, to blackmail Sonic into releasing him from prison and bringing him a Chaos Emerald.

Mogul attempted to beat Sonic into submission with his new pawns, but when that didn’t work he changed tactics and had Sonic’s friends put themselves in immediate danger.

Knowing he couldn’t get all three of them to safety in time, Sonic swallowed his pride and gave Mogul the Chaos Emerald. Tails’ Uncle Merlin would later remove Mogul’s mark from Tails, Mina and Mighty, so that they could not be controlled by him again.

I’d like to note that there is a slight continuity error in this story, as Mogul supposedly gave Mina her speed around the time we first met her in Sonic #76. However Mogul was still imprisoned in the Master Emerald at that time, so he could not have done that. But considering we didn’t actually see Mina use her super speed for the first time until issue #90, it’s easy enough to pass that off as a slight error and that Mogul met her around the time that Sonic stole the Sword of Acorns.

While Mina’s super speed became a permanent upgrade for her, there were a couple of instances where other characters temporarily got his super speed. One of them I’ve already covered, in that story where Sonic and Knuckles had a body swap and in doing so also gained each others’ powers. But the other one is from Sonic #115’s story, “Meanie in a Bottle.”

While Sonic and Muttski are out playing fetch one day, they find a bottle with a genie trapped inside. Far from showing the proper gratitude for being freed, the genie refuses Sonic’s request to grant three wishes and instead plays a prank on him, giving his super speed to Muttski.

Wacky hijinks ensue (for all of like, one page) before Sonic and Muttski bump into the genie again and re-capture it.

The genie begrudgingly agrees to grant Sonic his three wishes, and Sonic uses them to restore the status quo and re-imprison the genie. That’s what you get for being a jerk, you jerk.

If you'll indulge me a little rant time...

I really don’t like this story. It’s from an era of the comic I personally call the “lazy times,” where I feel the writers didn’t really know what to do with the characters. Robotropolis had been blown up, setting Eggman and Snively back for a period as they worked to download themselves into new robotic bodies and set up a new base of operations. This era of the comics was full of short stories like this which had some good ideas, but because the stories were all so short there really wasn’t any time to explore those ideas. Take the one we just had, for instance. A story where Sonic loses his speed and it’s instead given to his pet dog isn’t a bad idea, but they didn’t really take the opportunity to do anything with it. We got an extremely brief montage of Muttski using his speed, and then it was back to the status quo. Not to mention that we also got a full issue dedicated to just adapting an episode of SatAM during this era, with terrible, terrible art. Things eventually improved though… and then got worse again after Karl Bollers left and Ken Penders was writing almost everything. But then he got fed up and left and Ian took over, and things quickly improved.

The Thrilling Saga of Connie paying real life money for the Worst Sonic TV Show

Let’s begin with the simple fact that me and my sister, @birdsareblooming​ “Cori”, have both been hyperfixating on Sonic the Hedgehog since last March. During this hyperfixation, I was on Sonic Wiki to copy-paste song lyrics onto my stolen mp3s, and I called my sister in and pointed at the template at the bottom. 

“What is this Sonic Underground thing?” I asked. “It has one shit billion songs.” 

So we clicked on the page to read about it, and each sentence we read was a punch in the gut and this quickly became the funniest thing we’d ever read. Highlights include:

“Sonic[...] is known to be a prince” 

Sonic has two siblings who actually have good characterization but their names are literally just Sonia and Manic. Like. Sonic split into two names. jesus christ 

Also Sonic and his siblings all share a voice actor. honestly Jaleel White does his best with it but 

“The three siblings possess enchanted medallions that transform not only into musical instruments, but also into weapons.”

“Some fans consider Sonia to be a clone of Amy Rose, minus the attraction Amy feels for Sonic.” YEAH I SURE HOPE IT DOES

“Manic is the most often captured of the siblings” himbo king 

Knuckles shows up, and for the first, like, two sentences his description is very similar to the game, and then you get immediately pulverized by “He has a pet Dinosaur called Chomps.”

Literally so many sentences on Sonic Wiki are lowkey salty about this show. The page features lines such as “Sonic Underground bears little relation to the often complex Sonic universe (including previous animated series, as well as Sonic comics and games), and shares only three established characters” and “many of the characters in the Freedom Fighter group that were in Sonic the Hedgehog are completely left out (including Tails).”

*checks air dates* It only lasted two goddamn months

So after seeing this we thought it was the funniest thing and we showed our older sister, @patema-introverted​ “North.” To our surprise, our at the time “knew nothing about this sonic bullshit” sister recognized the show. Turns out she’d seen trailers for it as a child and that was her sole exposure to Sonic canon. 

We were in quarantine at the time, so we ended up finding it on YouTube and binge-watching it all together as a sibling bonding activity. It was just as hilarious as we thought it would be- some stuff was legitimately good, like the sibling dialogue for instance, but good lord were the character designs ugly, the plot all over the place, and pretty much every song, um, not great. Also there was one episode that we skipped because it got, um, I think “stereotypical” is the nicest word I can use here. 

But the point is, we had a jolly good time watching it, and afterwards we binged all the other Sonic shows and bonded as a family. 

After quarantine, North and I go back to college. My roommate gets groceries at Walmart, while I get them elsewhere, so while she and North collect food I wander the DVD aisle to look at the cool movies and also dumpster-dive in the bargain bin for Cats (2019). I am also short as fuck, so the top shelf of movies I cannot see, I can only read the labels. 

So one day I was browsing the DVDs, and glancing over at the labels for the top shelf. I read over the final one before the shelves end. 

And then I stop, do a double take, and have a heart attack, because there is a label that reads “SONIC UNDERGROUND $3.74″

I immediately climb the shelf but there aren’t any DVDs atop the shelf. However, the label is still there. I excitedly tell my sister and roommates, freak out with them a bit, and then give myself a mission statement:

I will buy the $4 Sonic Underground DVD from Walmart

I did not want it as a gift, I did not want to find it online. I wanted to walk into a store, pick up the Worst Sonic Show on DVD, walk it straight to the checkout, and in front of the cashier and God, pay for it with my own money. I did not care if it was the whole series or two episodes; I needed to do this for my own serotonin.

We would go to Walmart about once a week. Every time, I would go to the DVD aisle, and go right to the end of the shelves. I would stare at the label SONIC UNDERGROUND $3.74 and empty space above it and wonder who the fuck was buying this other than me. I would occasionally ask employees if they had any copies in storage. I would build a shrine to Manic in my room. Okay, no I didn’t, but only because my RA would have murdered me. 

Christmas break comes, and we have to go home. We have a nice Christmas, and Cori and I infodump at each other about how we would make Sonic Underground a good show (note: we’re both galaxy braining) and also play Bendy and the Ink Machine. Fun times. 

When we finally get back to College, it’s late January- long story short we have a very long winter break. My roommate who gets food at Walmart got food without us the first week cause she showed up first, so we take her out to Walmart the first time in the year of our lord 2021 on January 29. 

I wander the Valentine’s aisle, immediately grabbing a sequin puppy. I go to the DVDs and see Animaniacs Season One, also grab that. 

And then.

There it is.

The Holy Grail. 

Above the label SONIC UNDERGROUND $3.74, is one DVD left. 

Already I am losing my mind. It’s roughly seven hours of episodes- I couldn’t find an episode list, but I think that’s half the show, for $4! And the cover is amazing. 

That’s a png of Sonic from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993) with a medallion badly photoshopped over it. The medallion is too small. 

Manic is shoved into the corner. He doesn’t have his medallion at all. 

Sonia isn’t even pictured on the front cover, probably because they realized she was the worst designed of the bunch. I’m not ragging on her though, because she’s still one of the better designed characters of the show. Those background characters make me cry 

So you bet your ass I finally paid my hard-earned $4 for this shit. Upon getting home, I discovered that there was even wilder shit with this DVD than I thought. 

For starters: the bonus features listed are as follows:

Original Concept Art - did not expect that these character designs were the final draft

Storyboard-to-screen - did not expect they bothered to storyboard this 

Music Video Jukebox - that’s cute, they thought we liked the music 

Interviews with original screenwriter & executive producer - I fully expect the only questions to be “why.” 

On the left of this list are screenshots from the show, where people can finally see Sonia, who we Know™ is a girl because she is pink and has hair and also an actual body shape instead of just circles like her brothers. 

But wait... what’s that in the lefthand corner? 

That looks like some kind of robot. But it’s not a robot from Sonic Underground! That didn’t appear once. Why is it here? 

The mystery continues upon opening the DVD case: inside are advertisements for other collections, including other Sonic DVDs: two volumes of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993) and the final episodes of Sonic the Hedgehog “SatAM” (1993)

First of all, the first volume of AOSTH has the exact same PNG of Sonic as the Underground Volume 1. Not even trying to hide it. But second... the second volume of AOSTH also has this robot on its cover. 

And THIS ROBOT IS ALSO DECORATING THE THIRD DISC IN THE SET?

So you may be asking, who is this robot? Is it from AOSTH or Underground?

IT’S FROM FUCKING SATAM. The one show that doesn’t have it decorating the DVD covers.

Also, not only is it from SatAM, it only appears in one fucking episode. Not a major character! AND IT HAS A DIFFERENT DESIGN ON THE PROMO ART, WITH HAIR AND FANGS.

Why is it showing up everywhere? What is going on? 

I have not yet had the opportunity to watch this glorious piece of animation, but I am so glad at the confusion I have felt upon receiving it. 

But before I go, I must share with you the best part of this DVD purchase. And it was flipping to the back, scanning the details, and discovering the exact runtime of the episode collection. 

Guys, gals, and enby pals, friends and enemies, Nintendo and Sega, the first Volume of Sonic Underground has a runtime of...

420 MINUTES.

Maybe I’m wrong and this IS the best Sonic show.

My ideas for Sonic Riders 4!

Title:

Sonic Riders: Drift Dimension

I have a lot of ideas for a potential Sonic Riders sequel and I hope you can enjoy what I have to say. I am very passionate about the Sonic series and would love to see the Babylon Rogues again. I wrote a lot, but any comments or feedback would be wonderful! Check it out under this cut!

Story:

I would like the story mode to continue to split between Team Sonic and the Babylon Rogues. For the sake of making this cohesive, I will write out the narrative linearly.

Set a few years after King Doc’s tournament, Wave has convinced Jet to allow her to continue to investigate Babylon Garden even more under the promise that it would improve their Extreme Gears. The 3 Babylon Rogues go deep within the ruins of Babylon Garden by using their gravity modules (from Zero Gravity.) Wave is still worried about the black hole that could occur, but her calculations assure her that it won’t be a problem. However, while in the heart of this floating island, the gravity modules float into the rocky ruins and activate a bright light as Babylon Garden powers up.

Tails pilots the Tornado with Sonic, Knuckles, and Amy in tow. He detected the massive energy surge that cause Babylon Garden to light up. It seems like the garden is warping reality around it, but with their courage, they enter into the void.

It seems that Babylon Garden has teleported to another world. With their airship being grounded due to the warp, the Babylon Rogues hop onto their Extreme Gears to explore. Before long, they encounter a massive airship that completely dwarfs their own. Upon being captured, they learn that Jet’s father, Kaze, is the leader of this group known as the Babylon Legion. The Rogues have been reunited with their ancestors and family. Naturally, they’re overjoyed! Especially Jet who has been longing for his father for years.

Shortly after, Sonic and his friends encounter the airship and are reunited with the Babylon Rogues. Their fun meeting soon turns dire as the Babylon Legion surround and arrest Knuckles.

Later, Jet inquires about why they apprehended Knuckles. Kaze explains that years ago when they crash landed on Sonic’s planet, they had encountered a terrible Echidna Clan who were power hungry to conquer others. When the Babylon Legion refused to give their advance technology to the Echidna Clan, they were seen as enemies. When there were murmurs that the Echidna Clan had awakened a god of destruction, the Babylon Legion tried to get reactivate Babylon Garden to allow them to leave the planet.

Instead, Babylon Garden was stricken deep into the planet and the Babylon Legion was warped to parts unknown. Jet was baffled by what he heard, but he trusted his father. Upon meeting with Sonic and the others, they discuss what happened and that there were plenty of holes in Kaze’s story. Jet, upset that others would accuse his father, argues with them. However, there was one point that Storm brings up that cannot be ignored. How were Jet, Wave, and Storm on Sonic’s planet if the Babylon Legion were teleported to this planet?

They learn that when they were younger, Kaze had volunteered the three for an experiment to see if they could return, but in doing so, the 3 Babylon Rogues were stranded on their own with no real memory of what had happened.

The Babylon Rogues have to choose between siding with Team Sonic or the Babylon Legion, but they soon find out that Kaze intends to use his technology to convert Babylon Garden into Mecha Babylon. Having learned from the Echidna Clan, power needs to be met with power. Therefore, Kaze wants to teleport back to Sonic’s planet with Mecha Babylon being the ultimate weapon; a fortified island with weapons and a metal shell.

All the heroes band together to stop Kaze from reaching the inner ruins of Babylon Garden to allow it to teleport back to Sonic’s planet. During the climax, Kaze activates the portal only for Sonic and Jet to work together to knock him off of it. Torn between going with Sonic or staying with Kaze and the Babylon Legion, Jet ultimately decides that he must go back with Sonic. He claims that “The Babylon Legion had their chance,” as Sonic grabs his hand and the two dive into the portal.

Cut back to Sonic’s planet, Babylon Garden continues to float around the planet, perfectly reflecting Angel Island. Here, Knuckles and Storm reflect that the Echidna Clan and the Babylon Legion were a lot more similar than they were different. Wave notes that it isn’t one’s lineage that defines who they are, but what they do to better that lineage for future generations. Jet and Sonic use that as a means to claim that they’re the fastest as they race across Babylon Garden. Kaze’s words echo through Jet’s mind as he overtakes Sonic and the two ride off into the distance.

Stages:

Tundra Peaks / Frigid Avalanche – A snowbound stage high in the mountains that mixes canyons, rocky hillsides, and snow. The former stage features nice, mountain villages while the latter stage takes place with massive avalanches falling around the player.

Future Mall / Shopping Calamity – A futuristic city that leads into a massive shopping mall. Players would weave in and out of stores while making their way to a large building outside. The latter stage would be at night where a certain band of robots might be trying to get away with a robbery and chase.

Tubular Coastline / Hurricane Seaboard – A gorgeous beach that runs along side an advance city. You can choose to ride along the sand or take to the waves to get some boosts by performing tricks on the water. Be careful of the storm coming in the latter stage that alters the stage in a crazy way!

Thrill Park / Cursed Midway – A theme park with roller coasters, log flumes, and plenty of other rides. Be warned though, the haunted house gets a bit intense at night and changes the entire park!

Neon Woodland / Forest Illumination – A forest hidden within a valley that glows with luminous mushrooms and vines that glow as they are touched. This place really comes alive late at night when a rave party is going on!

Babylon Garden / Mecha Babylon – While not a remake of the original Sonic Riders track, this version would start on the outside of Babylon Garden as you go deep within the floating island. The mechanized version of this stage is far more dangerous with lasers and robots about; players would fire themselves across the island via giant turrets. Mecha Babylon would be the final boss fight against Kaze.

Dimension Hops / Nostalgia Trip – This is a bonus track where you hop between dimensional pockets of Metal City, Aquatic Capital, and Dolphin Resort. It’s a celebration of the Sonic Riders series. Nostalgia Trip sends players through Green Hill Zone (of course it’s here), Final Rush, and Sunset Heights. This one celebrates the Sonic series. These two tracks would not share music.

SEGA Heroics / SEGA Darkness – Much like the other SEGA fan service stages in the series, this one instead separates the two stages between the heroes of SEGA’s rich history and the villains. Lots of fun to be had here!

Playable Characters:

Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles Tails Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Jet the Hawk, Wave the Swallow, Storm the Albatross, Amy Rose, Kaze the Hawk, Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat, Cream the Rabbit, Blaze the Cat, Silver the Hedgehog, Vector the Crocodile, Dr. Eggman, NiGHTS, Kazuma Kiryu, Arle Nadja

Gameplay:

The gameplay would avoid the failings of Sonic Free Riders. Motion controls have been pushed since Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity and they’d be mostly dropped here. The game would implement the AIR system, but with the multiple routes with the gravity modules. Due to plot reasons, the gravity modules themselves can’t be used, so this mechanic would just be a movement of the Extreme Gears. Speed, Fly, and Power routes would still be available based on the characters and not the gears... and would hopefully be better balanced. The springs would be taken out as they were so painfully contextual in previous games. One thing from Sonic Free Riders would be certain items to change the course of the races including missiles, ink traps, and a few others. The grab mechanic to reach out to the left or right can be brought over too as it holds a lot of potential. Also, the vibrant visuals from Free Riders should be carried over! Moreover, the boost from the original game would be present. Lastly, the game would feel faster. Drifting, much like Team Sonic Racing would be emphasized more in this game.

Typical features would include the Story, Grand Prix, Battle Mode, Time Trials, Character Profiles, Gear Shop, Gear Gallery, Online Multiplayer, and Options. Let’s have alternate costumes for the characters too! Also, the Grand Prix mode would have character specific endings that would be simplistic, but still a treat and motivation to play through it with each character!

That’s basically it for my ideas. I know it’s just a pipe dream, but I would love for a Sonic Riders game to really get into the old stories and characterizations of the original two games, while adding some heart for the Babylon Rogues. It doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel, but rather just create a fun racing game that focuses on these amazing characters.

The Character Development of Sonic the Hedgehog: A Character Analysis

The Sonic the Hedgehog video game series is one that does not require very deep or complicated stories to go with their games. Due to the simplistic nature of the franchise, its characters are probably best described as two-dimensional, which would be fine, because they don’t require that third dimension of depth. The main character himself, Sonic the Hedgehog, doesn’t even have much character development throughout the series; at least at first glance that would seem to be the case, but I am here to tell you all that Sonic the Hedgehog has gone through a lot of character development throughout his adventures, making him very three-dimensional. There are four key character arcs that Sonic has gone through over the course of the main series, and I’m going to go over all of them while examining Sonic’s development in the major installments.

From Loner to Team Player

I believe at the very start of the series, Sonic the Hedgehog was a loner, who had trouble making friends and might have even closed himself off to others. In Sonic the Hedgehog 1, Sonic was the only playable character, and the only other character in the whole game was the villain, Dr. Eggman. More characters appeared in later titles, many more, but none of them are people Sonic knew before Sonic 1. They were all strangers to Sonic when they first appeared. Another piece of evidence comes from Amy Rose. Several years ago now, Sega did a mock Q&A with Sonic, and one of the questions asked of him was why he wasn’t interested in Amy. His answer was because he was too busy with his adventures to have a relationship (although there’s also an inappropriate age difference between the two, with Sonic being 15 years old, and Amy being 12).

It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to think that this makes it hard to form any relationship, whether romantic or platonic. Being able to move as fast as he can, the world around Sonic is just too slow for him, and the people that were in his life before Tails and Amy likely just couldn’t keep up. Not only that, but his powers and his status as a hero likely make him a target, which would make him dangerous to be around, as if his super speed didn’t make him dangerous enough already. However, Amy would force her way into Sonic’s life, not minding the danger, and in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic met Tails, who was able to keep up with him thanks to his propeller-like twin tails, and tagged along on his adventure to stop Eggman from destroying West Island in his search for the Chaos Emeralds. Tails may have been Sonic’s first real friend in who knows how long, maybe even ever.

That being said, Sonic still saw Tails and Amy as people he had to protect, and he had trouble getting along with people like Knuckles, who was also quite the loner, although much more so than Sonic. Then Sonic Adventure 1 took place, and it seemed like Sonic’s fears were coming true. When the Tornado 1 was shot down during the first attack on the Egg Carrier, Sonic and Tails were separated. Sonic had no idea if Tails was OK, so he needed to find him quickly, but Amy just had to show up asking for him to help a lost birdie. Sonic never agreed to this, but when Zero arrived to capture Amy and the bird, Sonic was determined to rescue them, but Zero escaped with them. Sonic had failed to protect his friends, and he wouldn’t have needed to if he was their friend in the first place.

Sonic didn’t have long to dwell on this failure, however, because Tails almost immediately appeared in his Tornado 2, which he and Sonic used to attack the Egg Carrier, and this time successfully made on board, where they find out that Amy had already escaped custody...with help from an Eggman robot, no less! In this moment, Sonic has learned that his friends can take care of themselves, meaning he can have friends without putting them in danger.

The story for Sonic Adventure 1 had a central theme that was used as the inspiration for the main song, Open Your Heart. The story was all about how you need to open your heart to others, because closing yourself off will create a cycle of pain and hatred. This lesson was put into words when Sonic gave his speech to Tikal before the final boss battle, telling her why they shouldn’t just seal Chaos back into the Master Emerald. I believe Sonic wouldn’t have been able to make this speech at the beginning of the game, because it’s a lesson he’s been learning since the beginning of the series, and it had just sunk in. That speech is the climax of Sonic letting his friends be part of his life, but it isn’t the finale.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic found himself framed for a crime he didn’t commit and thrown in Prison Island. How did he escape? He didn’t—at least not by himself. It was actually Amy who released Sonic from his cell while Tails was keeping Dr. Eggman busy. Not only could Sonic’s friends take care of themselves, but they can even be relied on to save the day when Sonic can’t. Sonic is shown to have learned this lesson when he gets trapped on the ARK, and about to be jettisoned to his apparent death; during that scene he tells Tails to take care of Amy, letting him know that Sonic has full faith in him to be a hero in Sonic’s absence. By Sonic Heroes, Sonic has become a true team player, treating Tails and Knuckles as equals as they worked together to stop Eggman.

A lot of this is intertwined with the next area of development I’m about to talk about, which is….

Sonic’s Confidence

Sonic the Character is well known for his confidence. A lot of people view him as cocky, but I’ve never seen him as such. However, I believe that’s because by Sonic Adventure 1, he’s already lost a good chunk of that cockiness (all games before SA1 had what I like to call ‘video game stories’, with little-to-no dialogue or cutscenes). One way a person can combat loneliness is by convincing themselves that they don’t need other people in their lives—they’re awesome enough by themselves! Sonic in particular wouldn’t need to try that hard to convince himself of this. He was able to defeat Eggman and destroy his base in Sonic 1 all by himself, and no-one even died. He got some help from Tails in Sonic 2 and 3, but he was basically support. Speaking of Sonic 3, this game basically started with Sonic, as Super Sonic, getting the super knocked out of him when Knuckles caught him by surprise. That definitely would have been a blow to Sonic’s ego. First Metal Sonic and now this gullible Knucklehead? Sonic keeps finding opponents who can actually go toe-to-toe with him.

Still, as far as Sonic was concerned, he needed to be as unstoppable as he believed himself to be. No-one else can do what he can, which means saving the world was his responsibility alone. Now I would like to point out something I said in the previous section: “Sonic had failed to protect his friends” in Sonic Adventure 1. Sonic experienced his first real failure, and what happened? Tails and Amy turned up OK without Sonic saving them. Sonic doesn’t always need to protect them, something that is further proven in Sonic Adventure 2, which also featured more of Sonic’s failure. First, he’s captured by G.U.N. after being framed by theft, then he meets Shadow—the guy who framed him—and learns that this lookalike can outclass him. First Knuckles, now this faker? Sonic keeps meeting people who can make dents in his ego. Speaking of which, he’s immediately captured by G.U.N. again, and needs Tails and Amy to rescue him. Then there’s the final boss battle, during which Shadow—who was fighting alongside Sonic—apparently dies, and although the two of them saved the planet from destruction, Sonic couldn’t save Shadow.

Sonic has realized that he’s not invincible, but he also doesn’t need to carry the whole weight of the world on his shoulders, because his friends can help. We know Sonic has learned this lesson, because at the end of Team Sonic’s story in Sonic Heroes, Sonic admits to Knuckles that he wouldn’t have been able succeed in this journey without him and Tails, and thanks him; and you know this is a big deal because Knuckles responds with an expression of utter shock! Does this mean Sonic Heroes is the end of this particularly character arc for Sonic? No, because now Sonic was underconfident. Once someone realizes they’re not as amazing as they believed themselves to be, they begin feeling inadequate. This is best illustrated in Sonic Unleashed. At the beginning of this game, Sonic is at his lowest point. Eggman  not only defeated Sonic’s super form, but used the power from it to split the planet apart. As a result of this failure, Sonic was turned into a beastly werehog, and he accidentally gave someone amnesia (or so he believes).

Later in the game, Sonic is found by Amy, but she thinks she’s confused a stranger for Sonic, so she apologizes and runs off to find her crush. Considering how much Sonic finds Amy’s crush on him annoying, you’d think Sonic would be delighted by this, but nope! He’s clearly saddened by this, and we get a mopey werehog. That’s because his werehog form is a reminder of his failure, and of his self-perceived inadequacy; but then Chip regains his memories and reveals he’s actually Light Gaia. Sonic theorizes that this is why he’s still himself on the inside when he turns into a werehog, because Chip was with him that whole time, but Chip tells Sonic that it was all Sonic. It was Sonic’s own willpower that kept him sane. I would also like to point out that this is the first main series game in a long time in which Sonic is the only playable character. That’s why I think it’s very important that the main theme of this game’s story is about Sonic realizing the power he had inside himself all along, regaining his confidence and becoming Super Sonic once more to defeat Dark Gaia.

In short, Sonic went from being overconfident to underconfident to confident. However, he’s still very impulsive.

Chaos Impulse Control

It only makes sense that someone with super speed would lack patience, and while Sonic has always been shown to be pretty impatient, it wasn’t until Sonic Lost World that it came to be an important part of a game’s story, at least explicitly. I feel like there are examples throughout the main series where Sonic’s impulsiveness was reflected in gameplay and level design. The only examples I can think of from the top of my head though are two from Sonic Adventure 1. Perhaps one of the reasons that orca attacked was because it was startled by Sonic running through its enclosure at such high speeds? Maybe Sonic was the one who accidentally caused that avalanche he had to snowboard away from? Who knows? All I do know, is that Sonic Lost World was the first game that really made full use of Sonic’s impulsiveness.

In SLW, Sonic recklessly got rid of the conch Eggman was using to control the Deadly Six, which made things worse. Sonic’s impulsiveness then got Tails captured and almost roboticized. In the end, Sonic acknowledged his mistakes and apologized to Tail; so does that mean Sonic has learned his lesson? Well, yes, but I believe this will continue to happen. Allow me to repeat myself: Sonic has super speed. Living life with such a power is definitely going to be like living with attention deficiency and hyperactivity. The world is always going to feel too slow for Sonic, which means he’s always going to be in a rush to make things faster. It’s something he’s probably going to live with for most of his remaining life, even if he’s aware of it. Luckily, he has friends who can support him by helping him reign himself in, or by helping him fix his mistakes when he is unable to.

Before I move on to the fourth and final area of Sonic’s character development, you may have noticed that there are three major Sonic games I haven’t mentioned so far. That’s because Sonic doesn’t go through any development in Sonic Colors or Sonic Forces. On the surface, that seems to be the same for Sonic Generations, but just think about it for a few seconds: Sonic is traveling through his past during this game. He is seeing a lot of reminders of his past, which could make him think back and reflect on the lessons he’s learned since beginning his adventures on South Island, reaffirming those lessons onto himself; and don’t forget, there are two of him in this game. While Modern Sonic is reflecting on his past, Classic Sonic is getting a glimpse of his future; of the person he could eventually become and the lessons he’ll need to learn to reach that point.

Still, that’s mostly headcanon. It would have been nice if it were more explicit though, and Sonic actually talked about this stuff at least a little. At least we got Sonic telling his past self that his future “is going to be great,” clarifying that Sonic is happy with where he is in life, and that he doesn’t hold any regrets. Which begs the question: What else is there left for Sonic? Well, there is one more part of himself that Sonic is still learning about….

Sonic’s Powers

How is Sonic able to move so fast? So far, fans haven’t been given an answer, and Sonic doesn’t appear to know either. Remember when I said Sega did a mock Q&A with Sonic? Well, in that Q&A, Sonic revealed that he was able to run at super speed for as long as he could remember, with no idea how or why he has this power. Although we have yet to be given an answer in these games, we have  gotten at least one game where Sonic was shown to be thinking about it, and one where he might have been.

When Sonic and Shadow were working together during the final boss battle in Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow exclaimed that he figured out that Sonic is the ultimate lifeform, not Shadow. How...is this possible? Shadow was supposed to have been created by Prof. Robotnik to be the ultimate lifeform. There are hints in the game that Robotnik took inspiration from Angel Island’s hieroglyphs, which we know from Sonic & Knuckles depict Sonic, but I want to focus more on the game’s final scene, which shows Sonic thinking about what Shadow said, and how Prof. Robotnik was trying to create the ultimate lifeform.

“Am I really the ultimate lifeform? What does that mean exactly? Does it have anything to do with my speed?” These are likely the questions going through Sonic’s head after these events. That scene hinted at Sonic having questions about his own origins, and he might have been given his first real clue; but has this come up again at all during the series? Perhaps it did, in Sonic Unleashed.

Remember how Chip said Sonic was still Sonic even when he was a werehog because of the power inside of him? Is that just Sonic’s inner strength and willpower, or could it also have something to do with him being the ultimate lifeform? That’s probably what Sonic’s thinking at this time, but who knows?

Conclusion

Sonic began his adventures as an arrogant loner with impulse control issues, but over time he has grown into a humble team player with impulse control issues. It doesn’t seem like a huge difference, but I think it’s pretty important. The next, logical thing to do with Sonic as a character is to explore the origins of his powers, at least if we want to see more character development, but it isn’t the only option. Another path writers could take is relapse, and I think Sonic Forces has created an opportunity for this route, despite its awful story. At the beginning of this game, Sonic gets defeated and imprisoned for six months. During that time, Eggman conquered most of the world, all because Sonic was there, basically proving Sonic’s former belief that he needs to be the one to save everyone as correct.

If I had to choose though, I’d rather see more about Sonic’s powers. Still, what should Sega do if Sonic’s character becomes fully developed? Is it time for a reboot? No, not necessarily. There’s nothing wrong with a flat character arc, after all. Instead of having Sonic improve himself, future stories could exclusively portray the characters around them going through character arcs as a result of Sonic’s actions and his relationships with them. That’s technically already something we see in most Sonic games, but that’s while Sonic is going through his own character arcs, at least in the major installments. In minor main series Sonic games, like Sonic Rush, it doesn’t seem like Sonic goes through any development, but the characters around him do. That could become the norm if Sonic completes his development, and that’s OK.

Here’s the big question though: Was any of this character development intentional? Probably not. At the very least, I doubt it was planned by Sega’s higher-ups, and more like the result of individual writers each trying to create the best stories they can, and then all of that work put together created a happy accident. Honestly, it doesn’t matter. Sonic lived and learned to open his heart, and to work with his friends to become stronger together, while also acknowledging the endless possibility of what’s inside of him. Sonic the Hedgehog is my favorite video game character, and realizing all of this just makes him even better in my point of view. With this analysis, I hope I’ll get people to appreciate his character as much as I do.

‘This doesn’t look so good…’

Sonic squinted his eye open, trying to feel the heavy breath pump his blood through him for added strength. He held one hand tightly on his bent knee, trying to remain standing.

‘Doesn’t feel so hot either…’

Metal Sonic had set the whole place up to blow, but with such a deep cut in Sonic’s chest, there was no way he could run through the pain and find it in time. ‘If I knew where it was… that might help, but at this point…’

Metal Sonic readied himself, sharpening his blade-fingers before a loud cry sounded out.

“Wha..? Amy?!” Sonic fell back, watching her fall from the top of the broken pillars and slam into Metal Sonic. “Ah!” he looked at his large gash across his chest, and quickly tried to hide it with his hands, smiling weakly as to disguise the true pain he was going through.

“Right on time.” He tried to sound fine, coming up with his best charming tone and line, but sadly… he still looked pretty beat up.

‘How do I play this off so she won’t be worried about me? I got to keep my composure…’

Amy continued to fight but Metal Sonic just flew up into the air, showing the ticking clock in his hand,… the bomb would go off soon.

He flew off, as Amy sighed and quickly dropped her hammer to rush to Sonic.

“Sonic! I’m so glad I found you, what happened?!”

“N-n…” He wanted to say ‘nothing’ but didn’t feel like lying. ‘A small fib wouldn’t hurt.’ he decided instead. “Never you mind me, where’s that bomb?”

“Bomb?!” Amy’s eyes widened, “Y-you let me deal with that, just get out of here, okay? Here,…” Gently, a little too sweetly, she began to loop her arms around his waist.

Sonic twitched, worried that if he made a sound, it would call out his bluffing. “Th-that’s okay, I’ll be fine, Amy… I can help-” before he could finish, Amy lifted him up.

The pain caught his breath and left his mouth open, no sound escaped but his eyes shook as his spine seemed to carry the weight of his body up like an escalator straight to his brain. He couldn’t handle being on his feet.

For the first few seconds, he almost lost consciousness, and his full weight fell into Amy.

“S-Sonic!” Her eyes now scanned his legs, wondering why he couldn’t stand. Her grip became tight in her panic at his sudden limpness and finally–

“Ahh!” He let out a sharp cry.

“What?!” Amy draped him over her shoulder, lightly bending her knees to let him lean on her as he regained his consciousness.

‘I… I can’t walk.’ Sonic’s eyes shook in fear. ‘A…Amy…’ he put his arms, quivering, around her.

Amy felt the sudden tight pull and straightened out, ‘What’s happening? Is he okay? Why can’t he stand..?’ she looked to the side of herself, trying to see his face but couldn’t.

She saw that his hands had moved from his chest and realized that he was severely injured.

“Sonic…” Her breath almost felt like a warm plea. Don’t die… Don’t die…

“Sonic, look at me!” She suddenly found a strength course through her, unimaginably blocking out her own fear.

He slightly lifted his head.

“You’re going to be alright! I’ve got to get you out of here. If this place blows, it blows! Nothing can destroy a Chaos Emerald, right? It’ll just be flung in the explosion.” She knew they needed that last emerald… but if Sonic couldn’t even stand, how was he to become Super Sonic?

Then again, if he was Super Sonic, he might rapidly heal…

‘I’ve gotta found that emerald… It’s Sonic’s best chance.’ She took a deep breath and began to sling Sonic over her, carrying him like a soldier in war.

Sonic’s pride was abolished in that instant, but it was replaced by an even deeper feeling of comfort.

As his vision blurred, the pain jumping with the bounce of her footfalls, he was quickly reminded of a small but tough little girl he once met so many years ago.

“I can help too! I-If you want me too… One day, Sonic! I’ll repay you ten-fold! Then you’ll have no choice but to marry me!”

He found himself falling deeper into that memory, “Amy…” his eyes drooped, he was losing too much blood. “You’ve grown up… so fast…” he closed his eyes, his head falling down and his body turning into a ragdoll in Amy’s grip.

“Hang on, Sonic!” Amy called back, moving through the debris as the whole building began to shake as though experiencing an earthquake.

Outside, Metal Sonic had his arms folded. He was standing on a sturdy tree branch and checked the clock in his hand. 00:30… seconds away from destroying his arch-rival.

“Sonic,… Sonic, wake up!” the frantic voice had Sonic’s eyes blink open. “Oh good! I’m glad you’re back, at least… somewhat.” She tapped his face, and he could tell by the night sky that only a little time had passed. The building was still there… Amy was still there… Amy…

He loopily blinked his eyes, trying to focus them, but he couldn’t exactly see her. There were many versions of her, and his hands weakly moved up to try and feel where she really was.

“Amy… Amy, where are we..?”

“Outside the base.” Immediately, as though reflex, Amy gripped his grasping hands to let him know she was there. “I promised, didn’t I? For all the times you’ve helped me out, I would help you too.”

“Heh…” He smiled, “I remember… It’s weird, I haven’t seen you like this… not sense… sense…” his eyes began to get tried again. “I swear, I’m not this unreliable.”

She chuckled through her tears, placing his hand against her cheek, “You’re not anything but perfect, Sonic. Stop that. You’re hurt. There’s nothing you could have done about it.”

“I’m reckless, Amy… But what about Metal? The Emerald..?” He felt some strength, pushing up off the ground somewhat.

“You don’t know?” Amy blinked, amazed.

“Know… what?” he suddenly looked to his arm.

Then his body…

The gash…

He was glowing bright yellow.

Amy giggled through her exhaustion, lowering her head before smiling up at him again, “You’re in your super form, Sonic… I got the emerald.”

The building exploded.

In an effort to regain himself, and return the favor, Sonic instinctively wrapped his arms around Amy.

A burst of Chaos energy shielded them from the blast, but as the light faded and the embers flared, Amy was shocked to see that he was still holding her firmly, his face serious and angled in a powerful dedication to keep her safe.

“S…Sonic! That was-!” she was about to dote on him but noticed his super form fading. “Sonic… Sonic, wait-!” She felt his arms fall and his body sway to the side. “No!!!” she grabbed him, shaking him as he returned to his normal form.

The gash was healed, but even with Chaos Energy, his natural strength couldn’t control how much chaos energy he used. “Sonic!!!”

Metal Sonic landed behind the two, watching the scene as he revved up his engine.

Amy looked behind her, holding Sonic still and glaring to Metal Sonic. “Don’t you have a heart!?” her mercy cry didn’t faze him.

He threw back his hand, ready for a showdown.

“I won’t let you hurt him…” She held him tighter, “You’re gonna have to get through me first!”

Without hesitating, Metal Sonic dashed forward and went to strike right through her to get to Sonic…

But Sonic smirked, opening his eyes.

“Thank you… for still letting me feel like your hero, Amy.” He pushed her forcefully aside to the ground as he swung a fist to Metal Sonic.

“Ahh! Sonic! No!” Amy rolled to the ground…

The last thing Sonic remembered was having a sharp pain in his chest again but also seeing Metal Sonic’s head fly off his body at his own impact.

His fist hurt… but not as badly as the numbing from all over his body at the chest pain.

His heart didn’t seem to beat as fast as usual.

Sonic also now felt surrounded in water… strange.

He blinked his eyes open, but the water blurred his vision and stung a little, so he tried to bat his arms about to get out, but his head bumped the top of the machine.

“H…Huh?” His voice sounded muffled. He tried to touch his mouth but something was in it’s way… a life mask?

He breathed in and out, even though he was surrounded by water, oxygen was still being pumped through him, and his muzzle was completely dry under the mask.

He put his hands to the clear cylinder and looked around. ‘Where am I? This doesn’t look like Tails’s place…’ then he looked down.

Surprise, Surprise…

Sonic smiled.

Amy was on her knees, her hands bundled together and up in a prayer with her eyes diligently closed in respect for whatever higher power she may have been begging with.

He felt–not pain–but adoration for her then. He knocked lightly on the clear glass, “Amy… Amy, look up.”

When she heard the banging, she wiped some tears from her eyes and gaped at him. “Sonic! You’re awake!”

He winked and gave her a thumbs-up, “I’m okay.”

She jumped to her feet and ran to the glass, placing her own hands up to match where his were, “They said you might not make it, but I knew, I knew you would!”

That feeling sank deeper in Sonic, soaring a relaxing feeling throughout his weary body… Amy… She really had grown up to be an amazing young woman.

He was listening to her, but most of his attention was on her lively eyes, glossy from previous worry, but filled with absolute, undeniable love in them.

“I waited here for you. So did Tails and Knuckles, Cream and Vanilla, we all were right here waiting for you! They said it might take days or weeks, but it’s only been a day and a night! I knew you’d pull through!”

He lightly moved his head to the edge of the glass, ‘Amy…’ her words weren’t the only thing comforting him, but her actions were healing him too.

She was smiling. She believed in him. Her whole body was jittery at his presence and she was moving from foot to foot, eager to embrace him, he supposed.

She turned her head to embrace the glass, “I’m glad… I’m so glad I could help you. You saved me again though… I guess my debt is never to be repaid enough.” she wiggled her head against the glass, as though nuzzling her affections through it to reach his heart. As her head swayed around, rubbing the glass, Sonic noted the wagging tail and grinned even more.

He then leaned his head further against the glass, “So you’re alright, then? My heroine?”

She suddenly blinked at the strange term and moved a little back, looking at him clearly now. “Your..?”

He gave her a kind look, “Well, you don’t think I’m not grateful, do you?”

“Oh!” she jumped right up, “No-no-no, of course not! B-but I’m usually the one who’s thanking you…”

“Nah, I always appreciate everything you do for me, Amy. Even if it’s a bit excessive, just seeing you happy and alive like this… it’s enough to make me want to say it too.” He beamed, bubbles coming out from the clear oxygen mask to spray around the healing water container he was currently bobbing in.

“Say… what again?” she tilted her head, blushing.

“Pfft! Oh no!” Sonic leaned away from the glass, “You’re really gonna ask me to say it again? No way!” he shook his head, before feeling a tinge of pain and playing it off, just rubbing his neck. “Ouch… that’s cruel.” he pretended he was acting as though Amy’s antics were painful to bear, but it only made Amy giggle and smile brighter.

“Hey, is that a rosy cheek?” He tapped where her cheeks were, “I’d better watch out, if I keep making you smile like this, your cheeks may hurt and forever be stained red!”

“Oh, you!” she patted the glass, “Shut up, shut up, shut up!!” she covered her face, turning her body back and forth like the lovesick girl he always knew.

“That easy, huh?” He muttered to himself, but he seemed to enjoy the exchange. “So? Metal me blasted?”

“Yep!” she hopped back from the glass.

This… made Sonic swim–to the best of his abilities–up against the glass again to see her. “And the Chaos Emeralds?”

“Safely back on Angel Island!” she swayed her body, still swooning at his eyes on her.

“…And I can see that your rascal nature hasn’t changed.” he flirted slightly, seeing her tail more vividly now that she was turning away from him. “Tell me, which moves faster? My feet or your tail..?”

“AH!” she slapped her hands to her butt to block the view of her tail and turned around with a face brighter than a tomato, “Scoundrel!” she teased, “Quit looking there!!!”

It hurt to laugh, but also felt so… so good!

“Hahaha! Never change, Amy!” he felt his body sink down a little in the cylinder before Amy stomped right back up to him.

“You need to be careful, you silly hedgehog… Hmph! The Doctors here at G.U.N say that you’ll need to make a full recovery before-”

“I think I want to see it up close…” He smirked, his eyes darting up to her in a playful threat.

“…H-HUH!?” She fidgeted a moment before realizing he was about to-…

“S-Sonic! H-hold on a second! This isn’t-! Ahhh!!!” She at first tried to persuade him otherwise but seeing him angle his feet to the back of the cylinder… she knew his mind was already made up. She waved her arms out and then finally bolted as he spin dashed through the observation glass, dehooking himself from the machine, and spinning the oxygen mask off of himself.

Water sprayed everywhere as Amy jumped out of the way, before looking up through her hands to see him stretch out his body, fighting through any lingering pain and getting his muscles back into shape.

“Now then…” after a few more stretches, he playfully smiled to her, “How should I repay my darling hero..?”

“You’re… You’re teasing me and I don’t like it!” she shook her legs out and got up on her feet, trying to scurry away, “I knew you would beat everyone’s expectations but I didn’t think you’d beat out my own!” she admitted, still blushing as Sonic laughed.

‘She thinks I’m serious, doesn’t she?’ the innocence of that notion left Sonic utterly moved by her affections for him. He gripped his heart in a teasing fashion, ‘She’s still as cute as ever, but I’m sorry, Amy. It’s only an act.’ He sped off in a different direction…

However, while searching for a way out, spooking some G.U.N soldiers along the way, he noticed the whole place was a maze…

When finding Amy, he would nip at her dress, as though still giving her the illusion he was after her… Though she safe-guarded her tail every time, he thought it endearing that she really thought he was after her…

‘I’ll have to remember that…’ Sonic mused to himself, ‘How to make Amy really happy after saving my life? Give the girl a scare for a bit. After all,’ he flicked his nose, feeling something delightful stir in his heart.

‘I do owe her an unrepayable debt.’

Knuckles Endangered Species #1 Behind the Scenes!

It’s been a while, but it’s finally time for another behind-the-scenes look at one of our stories!  This time we’ll be covering our latest release, as well as the story that had been visualized and started the earliest in our project: Part 1 of the Endangered Species rewrite.

As usual, let’s start with the cover.  Our ex-admin in charge of the entire rewrite, The Shadow Imperator, took inspiration from the covers for Sonic the Hedgehog #211 and 245, as well as an advertisement for Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.  Pencils, inks and colors were all done by @drawloverlala​, who managed to brilliantly blend all the designs together into something new and exciting.

The story begins immediately where the official #243 left off, with Sonic getting KO’ed by Metal Knuckles.  The robot doppelganger is quick to remind Lien-Da of his mission to monitor her and keep her in line, which is a nod to Sonic Universe #37, where Eggman told his Grandmasters that the Metal Series will be doing just that.

Since Lien-Da is the Grandmaster of her branch of the Dark Egg Legion, we decided her Kommissar should be Gae-Na, her old confidant that hadn’t been seen since StH #118.  She was given a heavy redesign by CrimDa, sporting a more realistic cybernetic eye as well as electric batons similar to Lien-Da’s electric whips.  Her absence up until this point was due to maternity leave, having only recently given birth to her daughter Demi-Na but was left to raise the girl alone after losing her husband Kanewisher to the Egg Grapes.

 You may have noticed that when Gae-Na knocks out Amy, she doesn’t seem particularly pleased about it.  As a mother, she doesn’t relish the idea of fighting children, but will do what it takes to ensure that her daughter can grow up in a stable echidna society, even if it’s a society ruled by Eggman.

For a much more minor echidna cameo, we see the return of Syntar, who hasn’t appeared since being unceremoniously knocked out by a time-traveling Lara-Su in StH #109.  Now a sergeant in Lien-Da’s army, he’s seen leading the Albion prisoners to be legionized... only to be unceremoniously knocked out yet again by Knuckles.  Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, I guess. 

We also see Komi-Ko comforting Bimmy Jr., a young echidna orphan whose father and namesake was tragically killed in the Egg Grapes.  Back in 243 he was only referred to as “young man”, since the legal issues at the time forbade his real name from being mentioned.

Another echidna character given a redesign by CrimDa is Crystal-La, the wife of Athair and Knuckles’ great-grandmother.  We decided to re-purpose her as the Mitre of the Albion Aurorium, in order to bring back of a glimpse of the religious aspects of echidna society that were largely ignored during Ian Flynn’s run of the comic.  Our initial redesign failed to take her significant age into account, so we made her look older in the final story.  Considering the fact that she considers her own great-grandson to be some sort of messiah, it’s easy to see that she’s gone a little kooky in her old age.

You may have noticed that Saffron Bee was also given a new wardrobe, which were actually based off of notes left by Aleah Baker for a redesign of her that was planned in the official comic  ShadImp felt strongly about giving her as big of a role in the rewrite as possible, as was the original intention.

Knuckles using his Warp Ring to attack Syntar was an idea from ShadImp’s co-writer for the remake, TuxKnux.  It was meant to demonstrate how Knuckles has had more practice controlling Chaos Energy, another example of which we’ll see later.    

In order to calm down a terrified Bimmy Jr., Saffron gives him her Nightopian Doll, which hasn’t been seen since all the way back in the Return to Angel Island arc.  Unfortunately, this ended up triggering her PTSD of the destruction of the Golden Hive Colony, as well as Charmy’s brain damage.

This can easily be missed on a first read, but here is when we first see Julie-Su taking a cloak from a defeated Legionnaire, which ends up being important later.

The cuffs binding Team Fighters and Remington were surprisingly difficult to draw, since we needed something that could hold them in place, but also free all of them instantly when deactivated.  In the end, electric shackles powered by a nearby generator seemed like the best solution.

The mural behind Lien-Da, meant to reference the Forgotten Wars, originally had a different design that was scrapped because it didn’t make sense for such a picture to be in Albion.  It was also based off of a cutscene in Sonic Chronicles, during Imperator Ix’s final speech to Knuckles.  Eventually, the original mural design was re-purposed for Emerl’s data file in StHO #249.

This is the first time that Remington and Lien-Da have met since Enerjak’s rampage, so it was important to have the interactions between them be meaningful.  Remington may have suffered greatly during and after his time being the brainwashed Grandmaster of the Frost Legion, as well as being the son of Lien-Da’s hated brother Kragok, but he hasn’t allowed the trauma to diminish his strong sense of justice and has grown as a person because of it.

Although hostages causing a panic among their captors is generally not considered a good idea, Tails dropping the bombshell (no pun intended) that Eggman could blow up the legionnaires at any moment does help upset Lien-Da’s control of the situation, proving instrumental to her defeat later.

At this point in the story, Thrash hasn’t directly made his move yet, but the wheels are clearly in motion.  Originally ShadImp was going to have Thrash’s plan be identical to the official Endangered Species, sending all the echidnas away in a super-charged Warp Ring.  It took him a while to come up with a different plan, one that requires a sample of echidna DNA.  Incidentally, this is also Gae-Na’s only other appearance in the issue, as she was put on patrol duty after the initial battle with Team Fighters.

The showdown between Knuckles and Metal Knuckles may be seen as disappointingly short, but ShadImp made clear that he prioritized meaningful storytelling over elongated fight scenes.  Plus, Knuckles serving only as the distraction while Saffron destroys the robot with a hijacked turret and Julie-Su sneaks off incognito does a good job showcasing that the Chaotix came into the fight much better prepared than Team Fighters.

Also worthy of note is the legionnaire’s dismissive attitude towards Komi-Ko and the other Albionites.  Since about half of the Legion gave up on fighting and accepted Enerjak’s offer to migrate to Albion, it stands to reason that the ones who chose to stay are the most fanatical and loyal to the Legion’s cause.

Another minor echidna cameo is a younger Cobar, who was originally only seen in the 25 Years Later storyline.  At this point in time he’s still a member of the Legion, although his timid nature appears to be unchanged.

As well as demonstrating Remington’s character development, this scene does a good job showing that even the most loyal legionnaires are sick of the pointless wars they’ve fought in.  Lien-Da is the only truly evil person among all of them, and her grasp on them is crumbling rapidly.

As was mentioned earlier, having the disguised Julie-Su destroy the generator powering the shackles was a quick and easy way to get Team Fighters back into the action, as well as converge the two plots occurring simultaneously in this issue.

Having Wynmacher deal the final blow against Lien-Da was both an opportunity to give the non-combatant echidnas a chance to shine, as well as a callback to his very first appearance in Knuckles the Echidna #6, where he performed a similar tackle and mentioned his varsity days.

When Riggo first penciled this panel, he had drawn Kneecaps as more the size of a toddler than an infant, which was corrected in the final story.

This panel was originally going to feature some good old Sonic & Knuckles action, but ended up being only Knuckles using Thunder Arrow.  This is the other example of his improved mastery of Chaos Energy, as unlike the previous Guardians he doesn’t need to be within short range of the Master Emerald to use it.  It’s still not perfect though, as just using it once is shown to tire him out quite a bit. 

Finally, we have Thrash making his grand entrance.  He was originally drawn with an entire pack of Devil Dogs around him, but it’s actually an important plot point that he only has two with him at the moment, so this was changed in the final version.

That’s it for this post, but unlike the other stories, this one was a revision of an even earlier rewrite, one that was started on and scrapped before ASO was even a thing.  Next time, we’ll be going BEHIND behind the scenes at ShadImp’s original Endangered Species remake!

sonic boom but i insert a bunch of other characters in it. bonus gay

mighty and ray - sonic’s childhood friend, mighty, moves to bygone island alongside his adopted brother ray. the two join team sonic, though it seems like mighty doesn’t just see sonic as a pal

bean - bean helps eggman out with some Crime Shit, but leaves his side towards the end since he thinks the guy’s too bossy

bark - when the colder regions of bygone island starts to become strangely warmer, he sets out to figure out the issue. its eggman’s machine fucking around with nature, which leads to bark angrily destroying the thing. bean is amused by this and think hes “cool and interesting”, so the two become friends. episode is usually pretty silent bc he doesnt talk here

fang and also rouge - both of them discover the chaos crystals and try to steal it from one another, only for team sonic to take them and place them in a safer area

witchcarters - wendy places various curses around bygone island, and with tails going unaffected by it, its up to him to stop her and her cronies

battle kukku - the kukkus attempt to claim bygone island for themselves, but eggman won’t let them have it. meanwhile, tails has a bit of rivalry with the son of their leader and the owl guy with the weird name wants to one up eggy

honey - amy buys a new dress (which resembles modern amy’s dress, but longer), leading to honey growing in popularity among the citizens. she thanks amy and starts to generously gift her...to rather severe degrees. she eventually tones it down and the two become friends

tiara (i know shes cut but idc) - tiara and her dad visit bygone island out of curiosity towards the chaos crystals, though it becomes difficult as the safe haven for them has tight security

gamma and omega - both were built by eggman (and also are technically in the same series in this? idk boom’s an au it doesnt matter) and later betray him after seeing the good in nature. they meet the cubots and adjust to their new lives

vanilla, cream, and cheese - all three try to find ways to defeat eggman and other villains without using much violence and instead peace. but in the end, they learn that sometimes conflicts have to have disagreeable endings

espio and charmy - espio’s clan disbands, so he searches for a new one-only to find himself caring for an orphaned bee

tikal and the whole echidna tribe tbh - team sonic take a trip to angel island after knuckles gets really nostalgic over it, only to be shocked upon seeing echidnas living there

chaos - one of wendy’s spells still prevail, and manages to spread onto angel island. this spell gives water life, and things quickly go off the rails due to chaos’ inconsistent form changes

maria and gerald - eggman’s relatives find him, and are extremely disappointed by his choices in life. since gerald inspired him when he was young, they send him and hope he can knock some sense into the guy. meanwhile, maria (who’s adopted which is why shes still young in this) meets a mysterious black and red hedgehog

emerl - cream befriends one of tails’ new creations. things go haywire, but he’s rebuilt into gmerl afterwards since cream got horribly upset over the gizoid’s betrayal

silver - while testing his time travel skills, he finds himself stuck in the past, leading team sonic to teach him everything

blaze - a faraway kingdom messages team sonic. they request help, as they have been taken over by the battle kukku. when they arrive, the king and queen are missing, so they team up with their daughter (obviously blaze) in order to defeat battle kukku again (note: stories of team sonic have been told by travelers going from one place to another)

marine - while making sure that the kingdom’s at safety, blaze meets a raccoon that immediately attaches to her, as she’s her biggest fan. she isn’t fond of her at first, but when sonic tells blaze the story of how he met tails, she realizes marine isn’t much different from tails back then and decides to take her under her wing

mephiles - shadow comes across a scepter that unleashes a silhouette that copies his appearance. said silhouette turns into an actual hedgehog, and follows him around endlessly

elise - a human mysteriously washes ashore on bygone island, with only the memory of heat and sun. she doesn’t seem to know the existence of mobians either, so team sonic n friends have to help her adjust and discover her memories (also why does she got fire powers) (theres probably an ep featuring both mephiles and elise figuring out theyre both connected somehow)

the babylon rogues - a team of skateboarders challenge sonic to a contest, so their leader can prove that hes better than him. except theres no skating rink at bygone island so they have to struggle through the process of getting one

chip - sonic comes across a fairy, who immediately latches onto him. since chip is the type of fairy that “becomes attached to the person that first sees/rescues them”, sonic can’t really get rid of him and instead just has to go with it. the two are pals by the end

the wisps - honestly colors in itself could be a multipart boom ep, so imagine that game but with team sonic + amy, sticks, mighty, ray, and chip

the deadly six - team sonic discovers a magical conch, and upon blowing it, they gain the attention of some weird creatures. as it turns out, they somehow landed on bygone island and have to return to their home planet; lost hex

infinite and the jackal squad - a new punk squad starts causing a ruckus in bygone island, which eventually leads to a takeover. shadow finally starts taking maria’s advice and helps out with pushing them back down, though they end up joining eggman’s side

gadget - sonic gets a new big fan. hes weary at first, but learns that gadget isn’t as obsessive as the last one and that big fans don’t automatically mean they are creepy. its wholesome

An Assorted Mess of Ideas

Various ideas related to my Sonic Boom fanon that I have no idea how to organize or connect into coherent storylines. :P All I know is that I want to make some kind of series (preferably a comic, although I’m not too confident in my ability to make one ^^; so it might have to be a written fic thing instead, we’ll see :P).

I will try not to stray TOO far from canon; ultimately though, this is my own personal continuity, so I can (and will) change some things here and there if I want to.

Anywho, someone once suggested that I make a post listing my ideas, so here they are (the ones I remember off the top of my head anyway):

Sonic and Knuckles are especially close in this universe; their friendship develops into romance overtime (because I’m trash).

The destinies of Sonic, Knuckles, and Shadow are all intertwined in some way (this also affects certain friends and family to a slightly lesser extent?).

Shadow at some point is found and attacked by some old enemies, who actually almost succeed in killing him. However, he is rescued by a good samaritan, who cares for him as he recovers: Rouge the Bat. (This is what kicks off his personal story arc, which deals with his backstory, his developing relationship with Rouge–and how these events change him forever.)

As time goes by, not only does Rouge end up becoming Shadow’s first friend since Maria (and the first person he could open up to about his past), but the two eventually fall in love as well (again, I’m trash :3c).

Sonic never met his father or knew much about him (not including when he was a baby since he wouldn’t remember that). Unbeknownst to him, his father has been searching for him for years, and refuses to give up hope no matter what.

(He does find him eventually, though by this time Sonic is a young adult with a small family of his own.)

Knuckles (and everyone else) thinks he’s the last echidna, but he actually isn’t. At some point there’s an arc where his tribe is found–and he’s forced to confront all of the traumatic memories he’s kept repressed for so long…

I want to show certain characters’ backstories through flashbacks.

I also want to do personal arcs for those characters, which focus on their growth and development (as well as their relationships with other characters).

I intend to flesh out the characters more in general and (hopefully) give them better characterization than the show tends to.

There might be some arcs that are sort of “adaptations” of stories from the main Sonic series, having them be this universe’s equivalent of those events (if that makes any sense).

For example, I had an idea for some kinda prequel thing that features Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles as kids (from before they met Amy or Sticks) and is basically a remake of the OVA.

I also wanted to rework/use elements of Sonic 06’s story. (Don’t judge me.)

I also had this idea for an arc where someone screws up the timeline or something, creating a bad future where everyone is terrorized by an evil cyborg overlord (whose identity is a secret for now, mwahaha!)

Of course this idea also involved Silver from that future travelling to the present time for help–so it’s possible I might actually be able to combine this idea with the Sonic ‘06 idea. (Though how I’d work in stuff like Mephiles/Iblis/Solaris, I’m not sure.)

You bet I’m gonna want to do something with the Werehog. Not sure what, though.

Tbh, I kinda wanted to do an arc involving Sonic and Amy attempting a relationship but having it go badly and them realizing they’re not right for each other (and Sonic eventually ending up with Knuckles instead)–the only reason for my hesitation being that Sonic and Amy’s ship is THE most popular ship in the entire fandom, meaning that I’d just end up p*ssing everyone off with this idea. :P

Development/fleshing out of Zooey, and Tails’ relationship with her.

Sonic and Knuckles eventually adopting baby Blaze.

Some conflict where Shadow and Rouge are together, but have a fight and break up, and Shadow is depressed because she was the first person he was ever willing to give his heart to–and now he feels he’s ruined that forever (he’s been trying so hard to be a better person but is finding that change is not an easy nor quick process). But with some help from Team Sonic, Shadow and Rouge are able to reconcile and repair their relationship.

An alternative idea to this was that the two stayed broken up for one or two years, only for Shadow to suddenly find out he has a son.

Regardless of which of the above ideas I end up going with, Shadow and Rouge have a temporary breakup, get back together, have a son, and are happy.

The son in question is none other than Silver.

Shadow is concerned that he’ll never be a good father. Sonic, having already had some experience with raising Blaze, is willing to help him out however he can (and they officially aren’t enemies anymore!)

(This also means that Silver will be a little younger than Blaze–preferably not too much younger though; I need them to still be close in age.)

An arc involving the alternate dimension would definitely need to happen at some point.

Lots of focus on the development of Sonic and Knuckles’ relationship (I want the transition from bromance to romance to feel natural, ya know?)

An arc about Sonic’s father’s story and his travels as he sets out to find his son.

I had this idea that along the way he finds these two orphans and ends up adopting them–said orphans being Sonia and Manic! (So in this universe they wouldn’t be related to Sonic by blood, but still a part of his family :3)

An arc involving the appearance of a powerful hedgehog named Nazotoki (who is based on this image, though my take on the character will be female and have a modified design). She also seems to have some sort of connection with one of the other characters…(but I won’t spoil it for you!)

Something where Shadow encounters Black Doom and they have an “I am your father” scene…

I want the Freedom Fighters to show up at some point (and pair Sally and Nicole together, because once again I’m trash).

Vanilla and Cream will probably appear at some point, I’m thinking as Rouge’s neighbors or something (so Shadow would meet them). I’d like to include Cheese too, but I’m not sure if Chao would exist in this universe?

Knuckles starts out acting a little more like in the show (though a lot of that is still toned down in this AU), but then something happens that basically forces him to grow up--what that is, I’m not sure yet.

A prequel arc that combines elements of Rise of Lyric and Shattered Crystal.

The Sonknux subplot technically begins in the prequel arc, but I think what will really set it off will be something where Knuckles almost loses Sonic, and ends up realizing how much Sonic really means to him.

Something also causes them to open up to each other about stuff they’ve never admitted to anyone else before, bringing them closer as a result. (One idea was Sonic having nightmares related to recent events and Knuckles trying to help him sleep better, or something like that.)

I probably forgot a bunch of stuff, so I’ll update this post whenever I think of anything else. :P

Anyway, I’d really like some feedback/suggestions! Help me make this fan series idea a reality! (Please)

Sonic Boom Season 1 Review

The Sonic Boom franchise as a video game series is not seen with much positivity. After the release of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, this spin off of the Sonic franchise was met with much derision and with good reason. The game is a failure in game design and originality and doesn’t understand what Sonic as a character and a game fundamentally is. However, accompanying the game was a brand new cartoon series based in the game’s world. Simply titled Sonic Boom, the series has had some success and is currently in its second season. As a Sonic fan who didn’t like Rise of Lyric, I decided to give this show a chance due to positive feedback and watched the first season on Hulu. Is is better than the games and how does it hold up on its own?

The show follows the misadventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, and Sticks the Jungle Badger as they take on Dr. Eggman, who often devises evil plans to take over Seaside Island, as well as schemes that mildly inconvenience the crew. Some episodes also follow the crew helping the denizens of the nearby Hedgehog Village, as well as some disputes and shenanigans amongst themselves and other random occurrences around the island. Each episode is its own contained story and feature a mix of action and comedy, with an emphasis on the latter.

Each of the characters have their own distinct personalities and typically bounce off each other pretty well. Sonic is arrogant and laid back, Tails is intelligent and ambitious, Knuckles is dumb and competitive, Amy is bossy and energetic, Sticks is paranoid and down to earth, and Eggman is a smart aleck yet buffoonish. Unfortunately, some characters are more fleshed out than others. Sonic, Tails, and Amy are used often in the show but Knuckles and Sticks typically get the shaft, and are usually just one note jokes, specifically Knuckles is dumb and Sticks is paranoid. Sometimes it feels like some of the reoccurring characters like Dave the Intern and Fastidious Beaver have more development than they do.

The comedy in the show is fairly basic but entertaining. Nothing too daring or clever and will definitely delight a young child. Some jokes land better than others, specifically the more lucidly aware ones that tend to tie back to the Sonic franchise as a whole. However, the ones that don’t are those that play it too safe. Some of the jokes lack punch and I think it’s because they’re holding back. The show does not seem to be afraid to pull from society as it is today, but will sometimes smooth out the more harsher references or inspirations to the point of becoming disingenuous. I also find it odd that for an action comedy show, there’s a lack of physical gags. Especially with a character like Knuckles, I thought there would be more of it. When it is there, Knuckles is usually the recipient, but it is few and far between.

The show is well acted. Roger Craig Smith is exceptional as Sonic as well as Dave the Intern who you can’t even tell is the same actor. Cindy Robinson as Amy Rose gives the character more personality than she ever had in the games, and Nika Futterman as Sticks is enjoyably passionate in the role. Unfortunately, the dialogue is inconsistent as some lines are witty and charming and other are stilted and awkward. Speaking of writing, the plots tend to be solid for the most part, putting Sonic and crew in funny and interesting circumstances, but a problem that I was surprised by is that a lot of the episodes end too abruptly. Whatever the conflict of the episode was typically gets resolved entirely too quickly. Some episodes end before the conflict actually is resolved.

Overall, Sonic Boom leaves something to be desired despite some strong voice acting and some occasionally strong jokes. This show is definitely better than the Wii U game but I still wouldn’t classify this as good. It does have bright and colorful animation and some charming scenarios, but the overly safe jokes and spotty writing keeps this from being something I’d recommend. It’s harmless, unmemorable, and merely okay, nothing more and nothing less. Perhaps Season 2 is better.

Let's talk about Sonic the Hedgehog

More specifically, how Sega could make a new Sonic RPG, reuse the create an avatar feature, include throwback, and give Pokémon a big kick up the arse. Let's pretend this game exists.

You know how Dr. Eggman creates robots, or badniks? What if they went rogue? All his past creations too. They broke free of his programming and just went wild? Now, imagine that world a few years later. The badniks were tamed by the people. They can self replicate, but nobody knows how. Used as pets, labour, and most importantly, competitive fighting. There were rumours of some of the boss badniks out there too. But nobody has ever found them. Also, Eggman has just disappeared.

You wake up as your avatar and your goal is to be the best robot fighter. So your enroll to the league. You get given one robot to start with. A Crabmeat, Buzzbomber, or a Chopper. You have a mini battle with the other two to learn about type advantages. You can get the other two later in the story as gifts for completing tasks.

You then get approached by Tails. He wants you to document every badnik. He's always been very unsure about all this, and he wants you to capture one of every kind so he can see if something is up. He gives you a means to caught them, and control them. Probably a hacking device that can get upgraded, as well as a pda with a blank sheet. Basically a pokedex. It'll tell you what game they were first met, some basic info, and most importantly, locations to find them, and their encounter rate.

You then have to go around the worlds and search for clues, capturing robots, while also keeping some for training and fighting. You meet other characters who are in the tournament who test you. Kind of like gym battles. Team Chaotix would be your biggest rivals.

You meet Sonic, and Knuckles too. Now they have tracked down boss badniks, and have suspicions that they are after chaos emeralds. They're destroying the land and it's not good. They work with you and help you track down, and capture the bosses. The bosses can be summoned like the rides in Sun/Moon.

Over time, you uncover a signal that alerts Sonic to his greatest fear. Metal Sonic is out there. You also discover new badnik blueprints, which is suspicious. Turns out, Eggman was hiding the whole time. He successfully has infiltrated every home with badniks, and once he has gathered all the emeralds will turn them back on and take over. You invade his lab, in the sky of course, and overthrow him. Destroy his control mechanism, and he gets arrested. That'll be the first roll credits.

You the have the end game stuff, which is the tournament final 8, collecting everything, which becomes a lot easier now you have beat Eggman and updated the pda with a tracker for every undiscovered badnik. You then also learn of the location of every Metal Sonic incarnation. MechaKnuckles, and the Tails Doll, as well as Omochao, and Emerl.

Combat would be turn based, but your speed stat influences how quick your recharge would be. You can't fight the robots, or bosses directly because you're not Sonic, Tails, etc. However, they can be used as summons for a massive attack. Basically Z-moves. One per battle, and each one needs to recharge. The more major characters and boss badniks you meet and beat, or help, the more different summons you unlock. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles (Maybe Amy, Shadow, and Rouge) can get upgraded attacks.

The capturing will give you a choice at first whether you want to send it to research, or keep in your personal collection for battling. That way you have insentive to catch them all for unlocks, but only keep the ones you like. The unlocks would be cosmetic choices for you, and badniks. New paint jobs, and accessories that you can place wherever. And yes, you can give each badnik a nickname.

They level up and get stronger via upgrading attacks, speed, defences, and mods. Mods need parts of badniks you've fought and destroyed, so you're encouraged to fight as many things as you can. There wouldn't be evolutions or breeding, but you can mod attacks from similar badniks. Like giving Chopper the ring sapper ability from those piranha bots in Sonic 3. Or Crabmeat burst fire, or a claw launching ability, or the shield from the crabs in Sonic 2. There will be a chao garden kinda deal for everything you sent to Tails for research too.

You're also encouraged to get a large diverse team, because if one of your badniks get destroyed, you need to send it for repairs to Tails, and that takes them out of a few battles. You can also buy repair kits to restore them immediately. You're given a few at the start. If you run out of fighting badniks, you have to pay a ring penalty to Tails to work extra hard to fix them immediately.

Once you've caught everything, including all the boss badniks, Omochao, Emerl, and Metal Sonics, as well as helped all the characters, and beat the tournament. The game will have the true ending. Eggman busted out of prison, and summoned his mech suit. He escapes into space, and you have to fight him with everything you've got. He goes through a series of his most iconic boss fights and you have to take him down with everything you've captured, carefully and using smart choices. Once you destroy everything, and then beat him in the mech suit. The game is yours to train and do multiplayer stuff.
