This is a genuine question! Would Moonpaw in your world be Intersex? And how would the clans view it? I worry due to how in canon, the clans can seem...sexist towards female cats, and I don’t know how they'd react to a intersex cat.
BB!Moonpaw is going to be intersex yes
It's actually seen as very special! Clan culture's concept of gender is Trinary. There are THREE genders, and none of them match completely to the US/UK's concept of gender roles.
1. "Woman"/Molly/Yaow.
Given to AFAB cats by default. This gender is expected to have an active, argumentative role in the Clan. They are socialized to have a domineering and active role in their personal relationships, while also doing the emotional and physical labor of taking care of their camp and kits.
The "Bailey" to a tomcat's "Motte." They are supposed to be the secondary, smarter, more deadly line of defense against threats.
2. "Man"/Tom/Ssuf.
Given to AMAB cats by default. This gender is expected to be passive but protective, giving ground to a molly or a gib who "understands the nuances of camp better." They're socialized to spend more time out of the camp and do more hunting and patrolling than their counterparts.
The gender is named for the sound of spraying, as marking territory is what Ssuf cats are most associated with.
In these genders, being trans is more normalized than not living according to the roles. They have a different idea of being queer compared to us!
"Third Gender"/Gib/Meewa.
This doesn't translate into English very well. We would call it nonbinary by our standards, but this is a full gender role to Clan cats.
Gibs can be assigned at birth when they display sacred signs, such as closely resembling a dead nyams, having extra claws, being perfectly identical twins, or having intersex traits. It is a role associated with wisdom, conflict resolution, and long-term planning.
They are often socialized to be more intuitive and spiritual, but from a young age they might get given more responsibility than they're ready for. Especially if they're silver or gray, a color associated with wisdom.
I usually keep using the pronouns from canon because of 1. Simplicity since the whole fandom is used to them, 2. The fact that Clanmew doesn't use gendered pronouns anyway, and 3. It helps keep my xey/xem drops more special. But a LOT of cats are actually meewa in-universe.
Gray Wing the Wise
Yellowfang
Deadfoot
Ashfoot
Whitestorm
Spottedleaf
Blackstar
Waspwhisker/star
Duckfur
Kestrelflight
Cinderheart
Poppyfrost
Jayfeather
Dovewing
Shadowsight
There are also cats who have transitioned away from being Meewa. This is how both Hazeltail and Mousewhisker, identical twins, are transfem and transmasc respectively. I am planning for Frostpaw to ALSO transition out of the meewa gender, she will be transfem.
So Moonpaw, with xeir half-moon face, intersex traits, and connection to the moonpool? That is a DEAD RINGER for a meewa-gendered gib. The only thing she's missing is any amount of gray. I am going to use She/Xey for her going foward.
(I can see her receiving something silvery as a gift someday. Probably from one of her parents-- I'm currently leaning towards FlipBay or ShellFern PRETTY hard, and Flipclaw or Fernstripe would do something like that I think.)
(Fern would be more of a trader though I think. I feel like she's not very dexterous, but WICKED smart. Flip is discovering a talent for toymaking.)
This is actually a part of BB's Clan Culture reworks I play a lot more loosely than other bits, but it's still a lot of fun!

SOME FUN FACTS
tierney is a los angeles native
she is an industry nepo baby !! her family all works in the legal side of the eterntainment industry and she absolutely used that to her advantage !! she gives typical nepo baby vibes about that though
however, about a year after college, her parents were like, you need to get serious and stop being ... well, you, so she decided to move out to new york despite being such a true blue california native, and decided to try "supporting herself" "without their help"
she chose to live in new jersey because she is sorta obsessed with jack antonoff. but like in a casual cool way, not in a fangirl way (lie)
her other music hero is alexandra patsavas
tierney also has a podcast discussing music with one of her friends, as well as works as a sound engineer at the stone pony every once in a while when they need someone local
she has a MASSIVE record collection - it’s her pride & joy. she is definitely a regular at groovy graveyard, so if you have a character who works/shops there, they almost definitely have bumped into her
basically tierney lives, breathes, eats & sleeps music - it’s her entire life and she is insanely passionate about it. don’t ask her for her opinion on an artist unless you want an entire verbal essay and possibly a power point
as it is, tierney is a true music junkie, so she doesn’t dislike anything. she can find pros and cons and merits to pretty much any artist and enjoys talking about why they’re popular or they should be, or why they have influence/are good/talented/relevant, whatever the argument for them is
basically if someone asks her about music, be prepared to just have to listen to her rant about it for a million years
she’s kinda a hippie, she’s constantly going to yoga or mediating or trying new herbal concoctions or acupuncture or cupping or buying new crystals or whatever - any ailment she suggests yoga for rather than, like, going to a doctor? again, la native here
tierney is all about trusting in the universe
she’s like…wildly chaotic. she will try anything once (and usually more than that), goes out all the time, has the weirdest sleep schedule (maybe just never sleep in general), and yet somehow is always a ball of energy
other than groovy graveyard, places she'd frequent in asbury park are pipe dreams smokeshop, wonder bar, madam marie's, the abandoned casino & carousel, paranormal books & curiosities, sandoval dollar, & silverball retro arcade
overall, tierney is really laidback & chill & loves to vibe & party and gets along with pretty much anyone
CONNECTION IDEAS
i would love people who have been her podcast co-host ?? i kinda imagine it's a bit of a revolving door since she's insufferable lmao
give me a good luck, babe! inspired toxic situationship and i will love you forever
more will come soon but these are the first two ideas off the top of my head
and always down to brainstorm or fill tierney into anything that would fit !!

Made a Pickles fan kid. I’m drawing her but it’s too much work. Just know her name is Dillanne but her nickname is “Dill” and “Annie”
Pickles was gonna give her up for adoption (he found out about her way too late and late term feetus deletus was not an option even in the messed up metalocalypse universe) but grew attached to her once he looked into her eyes when she was born
I was going to go with trans pickles for this but Dillanne, like all my OC’s is black (well mixed because Pickles is her dad) but then again it would be extra funny if Pickles didn’t know who the father was and then out pops this child who’s pale at birth but then after a minute he notices her skin is dark because I think that shit would be hilarious where one of the band members is just like “Pickles are you aware that your baby is black ?” and he notices and is like “Holy shit… well that kinda narrows it down ?”
And then it’s just a Liam Gallagher situation because you have this visibly black child with her pale ass father .
Also cue people not knowing how genetics work because they constantly don’t believe that Dillanne is actually his.
Also Calvert and Molly treating her way different than Seth’s kid because she’s visibly black .

The Final Light
Tumblr media
[Image ID: an in-universe drawing of a large, snarling lynx with several smaller felines bowing to them. The lynx's head is framed by a sun, like a halo. The bowing cats are lined up in three rows, and gradually getting smaller, as if shrinking. End ID]
Years ago, four cat colonies once lived together, sharing the wilds equally. These four colonies, while separate, all were bound together by their belief in the four Seasonal Deities, and their teachings and laws. They held festivals together, helped each other in times of need, and prospered through the difficult seasons against the harsh wilderness.
Two other groups shared the land as well, despite not being colonies themselves, and the colonies saw these two factions as equals and respected their ways. They invited them to join their celebrations and began trade with them, and slowly the colonies’ worlds grew bigger.
The colonies’ knowledge expanded, new tools were discovered and made, and soon fire itself was caught in the paws of the colonies, theirs to use as they wished. The future for the colonies seemed bright.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Call of Dreams, a tan and black molly, sits in the middle of the scene. Several black silhouettes surround her, all of their eyes watching her. A single star hangs above her head, attached by a string. Call of Dream's face is covered with a black bar. She is crying. End ID]
However, during one of these festivals, a cat from the Colony of Bones stepped forward. Her name was Call of Dreams, and she claimed that the gods had come to her. They warned her of monsters who would attack those who strayed into the light of the sun, and kittens cursed to live in darkness.
The colonies were quick to distrust Call of Dreams. The gods only delivered messages to specific cats, those who were chosen at birth, and even then they only ever communicated through the spirits of the deceased. Never before had a god spoken to a living cat directly. To see the Seasonal Deities in person would be an honour, one which a lawbreaker like Call of Dreams wasn't deserving of. Several months ago she was caught with a house cat, who she would confess to being her spouse. Her colony had lost all trust in her since for this break in the law.
The cats spoke openly of these thoughts, ridiculing her and driving her away from the celebration. Her colony apologized for the outburst, and the festival continued, many forgetting the incident entirely. The warning, however, was very real, and the next dawn the colonies were attacked.
Large and violent creatures crashed through the colonies’ walls, attacking anything they could see. The colonies tried to stand their ground, dozens of cats united in a single battle for survival. But, even then, not a single monster was taken down, and no mercy was shown to the defenders. Survivors were few after the carnage, which would become known as the Dawn of the Final Light, and they ran in fear and terror.
They named these creatures the broken ones, after the tall ones they so closely resembled- creatures that stood on their hind legs, talked in odd voices, shaped and created by a spiteful god who was exiled for their hubris. Surely, the broken ones were another cursed creation, born from the anger of a cruel god?
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Talon of Hawk, a tortoiseshell tom with brown eyes, is walking through a dark forest. There is a dead fish in his mouth. End ID]
Soon, the survivors began to rebuild. The broken ones were attracted to the scents and noise of life, but mercifully they slept during the night, allowing life to flourish under the moon. Cats spread across the territory, some simply looking to survive another day, while others sought to find a way to live under the sun once more.
A handful of factions, able to survive by wielding their knowledge of the broken ones to their advantage, rose to power in the absence of the once proud colonies. However, many turned their backs on the new faction’s promises of safety and security.
Tradition states that a colony leader, known as a commander, must pass four trials to be deemed worthy of the title- a feat that no cat has been able to accomplish since the Final Light. The gods were silent, leaving many to wonder what would become of the tattered remains of the colonies.

BIOGRAPHY
Calliope was born third into the Wallace household of what would eventually make the family be graced by three children, two girls and one boy. The family was existent of nothing but love and respect, creating a safe and warm household. Calliope could bury herself in the many books that the household contained, even if Calliope only liked the pictures at such a young age. She would make a pillow fortress under her father's desk or read in her big sister's bed.
Calliope was always a studious child. An inquisitive nature as soon as she was able to crawl around, much to the terror of her parents. She was friendly to whomever would come across her path, making a lot of friends from a very young age, despite the warnings of her parents about stranger danger. Yet if there is anything Calliope's life would prove to her, it's that it's the ones closest to you that betray you and let you down.
At the mere age of five, the Wallace household collapsed. Giovanna's kidnapping was followed by grim atmospheres. Calliope barely saw her parents smile anymore, instead crying as they kept giving interviews and statements about wanting their daughter back. Within a year, Calliope hadn't just lost her sister, but she had to watch how two coffins were lowered into the ground, as the guilt and remorse had been too much too handle for her parents to handle, leaving behind their other two children.
Calliope and her brother ended up with their aunt and uncle, who from the get go made it clear to the two that they weren't happy with their presence, as they wouldn't be able to live their life of traveling anymore and instead taking care of two brats they never even wanted to have. Their abuse was manageable at first, since Calliope had her brother. The shouting, the evenings without dinner, the smack on the heads and backs. Never the legs and arms. The two siblings held their heads down, focusing on school work playing with dolls with each other.
Calliope was too young at that time, unaware that her sister had escaped and that her aunt and uncle had refused to take her in and was instead cast away to a godmother of theirs. This was only relied to her later on by her brother when she was older. Calliope never really had an opinion. It had been her and her brother for so long, for the most of her recollection that she had her most important person with her. That all changed when her brother decided to run away from home when she was eleven, leaving her alone with her abusers. The punishment got worse. Involuntary haircuts, locking her up in the broom closet and being terrorised during the night so that she wouldn't get any sleep.
Her anger got her through it. The anger and hatred towards her 'caretakers' for how they treated her. Towards her brother for abandoning her, towards her parents for choosing the easy way out and leave behind their son and daughter to fend for themselves and to her sister, who was the cause for all of this. She endured, trying her best not to show her aunt and uncle that they were winning, that she was terrified of confined spaces, even trying as much as to appease her uncle who was the less terrible of the two, but this only angered her aunt, who at one point even shaved off the girl's head. Luckily for Calliope, this was prior to the summer break, so she wouldn't have to face the bullying of her classmates. At the end of the summer break, Calliope made a run for it. She grabbed whatever little she had and ran from the home she had grown up in for more years than she had spent in her parental home, fleeing to the house of her best friend.
Her best friend was raised by a single teen mother, who understood the reality of an abusive home and the knowledge that should it be reported, Calliope would be put in child protective services. The woman had threatened her aunt and uncle to receive the child support payments or else she would report them, but they had laughed in her face, knowing that she wouldn't pull through on her threat. The woman didn't have enough funds to spend extra's on her daughter's friend, which Calliope didn't expect. she would focus on her school, be given clothes to wear from her friend so she wouldn't have old rags to wear, walk paper rounds until she was old enough to have actual sidejobs, earning more money for her savings account. She focused on her studies, wanting to do what her father did, forensic pathology and honour him in that way. She was fierce on the soccer field, even earning her a scholarship come graduation. It was both her will and her rage that got her where she was. Persevering against a traumatic childhood that left its traces here and there.
Moving to Kismet Harbor for college was exciting. It was a new start for the woman, far away from her abusers and a chance for a clean slate. She felt whole among her peers, thriving in her soccer team where she functioned as the keeper. With the inheritance she received upon reaching the adult age, she was able to pay off some of her student loans, managing the rest with part time jobs cleaning at people's homes. It wasn't enough to pay it all off, but at least enough to let her live a life where she didn't have to live dime after dime.
Graduating out of college, Calliope was excited by the prospect of getting a job at the coroner's office straight out of school, moving into an apartment with her college best friend. Her personal life was good, so was her work life, Calliope was the life at parties and her love life was picking up as well. She had her heart broken, which added to her trust issues that made it harder for her to let someone in. She hadn't expected to find it in Josiah Huddington however. A police officer she often worked with and was friends with. Somehow the man had sneaked his way into her life, sending her heart all aflutter at the sight of him.
It was when Calliope learned her sister had come into town in 2021 that she was frightened of the prospect of him learning about her past, which she had kept close to her chest, aside from Riley, her college best friend. So she had broken up with him, breaking both their hearts in the process. Calliope managed to keep a distance to her sister in the meanwhile, not having run into her and create awkward moments. she's not ready to face her sister and dig up the hatred she had pushed down upon leaving Detroit, afraid that that would be the end of her bright personality that she had slowly rediscovered upon her freedom rediscovered at eighteen. That's a process she doesn't want to lose.

Molly I am obsessed with these deep dives into lore you take, seriously this is My Shit™️
You mentioned, regarding Din being raised on Concordia, that he says in the S1 finale that his family name was only in the registers on Mandalore, which is how Gideon knew his name. This is the whole quote:
“I was a foundling. They raised me in the Fighting Corps. I was treated as one of their own. When I came of age, I was sworn to the Creed. The only record of my family name was in the registers of Mandalore. Moff Gideon was an ISB Officer during the purge. That's how I know it's him.”
Now I'm about to say something kinda wild, but before I do I want to put forward some known facts abt the show and about the characters in it. (Some of which I've taken from your other article about the timeline of Mandalorian history!)
One: The first episode of the first season of The Mandalorian is taking place in 9 ABY.
Two: Both Bo-Katan Kryze and Ahsoka Tano show up in this show. In 9 ABY, Ahsoka is 45, and we know Bo-Katan is older than her (though we don't know an exact birth year), putting her likely in her mid 50s to 60s. Yet... Bo-Katan looks about the same age she did in The Clone Wars, all things considered, on top of the fact that Katee Sackhoff is 43.
Three: The Mandalorian Civil War ended in about 39 BBY, 48 years before the beginning of the show.
Now, on to the wild thing: Maybe Din was rescued from Aq Vetina prior to the exile of Old Mandalorians (and, therefore, Death Watch) to Concordia at the end of the civil war. Maybe the reason he didn't go to Mandalore is because the group that rescued him just lived on Concordia, and he just got unlucky and stuck there. This would explain why his name was still in the registers on Mandalore, assuming there was still open communication between Mandalore and Concordia. Granted, this doesn't exactly explain why the Mandalorians rescuing Din had the Death Watch logo on their armor, since they wouldn't really exist until 22 BBY, though there's always a chance the logo and a group using it existed beforehand, and the group we know as Death Watch just co-opted it.
Here's the biggest issue with this version of events: this leaves the question "what the hell was going on on Aq Vetina" unanswered, if not in worse shape than we started, considering the CIS Droid Army didn't even exist until sometime between 24 and 22 BBY. That said, the Techno Union, parent of Baktoid Combat Automata, manufacturers of the battle droids, existed at least 300 years before the Battle of Coruscant (19 BBY). There's a chance that there were battle droids were out in the galaxy doing god knows what well before the Separatist Crisis.
I know that this series of events would put Din well into his 50s, likely around the same age as Bo-Katan, but if we're playing fast and loose with the concept of aging and/or messing with the timeline here, I don't see that as being completely out of the question.
Anyway, this is all just wild spitballing and tbh? I'm probably completely wrong because this is Star Wars, the plot hole and bad writing and conflicting sources and wack timeline universe (affectionate). (Thankfully I'm not as attached to this idea as I am my theory that the Armorer is Satine.) Thank you for coming to my tedtalk I guess slkdjfgsdf
This is the weekend of Din Djarin’s backstory! Here’s a piece I did on everything we know so far and every question they still have left to answer.

[U.C.A.U] - Heights and Mystery
Unnamed Creepypasta Alternate Universe, since I don't have a permanent name for all this yet.
I really fucking hate doing height charts, but I wanted to make this as a quick ref for my AU.
To give the gist of the story::
Jeffery moves into a new apartment complex to live on his own, and get away from that fake suburb, however, his whole life gets fucked in a matter of months...
That's as much as I can reveal without spoiling shit anyways.
To give a character run down (From left to right), we have::
Jeffery "Jeff" Woods - A young man who suffered serious burns as a kid and is permanently scarred. He currently tries his best to fit in with his neighbors and be nice to everyone. Even those who've hurt him.
William "Will" Grossman - A strange kid, who's moved from town to town ever since he was little. He loves horror media of any kind, Games, Movies, Comics, anything! However, with that interest, came the price of many kids being scared of him. He's never had a REAL friend.
Laughing Jack - Also known as "LJ" or just "Jack", He's Will's "Not so imaginary friend". He only appears to Will and WIll alone, and has spent his life pranking and tormenting the kid any chance he got.
Mollie Jones - Will's mom and only guardian, she's done her best to raise Will on her own. She refuses to talk about or even acknowledge
█████████ , Will's father, going as far as to remove his name from Will's birth certificate.
??? - "I don't know about much about him really, I think he's in some type of cult? He's always going on about 'The God with Black Tears' or something like that..."
??? - "We call him 'Zombie Man', he hates but it's all in good fun. It's weird tho...His stitches NEVER heal, they always look open and bloodied."

HELLO I've spent like 2 days thinking about this one OC to add into the universe of a kind of old fanclan of mine (tbh its probably only a few months old but these years have felt like forever so)
tw emotional abuse for the whole thing but it gets better
So the setting is in QuietClan, a well-established clan that has been existing for ages. they have like the vibes of a conservative neighborhood (semi xenophobic, misogynist, etc) but it's been getting better recently. the OC in question is born to a particularly traditionalist Molly (whose name I've yet to discover. they're white with brown tabby splotches. also her mate has passed away recently). Their name(the... protagonist of this ask if you will) is Sparrowkit and immediately their mom is like "oh. a boring pelt color. ah well you might be good at hunting" (they're mostly a brown tabby with white paws)
Anyways Sparrow is nb(they/it) and bio female(only reason im stating this is cause it's relevant to their upbringing) but they don't know it yet.
It grows up around two other litters. One being comprised of a tom named Berrykit(white with ginger spots), and the other one having three kits who are currently unnamed.
Sparrow's mother expects it to be a good warrior to make up for their lack of interesting traits. She also kind of does the thing where parents "ship" their children and kind of nudges Sparrowkit to be closer to Berrykit.
Sparrow is apprenticed to a senior warrior who is way more light-hearted than its mother. They feel guilty for enjoying their time outside of the camp where their mother isn't watching so they start spending more free time with her.
It grows close with a Molly of the litter of three from their time.
Near the end of Sparrowpaw's apprenticeship, they realize that they probably won't be able to pass their exam on the first try. This prediction comes true and Sparrow's mother yells at it for a while in front of the whole clan. The Molly that sparrow had made friends with decides to stay behind to become a warrior with sparrow
Sparrowpaw passes their apprenticeship the next assessment and becomes Sparrowheart.
Berry(insert suffix) basically immediately becomes their mate because hey, that's what their parents did right? get married right after college?(or the warrior's equivalent)
Sparrow's mother pressures them into having kits
It happens eventually but by the time that Sparrowheart gives birth, its the middle of a very hard leaf bare. Sparrow's mother dies and so does all but two of sparrow and berry's kits.
They see an omen at some point of a small sparrow stuck in a briar bush. Sparrow goes to help the bird and it flies away into the sun(not literally).(also sparrow's mother's prefix is probably gonna be briar so you might understand the omen ;) )
Sometime around the new leaf/greenleaf after, Sparrowheart talks with someone about mates and it goes something like this.
Other cat: "oh my god I love my Mate sm <3 they can like practically read my mind I love spending time with them etc etc"
Sparrow: "... you enjoy spending time with your mate ?"
Cat: "...you don't??"
Sparrow: "I mean yeah I guess hanging out with berry[suffix] is fine but I don't actively seek it out. the only cats I really like talking to is [previous mentor], [another warrior that they made friends with during their time in the nursery], and [Molly they were friends with since they were kits]"
cat: "oh huh I always thought you were in love with [best friend] I remember being so confused when you told me you were mates with Berry[suffix]"
Sparrow: "I can be in love with MOLLIES?!"
anyways sparrow and berry break up but leave off on good terms
their kits grow up and sparrow attempts to be a better parent than its mother was
It confesses to its best friend who becomes its mate :)
Their other friend becomes leader and appoints them as deputy
sometime during their cat 60s, they become Sparrowstar
and a new clan named WildClan, the leader being Pumpkin (another oc of mine), enters town
also at some point there's drama about sparrow's mother being let into StarClan so they create a new religion but im too tired to flesh it out rn
anyways what do you think :0
oo
I do think this is a cool idea
it's always hard to make those types of stories be fair and not like.. icky, cause most people give the terrible side too much power and make it feel unfair
but I do like how Sparrowstar comes into themself and accepts itself for who they are
and plus it isn't forced to stay in a situation where they aren't happy
I think this could be a very cool idea personally

Mighty Nein Next Gen AU, Part One
Hey, I wrote this AU a couple months back and I'm working on writing more of this AU but here are some notes I have about our Mighty Nein as parents and backstory for the AU
Masterlist for the whole AU (will continuously be updated):
MOLLY AND KINGSLEY ARE BOTH ALIVE IN THIS AU
So, Molly NEARLY dies due to Lorenzo but survives with death saves but, later on in the game, Cree or Vess DeRogna or a new member of the Tomb Takers (necromancer?) cast Clone.
Due to the nature of clone and the spell description, it says "if the original creature dies, its soul transfers to the clone" So Lucien comes back in that body.
Fight me, my AU bitch
Anyway, when they defeat Lucien later on a spirit gets stuck in that body and we get Kingsley Tealeaf
Anyway, more of the fun stuff and actually important part of the Alternate Universe/later timeline
Fjord and Jester have a giant, elaborate wedding at the Lavish Chateau after sailing for a few years
Jester always wanted a big wedding, due to the fact she is a giant romantic and was upset her mother never had a wedding originally (Marion is happy now just dating The Gentleman but she did tell Jester as a kid she hoped Jester would have one for her)
Cad walked Fjord down the isle because they are Wildmother Brothers
TJ was the ring bearer and Luc was the flower boy because he deserves it, he picked those flowers with Uncle Cad, dang it
Fjord and Jester give the ship to Kingsley and move in with Marion and The Gentleman
Fjord and Jester have four kids, three triplet girls and a baby boy eight years later
Now for the most important part: Artagan fucking with Fjord during the pregnancy
They find out because Artie is laying in bed with them and casually goes "congrats on the triplets, you two"
Cue Fjord going unconscious
Jester and Artie have a babyproofing session that is off the walls useless
They babyproof the knives by putting bubblewrap on the handles
They also flip the doors upside down (because, to quote Artagan, "the handles are higher up now so they can't reach") but since the doors have glass on the upper parts, Fjord has broken several doors by accidently kicking the glass
Fjord and Jester also name their kids off of the most important people to them (family/friends)
Artagan takes them (and later the rest of the Nein) on family vacations to the feywild
He also gives all of Jester's kids feywild titles and familiars (that start off as plushies but eventually come to life)
Artagan also has a nasty habit of kid- babysitting his nieces and nephew, taking them to Feywild Court Stuff, where they get pampered like royalty
I wanna have a whole post dedicated to the BS the triplets go through during birth but, to simplify, due to the bloodline one of them nearly dies at birth but was saved by Artagan and, as a return, they name the baby after him
All three of the triplets are warlocks for Artagan
Also, the baby boy is a cleric of The Wildmother, more on that later :)
Mollymauk, Caleb, and Essek are in a polycule (all wear promise rings but never wanted to get married)
They own several homes, one each in Nicodranus, Rexxentrum, and Rosohna
Caleb and Essek are both academics with research grants and college professors/government officials, they have the money to live luxuriously
This also gives Caleb and Molly the ability to work at Veth's summer camp during the summer
Essek is also AFAB, Demiboy in this AU (Matt has been using they/he lately so I'm guessing that's the case anyway)
This is my way of saying, Essek get's pregnant and is trying to hide it at Fjord and Jester's wedding
They have a baby girl (biologically Essek and Caleb's kid) exactly ONE DAY before Veth gives birth to her second kid (more about this later but safe to say she was livid)
The baby is just as magic driven as her parents, loving the study of it
But also loves tarot cards from Momma Molly
Molly a couple years later finds a little one abandoned in Rosohna and adopts them
It's a few weeks later, when having a fit, they find out she is an aasimar
Molly and Verin teach the aasimar kid (I cant think of a name, help) how to swordfight
That's the end of part one, part two is in the master post's link. Love y'all

@harrypotterjelly asked for some headcanons of Victoire/Dominique/Louis Weasley!
Victoire:
She’s the oldest of both her siblings and all the Weasley grandchildren
She is seven years older than Dominique and eight years older than Louis
James/Freddie/Roxanne are five years younger than her and the next oldest Weasley grandchildren
Other than her parents and Percy/Audrey’s wedding she has been a flower girl is all of her aunts and uncles weddings
She is very smart, stubborn, and has a rebellious streak, Bill thought that she was an obvious Gryffindor and was a bit upset when she was sorted into Ravenclaw
She plays the drums and together with Teddy they form a band at school
Teddy and Victoire are best friends, and see each other more as siblings than anything else
They constantly bicker and fight with one another, but they would kill for the other if it came to it
Victoire loves to visit her grandparents and aunt in France and goes abroad as often as she can
She does have trouble with the language at first, but makes a point of practicing with Fleur when she’s at home
She falls in love at fifteen, and he’s different than anyone else she had dated before
SJ sees her for her, not her beauty, not her family, just Victoire and nothing else
She does get pregnant when she’s sixteen, but has an abortion which she regrets
When she finds out she’s pregnant again a year later just after graduating, she runs away and gets married to SJ
They are both really immature and stupid about the whole situation
Victoire ends up giving birth alone and her parents bring her and SJ back to England
Once they are back on their feet, Victoire moves her family out and never looks back
She rarely visits the cottage and doesn’t really attend any family events
She does make a point to stay in contact with Dominique and Louis though and have them involved in her children’s life
She has four children, Regulus, Arcturus, Megan, and S3
Dominique:
She is seven years younger than Victoire and seven months older than Louis
She was planned, or at least as planned as possible
She is a rainbow baby, having been born four years after Fleur miscarried a little boy (Jacques “Jack” William Weasley)
Dominique is the wild child, she’s very careless and has a sort of evil genius energy to her, but she just uses it to get gossip out of people
She is the second youngest girl, with Lily being the youngest of the Weasley grandchildren by eight months to Dominique
They are both the smallest, Lily is an inch taller than Dominique, or would be if Dominique’s hair wasn’t so crazy (very long and curly)
Dominique is a definite tomboy, the “son” that Bill always wanted, especially when she was sorted into Gryffindor
She knows how to doll herself up, but she only does it for special occasions, she doesn’t want to be a girly-girl
She also isn’t the best with languages, all of this puts a strain between her and Fleur
She’s very close to her cousins Molly and Lucy as Percy and Audrey are her godparents despite Bill and Percy never getting along
She has one of the highest detention counts of her cousins, only second to James and Freddie (who somehow managed to get an equal amount)
She has been in love with Lorcan since she was fourteen, and finally makes a move on her sixteenth birthday (despite the two year age difference)
Or so she thought
She gets pregnant by Lysander, Lorcan’s twin brother and it ruins her year
Lots of stories and rumors go around about her and she causes the end of a very important relationship
She eventually leaves the school in shame and to have her son without prying eyes around
She gives her baby and finally gets together with Lorcan and realizes that everything will be okay
After graduating from Hogwarts, she goes to a Muggle University to study photography and advertising
She married Lorcan after graduating and they start their family
They have three daughters, Clarice and the twins Riley and Rhyane
Louis:
He is the youngest grandson with Lily as the absolute youngest six weeks after him
He was born three month premature and it really scared Bill and Fleur
He lived at St. Mungo’s for the first four months of his life, until he was big enough to go home
He was a very warm and cuddly baby, but started to pull away and become more fussy when he was a toddler
He was diagnosed as autistic when he was five, he has light/sound/touch sensitivities that Bill and Fleur never adapt to
He’s very artistic, even at a young age, he loves to draw and paint and is really good at it
He plays football/soccer with Hugo, in an attempt to get him more socialized, he plays goalie
He’s sorted into Ravenclaw at school, like Victoire and she’s really happy for him
He keeps up a very consistent correspondence with his Uncle Charlie who he is also named after
Louis is perfectly happy to just fly under the radar and be a fly on the wall
He joins the school newspaper as their cartoonist his first year and keeps it up all seven years
He becomes prefect his fifth year and Bill is really proud of him
Louis always knew that he wasn’t the son his parents (especially Bill) wanted, he doesn’t like quidditch or wrestling around or all the dumb things his cousins do
He picks up French the easiest from Fleur and he loves going to France!
He starts dating Anamika Nott their seventh year, and his parents get a bit nervous about it
They don’t know if he could handle a rejection if she broke up with him, not knowing that Anamika isn’t his first girlfriend
The way they act about his relationship is the reason why he never tells them that he eloped with Anamika
It’s about a month or so after they moved in together, Hugo and Dominique and two of Anamika’s little sisters are their witnesses
Anamika gets pregnant that following winter and they are so excited but hide it from their parents as long as they can
Louis is scared to be a father at nineteen, but Anamika wanted to have a baby and so did he
Navya changes something in Louis, and all of the things that bothered him before don’t when it’s for her
They have four more children, their only son Rohan who is four years younger than Navya, Prisha two years younger than Rohan, and the twins Chantel and Rochelle who are nine years younger than Prisha
The twins were a very big surprise, but well adored by their parents and older siblings

Rating: G   Status: Complete
10. Dora by notoriously
Meetings with the Order are long and boring, and Don't-Call-Me-Nymphadora Tonks doesn't do long and boring. She takes some time out of her duties to carefully consider Remus Lupin, and he quite-significantly-less-carefully considers the name that leaves his mouth when addressing her.

Crusading Cinema: Socially Conscious Female Directors By Kim Luperi
As TCM’s groundbreaking series has Women in Film illustrated, it wasn't only men who blazed the cinematic trail. The few female filmmakers in early Hollywood with the power to tell stories important to them used the medium to illuminate social issues. Here’s a look at three women who raised awareness – and sometimes hell – with their “social problem” films.
Lois Weber
Tumblr media
Even when on vacation, Lois Weber was “planning problem pictures by which she hopes to lend her mite [sic] towards the education and uplift of humanity,” The Billboard conveyed. She sure delivered. Weber’s 1915 feature HYPOCRITES, in which a nude woman represents “The Naked Truth” to expose modern society’s hypocrisy, incurred the censors’ wrath – and made Weber a household name. The film’s box-office success secured Weber and her bold moral voice creative control over future films, and she embarked on a series of “preachment” pictures addressing divisive subjects, like sexual harassment (1915’s SUNSHINE MOLLY), capital punishment (1916’s THE PEOPLE VS. JOHN DOE), poverty and working women (1916’s Shoes) and abortion and birth control (1916’s WHERE ARE MY CHILDREN? and 1917’s THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE). Her pictures performed so well that Weber commanded the highest annual salary of any director, male or female, in 1917.
Produced at the height of Margaret Sanger’s birth control crusade, WHERE ARE MY CHILDREN? proved contentious but successful; a Pennsylvania censor called it “unspeakably vile,” yet it ranked as Universal’s biggest moneymaker of 1916. A committee from the National Board of Review, unsure if they should allow it to screen, polled prominent community members, and a majority supported the exhibition for adults only. Though the director should be commended for encouraging discussion of such a controversial topic, Weber biographer Shelley Stamp points out that the movie makes a classist, eugenics argument, mirroring the movement at that time. Ultimately, WHERE ARE MY CHILDREN? supports birth control – for working class women only, upper class women should still reproduce – but ultimately denounces abortion.
Ida May Park
Many of Ida May Park’s pictures, including the 14 she helmed at Universal from 1917-1920 and many of the 50 features she scripted, center on women who rise from poverty or other desolate beginnings to cinch a fairytale ending. As Jackie Perez observed in When Women Wrote Hollywood, most of Park’s films are lost, but existing documentation informs us that while romance and love reigned supreme in her movies, Park also explored socially minded issues like forced marriage, neglectful spouses and harassment.
Park’s only directorial effort to survive, in fragment only, is BREAD (’18). Frequently compared to Weber’s Shoes, another societal-minded feature starring Mary MacLaren, BREAD follows a woman navigating the big city on her own and trying to make her dreams come true as she contends with issues of poverty, power imbalance and the manipulation she faces from men.
Dorothy Davenport Reid
Tumblr media
Following the tragic January 1923 death of husband Wallace Reid from complications related to morphine addiction (initially prescribed by studio doctors after an accident), actress Dorothy Davenport Reid established her own production company for the sole purpose of creating socially conscious pictures. After attending a conference on narcotics, Mrs. Wallace Reid began work – uncredited as director and writer – on HUMAN WRECKAGE (’23), a now-lost film that frankly depicted drug usage and addiction.
As Karen Ward Mahar wrote in Women Filmmakers in Early Hollywood, Mrs. Reid was a “showman.” With alarming scenes intended to shock audiences and Reid appearing onscreen entreating viewers to help in the fight against narcotics, HUMAN WRECKAGE emerged as one of the first exploitation pictures. The movie performed well, particularly because Reid made in-person appearances at theaters and curious fans flocked to see what she crafted in her husband’s memory. Reid followed it up with BROKEN LAWS (’24), which explored juvenile delinquency and parental authority, and THE RED KIMONO (’25), about a woman tricked into prostitution. While The New York Times dismissed the latter as “intended to cause weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth,” poor reviews were the least of Reid’s worries. Journalist Adela Rogers St. Johns based the source material for THE RED KIMONO on an actual trial she covered, but in dramatizing the case, she failed to change the real woman’s name. Thus, Gabrielle Darley successfully sued Reid for violating her privacy, forcing her to shutter her production company, though Reid continued producing for Poverty Row studios through the late 1930s.
The Supreme Court's landmark 1915 Mutual Film Corporation ruling denied movies protection under the First Amendment, prompting censorship legislation in several states and ultimately encouraging the industry to approach cinema as entertainment. However, the work of these three women, as well as others who explored divisive topics like Lule Warrenton (racial prejudice in 1916’s WHEN LITTLE LINDY SANG) and Ida Lupino (rape in 1950’s OUTRAGE), laid the groundwork for future female filmmakers to challenge and change minds through cinema.

~ Meet Waves ~
dominique provost-chalkley & they/them; genderqueer ‷ watch out , waverly “waves” bordeaux has crash-landed into roswell !! they look 27 years old and celebrate their birthday on may 8th. they are from weston, massachusetts, reside in lunar crescent and are currently working as the co-owner of teal pumpkin café. one thing you should know about them is they are proudly deaf and are currently on hiatus from their aspiring broadway career‷
Backstory TWs: Mentions of Chronic Illnesses & Medical Content
Waves was born two months prematurely and on Mother’s Day, 1994. Their mother refers to them as her “little miracle gift” because of this fact. Their original due date wasn’t until the end of July... In addition to being born prematurely, they were born with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss { profound in left ear, moderately-severe in right ear }, with bilateral clubfoot, and with a heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot { TOF }.
They received the first of a series of open-heart surgeries to repair their heart defect when they were only 1 month old. The next surgery took place at 2 months. They also had surgery at 11 ½ months, 18 months, 3 years, and 5 ½  years. When it came to their clubfoot, their parents tried the bracing method; but they eventually underwent two surgeries to correct the positioning of their feet/ankles when they were 3 and then again when they were 4 years old. Because of this, they now wear sparkly AFO braces for support. They also still have lingering issues with foot/ankle instability and chronic pain.
Growing up, their parents spoke French at home as their father { Sébastien } was born and raised in Orleans and their mother { Amélie } was born and raised in the French countryside. They also have three older siblings, all of which were born in France. Their parents struggled to learn ASL to teach their daughter as their English had never been extraordinary strong; but the pair did their best best, teaching young Waves ASL, French, and English simultaneously. Despite ultimately being left-handed, they actually learned to sign as if their right hand was their dominant hand.
They received their first pair of assistive hearing devices at the age of 18 months. Their hearing aids were purple BTE { behind the ear } hearing aids with pink full shell earmolds. Every time they’d get a new pair of hearing aids, they’d stick with a similar color scheme; though once they were old enough and were able to communicate their desires, the earmolds were always sparkly purple but remained full shell in style.
Starting at age 6, they began attending speech therapy 3-4 times a week. Their speech therapist insisted they attend 5 times a week as they were delayed even beginning speech therapy due to health reasons; but their parents thought 5 times a week would be too much. They continued with speech therapy through the age of 19; though they went down to twice a week and then once a week and only through school as they got older. They actually never attended a formal preschool and instead was homeschooled by a private tutor who was a former teacher of the Deaf. They started kindergarten a year late at the age of 6 due to health reasons and frequent hospitalizations as a young child.
They never attended a mainstream school. Their parents wanted to give them the best chance for success; so they were enrolled in kindergarten at an elite primary school for the Deaf located in Boston. From there, they went on to attend the primary’s sister school—an elite secondary school for the Deaf. On their first day of kindergarten, their anxiety was so bad that their parents almost pulled them out of class. There was one boy called Dillon who came up to them, introduced himself, and commented on how much he liked their purple hearing aids and their matching { at the time } purple AFO braces. He was the only reason they got through their first day of school; and he stayed their best friend/platonic soulmate all the way through graduation day.
Everyone from their parents to their teachers { and even some of their doctors } encouraged young Waves to get involved in their school’s theatre program, believing their bright personality would truly shine on the stage as it was known to shine off stage. At first, they were skeptical of the theatre due to not liking the attention and the fact memorizing lines was quite difficult { which turned into their difficulty being further examined and an eventual diagnosis of dyslexia }; but after their breakout role as Molly in a production of Annie when they were 8 years old, they instantly became hooked on anything and everything theatre.
At the age of 11, they ended up needing two emergency open heart surgeries back-to-back. This led to them missing half a year of school. They almost needed to repeat the year; but thanks to a hired private tutor, they were able to catch up with their current grade level during their long recovery period. During this rough time, binge-watching musicals was the only thing that got them through. It was also during this time they first took an interest in baking as they’d been plagued with numerous food allergies/sensitivities/intolerances since they were a baby. Musicals and baking became their outlet.
Waves continued to be part of their school’s theatre program; and at the age of 15, they were given the opportunity to join the junior program of a theatre company in Boston called Deaf Atlantic Theatre Company { aka DATC }. This company was the New England chapter of an inclusive theatre company located in off Broadway in NYC that was known for having performances in both spoken English and ASL. Their breakout role with this company was as a lost child in a production of Peter Pan.
When it came time for college, the initial plan was to go to a university in London; however, due to health reasons { that ultimately led to a diagnosis of Mast Cell Activation Syndrome—MCAS }, their plans for London fell through. Fortunately, they’d been accepted into the infamous Gallaudet University as well. They ended up attending Gallaudet where duel majored in both Theatre and Environmental Science { the latter due always having had a strong appreciation for Mother Earth }.
Their junior year of university, they had the opportunity to study abroad in Greece. They jumped at this opportunity due to the fact their favorite musical, Mamma Mia!, made them want to go to Greece. They weren’t going to miss their chance to skip awkwardly down cobblestone pathways while sign singing and wearing well-worn overalls. It was the closest thing they’d gotten to getting to play their dream role of Sophie { for now }.
After graduation, the plan was for them to leave the New England chapter of DATC and join the off Broadway chapter in NYC. This would’ve been a huge break for them, especially since that company’s actors were often given the auditions with Broadway productions as well as different TV shows/movies filming in the boroughs. Their plans were put on an indefinite hiatus after a series of events that led to a need for placemaker placement surgery and a diagnosis of a heart condition called Long QT Syndrome. This diagnosis was the most harrowing thus far; and it led to the beginning of what could’ve easily been a very dark period in Waves’s life. The only reason it never led to that dark period was because one of their older siblings invited them to move out to Roswell, New Mexico for a change of scenery and some much needed R&R.
They moved to Roswell at the age of 23 and initially only planned on staying maybe a year. However, they stayed well passed that year. In their time in Roswell thus far, they’ve moved out of their sibling’s house and into their own place on Lunar Crescent where they now reside with their roommate/ASL interpreter and their hearing/medical alert service dog { a German Shepard named Atlas }. They’ve also opened a small vegan bakery café called the Teal Pumpkin Café that specializes in being allergy-friendly and accessible to all.
Their name sign is the sign for “long hair” done one handed and with that hand forming the “W” hand shape. This name sign was given to them during the first Deaf event they attended when they were 4 years old. The name sign came from the fact their hair was down to their butt by that age. They’ve always been known by the fact they have hair for days.
They are named after Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley Novels; though due to all the trauma surrounding their birth, neither of their parents realized the second ‘e’ was missing from ‘Waverley’ until several months later. And by then, their parents had fallen in love with the spelling ‘Waverly’ and just didn’t bother changing it.
They came out as queer at the age of 15 and as genderqueer { using the pronouns she/they } at the age of 22. They changed their preferred pronouns to they/she several months later. They always knew they had a much stronger preference to they/them pronouns over she/her pronouns; but it took them until their 25th birthday to be able to admit that to anyone and formally change their preferred pronouns to solely they/them. Despite their preference for they/them pronouns and their gender identity being genderqueer, they don’t have issue with being referred to as feminine titles such as daughter, sister, girlfriend, actress, etc. Titles such as girl, woman, and female are hit or miss. And when it comes to honorifics, they are only comfortable with Mx. as miss and ms. don’t sit well with them.
They are not formally trained when it comes to baking. Everything they know, they learned from growing up with a hired French chef. Initially, this chef was hired due to all of their food allergies and restrictions; but over the years, they began to learn from the chef... This is why their baking style is heavily French-inspired. Their cooking style, on the other hand, is a bit of everything.
The majority of their wardrobe comes from thrift, vintage, and charity shops as they wish to not give into the fast fashion industry. Only about 15% isn’t bought secondhand; and that’s because they believe it is important to support Deaf and disabled owned businesses as well. They collect both pins and beanies, the majority of which were purchased secondhand. Their favorite beanie is a thrifted mustard yellow one that a good friend of theirs embroidered “Waves” into the folded over bit. They also collect cool patterned socks; though hardly any of their socks are secondhand as socks are usually worn out before they can be given to thrift/vintage/charity shops.
They are an avid gardener due to the severity of several of their food allergies and a need to know exactly where their food comes from. Because of this, they have a decently sized greenhouse in their backyard as well as a hydroponic plant tower in their sunroom. They’ve taken to growing quite the assortment of produce; and as they hate to see any produce go to waste, they are known to donate any excess to local soup kitchens and homeless shelters. They are also known to dropping off baskets of fresh produce to their friends and neighbors.
They have a pretty big following on social media { mainly Instagram—their handle is thesbianwaves }; and they’ve taken to using their platform as a way of sharing their views on things like disability awareness/advocacy, deafness and ASL, queer pride, veganism, low-waste living, food allergies, and theatre/acting. They’re also rather well known throughout the Deaf community and the off Broadway acting community.
They’ve never learned how to ride a bike; and despite having others offer to teach them, they’re not entirely interested. They also don’t know how to swim. They do have some desire to learn to swim; but they’re kinda embarrassed to ask for lessons now that they’re a grown adult.

Chapter 6 – So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish [TST 1/2]
The chapter title comes from the wonderful Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy book series – drop this meta and read them immediately.
No, no he [Moriarty] would never be that disappointing. He’s planned something, something long-term. Something that would take effect if he never made it off that rooftop alive. Posthumous revenge – no, better than that. Posthumous game.
This is what Sherlock says about Moriarty in the very first scene of TST, and on rewatch the application to Mofftiss is startling. Trust the writers – a short-term disappointment for a long-term excitement, if you will. The reference to the rooftop is a way of pointing out just how far back this has been planned – in other words, the seeming randomness of the series is not in fact random. But let’s see how that plays out in TST.
This episode opens, as so many have pointed out, with doctored footage, as though deliberately showing us how stories can be rewritten. However, we only get glimpses of the footage at the start of the episode – the extensive old footage is not security camera footage, but recap footage from s3, and specifically the end of HLV. The idea that there is something classified, hidden, that we don’t have the full story, is meant to be associated with the actual show Sherlock, not just the camera footage – it would have been very easy to give us most of the same footage in security camera style, but they deliberately reused shots from the show to make us doubt their own authenticity. So far, so good.
The first thing that I (and most of my friends) noticed about this scene, however, is that it’s not good. The writing is questionable, to say the least. The serious resolution to the problem of Magnussen’s murder is interrupted by Sherlock tweeting, brotherly bickering, hyperactive and possibly high Sherlock being played for comedy (complete with mock opera). And then, perhaps the worst lines of the show so far:
SHERLOCK: I always know when the game is on. Do you know why?
SMALLWOOD: Why?
SHERLOCK: Because I love it.
Like a lot of this show, think about those lines for more than a nanosecond and they really don’t make sense. You’ve got to think about them for a lot longer before they start to again. This, I think, is where BBC Sherlock’s self-parody really starts. TAB focuses on parodying, critiquing and rewriting historical adaptations, but it’s easy to see the merging of all of the undeniably Sherlock elements into one parodically awful scene. The quick quips that are supposed to be clever and that are so common in Moffat’s dialogue are seen in that moment of dialogue – but the quip isn’t clever anymore, it’s empty. The same catchphrase of ‘the game is on’ comes back, and the quintessential use of technology is referenced in Sherlock’s Twitter account, where again his #OhWhatABeautifulMorning is unfathomably glib. Our Sherlock is also better known than previous adaptations for his drug abuse, and this also gets referenced, but here it gets played for comedy, which is incongruous with the rest of the show – in fact, THoB, HLV and TAB all take it pretty seriously, so to see it played off as a joke is tonally questionable. In other words, here we have Sherlock caricatured as a programme, in one scene – and it’s horrible.
(We should also notice that the use of Twitter is important – it underlies a lot of the glib comedy in this episode, with Sherlock later Tweeting #221BringIt (which is so unbelievably queer?). In Sherlock, Moffat use Twitter rather than Tumblr to comment on fan reaction to Sherlock, probably because their older audience will have no idea what Tumblr is, but also because Twitter is much more mainstream in its appreciation. Twitter takes centre stage in TEH, with #SherlockLives and the scene with the support group. The joke there is about the sheer level of how-did-he-do-it mania that gripped the public – so when we see Twitter again, we should be thinking about an extratextual as well as a textual response to Sherlock, and how Sherlock’s behaviour on Twitter in this episode might caricature the way that he is seen from the outside.)
I don’t truly buy that (in this scene, at least) Mofftiss are critiquing their own show in a straightforward sense, because they have dealt with technology better than this (words on screen, technology as useful within mysteries), drugs better than this (John’s, Mycroft’s and Molly’s reactions to Sherlock’s behaviour as well as Sherlock’s own difficulties) and clever quips far better (pick any episode). But in deconstructing this show to its instantly recognisable elements, and making them worse to hyperbolise the point, that scene strips the show of its heart. Interestingly, it’s also stripped of John, who will be the metaphorical heart of Sherlock through the EMP, but is also the part of the show that is missing when it is caricatured as the Benedict-Cumberbatch-being-clever show. This is also a critique of most people’s perception of Sherlock Holmes as a character through history in the sense of the reductive cleverness – Mofftiss are showing us that this is completely empty.
What does this mean for Sherlock himself, bearing in mind that this is taking place in his Mind Palace? The answer is pretty grim – remember that Sherlock is metatextually grappling with his own identity at this point; he needs to discover the man he is, rather than is portrayed as, in order to get out of this alive. In a psychological sense, then, the opening of TST sees Sherlock deconstruct himself as seen from the outside, and as his psyche has traditionally perceived himself, and realise that that version of himself is hollow. This scene, then, is a rejection of the Sherlock of the public eye, as well as Sherlock’s own eyes.
There is a non-explanation for how the Secret Service doctored the footage of Sherlock shooting Magnussen, the response simply being that they have the tech. If the answer is going to be that vague, there is little reason to bring up the question – except to raise it in the viewers’ minds. Making the audience question their belief in the s4 universe is something that happens very frequently, and this is the start of it. A later chapter goes into the parallels that Sherlock and Doctor Who have, but there’s an important bit from Last Christmas (DW Christmas Special 2014) that is relevant here – the main characters, all dreaming, whenever they are asked any questions that can’t be explained in the dream universe, simply reply ‘it’s a long story’. This is a ‘long story’ moment – where no explanation is given, so questions about reality are raised and unanswered.
Another similar moment comes when Sherlock says he knows exactly what Moriarty is going to do next – how? And, more to the point, it becomes hugely obvious that he doesn’t. Yet, for the first time in history, he feels happy to sit back and wait on Moriarty, because he knows that what will come will come. This insistence that the future will take its course as it needs to might draw our minds ahead to the frankly ridiculous reliance on predictions that we see in TLD – however, it should also draw our minds across to Doctor Who, and to Amy’s Choice, a series five episode I’m going to delve deeper into later, but where because it’s a dream, the Doctor is able to predict every word the monsters say.
Notice that ‘glad to be alive’ is followed by Vivian saying her name – we’ll come back to this later.
Cue opening credits!
Before going anywhere else with TST, required reading is this meta by LSiT (X). I can’t make these points better than she has, nor can I take credit for them. I’m particularly invested in her description of the aquarium and the Samarra story, as well as the client cases that appear and aren’t updated on John’s blog. Our reading will diverge later on – I think this series is a lot more metaphorical than it is hypothesis-testing, although the latter is a notable feature of ACD canon (see the original THotB) that definitely does happen here as well. I’m going to leave the Samarra story, the aquarium and the cases for LSiT to explain, however, and move on.
When we move into 221B, the fuckiness is instantly apparent from the mirror. You can go here (X) to navigate the whole inside of 221B, and I suggest you do; it’s a fantastic resource. The mirror showing the green wall is simply wrong – the angle that this is shot from suggests that we should see the black and white wallpaper, complete with skull etc. Instead, we see the green wall – and the door. We can tell this is wrong because in the ‘wrong thumb’ case about thirty seconds later, the right wallpaper is reflected in the mirror. Another note of fuckiness that we should spot is that Sherlock seems to be taking his cases from letters, in the mail he has knifed into the mantelpiece – this show has been really keen on emphasising that he uses email for the last three series, so the implication that people are sending him letters is even odder than it would be in a modern show anyway.
(Everybody in the world has commented on the ‘it’s never twins’ line – but to reiterate its importance. Firstly, it’s almost identical to the line in TAB, just with ‘it’s’ instead of ‘it is’. TAB repeats lots of things though, because it’s a dream – well yes, but dreams can’t tell the future. So material from TAB being recycled doesn’t point to TAB being a dream, it points to TST being a continuation of the dream in TAB. The fact that they saw fit to reiterate this line in a series about secret siblings also puts paid to the theory that s4 was plotted in a rush and not in line with previous series – there is a theme here, and they’re pushing it.)
And so we move to Sherlock relentlessly texting through the birth, through the christening – horrible, ooc behaviour for him if we think back to how emotional he was at the wedding. Importantly, this behaviour is all tied up with his obsessive Tweeting, which in turn links in to how the outside world (i.e. us) perceive Sherlock – is this the Sherlock that people want to see on screen? Doesn’t he feel wrong? Sure, there’s an element of self-critique in there from Mofftiss, but the incorporation of the phone obsession leaves the blame squarely with the audience. In case we couldn’t already feel that Sherlock’s character is way off, we have his Siri loudly say that she can’t understand him.
We remember from TAB that Sherlock sees himself as cleverer through John’s eyes, and the reasonably sympathetic portrayal we get in TAB we can probably put down to this attempt at understanding himself from the outside. The water in TST is showing us that we’re going in, and the sad thing is that this is almost definitely how Sherlock has come to perceive himself, but just like Siri he doesn’t truly recognise it. It’s also worth noting here the emphasis placed on God in godfather and later the deliberate mentions of Christianity at the Christening – there is also a tuning out of a culture he can’t really align himself with here, which is more important when we think about the fact that this character has been around since the 19th century.
Water tells us we’re sinking deep into Sherlock’s mind, as discussed in a previous chapter. Water imagery is going to be hugely prevalent in TST, but I want to talk quickly about the subtle hints at water even when we’re not in a giant fuck-off aquarium. Take a look at the rattle scene (which always sparks joy). When we get a side angle that shows both Sherlock and Rosie, there’s a black chest of some description behind Rosie – the top is glowing slightly blue, for reasons I can’t fathom. Then we’re going to cut to a shot of Rosie – despite seeing only a second before that there is nothing on her head, there is a glow of blue on it that looks almost like a skullcap. Cut back to Sherlock getting a rattle in the face, and the mirror is glowing the same blue colour behind him. This is all fucky, and it’s a fuckiness which is aesthetically tied to the waters of Sherlock’s mind perfectly. It suggests that Rosie isn’t real, but more important is the mirror. Earlier on I pointed out how the mirror was showing the wrong reflection; here, the mirror is glowing blue, linking it thematically to Sherlock’s subconsciousness. Visually, we’re being hinted at the process of self-reflection that’s going on in Sherlock’s brain – and the opening of TST is showing him getting it terribly wrong. Note that when the mirror jolted right earlier, Sherlock was proclaiming that it had been the wrong thumb – god knows what thumbs have to do with this, but there’s a question of shifting perception on his person, like he’s trying to locate himself.
The glowing blue light sticks around, and seems particularly associated with Rosie, like she’s the focus of much of Sherlock’s thought at the moment. LSiT’s meta linked above has already picked up on the many dangers in Rosie’s cradle decoration, from the Moriarty linked images to the killer whale mobile. Due purely to a lucky pause, I caught the killer whale’s eyes glowing blue, just like the blue from the rattle scene. He’s thinking about her in terms of the key villains of the show as well as the villains in his mind.
I’m not going to comment on the bus scene because I have a chapter dedicated to Eurus moments before TFP – jumping straight ahead.
We then find our first Thatcher case – others have been pretty quick to point out the significance of the blue power ranger in gay tv history (X), and infer that Charlie is queer coded – much like David Yost, who played the blue power ranger, he is not able to come out without being treated badly. This is undoubtedly important, as is the fact that this is the second time in 12 minutes of this show that they’ve shown us how easily film footage can be faked, and someone can be lied to – you don’t need to have Mycroft Holmes levels of clearance, just a Zoom background. This is important too. But the other thing I want to focus on is that he says he’s in Tibet.
Sherlock comes pretty high on my list of top TV shows, but currently Twin Peaks holds the top spot – it’s an unashamedly cryptic show all about solving mysteries through dreams, so no wonder I like it. It’s made by David Lynch, and in the TAB chapter I talk about how TAB takes a lot of structural inspiration from his most famous film, Mulholland Drive, which has similar themes. I don’t think this is anything particularly interesting beyond an attempt to reference the defining work in the field of it-was-all-a-dream film and tv – David Lynch and Mofftiss and Victor Fleming are the only people I can think of who can actually make that plot look good. But this Tibet moment, particularly as we’re going to be hit by another reference to Tibet later, underlining its importance, I think is a reference to this scene (X) where the protagonist, Cooper, outlines a dream in which the Dalai Lama spoke to him and gave him the power to use magic to solve mysteries. Fans of Twin Peaks will know that the magic doesn’t last long – it’s pretty much an introductory way in, and most of the rest of his important deductions will all be made in dreams. This is one of the most famous scenes in the whole programme, because it introduced the world to the weirdness of what had been set up as a straightforward cop show, and despite Cooper rarely (possibly never?) mentioning Tibet again, it’s still highly quoted and recognisable. As a watershed moment in bringing dream worlds into normal detective dramas (something highly frowned upon according to any theory of storytelling!) this is a gamechanging moment, and I don’t think it’s a stretch to point to Sherlock’s several references to Tibet as a link back to this moment.
We then cut back to Sherlock thinking whilst Lestrade tells him more about the case – what is bizarre here, is that John and Lestrade are clearly visible through what can only be described as a rearview mirror attached to the side of Sherlock’s head. If anyone can tell me what that is, I would love to know. I’m going to assume it’s a fucky mirror, because it’s in keeping with the other fucky mirrors so far. The visibility of John and Lestrade in the mirror is even more odd because it doesn’t match the colour palette of 221B at all. Sherlock is lit largely in warm, brown colours, as is Charlie’s father in the previous scene we’re transitioning from – Lestrade and John are lit in dark blue, to the point where they’re barely visible. This looks like a rearview mirror, but not like the one on the power ranger car – it’s a much older car, out of a different time, like so much in this dream world. The only colour palette they seem to match is the one from the s4 promotion photos – you know, when Baker Street is completely underwater.
Tumblr media
Drowning in the Mind Palace. Here we are, back where we started. Sherlock might be thinking about the case of Charlie, but he’s actually reflecting on that world we saw in the promo photos, where he’s struggling to stay alive in his brain. Notice that this isn’t just a split shot, it’s specifically a mirror, so we’re meant to focus on this episode as an act of reflection. There are great parallels between Sherlock and the Charlie case which you can find here (X) – essentially, Charlie and Carl Powers from TGG are mirrors for one another both in their names and in the manner they die (a fit in a tight place, basically). Carl Powers is already a mirror for Sherlock – obsessively targeted by Jim for being the best at what he does. Charlie mirrors Sherlock through their shared trip to Tibet (dreamscape alert) and, we think, through the metatextual link of the blue power ranger. In case you hadn’t spotted it, Powers links back to that too – probably coincidence, but a nice one nevertheless. Carl Powers’s death is by drowning, which we shouldn’t ignore in an episode as loaded with ideas about drowning in the mind palace. The fact that the mirror reflects drowning Baker Street aesthetics should make us think that Charlie is asking us to reflect on Carl Powers’s death, but also on Sherlock’s own – already fatally injured (by a fit or by Mary), he is going to die smothered, unable to cry for help (in a swimming pool/carseat costume (?!)/mind palace). The idea that none of these people could cry for help is particularly poignant because so much of series 4 is about Sherlock being unable to voice his own identity, and as we’ll see once he’s able to do that, that may give him the impetus to escape his death. Think of ‘John Watson is definitely in danger’ back in HLV.
Now. Why is Sherlock so keen for Lestrade to take the credit? It’s another reason to bring up the fact that John’s blog is constantly updating – it’s dropped in a lot in this series as opposed to others – and to make us think about why nothing is happening in real life. But, given that this episode is about Sherlock trying to find who he is, is it a rejection of the persona that goes along with being Sherlock Holmes? Possibly, but he’s going to have to go to a lot more effort than that. John’s blog is the real problem here, making not just Sherlock but Lestrade out to be like they’re not. John’s blog is a stand in for the original stories, which were supposed to be written by John Watson, but TAB has already (drawing on TPLoSH) laid the groundwork for the idea that John’s blog/those stories really do not tell the whole story. So this is coming back with a vengeance here, even though for the first time Sherlock is properly moving against the persona in there, not just bitching about John’s writing style, which is a theme more common to Sherlock Holmes across the ages. John then says that it’s obvious, and when pressed just laughs and says that it’s normally what Sherlock says at this point – so again, when Sherlock stops filling the intense caricature of arrogance and bravado, John the storyteller steps in to put him back in line, even though that means pulling him back to being a much more unpleasant character.
Tumblr media
A note here: most of the time in EMP theory, I think John represents Sherlock’s heart, and I try to refer to John as heart!John as much as possible when that’s the case. There are a few cases which are different, but most notable are when the blog comes up – then John becomes John the blogger, and our symbolism shifts over to the repressive features of the original stories and how that’s playing out in the modern world. Although a pain to analyse sometimes, I find it incredibly neat that the two of them are bound up in John as source of both love and pain, which fits our story beautifully.
John as blogger continues in the baby joke that he and Lestrade have going down the stairs – they continue with their caricature of Sherlock, but he doesn’t recognise himself in it. Or rather, there’s a moment when he seems to, but he can’t quite grasp onto it. This is typical of the way he recognises himself in the programme. It’s also worth noting that the image of John as a father is particularly tied into ACD, as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, so tying together blogger and father in this scene cements our theme.
Going into the Welsborough house, we get a slip of the tongue from Sherlock which is fantastic. He tells them that he is really sorry about their daughter, which at an earlier point in the show might just be a classic Sherlock slip-up. But mixing up genders is actually something which happens quite a lot in this show, and it’s something drawn attention to as significant in TAB.
Tumblr media
Sherlock asks John “How did he survive?” of Emelia Ricoletti, when of course he’s thinking about Moriarty, and John corrects him quickly, much like here. A coincidental callback? Maybe not. What’s the first mistake that Sherlock ever makes? Thinking that Harry Watson is a man. What’s the big trick they pull at the end of S4? Sherlock has a secret sister – and Eurus points out that her gender is the surprise at the end of TLD. Eurus is also an opposite-sex mirror for John and for Sherlock at various points and this allows Sherlock to approach their relations from a heterosexual standpoint and thus interrogate them – more on that later. So gender-swapping is a theme that runs through the show a lot. But the similarity to TAB in particular is important here, because in TAB that was our first obvious declaration that this wasn’t just a mirror to be analysed by the tumblr crowd, this was a mirror on the superficial level that had to be broken through. This callback to TAB is a callback to the mirrored dreamscape. Don’t believe me? Look at what happens next. The second Sherlock sees Thatcher the whole room not only goes underwater, but actually starts to shake – another throwback to recognising that Emelia was Moriarty, when the whole room shakes and the elephant in the room smashes. So, again, we’re being told that this isn’t about this case – it’s about something else, and that something is the elephant in the room. Just like the shaking smashes the elephant in the room, the shaking is what tells us about the smashed bust of Margaret Thatcher. Margaret Thatcher, whose laws on “promoting homosexuality” were infamous. Smashing the elephant in the room and Thatcher simultaneously between 2015, the 1980s and 1895 is hitting the history of British homophobia for the last hundred years summed up as quickly as possible, and tearing it down through Sherlock’s self-exploration. This is a good fucking show.
You’ll also notice that Sherlock is alone in the room, just for a second, when he has his Thatcher revelation – everybody else vanishes. Again, we’re seeing that the rest of the case is an illusion, providing just enough storytime to keep the audience believing in the dream, and possibly Sherlock too.
[There’s a fantastic framing of Sherlock here between two portraits, a man and a woman, seemingly ancestral – I would love to know more about these, because if I know Arwel they’re significant, and the way they hang over Sherlock is really metaphorically suggestive. If anyone has any info on that, it looks like a really good avenue to explore.]
Blue. Blue is the colour of Sherlock’s mind palace, but this scene ties it firmly to the Conservative party. The dark blue of Sherlock’s scarf nearly matches Welsborough’s jumper, which is in fact a better match for the mind palace aesthetic generally. Thatcher unsurprisingly wears blue as well. If blue is the water that Sherlock is drowning in, how interesting that it’s being tied to the most homophobic prime minister of the last 50 years. There was absolutely no need to make this guy a cabinet minister, dress him in blue, even make Thatcher replace Napoleon – I would actually argue that Churchill is a figure who matches Napoleon’s distance and stature much better for our time. Thatcher is an odd choice, and therefore significant. To tie this to the mind palace further, we then get a shot of Sherlock reflected in the picture of Thatcher as he analyses it – a reflection of him reflecting. In case we forgot what this was actually about.
Sherlock not knowing who Thatcher is – perfectly feasible and actually quite important, although something that I’m not going to resolve until my meta on TFP, because that’s where it comes together for me. But Sherlock playing for time with his further jokes about being oblivious (‘female?’) – that, again, is Sherlock actively playing a caricature of himself. He’s not doing it for fun – he’s doing it to cover up his concern about the smashed elephant in the room Thatcher bust.
The weird thing about the reveal of how Charlie died is that we see what should have happened, if everything had gone right, before we see how he died. I can’t recall this happening in another episode of Sherlock, although I could be wrong. It’s marked by the really noticeable scene transition of crackling television static, as though the signal is cutting out. This is possibly a bit of a reach, but there’s one obvious place where we’ve seen a lot of static before.
Tumblr media
Moriarty coming back isn’t what’s supposed to happen. It doesn’t happen in the books. We’re telling the wrong story here. (Bear in mind, from previous chapters, that Jim represents Sherlock’s fear that John’s life is in danger.) Just like Jim returning isn’t the right story, but it’s the one that happened, Charlie’s story isn’t the right story but it’s the one that happened – and indeed, Sherlock needing to save John from a dangerous marriage + suicide is not what is supposed to happen – John and Mary are supposed to be married for good (until she dies) in canon. A whole load of false endings – new stories superseding old ones. Mofftiss has an idea that there’s a new story that’s going to be told, and our strongest canon divergence is the end of s3, when we get into the EMP – and from thereon in to TAB it’s off the deep end, and the same is seen here. That TV static is talking about a new medium for a new age and their refusal to deal with established canon norms. Just in case we didn’t remember, outside in the porch we even get a visual reminder of the TV static with a second’s flashback to ‘Miss Me?’ Bad news is, that means Sherlock Holmes rejecting the norms he’s been given (feasibly represented by the hyperbolic nuclear family here) and instead… dying in his mind palace. Less fun. Carl Powers died too. Sherlock still hasn’t got there quite yet – let’s hope he doesn’t.
The next scene is, I think, very important. We come across Mycroft in a dark room with a tiny bit of light – this is really odd, as the obvious place to put Mycroft would be the Diogenes Club. Yet, although clearly more modern, this reminds me most of all of the room we meet Mycroft in in TAB.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The colour palette is the same as the top photo, and the similar chunks of light falling through suggest that we’re in the same place. I’ve brought in a photo from the aeroplane in TAB to show how the light is designed to mirror that of the Diogenes Club in TAB as well – there is a unity in all these Mycroft’s that we shouldn’t miss. Here I can’t imagine I’m the first one to notice that the light in Mycroft’s office is designed to look like a chessboard, which was an important motif in the promotional pictures for s4. Chess is associated with Sherlock’s brain through Mycroft, most notably in THE where it is contrasted with Operation which represents their emotional (in)capacities. So here we are – Mycroft is the brain, if we didn’t already know, and Sherlock has gone to speak to his brain alone much like he did in TAB. Mycroft has already been associated with the queen a lot; they meet in Buckingham Palace in ASiB, where there is a jibe about Mycroft being the queen of England – we can see here in Sherlock’s head that the brain’s power is vastly reduced by comparing these two episodes. The first time we see Mycroft in connection to the Queen we go to the most famous building in the UK. The second time, Sherlock says he’s going to the Mall, which is the street that Buckingham Palace is on, so we are led to expect a reprisal – and instead come here. There is still a picture of the queen on the wall, but apart from that we are in the darkest room of the show so far, whose grating makes it look under siege. Mycroft’s power in Sherlock’s head is vastly reduced, and indeed the brain’s influence (represented by the queen) over Sherlock’s character is waning as Sherlock struggles to come to terms with his emotional identity.
Tumblr media
[Crack/tenuous theory: when Sherlock asks John if he is the king of England in s3, in the drunk knee grope scene, this shows that his brain’s control over his emotions have slipped; references to the queen in relation to Mycroft before have shown that Sherlock does know about the royal family, so this has to metaphorically refer to his own psyche and letting go of his brain’s anti-emotion side. Like I say, crack. But I believe it.]
Again, if we weren’t sure about Mycroft representing the brain without the heart, his rejection of the baby photos is sending out a clear message of juxtaposition with John, who represents the heart. We also shouldn’t fail to notice the water coming over Sherlock’s face again as he struggles to recognise what is important about this. This comes as he is trying to recognise what is important about the Thatchers case. I’m going to try to lay it out as best I can here.
We’ve been through what Thatcher represents to queer people of Sherlock’s age, so there’s already a strong metaphor for homophobia being smashed there. However, let’s look at the AGRA memory stick being uncovered. We know (X) that Sherlock deduced his feelings for John as he was marrying Mary, and so having the smashing of the Thatcher bust at the AGRA memory stick reveal is pretty devastating metaphorically. Why does Sherlock constantly think Moriarty is involved? Well, HLV tells us that the Jim in Sherlock’s mind is his darkest fear – and he’s originally tied up in Sherlock’s mind when he’s first shot, but he pretty quickly gets loose. That darkest fear is exactly what Jim says in that episode: ‘John Watson is definitely in danger’. The reason we bring Jim in to represent this is part of deconstructing the myth of Sherlock Holmes. The whole concept of an arch enemy is made fun of in the show, and rightly so; Moriarty himself tells the Sir Boastalot story which lines Sherlock up with that ridiculous heroic tradition that he’s set himself into, which isn’t what Sherlock Holmes is really about at all. Holmes has never really been particularly invested in individual criminals (although there are exceptions –  Irene Adler, for example) – the time he gets most het up is The Three Garridebs, as we all know, when he thinks Watson is dying. It’s his greatest fear, and it’s also what Jim threatens, so Jim has become a proxy for that – and to understand that Sherlock Holmes is not the great Sherlock Holmes of the last hundred years, we have to get under and beyond Jim. Hence what we’re about to see. It’s not Jim, it’s Mary – and this is in very real terms, because Mary’s assassination attempt on Sherlock has left John in danger – but Sherlock won’t put the pieces together until the end of this episode, as we will see.
We should also pause over Mycroft asking Sherlock whether he’s having a premonition – Mycroft is laughing at the concept of Sherlock being able to envisage the future here, which we should remember when it comes to the frankly ludicrous plot of the next episode. Much like the much commented upon “it’s not like it is in the movies” which is there to undermine TST, this line is here to undermine TLD and point out the fact that it can’t possibly be real.
Sherlock describes predestination as like a spider’s web and like mathematics – both of these are to do with Moriarty. In the original stories, Moriarty is a mathematician, and one of the most famous lines from both the stories and the show describes Moriarty as a spider. This predestined future is one that Sherlock doesn’t like – Mycroft points out that predestination ends in death, which is what Sherlock is trying to avoid in this episode, and although Moriarty is never mentioned explicitly, his inflection here suggests that Sherlock is thinking about John subconsciously, without even understanding it. The Samarra discussion brings us back to the question of Sherlock’s death, and links it in with the deep waters of the mind he’s currently drowning in – the pirate imagery becomes really important here, because a pirate is someone who stays alive on the high seas and fights against them. The merchant of Samarra becoming a pirate is not merely a joke about a little boy, it’s a point about fighting for survival – and how will Sherlock later fight for survival? We’ll see him battle Eurus (his trauma, more on that later) head on, literally describing himself as a pirate. Fantastic stuff.
The scene transition where all of the glass breaks and then we cut to a background of what looks like blue water is a motif that runs through this entire episode – we’re smashing down walls in Sherlock’s mind, most particularly the Thatcher wall of 1980s homophobia, and indeed the first picture we see is that of the smashed bust.
Moving on – before we go back to Baker Street, there’s a shot of the outside – that features a mirror, reflecting back on 221B in a distorted, twisted way. Another mirror that is wrong – we’re reflecting in an alternate reality. These images keep popping up. It’s echoed in Sherlock’s deduction a few seconds later – by the side of his chair is what looks like either a car mirror or a magnifying glass, possibly the one from the Charlie scene, distorting his arm. It’s placed to look like a magnifying glass, whether it is or not, which ties in with the classic image of Holmes – but that image is distorted, remember.
Others have pointed out that when Sherlock falsely deduces that the client’s wife is a spy working for Moriarty, he should really be talking to John – and, in fact, this is another proof that this isn’t really, because otherwise this is pretty touchy stuff to be making light of in front of John. Instead, let’s remember this is Sherlock’s Mind Palace – John isn’t John here. What Sherlock does a lot in s4 – and nowhere more than the finale of TST – is displace a lot of his real world problems onto other people because he cannot handle the emotional impact of them, and that’s what he’s doing here. He’s trying to come to terms with the danger that Mary poses, but he can’t do it with John – hence why this scene has a John substitute, because that’s what the client is.
Tumblr media
Note that the red balloon is over the Union Jack cushion, reminding us that this scene is about John in danger (see this post X). However, what’s important here is that Sherlock has got it wrong. He’s currently trying to work out why what has just happened with Mary poses so much danger, and he’s imagining Mary as the worst threat he possibly could – in a word, this Mary is a supervillain. But Mary is not a supervillain; he’s got this all wrong, and even as he says it, it’s completely ridiculous. This is not the danger Mary poses – and so out the door the client goes, and we’re back to square one, trying to work out exactly why John is in so much danger.
I’m not going to pause over the next moment of importance for too long because many have covered it – let’s just notice that Sherlock’s face is overlaid with a smashed Thatcher bust, and remind ourselves that these are the walls of homophobia in Sherlock’s brain. Also note that this matches the half-face overlay of the water in the previous scene, linking the two (although the scene with Ajay later will cement that anyway).
Next up: Craig and his dog. Nothing can be said about dogs that hasn’t be said in these wonderful metas by @sagestreet (X). Nevertheless, let’s note that this dog is coloured the same as Redbeard, and Mary (a Sherlock mirror in this episode, and in this scene – their clothing matches, and their joining of skillsets to exclude John is the link that has always united them as mirrors) compares John to the dog. We know from the metas linked above that dogs are linked to queerness in the show, but let’s remember that John here is not John – John represents Sherlock’s own heart. It’s going to take longer than this for Sherlock to acknowledge John’s queerness. I don’t think Toby the dog is that important – instead, this is foreshadowing for the more significant dog to come in TFP. The dog also allows for another bit of self-parody in the show – the close-up on the dog running through chemical symbols and the map link directly back to the chase scene in ASiP, but this time everything is different. We have no clue really what Toby is chasing or what the crime that has been committed is – they’re not even running, they’re walking! All we have are cool, if ridiculous, graphics – and, brought down to style without substance, it’s nothing but comic parody. This is important because the opening of TST is so parodic – we’re back to questioning whether the things that people associate with Sherlock and think they like about Sherlock are the right things. The fact that Toby reaches a dead end here is important – he’s a weird loose end to have hanging through the episode. When things in Sherlock normally tie together so nicely, this is a section which has absolutely no bearing on the rest of the plot other than to look a bit silly. But fundamentally, we’re talking about the superfluity of style and image here; we’ve been talking about it for a long time in relation to previous adaptations, but TST brings it in in relation to Sherlock itself.
Skipping past more bust breakages, the next scene is John and Mary in bed together – and the first thing we see is them, once again, in a mirror. There’s nothing wrong with this mirror (as far as I can tell) – everything seems to be in order! But it doesn’t break the theme of mirrors misreflecting, because this is the scene that introduces unreliable narration on a big level – this is the scene which deliberately excludes John’s texts to E. John and Eurus are gone into in another chapter so we’ll move on again.
Craig’s quote about people being weird for missing the olden days is, of course, crucial to this reading of Sherlock. It’s pretty on the nose for a show whose protagonist is idealised in the Victorian age – and sums up Mofftiss’s feelings towards the Vincent Starrett 221B poem that I elaborated on in the TAB chapter of this meta: essentially, that it always being 1895 is a very bad thing! Craig’s mockery of this nostalgia puts it into more comprehensible modern terms for us, but it also links Thatcher and 1895 again as pasts to be broken with. It’s also important that Craig says that Thatcher is like Napoleon now – although the titles of most episodes are taken from ACD stories, it’s rare that an explicit reference is made to the link between the titles (nobody mentions scarlet vs. pink in ASiP, for example). This is the first time that I can find that Sherlock shows self-awareness from within the narrative that there are extranarrative stories being played out. I’ve said before that I don’t think Thatcher and Napoleon are a good comparison; whether it is or not, Craig’s reference is actively pulling a metatextual part of Sherlock’s history into his story and forcing him to reckon with it. This is important, because he develops expectations of how this story is going to play out (black pearl of the Borgias) which are wrong – because they’re based on what he has learned to expect of himself as fictional character. We could only have such a reference within the Mind Palace.
For the sake of splitting this meta up to make it readable, I’m going to call time on this half of TST, and we’ll pick it up tomorrow at Jack Sandiford’s house. (Also I don’t know how much text tumblr allows and this is a long document.) Until then!
