when theo and sylvia have their first child rakiel spends the entire pregnancy suggesting silly names, getting more and more ridiculous as time goes on and as he tries to take their minds off any complications that could come up from a child being born from two different species that aren't always biologically compatible. he's pretty sure he loses any naming rights he ever had for the rest of his life some time around the sixth or seventh month but it's worth it when he gets a soft snort from his brother or an amused eye roll from sylvia.

he is not prepared when theo carefully puts into his arms a tiny bundle of blankets wrapped around an even tinier baby and tells him his name is Adrian.

and bepo staying baby is just something i cant stop pointing at because its so adorable and great that he is like that because of law, he didnt have to grow harsh, he didnt have to stop being so silly and weepy and needy. and good for him, he is very coddled but its a good thing he doesnt need to character-develop Out of it, because its wonderful. he is clingy and honest and admires law so much.

also the idea that bepo chan is a proxy replacement for laws younger sister is the funniest thing to me i shouldnt laugh but im laughing

wyatt powers are projection, orbing, orb shield, healing, telekinesis, telekinetic orbing and he is a half split mother’s a witch father’s a whitelighter. i mean i think wyatt was really definitely as like The Witchlighter like at magic school all that like yes paige is a witchlighter but paige did not go to magic school and grow up around a bunch of little witches i think teleportation powers are Insanely Rare for anyone who’s not a halfling so the fact that wyatt can just. orb. he can heal. like this is Insane. but unlike a dency type situation where like these powers are so rare they basically have to be self taught i think there are a good amount of whitelighters at magic school who can teach him how to master his skills there’s also paige and leo so like. he’s pretty much covered. that and the whole whitelighter thing just really does come naturally to him like he was doing all this batshit crazy stuff from the womb like he healed piper from the brink of death at like age two. wyatt’s whitelighter powers are a fuckin breeze. i also think wyatt sort of id’s a little more as a whitelighter than a witch just bc chris is like so witchy wyatt feels like okay i must be more whitelighter by default. like chris will go out demon hunting and wyatt just like. doesn’t really want to do that so wyatt think’s it’s because he’s just more of a whitelighter more of a pacifist by nature. it’s not really it’s more just like chris is fuckin crazy but it doesn’t really matter. i also think that since wyatt is one of the only people with healing when the cousins are in trouble they almost always go to him, which only sort of adds to the Whitelighter element. i also don’t think wyatt has had any charges yet bc like. he’s really young he’s like 22. but i think he definitely will i think that’s something he would want to have. i think the elders also have some slight reservations about giving him charges bc like. very high probability he will fall in love with them.

chris powers are telekinesis, telekinetic orbing, orbing. does not feel very whitelighter at all. i mean for starters, wyatt’s totally Stacked with whitelighter powers that he just seemed to immediately have mastery over chris not so much. and it’s also like. everyone in the family Expected wyatt to have healing and then literally no one expected that of chris. like he tried he read about it all that and whenever he would try the sisters would just be like it’s okay hey you know not everyone has healing healing it’s big like not everyone can master it paige couldn’t heal til she was like 30 it’s nbd so chris is like yeah :| okay :| but it kind of bothers him how it’s like. his family just knew he wouldn’t be able to do that. and beyond that i think chris really does have this desire to prove himself in the craft to prove he’s a strong, talented, capable witch (which he is) and that’s really where he directs his focus. the power he hones the most it telekinesis. orbing and tlk orbing kinda of take a back seat simply bc they just aren’t as strong of combative powers (however, paige let him in on the insider secret that you can orb hearts of demons so that’s p fuckin cool. leo like Freaked out when paige told him this because he’s just a kid!! he doesn’t need to be hearing all of that!!! and paige is like yeah, just a kid who fights demons, leo. he’s seen worse and chris just looks at leo like yeah i mean i have and leo’s like cool gonna go have another parenting crisis). basically while chris knows he is a witchlighter he very much does not feel like one. he identifies as a witch. full stop. (side note he does not know he was the time traveller who came back to fix the timeline and if he found out and found out that he convincingly posed as a whitelighter and people actually believed him i think he’d lose it laughing)

melinda powers are empathy, orbing, telekinesis, telekinetic orbing. i think melinda views her Main Power as empathy, i think melinda considers herself to be more of a pacifist. again, this is kind of in relation to chris, so it’s like considering yourself to be short bc your brother’s 6′5″, but like. melinda is short. and she is more of a pacifist. i think given her empathy which is technically a whitelighter power tho it is much power likely she inherited the power from her aunt phoebe, she’s not really like. a fighter or a powerhouse or anything i think she also inherited piper’s want of a normal life. in my writings melinda is actually a nursing student i mean she’s a freshman in college but like. she wants to be like a nurse or a doctor she hasn’t entirely figured out how that would work with her like. Witch Schedule. but she kind of doesn’t care?? like she has a full family of charmed ones. they can save the day by magical means; she can save them by mortal ones. she also just like as a fun fact with her empathy powers can diagnose things really well because she can just like. feel what other people are feeling. so yes i think she’s really more whitelighter than witch i think if people ever saw her out and about with her whitelighter (i gave her a new whitelighter that isn’t leo in canon explanation is the elders are kind of worried the halliwells are getting a bit too cliquey little bit too much of a feedback loop there and they don’t really have the best relationship to the elders so like. now that one of them has kind of broken off into her own path they’re like okay can we give her a new whitelighter. just to kind of make sure they don’t all hate us. out of canon explanation i think it’s more fun for melinda to have a whitelighter her age instead of constantly dragging her dad to davis). i also think melinda is the most likely out of any of the next gen to receive a charge, but again, this is like, way out bc she’d like. 18. i also think she would keep her whitelighter on speed dial bc i think she’d be Super Nervous about fucking shit up like so bad for the first couple while. like eventually she’d get the hang of it and be confident and capable in herself and her abilities but for the first bit she’d be like. so so so anxious like s1 piper need to have everything be perfect when it most definitely is not.

tamora powers are molecular combustion, healing, invisibility, psychic link with kat. so. tamora’s technically like only 1/4 whitelighter as neither of her parents are whitelighters, her maternal grandfather is a whitelighter and that’s it. so that’s why both her and kat are a little less whitelightery that the rest of the next gen tamora can’t even orb. which was like genuinely a shock as literally every other witchlighter in the family can orb, but she just straight up cannot. she can heal, though, and is the only one beside wyatt with that capability, so her whitelighteryness is still there. she just can’t orb. and then while molecular combustion as a power obviously came from piper, healing, invisibility, and even her psychic link with her twin are all very whitelighter-y. (side note, it is specifically the whitelighter part of the twins that give them this link just like how all whitelighters are linked to their charges, them being twins just like. amplifies it. it also allows kat to always be able to orb tamora to her side and sometimes orb her other places without ever seeing her but that bit still doesn’t work that great. so while part of it is a Twin Thing, it’s also a whitelighter thing, which is why like warren and sheridan do not share a psychic link. note pt.2 the girls powers were bound when they were kids bc they had i mean like p dangerous powers at least tam did but as established by the fact that paige could always orb despite having her powers bound, their whitelighter abilities were always active. kat could always orb, tamora could always heal, their psychic abilities stayed active.) and like, because of this it’s the same though i’m just leaving the parenthesis before i forget, tamora for the longest time had no offensive power the only thing she could do was heal. she was also kind of like the coward to kat’s fearlessness or even just like henry’s popularity. she’s the shyest out any of her siblings, a lot more reserved, she has anxiety, blah blah blah. so she never felt very witchy. she had her whitelighter power and her cowardice. and kat was off running around having a wild time and henry was reading about the most terrifying demons known to man shit that have clawed their way out of the underbelly of the earth and tam’s just like. like no?? stop??? oh my god??? and then around age 14 when the girls entered high school they unbound their powers and started to train them and tamora just really only felt more uncomfortable in her own skin bc like. molecular combustion, man. and piper would teach her like how to use her powers like okay you just really really angry and you throw out your hands like BAM and she blows up a chair and turns to tamora with that cute lil grin on her face like okay now you try and tamora just feels so out of place man. like her aunt piper is this fuckin powerhouse and this power is like. it’s just too much for her like she always somehow felt like there was some cosmic swap some mistake in the grand design where she and kat got mixed up somehow and she should have freezing and kat who’s bold and fun and brave and strong should be able to blow things up. because this isn’t her. this is too much for her, it’s too loud it’s too. strong. that being said, she’s always had a knack for it, which she doesn’t realize bc like. it’s a very rare power. but she was able to gain mastery over it faster than piper did in her day. so piper knows it’s not a cosmic mix up. she knows this is the power tamora was meant to have, and some day she’ll grow into it. it’ll just take time. but yeah. witchcraft is not so much tamora’s speed she doesn’t like. necessarily identify more with her whitelighter half (or fourth but whatever) but she does just. like she likes those powers more she feels more comfortable with them. i think if she were to body swap with kat she’d be perfectly fine at orbing too. in regards to charges she is Also 18 so again long way out i think she would be open to the idea but it would necessarily be something she’d like really really Want to do i think like her whole dynamic with peyton would really be her jumping off point for whitelightering but if she got someone who was a lot more just like. into making bad decisions i don’t think tam has the backbone yet to tell them off. 

kat powers are molecular immobilization, orbing, omnilingualism, psychic link with kat. absolutely no on the whitelighter front. yeah she can orb and is omnilingual doesn’t even register those as whitelighter powers. considers herself a witch through and through. is not wise, is impulsive, is reckless, is a witch. would never take a charge. if she did, she’d go on all their adventures with them bc that’s just the type of person she is. doesn’t to the vague, gentle guiding of a whitelighter she is not vague. she is also very close with chris bc they have such similar ideologies. but yeah. she’s not a whitelighter.

pj powers are levitation, astral projection, beaming, sensing love we have exited whitelighter territory and entered cupid territory i think pj very much identifies as Cupid-Witch i think she is Thee hyphenate i think she wholeheartedly embraces both parts of her craft as the eldest of her charmed ones set she does feel the need to like Set a Good Example she measures out all her potions ingredients perfectly and mastered spell writing from an early age she treats the craft with respect. she doesn’t necessarily treat the cupid practice with respect that’s not quite the right word there’s no dignity it’s all fun. bc love is fun!! her and parker have a running betting pool on various relationships in school. melinda would sometimes put down money, now that peyton goes to school with them she’ll also place bets. henry jr also does this despite having zero magical abilities to sense anything he thinks that makes it more fun. but yeah. pj views herself as cupid. she loves giving relationships the little Push they need to blossom. people think it’s because she has an advice columnist for a mom and they like trust her bc like. she’s nice and her dad’s a relationship therapist her mom’s an advice columnist and almost everyone has at least one friend that pj has had a hand in their relationship so if she sets something up they’ll trust her. the school newspaper suggested that she actually start an advice column or a matchmaking thing but she turned it down bc like. she doesn’t do remote, y’know. her cupid powers are very personal, she needs to see it irl all the move parts before she makes a judgement call. but yes. very cupid. loves saying it, too. people are like wow you’re so good at relationships she’s like yeah i’m basically cupid lmao. parker boos every time she makes that joke.

parker powers are premonition, beaming, sensing love. so parker definitely considers herself a cupitch not just a witch but she doesn’t go as far pj just bc that’s not like her mo. pj does have a slightly higher eq than parker a bit more of a gentle touch they stay neck in neck in their betting pool because of parker’s premonition power however pj knows her sister can see the future and frequently engages to change the circumstances. parker does meddle as much as her sister. and like yeah parker is p witchy she does focus a lot on combat she did turn her cupid ring into an athame bc like. fuck yeah. but she isn’t like chris or kat where she’s like I Am A Witch Full Stop she really does see herself as a cupid she had yet to like. Set Up a relationship like pj does but she doesn’t consider herself any less cupid for that she is a cupid that is who she is. she’d just like. a tiny violent one. 

peyton powers are telekinesis, beaming, sensing love. again kind of like parker where she still very much identifies as half cupid she just doesn’t do mayn cupid things. i mean she’s also like 14 so like give it time but yeah pj was ten and putting couples together on the playground like it was wild. and it’s not like parker where she doesn’t have the eq to do it like parker just straight up doesn’t know what to say to steer to people together she’d just be like hey u to r in love with each other so. have at it. like baby peyton could probably get it right in the very subtle classic cupid manner she’s just too shy. like she could not imagine just walking up to someone and talking to them lmao. especially not about love. and since the girls aren’t full cupid they don’t have temporal manipulation they can’t move through time nor can they slow it down to speak to people’s subconscious but if she could that’s what peyton would do. bc she does love love in the very true cupid sense she just like. like talking to people?? aaaaaa amirite lads.

It was just a few months before their wedding now. One would have thought that he would have ‘met the in-laws’ long before this.

“It’s... complicated,” Lou had admitted, after an afternoon of pacing around their house, talking in Japanese over the phone and his tone ranging from aggravated and sheepish to sincere and even a bit excited. As it turned out, his handsome fiance had siblings. Not just one or two, but six.

“Wait wait, we’ve got other uncles and aunties besides just Shen?” Raph had said, his brothers looking just as confused.

“You do,” Lou had sighed before explaining the story. Some things, like Lou’s poor relationship with his father, his mother passing away when he was young, and he and Shen running away to Tokyo when Lou was 18, and then to America once they started making a name for themselves, remained the same, being the same story he had told Draxum years ago.

What he had neglected to mention was that he also had three brothers and three sisters, all ranging in age. He got along decently with all of them - though he admitted that he was sometimes creeped out by his youngest sister, and his oldest brother could be stern and a bit of an ass at times, but there was still love and care there with all his siblings.

Still, being a bitter teenager just barely on the threshold of adulthood, Lou had lashed out on more than one occasion, insulted that not all of his siblings believed he would make it on his own. They hadn’t completely supported his dream of becoming a star, and a couple of them like Nori and Saki thought he still needed their protection. So, Lou had cut contact - first out of spite, then because he was so busy with films and being a celebrity, then out of depression... It had been a couple months after adopting his boys did he finally remember his family, and wondered how they were doing now.

Still, between the distance between them and the frayed strands of siblinghood, they stuck to letters once or twice a year as their primary source of communication, despite a couple of his siblings pushing for more. But, it would seem that the tabloid’s exposing his and Draxum’s engagement was the straw that broke the camel’s back, as it were. His siblings were coming for a visit, at Saki’s stern insistence. Lou would see his siblings again for the first time in years, his boys would meet their aunts and uncles...

And Draxum would be meeting his in-laws. Not just ‘best friends who were practically family’ like with Shen, but actual in-laws. So, here he was, standing by the door with his family, dressed in a teal blue dress shirt and a gold tie, hoping to make a good first impression.

Lou opened his door, and his siblings practically piled in. Even if they all had their own unique features and styles, Draxum could already see a bit of family resemblance. Still, the fact that Lou was the only one in the Hamato bunch with a pompadour made him smile a little.

Lou greeted them all in Japanese, giving hugs and handshakes while answering questions, also in Japanese. Japanese that, despite a few years of trying to learn, his boys just couldn’t hope understand due to how fast their relatives spoke. “I’m gonna start speaking Spanish if they don’t stop speaking Japanese,” Leo mumbled during it all, pouting a bit after trying and failing to translate. Draxum sympathetically patted his head.

Thankfully, Lou didn’t take too long to notice that the rest of his family was feeling a bit out of the loop. So, clearing his throat, he got everyone to quiet down. “Alright. My brothers and sisters,” he began, “I’d like you to meet, my oldest Raphael-” He touched the shoulder of the eleven year old in red- “my ten year old twins, Donatello and Leonardo-” He gestured to each of them, not wanting his siblings to mix them up- “My youngest, Michelangelo-” the nine year old in orange grinned, happily waving at them, “and finally... my beloved fiance, Dr. Benjamin Draxum.”

Draxum bowed slightly at them. “It’s a pleasure to meet you all.”

“It is good to finally meet you as well, Doctor!” one of Lou’s brothers said, smiling at him.

Draxum chuckled. “Please, just Ben is fine.”

“Very well, I-”

“He is Kenji,” another brother, obviously the oldest, said as he took the lead on introductions, “and I am Saki. And this-” he gestured to each of his remaining siblings in order of age, “is Nori, Hiroki, Hikari and Mei.” Each of the siblings nodded at their brother’s fiance before turning their attention to their nephews.

Nori took a knee so she could look the boys in the eyes. “It’s very nice to finally meet you four,” she smiled, “We have much to catch up on, huh?” The boys smiled back at her. She may have been a total stranger, but her kindness and friendliness was already reminding them of their Auntie Shen.

“We should sit,” Saki spoke up, before adding, “if that is alright. We can’t exactly have a proper visit in the doorway, after all. Unless you are planning on kicking us out already, Yoshi.” 

Lou sighed a little, shaking his head. Same old Saki. “Make yourselves at home. Sorry there isn’t much seating, but I can grab a chair from the kitchen if anyone needs one. I’ll also make some tea - you all still like ginseng, right?”

They all settled in the living room, and within an hour, they were already getting along like family. The boys took most of the conversation, telling their aunts and uncles about their favorite things and sharing stories. Lou told the story of the day he first met his boys, and then told the story of the night he and Draxum first met - with Mikey butting in when necessary to tell his side.

Kenji chuckled. “It almost sounds like a movie!”

“Believe me, I’m well aware of the irony,” Draxum quipped, chuckling along with him. He felt Mikey hug his leg, the gesture feeling nostalgic given that the boy hadn’t done that since he was six or seven.

“Yeah, Ben is a great dad,” Mikey said, glancing up at his soon-to-be father, “I know I’m definitely glad I found him instead of someone else that night.”

“Well, he’s not your official stepfather yet,” Saki mumbled, quiet enough for the children not to hear him. Nori still elbowed him for it.

The Hamatos shared stories as well, tales that Lou remembered from childhood as well as new ones he hadn’t heard before. It was slightly bittersweet, with Lou silently wishing that he hadn’t stubbornly waited to get in contact with his family again. Still, this wouldn’t be the first time he had to fix mistakes he made in his youth, and at the very least, Lou was certain that even after his wedding, there would still be plenty of family visits. 

When suppertime came around, Saki insisted on ordering giant platters from a New York sushi place that they could all enjoy, thinking it appropriate to splurge for an occasion such as a family reunion... And he volunteered Draxum to help him pick it up.

Lou gave his oldest brother a bit of look, but Draxum agreed without hesitation, standing up from the couch and following Saki out the door. Despite the difference in weather and setting, he couldn’t help but feel a bit of deja vu, being reminded of that Christmas Eve nearly three years ago.

“You and my brother get along well,” Saki said finally, after driving in silence for several minutes. Even though he kept his eyes on the road, Draxum could see the sharp sternness in his eyes. Not from malice, though, but from fierce protectiveness. Saki was easily the most serious in this generation of Hamatos, and he took his family very seriously.

Still, Draxum didn’t flinch. “We do,” he said, a small smile on his face, “I’ll admit, I wouldn’t have expected it either. But we-... I connected with him almost instantly.”

“Oh?” Saki said, though it sounded more like a statement than a question.

“...There was this one time, during a first few months of dating,” Draxum began, “Lou had done an interview, and somehow - not his fault, but the fault of a very nosey talkshow host - word got out that we were dating. It was... stressful, to say the least. I met more reporters and members of the paparazzi that week than I had in my entire life, and I nearly had to get a new phone number. ...We almost didn’t make it, because I wasn’t sure if I could handle the stress of, well, that whole situation that came with dating a well known celebrity.”

“...” Saki spared him a glance. “Then what made you stay?”

Draxum smiled again. “I missed him... Him and the boys, and it was then that I decided that I would rather deal with the rough and sometimes aggravating times with him and his family by my side than have peaceful times on my own. Lou made me happy, like no one else had, as did his children. And so, I decided that I was going to try and make them as happy as they made me in return. I wasn’t going to be a coward, and I was going to fight for the ones I loved. ...The ones I never knew I needed until they were nearly gone.”

Saki said nothing, just kept driving. Draxum didn’t mind, he had already said his piece, and if Saki still didn’t approve of him... Well, so be it. He still would try and connect with Lou’s relatives as much as he could of course, but he wasn’t going anywhere.

However, when they arrived at the sushi restaurant, Saki stopped him before they went inside. “My younger brother and I... we have not always seen eye-to-eye,” Saki began, his eyes losing their sharpness and instead taking on an air of fatigue, “But I have always cared about him. Try to guide him, protect him, even when I was angry or frustrated with him... When we did not hear from him in so long, only knowing that he was still alive because he was still in films, and then even losing that eventually... I can not tell you how worried I was about him.”

Draxum gave him a sympathetic look, but said nothing, not wanting to interrupt.

“...Then, when I heard about him getting married - married to someone who could see his fame and fortune as the only reason for marriage, someone who could break my foolish brother’s heart... I became worried once again. ...However-” His eyes became softer now. “I can see that you are not that type of man, Dr. Benjamin.”

Draxum nodded, appreciating the respect. “Thank you, Saki.”

“Do not thank me yet,” Saki snapped slightly, scowling once more, “You still have a lot to prove, and like I said, you are not part of this family yet! Not until the wedding, and even then-! ...However, eventually... I think I could see you being a good brother-in-law, as well as a good husband and father.”

“I can assure you,” Draxum promised him, his voice unwavering, “I am going to do whatever I can for them, and that I care about them with all my heart.”

Saki stared at him, and then nodded. A sign of acceptance, if only a small one. “Come, before the sushi starts to get warm,” he said, heading inside the restaurant. Draxum followed, relaxing somewhat.

It wasn’t long before they returned, platters in hand. Conversation and laughter filled the old home once again as stories were shared and connections were strengthened. Even Saki managed to smile once or twice! At one point, Draxum felt Lou squeeze his hand, his fiance happier than he ever thought he’d be and wondering why they hadn’t done this sooner. Draxum leaned over to kiss him, silently promising him many more evenings like this.

They were a family, and even if he still didn’t have the complete approval of his in-laws yet, Draxum wasn’t worried. It was like he had said before, he was planning on staying by his family’s side no matter what, and he would do all he could for them to make sure they were happy. It was the least he could do, and he was happy to do it.

...Besides, even if he had wanted to, he couldn’t leave yet. After all, there were still plenty more funny and slightly-embarrassing stories from Lou’s youth that he wanted to hear, much to his fiance’s dismay.

My aunt is a jerk, but gets her just desserts in the end

This is going to be a bit of a long one, and while I think it's worth it (or I wouldn't be posting it), I'll keep this as brief as possible. For those that just want the tl;dr I'll do my best to summarize at the end.

Back in the late 1980s my mother ("Nancy") was diagnosed with a degenerative neurological condition. My father was working long hours to put a roof over our heads and keep my mom seeing the best doctors, and eventually my parents realized that with two small kids and a body that was slowly but surely shutting down on her, she needed more help. We had an au pair for a while but it wasn't a great fit. There was talk of hiring a nursing company to provide in-home care but my mom's sister "Linda" very graciously offered to let us (my mom, my sister, and me) come live with their family, and that she would be happy to take care of her little sister. After a few months of working out the details my parents and my aunt and uncle agreed to the following:

- My dad would pay for construction of a large addition onto my aunt and uncle's home. This would be a fully separate home with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, and an unfinished basement.

- My aunt, who was unemployed, would be the primary caretaker for my mom for the foreseeable future. My aunt claimed that she'd care for her "until one of us dies" but I think we all expected it would be more like ten or fifteen years.

- My mom would have living rights to the addition until her death.

- Upon my mother's death, our claim to the addition would be relinquished and my aunt and uncle would own it outright.

In 1990 my mom, my sister, and I moved three hours away to live with my aunt and her family. (My dad stayed behind to continue working, and this separation did eventually result in a mostly friendly divorce.) Things went well enough at first, and within six or eight months the addition was built and we moved out of their spare room and into our new home. It would be a lie to say it was "massive", but it more than doubled the size of their house. We had our own exterior doors, our own heating and cooling, most every utility. Electricity and plumbing were shared, but I think that was about it. For the first eighteen months or so, my aunt mostly held up her end of the bargain, but soon after the cracks started to form. My uncle left my aunt in early 1991. Linda started getting lazy with my mom and consequently her health was suffering, so my dad hired a home nursing outfit to come in every day and care for her. Linda took this as permission to stop helping with anything at all. Mom soon became bedridden (not my aunt's fault, the disease is terrible) and couldn't leave the home, so Linda would do mom's shopping for her... but started buying more than just my Christmas presents or our groceries. A little at first, then a lot. Eventually my mom's credit card bills really caught my dad's notice. All told, we calculated that she had run up about $20,000 USD in purchases that were for either her or her kids. (This was in the early 1990s; according to the inflation calculator I just looked at, that's the equivalent of about $40,000 USD now.) My dad was working seventy hour weeks for the overtime so he could cover his own mortgage, repaying his 401k for the loan he took out to build the addition, and these massive credit card bills. By late 1993 there was a confrontation. My dad canceled the credit cards and said "you are spending me dry, I can't have surprise bills like these any more" and my aunt in turn said "get the fuck out of my house". Since it was an addition and not technically a separate home, and since my dad didn't have the money for an expensive legal battle, there was little we could do, living rights be damned.

Right at that same time, the house went into foreclosure. Linda had stopped paying the mortgage six or so months before (I'm fuzzy on this number, but it's in the ballpark) and the bank foreclosed. Linda didn't have the money to get current on the mortgage. My dad began making plans to buy the mortgage from the bank and take ownership of the whole property. Things were looking good on this front, and he told us that we'd be able to stay in our home (by this point I was twelve years old and had lots of friends, so I really did not want to move). His plan was that he would charge Linda a fair rent for her half of the house, we would continue to live in our half, and the door that connected the two halves would be forever locked, sort of like a duplex.

It's at this point that I need to introduce the last character to the story, whom I will call "Maria". Maria was the first wife of my mom's- and Linda's older brother. They had been married for a short time in the 1970s and Maria became very close with her new sisters-in-law. After she split from my uncle, she remained very friendly with both Linda's family and mine, and growing up I called her "Aunt Maria". Anyway, Linda now knows that my dad is planning on buying the house from the bank and she panics (makes sense, losing your home is scary). She calls anyone she can think of that will give her the money to get current on the mortgage, and Maria finally comes through and says "Yeah, of course I'll help you out." Linda calls my dad and gloats that she's not losing her house and reiterates that my mom, my sister, and I can move right the fuck out. My dad calls Maria and tries to convince her not to swoop in and save Linda's bacon: "a move is gonna be hard for the kids and extremely hard for Nancy, Linda has neglected Nancy and not held up her end of the bargain", etc. Maria says that she's committed to her decision. My dad gives one bit of advice that will wind up being very important: "Well then, don't just give her money to get current on her mortgage; she'll fall behind again soon enough, the house will still get foreclosed on, and you'll be out the money you gave her. Buy the mortgage from the bank instead and just charge Linda rent, that way you've at least got something for your money."

In early 1994, we move out of the addition. By early 1996, Maria rings my dad up. She did indeed buy the mortgage from the bank and now owns the property outright. Linda swore up and down that she would pay rent but lo and behold, she hasn't paid any rent over the last two years. Maria asked if my dad would be interested in buying the property from her. It was a bit of a stretch since he was paying for two homes (his, and the one I lived in with my mom and sister), but he put the money together and soon enough we owned the property in question. At this point, Linda is in touch with my dad and is no longer extremely nasty and threatening to him - she's as sweet as can be, promising that she will pay him rent and be a great tenant. My dad said "that's fine, you can rent the house, but if you miss a payment I will begin eviction proceedings immediately." They drew up a contract, signed it, and I think she made two rent payments before calling up and asking for more time. He told her "I'm sorry Linda, but if you don't have money in my hands by the due date spelled out in the contract, I am going to evict you." The date came and went, the money never showed up, and my dad gleefully began eviction proceedings. They knew my dad meant business and moved out on their own before the sheriff did it for them.

We owned the house as a rental property for several years, using the income to fund my mom's medical care. Despite being separated since 1990, my parents stayed married until 2002 so that my mom would have health insurance. My dad gave the house to my mom in the divorce settlement, and it was sold to pay for her care in a nursing facility, where she lived from 2000 until her death in 2009.

tl;dr - mom had a degenerative neurological condition, dad couldn't care for her and keep a roof over our heads, aunt offered to care for mom, dad built a large addition onto aunt's home with the understanding that we would live there (and that aunt would care for mom) until mom's death, aunt soon stopped caring for mom, aunt ran up huge bills on my mom's credit card, dad confronted aunt, aunt kicked us out, a few years later dad bought the house and kicked aunt out.

For a good long minute I thought you were talking about Klaus Mikaelson and I was like “sure I guess, but be prepared for my inner Klaroline shipper to be unleashed” xD 

BUT LET’S GET TO IT 

- Chlaus was born the son of a drunken North American pioneer. His mother died in childbirth, with doctors claiming “she wasn’t doing much but taking up space…look at what she’s become. A New York debutante who married for love. Left her gilded Fifth Avenue cage for this horse shit. A waste I tell you - a complete and utter waste. Girl was never meant for this sorta life…a pioneer man’s wife. Her hands were never meant for this sorta work.” 

- Chlaus’s father soon devolved into alcoholism, leaving Chlaus as primary caretaker of his three young siblings. He soon dropped out of school and began working at a coal mine in Schullsburg, Wisconsin to support them. 

- During that time Schullsburg faced the harshest winter it’d seen in years. His two younger brothers died and Chlaus got himself deep with the loan sharks in a desperate bid to buy the medication he needed for his sole surviving sibling - his sister, Amelia. 

- Before long, Chlaus was trading in his coal miner’s pick for a gun and blood money. Outwardly, he was a young, ambitious law clerk on the rise - a diamond in the rough. No one knew the desperate hours Chlaus spent in the basement of his rented home, trying with painstaking effort to shed his thick midwestern accent, to carefully enunciate the French words so often used, to learn the “right” mannerisms, to speak properly, to try and send his sister to the best schools and endure the humiliation of headmasters saying no because he didn’t have the name or fortune to send her there. 

- It wasn’t until 1871 that Chlaus took on what everybody else in the Underworld considered a hangman’s job - to kidnap and ransom Frances Phantomhive, the younger sister of the Queen’s Watchdog. The payment would be three million British pounds. The contractor who issued the job? A shadowy figure known only as The Angel. 

- It was during this disastrous escapade that Chlaus encountered the Phantomhive siblings in all their glory. Stunned, overwhelmed, desperate, and stubborn, Chlaus tried to cut off his own arm in a frantic bid to get away from the merciless Queen’s Watchdog. 

- He was forced on his knees in front of the Phantomhive siblings but refused to give in. (“There are things in life I fear even more than you, Earl Phantomhive. You may offer me death and your sister, a last fleeting glimpse of beauty before my eyes close forever. But I tell you this - I’d sooner be drawn and quartered then die in this godforsaken country of yours. Not while I’ve still got something to fight for.”) 

- And Vincent, after hearing those words, offered Chlaus a trial by fire. If he passed, he would live. If not…well, Diedrich was gonna come down to London in two weeks anyway. He could deal with scraping Chlaus’s liver off the Whitechapel streets.

- And Chlaus? Well, he’d never been a gambling man but for one last chance at life - for one last chance to see his sister before he died - it was a chance he’d be willing to take. 

- Come 1888, at the ball where Vincent brought his two young sons, Chlaus - in a glittering ballroom filled to the brim with London’s elite - was the guest of honor. It was on that night that nobles shook his hand, that the Queen’s Watchdog joked by his side as they watched Chlaus’s sister, Amelia, walk down the aisle. 

Aaaaand that’s a rough outline of Chlaus’s background that I’ve got going. I’ve always envisioned him as this savvy, cosmopolitan jokester with a penchant for travel and a past as humble as that of any working man’s. It’s probably why O!Ciel was so fond of his “uncle” Chlaus - a man who reinvented himself through sheer force of will?

Jeremiah 26:1-27:22, 2 Thessalonians 3:1-18, Psalms 85:1-13, Proverbs 25:16

Today is the 15th day of October. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I'm Brian. It's great to be here with you. I was just thinking is this the dead center of the month? But this is a month with 31 days, so I guess we gotta get halfway through this day and then we're halfway through the month. Anyway, welcome to the center of the tenth month of the year. It's great to be here with you and we've all come together around the global campfire today for one primary purpose and that is to take the next step forward and allow God's word to speak into and over and under and around our lives today. Which will take us back into the book of Jeremiah. And we're reading from the New International Version this week. Jeremiah chapter 26 and 27 today.

Commentary:

Okay. In our reading from Jeremiah today, the prophet Jeremiah was instructed to go into the temple courtyard in the center of Jerusalem and say, This is what the Lord says, if you do not listen to me and follow my law, which I have set before you and if you do not listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I have sent to you again and again, though you have not listened, then I will make this house like Shiloh and this city a curse among the nations of the earth. So, Jeremiah obeyed, but it got him in trouble, which isn't really that shocking. Jeremiah walked into the courtyard of the holiest site in the holiest city and foretold destruction, right? So, he essentially prophesied that everything that gave the Hebrew people an identity would be demolished. So, we could understand how a mob could form around this. But why did God send Jeremiah to say such a thing? Such a foretelling of doom and destruction in such a holy place. Why did God instruct Jeremiah to do that? God says why. Maybe they will listen. Maybe they will turn from their evil ways. Then I will also relent, right? I will change my mind about the disaster I'm ready to pour out on them because of their sinfulness. So, once again we see God giving options through his prophets, right? There's so much foretelling of destruction in the prophets that we can often forget those things hadn't happened yet. They were prophetic utterances giving a warning to the people, a crossroads as it were. Like here you are. If you continue on this path, this is what's gonna happen. But if you return to me, then that can be avoided. So, we've talked about repenting and repentance many times on our journey through the Bible this year. And just by way of reminder, repentance by definition is to change your mind and go in another direction. So, in effect, God sent Jeremiah into the holiest site in the holiest city to tell the people that if they would change their minds, he would also change his mind, which is fascinating indeed because if it's true for them, it's true for us. Jeremiah got mobbed after giving that prophecy. And we can tell why that would happen. And he was dragged in front of the Jewish council and many people wanted him to be executed because he had spoken against the temple, which was a big no-no. And ironically, it's the same accusation that would be aimed at Jesus, right? That he would destroy the temple and raise it up in three days. Six hundred years later, this is the same kind of accusation that would come against Jesus. Of course, Jeremiah isn't killed and so after they kind of debate it all out, Jeremiah's released. But then God tells him to do something almost as inflammatory. So, God told Jeremiah to put a yoke on top of his neck, fasten it to himself with leather straps and then make an announcement to the king of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, Sidon and Israel. So, the ambassadors of these kingdoms were in Jerusalem for some sort of summit and Jeremiah was instructed to tell all of these kingdoms, including Israel, that they needed to surrender to the Babylonian empire. In fact, Jeremiah pleads with Israel's king, why is it that you are intent on dying? Why are you doing everything that you can that is only going to make you die and the people along with you? Of course, nobody listened to Jeremiah, right? So, he was pleading. He was bringing the word of the Lord and nobody was listening. But we can kind of get our minds around why. I mean, that's a lot of kingdoms and a lot of people and it's no small thing for a nation to surrender and be assimilated. So, no one listened, and Babylon did conquer and destroy the land and the people were exiled, which will bring us to one of the most famous verses in the entire Bible. But that'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Prayer:

So, Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You once again for the reminder that You respond to us when we respond to You, no matter what path we're on and no matter what kind of destruction we may be heading into, we can change course. We can repent. We can change our mind. We can change our inner selves and go in a new direction. We can return to You, which will change the destiny of where we end up, which will change the trajectory of where we were going. So Holy Spirit come. Show us the paths that we are on that are only leading to destruction. Let us see them clearly so that we might follow You and navigate off those paths by repenting. Changing course and getting back onto the narrow path that will lead to life. Few find it, but we want to be one of the few and we will never find it without Your guidance. So, we surrender to You. Come Holy Spirit. Lead us into all truth, we pray. In Jesus name we ask. Amen.

Hi this is Jay from New York City. I am a medical student. I’ve called before. I’ve been listening to the Daily Audio Bible for about, I believe like 10 years now and I’m very thankful for this community. It’s always been present, especially during trying times. And I am very prayerful concerning DABbers needs. And I am also encouraged by their praise reports. It’s just a very real community and a very real place to just reflect and appreciate all that God is and all that he does. So, I’m currently…I’m nestled in a bit of a situation. It’s not impossible…as nothing is impossible with God. I’m in my last year of medical school and it’s been eight years. I kind of had to take a longer course because of my parent’s illnesses and because I also had some learning difficulties. I have a learning challenge. So, here I am, my last year, I’m getting a residency in __ and I took my step two CS which is part of the licensing procedure and I did not pass it. It’s comprised of clinical skills, applying clinical skills in a standardized setting with standardized patients who act like patients. I failed on many components and if you fail one component you fail the exam. So, I did not pass and it poses a little bit of a challenge…

First 1700 words of a story of mine...

Below the cut-off is the start of a story I’ve began to write. It’s a blend of fiction and my family’s history. Please do have a read; I’d be glad of any feedback :)

The heart wants what it wants. That is an indisputable fact of life. What varies from human to human is how much pain a heart will take to keep what it always wanted. Some hearts will break, and that person will walk away for their own good, no matter how much it hurts. Other hearts...well, other hearts don't have that much sense. Other hearts just keep patching themselves back up because there isn't anything else that can be done without hurting the people it loves most.

My heart had taken more than its fair share, but still it insisted upon beating. It still took me here, to a life of little money and much trouble. My heart's love for my husband meant that in July 1973, I was bringing up my four small children in utter chaos. I always wondered if part of me liked the madness, even though I lamented constantly that I just wanted everyone to behave themselves.

“Jackie, get off that dyke, now!” I shouted. Jackie, the third child of my four, the one who consistently bore skinned knees and gave the filthiest of glares, had decided that it would be fun to scale the dyke on the edge of the field while I worked. At seven months pregnant, I wasn't about to run over there to catch her when she fell. It was a soft landing of freshly ploughed dirt on one side and a damp, muddy ditch on the other. She'd be fine, though she was bound to overreact, as she always did.

I watched in resignation as Jackie tumbled off the dyke and straight into the loose soil below. I rolled my eyes and said, “Go and get her, Catherine.” My eldest ran over and helped Jackie up. Predictably, Jackie was howling, even though I knew she couldn't have really hurt herself; the dyke could only have been about two and a half feet high. For such a fearless child, it didn't take much for her to burst into tears.

Catherine brought Jackie to me, who still wailed, and said, “Here, Ma, she skint her knees on the dyke.”

“For Christ's sake, bairn,” I said. “Catherine, go and get Da's bottle and a clean rag.” Catherine, ever obedient, ran off in search of Hendry. “That's if the bottle's not empty,” I added under my breath. I couldn't help but resent my husband's drunken disposition. Jackie plunked herself down in the soil and plucked a strawberry from the driel. “Oi!” I scolded her as she bit into it. However, her preoccupation with the berries stopped her from crying, so I wasn't going to stop her. The child was probably starving, anyway – God knows I was. Wee Charlie had been at them an hour ago, and I hadn't stopped him. I often let it slip my mind that there was only eleven months between Jackie and Charlie. At three years old, I already expected so much of Jackie, and our survival depended upon it. My treatment of Catherine was the same, and she was only two and a half years older than Jackie. And then there was Calum, my eldest son who, at the mere age of four, was over with Hendry and Jean – my sister-in-law – lifting boxes of berries.

Catherine returned with a clean rag and the dregs of Hendry's bottle. She gave it to me and said, “Da didn't want to hand it over so I nicked it while Auntie Jean was shoutin' at him.” I smiled slightly; Catherine was learning fast how to deal with Hendry, and probably following my example, but she shouldn't have had to at all.

I got on my knees – no mean feat with a belly the size of mine – and dabbed Jackie's knees the whisky-soaked rag. She screamed, as melodramatic as ever, so I reminded her, “You're not a baby, Jackie. It's just a sting. You know it only lasts a few seconds, so get a grip. I've got enough on my hands with Charlie and your Da without you being a scunner too.” I grabbed a basket and pressed it onto Jackie. “If you can't keep yourself out of bother then get to work like the rest of us.”

She took the basket with a scowl to rival her father's, got to her feet, and stomped off further down the driel in a sulk. “What was Jean shoutin' for, Cathy?”

“Somethin' about Da fightin' somebody last night,” Catherine shrugged. “She was tellin' him he was lucky he wasn't lifted.”

I sighed. My daughter, just shy of six years of age, knew what it was to be lifted. Hardly surprising, given what she was related to, but it was no less infuriating. I only hoped neither Jean nor Hendry had told Catherine or Calum exactly what happened last night. It was nothing short of miraculous that they hadn't heard it going on from their room. Perhaps they had, but they hadn't said anything this morning.

I was just about at my limit with Hendry and his family's carry on. The fighting had no end, and there was no boundary they would not push. Margaret, one of his sisters had told the police he was driving without a license a fortnight ago; a total lie but they were duty bound to pull him over anyway. Last night, Hendry and his elder brother, George, had been out drinking and returned to the house demanding bacon and beans. At some point while I was in the kitchen at midnight, the pair ended up on the floor, trying to take chunks out of each other. And being only five feet tall and seven months pregnant, getting between them had not been easy, and throwing George out had been nothing but a battle of wills. I won, of course, but that wasn't the point.

The point was that I was tired of this. Even having a pregnant wife wasn't enough to deter Hendry from behaving like a maniac. Not that I should have expected it to be. My last four pregnancies were no different. Why on Earth would this one be anything special? The bad behaviour was bound to continue for as long as Hendry was a drunk with a halfway insane family.

“No, no, no,” I said, waddling over to Jackie. “Don't eat that. That's a weed. Just eat the berries and don't let the farmer catch you at it,” I relented. I looked up to see Jean storming down the field, Calum at her heel; I glanced at my watch, unsurprised to find it was half-past three. This was the time Hendry generally chose to cause a fight and stomp away to the pub in a bad mood to spend money he could have put to a better use.

“Jennifer!” Jean shouted as she approached. “I wish you'd do somethin' about that man of yours.”

“He's as much your brother as he is my man,” I snapped. “You deal with him for a change.”

“I've had quarter of a century dealin' with that fool.”

“Jean, what do you expect me to do?” I demanded, handing Calum the basket I was in the process of filling. He took it and started picking without any questions. “Your brothers were ransackin' my livin' room last night. George had to go to Perth and get his nose straightened and his heid checked, Hendry hit him so hard.”

“Let it happen?!” I retorted. “How am I meant to stop it without puttin' this bairn in the road of it?” I asked, pointed down at my massive belly. “It's gonna have a rough start as it is without me puttin' it in harm's way before it's even born!”

“Then he can go alone! I'm not havin' the bairns livin' in the camp. Catherine's goin' into Primary 2 next month, and Calum's away to start Primary 1; they get enough hassle in the school without the ready ammunition for it. And I am not bringin' another newborn into the camp. Jackie nearly died of whoopin' cough because we were too far from a doctor.”

“Then fuckin' keep him in there!” I exploded. “God knows I could do without the torment!”

The shouting caused Charlie to start screaming and crying. Jean strode over and clipped him around the ear. “Get a bloody grip, bairn!” she told him.

Enraged, I pushed her away and picked a wailing Charlie up; Jean's punishment had only made him more upset and much, much louder. “Don't you dare hit any of my bairns again,” I snarled at her. “They are mine to discipline, and that didn't deserve a skelp.” Jean held my stare, her dark eyes seething and her long black hair blowing slightly in the breeze. I always knew there was something about me that got under her skin, but only in that moment was I able to pinpoint the problem she had with me. It was not that I was an outsider or that I had pulled Hendry away from the family. Her problem with me was that she intimidated everyone she came across, and those tactics didn't work with me. I am a Marine Stationed at Camp Pendleton, California. About eight months ago I allowed my room mate to drive my Jeep while I was away attending pre-deployment training for Afghanistan. While there he rolled my Jeep literally down a mountain while under the influence of alcohol. Needless to say the Jeep was totalled and is Unrecoverable from the canyon were it now rests. The heart wants what it wants. That is an indisputable fact of life. What varies from human to human is how much pain a heart will take to keep what it always wanted. Some hearts will break, and that person will walk away for their own good, no matter how much it hurts. Other hearts…well, other hearts don’t have that much sense. Other hearts just keep patching themselves back up because there isn’t anything else that can be done without hurting the people it loves most.

My heart had taken more than its fair share, but still it insisted upon beating. It still took me here, to a life of little money and much trouble. My heart’s love for my husband meant that in July 1973, I was bringing up my four small children in utter chaos. I always wondered if part of me liked the madness, even though I lamented constantly that I just wanted everyone to behave themselves.

“Jackie, get off that dyke, now!” I shouted. Jackie, the third child of my four, the one who consistently bore skinned knees and gave the filthiest of glares, had decided that it would be fun to scale the dyke on the edge of the field while I worked. At seven months pregnant, I wasn’t about to run over there to catch her when she fell. It was a soft landing of freshly ploughed dirt on one side and a damp, muddy ditch on the other. She’d be fine, though she was bound to overreact, as she always did.

I watched in resignation as Jackie tumbled off the dyke and straight into the loose soil below. I rolled my eyes and said, “Go and get her, Catherine.” My eldest ran over and helped Jackie up. Predictably, Jackie was howling, even though I knew she couldn’t have really hurt herself; the dyke could only have been about two and a half feet high. For such a fearless child, it didn’t take much for her to burst into tears.

Catherine brought Jackie to me, who still wailed, and said, “Here, Ma, she skint her knees on the dyke.”

“For Christ’s sake, bairn,” I said. “Catherine, go and get Da’s bottle and a clean rag.” Catherine, ever obedient, ran off in search of Hendry. “That’s if the bottle’s not empty,” I added under my breath. I couldn’t help but resent my husband’s drunken disposition. Jackie plunked herself down in the soil and plucked a strawberry from the driel. “Oi!” I scolded her as she bit into it. However, her preoccupation with the berries stopped her from crying, so I wasn’t going to stop her. The child was probably starving, anyway – God knows I was. Wee Charlie had been at them an hour ago, and I hadn’t stopped him. I often let it slip my mind that there was only eleven months between Jackie and Charlie. At three years old, I already expected so much of Jackie, and our survival depended upon it. My treatment of Catherine was the same, and she was only two and a half years older than Jackie. And then there was Calum, my eldest son who, at the mere age of four, was over with Hendry and Jean – my sister-in-law – lifting boxes of berries.

Catherine returned with a clean rag and the dregs of Hendry’s bottle. She gave it to me and said, “Da didn’t want to hand it over so I nicked it while Auntie Jean was shoutin’ at him.” I smiled slightly; Catherine was learning fast how to deal with Hendry, and probably following my example, but she shouldn’t have had to at all.

I got on my knees – no mean feat with a belly the size of mine – and dabbed Jackie’s knees the whisky-soaked rag. She screamed, as melodramatic as ever, so I reminded her, “You’re not a baby, Jackie. It’s just a sting. You know it only lasts a few seconds, so get a grip. I’ve got enough on my hands with Charlie and your Da without you being a scunner too.” I grabbed a basket and pressed it onto Jackie. “If you can’t keep yourself out of bother then get to work like the rest of us.”

She took the basket with a scowl to rival her father’s, got to her feet, and stomped off further down the driel in a sulk. “What was Jean shoutin’ for, Cathy?”

“Somethin’ about Da fightin’ somebody last night,” Catherine shrugged. “She was tellin’ him he was lucky he wasn’t lifted.”

I sighed. My daughter, just shy of six years of age, knew what it was to be lifted. Hardly surprising, given what she was related to, but it was no less infuriating. I only hoped neither Jean nor Hendry had told Catherine or Calum exactly what happened last night. It was nothing short of miraculous that they hadn’t heard it going on from their room. Perhaps they had, but they hadn’t said anything this morning.

I was just about at my limit with Hendry and his family’s carry on. The fighting had no end, and there was no boundary they would not push. Margaret, one of his sisters had told the police he was driving without a license a fortnight ago; a total lie but they were duty bound to pull him over anyway. Last night, Hendry and his elder brother, George, had been out drinking and returned to the house demanding bacon and beans. At some point while I was in the kitchen at midnight, the pair ended up on the floor, trying to take chunks out of each other. And being only five feet tall and seven months pregnant, getting between them had not been easy, and throwing George out had been nothing but a battle of wills. I won, of course, but that wasn’t the point.

The point was that I was tired of this. Even having a pregnant wife wasn’t enough to deter Hendry from behaving like a maniac. Not that I should have expected it to be. My last four pregnancies were no different. Why on Earth would this one be anything special? The bad behaviour was bound to continue for as long as Hendry was a drunk with a halfway insane family.

“No, no, no,” I said, waddling over to Jackie. “Don’t eat that. That’s a weed. Just eat the berries and don’t let the farmer catch you at it,” I relented. It was, after all, partly my fault they had not eaten today. I had been stupid enough to give the only decent food in the kitchen to Hendry and George last night. All we’d had left this morning was stale bread.

The hours passed, and the children settled without complaint into the task of picking berries, even if they did eat a handful every so often. I couldn’t begrudge them that.

I looked up to see Jean storming down the field, Calum at her heel; I glanced at my watch, unsurprised to find it was half-past three. This was the time Hendry generally chose to cause a fight and stomp away to the pub in a bad mood to spend money he could have put to a better use.

“Jennifer!” Jean shouted as she approached. “I wish you’d do somethin’ about that man of yours.”

“He’s as much your brother as he is my man,” I snapped. “You deal with him for a change.”

“I’ve had quarter of a century dealin’ with that fool.”

“Jean, what do you expect me to do?” I demanded, handing Calum the basket I was in the process of filling. He took it and started picking without any questions. “Your brothers were ransackin’ my livin’ room last night. George had to go to Perth and get his nose straightened and his heid checked, Hendry hit him so hard.” “Why did you let that happen?!” Jean asked, her tone filled with accusation and outrage.

“Let it happen?!” I retorted. “How am I meant to stop it without puttin’ this bairn in the road of it?” I asked, pointed down at my massive belly. “It’s gonna have a rough start as it is without me puttin’ it in harm’s way before it’s even born!”

“He needs to go back into the camp!”

“Then he can go alone! I’m not havin’ the bairns livin’ in the camp. Catherine’s goin’ into Primary 2 next month, and Calum’s away to start Primary 1; they get enough hassle in the school without the ready ammunition for it. And I am not bringin’ another newborn into the camp. Jackie nearly died of whoopin’ cough because we were too far from a doctor.”

Jean glared at me. “You’re livin’ in a cottage barely two miles from the camp. How did you think he’d react?”

“Then fuckin’ keep him in there!” I exploded. “God knows I could do without the torment!”

The shouting caused Charlie to start screaming and crying. Jean strode over and clipped him around the ear. “Get a bloody grip, bairn!” she told him.

Enraged, I pushed her away and picked a wailing Charlie up; Jean’s punishment had only made him more upset and much, much louder. “Don’t you dare hit any of my bairns again,” I snarled at her. “They are mine to discipline, and that didn’t deserve a skelp.” Jean held my stare, her dark eyes seething and her long black hair blowing slightly in the breeze. I always knew there was something about me that got under her skin, but only in that moment was I able to pinpoint the problem she had with me. It was not that I was an outsider or that I had pulled Hendry away from the family. Her problem with me was that she intimidated everyone she came across, and those tactics didn’t work with me. I was not scared of her. “I suggest you leave me and my children to our business, and get over to Dunkeld and bullyrag your brothers into some sensible thinkin’. It’s mair use than stayin’ here and gettin’ me uptight. Last thing I need is to go into labour before the bairn’s due.”

Jean, looking thoroughly unimpressed, strode away out of the field. I heard the car start up and pull away; as usual, I was left here to work on my own while looking after Catherine, Calum, Jackie and Charlie. Really, I didn’t expect anything else of his family or my own, and I’d long given up hope of ever being pleasantly surprised by any of them, but it didn’t lessen my urge to swing for them all with my pretty decent right hook.

“C'mon, Cathy. Take your sister and brothers,” I sighed, “take these up the hill,” I added, indicating to the baskets and buckets filled with strawberries. “And hold Charlie’s hand,” I reminded her. They were so small, and I knew I saddled them with responsibility too young, when they ought t have been carefree; unfortunately, survival was only possible in my world with their cooperation and help. Between them, they almost negated the burden of holding up their father.

I was not mother of the year. I was stressed, short-tempered, impatient, strict, just about penniless, and I expected too much of them. I did, however, love them. I guessed Hendry loved them too. It just so happened he was rarely sober enough to show them, and when he was sober, he was too enraged by the fact he was sober to express any affection for them whatsoever.

I loved my children enough to almost wish I’d never brought them into this world. Almost. I could not go just that far, but I did wish I’d brought them into the normal world. The world where it was just me and them and the little sane family I had. The world where Hendry either pulled himself together or disappeared from our lives. The world where my children were not surrounded by aunts of whom they were utterly terrified, who berated them for every childish move they made, who refused to let them just be children.

But of course, this was my fault. I brought them into this world, when I took up with their father, got involved with this family. If I had not run away from home, if I had not taken up with Hendry as a teenager, I would not be here with four children, a fifth on the way, working for a pittance while my husband drank what money we did manage to earn.

It did no good to dwell on such thoughts, I remembered as we approached the yard with our haul. “Catherine, go and get the farmer,” I ordered her, taking Charlie’s hand from hers. He was still unsteady on his feet, especially when hungry and tired – both of which he was at the present moment.

The farmer came, and he and his son took the haul from us. “Here’s yer wages, Jenny,” he said to me, pressing the money into my hand. “Jill’s got a shepherd’s pie for yous, and Alexander here is gonna drive you and the bairns home. It’s been a long day and I saw Hendry make off with the motor.”

“Thanks, Sandy,” I murmured, almost ashamed that he felt such kindness was necessary. Though it was a massive help and it was much appreciated, it still was failure in my eyes that I could not do everything for myself and my children, with or without Hendry’s help or hindrance.
