#like…. ok…. well i’m a grown up too and if there’s a puddle it’s nice if someone says watch the puddle
Tumblr media
this is a g*yl*r comment that kinda makes sense out of context - and, trust, they’re not my vice but some of the tayvis people are ABSOLUTELY going buckwild over gender in very depressing ways all the time - but the behavior in question is that travis (a professional football player) was watching football on his phone at the US open and some commenter was like “i can’t believe both taylor and i have to put up with this 😂”…. i feel like this is a pretty harmless thing to joke about putting up with and that while it’s possible said commenter is with some guy who emotionally neglects her to hide in his mancave during football season “putting up with” your partner’s little Things (which again in this case is not actually travis’s hobby it’s his literal job) is a gender neutral concept. for example my partner has to put up with me talking about the g*yl*r quotes i don’t bother to post here

The Chain Confesses While Your Hurt/Upset Part 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Masterlist
Part 1 Part 2
The third and final part of this instalment will include Sky, Twilight and Hyrule!
You know the drill, content under the cut!
Sky
Sky was on watch again and there was still some time before the sun was supposed to rise.
Strangely, he felt more awake than he knew he usually would.
It was unnerving and Sky didn’t know what to do with change or what it meant.
He sighed and let the sounds of the terrain cascade over him. The gentle whispers from the breeze shook the leaves and there was subtle calls from the wildlife through the night.
It was calming.
Sky couldn’t figure out why he was so tense.
He took another breath and look around his friends, all asleep and worn out from the day’s events. Even he could admit it was rather uneventful considering their circumstances, but he welcomed it.
As he glanced at each of his companions, he felt his gaze linger on you a little longer.
He knew he was smitten with you.
He knew that if you were to ask him- he’d give you his heart, soul, and everything in between. There was little he wouldn’t do for you and every time you so much as smiled at him, he would collapse into a warm puddle within himself.
But you weren’t smiling right now.
Actually the longer he stared, the more it looked like you were actually quite upset.
A nightmare?
Sky stood up and made his way over to you, trying his hardest to not step on the boys in the process.
It was only when he squatted by your side did you whimper and curl further into yourself.
Seeing as you weren’t awake just yet, it gave all the information Sky needed to make his decision.
He reached over and shook your shoulder violently and took a step back.
You jolted awake with a gasp and blinked your eyes a few times, taking in your surroundings. Sky waited for you to realize where you were before he reached forward again. “Hey. You ok?”
“Oh.” You took in a breath and sat up. “I... I think so.”
Sky sat down next to you and brushed your hair away from your shoulder and out of your eyes.
“Was it bad?” You ask him.
“You tell me.” Sky smiles a bit.
“I wasn’t thrashing around too much, was I?” You reiterate and look around the group. “I didn’t wake anyone up?”
“No, it was actually kind of hard to tell you were even having a nightmare.” Sky admits.
“Oh... ok, good, that’s probably the best case scenario.” You gulps and place your hand over your heart, taking long deep breaths to calm yourself down. “Thank goodness it was just a dream.”
“Was it bad?” Sky throws your question back at you.
You startle and look Sky in the eye, gripping your blankets with iron like strength. Sky takes a note.
“It...” You shake your head. “It could have been worst. It wasn’t even that scary. Just... disturbing...and sad. I’d rather not have those mental images again.”
“Anything I can do to help?”
“Um.... Can I join you?”
“Absolutely.” Sky stands up and gives you his hand. You take it without hesitation and let him lift you onto your feet. Silently, you follow him back to the watch log and take a sit next to him. You’re still a little shaken by what you’ve seen in your own mind and you don’t mind taking a moment to digest and process it.
Sky for his part is staring to feel a little silly. He wants to spend more time with you, yes, but now what? And how does he not make a fool of himself now that he’s actually spending time alone with you?
A part of him is starting to catastrophize, thinking of all the ways he can do something stupid and completely ruin his reputation. For all he knows he’s going to trip (even if he’s sitting right now) and fall right into the fire. You’d laugh at him- never take him seriously again and then he’d really never have a chance with you.
He knows it’s illogical and it’s actually not the worst thing that can happen- but his nerves at getting to him and it’s making him question everything.
“Sky, can I ask you something?” You say after a tense moment of silence.
“Sure.” Sky’s voice cracks. He coughs a little to clear his throat and tries again. “Yeah, anything. Go ahead.”
“Why do I make you so nervous?” You say.
Suddenly Sky feels like he’s been punched in the heart. For all the wrong reasons.
Your voice is quiet and resigned... your sad and you don’t look at him. “Do I scare you or something? Is there something about me that you don’t trust? Did I do something wrong?”
“No, no, no, not at all.” Sky rushes to quell your fear, even if he’s starting to panic.
“Then what?” You sigh and pull your knees up. “Did I make you upset? I know you don’t like confrontation but I don’t know why you’ve been getting worse... If it was something I did, you can tell me, I’m grown, I can take it, what did I do wrong?”
“You did nothing wrong.”
“Well, I’ve had to have done something.” You snap. “You always try to end the conversation early and leave. You don’t like spending time with me, and you almost never answer my questions with a full sentence. You can never look me in the eye and have to wonder what on earth goes through your head if you don’t even want to stand next to me. Sometimes I think you’re just nice to me because you’re a good person but I don’t think you like me very much.”
Sky gulps heavily and begins weighing his options.
“I think you know that I like you.” You mutter.
Wait. WHAT?
“Is that what the problem is?” Your voice jumps a little on the last word and it sounds like you’re going to cry. “Was I too obvious? Did I make you uncomfortable? God, I’m sorry. I can pull back. I’m pretty sure you have a girlfriend anyway.. right? That Zelda? I mean, your Zelda? You’re together, aren’t you? I’m so stupid. Of course you’re together, what on earth was I thinking?”
“We’re not.” Sky jumps in his seat and twists his body to face you head on. “You’re wrong. You’re so wrong. I don’t have a girlfriend.”
Sky reaches over and grabs your shoulders, twisting you around as well so that you’d look at him.
You look away regardless and scoff. “You’re a catch. I doubt that you’re single.”
“I.. Am very flattered but you’re still wrong.” Sky laughs a little incredulously. He can’t believe this. Is this really happening? “Believe it or not I am very single.”
“Oh.” You sniff and reach up to pinch your eyes together, trying to subtly wipe away the tears neither of you have mentioned. “I’m sorry I’m a mess. I can leave you alone if you want.”
“That’s the last thing I want.” Sky blurts and belatedly realizes that he said that out loud.
“Then what? What is it? Work with me Link, because I’m not a mind reader.” You sit a little taller and finally look at him. “What do I have to do so that you’re comfortable around me? I don’t like the feeling of there being some....kind of mine field that I’m left dancing around. I really don’t want to see it blow up on either of us.”
“There’s nothing you can do.” Sky gulps. “It has nothing to do with you. I’m the problem.”
“That’s always the answer isn’t it.” You scoff again and unfurl yourself, turning away from him. “The ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ scenario.”
“It’s because... I-” Sky bites his lip and cups your cheek experimentally, putting just enough pressure to guide your face back to him but letting you fight him if you so desired.
You don’t and you let face be held by him for a moment.
“I love you.” Sky says to you, trying to hold eye contact and will the truth into your head. “I’ve been in love with you for a while now. I’m sorry I’ve been such a mess. I never wanted you to feel unwanted or give off the impression that it was anything less.”
You stare at him, eyes growing comically wide.
Sky gulps at the lack of verbal reaction and tries to laugh to lighten the mood. It doesn’t work but he tries. “I uh- haha- didn’t do a very good job at hiding it, I guess.”
“Oh my god, I’ve read all the signs backwards.” You whisper.
Sky snorts and leans into your direction. “You can say that, yeah.”
“I’m so stupid.”
“You are not stupid.” He growls. “Stop calling yourself that. I’ll fight you over it.”
“And don’t want that, do I?”
“No. No you do not.”
“Ok.” You break into a grin and laugh after a second, running your hands through your hair. “Are you serious? You like me? Me? The most boring person here?”
“We’re going to have a have a long talk about this and why you can’t keep putting yourself down.” Sky frowns. “You are not stupid and you are not boring. You are intelligent and thoughtful and kind and amazing and like no one I’ve ever met. I bet I could search for a million years and I’ll never come across someone quite like you.”
“You’re going to make me cry.”
“I’ll be here to dry your tears. It’s ok.” Sky grins and places both of his palms against your cheeks.
“I love you.” You blurt and place your hand over his, turning into it to hide your blushing face behind them.
“And I love you.” Sky leans in some more and places a kiss against your forehead.
“Can I stay up with you a little more?”
“Please.”
Twilight
The postman ran into the group, almost bowling them over with an urgent letter held high. He asks if there’s any one in your group with your name and Twilight sees the despair collide onto your face.
You raise your hand and slowly take the letter away from him. You thank him with a tense and fake smile out of politeness and watch as he leaves.
You’re scared to open the letter and Twilight belatedly remembers the trouble you’ve mentioned that’s been brewing during your absence.
Twilight frowns as he watches you read the letter, each sentence apparently worse than the last.
He sees you shut down and put your walls up from the rest of the group.
Your whole demeanor changes and you don’t even finish reading the letter. The contents upset you so much that you fold it in half again and shove it in your pocket.
“Let’s go.”
Wind bite his lip. “Are you o-”
“I don’t want to talk about it.” You snap and head off in the direction they were going in before they paused for you to get your mail. Your steps are fast and determined, light and flighty, like you’re seconds from running or breaking out in a sprint but don’t want to make a scene.
The group exchanges multiple glances and hesitantly follow you, no one saying a word about what happened or what they think the letter said.
Twilight can guess though.
A while ago a similar letter arrived for you that also held bad news. It threw you into a funk for a few days and it took all of their combined efforts to distract you and help you feel better. It had seemed that there was some trouble back home that you could do nothing about.
He figures that this letter was sent to tell you it got worse.
With a sigh he marches on and waits.
Twilight waits until nightfall.
The others have taken the subconscious decision to leave you alone and wait until you’re a little more sorted out. The younger ones seem to be under the impression that you’re angry- and maybe you are- and they don’t want to risk having your wrath pointed in their direction.
But Twilight has seen enough to know your look.
Time knows it.
Warrior knows it too
And maybe if he studies for long enough, he would see Wild figure out the look as well.
You’re ready to rain absolute hell fire but you can’t.
It upsets you and he tempted to think your fury is more out of sadness than any actual rage.
When it’s his turn to take watch and he’s sure that Four has fallen asleep again, he makes his way over to you and studies you for a moment.
He places a hand on your shoulder and shakes you lightly. “I know you’re not actually asleep.”
“Buzz off Twi.”
“Want to walk it off?” He offers. “I still have to check the perimeter. Some company would be nice.”
You sigh and let your arm fall off of your face to look in the eye. you stare at him for a moment and Twilight tries to ignore the budding bullets of sweat that begin to down his back. “...Sure.”
He smiles a bit, for your sake, because it hurts him to see you so upset still. Twilight extends his arm out for you to take and you slip your hands into his. He lifts you up with practiced ease and together to begin to walk out of the camp and around what they’ve set up as their perimeter.
Usually Twilight would take his wolf form and do the job this way but that probably would have tipped your hand since you weren’t asleep to begin with.
“Let me guess.” You start once you’re far enough away. “You want to ask me what the letter was about. Get me to spill my heart out and tell you all my secrets and help me feel better.”
“I’d want to help you feel better regardless if you told what was in the letter or not. You don’t have to tell me anything.” Twilight admits with a slight blush on his face. “But movement always helps me think. Or if you want to think about something else for a little bit instead of the letter, we could just talk about other stuff too... Whatever you need... I want you to know that I’m here for you.”
You take a long breath from your nose and let it slowly out your mouth. “I know... I know that Link. I’m sorry.”
He’s never heard you say his name before.
Twilight doesn’t know if he hates it or not.
I mean, he’d gladly hear you say his name, don’t get me wrong...
But in that tone? With that level of... resignation? Despair?
You sound like you’re about to cry.
“It’s just...” You start and stop in the middle of the trail. You press the heel of your palm harshly into your eyes- maybe you really are about to cry. “My grandma is dying.”
Oh.
“She dying, Link and I’m not there. I thought she was just sick and it would only be a matter of time until she was back on her feet but she’s not getting any better. And to make stupid matters worse....You see... between me and my grandma, we take care of Zelda, she’s my cousin, and my little brother. My dad works and sends us money but he’s never home and my mom’s not around anymore and I don’t know what to do.”
Twilight places a hand on your shoulder, rubbing experimental circles on your back for a second. When you don’t push him away he slides into your personal space and hugs you, squeezing you tightly until you let go of the stress that’s no doubt building inside of you.
You hug him back just as hard and it surprises him for a moment. “I couldn’t even finish that stupid letter. It said that... We can’t... My dad can’t come home yet and god, Twi, they’re just kids. They can’t be left alone. Link is five and Zelda is seven. There’s no one who’s going to take care of them. They’re going to take them away. They’re going to take my little brother away.”
Twilight bites his lip and can feel himself understanding the situation a little more. Kinda. Maybe. Ok no. Not really. He wants to say that someone else from your hometown can pitch in and help. That they should have been helping from the get go. It’s how it works in Ordon and it sounds like the others would be in similar boats if this was their family but from what he’s gathered your Hyrule is very different.
He doesn’t know how things work in your Hyrule and he doesn’t know who this ‘they’ is but he can guess that’s it someone (or some people) with more power than you do, especially since you’re not home right now.
He can hear it in your tone.
“Is there anything I can do to help?” He asks instead. He doubts it but god! How he hates to see you in pain!
“Not unless we somehow end up in my world and we bring them with us.” You wince and hide your face in his neck. “They’re just kids Link. I... I don’t think  I’m even old enough to fight for them. They’re going to say I’m too young and that I don’t have a job... even if it’s my dad who’s been paying for all of us...I hate their stupid politics and political junction and they just want to rip away what they don’t have.”
“Who’s taking care of them right now?” Twilight cradles your head with his hand, keeping his arm tightly wrapped around your waist. “Who’s taking care of your grandma?”
“The neighbors, I think.” You sniff. “But it’s already putting a strain on them. They’re not going to hold out much longer. I won’t even be able to say goodbye to my grandma. God, this is such a mess.”
“I’m sure we’ll get the chance to fix this- there’s no way this would just happen. We’d help you. We’d all pitch in. If it does happen that we need to take them, we will. We’ll find a safe space for them. Maybe Time will lend the Ranch, I know they’d be welcome in my village and Wild’s too, maybe. You’re not alone in this, ok?”
“Would you really do that?” You tilt your head up. He nods and you nearly tear up again. “Thank you.”
“Of course.” Twilight gulps and grips your tight once again. I love you, he thinks, would I even need a reason to help you?
Your grip tightens on him in return and Twilight takes a moment to try and calm his heart. “We should try to contact your dad and see if there’s any way for him to do anything-”
“Oh my god he’s going to kill me.”
“Why?”
“...”
“...”
“... He may or may not know that I’m here.”
Twilight tenses and nearly groans. “Do I even want to know why?”
“In my defense, I told my grandma. My dad... doesn’t really care about me anyway. He doesn’t really care for my brother anyway. Zelda is his favorite. It’s why she’s with us. But I am supposed to be there to help grandma... not out here... saving the world.”
Twilight sighs and shakes his head fondly. “We’ll figure something out. I promise.”
He’d take care of your family in a heartbeat if you’d let him. Twilight takes a breath. He loves you so much- if could fight all your problems away he would.
“I believe you.”
“Yeah,” Twilight lets you go and  begins to guide you back through the forest trail. “We should get going, the perimeter isn’t going to check itself.”
“What? Link wait.” You grab his bicep and pull yourself closer again. “Do you mean it?”
“Of course I do.” He smiles. “We’d all help. I know it. You don’t have to worry too much about it.”
“No I... Yes, that. Thank you but that wasn’t what I was talking about.” You shake your head and wait or him to answer, trying to will into his head what it was that you were referencing.
Twilight thinks for a moment and tilts his head. “About the ranch or my village? Malon might have her hands full if she’s willing to watch them for us but there’s plenty for them to do there. And my village has a soft spot for foundlings anyway. I’m sure they’d be overjoyed to have young children playing around again. Wild’s house in Hateno has kids their age too, so it’s another good place for them, and they’d already have the house open for them.”
“No, no, not that either.” You gulp. “A bit... a bit after that...”
“About contacting your dad?”
“No- not...” You blush deeply and begin to nervously shuffle on your feet.
It’s weird because Twilight can’t think of anything that he said that would have that reaction.
“You said you loved me.” You say in a small voice.
Twilight then pales to hard that he’s not sure how he manages to stay on his feet. He’s almost certain he can feel the moment where his soul leaves his body.
“That you’d take care of my family, that you’d fight my problems...” You continue without knowledge of the bomb you’ve just dropped. “Do you mean it? Or am I looking too much into it? Because I’ve always thought you might have had a thing for me and but I didn’t want to be the one to read the situation wrong but if you’re saying out loud-”
“I wasn’t supposed to say that out loud.”
Twilight voice does not crack when he says this.
“Oh... um..” You bite your lip. “Is it-? Am I wrong then? Did you not say that? I thought- Well, I wanted... I do like you, so I had hoped.... But if you’re not-”
“No, I do! I am! I-! URRGGHH-!” Twilight cuts himself off and ruffles his hair furiously with both of his hands. “This isn’t how I wanted you to find out. This is probably to lamest way you could have found out.”
He hides his face in his hands and doesn’t look up when he hears you quietly giggle. “Do you mean it though?”
“Yes.” He doesn’t look up.
He hears you approach him and refuses to meet you in the eye. He doesn’t look at you even when you gently take his hands and pull them away from his face. Even when you caress his cheek and steer him to the side. His eyes do however nearly bulge out of his head when he feels your lips on his cheek.
“I love you too then.” You smile.
“I didn’t want to lose my cool.”
“Can’t lose what you never had.” You snort and move his hair away from his forehead, admiring the blush on his cheeks and ears. “I’ll go back to camp. You finish checking up on the perimeter.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah... I should be asleep anyway.”
“Ok... Goodnight then.”
“Goodnight Link and thank you. I feel better now.”
“I’m glad.”
Hyrule
“I bet you ten rupees that you can’t make that jump.”
“I say twenty that I can.”
“Oh yeah? Prove it then.”
Hyrule smirks and takes a few steps back, letting his gaze drift just beyond the chasm and toward his target. “I’m about to be twenty rupees richer.”
“Just don’t injure yourself.” You cross your arms. “I don’t have the patience to deal with Legend’s smothering when he finds out I challenged you.”
“He’d be smothering me, not you.” He snorts.
“Yeah, but you’ll be fine.” You deadpan. “It’s not even that deep. Besides he’ll blame me for it no matter how badly you get hurt.”
“I’ll try to land safely then.”
“Not a single bruise!”
“For your sake.”
“Thank you.” You put your weight onto one foot, shifting your hip outward to watch as Hyrule takes a running start. “Don’t die.”
“I love your vote of confidence.” Hyrule snorts and leaps at the last second off of the ledge.
He jumps higher than you would have imagined him to be capable of and it stuns you completely. Hyrule for his part, lands on the other side, unharmed and on both of his feet.
He turns around with a large grin on his face and places his hands on his hips as he looks you in the eye. There’s the slight smell of magic in the air but you don’t question or notice it. “Your turn.”
Your jaw drops. “I am not doing that.”
“Come on. It’s not so bad.” He laughs and smirks at your disbelief. “I’ll call off the bet if you can make it. You know what, instead, let’s double it.”
“I can’t make that.” You screech. “You’re crazy!”
Hyrule snorts. “You’re scared~!”
“I’m not scared!”
“Scaredy cat! Scaredy cat!”
“Fine! I’ll do it!” You pout and take the few steps to the side where he took his running start. You take a breath and try to set up the same process that he did.
With your running start, you leap a little later than Hyrule did, because there’s no way you can jump as high as he did, and you can see how this is going to end.
You’re not going to make it.
Hyrule sees it too and tries to make a mad dash to the ledge with his hand out to grab you.
Your fingertips brush against each other and Hyrule jumps at the last second to grasp your hand...
He misses.
You fall.
“NOO!” Hyrule’s voice rips through his throat and he falls right onto his chest by the ledge in some desperate attempt to catch you but it’s no use. He sees you crash into the wall, a sickening crack coming from your body and you fall down. Your knees bend as your feet make purchase on the dirt but inevitably slip and it only curls you into a ball, rolling you backwards until you eventually hit the bottom of the relatively shallow ravine.
And by shallow, I mean it’s more or less a twenty foot drop.
Survivable?
Absolutely.
Will you come out unharmed?
Well...
“I’m so dead.” Hyrule mutters to himself and gets to his feet. He dashes along the edge, trying to find a point where he can jump down safety and get back to you. It takes a total of five minute for him to find a quasi decent spot. It’s a half baked idea and he knows it but he jumped down the lesser distance and runs back in the direction he came.
You’re getting up slowly by the time he reaches you and he forces himself to go a little faster.
“I think I figured you out, you cheater.” You groan when you look up and see him. “You used your magic to make that jump.”
“Uhh...”
“What on earth made you think that I was going to do the same?”
“I over shot it? So you should have been fine?” Hyrule chuckles nervously and reaches over to brush your hair out of your face.
Blood is absolutely pouring down your face and it looks as if you have a broken nose.
“Link, I’m going to punch you.” You groan and place your hands by your nose.
“No, wait, hold on-” Hyrule gulps and places his hands on your wrists, trying to stop you.
In one fluid motion to pop your nose back onto place and sigh of relief.
Hyrule’s eye widen and he’s both horrified and impressed.
“What?” You snap.
“I’m in love with you.”
“What?” You say again.
Hyrule’s hands fly over his mouth. “Nothing. I said nothing! You’re hearing things. Let me just- umm...”
You send his healing spell over in your direction and lets it go permeate through the space.
“Link.”
He looks away from you.
“What is wrong with you?” You furrow your eyebrows. “Don’t say something like that unless you mean it.”
Hyrule gulps and bite his lip. Because he means it.
“We don’t have to talk about this.” You sigh and let him heal you.
Hyrule doesn’t respond and focuses on letting the spell fall against your nose and your back.
“Rulie?” You blink and finally look at his face. “How much trouble do you think we’ll be in if we get caught? Legend will probably have both of our heads if he finds out about it.”
A moment of silence passes.
“I don’t think Time will do much about it and Twilight doesn’t have the pull he thinks he has in the group.” You continue when he doesn’t reply, nervously shifting in your spot as Hyrule works. “Warrior will probably keep on a tighter leash than usual though.”
He doesn’t say anything, letting the spell fall. Hyrule feels a little drained after using as much magic has he already has but he can’t help but feeling a little miffed.
“Link, please say something.”
“I meant it.” He’s barely able to hold back the scowl because he knows he’s not that impressive and you’re so amazing that there’s not way in this green earth that you’re not already taken. So of course, you’d just assume that he’s being fresh and brush him off.
“What?”
“I meant it.” He looks your way. “I wasn’t joking.”
“Uhhh..”
Hyrule huffs a bit when he see that you don’t understand him yet. “I’ve been in love with you for a while now.”
You still and he can see you gulp slightly. “Oh.”
Hyrule feels like a child and he leans away from you, falling onto his back. “Anything still hurt?”
“Um... No...” You shift your weight again and grip your wrist. “I feel a lot better now. Thank you.”
“Good.” Hyrule stands and reach out for you to take his hand. “We should head back to the others.”
“Hyrule.”
“They’re going to start getting worried about us.”
“Link.”
“What?”
“I’m sorry.” You bite your lip and and stop him from going any further. “Are you serious? Did you mean it mean it? Because I didn’t want to discredit-”
He sighs and grips your hand a little tighter and brings it up to his lips. Hyrule places a delicate feather like kiss on your knuckles and lowers it just enough to study your hand in his. “It’s fine. I doubt your partner would appreciate it anyway if I were to just-”
“I don’t have a partner...” You gulp and grip his tighter in reply. “I’m not in a relationship. I didn’t... I’m not trying to-”
“Forget it.” He smiles a little falsely. “Like you said, we don’t need to talk about it.”
“Oh.... Oh Link...” You frown and step into his personal space, placing both of your hand on his shoulders.
“I don’t need your pity. It’s fine.” He rolls his eyes and tries to pull away from you.
“No, please, not like this...” You stop him and hug him tightly. “I love you too! I panicked when you said that! Don’t- don’t shut me out! Please.”
“What happened to not saying that unless you mean it?”
“Liiinnkk...” You groan and place your face into the crook his neck.
Hyrule doesn’t deny how nice it feels to have you hold him. Slowly, he raises his arms to wrap them around you as well. You’re warm and your heart beat is strong even with your layers and armor. He takes a breath and is assaulted by your smell. It strangely reminds him of vanilla and cinnamon with freshly churned dirt and morning dew thrown into the mix. An odd combination but he finds that it’s pleasant.
“God, I’m sorry. Is that what you want to hear? I didn’t mean it. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. I panicked. I swear I panicked.” You nuzzle into him and he won’t deny the way his heart flutters as you do so.
“Calm down. It’s ok.”
“It really isn’t!”
“It is because I say so.” Hyrule snorts and rests his head against yours.
“Do you really think the others are looking for us?”
“Maybe. But I don’t think we actually have to go back just yet.”
“Then stay here? With me?”
“Yes.” Hyrule sighs of contentment and begins to sway with you back and forth. “I’d love nothing more.”

Hybrid!AU Kirishima Eijirou HCs
Tumblr media
× i mentioned him as a dog hybrid and we're sticking with it because it just feels right, yano? anyway!
× you found out about how the new hybrid shelter in your city helped bust a fighting ring
× which was horrifying to think about
× one of your friends explained the process to you and you were definitely interested in helping someone out
× shelters were still underfunded and didn't provide much to help the hybrids adapt to society
× so you found yourself in front of the shelter without a plan
× just a dream and a spare couch that could thankfully convert into a bed
× before you could chicken out you stormed through the doors like a mad person, catching the attention of the guards and the front desk man
× it surprised you how disinterested they were though; were they seriously the people that dismantled a whole illegal fighting ring?
× they called a sweet old lady to accompany you
× when you explained your situation her eyes sparkled, looking you up and down and nodding her head
× she took you through some hallways, showing you around the precinct, questioning you about what type of hybrid you'd want
× to which you honestly didn't know how to respond, like anyone you could help????
× it kinda pissed you off how she spoke about the hybrids like they were pets, suggesting you'd get a kitty or a bunny, since [her words] they were low maintenance
× is this really a good shelter?
× you looked around, finding prison like cells left and right, some with people that looked at you curiously, some covering from your glance
× they were locked in...
× some growling could be heard far away but the woman shook her head at you, disapproving gaze turned to the side as she took you further into the building
× another room, this time cells were bigger, a few occupied, yet covered from you, indiferent and uninterested
× a man was sitting on the edge of the bed, hands in his hair
× "Kirishima, boy, get up to greet someone"
× his red eyes snapped up, whatever he was thinking about slowly forgotten
× he blinked curiously as you hugged your frame, feeling uncomfortable, even ashamed to be there
× but a sweet smile took over his features
× "Hey! I'm Kirishima Eijirou!"
× it's really all it took for you to grow fond of him; he got up and came closer to the entrance of the cell and introduced himself in such easy-going manner you forgot about everything and anything
× he calmed you with his presence, even if it was very disheveled, with old ripped clothes and hair messy, painted red with obvious dark roots showing
× he had a black fluffy tail waving slowly behind him too
× you introduce yourself with his encouragement and mumbled how you wanted to help someone out today
× he just smiled at you, taking you in
× let me tell you something about dog hybrids: they can sense emotions and intentions so Kiri would be a very good judge of character and he really, genuinely took a liking on you
× the problem is how the fuck do you say out loud that you wanted to help him out
× because you sure as hell weren't going to say you'd adopt him; he's not a child? we're talking about a grown ass man here? literally looked like 6'4ft/1.95m?????
× it was so shameful, your gut turned as you cursed society and he sensed it, expression changing, falling a little as he saw you look very out of place
× "Hey, hey, everything's gonna be fine!" he said
× he told YOU that
× instead of YOU telling HIM those words;;; you almost burst into ugly crying, forgetting about everything else, your minuscule problems or shame or whatever and just nodded at him
× "Would you like to come home with me, Kirishima?" you said, ignoring the happy clapping the old lady was doing, watching carefully how his expression, clear as water, switched from easy-going and reassuring to shocked then hopeful
× "I'd like that" he breathed out "—a lot."
× as you went out the lady was telling him it was a shame they separated his group of friends, something about being sent to different shelters, how he had to be a good boy, to behave, yada-yada and seriously;;; he was taking it so lightheartedly, as if he was so used to this behavior or even was thankful for it?
× it was starting to get annoying, specially when they gave you a collar for him, like no fucking thanks, but you'd take care of it later
× since it was very random and unplanned, you were making mental gymnastics to figure out what to get and what to do first, like clothes, food—
× journey home was pleasant as he walked close to you, asking you questions about yourself with a gentle smile on his features
× meanwhile people got out of both your ways because he was intimidating and big and large but his smile screamed sunshine
× all while he never really mentioned anything about himself
× you made a point to ask him if he was hungry, to grab a quick bite at any restaurant you could get at then go buy some clothes and necessities
× you were so casual and this guy was so shocked
× i swear, looks at you blinking stupidly then ✨beams✨
× spoiler alert; big boy was hungry
× it didn't matter honestly, just seeing him eat without a worry [even if everyone at the restaurant was wary of him but got a stink eye from you] was a relief
× since you answered his questions about you, you decided to ask some about him; you were going to be roomies soon so might as well get to know each other
× shocked again
× stops mid-bite when you ask him something and stares wide-eyed
× doesn't answer but you can see he wants to and you're confused??
× "did I—... did I say something wrong?" you'd press, scared you'd spook him away or something
× he just gulps down and looks ashamed
× casually tells you they've been told at the shelter owners don't care about them
× 🙃 say what now bby?
× he kinda starts apologizing because he understands why you wouldn't wanna know and you put your hand on his; kinda mutes him for a second
× "Kirishima, we're gonna live together and hopefully be friends in the process, right? I'd like to know about you, as much as you're willing to tell me"
× [ falls in love right then and there ]
× he's met humans before, many actually—
× even in the short weeks he's been at the shelter he's seen people come and go and none talked to him like you did
× stares with stars in his eyes and chuckles awkwardly, blush on his face
× "You're really nice, [Y/N]" he said before eagerly answering your questions; course, it leaves you confused lmfao but you brush past it
× okay! shopping next, long story short it was very hard to find hybrid clothes for his size so you pick to change human clothes and adjust them for him
× as you again mention this stuff casually he's just awestruck
× when you got home, bags in hand, you were explaining to him how you really didn't have much; you were working to get a promotion soon but for now you had a couch that could open up into a very comfy bed, which he assured you it was enough
× you were lowkey unsure if he fit it because like i mentioned, big boi is big
× he does! so that's a relief but you started considering giving him your bed; you mostly fell asleep on the couch anyway and to be fair, it was really comfortable and you mention it as he looks around
× his head snaps at you, wide eyed, yet does not talk
× so you ramble bc that's something fun to do! "I mean I went to the shelter without a plan and uh, I want you to feel as comfortable as possible and maybe the bed is a better fit and—"
× Kirishima Eijirou sees: 💕💞💕💞💕💞💕
× has never been treated like this, like he's an... equal... something he'll take months to share with you, but we're getting ahead of ourselves
× the thing is this boy will fall pretty hard pretty fast, but will definitely take time to make a move
× bc he is respectful
× so he thanks you for the offer and tells you it's probably the best place he slept in all his life
× can your heart stop breaking for him? i mean it's a good couch but it's no luxury hotel bed???
× [ we need to pause, OP made herself sad ]
× ok, so he's really helpful around the house, and he knows how to cook!
× takes no time to talk about his friends, special his best friend that cooked for everyone at the fighting ring and forced them all to help and that's how he was pretty decent at cooking himself
× wasn't the best though, but followed instructions like a boss
× he lives for your compliments
× literally his tail wiggles with no shame
× seriously;; tell him he did a good job even at the dumbest thing and—
× puffs chest
× wiggle-wiggle
× "Thanks!"
× 🥺💕💞 make him stop, he's so cute
× did i mention he has like floppy black ears? Omg his earsssssssssshnnngggggggggg
× because they move whenever he walks and they're mesmerizing
× and one day that you're observing them for science [not because your heart was like 💘pom-pom💘] you noticed his roots
× remember when your heart broke for him? hah, have some more because as you asked him, he started telling you that he was pushed into dying his hair red for the spectacle, diversity and what-not
× reassured you he grew to love it now, being part of who he is
× also gets a little bit shy when adding he wouldn't want to change the color in hopes of finding his friends someday and for him to be easily recognizable
× you bought him hair dye that same day
× WHICH! apart from gaining extra 🥺💕💞 from him, it created a nice routine between you two!!
× you offered to dye his hair and it was such a great time; he made you laugh, conversation going just as easy whenever you talked, you got to know each other a little bit more and—
× heh
× at the end, after applying all the red hair dye, you massaged his scalp gently
× guess who melts in your hands? yes, giant ass dog-man melts into a puddle under your hands and it's the cutest fucking thing you've ever seen
× I'm serious, he sighs and leans into your gloved hands with zero [0] shame, eyes closed and peaceful expression on his features apart from a small smile
× you tease him and he laughs it off, but promise him you'd give him head scratches when he was finished with the dye, washed off and hair dry
× and you better deliver
× "Don't think I forgot!" he'd say as he'd hop on his make-shift bed in the living room by your side, tail moving from side to side
× as you start playing with his locks, he falls into your lap and starts snoring
× move an inch and he opens his eyes to look at you confused
× puppy eyes questioning you if you're leaving 🥺
× yep, you fall asleep together
× you point out to yourself that those puppy eyes will be the death of you
× he's a touchy guy, okay? since he's been touchy with you from the very start you never questioned it, even read on the internet that many hybrids descended from house pets need physical affection, like hugs, pats, scratches, all the bag, so it wasn't a big deal for you
× except it was a big deal because he's been around for a month and you're already catching feelings and that's bad because you did not bring him there to fall for him but to help him start a new life and—
× oh my god, what if he thought you were one of those people from the horror stories about hybrid adoption that only wanted them for one thing—
× no, no, no, nO, NO.
× anxiety was getting to you as the guilt of catching feelings for him, plus the fact that he was financially dependant on you for the time which would've made it even worse if he found out, PLUS he comes from such a rough life, he definitely needs a break and doesn't need his first human friend in forever to be a piece of;;;
× Kiri catches on this really constant and increasing feeling of anxiety; he starts to send you worried glances but doesn't know how to proceed
× in such a soft voice he asks if you're okay, if something is on your mind
× and since you weren't sharing anything but acted as if everything was alright even when he felt you lied, Kiri started to get worried too
× why were you anxious? why weren't you talking to him about it?
× oh, god, was he a burden? because he felt like one;;; did you want him out? he felt like an extra weight for you and wanted to do something about it but maybe you got sick of him? he felt unmanly...
× the fact that he knew he cared about you as more than just a friend made him even more anxious and it didn't help that whenever he touched you he heard your breath hitch or your heart beating louder; he got his hopes up then down because
× you smelled like people; people he didn't know, people he wanted to know because he needed to know why did you smell like them? were they a treat? were they potential partners? he really did not want to ask bc Kirishima felt like it wasn't his place to know
× as tension grew in the house you decided to gift him a new phone, ready to give him some news that reached your ears
× it seems Kiri himself liked to do sports and mainly jog to keep himself active and he's started to pass by the local dog-park to play with the dogs
× imagine your surprise when a few neighbors asked you if he'd be willing to train their dogs bc he's been teaching them stuff like once a week and the dogs listened
× big time dog whisperer; he says "Sit" to one dog and all dogs in the neighborhood sit too, you get me?
× so you said it would be nice for him to have his own money; not like you didn't help him without care, but you saw his face every time you bought something for him and really felt like he needed some real independence
× he's in ✨awe✨ because you came up with clients already that were very eager for dog training sessions, which he loved??? and suggested hours, wages??????
× and you gave him this new phone to help him with it if he's interested too?
× "Well, the normal price on the internet around the area is—"
× "[Y/N]."
× "Hmm?"
× "You're really amazing, you know that, right?" he'd have his lips curled into a sweet smile
× which makes your heart go crazy and this man notices how you get flustered
× loves it
× get ready for compliments; a lot of compliments just expecting your sweet flustered reactions
× he's slow at realizing your feelings for him because he beats himself down and seems himself as less of a man but tests the waters nonetheless and a d o r e s every time you struggle to thank him for said compliments and don't know how to continue functioning
× catches on and gets his hopes up
× and so you do
× listen, this is hilarious because you're both dumb idiots and want to be respectful towards the other meanwhile he hugs you tighter and for a little bit too long, loving how you melt into him, kisses you on the cheek and sees you get all flustered, looks at you like you're the only one to ever matter until you stop talking, turning everything into a giant mess of silence until you both grin at each other???? I'm getting second-hand embarrassment, just kiss???????
× and it happened with an accidental kiss
× you greeted him as he walked through the door, excited to tell him about your promotion, rambling about the take-out you ordered while he smiled at you
× and it started to be usual for you to greet him with a kiss on the cheek, right? just what normal roomies do, you know [mhmm~]
× he's taking his shoes off and knows the kiss is coming, but just before you press it on his cheek you whisper/squeal "I got the promotion!" to which he turns his head in surprise at you making your lips press together by accident [mhhhmmmmm~~~]
× cue both of you apologizing, looking like a mess
× he's blushing
× you both loved it
× why are you standing so close to each other?
× why did he lick his lips in daze while staring at yours?
× which one of you was leaning in for another kiss?
× it didn't really matter because he's kissing you slowly, taking you into his arms like you were made of porcelain
× glues his body to yours and breathes you in, lips locked, neither believing it was real
× lifts you up in his arms with no difficulty and smiles, both inches separated from another; "Congratulations..." his breath would fan over your face;;;;
× yeah, okay, he takes no time to confess, resulting in a mess of manly words skdjekldj you guys talked that whole night while cuddling and stealing kisses, you on his lap
× [ his nose brushing your neck; he loves your scent omg ]
× it becomes official pretty much instantly and then all your worries wash away
× all the anxiety, all the stress and overthinking, they've all been sorted out in one night and trust me, afterwards this man is pure honesty and loyalty
× he won't hesitate to talk to you about anything and will be such a patient sweetheart with you, listening to every word you say without judgment
× loves cheesy stuff? as in the most cliché stuff seen in movies? that's his shit right there; whenever you two see each other after some time apart [sometimes 5 minutes apart] he'd pick you in his arms and spin you around, then expect you to kiss him
× if you don't, i will skfjdkfk step aside 👀
× skin contact; please, touch him
× if you're not he sends you those famous puppy eyes and we all know they're killer
× sighs, happy to hold you tight against him, engulfing you into his big frame; yeah, you're where you belong, in his arms.
× everyone in the neighborhood loves him; it's ridiculous, seriously, because you find out he helped around all the time when you were at work and gained everyone's love
× makes an instagram account to teach people how to train their dog and becomes an internet sensation, a small celebrity
× also bc he's hot and sometimes posts working out pics
× skdksjs imagine this: makes dinner for both of you, lits up some candles, goes all in, then fucking posts it on ig saying "waiting for my baby to come home #surprise" forgetting you can see it lmfao
× you see the story on your way home and 🥺💞 "ye i love his oblivious ass"
× soft gasps when you tell him after dinner
× has the audacity to be surprised, like babe????
× Kaminari finds him through social media and this baby cries in relief for a good half an hour
× both team up to find all the gang
× guess who talks praises about you all the time? mhm, this guy right here is proud to have you
× and Denki has to deal with it;
× anywho! want to break him for good? tell him you love him for the first time
× GETS. SO. EXCITED. AND. EMOTIONAL.
× but forgets how to speak
× finds his words to say it back after staring at you entranced, grinning like an idiot, taking you in his arms and giving you a bone crushing hug while shaking in place
× he's never felt this loved and adores every second of it
× you're like a drug and he's deep gone, man
× tells you he loves you every single day

Majidad family headcanons..? 🥺👉👈
Say no more 💖 This is LONG so I've put it under the cut!
First off, how many children would Majima want? Frankly, the man’s so happy to be given the chance at fatherhood in the first place that even just one would send him over the moon... but he wouldn’t say no to more. He’s paid enough visits to Kiryu to feel that twinge in his heart, hearing the echo of so many cheery voices around the orphanage.
So, if it at all possible, he’d love to see his dream about having his own little cuddle puddle of kids become a reality. He’ll maybe slightly underestimate how difficult it’d be to take care of them all, but he’s Majima Goro, moulded by fate to be one tenacious bastard. He’ll pull through, somehow, with the help of a loving partner willing to go the distance with him. However, if he did only have one kid, you can bet they’d be spoiled absolutely rotten. You might think that the roles of good cop/bad cop would be obvious in a crazy yakuza dad+presumably civilian spouse couple, but think again, because Majima is a complete pushover when faced with cute puppy eyes.
Extra serving of ice cream after dinner? He'll pile gigantic scoops into his bowl and then give up not even halfway through, sliding it towards his child. He can't really wink, but they get the picture. “Who in ever is gonna finish this for me?” Five minutes more at the park? Sure thing, they can have the whole hour and maybe Kiryu-chan might show up in the meantime too so they can... schedule their next fight. No throwing down in front of the kid! I think also once Majima becomes a dad, his priorities shift. Slightly, but noticeably. He still upholds his vicious reputation, but he isn't living at the edge any more, fighting through each day like it's his last, defusing bombs with little regard for safety. If surviving up until now was luck more than anything, with a child in his life, he's going to make damn sure it becomes a certainty. He's got something so very precious to stay alive for.
When they're still very young, Majima would be a great help in comforting them during the night. He typically gets back at late hours anyway and relishes the chance to spend a bit of time with his child, instead of immediately collapsing into a restless sleep like he always used to. If they're awake or crying he'll comfort them as best as he can, even with his whispered voice now hoarser than he remembers it and no knowledge of lullabies... but hey, pop songs will do too. 24h Cinderella anyone? Though if they're sound asleep, he'll stick to just holding their tiny hand for a while, feel it clasp gently around his fingers...
First things first, the gloves come off, always. "Skinship" is a Japanese word put together from English that I think is great for describing the kind of parent-child intimacy he'd want. On mornings where can afford to sleep in, it wouldn't be uncommon for his spouse to find him on the couch, dozing on and off with the baby nestled on his chest. He's afraid of falling fully asleep and missing the tenderness of the moment, plus his nightmares are not something he'd ever want his child to know... So he'll stay like that, stroking their back and peeking through a lidded eye at his partner who's busy making breakfast. Also on this topic, an idea that occurred to me recently: you know how Majima's tattoo has one of the snakes' heads on the left side of his chest? Well... call him superstitious, but he'd only hold the baby on the right side. Can't have it threatening his sweet pea. 🥺️
What about once they get older? Well probably Majima would start waking up with unexpected “extensions” made this his tattoo, in black marker. Possibly some scribbles on his eye patch as well, which he’ll still proudly wear to work. And if you know what’s good for you, you really don’t want to be the one making fun of a Mad Dog that’s sporting a little heart doodle on his face. Kisses? Yes, absolutely. As we learn from Dead Souls, Majima would not shy away from smooching his child. A “good night” kiss, a “good morning” kiss, a “have a nice day” kiss when they’re off to school. One day the kid complains that his beard’s too scratchy and Majima doesn’t even think twice before he goes back to being clean-shaven.
I think at some point they would also have to be introduced to the domain they're going to be ruling (though only as children!): the Majima Family. Nishida would be promoted to “designated driver", for a kid all too eager to ride on someone's shoulders while daddy's away in a meeting and the Kamurocho Hills construction site would be getting a new foreman. Their duties would include drawing on the blueprints and shouting words of "encouragement" at the men through dad's loudspeaker, whenever he needs a break. Bet Majima even gets them a little hard hat and everything, custom-made! Ok so it also doesn't take long for them to figure out a fun game to play with the new family members, a hazing ritual basically: show up on the day of their first office duty and annoy the hell out of them. Men were nervous to begin with, but now they're confused and pissed, like who the hell is this brat and who let them in? Kid plays the silent card: doesn't say a word about their name or their dad's, just keeps running around and getting in their business.
After chasing a lightning-fast kid all around the whole office, Majima comes in and they think they're saved. Surely the boss has 0 tolerance for little intruders.... Though, of course, the intruder immediately runs to daddy and it slowly... very slowly dawns on them. Kid’s grinning from behind a leather-clad leg and the poor newbies have gone white in the face mentally counting how many fingers they're gonna have to give up. But it’s all fun and games... mostly. Of course a Majima descendant would inherit his mischievous nature.
But hey at some point, uncle Saejima comes back. Though Majima’s maybe a little reluctant at first, eventually he can’t but see the value of his kid training with his kyodai in the dojo. For self-defense, but also to develop their athleticism. Saejima’s of course happy to spend time with his niece or nephew, though... you know how in Y4 one of dojo's mechanics is that the students can just skip your lessons if they're not feeling motivated enough? Majima’s munchkin would absolutely do that. Slide underneath the big tiger’s legs and make a run for it!
I think Majima would find it terribly endearing if the child at some point started dropping Kansai words here and there. And that’s in spite of Saejima chiding him that his own accent is fake and that the kid probably picked it up from the “real source”, a.k.a Saejima himself. Heh, dad and uncle might bicker sometimes, but they both make it clear just how much they love the little one.
Now, raising a child as a high-profile yakuza is obviously not going to be all rainbows and sunshine... I think Majima would love nothing more than to indulge in the cozy fantasy of being an ideal father, spending all his waking moments playing with his kid, putting his energy and creativity to good use, just generally making sure his son or daughter get the best childhood he's never had... but it's a fantasy for a reason, because he's grounded enough in reality to know that it's not going to work out as idyllically as that.
He's fulfilled his and Saejima's dream of climbing the yakuza ranks, although it's come at the cost of being a notorious figure, with scars both external and internal. How is he going to protect his family? How much time is he really going to be able to dedicate to his kids? How is he going to keep them from walking the same dark path he has? Not a day passes where he doesn’t ask himself all those questions... doubly so on nights where he comes home to find that they’ve wiggled in his bed as well, cozy and safe in his partner’s arms. And it hits him that they’ve already grown up so much and he fears he’s missed out on so much, on making a positive impact in their life...
Ultimately, I don’t believe Majima would want his kids to grow up involved in the yakuza. Yet at the same time he can’t entirely hide his career. Maybe that’s a good thing because it teaches him that it's never as black and white as "if I leave, they'll be safe; if I stay, they'll die". One can raise a child to be strong and, above all, make their own decisions and carve their own path, even as a dad who's for all intents and purposes a criminal. The yakuza are, after all, a fact of everyday living, hidden in plain sight, given how pervasive they are in business and politics. A kid that's seen the flip side of the coin (within reason, because you bet Majima would still be fiercely protective of them) would surely be well equipped for life. It’s what he hopes, at least. If I thought the last ask was long...oh boy. I’d like to deeply thank all my friends off whom I’ve been bouncing these privately ideas for months now!! 💙💙💙 I didn’t think there’d be much interest in Majidad headcanons, but I’m happy to have been proven wrong!

32 "you were crying, are you OK?" America X Korea.
Warm, humid air hit Alfred’s face as he opened the door out onto the roof.
It was a beautiful night. The monsoon had graciously lifted earlier in the day, leaving the air warm, but not hot, and smelling sweetly of rain. The city glittered across the valley, nestled like a puddle of light between the hills. In the faint light on the rooftop, Alfred recognized Yong Soo leaning against the railing that surrounded the roof, gazing out over his country.
Previously, Yong Soo had mentioned stepping out to go to the bathroom, but it had been quite a while since then. A few floors below, the party and its guests continued on without them, all the guests drinking and laughing and enjoying the evening, but Alfred had grown antsy. After all, it was Yong Soo’s own party he was missing. So, he had gone to look for him, and had come to the roof after it became clear that Yong Soo hadn’t actually gone to the bathroom.
“Hey—” he started, about to ask Yong Soo what he was doing on the roof, but Yong Soo jumped, startled by the sudden voice, and though he was turned away, Alfred noticed him quickly wipe the back of his sleeve across his face.
Alfred approached the railing, leaning forward to rest his forearms against it. The view of the city truly was amazing. Thanks to the rain earlier in the day, the air was clean and clear. Bukhansan, or North Han Mountain, was visible in the distance, keeping silent watch over Seoul below.
“Nice night, isn’t it?” Alfred said casually, glancing over at Yong Soo, who seemed to be very careful about not making eye contact with him tonight.
“Yeah,” Yong Soo nodded in agreement, pretending the cough into his elbow, but Alfred had already noticed his puffy eyes and caught the slight stuffiness to his voice.
Frowning, Alfred cut to the chase. “You were crying. Are you okay?”
Yong Soo was silent for a moment, then let out a shaky sigh before raising his eyes to meet Alfred’s. “Am I that bad at hiding it?”
“Yes,” Alfred answered with a chuckle, sliding closer so that they were shoulder to shoulder. “Maybe it would fool someone else. But I know you too well.”
Yong Soo let out a little snort, then averted his eyes again.
“So...what’s wrong?” Alfred ventured, when it became clear Yong Soo wasn’t going to tell him unprompted.
“Oh, you know...the usual,” Yong Soo replied with a somber smile.
They both understood what “the usual” meant. It was, of course, no coincidence that Yong Soo had been looking out from the north side of the building’s roof.
“Did you leave him something again?” Alfred asked.
“Just some snacks and some soju,” Yong Soo said, referring to his yearly tradition of leaving a gift for his estranged brother on one of the conference tables in Panmunjom on their birthday, because rarely would the other actually come to meet him. “You know I can’t leave anything too personal—or ‘illicit.’ His soldiers will probably end up taking it anyway.”
His eyes fell to watch the cars and people bustling down the street below. He wiped his eyes again.
“I’m sorry. It’s supposed to be a happy day...” Yong Soo continued, his voice cracking despite his attempts to pull himself together. “You came all the way out here and now I’m just hiding from everyone on the roof.”
“Nah,” Alfred said, wrapping his arm around Yong Soo and pulling him close. “It just means I get to have you to myself for a while.”
“Yeah...” Yong Soo said, smiling weakly.
The silence hung uncomfortably between them for a moment.
“You know, I bet he’s out there on some rooftop looking south,” Alfred said, breaking the silence. “And next time there’s a UN conference, I’m gonna corner him so you can give him something more personal without his boss watching. I’ll guard the door. He’ll be mad at me but when is he not? At least you’ll get to talk and he can blame me for kidnapping him or whatever makes him feel better.”
The idea did coax a small chuckle out of Yong Soo. Alfred knew it wouldn’t make everything better, but it was the least he could offer. And making Yong Soo smile was a reward in itself.
“Thanks, Alfred,” Yong Soo said, wiping away a few more tears. “I would like that.”

“Can you just get in the damn car?”
Yoongi wasn’t exactly a patient person.
From the day that you met him in middle school-
Well really you had met him sometime in Primary school but you had both at some point agreed that the story you would tell people when they asked when you two had met was that you met in middle school.
That being because well... you guys hated each other.
Kind of.
Yoongi hated you and you... well you didn’t take well to being hated.
That being said, when you guys did end up becoming friends, it was Yoongi who had proposed it after years of what he put as “rivalry”.
He’d asked you to share a Sunday with him and you guys spent the whole afternoon talking.
One thing led to another and from then on you were inseparable.
“But look at the sky,” you said, pointing at the stars as they had begun to ebb away with the moon.
It was slightly purple and pink and a little orange.
The sun was still too low to be seen but it was painting the sky prettily.
“We can look at the stars some other time. We’re gonna be late.”
You rolled your eyes as a shiver went through your whole body.
It was your annual winter road trip and every year, without fail, you refused to bring a thick enough coat.
“Late to what? We don’t even have a destination dude.”
Maybe it was because you-
Pft.
You couldn’t even think of a good excuse for yourself anymore.
In all honesty-
Which is something you had started to do recently.
Honestly.
-you realized at some point on the last road trip that it was because you liked it much better when Yoongi groaned... then smiled... and gave you his.
“Late to the beginning.”
Ooooooookaaayyy?
Whatever what meant.
“Yoongi... are you sure that you got enough sleep?”
Yoongi shrugged.
“Probably. I slept from like three until six,” he said, as you ripped your eyes from the beautiful sky.
“That’s three hours,” you gaped through the rolled down window.
The car hummed softly. The warmth emanating from the engine transferred from the aura surrounding it into your bones.
But not your teeth.
They... were chattering something fierce.
“Yo-you’re fucking joking right?”
When he didn’t answer you made an ugly noise somewhere in the back of your throat and hit the roof of his-
1988 maroon thunderbird
(And don’t you forget it)
(...it’s his baby)
(It even has a name)
-car.
Yoongi’s hooded eyes shot wide open in surprise and what you knew to be anger because- well-
Let’s face it.
Yoongi has one facial expression and it’s usually somewhere between annoyed and indifferent.
He was the picture of a human grumpy cat with softer eyes.
Dark hair...
Soft...skin....
Where were you?
Oh yeah!
Yoongi glared at you. His nostrils flared.
“Did you just hit Jisu?”
His voice was even.
It wavered not.
And neither would you.
He was a big softy. Yoongi was all bark and no bite. Even his bark was reminiscent of a Chihuahua.
And not one of those feisty ones. More like one of the rat things that had no hair and barked under their breath when you tried to pet them.
...without teeth...
...with their tongue sticking out....
“Yoongi... it’s a car.”
“Y/N... it’s my pride and joy.”
You rolled your eyes.
“Whatever. I’m not getting in your death trap when you haven't had a proper eight hours, Yoongles.”
“Listen, Squirt,” he began and waves upon waves of distaste rolled over your spine. Your skin pimpled as a blush rose to your cheeks.
You HATED when he called you...
*shiver*
*gag*
Squirt
“...and you know that I do NOT like when people hit her! She’s beat up enough as it is without having people like you smacking on her-“
SMACK
You’d hit the front hood a little harder than you would have regularly just to shut him up.
A small wrinkle formed between his eyebrows. His lips fell open like he couldn’t really be bothered to hold it closed.
His pink tongue poked out slightly over his teeth.
He clicked, then-
“Okay fine.”
“Fine?”
“Yep.”
...you-what?
“Yes what?”
He pursed his lips and crossed his arms behind the stealing wheel.
“The road trip is canceled.”
You gaped at him.
D:
Like that.
Yoongi’s expression didn’t change. Instead, he uncrossed his arms and turned the engine off.
Slowly, but resolutely, he opened the driver’s side door and stepped out of the car.
“I-wha- Wait! Yoongi,” you ran around the front to where he stood.
He slammed the car door shut but he wasn’t angry. He patted the roof of the car affectionately, his back turned to you.
“...you can’t cancel-“
“Well you won’t get in the Jisu with me behind the wheel and you don’t know how to drive a fucking stick shift... what else is there to do?”
He was teasing you.
There was no way that he would cancel.
It was tradition after all.
And he would NEVER break tradition.
Well ok-
Yoongi wasn’t usually traditional.
Unless it came to you and your friendship.
He’s violently loyal to the point that one time-
When some guy had asked you out, upon your confirmation, promptly spanked your ass in the middle of home room, he’d stood without hesitation and slapped the dude’s ass back.
He’d gotten detention for a month.
The other guy, a month and a slap to the ass.
There was also a time when a nasty rumor was going around the school that that same guy and you were in a very... presumptuous position and your reputation had been shot.
Most of your other friends had believed it but not Yoongi.
Yoongi went around shooting nasty looks at anyone who dared say a bad word about you.
That’s when things had changed.
In retrospect.
For you at least. You doubt anything had changed for Yoongi.
But for you... that summer... the one of your junior year... changed everything.
No one was talking to you anymore. Your girls were now-
The Bitches ™️
And the only friend you had was Yoongi.
Your yoongi.
He’d become that then.
Yours...
Even though it wasn’t your place to make him so.
But you couldn’t help it. He’d changed. He’s grown an inch.
He’d started to work out-
And then stopped at the request of his mother because his clothing wasn’t fitting him and honestly Yoongi’s family didn’t have enough money to buy new threads-
-and for some ungodly reason, his father had given him his car and his now favorite cowhide leather jacket.
Vintage.
Let’s get that straight people.
It is vintage. Not old.
It was something in the way he listened to you.
With gentle nods and sarcasm at the ready.
It was his fake laugh.
And his laughter...
And the beautiful mornings
The way his gums popped out when you were falling asleep after pulling an all nighter under the stars.
It was his essence.
“I-well... but the road trip is-“
“Over unless you miraculously acquired the ability to drive stick or...”
He paused, looking at you over his leather clad shoulder.
“You get in Jisu, settle the snacks and apologize.”
You huffed. Your breath is visible in the early morning sky.
“I...” it was like being gutted.
Like a fish.
A cold dead fish...
“Am sorry.”
Whew.
That was tough but now you didn’t have to worry about him being salty all the way to-
“Not to me,” Yoongi said, interrupting your thoughts.
Your heart dropped into your stomach.
“Apologize to Jisu.”
“The car?” You said under your breath.
“Yeah,” he whispered back, a smug gum smile in place, “the car.”
You deflated.
He wasn’t kidding.
That was the worst part.
He genuinely wanted you to apologize to…
Jisu
The car.
With embarrassment filling your empty stomach-
Well save for your heart which was digesting nicely!
-you sighed and said:
“Jisu... sweet... old... rundown-“
“Watch it,” Yoongi groaned.
“Fine! I’m sorry I hit you. It was rude of me. Will you ever forgive me and let me ride you?”
There was a pause in which you processed your own words.
You hadn’t meant to.
And really, if your mind wasn’t in the gutter it would have meant nothing but your Innuendo hung in the freezing air around you.
Damn were you good at saying stupid shit.
Yoongi cleared his throat and moved closer to you.
Your heart-
Now in a puddle.
-skipped a beat.
Your cheeks rouged.
He wasn’t touching you but you could feel his breath on the back of your neck. The warmth contrasted strangely with the coolness of the morning.
God... what you would give for his lips to touch you.
For his hands to graze your skin.
To wrap around your waist-
“WE REGRET TO INFORM YOU THAT JISU DOES NOT ACCEPT YOUR APOLOGY AND FEELS HARASSED!”
D:
You jumped a foot in the air.
Your arms flung around you in fear. Your elbow hit against something.
Pain shot through your arm.
You turned only to see Yoongi holding his shoulder-
The one someone had nearly run over a couple years ago and he’d had problems with since.
-and your panic soared.
“Oh my God! Are you okay? Why did you fucking yell in my ear dumb ass!”
Regardless of your harsh words, you rushed over to his side as his face screwed up in pain.
Pain you caused.
Fuck.
But he was laughing.
He couldn’t be that badly hurt could he?
“If your next question is if I’ll let you ride me the answer is a hard yes.”
Humiliation and anger rushed through your veins and into your fingertips.
Of their own accord, they began to smack every part of him they could reach.
“HEY! Why does Jisu get a better apology than me?!”
“Because Jisu is a girl and not an ass!”
Tumblr media
It was in the way you always got the same taco from the corner stores and also rolled your eyes when he mentioned your addiction to strong coffee.
It was the way you snorted lightly-
And sometimes not so lightly.
-as he drove into the day.
It was the way you were drooling in that exact moment as the sun hit your pretty face and the seat was pulled back as far as it could possibly go.
Or maybe it was none of those things.
Or all of them.
Yoongi had lost track if he was honest.
Of all the things that made him wish he could tell you how he felt.
That he loved the moles that covered your body.
The shine from your hair after it was freshly dried.
He loved your musky perfume and the lotions you’d purchased in bulk because:
“If I like it might as well buy 12 of them.”
He loved your logic and the lack thereof.
He loved your style.
The way you refused to “ruin” an outfit with a jacket if it didn’t match and how- without fail- you always wore whatever jacket he handed you completely disregarding what you always said.
Like the one that he had lain over your trembling body as you slept when he’d stopped to use the restroom.
It was his dad’s.
It was old-
Vintage as you liked to say.
(Or bugged him by saying any time he tried to say it was old.)
It was riddled with discoloration.
It was his most prized possession.
Right after his car.
And you.
Though he’d never admit it.
And seeing you inside the car with his jacket draped over you like a blanket was doing things to him that he couldn’t comprehend.
It was like being enveloped in silk and velvet after a nice hot bath filled with lavender and rosewood and vanilla.
It was like soft musk caressing the folds of his brain, sending dopamine straight to the pleasure center of his cranium.
What he would give to touch you.
... in a less than platonic way.
The way your jaw stayed placidly open was also doing things to him.
This much less... soft
And a lot more
Well there’s no sugar coating.
Hard.
You stirred in your slumber.
His thoughts jarred to a stop.
You blinked then woke slowly. Confusion was evident in your eyes.
Quickly replaced by realization.
You looked down at the leather on your body.
The slightest smile pulled at your pretty lips.
You didn’t sit up.
You curled your small hands into the leather and snuggled against the softness.
“Morning,” you said, your voice slightly higher pitched.
A shiver ran through his nerves. His skin pimpled.
“You mean midday,” he corrected with a chastising roll of his eyes but the corners of his lips pulled up.
Fuck.
You.
...WAIT NO!
He shook his head, trying to keep his eyes forward and his mind on the road.
“Same difference,” you grumbled, pushing your arms through the sleeves of the jacket the wrong way.
Your short fingers stuck out at the edge.
A brief image of those same fingers pumping and wrapped around his-
“When’s lunch? I’m starving.”
He swallowed thickly.
“Well we ate maybe like four hours ago... “
“Exactly. I need food,” you said, righting your seat.
“We have snacks,” he said.
“But like... I want a burger.”
“Isn’t it too early for your road trip burger?”
Because every single road trip without fail, you both stopped at your favorite burger place and ate but it was only once in the whole road trip and you usually liked to save it for the road trip back to wherever you had come from for that year so you had something to look forward to.
“Mmmm, I’m feeling a shift in the matrix,” you said.
“Do you even know what the matrix is? Have you seen that movie?”
Offended, you turned to Yoongi.
He stayed facing the front.
“I LOVE Tom Cruise.”
“He’s not in that movie genius.”
You were silent for a second. Your eyes were wide.
“Hm... could have sworn....”
He smiled at the sun almost right above the car. There was not a cloud in the sky and he didn’t feel the least bit tired.
On the other hand he felt completely rejuvenated.
After a couple of miles, Yoongi let his smile settle and he cleared his throat as u set up your favorite road trip playlist.
You glance at him.
“You might wanna wipe the drool from your cheek by the way.”
“Fu-damn it Yoongi, why didn’t you say something earlier?”
Tumblr media
It was raining.
Heavily.
Sadly, no men in sight aside from your long time friend.
Though...
Maybe not so sadly.
It had only been a couple more hours.
You had stopped for your burger.
And the sun was up and then-
BOOM
Thunderstorm.
Honestly, you were slightly worried.
Yoongi had been driving for a total of about ten hours that day and he’d been running on three hours of sleep.
You guys still had a couple more days of road trip to go.
Usually they lasted around three to four depending on how annoying you are being. And that’s counting the drive back home.
But at this rate... you guys might have to turn back early.
Now, you had no real clue where you guys were headed.
You never really did.
Yoongi never told you.
But it was cool.
Cool cool cool cool cool
Totally cool.
You trusted him and he had never led you astray.
Though... that one time when you guys got lost for nearly a week because he refused to check the GPS was kind of astray....
Anyway.
You never doubted he had good plans.
He’d taken you to amusement parks and landmarks and historical sights just for the hell of it.
He’d taken you wonderful places so you had never questioned him.
This time... you really, really wanted to know if a thunderstorm was even worth it.
You opened your mouth to ask but were instantly shushed.
Taken aback your eyes widened.
Again you tried to speak but one of Yoongi’s fingers came up to your lips to keep you silent.
“Look it’s coming down hard and I really cannot focus when you speak.”
You crossed your arms, his leather jacket rumpled slightly as it rubbed against itself after you had put it on correctly.
It smelled so much like him.
The leather smell permeated through your nostrils. But under it was something else. Something woody and fresh that was so... Yoongi, it made your head spin.
You frowned but settled in your seat with your mouth shut.
Soft lo-fi filled the air in the car.
You were no longer cold.
For obvious reasons which didn’t include the heating because it was broken in the car.
But you felt a shiver of fear run down your spine.
Yoongi’s black hoodie seemed darker now that the sky was cloudy.
It was pulled up to his elbows, his forearms out in the open-
As if that wasn’t illegal or some shit.
- and flexed slightly. His veins, prominent.
Another chill ran down your body.
This time... for a reason completely unrelated to your circumstances.
It was going to be a long drive.
Tumblr media
The car broke.
Jisu broke.
It was about time it did too.
Though Yoongi was having a hard time.
Honestly... he was tearing up.
Or at least, you thought he was.
But he refused to look at you as the tow truck dropped you off at the nearest motel.
It was still raining ugly and you were still unbelievably cold.
Though maybe you were playing it up a little so that Yoongi would put up with you cuddling into his side.
It was partially for you but it was also for him.
He didn’t want to admit it but you knew.
You knew he needed something to ground him.
What better to do that with than with yourself?
“We’re here,” the driver said, squinting through the downpour.
“Thanks again for the lift,” you said since you knew Yoongi wouldn’t speak in fear of his voice breaking.
“Well you gotta pay darlin’” the driver said with a wink in your direction.
“But you’re welcome nonetheless. I can try to get you closer if you would like. Wouldn’t want you and your boyfriend getting a cold.”
A deep crimson blush filled the blood vessels in your cheeks and neck.
Your throat closed.
You coughed.
On instinct you pushed Yoongi away and made a disgusted face.
Yoongi’s nose twitched, his shoulders slumped.
“We- were not-“
“She’s single,” Yoongi said, his voice much stronger than you expected it to be.
“Friends,” he clarified.
Disappointment flooded your mind.
Friends. And that was that.
Tumblr media
“I’m sorry but we only have one room available for the night,” the clerk said.
There was only one room?
“Does it at least have two beds?” Yoongi asked, giving you a worried look over his shoulder.
His hair was slicked to his head.
Waving slightly.
“I’m sorry sir,” the clerk said, “it’s a single queen bed. That’s really all we have.”
There’s only one bed????
What the fuck kind of fan fiction were you living in?
What are the damn odds?
Being friends since forever ago did not mean that you had shared a bed before.
There had always been a line that you didn’t-
Couldn’t
Wouldn’t
-cross.
This was by no means normal.
You glanced around the lobby trying to avoid looking at your friend.
“Well... okay. Shit. Yeah give me the room,” Yoongi said under his breath as if you, not hearing him, would make up for him taking the room.
He didn’t want you to think he’d planned this.
He hadn’t.
Why would he have?
How could he have?
He can’t control the fucking weather.
Regardless, as he got the key to the room he couldn’t help but feel sleazy.
He paid then thanked the clerk.
You were shivering.
Damn you and your insistence on not wearing a damn jacket.
His wasn’t enough.
You needed a shower. A warm one.
Your lips were nearly blue.
Without hesitation, he picked up his duffle and your rolling suitcase.
He casually walked up to you and wrapped a protective arm around your shoulders.
The leather was wet.
And now ten times colder.
He led you to the hallways of rooms on the first floor.
It was the last room in the far corner.
Yoongi had thought of multiple scenarios in which you guys ended up in a room together but never had he thought it would be while you guys were “just friends”.
You shivered under the weight of his arm.
“Come on, Squirt. Let’s get you in dry clothes.”
There were two things you hated:
Being cold,
And
Yoongi calling you Squirt.
Yet, this time... you were grateful for the cold.
And for the nickname.
Was it-
*gasp*
Growing on you?
Yoongi opened the door and with it came the strong scent that inevitably came with hotels.
To you, it had always been kind of comforting.
Like family trips and new adventures.
Today though, it smelled very much like nerves and fear and something shifting in the air.
It felt like nothing was moving.
Even as you stepped into the room and onto the slightly too dark green carpet, it felt like the world around you both had stopped turning.
Yoongi’s arm fell from around you and you mourned the loss.
You listened rather than watched him bring the bags in.
It was somewhere between 60-70 degrees and the wetness of your hair was seeping into your scalp.
Still, you refused to take off the jacket that was growing heavier and heavier as the rain soak in.
“Hey Y/N, give me the jacket.”
You spun around as he set down the luggage. He held a hand out.
Suddenly, you really didn’t want to get rid of it.
It felt like your second skin.
“Uh... but I’m cold,” you argued.
“And if you stay in that jacket you’re going to catch a cold. Hand it over.”
He curled his fingers in a “come hither” motion.
Your throat went dry.
Then, as if under a spell, you pulled the slightly heavy leather off of you and handed it off.
Yoongi watched you remove the jacket in a trance-like state.
You were staring at his hand.
He felt the fabric fall into his palm but he wasn’t looking.
He was staring, mouth open at your shirt.
Your white, long sleeve, wet, shirt.
And you know.
We all know…
What happens when a white shirt gets wet.
And now, Yoongi had the full boob-
PROOF
(dude that doesn’t even sound the same)
He had the full proof.
He blinked owlishly, glued to the way the fabric stuck to your chest.
He could see the skin tone bra that you were wearing.
The lines of your stomach visible lightly.
All the blood rushed to one of two places.
You know which.
Don’t lie.
He pressed the cold jacket against his body so that it covered what was quickly growing.
You watched him curiously as his mouth shut with a click.
You followed his gaze as goosebumps covered your arms.
That’s when you saw it.
And embarrassment wasn’t a strong enough word to describe what you felt.
You crossed your arms over your chest but you couldn’t turn away.
There was something else running through your veins aside from the humiliation.
Hope.
Because Yoongi wasn’t turning away and you weren’t stupid either.
You could see the strategic way that he was holding the slightly dripping jacket right in front of his…
Area…
And he had taken his eyes off your chest and now wasn’t even looking at you.
In a sudden burst of confidence-
And let's be honest, probably terrible judgement.
-you shimmied out of your shirt and balled it up.
Without letting yourself think of it too much before you chickened out, you tossed it right at his chest area.
Since it was wet, it made a wet-
PLOP
On his shoulder.
Confusion was clear on his expressionless face as he looked at the fabric.
He glanced at you out of the corner of his eyes in question then did a double take.
You licked your lips nervously but tried to keep your nerves at bay.
This was normal.
You always hung out in your bra with your oldest friend.
Everyday things…
Pft.
Easy.
“Wh-what are you doing,” Yoongi asked, his voice wavering.
“The shirt was soaked through. I thought that I should get out of it as well.”
Then mustering all of your courage, you unbutton your jeans.
The pop of the button was unnaturally loud in your ears.
The zipper was deafening.
“W-wait! Y/N what the fuck?”
You looked up trying to keep your ‘this is totally normal’ look on your face.
“Getting out of my wet clothes. Isn’t that what you said for me to do?”
“I said to get out of my jacket,” he said harshly, using it to gesture at you half naked. Your fingers hooked on the waistband of your jeans.
“Well the logic follows, doesn’t it? Wet jacket, wet shirts, wet pants…”
You pushed them down your legs without looking at him.
“Off.”
You heard him hiss under his breath.
Fear gripped you as the cold air of the room hit your skin which was a little moist.
“I don’t know what you’re playing at,” Yoongi began.
There was anger in his voice.
“But whatever it is. It’s not funny,” he finished throwing the jacket onto the floor.
Without another word, he turned on his heel and walked into the restroom.
Your heart sank.
D:
Tumblr media
It was later in the night and you were huddled under the white blankets of the queen bed and Yoongi had yet to come out of the restroom.
You had thought you’d heard some low grunts coming from the restroom but then the shower had turned on and you heard nothing but the rain and the water.
Of course, unbeknownst to you, the grunts were very real.
Very much soft-
(in volume)
- for a reason.
And very much because of you.
It was when it was getting too intense that Yoongi decided to take a cold shower to calm down his hormones.
Still, he had decided to stay in the restroom for most of the night.
He was a night person anyway.
Always got his best thinking done when the moon was full and up.
This was no different.
He sat on the toilet seat, his legs spread wide and his elbows on his knees.
He was in his underwear and the shirt he had worn all day.
He hadn’t gotten the courage to walk out.
Not with the humiliation of having beat one out
(well not completely just a little bit)
(not that he was...little…)
To you in a bathroom while you were partially naked in the next room.
He couldn’t make heads or tails of it.
Were you just so comfortable with him that you guys had crossed the friendship line to the point of no return?
Or were you attracted to him and that was some grand gesture?
Either way, he was terrified to guess wrong.
Why had he thought that this year would be different?
Why had he thought he could sweep you away on some romantic road trip in his crappy old car when he didn’t know the first thing about being romantic?
His idea of romantic was throwing a vintage-
Old.
let's call it how it is.
Old jacket on you when you were asleep.
It was spanking that asshole who had smacked your ass all those years ago.
And sticking by you when your other friends turned away from you.
It was branding them the Bitches and making sure that you knew that you hadn’t been at fault for the rumors.
Romantic Yoongi held your hand through your first year of collage and held your hair back the first time you drank too much.
It was him tucking you in when you guys spent all night out looking at the stars.
It was taking care of you when you were sick.
It was…
Throwing his prized jacket on you when you were cold…
And sacrificing his jacket so that the rain didn’t hit you directly even thought that might ruin it…
...
So he could see how you guys were confused.
Because isn’t that what friends did all the time?
Take care of each other?
And now, he had crossed a line he couldn’t get back from.
It was too late.
He’d missed his window-
If there was any window to begin with.
He’d missed it.
And maybe he just needed to be okay with that.
Tumblr media
When you woke up, it was still super dark.
You half expected it to still be night but when you reached for your phone you realized that it was nearly noon and Yoongi hadn’t woken you.
You sat up, forgetting that you had slept in your underwear.
The sheets slipped from your top, the bra still on.
Suffice to say, your chest hurt.
Instinctively, you reached behind you to unclasp the bra but-
“Hey-hey-hey! Man in the room,” you heard from somewhere.
Your hands halted, still groggy, you blinked in the darkness.
“What man? All I hear is a grumpy Yoongi,” you mumbled, rubbing the sleep from your eyelids.
A sigh.
A groan.
Then a lamp turned on before you.
The light hit your sensitive eyes. You blinked against the brightness and when you could finally comfortably open your eyes, your jaw dropped.
Yoongi-
Your Yoongi was sitting in the beige armchair.
His pale legs were spread wide.
His boxers-
He was wearing boxers…
!!!!
-were far too loose and hung on his thighs.
From your position, you could see his bulge though it was clearly not hard, or at least not entirely.
Still, the fabric was pulled over it.
His chest was covered with a white T-shirt.
His arms were on the arm rests.
Your mouth fell open.
Water…
God you needed water.
You looked around you but there was not a single glass in sight.
“I don’t know how long it’s been since you’ve realized, Squirt but I am very much a man.”
You avoided his eyes.
“I try not to think of you that way.” you mumbled, pulling the sheets up to your chest.
Lying through your teeth…
You know..
Like a liar.
There was a pause.
“Why are you so shy all of a sudden? Last night you had no problem stripping in front of me.”
You froze.
What...what was happening here?
“You- you seemed less than happy about that if I recall correctly,” you said then when he said nothing you added, “and don’t call me Squirt.”
Yoongi raised an eyebrow.
And ran a hand through his hair.
It stood on end.
Fuck.
Fuck….
He looked so hot.
“Only because you caught me off guard. Now,” he gestured between himself  and you, his fingers conveniently pointing towards…
“We’re even.”
Even?
Even?
“So if you were to take off something else, I’d have to as well. For fairness. Of course.”
You-
Did he-
D:
“We-Fair? Do- Do you hear yourself right now?”
You scrunch your nose.
You smelled something fishy.
Veerry...veeery fishy.
“Yes I speak korean, Y/N. The question is,” he stood, his boxers settling over his long legs, his shirt was tucked slightly into the elastic at his hips.
Where were you supposed to look?
The muscles on his arms.
His thighs, begging you to ride-
Or somewhere in the middle?
He had to know what he was doing to you.
He had to know that walking around in the loosest pair of boxers would draw your eyes straight to the center of his legs.
He wasn’t stupid.
So what angle was he playing?
(Acute ;])
“...Do you?”
He was by your side now. Your face was level with his stomach.
How does one react when your closest friend of your whole life is suddenly very close to naked in front of y-
Ohhhhhhhhhh....
“This is about me stripping yesterday...isn’t it?”
You held the covers up to your chest awkwardly.
Suddenly, you felt really stupid.
You shouldn’t have stripped without his consent.
You just really thought that...if you pushed a little, He’d see you as more than just “That girl that he hated in elementary school and is now stuck to him like gum.”
Did you just make that up?
Yeah.
Okay.
Moving on…
“What do you think,” he asked, crossing his arms over his chest. The muscles flexed under the white. Behind him, through the mirror, you could see his back side reflected.
Sculpted.
Fucking damn it.
If he was going to reject you couldn’t he have done it with pants on??
“I think…” but you couldn’t think. It was too much.
Too soon.
Too quickly.
You were on the edge of spilling the beans.
Teetering on a cliff and you couldn’t see the ground.
Was it ocean below?
You didn’t know.
You shook your head and forced yourself to look into his eyes.
“I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable, Yoongles… I’m sorry,” you said.
His smug smile fell.
A small frown pulled at his lips and his shoulders slumped.
Yoongi had made a choice. He’d decided he was going to push.
He’d decided it was time to tell you.
This coming after he got a call fairly early in the morning about the car needing a part that wasn’t available and they wouldn’t be handing him Jisu that day.
Meaning… you guys were stuck together for another day.
In a motel.
Alone.
With nothing to do.
This was why he’d decided to wait for you in his boxers.
You’d made the first move and now it was his turn.
He’d hoped you would reciprocate.
But he had clearly been wrong.
It wasn’t that you were trying to seduce him.
No…
You had simply grown too comfortable with each other and your state of half dress had nothing to do with hidden feelings for him.
Well, he supposed that at least he hadn’t declared his love for you like he’d planned to do initially…
...as much as  saying “Hey, I kind of wouldn’t mind going out with you”-
(this was a big deal because Yoongi avoided leaving his house at all costs… in all honesty, he hated road trips but you made it bearable and even a little fun)
- could be considered declaring his love for you.
He didn’t think he could handle the look of disgust on your cute face as he told you he had feelings for you.
Feelings…
What a joke.
Maybe this was for the best.
If you stayed friends, then it was probable that you guys would never stop talking to each other.
Another thing he couldn’t handle was losing you.
“It’s no fun if you just apologize, Squirt,” he said after a brief pause, choosing to ignore the sinking feeling in his stomach.
You sighed.
He’d confirmed your worst fear.
He didn’t like you.
Not in the way you liked him.
And you’d made him uncomfortable.
“Do you want me to take it back and give you the wrong answer then? You know, for your pride?”
Yoongi sighed then chuckled.
“Would you? It would really make my day.”
You smiled up at your friend.
Like two pieces of a puzzle you had fallen back into your old dynamic.
It was almost like you guys weren’t standing half naked in front of each other.
“Anything to make your day, Yoongles.”
In a second, Yoongi had scooted you over. The other side of the bed was cold but you didn’t mind.
He slipped under the covers next to you.
He’d settled under them, his body faced towards you before he spoke again. A small smile on his soft baby lips.
“Is it weird that I’m starting to like when you call me ‘Yoongles’?”
You mirrored his position, putting a hand under your head. Your chest was slightly exposed, still covered by the sheets but he didn’t look down and you didn’t mind.
“No… is it weird I’m starting to like you calling me Squirt?”
“No,” he confirmed with a slight shrug.
A comfortable silence built up between you. Your eyes started to feel heavy.
Tentatively, Yoongi reached out and pushed a strand of hair behind your ear. His soft touch made you fall further into the land of sleep.
When your breath had evened out, Yoongi tapped your nose then traced your slightly parted lips.
This road trip hadn’t gone how he wanted it to.
Not by a long shot.
But he couldn't say he was totally disappointed.
As you slept, he felt his own eyes begin to close. His eyelids were heavy.
He fell into the comfortable darkness not too long after you did.
You guys were friends.
And maybe, he just had to accept that.
Maybe it was for the best.
And maybe… just maybe… he could grow to be okay with it.
Some day.
Don’t hate me....

Heartbeats were a strange feeling, if one was aware of them. Lucien-no that wasn't right- felt his pulse from his scar. He opened his eyes and found himself surrounded by old friends. They looked at him with bright eyes, with Cree being the only exception. She looked at the tiefling with sharp eyes. It was dark, he couldn't tell the time. But as his eyes adjusted to the dark, nobody looked happy to see him.
"You have a friend. Said this was his fault. What should we do with him?" Cree spoke in a low tone. There were quiet sounds of suppressed sobs and soft gasps. It sounded like-
The tiefling turned around and the pulse beating against his scar froze.
Caleb looked awful. His skin was pale, blue veins showing through and his lips blue. His hair was matted and muddy. He was shivering from the cold and shaking from hunger. His clothes were bloodied and he had bruises on his face. The bandages were dangling off of his arms, stained red. Lucien practically could sense the infection growing. He sat in front of the grave on his knees, clutching his clothes to his body. It was at this point that the rain and cold made itself known to the Nonagon, making his hair and red, torn clothes stickbto him like a second skin. Caleb was soaking wet, rain making his clothes even worse for the situation. A small puddle of reddish mud built beneath him.
"What happened to him." The tone was harsh, maybe too much so but the wizard was important to him
Caleb flinched at the sound of his voice. Yes, the voice was too harsh. The Nonagon kneeled next to him. Two fingers were placed under his chin and Caleb let his eyes meet- Molly? Mollymauk fit for the moment, right now. Caleb took a shaking breath. He looked even worse up close. There were dark bags under his eyes. Some of it bruising, some from exhaustion. Green stains colored his skin, matching the grass around the grave.
"What happened to him?" Mollymauk repeated. "He travels in a group." Unease filled his mind. Were they-
"I left. Someone had to- after everyone was saved and Lorenzo killed- someone had to keep watch in case-" Caleb rocked back and forth. "It's just me." Ok so as far as he knew, they were alive. Maybe Cree can scry on them later, but that's not important right now.
"And the bruises?" Molly let his hands grab Caleb's shoulders. There was dried- something- it was nearly impossible to see what it was without light,  but it ran down the part of his neck behind his ear, and onto his back.
"Someone tried to grab your coat." Caleb looked away, towards Cree. Lucien stood up. "Find us the nearest Inn with a hot bath. Take him with us."
"As a prisoner?" Cree asked, almost happy at the thought.
Molly hid his frown at the thought. "This man is loyal. He comes with us as a friend. I will make anyone answer for any injuries."
"As the Nonagon wishes." Cree sighed and roughly brought Caleb to his feet. Not healing him, Lucien noticed. He was tired. Coming back to life was...unpleasant. He was tired. His soul felt like it was floating through the air. He needed a nap- or a drink. Getting out of the rain would help. It was starting to sting.
"Bring the coat." Molly added. Cree openly scowled. Caleb wobbled towards him. There was a horse and cart. Molly helped Caleb into the cart and climbed in.
"Is it you?" Caleb whispered. The hope and wonder in his voice was heartbreaking. Molly wanted to bundle him up and tell him it was ok.
"When it's just us? Yes I'm me. I'm Molly, otherwise I'm Lucien." Molly nodded. Caleb let tears fall from his cheeks, leaving streaks in the mud on his face. Molly opened his arms and Caleb buried his face into the crook of Molly's neck. Molly purred and hummed.
"I'm sorry you died." Caleb whispered.
"Just...there's time for that later." Molly promised. "Thank you for staying."
Caleb responded by whispering something into Molly's chest. Molly purred louder and Caleb drifted off to sleep.
Molly placed a hand on the back of Caleb's neck, feeling him breathe.  Caleb's hair had grown out well past his shoulders. It would look so nice washed and brushed out.
"Nonagon, is it wise to bring along someone that claimed responsibility for-" Cree spoke up, climbing into the cart that was now moving.
"I made my own choices, both when I died and now. The fact that he stayed says more about his character than me falling. I think such kindness should be returned." It felt weird to Molly, speaking so formally, but he had memories of Lucien again. Had the memories and habits. Even his accent was thicker. "I need to recover my strength in these coming days then we make our way north."
"Finish what we started?" Cree asked hopefully.
Molly frowned. It would take a lot for that trip. "Yes."
The Tombtakers found a nice inn rather easily. They rented three rooms to rest.
Molly settled into a lush room with the mattress being a giant pillow. There the actual pillows were wonderful for heads with horns while the mattress enveloped him. The blankets were silk and felt wonderful against his skin. The walls had beautiful murals of the gods that was allowed in the kitchen. The platinum dragon danced on the ceiling, seeming to sparkle against the candle lights.
There was a door to the side, a bath that could fit five. The wash room was just as painted but with murals of the moonweaver and wildmother hidden in a mural of fields lit by a full moon. Molly stretched out on the bed. Caleb laid next to him, absolutely filthy but solid enough to make Molly want to grab onto him and never let go. His eyes were moving quickly under his eyelids.
Molly let his hand rise, becoming even with Caleb's cheek, but pulled away at the last second, letting it come to rest in the area between them. Caleb didn't let his face change but raised his hand, resting it over Molly's.
Molly hummed and let sleep overtake him.
----------------
Molly woke up to an empty bed. He lifted his head to look around. Cree sat in a nearby chair, crossleged. There was a familiar orange cat sleeping by his head.
"Your companion is washing. It would be unsightly for one to travel with you to be so…" Cree let her words die out. "How are you feeling?"
Molly felt worse than before but he felt more alive than how he felt when he immediately woke up. Mud was still all over him but he could wait for his turn.
"And the coat?"
"We have it, but you don't expect to wear it." Cree huffed.
"It would be nice to keep for sentimental value." Molly smiled, not mentioning that if someone were to peak in from his old friends, they have something to look on from.
Took a step out into the main room, dressed in nice looking travel clothes. His hair was tied back and brushed while still looking a bit damp.
He wore an off-white shirt, the sleeve pulled up to see dark gray cloth wrappings around his forearms. And black pants. Only the shoes were the same, but they were made for travel. Molly took a moment before looking up at Caleb's face. Oh. He was shaved. Molly had to pull his eyes away. "I need to sleep for one more day, but afterwards we can move out." Molly stood up.
"If that is what you want." Cree sighed and walked out of the room. Molly looked at Caleb. After she left he physically relaxed.
"You look better." Molly hummed.
"Lucien, I do not think she likes me." Caleb spoke carefully.
Molly frowned. "So what? I do. And you are clever."
"She's worried about me outranking her." Caleb raised an eyebrow. "I wasn't exactly at my best last night."
"You were more composed than most would be. We'll see how traveling together goes." Molly hummed, patting Caleb on the chest. Caleb took a step back, letting Molly into the bath.
The door remained open as Molly took his bath.
"Talk to me. I need….I don't know. Just-" Molly sighed.
"What do you wish to discuss?" Caleb's voice was even.
"What happened after-"
"I killed Lorenzo. We saved the others, we came here, dealt with the gentleman. Someone in the group told Cree, but I couldn't be with them anymore. There's a new cleric with them."
Molly sighed. "Did you leave because of the new cleric."
"No. Caduceus is wonderful. Good for them. It's just that, years ago, I had a teacher that said I was not good enough to be a leader and had to be built up. He...asked a lot of me. When you died…" Caleb let out a self loathing laugh, the sound raspy. "I do not handle death well."
"I made a choice to use too much magic. Not you, not anyone else." Molly countered. "And Yasha?"
"She left after mourning at your grave." Caleb shrugged.
"Maybe she'll find us on our way." Molly smiled.
The water was warm. Like flames reheated it before he went into it. It helped with the stiffness of his joints. His muscles relaxed as it became easier to wash the caked mud off of himself. "I know Cree did something to you." Molly said quietly.
"Do not fault her for it. She and I had a disagreement about the people who had the privilege to see you awaking." Caleb froze.
"How bad was the disagreement?" Molly sat up.
"Nothing but a few scrapes and bruises." Caleb shrugged nonchalantly.
"I don't like that. She has no right to say anything given how they abandoned my grave but you returned." Molly stood up and looked around, seeing fresh clothes waiting for him, with a deep red coat.
"I'll be sure to pass along your discontent." Caleb said, almost to himself.
"I can tell her myself but- Caleb…." Molly took a look at Caleb. There was a small trail of blood from the back of his head, behind his ear. Molly grabbed a bit of his red coat and held it to the wound. "Let me guess- Cree?"
Caleb's silence said everything.
"You shouldn't let her walk over you. This can't continue." Molly sighed.
"There were more pressing concerns." Caleb whispered. "I'll get food." He stood up, leaving his notebook open to show about a dozen different spells. Molly recognized a couple of them but they were personalized. None of these spells were anywhere else. Clever wizard. Molly's Lucien instincts told him to protect him because of the advantage he brought. Molly's Mollymauk instinct told him to protect him because of friendship and- nope not going there.
"He's an assassin, you know. Those scars on his arms are the same as Volstruckers." Cree whispered. Slipping through the door as Molly closed the book.
"The what?" Molly didn't care about what she was saying.
"Cerberus Assembly assassins. They hunt traitors. Will kill even their own family. The Gentleman deals with the Assembly from time to time." Cree shrugged.
"That's none of my business." Molly shrugged. Mentally he was trying to will her out of the room.
"It should be. What if he's with the woman who-"
"I doubt that very much." Molly hissed, shutting her up. "Thank you for your concern but issues regarding Caleb are mine and mine alone." So fuck off. Molly added mentally.
"If that's what you want." Cree sighed with exacerbation.
"Yes it is. Leave him be unless I say otherwise." Molly swallowed his anger. He knew that Caleb had a past but he didn't want to know. It didn't affect him. Cree just shook her head and stepped out of the room.
Caleb came back with a plate full of meat and potatoes. Molly perked up a bit and noticed that Caleb had Molly's coat in his arms. The necklace he always wore showed through his shirt. Caleb handed the plate over to Molly. Caleb sat on the bed and looked at the coat.
"The walls are rather thin here. One could hear a lot of conversations." Caleb hummed.
"You heard Cree." Molly facepalmed. "I'm sorry-"
"She's right. I was trained for that line of work, but...I dropped out of school." Caleb took a deep breath. "'Caleb Widogast' isn't even my birth name."
"What do you want me to call you?"
"Caleb."
Molly gave him a smile. "Then Caleb is all that matters. Now eat, we need to gain our strength again."
--------------
Caleb wore the coat. It was colorfully loud and sparkled delightfully, and Caleb wore it, matching it with the necklace he never took off.  Molly loved it. Magic morphed around Caleb. Caleb had written a few spells of his own. There was a tent, a giant cat's claw, a tower. The tower was his favorite. It was warm, colorful.
There were separate rooms for the Tombtakers.
There were intended separate rooms for each of the Tombtakers.
Molly liked to sleep in Caleb's room. Molly was on his way to bed when he heard a conversation.
--------------
Caleb had braided his hair as he was ready for bed. Cree was sitting on the couch in his room. She was not invited into the room but she was there. Practically purring.
"I'm just saying that the rest of us have a bond. The Nonagon can use us whenever he needs. The rest of us are able to be communication tools for him. It's wonderful. It's like never being alone. It's like letting something devine overtake you."
That made his stomach drop.
"That sounds wonderful to those that enjoy it, but I will have to refuse." Caleb smiled politely, but opened the door for her.
"It is what it is, Bren." Cree shrugged. Caleb froze, causing the lights to flicker in the tower for a moment before his smile dropped.
"I don't know what your deal is Cree, but stop. I'm not stealing your precious Nonagon from you. I am his friend." Caleb glared. "I have no intentions of betraying him."
"I know. I just like knowing who I travel with." Cree smiled and went on her merry way.
Caleb just shook his head.
"She still bothering you?" Molly asked, slipping into the room.
"She's just showing that she's watching me. It's nothing." Caleb shrugged.
"She said a name that bothered you." Molly pointed out. "I'm assuming it is your birth name."
"Title, really. It is no matter. How close are we to Aeor?" Caleb smiled.
"A few days' travel, normally. We do have to stop. I have to go...even a score. A Cerberus Assembly member, she hallowed me out for my magic. She has to die." Molly hugged himself.
"Any way I can help?" Caleb looked Molly in the eyes.
"Stay safe. Stay here in the tower. She's hired some old friends." Molly sat on the bed.
"Who?"
"The Mighty Nein."
Caleb raised an eyebrow.
"They don't look happy about it either." Molly laughed. "Yasha is with them. They look good."
"Do you want me to prepare warm beds?" Caleb rubbed his hands together.
"You are a genius." Molly laughed.
"It will be nice to see them again." Caleb sat down next to him.
"When this is over, do you think that they'd let me back in?" Caleb asked.
"You want to leave?" Molly asked.
"I'm worried about...Cree is worried that I might prove a distraction to you in regards to this team. I might agree, so after this, I might return to them." Caleb shrugged.
"If you go, I'm going. Fuck the Tombtakers." Molly bumped his forehead against Caleb's arm. "They don't get me. You do."
"I've always seen kinship with you, Mollymauk. I was always worried that you didn't see me as such an equal." Caleb ran his thumb over the decorated horns.
"I've always saw you as an equal. I am lucky to have met you." Molly slowly giving Caleb time to back out, let his tail wrap around Caleb's leg, right above the knee. Caleb took a deep breath, let his lips turn up, and those smirking lips pressed against Molly's.
Molly let out a chirp, followed by a high pitched ecstatic noise. Molly pulled Caleb closer and only let him go when he needed to breathe.
"Charmer." Molly smirked.
"Rest, Mollymauk. We have a big day tomorrow."
-------------
The next day was hard. Killing Vess was easy. Too easy. Maybe the Mighty Nein wanted her dead. Molly danced in the cold, waiting for the Mighty Nein to greet them, his black swords stood out against the snow.
"We never did go waltzing." Molly mused. Caleb, still wearing the large colorful coat, but this time layered with cotton to keep warm. He smiled warmly.
"I can work on adding a ballroom to the tower." Caleb promised. "We can talk about it later."
"Promises, Promises." Molly giggled.
"You two are worse than Yasha and Beau." A familiarly friendly voice rang out.
Caleb and Molly smiled at Jester. There was a big hug with tears in everyone's eyes. Yasha pulled Mollymauk into a bone crushing hug. Caleb watched the hug as a small green goblin jumped into Caleb's arms.
"Caleb! We thought you were dead." Nott yelled.
"I'm alright. Let me set up camp and we can talk." Caleb smiled.
"Just like that?" Fjord asked in disbelief. Both Caleb and Molly blinked in surprise. That voice was new. Neither Molly nor Caleb had any ground to comment, but it was new.
"We are not enemies." Caleb promised. "I missed all of you."
"We missed you too." Jester smiled. "You look good."
"So do all of you." Caleb grinned and summoned the door to the towers. "Welcome to my tower. I hope it is to your liking."

What Goes On - Ringo x Reader
Friends from childhood, an unlikely pair of Liverpudlians face the challenges of growing up.

Chapter Summary - November, 1957, Y/n decides to concentrate on schoolwork, but a bored and restless Richard has other plans.
-
“Doncha half to get back to work soon?” Y/n attempted to ask, mouth full.
Everyday since Richard had dropped out of school, he bought her a pastry from the local bakery and walked her home during his lunch break. At first, the baked good had served as reparations for what Y/n said was, quote, “Abandoning me all alone in hell,” but the tradition continued to stick.
“Nah, my boss let me off early,” he walked backwards to face her, “What do ya’ wanna do? My whole day’s cleared.”
Chewing her last bite, she brushed off her hands of any crumbs. Rich gestured for her to take back the schoolbag she forced him to carry, despite knowing she would just shake her head and make him hold it for the entire walk.
“I’ve got to study, I’m sorry.”
“Again? But you’ve been at it the entire week,” he complained.
“College is a lot more difficult than our old school, Rich. But I’ll go over to yours, if you’d like. Maybe… say, tutor you a bit?”
He rolled his eyes and turned back to face the right way.
“Don’t waste your energy trying.”
She huffed, “Fine, be illiterate your entire life.”
“I’m not illiterate.”
“You can hardly spell.”
“Well, I can read.”
“Oh, lovely, at seventeen years old, you’ve got at least half of it down.”
“Lay off you prick.”
Richard made a move to shove Y/n, but she dodged it, taking off down the sidewalk.
Accepting the stupidly immature challenge, he wasted no time chasing after her.
They maneuvered through pram-pushers who gave them a friendly nod, and business men who scowled at the very sight of their smiling faces.
The icy air felt like blades against her skin as she ran, but with Richie gaining on her, she only sped up the pace. Like usual Liverpool weather, the sky kept at a gloomy grey, and the cobble walkways were darker in color, dampened by the previous night’s rain.
Y/n hopped over the puddles, not wanting to get her oxfords dirty, but Richie couldn’t bring himself to care, charging straight through them.
Reaching their turn and not wanting to give up, Y/n sprinted across the road, Rich following close behind. They screamed out of both fear and amusement when cars honked at them, or shouted, expressing their vexation.
“No!” Y/n yelled, glancing backwards. She tried to speed up, but it was too late. Richard grabbed her arm and pulled her back, wrapping his arms around her shoulders to keep her from escaping. They struggled to catch their breath, each puff coming out as white clouds, that faded into the air. It proved difficult to do so, while simultaneously in a fit of laughter.
“Let me go!”
“Surrender!”
“Never!” Y/n wriggled around in his grip, but to no avail.
“I won’t until you admit what a loser you are.”
Rich laughed, a high pitched and boyish sound that always evoked a smile from Y/n, even while she was mumbling about how much of an arse he was.
Eventually tiring out, she went limp, fully defeated.
“You give up? Say it.”
“I give up.”
“And what?”
“You win, and I’m a loser! Now get off of me.”
He obliged with a grin of triumph then stepped away, and immediately, the winter air chilled her spine as if a blanket had been ripped off of her.
Was it odd to want the warmth back? To want him to pull her closer?
She walked a bit farther away from him, deciding it was odd.
They fell into comfortable silence, enjoying their peaceful stroll as they usually did when not bantering. As the town led further into Richie’s neighborhood, the houses became more and more decrepit, tiny lots with peeling paint and splintered door frames. Abundant rubble, sad reminders of the war, had become playgrounds for imaginative schoolboys. They had grown used to these surroundings, and now, reaching 10 Admiral Grove, the dirt coated bricks and rusty letterbox had become a warm, familiar welcome.
They hung up their coats and headed up the creaky, narrow stairs to his room.
Rich slung her bag onto the bed and sighed in relief. The amount of textbooks she had to haul around made him glad he’d dropped out.
Y/n sat at the foot of the bed, grabbing her bag and pulling out a few of them.
“Mind if I practice a bit?” Richie asked, already walking towards his drums. His stepdad, Harry, had recently bought him his very own set, and he had become a menace, constantly playing, even into late hours of the night.
She groaned. She loved his drumming, really, but it wasn’t the best background noise for calculus homework. Still, she nodded for him to go ahead.
An hour passed, and Richie was now lying on the floor, twirling his drumsticks. One slipped and smacked him on the face, and he glanced up at Y/n to make sure she didn’t see that. Luckily, she was laying on his bed, fully absorbed in her history notes.
Another hour gone. Richie put on a record and cranked up the volume. Y/n made him turn it down. He resorted to making tea.
Sixty minutes later. His half-drunk tea had gotten cold and now sat solitary on his table. He was laying beside Y/n, flipping through her books and giggling about the human anatomy photos.
By six in the evening, Richard had grown fidgety and impatient.
“Y/n.”
No reply.
“Y/n.”
Nothing.
“Fine. I’ll just take a nap.”
He laid back and sprawled his limbs about the bed, making a point to bother her. With his leg over her back and an arm balanced on her head, she finally snapped at him in irritation.
“What do you want?”
He stared directly at her for a moment, then shut his eyes and pretended to snore.
Y/n pushed him off of her and grabbed a pillow to try to suffocate him.
“Someone help!”
He dramatically writhed around before going limp like a corpse.
Slowly, she lifted the pillow up, peering behind it to see his face, eyes shut with his tongue hanging out of the corner of his mouth.
He snatched the pillow from her and pushed her over with it.
She screamed, stifling her laughs and curling into a ball as Rich whacked her with it, her schoolwork spilling off the bed.
“I hate you,” she stated as he flopped backwards, both out of breath.
“Aww,” he cooed mockingly. She threw the pillow at him and got up to retrieve the things from the floor. “Seriously?”
“Seriously, what?”
“It’s been hours, Y/n. It’s Friday night. Let’s go do something.”
“I look horrible, I don’t want to go out.”
“No you don’t, you always look nice. Can we go, please, please, please, plea-“
“Ok, fine! Let me get ready, will you?”
Like a puppy, Richie sat on the edge of the bed, watching Y/n intently as she stood in front of the mirror, trying her best to brush her wind-tousled hair with his comb. She readjusted her black headband, making sure her bangs were out to frame her face. Once finished, she grabbed a tube of rosy lipstick from her bag, and dotted just a bit on before rubbing her lips together to blend it.
It had to look natural.
Her mother had once told her she looked like a hooker for wearing full coverage makeup, and for some strange reason, she felt uncomfortable doing anything remotely feminine around her father. Even when they weren’t near, the need to appease them stuck.
She turned around, “How do I look?”
“Like a square,” he teased.
Y/n glared, and he was quick to reword his statement.
“A pretty square!”
/
The gusty, evening air was as cold as ever, and the two of them stuffed their hands in their pockets, trying to somehow shrink themselves into the warmth of their coats.
“What did you do at work today?” Y/n asked, shivering.
“Uhm, we really just fooled around. Roy, Eddie, and me.”
“Ah, I gotta see the Eddie Miles band in action one day.” “Actually, we renamed ourselves Eddie Clayton and the Clayton Squares. We might pick up some gigs soon, I don’t know, hopefully.”
“Oh, that’d be fab. I’ll be there for every one of your shows,” she looked up to meet his eye, “I promise.”
Richie smiled. It was small, but sincere and warm. He held her gaze just a bit longer, admiring how she looked under the yellow glow of the lampposts. The tip of her nose was pink from the cold, and the way she looked all bundled up was so... so... adorable.
He cleared his throat and turned away from her. “Thanks.”
They got on the bus to Garston, and as it was Y/n’s turn to pay the driver, she caught up to Rich when she was finished.
Even if the bus was completely vacant, the two ran up to sit on the second floor, racing to get there before it started driving again. It was just another one of their antics.
Finally arriving at Wilson Hall, the two took off their coats and followed the crowd to the dance floor. On stage was a group of rough-looking boys, playing as loud as they could with their makeshift instruments. The audience nearly matched the volume, laughing and hollering as they spun about.
“Well, c’mon then,” Richie grinned, reaching out to grab her hands.
She giggled bashfully as he twirled her, and after a bit, loosened up until the both of them were twisting wildly as if their life depended on it. Richard’s slicked back curls bobbed as he stepped, and Y/n’s circle skirt swayed proudly with her hips.
It was crowded, hot, and stuffy, but while dancing, no one seemed to care. It was electrifying, freeing, and for once they were able to forget about their hardships and stresses.
The song came to an end and the crowd gave an applause, eagerly awaiting for the next band to come on.
“I’m going for a coke, d’you want anything?”
Y/n shook her head, “I’m okay, I’ll wait here.”
Rich nodded and squeezed his way through to the bar.
She stood alone, fiddling with her fingers as the next band started and the couples began to dance.
The music now was more jazz than rock or skiffle, and everyone was paired up, swinging each other around and leaving Y/n to stick out like a sore thumb.
Looking over the room, she thought about how much better the other girls looked than her. Their dresses were sleeveless, their faces glowing with expertly done makeup, and their hair somehow curled perfectly at the ends.
She tugged off her cardigan. Would that help? It didn’t show any skin -her button down blouse preventing it- but at least it took a layer off. She glanced down at herself. Were her boobs not big enough? Nah, they were an all-right size for her age, but maybe just a little bigger would be-
“You alright, miss?”
She gasped, snapping her eyes up from her chest.
There, towering over her, was a man with Elvis-esque hair, a fitted leather jacket, and a smirk tugging at his lips. He looked older, perhaps in his early twenties, and he… just wow.
Y/n was taken aback.
“I-I’m alright.”
“How come a pretty girl like you doesn’t have a partner?”
“Oh, uh, thank you. I’m actually waiting for someone to get back, he just,” Y/n awkwardly gestured behind her, lost for words.
“Mind if I keep you company until then?”
He offered his hand to dance, and with a hesitant nod, she accepted.
/
The trip home was almost silent.
Y/n vaguely addressed why she was gone the whole night, and Richard said it was okay.
After a bit of a search, he’d realized she was with another guy and went off to dance with the other birds too. However, he didn’t know how things had… escalated with her and the man.
He asked if she would step out with him. He was mysterious and suave, and it was exhilarating. How could she say no? But when the nameless man pressed her against the brick alley, hands caressing her hips and waist, a sudden tsunami of uncertainty and panic crashed against her. He was nearing her lips, but the once sensual closeness had become suffocating- she couldn’t do this!
“Y/n, love?”
She blinked out of it.
“What’s wrong? You’ve been staring at the wall.”
Spewing the words before she could think them through, Y/n deadpanned, “Teach me how to kiss.”

HLO slinks in thru a bead curtain.......... truly sry this took me so long to concoct bt i’m here now, hand on hip, smiling coyly at u all...... i’m nai n i’m rly excited to b here so i’ll just dive right in!! u can find bradley’s pinterest board here n her muse tag here. like this or hmu for plots!
[ cis female, she/her, margaret qualley , twenty-four ] i can’t be sure, but i think i just saw BRADLEY MILLIGAN drive onto the parkway. don’t they know we’re not supposed to be driving on that haunted road right now? maybe it has to do with the fact that they’re so +RESILIENT and -VOLATILE that makes them feel UNPHASED about everything going on. i guess we could also chalk it up to the fact that they’re always reminding me of LEMON IN A FRESH CUT, THE AMBER BLINK OF AN ANGRY ALLEY CAT, GRINNING WITH BLOOD ON YOUR TEETH. either way, i hope they get back safely. [ nai, she/her, 24, gmt ]
aesthetics: singeing a hole in your fishnets with the cherry of a menthol, spitting a pistachio behind the bar just to hear it ping off the nozzle top bottles, lemon in a fresh cut, a war torn poppy standing alone in an empty field, pressing thumbs to yellow bruises, stomping over flowerbeds when there’s a path right besides it, dangling over ledges just to feel your chest jolt, a snarling rottweiler that needs muzzling, limp feet poking out behind a door, ‘I PROMISE I DON’T BITE’ scrawled on a name tag, slapping a bald head in front of you at the cinema like it’s a bongo, not owning a single jacket that isn’t stolen, driving a stranger’s car down the wrong lane against the screaming traffic, hair more feral than a wolf cub and eyes smudgier than a coal mine.
BACKGROUND:
ok SO. her father owns a strip club in crescent hill named no angels. it’s kind of.... a seedy establishment i won’t lie. hs a red glowing sign like it’s lighting up a window in amsterdam. cigarette butts floating in oil slick puddles outside. unsavoury characters crawling all over like rats in a sewer. despite this it’s a legitimate business on the surface of things n it does pretty well in trade. it’s like.... that place people warn u NOT to have ur bachelor party at unless u fancy urself the type tht willingly enters a lion’s den bt tht almost??? adds to the allure in a way??? ppl r like wow so sketchy it’s the thrill of a lifetime........ i mean run while u still can bt go off i guess
it isn’t Confirmed Public Knowledge bt it’s pretty heavily implied thru the rumour mill that bradley’s father is the head of a gang of rly............ Not Nice people. all the ppl that work for him u would hands down NOT want to run into in a dark alley. while things seem legitimate on the suface it’s pretty clear they’re into shady dealings n the townsfolk that suspect that would indeed b correct! the club’s a front for a drug business n they’re also washing n running counterfeit cash thru it. they probably also have their hands dipped into a few other local businesses to run their cash thru these too n keep it all seemingly by the books so nobody comes sniffing around. they even r friends with a member of local law enforcement that’s working w them for a cut so they honestly have all bases covered to keep things airtight n foolproof. perhaps a business in reed too which bradley oversees bt i haven’t given this Too Much thought as of yet??
so ya she’s grown up fairly local most of her life n would maybe be known around town as such.................. the milligans r certainly Interesting as far as families go so like. it honestly wldn’t surprise me if ppl nudge elbows when they see one of them coming n immediately walk in the opposite direction. just quite an intimidating presence...... they’re like caged animals where ur specifically instructed NOT to stick ur fingers between the bars bc they WILL bite
on a more personal note her dad is pretty much the worst human being alive n bradley hs like….. a lot of issues with herself as a result of years of toxicity n abuse
in terms of more family bkground info her mum’s name was alyssa n she vanished when bradley was 12. jst like…. into thin air. nothing. no note. zilch. gan! n when bradley asked her dad abt it his response was essentially “guess she didn’t love us enough to stay”. as bradley’s got older tho n become (without intention) more involved in the business side of things, it’s become pretty clear there was far more to the story.
(abuse tw) they had a horrible marriage n tony ws emotionally manipulative at the best of times, violent at worst, which didn’t help the fact tht alyssa ws struggling a lot w severe depression n rly just… not in the mindset to b dealing w anything else, even where motherhood ws concerned. bradley p much… would look after her a lot n they’d both b scared of her dad n it was just a whole unhealthy mess.
(death implied tw) anyway im rambling bt basically tony (bradley’s dad) gt wind of alyssa sleeping w men tht worked fr him n he just… got rid. bradley’s kind of worked out over the yrs tht her mum didn’t jst leave on her own accord n tht something must hav happened to her bt she’s too scared of her dad to ever directly accuse him
when her mum went all of her dad’s cruelty pretty mch got channelled straight onto her. it ws diluted between two before bt as u can probably imagine her upbringing was jst…. a steep downhill decline
(drugs implied tw) she learnt ways 2 deal w the incurring trauma bt they weren’t healthy ones at all! bsically jst. will do or take anything fr the distraction. chases a thrill like it’s the only way to remind her she’s alive. has absolutely no regard fr her own wellbeing n often gets other ppl in trouble too bc she’s so insatiably reckless
(hospitalisation tw) she hd….2 separate stints of psychiatric hospitalisation n she never tlks abt it. like ever. acknowledging she’s been vulnerable is her worst nightmare n bc of the way her dad raised her she always thinks any sign of struggling within herself is weakness. truly does…. not kno how to properly emotion
CUT TO!!!! the present. she’s currently living at the motel which is like. the least homely place she cld ever live rly but bradley loves making her life uncomfortable n doesn’t rly believe in growing sentimentally attached to anything if she cn help it <3 probably gets into arguments all the time w her neighbours it’s a whole thing.... atrocious at feeding herself has breakfasts frm the vending machine like her organs aren’t screaming fr vegetables.... plays music too loud n sometimes vanishes for days at a time without a word. she’s a lot.
i honestly feel like the murders haven’t rly phased bradley too hugely....... i won’t lie she probably genuinely is like. oh maybe it’s smthn to do w my dad. n just blinks the other way not rly that phased. on some subconscious level i think she rly just thinks........ death follows her wherever she goes n is like. this is just life for me! kind of depressing. holds her hand bt then screams n pulls away when she inevitably bites me.
PERSONALITY:
the kind of sour cherry only certain people have a taste for
once drank a bottle of whiskey, insisted she could still do a cartwheel and accidentally kicked an old man’s front tooth out in the process. proceeded 2 collapse into a flower bed and laugh so much abt it that she cried
barely takes anything seriously 50% of the time and is angry the other 50%
if she was a coffee she’d be black with five grains of sugar that you couldn’t taste until the last sip
(alcoholism tw) high functioning alcoholic. if u ever see her w a coffee cup u jst kno tht one sniff will confirm high alcohol percentage. honestly idk hw she does it her liver must b yellin
loyal to a point of fault. if she cares abt u (rare) and u murder a man in cold blood (not so rare in the broad scheme of bradley’s life) she’ll brawl anyone that says ur guilty
honestly wld probably fight a person over anything. sometimes she’ll jst be having a bad day n she’ll burst n take it out on whoever says the wrong thing. minefield!
has the worst luck in romance…. ever. ALL her past bfs hav been absolute beasts n as a result she has the ‘romance is dead n love is a lie’ mentality. definitely NOT a romantic. very cut n dry abt these things. sex is mostly just sex n she’d kind of scoff at anyone that wanted more from her
mostly wears stolen clothes from strangers and jackets that swamp her. huge chunky stomping boots with steel toe caps that would RLY bruise if they gave u a kick. hair is p much always a wild mess n she usually hs kind of smudgy/smoky makeup bcos apparently she’s allergic to combs and generally looking presentable… relatable content. the only time she rly looks put together is when she has to do something/go somewhere/see someone on behalf of her father....... he kind of uses her as a sort of. honey pot sometimes fr shit his gang get up to it’s like. not! a way u should ever utilise ur daughter but :/ i cannot stress enough how much i wna drop kick him in the neck
she’s v sarcastic. blunt. kind of has a habit of…. assessing a person n she’s quite perceptive bc she’s been trained to b by the way she always has to monitor her dad’s expression fr the slightest emotion change. she’s very confident n can p much mke a conversation out of whatever if she feels like it. independent too like she hs a bunch of (predominantly surface connection) friends bt she doesn’t care abt going out places alone n does this often. she’s probably kind of known around town bt itd b a 50/50 balance between bein known as intimidating n bein known as that one girl tht always gets into anarchy
likes: drunken snow angels that drag on so long they flirt with pneumonia, stealing cars, throwing watermelons off rooftops to watch them explode, shooting pedestrian’s with bb guns from hidden spots on rooftops.
dislikes: telling the truth, tulips so yellow it’s like they’re gloating, playing music loud enough to fry your brain and serve it on a piece of toast, going home.
PLOTS:
someone tht works at the ‘no angels’ strip club?? either as a dancer or bartender or whtever. just a forewarning it’s probably gna b a pretty….. seedy and Not That Pleasant environment bc it’s like. a crime hotspot inevitably bc it’s a gang hangout so. ur chara wld truly be in fr a rollercoaster ride to say the least
(drugs tw) she deals coke fr her dad’s gang so perhaps ur muse buys off her
anyone….. she’s brawled in the past like. she’s literally a menace i cnt express this enough. wil jst randomly throw a drink in someone’s face fr no reason bc she’s bored. she’s probably pissed off 1000 diff ppl in 1000 diff ways. the possibilities r endless n i jst think tht’s a sexy prospect!
fwbs perhaps??? exes??? (probably ws a tumultuous relationship honestly bradley is. a handful...... it’s also rly not often she ties herself down tbh so this would maybe have to b discussed/be circumstantial/kind of rare)
mayb someone tht she met at an aa meeting when she hd to go fr a court mandated thing one time after bein arrested fr public indecency. i feel like there’s probably a rly expensive statue somewhere thts fancily sculpted n she like. did a flying kick n broke the dick of it off n gt arrested fr it
ppl she……. Goes Wild Goes Crazy w. truly jst the most self destructive person alive so anyone w a similar mindset wld b a hellish bt fun combination
on the contrary a gd influence cld b nice perhaps? like someone tht genuinely cares abt her n she jst doesn’t kno hw to compute it
maybe people who r her neighbours that live at the motel too??
OH it could b fun if ur muse runs or works at a local business maybe like. a bar? idk? n bradley n ur muse have developed a rapport bc she frequents the place n is................ a Character
um. honestly the world’s our oyster. hmu n we cn brainstorm if none of tht catches ur eye!

A Test of Courage
A Test of Courage
A Banri x Kat fanfic
This is a self ship fic, uwa. Hope you like it! qwq
Focus was drawn to the tv screen as the competition occupies his attention. Well, most of it anyway. Banri’s brow furrowed, his eyes narrowing with a frustrated growl. Itaru on the other hand had a completely stone faced expression, magenta irises honed in on the fight as he won the match once again. The younger man let out a sigh of defeat, rubbing his temples in small circles.
“Dammit…” He muttered. Banri’s skills were rusted. Though they shouldn’t have been; he practiced fighting the character Itaru was good at with her, after all. What was causing him to feel so distracted? His mind was drifting all over the place to so many different thoughts, but it always went back to those smoky blue eyes - that rosy cheeked smile - and those wavy blond locks. The image left a lasting imprint, one that was shaking him to the core.
“Wow, your game was off today,” Of course Itaru noticed. “Alright, spill it. What’s going on?” And go figure he would want to know what’s on Banri's mind. This made the Autumn Troupe leader groan as he was trying to find good wording.
“It’s nothin’. Must be an off day for me.” Yeah, no kidding. He was just reiterating Itaru’s point. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to talk, it’s just that the words were escaping him. He didn’t wanna sound like a fool that wasn’t making any sense. Though right now, it felt like nothing was making sense to him. Why did he feel this way again?
“You like Kat a lot, don’t you?”
“Huh?” The brunette took a glance at the man sitting next to him.
“I think it’s pretty obvious at this point that you like her in a romantic sense. Your expressions seem so much more soft and doting around her. Plus, Kazunari said you two eat lunch together more often at class now.”
Shit. Banri’s cover was blown. Light brown strands were slicked back through his fingers as he tried not to keel over from the blatantly humiliating callout from Itaru. Now he remembered why he was so off today. It was Kat; She was all Banri could think about right now. He thought about playing it cool, feigning ignorance, but that wouldn't work. Not when Itaru knew him well enough to pick up on his mood just from his performance when gaming. A disgruntled sigh left slightly chapped lips, and Banri rested his chin in the palm of his hand.
"I don't know what it is about her, but-" He paused. "Whenever I'm near her lately, I kinda freeze up and I can feel my face getting warmer." Honestly, it pissed him off a little. He thought he sounded so stupid; getting this flustered around a girl he'd known for about a year now made him feel like some sort of protagonist from a romance anime. Even now, he felt his face rise in temperature, and he could deduce that his cheeks were definitely flushed. God, he felt so hopeless.
"Wow." A reaction that caught the young man off guard.
"The hell do you mean by that?" The question caused Itaru to chuckle, a smile decorating his face with mischief.
"Sounds to me like your life's not in super ultra easy mode anymore, am I right?"
The worst part was that Banri couldn't disagree.
"Ha ha, very funny Itaru," He replied in a mocking tone. "Though, I ain't gonna say that you're wrong. Cuz you're not."
"Well, if I'm not wrong, what's stopping you? Are you scared of rejection?"
"Ha! Scared of rejection? I'm Banri goddamn Settsu," He said that with a smile that so painfully indicated he was scared. "I can bet if I confessed to her right now, she'd be-"
"Banri, I know you're lying." That sentence… Why did it cut so deep? It shouldn't. It was true, of course, but the fact he wasn't able to get away with it made him feel like a deer in the headlights. An anxious pang in his chest only grew as Itaru continued.
"Just like always, you're afraid of losing. Typical Banri mannerisms for you, I guess."
"A'ight, ya don't have to rub it in, bastard…" Both men let out soft laughter. Though Banri's was born out of fear. It pulsed in his heart, every scenario in his head playing out with the worst possible outcome. These feelings of longing- of teenage anxiety- of a racing heartbeat and lovesick laughter- all of it was so foreign. So exciting. Yet all the same, incredibly terrifying.
"It's just… she's such a cool person, y'feel me?" Banri started. "I mean, she's smart, she's kind, and so freaking talented on stage. And whenever I see her smile and gush over something she loves, her face lights up and it's just so fuckin' cute." At that moment, he snickered, looking at Itaru eye to eye for the first time in that conversation. "And, shit, don't get me started on how her occasional moments where she gets a bit flighty and airheaded make me so damn happy. Like, she can be so mature and caring, but also a bit of a klutz who doesn't always think things through, but also super passionate and energetic, just-"
"Your perfect girl, right?" Banri nodded in agreement with Itaru's statement. In all senses, to Banri, Kat was perfect. Even with all the little flaws and quirks, like her occasional bursts of temper, the way her face flushed tomato red when embarrassed, it was all lovely to him. The two of them got along so well, but he remembered that it’d be likely she’d just like to be friends.
“I wanna tell her. I want her to know how much she makes me smile, man. I want her to know how god damn beautiful she is. But I don’t wanna make things awkward between us either, y’know?” This elicited a tired look from Itaru.
“Dude, it’s gonna be awkward within the first stages of dating anyhow. Better to tell her and at least get your feelings out and face rejection rather than keep going down this back and forth with yourself.”
“Well how the hell am I supposed to do that?!” The blonde shrugged.
“Meh, I dunno. Never dated anyone so I’m useless in that department.” That just turned Banri’s frustration into desperation.
“At least give me something, dude!” An eye roll from Itaru.
“Look, the best advice I can give is ask to talk to her and see where things go from there. Tell her how you feel about her. Y’know, regular confession stuff.”
“Guess that’s a start…” That unfortunately didn’t do much to settle the nerves from the realization that- oh no- he had to confess to the woman he’s slowly grown to pine for this past year and a half. This wasn’t going to be easy, he knew that for sure.
The next morning makes itself known to Banri from the sun’s rays tickling his face, and the absence of Juza’s snoring. It was the weekend, so he didn’t really have anything to do. Accept… he DID have something to do. Something he desperately didn’t want to do, but wanted to do at the exact same time. He could smell breakfast from his room. Pancakes and bacon. It distracted him from the nervous sensation in his stomach.
After a quick shower, he walks down the stairs, sleep still leaving him in a daze as he reaches the dining room. Pretty much everyone was here, save for Itaru and Masumi who were sleeping in. Kat was on the couch, sketchbook in her hands as she waited for Omi to finish breakfast. She looked up from the paper in Banri’s direction, and gave him a soft smile that melts him into a puddle of happiness.
“Morning, BanBan.” BanBan. A nickname she gave him that she used for some lighthearted fun. It caught him off guard, and he thought it was silly, but after a while, he really grew to love it. It was a nice little term of endearment to the both of them. Though mainly, she was too cute to say no to. Her laughter whenever she used it was enough to get him to laugh along from how infectious it was. Banri sat next to his fellow classmate, and gave a half smile in return.
“Mornin’ Kat. Good to see your face. Always brightens my mood.” A light giggle and a faint hint of blush on those already rosy red cheeks caught Banri’s attention.
“Aww, look at you being all sweet and charming today. Who are you, and what have you done with Banri?”
“Pfft, wow, rude.” The two of them laughed quietly so as to not disturb everyone else. Lord knows Sakyo would be up their asses for it later if they were too loud. “For the record, I’m nice and charming all the time. I’m Banri Settsu after all.” That got Kat to snort.
“Oh my god, that’s so corny, I love it.” Banri chuckled at that.
“Yeah, it was, my bad.” Then the fear returned. He could hear his heart beating like a hammer, and his hands quivered ever so slightly. “Hey uh… after breakfast, could I tell you somethin’ at the park?” Kat raised her brows inquisitively.
“Huh? Oh, sure!” On cue, Omi called everyone to the dining room. Breakfast was ready. Kat set down her drawing supplies, and made her way to the table, Banri following suit behind her. Today’s breakfast was simple, pancakes, bacon and hard boiled eggs. Kat smiled happily; they were some of her favorite things to eat for breakfast.  Banri sat across from her, the both of them eating in silence aside from occasionally joining in for small talk with others at the table. Though Banri had a hard time eating at all. The anxiety from what he would have to do later made his appetite seem smaller today. He excused himself after only finishing about half his plate, which surprised everyone at the table. He gave a quick tap to the young woman’s shoulder.
“Just meet me there, ok?” A nod accompanied by a hum of confirmation from Kat was Banri’s cue to leave. His shoulders tensed up as he left, putting on his shoes before starting a jog to the park. The whole time he ran, he could feel his resolve waver more than it already was. ‘What if it isn’t worth it? What if she’ll feel uncomfortable?’
‘What if we’ll never be the same after this?’
It scared him so bad. And it manifested into tears threatening to spill and pour down his cheeks. His mouth felt dry, his breath laboured as he sprinted frantically to the park, stopping in his tracks at the park’s fountain before it all broke loose. Choked sobs left him as he tried to catch his breath. His lip quivered as tears rolled down his cheeks. Banri tried to collect himself, wiping his eyes and nose, and steadying his shaky breath. This break in confidence made him feel so stupid. He felt ashamed for being so afraid. He felt even more stupid because he knew Kat would ask what’s wrong. He didn’t want her to worry. He wasn’t used to it. His parents never paid much attention; he was perfect at everything. Right now though, he was far from that supposed perfect man he was. He was vulnerable; he was second guessing himself. If Kat saw him like this - all clumsy and anxious over a confession - what would she think of him?
“Banri?” That voice made his heart sink. He felt like he was in such deep shit right now. His blood ran cold, but his face was red from crying.
“Banri, are okay? Oh god, were you crying?” Her worried tone made Banri feel so secure, but it was so odd to him. The young man wanted to brush it off, say it was nothing, but that was a lie he knew she’d see through. ‘Fuck it,’ He thought. ‘Might as well follow through on what you told yourself you were gonna do Banri.’
“Yeah, uh… I was.”
“What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
“Nah, nah. Well, I mean- I guess? I just- I dunno, I kinda got something on my mind and it’s really stressin’ me out.” A hand came to Banri’s back; a reassuring touch to let him know he was ok.
“Do you wanna talk about it? I’m always here for you, BanBan.” That smile that followed her words felt so warm and welcoming. And the way she said ‘BanBan’ was so different from any other time she said it. In most instances, it was used to joke around with him when they were messing around being idiots together. Here, it was affectionate, and born of concern for her friend’s well being. Somewhere in his heart, Banri felt it wasn’t ok to be open with her despite her reassuring he could tell her. But right now, he didn’t care about his worries. His brain was silently screaming at him right now to get it out, to just go for it even if you two just stay friends. That was ok with him. It may be a bit awkward for a while if she doesn’t reciprocate, but that wouldn’t change how much he liked spending time with her as a friend to begin with. Worries be damned, he supposed it was at least worth a shot.
“Yeah, thanks.” Deep breaths. In and out. “So, I’ve kinda debated back and forth since the last week or so whether or not I should tell you this, cuz I didn’t want to ruin our friendship. But I wanted to tell you how I feel about you, cuz I have a lot on my mind about a lot of stuff. Ever since we started hanging out over the past year, I’ve kinda started to feel really anxious around you. My heart races, my face gets all red and shit, and I start losing my words.  I really don’t wanna beat around the bush with this but I- I really like you. Like, romantically.”
Silence. It hung over for about a couple seconds, but to Banri it felt like a fucking eternity. At this point one could drop a pin and it would be heard that was how silent it was at that moment. But shock filled the young man’s sapphire eyes when Kat took his hand and held it. She cast a little glance, before looking away with a timid smile. She looked like a blushing bride. Banri didn’t know what to do he was so nauseous from the anxiety, but somehow, gently reciprocating the touch felt so natural and normal. Their eyes finally met, and Kat had a really goofy smile. It was lopsided, and one could tell she was happy but also really nervous. Her face was red, which was unsurprising given she’d get like that when she’d be caught singing by the other company members.
“Y’know, I uh… I’ve kinda wanted to tell you the exact same thing so I’m like, really happy right now.”
“Wait, really?” Kat nodded fervently.
“Yes! Y-Yes I- God, I’ve felt so scared too cuz I really didn’t wanna make things awkward between us if you didn’t feel the same way, But you’re just really fun to be around, you’re really handsome, and I love watching you act cuz you try super hard, and it makes me wanna try just as hard too! A-And I really wanna make you as happy as you make me, so… um…! Yeah, I-I really like you, like, a whole lot!”
Banri’s eyes widened in awe. Was this real? Was this a dream? He wasn’t sure, but a big smile spread across his face, and he started to laugh in relief.
“Holy shit, can I hug you please?” She nodded, and Banri hugged her so tight. He felt so happy. It may have been silly of him to cry tears of joy, but nonetheless he did. Just when he thought the tears had dried up, the euphoria made all the emotions rise up to the surface again. He pulled back to look at Kat, and she was crying too. Looks like she was just as scared as well. It made him feel a little better about everything. Banri tenderly brushed his thumb across her cheek, wiping away her tears.
“God, I knew you were adorable, but do you have to have such a cute smile?”
“What can I say? I guess I’m like your little ball of sunshine.”
“You’re damn right about that,” Banri placed a featherlight peck on the cheek. “I love you so much, Kat.”
“Love you too, Banri.”
Those words made him happy. So, so happy. Right now, time stood still. He wanted to stay like this. To stay close, in a warm embrace, pressing gentle, nervous kisses to each other’s lips. And right now, in this little moment, they would stay like this for at least half an hour. Banri vowed to himself, as they both stayed comfortable in that blanket of love, that he would make her so damn happy. Lucky for him, he was already well on his way.

Survey #321
i’m exploring the deepest recesses of tumblr to unearth super old surveys, so you can expect an onslaught of ‘em.
When someone is tailgating you, do you drive faster or slower? I drive the same speed, even though it makes me incredibly uncomfortable. What place outside of your own home do you spend the most time at? My sister's place. Have you ever been snorkeling? No. Do most of your relatives live in the same state/province as you? No; only my parents and immediate sisters live here. Have you ever participated in a medical study? No. Is there a food you hate that everyone else seems to like? Especially where I live, fried chicken. It's disgusting. Have you ever had to evacuate from a natural disaster? No. Do you have any family members who are cancer survivors? Numerous, actually. Do you have any licenses other than your driver's license? I don't even have a driver's license, never mind anything else. What job does you significant other have? I’m single. When you were in elementary school, what was a typical afternoon like once you got home from school? I did my homework right away; well, after having a snack. After that, I was most likely on the computer playing Neopets or Webkinz, or something on the PlayStation. Is your favorite movie part of a series? Yes. Have you ever played in a water puddle? Sure, as a kid. I loved that. Have you ever played in a mud puddle? I don't think so. Have you ever kissed someone (outside) in the rain? Yes. He did it purely to be romantic, lol. Have you ever lost control of your car in the rain? No, thank fuck. Have you ever had to attend summer school? No. Have you ever experienced a summer where the temperature exceeded 120'F/49'C? Yikes, no, not that high. The highest we usually get is below 110. Do you live in a hot or cold (normally) climate? Hot. It sucks. Has your community ever had a “smog alert”? No. Have you ever raked leaves, and then played in them? Oh, absolutely as a kid. Dad would rake a pile just for us kids. Have they ever cancelled school because it was too hot? At least once, yes. Have you ever had to shovel snow? No. Have you ever experienced “cat’s breath”, where the wind was so powerful it took your breath away, literally? Yep, especially when I visited Sara and we went on a walk. It was fucking outrageous. Safe to say I didn't last long on that walk. Has your/or have you been in a car that was stuck in a snowstorm? No. What does your MySpace profile look like? I haven't seen it since that site was still "a thing." I do remember, however, that it was COVERED in meerkats, haha. Pictures, facts, etc. And my page song was "Pocketful of Sunshine" by Natasha Beddingfield lmao. Do you like living in the country or city better? Country, 100%. I'm not a city gal by any means. Do you have a big backyard? No, it's very small. Not used to that at all. What is your favorite Adam Sandler movie? I don't know, he's in too many to choose lmao. What was the last thing that surprised you? Apparently a rocket crashed today after launch. What color hair did your first crush have? Brown. Have you ever visited your state’s capitol building? No. I... didn't even know those existed lmao I feel dumb. Who was the last person that said something that warmed your heart? I'm not sure, but I'm quite certain my niece or nephew would be involved there, haha. What is your favorite park? I don't have one. Have you ever felt an earthquake? No. Do you believe anyone is asexual? ???????????? Yes???????????? Were you abused? No. Have you ever missed a deadline? Yeah. Can you tell Mary-Kate and Ashley apart in pictures? I haven't seen them in an eternity, idk. Describe your fondest memory: I don't really want to... but I'll entertain the question. It's hard to choose, and they just about all include Jason. I think what I hold closest though was our dance to "Stairway to Heaven" after prom in the headlights of his car in my front yard. It's something that physically hurts to remember. What song makes you cry every time you hear it? Let's set aside my "trigger songs" for this. "Terrible Things" by Mayday Parade does it very easily. How often do you break your promises? I almost never do. I don't bullshit around with promises. I've only ever broken ones I'd forgotten I'd made, if my memory serves me right. How long do you take in the shower, on average? Not even 10 minutes. Do you have your MySpace/Facebook profile set to a "friends only" setting? Yes. Did your last kiss mean anything? Why or why not? Of course it did. I care very, very deeply for her. Are your summers usually boring and relaxing, or busy and interesting? "Summers are hot and miserable." <<<< mood Tell me a crazy thing you did as a child. I don't really think I did anything "crazy" as a child, just weird. Like pretending to be a father penguin arranging rocks to mock a nest. I was fuckin weird. How many best friends do you have? One. When you’re upset, who do you wanna talk to the most? Either Sara, Mom, or nobody. Opinion on Daughtry? They're nice. "No Surprise" is positively beautiful. Do you like country music? Noooooo. What’s been the most awkward situation you've been in? Okay, possible TMI. Basically, Jason's parents arrived home way, way earlier than they were supposed to and my panicky ass couldn't find my clothes quickly, and when I finally did, I had to dress as quickly as possible in his tiny-ass closet while he distracted his mom and dad lmfao. I'ma just say it was a very close call to me melting into a mortified puddle. I look back on it and laugh now, but the absolute, throbbing fear I felt was NOT funny back then lmfao. Don’t you love that feeling when you look at someone and you just melt? <3 That is genuinely one of the best feelings in the entire world. Do you prefer male or female singers? I have no preference. So what are you planning for this summer? Nothing, really... Who knows where the Covid situation will be then. What’s a good book? In general for absolutely anyone, Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. It is a book about pacifism that is so very deep and emotional. For women, I highly recommend The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. As a woman myself, the concept of the book is terrifying, to be reduced to reproduction machines without rights, so it's something you can really feel as a female. It's a book that definitely makes you want to fight for women's rights. Is it awkward for you when your parents talk to you about boys etc… No. I'm a grown woman. Now if she asked about my sex life (if I had one), I'd feel a bit weird, but not very. Do you like it when guys play with your hair? Yeah. Ever cried when you had to say goodbye to someone? Well of course. Over multiple people. Have your parents ever hated one of your boyfriends/girlfriends? No. Have you ever dreamt of someone you barely know? Indeed. Do you have a blood donor’s card? Yep. Have you ever taken a pregnancy test? I had to before surgery. Has anyone seen you naked in the last week? No. What kind of doctor did you go to the last time you went? It was via phone, but I talked with my psychiatrist a few days ago. Does your ex still think about you? I'm sure Sara and Girt do, as they're my good friends, but idk if either think of me romantically. I would hope Jason at least remembers me with some degree of care in his heart... As for Juan, Aaron, and Tyler, idk if they do and I don't really care. What has been bothering you a lot lately? My weight. Are you trustworthy? I think so, yes. Did your parents teach that white lies were ok? Yeah, but it definitely depends on the situation. Which literary character would you dress up as, if you had to choose one? Speaking of The Handmaid's Tale, for Halloween one year, I really, really want to take some cool photos of me dressed as a handmaid with a (obviously fake) blood splatter over my stomach. What (or who) is the best thing that ever happened to you? Being born with the mom I have, probably. I have no idea. None. Of where I'd be without her. Do you miss college? Sigh, sometimes... but I'm not going back. No chance. Dropping out three times due to my mental state hints at a clear pattern. Have you ever called a teacher “mom”? Yeah, accidentally. Except with my physical science teacher in HS that eventually became my "other mom" and most recently our landlord, even. I call her "Mama" sometimes. What was the name of your first imaginary friend? It was a wolf whose name I don't remember. What color was your nursery when you were a baby? No clue. What is your favorite arcade game? I desperately wanna go to a location that has Silent Hill: The Arcade. :/ That's on my bucket list. It's very rare. Are you allergic to grass? No. Do you remember to water plants? I don’t have any plants to water. What is your favorite fall drink? I don't drink any "fall" drinks. Favorite winter drink? Hot chocolate! Favorite spring drink? There are "spring" drinks? Favorite summer drink? Gimme a nice, cold margarita. Name three creative people you know. Sara, Tez, and Mini are some of the most creative people I've ever written with. Name 3 YouTubers you aspire to be like. Mark in like a million different ways, I look up greatly to Jeffree Star's work ethic (say what you will about him personally, but holy shit does mama WORK), and Emzotic for her incredible growth after trauma that's left her more confident than ever, and she's amazing with animals and just a darling overall. Does anyone know who your current crush is? Yeah, I'm pretty open about it. Have you ever been scammed? Not successfully, no. Which song describes your life? I relate to "Get Up" by Mother Mother a lot at this point in my life. If someone dislikes you, what is most likely to be the reason? Probably because I open up so slowly/am very secretive of myself when someone might be trying to get close. People have also criticized my laziness. Where did you meet the last person you swapped numbers with? YouTube. At least I think Tez was the last person I gave my number to. Who was the last person to add you as a friend on Facebook? Hunter, my neighbor growing up. Who was the last person that asked if you were okay? My therapist. I had to leave group due to severe abdominal cramping. It was just my period, but he just wanted to check. What was the last thing you bought from a vending machine? Probably a soda back when I was still in school. Has anyone given you butterflies recently? Actually yeah; I had a memory of Sara that caused 'em to revisit me. What was the name of the first person you ever had a crush on? Why did you like them? I'm going to exclude my puppy-dog crush (Dylan) and talk about my first "real" crush, Sebastian. I liked him because we had very similar interests, he was really friendly, nice, and funny, and he clearly trusted me a lot because he actually confided in me regarding the relationship he was in that was struggling and causing him a lot of pain. I thought he was attractive, too. Ngl, I wonder sometimes where we could have gone if he hadn't been dating the girl, because I'm 90% sure he was into me, too. In current times, he very recently got engaged! Super happy for him. Which parent do you identify with the most? My ma. What do you think you cook or bake the best? Scrambled eggs, I guess. That's just about all I CAN make, haha. My family likes 'em. I always use American cheese, salt, pepper, and a bit of hot sauce. What embarrasses you the most in front of other people? Admitting I RP. If you had to choose one thing you were most passionate about, what would it be and why? Of actually important things, gay rights. If we're talkin' passionate about anything, then the answer's meerkats, duh. Who are you most envious of—real or fictional—and why? A rival photographer that lives here. I absolutely hate admitting that, but yeah, I'm extremely envious of her. She gets way more traffic than I do by a long shot, even though I, from a completely modest and honest standpoint, genuinely think I do better work than her. It's just frustrating. All about who you know in this business. How old is the most expired item in your fridge? Supposedly our milk expired on the 1st, but it smells just fine? And mind you, I am very cautious with expiration dates, and I've found milk typically starts to smell bad a few days earlier than the date to me. This jug is an outlier. What are your favorite style of underwear? I'm a fat old lady that likes high-waisted underwear. What’s the saddest song you’ve ever heard? Maybe "The Ballad of Dwight Fry" by Alice Cooper. I could name tons, though. How about the sweetest song? Maybe "Easy to Love You" by Theory of a Deadman. Another song I struggle to listen to because it was one of mine and Jason's "songs." Do you know how to play dominoes? No. Are you proud of what you’re doing with your heart and time right now? Not in the least. Why or why not? I'm just wasting time. Doing nothing with true meaning, and I seem unable to get over this low point I'm in. How many bones have you broken? One. Well, I was told "fractured," but apparently that's the same thing as broken? Have you ever won anything? Big or small? Yeah, multiple things. What food will you absolutely not, under any circumstances, eat? Animals like cats or dogs. Pets, basically. I would feel WAY too weird. Has anything/anyone every saved your life before? Yes. What is one thing you’re embarrassed to admit you want to try? If I'm embarrassed by it, why would I share it with whoever reads these? What is the most important memory you have and why? When I decided it was truly time to move on from Jason. Why that's my most important is obvious: it changed my mindset and life in general. Is there something you wish you had said sorry for but never did? God, I hope Jason read my apology email I last sent him. I finally accepted I did wrong, too, and I want to know that he knows that. Who was the last person you know to have a birthday? My youngest niece's first birthday was mid-February. What’s a musical instrument you think sounds really beautiful? The violin. Do you play that instrument? I wish I could. Do you have a favorite type of pasta? (like a shape of noodles, not dish) Just spaghetti noodles, ig. How many times a day do you brush your teeth? Once. Who sent the last e-mail you got? My PHP therapist sent me the Zoom link to our group session. Do you have a favorite shape? Out of basic ones, circles. What’s the last song you bought/downloaded? I don't recall. Probably something by 3TEETH. Have you ever been on a trapeze? Hell nah. Do you buy chocolate after Valentine’s Day when it goes on sale? No. Do you personally know anyone who is an author? I met a poet at the psych hospital once. I also have an old friend who had something published in a magazine, I think. Do you own a polaroid camera? No, but I'd love to to take more ~aesthetic~ photographs sometimes. What is something you think is underrated? Snakes! :( They're not scary or gross, nor do they in any way deserve to be killed. I wish the worth of snakes was seen much more clearly. They are spectacular, intriguing animals. Around what temperature do you consider it to be too hot outside? Once it hits like 65*F, I'm starting to feel uncomfortable. In what ways do you expect your life to be different one year from now? I hope beyond hope that I have a job I enjoy. And that I'm driving again. What’s a hobby you used to have, but don’t anymore? I used to loooove video editing, but I've lost all motivation for it. Do you have any exercise equipment in your home? Somewhere we have this one stretchy thing that I have no idea what it's called, then there are two sets of small weights somewhere. Where is the farthest north you’ve traveled to? New York. Farthest south? Florida. East? Well, ya can't go more east in NC unless you want to drive into the ocean... lol. West? Illinois. If you have/want children, will you raise them similar to the way you were raised? If I had kids, I would in some ways, but in a lot of other ways, no. Do you have any unusual decorations in your home? Nothing strange, no. What is the highest level math class you’ve completed? I don't know. Not very high. Do you have an ebook reader? (iPad, Kindle, etc.) No. What kind of natural disaster is most common where you live? Hurricanes. Have you ever had an animal get into your attic? No. When was the last time you started a “new chapter” of your life? 2017, ig. What is the last random act of kindness you did? I guess you could consider a loving text to Sara a random act of kindness?

How Remus Started Working For Patton: Part 5
Masterpost
Tw: Remus being Remus/Swearing/Drug Mention/Drinking Coffee
While it took some getting used to, Remus was immensely pleased at his newfound membership to the Anacondas.
Not ONLY did he have another person to annoy the shit out of daily (this position was held by Dee and Virgil exclusively, as well as his brother), but he also was able to pop by and bring Pat on his adventures so he could feel that fuzzy sensation in his chest.
Ree still couldn't determine why he felt that way, but he supposed it was because Pat would listen to him ramble without telling him that it was stupid.
Or maybe it was because he was pretty? He was remarkably attractive, whether in a skirt or in a pair of jeans, and his hair seemed softer than even that dead rabbit Virgil dared him to touch once. Whether that was because the rabbit was dead or because Patton was Patton, it didn't matter. But even then, Remus had met plenty of attractive people! And he didn't usually have this reaction, at least, not one this soft.
Maybe it was the danger? Pat was part of a crime organization. Remus always did like the danger of doing things most people saw as dangerous or scandalous, but it didn't feel particularly high stakes yet. The most risky encounter they had was that damned seagull chasing after them. (Remus was going to kill that bird one of these days...)
He supposed he'd have to ask his brother. Grosssssss. Remus hated asking his brother for advice, it always was some fairytale crap or something similar. But, as Virgil wasn't home, and he was NOT going to ask Patton (that would be embarrassing), Dee (they're brothers) or Logan (he's not too good at emotions), he had no other choice.
So that's why he was standing on the balcony of Roman's apartment, hair full of leaves, sighing for what seemed like the twentieth time as Roman continued to not notice him.
"Oh brother dorkest!~ It is me, your evil twin! Get your gay ass out here!"
That seemed to do the trick, well, to some degree. It at least made Roman jump, turning his head to look through the window at him.
Not too long after, it also caused him to finally open the window! Spectacular.
"Remus you know I have a front door."
"Oh but it's just so much more fun to see your reaction when I use unconventional means! Remember when I used your vent system?"
"Yeah, and you nearly fell through it. To what do I owe the displeasure of a meeting with you?" Despite his words, Roman was clearly biting back a smile.
Hopping through the open frame, Remus began to pace around the apartment, leaving a trail of leaves in his wake. It had been windy outside, he couldn't help it!
"I am facing an emotional dilemma!"
"Dilemma? Who taught you these fancy words? Where is my real brother???" Roman crossed his arms where he stood, leaning up against the wall in amusement.
"Oh shut your butt. Seriously though, I am facing problems and all my other friends are unable to help at this time."
"That's a first."
Remus ran a hand through his hair, wishing he had put a braid in it or something. Normally he'd be fine with it full of leaves, he'd had worse, but right now he was on edge and he'd prefer if there wasn't the crinkly sound every time he moved. "Its with this guy dipshit! This guy that for whatever reason I cannot understand why he enjoys my presence."
With that statement, Roman's demeanor changed drastically. Making his way over to his brother, he sat him down on the couch. "This seems like a problem in which we'll need some coffee. You still like yours the same?"
Ree simply nodded, still stewing over his emotions.
His brother came back holding two mugs, one that was coffee only in name, and the other that was some amalgamation of cream cheese, sriracha sauce, and hot fudge.
He handed the abomination to Remus, sipping his own. "Ok spill."
"So a few weeks back, I met this guy. And I thought it would be like all my other flings ya know? Chill, not much expectations, and ending after about a week. But this guy is just, pure sunshine. He and I flirt a bit, and he's pretty cuddly but as far as I can tell he sees me as a friend. But I don't know how I see him, because whenever I'm around him I get this dizzy feeling and it's like being drunk and taking hallucinogenics at the same time??"
"Ah so you're in love with him!!!"
Remus nearly spit out his drink at how sudden it was. "Excuse me??"
"You're in love!!!"
"That's ridiculous! I don't do that! The most I have is a one night stand! A fling if I'm particularly bored! I don't do 'in love' my dearest bother." Making air quotes with his free hand, he continued sipping his drink, if you could call it that.
Seriously. What was even in it??? It looked disgusting! But for some reason Remus kept drinking it??? What a madman.
"Well, tell me about this guy then."
"What???"
"For curiosity's sake! It's been so long since I've had a relationship so I'm projecting to yours."
"Haven't gotten laid recently?" Remus wiggled his eyebrows, knocking elbows with him to see if he'd spill his drink.
"Ugh!! Vulgar, he'd at least have to buy me dinner first." Ro swiped his mug away before the mountain of whipped cream was disturbed, frowning. "But seriously! What's this guy like?"
"If you want the basic description, he's cute as fuck. If you want the less basic description, he's quite possibly the only guy who I would want to slow dance with since...collage at least."
"Wow, slow dancing??"
"I KNOW right??? He's got these pretty-ass eyes and whenever I look into them I just melt and he's so soft that when he hugs me I'm just a puddle of blood and guts on the floor and I'd let him tear the heart from my chest if he asked."
"Wow. That's...that is a crush. That my dear brother, is a crush!"
"Ugh shut up. So what's up with your life right now? Make any new musicals?"
Roman's face lit up, and then dimmed almost immediately after. He didn't meet Ree's eyes as he spoke, slowly stirring his drink. "Well..."
"Well what?"
"I did, but it was rejected again."
"That's bullshit! Your scripts are amazing! Even if they lack the blood and gore, they're some of the best pieces I've ever read! That cock of a publishing company should be begging for your works!"
"It's really not that big of a deal...they were unpolished anyways."
"I'm going to commit arson soon enough."
"Remus no! I'll just try some of the other publishers. I'll have to work twice as hard, but maybe one of them will like it..."
As Remus looked at his brother, he noticed the dark circles under his eyes and how his body curled into itself, as if it was barely staying together.
"Dipshit...you haven't been sleeping well huh?"
A shake of his head was all Remus needed to set both of their mugs down on the coffee table, lifting up his brother. "You need a break. I don't trust you not to work yourself to death."
"Remus no, I have to get working on the next-"
"Nope! I'm taking you to my pal's place. He'll watch after you. I'm going to work soon, so I'd do it myself, but he's second best."
"Please tell me you aren't leaving me at a bar."
"Nope! Logan doesn't drink. Says it messes with his brain's 'structural integrity' or something."
Roman, used to his antics, simply wrapped his arms around Remus, leaning into him as he grumbled something he couldn't hear.
"Don't worry, I'll grab your keys so you can get back in. He's nice I swear!"
"If I end up dead in an alley I'm haunting you."
"Virgil would hate that. He already thinks we have ghosts in our apartment, you'd be the final straw before he buys an ouija board."
They talked quietly as Remus grabbed some of Roman's important stuff, then heading out. Thankfully, no one bothered them on the walk over, and Remus didn't have much problem knocking on the stained door of Logan's place, which, in his words, 'serves as my workplace as well as my domicile so Remus kindly stop bothering my cat.'
"Hey Locoooooooooo!"
There was banging from inside as his only answer unfortunately, so Remus assumed that he was in his lab.
Time to let himself in! Roman had fallen asleep on his shoulder by now, so he couldn't set him down to crawl through a window. Crap. Might as well use the keys then.
Maneuvering his grip, he managed to grab them from his pocket, stepping in. Entropy, who was sitting on her cat tower, merely blinked at him before hopping off, most likely to go find Logan.
"Lo-comotive!"
"Remus I swear if your roommate threw you out again because you messed with a skunk-"
Ah! There he was. He must have been working with one of his machines again, when he came out to greet him, he was wearing his metal-working mask. "Hi Logie!~"
"Hello Remus. Why does it appear as if you're carrying a dead body?"
"This is my brother! I told you about him before. He needs someone to watch after him so he actually rests for once in his goddamned life."
Roman, who had awoken by now from all the noise, struggled to get out of Remus's arms. "I'm not a child-"
"I can't watch him right now since I have to go work at Hell Incorporated-" He made a face, disgusted at even the mention of his office job, "-so I thought you could?"
Logan turned up his mask, looking closer at Roman, his face...red? Wait what? It was probably because the machine tended to get hot. Or...
"Remus, you want me to nanny your twin brother?"
"Yep! He's an incorrigible little menace that won't sleep unless you force him to or he passes out from exhaustion."
"This is a grown man we are discussing?"
Piping up from his struggle to get down, Roman turned to look at Logan. "Exactl-"
His intended speech cut off as he locked eyes, exhaling a little bit at the sight. "oh."
Glancing between the two of them, Remus noticed the redness on both of their cheeks, and wanting to see none of whatever stirred up his brother, simply pushed him into Logan's twig arms. "I'll be back soon!"
Both turned to look at him, startled looks on both their faces.
"Remus!"
He was already out the door, snickering.

The Next Best Thing Chapter 15
Catalina arrives early, when they’re still finishing the last of the birthday pancakes.
Anna is spreading Nutella with a surgeon's precision to ensure it covers her pancake right to the edges; Anne is running her fingers through a maple syrup puddle on the table and licking them. Baby Catherine is chewing on a bit of plain pancake in her highchair and Mary is putting the pan in the dishwasher.
She’s only eating the strawberries but she aims a cuff at Anne when Anne asks if it’s because she’s on another diet and tells her to mind her own business.
Anne subsides with a giggle and steals a spoonful of Nutella straight from the jar, whispering that Mary couldn’t fit into her new jeans when she tried them on last weekend. Mary’s face goes redder than the strawberries and she looks crosser than ever- but they’re interrupted by the doorbell.
Cathy abandons her own pancake-face (with a Father Christmas beard of snowy white whipped cream- it looks excellent even though she’s not really that fond of the taste of whipped cream) when she hears Catalina’s voice in the hall doing the boring grown up Garden’s looking lovely, traffic, parking, price of petrol stuff that all grown ups seem incapable of not saying when they meet each other.
(She’s glad that when she sees Anne and her other friends, they can just jump right into talking about interesting things like books and television and whether rubbing two jelly aliens together and putting them in the freezer makes then make a tiny alien baby, and is it murder if your tamagotchi dies because you weren’t allowed to get down from Sunday Lunch to feed it, and is it true that if you swallow chewing gum, it ties up your stomach and kills you, and how it is that the chocolate in the bottom of a Cornetto manages to taste so much nicer than normal chocolate, and why is it that sharpening your pencil is boringboringboring when you’re in the middle of drawing a picture but really satisfying and fun when it means you get to stop doing handwriting practise to do it, and is it true that there was a boy in Year Four who stuck his whole finger into the teachers special electric pencil sharpener on a dare and had the tip of his finger sharpened away to nothing?)
She doesn’t quite have the courage to interrupt- but when Catalina sees her hovering in the doorway, she interrupts herself and stops agreeing with Anne’s Mum that the price of petrol is extortionate nowadays and gives Cathy such a big hug it lifts her right off her feet.
‘Mija!’
She lets herself cling tight for a moment and then lets go- she isn’t a baby after all, although there’s a little bit of her that wishes she was Kitty’s age so she could be picked up and cuddled properly.
‘How are you?’
She nods. ‘I’m ok.’
Anne’s Mum does a bit lipsticky smile like a lady in an advert and asks if she slept well and she nods again. ‘Yes thank you.’
She hopes Catalina has mostly forgotten last night and doesn’t bring it up to Anne’s Mum.
(She knows grown ups can be so sneaky like that sometimes, sharing your secret things with one another and pretending they’re doing it for your own good.)
She especially hopes that Anna won’t say anything- she hasn't yet but you never know, and even though Cathy doesnt think she’d say anything on purpose, she might just by mistake. She can’t even ask Anna to keep quiet because then Anne will hear and want to know what it is that Anna is meant to keep quiet about.
And Anne is terrible with secrets.
Not with keeping them, she’s actually very very good at withstanding all sorts of secret-spilling torture, even Chinese Burns, but with wanting to know other people’s. Once she knows them, she’s always perfectly happy to not tell anyone else, on pain of death- but Cathy still doesn't want to have to explain everything about last night to Anne. She doesn’t want Anne to think that she didn’t enjoy her birthday after all.
Anne’s Mum says that Catalina would be welcome to stay for a cup of coffee- or a Cappuccino or an Afogato even- but that the Photographer will be arriving soon. She says the word like photographer should have a capital letter.
Anne bobs up out of nowhere, licking Nutella from her fingers and asking what photographer and can’t Cathy and Anna stay to play a bit longer.
Anne’s Mum hisses at her not to be silly, of course they can't stay and of course Anne knows who the photographer is, she’s told her all about it.
‘It’s for the birthday photoshoot.’ She adds to Catalina and Catalina nods politely and says it sounds lovely.
‘But it's not my birthday.’
‘Well, it'll be like a second birthday.’ Anne’s Mum’s smile is still there but it’s looking a bit forced now.
Anne seems to perk up a bit at the idea of a second birthday, and Cathy is just wondering if she’ll be allowed to have two birthdays two if this is now a Thing, when Anne pauses.
‘But then Cathy and Anna have to stay or it won't be a proper party!’
Anne’s Mum gives an impatient little sigh. ‘Of course it isn't a proper party! I do wish you'd listen- it's a photoshoot, like I said.’
‘But you just said it was my second birthday!’
‘For goodness sake Anne! I shouldn't have to explain every little thing to you- you’re eight now, you're not a baby!’
Anne scowls.
‘You’re going to say goodbye to Cathy nicely and then go and have a shower so you can be ready…. With any luck, your friend’s parents will be here soon too before the other children get here.’
Cathy wonders if Anne’s Mum has forgotten Anna’s name.
‘But if there are other children anyway, why can't I have Anna and Cathy?’
‘Well it's only fair!’ The smile falters and is hurriedly replaced. ‘They’ve come to the sleepover so we thought it would be nice to spread things around a bit and let your other friends be part of the photoshoot!’
It’s uncomfortable and horrible listening to Anne get scolded: it feels like there is something sad and grey making the air heavier.
Anne’s mum is scowling like she’s really really annoyed and she’s so glad that Catalina is not like Anne’s Mum and doesn't get cross when she asks questions- she knows if she was suddenly told she was having a photoshoot, she’d be asking even more questions than Anne.
Actually, she’s glad Catalina is not like Anne’s Mum, full stop.
‘Which other friends?’
Cathy wonders if maybe Anne has got some other girls from their class coming to play once she and Anna are gone, and it’s not a nice thought, but then Anne’s Mum starts saying names and she doesn’t recognise any of them.
‘-and Ingrid and Patience and Harriet-’
‘But I don't like them!’
‘Of course you do!’
Anne does an experimental single stamp of her foot; it’s like a challenge. ‘I hate them-’
They don’t hear the rest, because at that moment, Anna comes into the hall, looking confused at all the commotion, and Anne’s Mum sighs and seizes Anne by the wrist and tugs her further down the hall.
It’s all a bit awkward. Catalina is asking Anna how she is and if she had a nice time at the sleepover but she can’t listen properly, because really, all she can pay attention to is the cross sound of Anne’s Mum’s voice as she hisses things in Anne’s ear while she Anne squirms and whines and tries to pull away.
When they come back, Anne has stopped arguing.
‘What do we say?’
 ‘Thank you for coming, Cathy.’
She hates how Anne looks now, all sad and crumpled and flat. It's not at all how you should look on your birthday (or even the day after your birthday) and she has to hang onto Catalina’s hand tightly to stop her stomach from squeezing uncomfortably.
She can only manage a little ‘Thank you for inviting me’ in response, which doesn’t really feel like a good enough response considering it was her first sleepover ever, but Catalina squeezes her hand and then smiles warmly at Anne.
‘I hope you had a lovely birthday, carino. A photoshoot sounds like it will be lots of fun- im sure Cathy will be very excited to hear about it on Monday. I'm certainly interested in hearing about it!’
(She might be annoyed, at any other time, at Catalina calling Anne one of the names that’s really just for her- but she isn’t now. She just wants Anne to go back to looking normal and happy like she usually does.)
Catalina squeezes Cathy's hand again, and bit more firmly this time and she realises she’s meant to add something.
‘It'll be like being a celebrity…’ She’s not sure if she sounds very convincing so she tries harder. ‘You’re so lucky, Anne! Everyone at school will be so jealous!’
Anne’s Mum gives an approving nod and beams at her, and she turns her head so she doesn’t have to see it. Anne gives a very small reluctant smile. She doesn't say anything but she looks a tiny bit more cheerful as she goes up to shower, Anna trailing behind her.
They say another goodbye and thank you to Anne’s Mum and then they’re out onto the pavement.
She’s still holding onto Catalina’s hand but Catalina doesn’t seem to mind, she swings their joined hands between them.
‘So how was the sleepover? Did you have a lovely time mija?’
She nods.
‘What did you do? Did Anne like her present?’
‘She loved it. She said it was her second best favourite present.’
‘What was her first?’
Cathy describes the heelies and Catalina laughs. ‘Thank goodness! I was going to ask if you girls had had a fight, to get those bruises-’
Cathy twists her arm and notices for the first time the purply blue bruises blooming.
‘It’s ok, they don’t hurt. I only fell over a bit. Anne fell over much more but that’s because she was trying to do a jump like the ice skaters on tv.’
‘Well I'm glad she liked her presents so much. Poor little thing.’
(Cathy isn’t sure why Catalina calls Anne poor- everyone at school, even the teachers, know that Anne’s parents have more money than sense. This means they’re rich.)
‘Anna thought my present was really good too. She said her present was really boring next to mine and she’d have to think up something more interesting next time.’
‘What did she get Anne?’
‘Jewelry making set. You can make earrings that you can wear even if you don’t have pierced ears.’ She hopscotches along the paving stones- it doesn’t really work like proper hopscotch though because they’re too close together. ‘Although Anna has her ears pierced already.’
(She’s a tiny bit jealous of Anna’s tiny gold studs- they look very cool. They’re not enough to make her want holes punched in her ears though, even the thought makes her feel a bit sick. Anne thinks she’s silly- she’d LOVE to have her ears pierced.
She’s not allowed though, because ear piercings are one of the few things Anne’s Mum and Jane agree on, albeit for different reasons: Jane thinks Anne is much too young, Anne’s Mum says it’ll make her look common.
Anne doesn’t think she’s too young, and she says that she doesn’t care about looking common because she wants to look cool...but neither Jane nor her Mum will budge.)
‘Did Anne like it?’
‘I think she did. She said that we could all make jewelry for the Inca Princess next time Anna and I came over to play. And then Anna cheered up a bit. I think she was worried Anne wouldn't like her present.’
Cathy doesn't feel like saying that she was also worried Anne wouldn't like her present. It feels funny also to be talking about Anna and not talking about the night before….but hopefully, it maybe means that Catalina has forgotten all about it.
She doesn’t bring it up on the walk home anyway- Catalina listens with great interest to an edited version of the story of the little attic girl, giving very appreciative gasps in all the right places and not interrupting even once to ask silly questions about whether or not the little girl has a swimming pool.
‘That was an excellent story mija.’
‘Really?’ Catalina looks like she means it.
‘Wonderful- very imaginative. Makes me glad we don’t have an attic!’
Cathy giggles. ‘Anne said the little attic girl would come to my attic tonight and I reminded her that we didn’t have one and she said that next time, she was going to make up a story about a little girl who lived in a flat. Anna said it didn’t sound very scary.’
‘I suppose you’ll have to wait to hear it to know if it is or not.’
‘Anna said I should make up another story for next time.’
‘Well, I hope you’ll tell me if you think any more up, I’d love to hear them.’
‘Ok.’ Perhaps she’ll make up a story specially for Catalina- a special grown up story that has grown up things in it, like when they play Soap Opera in the playground and everyone plays that they’re having cancer and babies and cocktails. ‘It might be scary though.’
‘That's ok, mija. You have to let the muses guide you when you’re creating.’
Cathy knows all about the muses already- they’re spirity things that give you ideas and imagination when you’re doing art or writing, they’re what Catalina blames when she’s having trouble phrasing an idea for work.
(Not only are the muses very friendly to Artists of All Kinds, they are actually rather useful when it comes to the resultant mess of artistic endeavour.
Catalina introduced her to the concept on The Muses on her second week, the first time she’d tried painting in her new bedroom and coincidently the first time she’d made any actual serious mess there.
It hadn’t been her fault that the paint had spilled like it did and it hadn’t spilled much, but it had been enough to make her ponder what it would be like to see her godmother Properly Angry.
She hadn’t, until that moment, considered what a Properly Angry Catalina would look like. As she thought about it- and it wasn’t a terribly nice thought- she also realised that whatever form it took, there was nothing she could do about it. There wasn’t anywhere else for her to go.
She wondered if, seeing the paint, Catalina would think about that too. She wondered if it would make her regret having to be the one to take care of her.
She’d never been scared of her godmother, but she was when Catalina saw the paint.
‘Ay dios mio, what IS that?’
She tucked her chin down into her chest. ‘Paint.’ Her voice is very small.
Catalina fanned her face. ‘I thought it was blood, I thought-’ She shakes her head hard, like she’s shaking thoughts away, then touches it and frowns. ‘It’s dried. Why didn’t you tell me before, it would have been easier to- Oh mija, it’s alright, don’t cry-’
She started looking guilty rather than annoyed.
Once Cathy was settled in her lap, scrubbing her sore eyes with a tissue and only hiccuping a little bit, Catalina had very nicely explained that while it was technically Cathy’s fault for spilling the paint, it was also her own fault for not telling Cathy to put down newspaper before she started painting and that maybe having a cream carpet was just asking for it, whatever that meant.
‘So perhaps it all balances out, querida.’
‘Are you really cross?’
‘Do I look really cross, mija?’
She considered. ‘No.’
‘Good, because I’m not. I know it wasn’t on purpose. Let’s just both try to remember the newspaper next time, ok?’
‘Ok.’
‘And we’ll blame the muses for this one.’
Once Catalina had explained about the muses, she’d said that they should probably get on with cleaning it up ‘before someone else sees it and thinks you’ve got a body hidden under your bed.’
She’d still felt a bit wobbly, when she thought about the stain. Catalina had given her a big cuddle and said that a little paint wasn’t the end of the world and that it would probably come right out. It turned out though that Catalina herself wasn’t really sure how to get paint out of carpet, so she’d gotten out her phone to check- ‘There’s no excuse for not finding things out nowadays, mija’- and she’d even let Cathy type the question into google herself.
The paint had come out on the second attempt, and Catalina had made her promise to always tell her right away if anything like that ever happened again.
So everything had worked out alright after all, even if she still hadn’t seen Catalina really, properly angry yet.)
*
Going back to the flat feels funny because it feels like coming home but everything also looks a little bit different- Catalina reassures her that it’s just how things feel sometimes after a trip.
‘It’ll go away mija’
Cathay still cant help looking around though. ‘Why are the books different?’
‘What’s that?’
Cathy points at the bookshelf- the spines are different colours.
‘Just felt like it was time for a little shuffle around, it makes me remember which books I haven’t looked at for a while.’
This makes sense.
It’s the middle of the morning: Catalina has a mug of the dark, rich coffee that she buys in little paper sacks from the special food shop in town. Cathy likes the smell but not the taste, although she hopes that will change when she grows up because coffee seems to be all that grownups drink. Coffee and wine, except she isn’t sure if she likes wine yet- Catalina lets her sip at her coffee when she asks but she hasn’t yet given in over Cathy’s requests to be allowed a taste of her merlot.
(‘Maybe when you’re nine or ten, mija. I just don’t dare any earlier, the harpies would tear me to pieces.’
Harpies is what Catalina calls the other mums at school; Cathy isn’t allowed to tell anyone that though, even Anne, on pain of every unpleasant torture, mi vida.
‘A glass?’
‘A sip. A very little sip. And not until you’re older, like I said.’
‘I could just not tell anyone.’
Cathy is quite good at not telling people things, she’s good at keeping secrets- which is why she doesn’t even give Catalina a list of some of her best, most well kept secrets to prove it- like how Anne spilt blue nail polish on the carpet in Mary’s bedroom and blamed it on Kitty even though it wasn’t exactly a lie because Kitty had been playing with it too and it really could just as easily been her and honestly, it would have been fairer, all things considered, for Kitty to be the one to spill it, considering she’s only little.
Catalina is shaking her head.
‘But I’m very good at keeping secrets!’
‘I know, mija-’
‘I didn’t tell my teacher that you did the last sum for me on my homework.’
Catalins gives her a stern look. ‘Good because as I recall, that was a deal we made so that you would go to bed and stop worrying about it.’
‘And I didn’t tell her. So you could let me try and I wouldn’t tell anyone.’
‘But wouldn’t it be a bit pointless if you couldn’t tell anyone? Wouldn’t you want to tell Anne?’
This is true- it’s actually a bit pointless if she can’t even tell Anne, although Anne surely doesn’t count as anyone- but she doesn’t want to weaken her position so she shakes her head steadfastly, and Catalina laughs and says she’ll be a wonderful lawyer when she’s older and gives her a kiss on the top of her head rather than a sip of wine.)
They have fancy twisty pastries with apricot jam and Cathy has a mug of warm frothy milk with a tiny bit of coffee in it, a pinch of cinnamon and a sprinkling of brown sugar. It doesn't matter that it’s not real coffee- it's much nicer than coffee anyway.
The coffee milk in the special china cup with her name on it, even though she’s already had one breakfast because Catalina had said she hadn’t eaten yet and did she think she could manage elevenses even if it wasn’t quite eleven?
She thought she probably could, having not finished her pancake and she was right. The apricot pastries are delicious; she thinks it’s what sunshine would taste like sunshine was spreadable. Catalina says that’s the best description of apricot jam she has ever heard.
She’s reading one of her library books- the last time Catalina had visited her, back when her parents were alive, she’d brought one of the series with her and read it aloud while they were waiting for lunch to be ready and she’d quite liked it, but now reading it for herself, she doesn’t recognise all the characters.
Catalina had read her a story about Juliana and Diane and George (who was really Georgina) and Anne and Timmy the Cat, who were cousins and had adventures on an island- but when she tries to read it for herself, the names are different and the children are different and it’s a dog not a cat, who keeps on licking everything and barking and it’s just not as good as before.
(She has no idea why the children decided to swap lovely clever Timmy the Cat for a horrible barky, licky, bitey dog. She thinks it was a bad decision.)
She wonders if maybe she picked out something different.
Catalina has a big thick book that looks dusty.
‘What are you reading?’
‘Mmm?’ Catalina looks up and then nods as if she’s had to replay it in her head. ‘Oh!’ She says something in Spanish and then adds ‘But it’s called something else in English, of course.’
‘What’s it about?’
‘A little boy called Pip and all his adventures.’
‘What sort of adventures?’ She’s wondering if it will turn out that they’re the sort of adventures the children are having in her book and Catalina smiles.
‘No island, mija, you’d be disappointed. He meets an escaped prisoner out late one night and he helps him to cut off his chains and run away. And later he goes to a big old beautiful house, which has a room all ready for a wedding that never happened.’
‘That’s strange. If it never happened, then it’s not anything, so how can she have a room for it?’
‘They had everything ready but the groom didn’t turn up so the lady sits in her wedding dress next to her old cobwebby wedding cake all covered in dust and thinks about how sad she is.’
‘Oh.’ That sounds spooky but also interesting- she thinks maybe there’ll be an old cobwebby cake in her next scary story because for some reason, the idea of something that’s meant to be so happy being all forgotten and abandoned makes her feel shivery and she’s sure Anne and Anna will feel just the same way. Then she thinks of something else.
‘Why was he out at night at all? Not the prisoner but the little boy.’
Catalina looks uncomfortable for some reason. ‘I think he was just playing.’
‘But weren’t his parents worried about him?’
There’s a little pause and then Catalina says ‘He didn’t have any parents, querida.’
‘Oh. How old was he?’ Maybe the boy is nearly grown up, like in Secondary School.
‘Seven.’
She isn’t quite sure how she feels about that but she doesn’t feel like asking any more questions so there’s a little silence before Catalina says that she’s just finished the chapter.
‘I think I need a little break from reading.’ She puts her book down on the floor, face down. ‘Want to come and keep me company, mija?’
Cathy nods slowly and puts down her own book, except she uses a bookmark because she knows that’s the proper way to treat a book.
(Catalina is hopeless with bookmarks and always refuses Cathy’s offers to lend her one.
‘I’d lose it in a moment mija, and then I would have so much guilt! But thank you, all the same.’
Cathy has big plans for when her class starts their textiles projects, in which Catalina’s poorly treated books AND her sad, bookmarkless state, feature quite heavily. But she’s keeping this a surprise.)
She hasn’t finished her own chapter but she doesn’t like the way that these strange new characters keep telling George she isn’t allowed to do things because she’s a girl. She supposes it’s nice that Anne is allowed to cook- cooking on a real fire outside sounds very exciting- but she wonders if she ever gets tired of it.
‘It’s not the same as when you read it. They’re really horrible to George. And they don’t even have a cat anymore.’
She climbs up onto Catalina’s lap and Catalina wraps her arms around her.
‘I might have….changed some bits when I was reading it to you. I thought it would make the story better.’
‘It DID make the story better. Now it’s boring.’
Catalina considers. ‘I could try reading it to you my way if you like, querida.’
‘That’s ok. I think I’m going to take a break from reading too.’
‘Ok.’
Catalina cuddles her closer and for a while they just sit like that. She thinks about the little boy meeting the prisoner out at night, with no one to worry about him, but it’s not too bad to think about when she’s got Catalina’s cardigan tickling her cheek and Catalina’s chin resting on the top of her head.
Maybe she’ll include a prisoner in her next story too. Maybe he could even team up with the little attic girl and they could go around scaring people and sewing up mouths together.
‘Did he have a godmother?’
‘Who?’
‘Pip. Oh- no, he didn’t. He had an older sister, he lived with her instead.’
‘Like Anne and Mary.’
‘Anne still has her parents, mija, you know that.’ But Catalina doesn’t sound so very certain when she says it.
There’s a little pause, and then Catalina quietly asks if she’d like to talk.
‘About what?’
‘About last night mija.’
‘What about last night?’
She's being deliberately annoying but she can't help it because maybe if she carries on, Catalina will change her mind and they won’t have to talk about anything.
She wouldn't even mind Catalina getting really cross (she doesn’t think), whatever really cross is for Catalina (because she still isn’t sure), but she doesn’t, just puts her book down and takes another sip of naslty bitter black coffee.
‘About the phone call we had.’ She pauses. ‘There's no need to look so worried querida- I promise you're not in trouble, I'm not going to tell you off- and we don't have to talk now if you really would rather not. It’s just that last night, we talked a bit about some of the things you were worried about. And about your mum and dad. I think it would be a good idea to talk about some of those things properly- not because i think it will fix them but….maybe it will make them a bit more ordinary to talk about them. And perhaps less scary. I don't know.’
She actually sounds a bit anxious, much less self assured than usual. Usually, Catalina talks like she knows exactly what she’s saying and why. Now she keeps stopping and starting, like she’s worried she’ll say something wrong.
‘I want you to feel like you can tell me anything- that there isn't anything you have to keep secret unless you want to. And you can always always talk to me. About anything you want. Ok?’
She nods. She wonders if Catalina really means anything- anything.
‘Good, bad, sad, happy, whatever. And you can ask me anything, I don't want you to ever feel like you can't ask a question.’
Cathy thinks. ‘What if you can't tell me? What if it’s secret?’
Catalina smiles. ‘Then I will explain to you why I can’t tell you. But I won't be cross with you for asking, that’s the important thing. And I will always try to answer, if I can, alright?’
She nods again. ‘Will you tell the truth?’
‘Yes. It doesn't seem fair to ask you to be honest if I won’t be honest myself. And we do need to be honest with each other, mija. It's the only way.’
‘The only way for what?’
‘The only way to….keep our family going. Going smoothly, I mean. We’ll be a family whatever happens, of course, smooth or not.’
‘Are we a family?’ It’s a surprise to her- she’d sort of assumed that wasn't a word that applied to her any more, like Mother and Father and Parents.
‘Yes i think so.’ Catalina looks serious. ‘You and your Mum and Dad are still a family, of course. But you and I are a family too. At least I like to think we are. If that's ok with you of course.’
Cathy thinks about it. ‘If we’re a family, does that mean I have to call you Mum?’
Catalina looks shocked. ;Oh no! No, definitely not querida, I promise I'd never want to try and take your Mum’s name or place. I never at all meant that. I'm still your godmother- your Mum will always be your Mum. Not all families have a Mum and a Dad.’
‘Like in the story about Tango the Penguin.’ It’s a book she had when she was very little, but she can still remember the story.
‘Exactly.’ Actually, she thinks maybe Catalina sent her the book in the first place.
She could ask more questions about it- some that she’s mildly curious about, and some that she could probably make up if she felt like making this bit of the conversation stretch out longer...but she decides not too because Catalina is looking all anxious now and it's making her feel a bit guilty.
It’s alright- the thought of her and Catalina being a family is ok. She’d rather have Catalina for her family than anyone else, if she can't have mum and dad and she knows that she can't.
She wriggles into a more comfortable position in Catalina’s lap.
‘Ok. We can be a family.’
‘Good.’ Catalina smiles like she’s really relieved. ‘Good.’
After a while, she says, ‘There’s something I thought you might like to look at mija. I’ve been meaning to for a while and then last night, I thought of it.’
She stiffens slightly. She isn’t sure how she feels thinking about last night- one minute, the scary feeling seems very far away and all she can think about is stupid things like how babyish she must have sounded crying into the phone, and then the next, she can remember it very very well and it makes her feel shaky and sick, like she’s standing somewhere high and looking down.
She buries her face into Catalina’s cardigan and then has to come back out because the fluff is making her sneeze and Catalina laughs and slides her gently off her lap and says she’ll be back in a moment.
She wraps both arms around her tummy, hugging herself and wondering what The Thing will be.
When Catalina comes back in, she’s holding an old shoebox.

"i don't understand you."
aiden smirked at the puzzled looking man standing over him. "ah, no one does."
they were in the back of rhudy's music shop, where they usually hung out after guitar lessons. the room was small and comfortable, perfect for aiden. it was nice in here. less people. more space. he enjoyed laying across the cushion covered chairs that he'd organized into a line, leaving a single chair for his friend to sit on behind him.
rhudy leaned forward, the back legs of his chair leaving the ground. he was leaning on his hand, squashing the side of his face. "no, but seriously. my clairvoyance allows me to receive information about random things all the time. yet i barely ever get anything about you. it's so weird! i got, like, "his name starts with a" and then that was it." he crossed his arms along the tops of aiden's chairs, scowling playfully. "i'm beginning to think you're some kind of plant."
now that made aiden laugh, tossing his head back as far as he could into the cushions. "oh yeah? a plant from who?" he giggled. "the gods?"
rhudy quirked an eyebrow, tilting his head even further forwards and staring down at aiden with coffee eyes. "maybe so." then he cleared his throat, a grin cracking his face. "did it hurt when you fell from -"
"i'm gonna fucking kill you," aiden threatened as rhudy roared with laughter. something warm stirred inside of him at the sound. it was nice making someone laugh. "i swear i will. if i came from anywhere i crawled out of hell and now i'm stuck here."
"are you saying you're a demon?" rhudy joked. he tapped on the plastic chairs, his coloured nails creating a tune. "are you? is that what we're going with?"
aiden flipped him off. he was close enough to rhudy that he could have touched his freckled face if he wanted to. "maybe. maybe i am a demon sent here specifically to torture you, huh? maybe one day i'm gonna kill you and burn down your shop."
rhudy reached over and bapped aiden's nose. "well, you're a fun one, aren't you?" he said, his dimples appearing in his cheeks. "really know how to talk to a guy. also, if you are a demon sent here specifically to torture me, you're doing an awful job. i'll admit that maybe i even enjoy your presence."
aiden sat up slightly on his elbows, his face about ten centimeters away from rhudy's. "maybe i enjoy yours. this is a bit of a dilemma, isn't it."
rhudy blinked, his smile slipping slightly as he looked at him. aiden frowned, the look on the other man's face making him uneasy. "what?" he asked, laughing nervously. "what's up?"
"nothing," rhudy murmured, glancing away. "uh - septic, can i ask you -"
someone knocked at the door, startling them both. "mr o'donnell?" came a voice, and a dark haired woman peeked round the corner with an awkward smile. aiden scrambled to sit up off the chairs, face burning. the woman straightened, clearing her throat. "uh, mr o'donnell, we have a small situation with a customer. they want to speak to the manager."
rhudy groaned. "thank you, allie. and you don't have to call me by my last name, remember. no need to be so professional here." he flashed aiden a smile, fixing his rumpled plaid jacket. "i'll be back in a quick sec."
the woman held the door open as he left, glancing at aiden once more before going too. he realized how weird this must have looked from an outsider's perspective, but he didn't really care. rhudy was the manager of the store, he could do what he wanted. probably. aiden had no idea how actually managing a job worked.
it was maybe ten minutes before rhudy came back, looking tired. "something about a broken vinyl, blah blah," he explained as he walked in. "the guy wasn't putting it in right was the problem. i know, like, how many ways are there to put a vinyl in a record player wrong?" he sat right next to aiden, his arm on the glitch's shoulder. "apparently a lot."
aiden laughed, his shoulders rising to his ears as his face grew warmer. he wasn't sure if he liked how close rhudy was to him. he thought maybe he did. "i should probably be going soon," he mumbled. he picked up his red guitar and began zipping it back into its case. "my roommate might be worried if i'm out too long."
rhudy nudged him gently. "oh hey, you're a grown man. you can do what you want." a sudden smile crossed his face. "actually, do you wanna go out somewhere? walk down the high street or something? i don't mind, but we're closing up soon and i've got jack shit else to do."
aiden's heart was racing, wondering if there was some ulterior motive for this. there had to be, right? he couldn't imagine why rhudy would want to be around him after their lessons were over anyway. he squinted at the man suspiciously. "i - uh, why?"
rhudy reached out and suddenly ruffled aiden's hair, making him yelp. "uh, because i like you, and that's how friendships are formed?" he laughed. "you can hang out with people outside of just work and guitar lessons, you know. i wasn't kidding when i said i enjoy your presence."
for a moment aiden was too stunned by how casually rhudy had touched his hair that he couldn't respond. no one had ever done that but jack. it had felt nice. "i - well, i wasn't kidding either," he said lamely. he scratched the back of his neck, noting how his legs were bouncing. "why - what will we do?"
rhudy looked at him strangely, placing his own guitar back in its decorated case. "talk and stuff, maybe stop and get food if you want to. is that not something you do? what - what do you normally do when you're out with your friends?"
aiden wished that was a question he knew how to answer.
rhudy seemed to notice his discomfort. "hey, we don't have to go out if you don't want to. i can - i can, uh, walk you home if you want."
aiden's eyes widened. "uh - no, i don't mind going out!" he said quickly, wincing at the static that was creeping into his voice. he shook it off. "i'm not very good at... this… whole thing." he stood, slinging his guitar onto his back. "but i'd be fine to, uh, do something."
jack would absolutely be mocking him if he were here right now. rhudy, however, just smiled wide, bouncing on the balls of his heels. "ok! that's - that's good, yeah! let me close up and then we'll go!"
he brushed past aiden's arm as he went by and back out the door, and aiden breathed in sharply, rubbing his skin under his sleeve. he hadn't realized how unaccustomed to physical contact he was, especially with people other than jack. he unconsciously ran his fingers through his hair, trying to recreate the feeling. strange how it didn't feel the same. did he want rhudy to touch his hair? that was pretty weird. he shook off those thoughts and followed rhudy out to the front of the shop, bouncing along to the music that was slowly fading from the speakers. rhudy looked up when he saw him coming towards the doors, grinning. "you ready?"
aiden had killed people. aiden had done awful things. yet even after all that, he wasn't sure he was ready to socialize with someone outside of a setting he was more used to. "maybe," he said, laughing to cover up his nervousness. "so we just… walk? and talk?"
rhudy nodded, opening the door to let aiden out. "mm-hmm. maybe you can tell me more about yourself?" he took one look at aiden's expression and backtracked. "or i could talk about myself and various other stuff. that works."
"sorry," aiden mumbled. the cold autumn air of the outside slapped him in the face, blowing his dark green hair back from his forehead and cooling his sweaty skin. he hadn't realized how warm he was. "i don't have a lot to say about myself."
"surely there's something," rhudy said, buttoning up his pine coloured jacket. "you're an interesting guy. you've got to have some fun stories or facts about yourself or anything."
aiden shook his head. he suddenly found his black boots more interesting than anything else. "not really," he said. "i'm just -" he caught himself before he said his real name. "i'm just anti. i'm pretty boring."
rhudy elbowed him again, knocking their arms together. "nah, you aren't," he scoffed. "you're pretty alright. you're funny and really sweet and you play banging guitar. that's the perfect combination for a cool guy."
aiden glanced away again to hide his smile. all of this was new to him: the conversation, the compliments, the interaction with other people. a part of him screamed that he didn't deserve nice things like this after all he'd done. but maybe… maybe he could allow himself this.
"thanks," he said, and smirked, mimicking rhudy's scottish accent. "i guess ahm prood to be an alright lad -"
"nope," rhudy said immediately, walking away with his hands up in defeat. "nope, nope, nope. i take it all back. i fucking hate you."
aiden caught up to him, giggling. "aw, dinna fash yersel, rhoo-dee, i'm only kiddin' on -"
"i'm gonna fuckin' kill you," rhudy said, now mocking aiden's irish accent. "i'm gonna - uh, top of the morning, i don't know how to make fun of you -"
they fell against each other, laughing, and aiden wasn't sure when exactly rhudy had taken his hand and why he hadn't objected, but something happy was finally happening and no one could take it away from him. not the hero, not the magician, not jack. it was an exhilarating feeling.
maybe i am someone, he thought, squeezing rhudy's hand in his. i can be more than jack's friend. who's stopping me? not jack, that's for sure. i'd like to see him try to stop me again.
he was dimly aware that jack would be upset at him for going out somewhere so public without saying anything. but he didn't care. let him be mad. aiden was happy for once and that was all that mattered to him.
"i know a spot a little ways away we can walk to," rhudy said, interrupting his thoughts. "up fast the fields, near that old abandoned waterworks. do you wanna walk up?"
aiden very much did.
"i haven't been there before," he said, kicking at a puddle as he went by it. "but it sounds good. it does."
fuck jack. he didn't matter anymore.

Chapter 18
Trouble in paradise
And another year was coming to a close. The surrounding woods of District 12 stood covered in white. Merciless storms whined around the houses and shops and it snowed sometimes all day and all night.
The roads were a constant trouble but Sae’s granddaughter Nella’s family, the one who owned horses, put Blaze and Misty to good use so the people of Twelve could still go about their business. Katniss, Peeta and Posy built a colossal snow lantern in Haymitch’s back garden and Buttercup refused to set so much as a paw outside.
Twelve’s mentor always got surlier in winter. Just like the cat he spent most of his days cooped up in the house, a bottle of spirits in one hand and his knife in the other. Effie made him put it away in a kitchen drawer during her visits. Said she wasn’t keen on getting stabbed in the middle of the night. But since she hadn’t been around in almost two weeks now it had resumed its old purpose. He needed something to hold on to in the night.
With an array of bottles at arm’s reach Haymitch stared sullenly at the phone, his head against one of Effie’s fancy sofa cushions. Less fancy after he spilled on it. The house without Effie was like a garden without a gardener. Sooner or later it went back to its original state. He just couldn’t find a good enough reason to clean up his mess when she wasn’t around.
She tried to get some school trip to a district approved and the Board was giving her a hard time. That’s why she had to cancel but would it kill her to give him a call now and again?
He lifted the bottle to his lips and grunted when he swallowed the last drops. Why was it, that no matter how many seals he snapped he was always sucking the dregs out of it? He grabbed another and let the empty one roll onto the floor where it clinked against the rest of them.
He turned and shifted on the couch. It was exactly 13 days since he saw her and he couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt this uncomfortable. Even in just his pyjama pants the fabric strained against his business. Hell, you could camp under there.
He knew alcohol withdrawal. Was there anything such as sex withdrawal? Because he was horny pretty much all day long. Phone sex just wasn’t the same and Effie hadn’t had much time or peace for that lately either.
I won’t call her, he thought. What little pride he had left he liked to keep.
That’s what annoyed him most about all this. If anyone, Effie was the one supposed to be pining, not him! They’d been together for less than three months and already he’d grown dependent on her!
And it wasn’t just the sex. He was better with her. The nights were never easy but he wondered if Effie knew how hard it was to go solo again after he got used to having her arms and legs wrapped around him. Her kisses distracted him and calmed him down faster than a bottle even.
“This is bullshit,” he told the ceiling. Real good thinking. Getting hooked on someone who lived 24 hours away. ”Bloody woman,” he muttered and slipped his hand inside his pyjama pants. ”All weird clothes and… s-silly accent.” He groaned and screwed his eyes shut.
Lost in his own dirty imagination he never heard the door when it opened and closed.
“Haymitch? You awake? Oh! God, I didn’t need to see that.”
Peeta. Great. Exactly what he needed. Disgruntled, Haymitch pulled his hand out of his pants and saw the boy stand there with a loaf of bread and his hand over his eyes.
Meddlesome kids.
He tossed a threadbare, old blanket over his groin and sat up.
“Since when did you get so squeamish?” he muttered. “Wotcha expect when you walk into a man’s house?”
Peeta peered through his fingers and when he saw his mentor was decent he handed over the loaf, wrapped in a towel. Haymitch muttered out thanks and poured himself a glass of wine. He carved off an uneven slice of the still warm bread that he offered the boy.
“No, thanks, I already ate,” Peeta said and watched his old mentor dunk it in his wine. “You know, Haymitch,” he said and walked over to the hearth to build up the fire. “If you miss her so much just take the train. Before you get completely chafed.”
”Good one,” Haymitch muttered. He looked at the boy with a pair of blood-shot eyes. “What day is today?”
“Saturday,” Peeta replied. “December 1th. And I spoke with Annie”, he added. “We’ll go there on the 11th instead. Theresa works all through the holidays.”
Haymitch nodded to show he heard. Ever since Tessa moved to the fishing district, her relationship with her daughter had shrunk to a call or two. Mostly just birthdays and Christmas. But she had reached out to the girl this year, or so he heard.
Too little, too late, he thought but kept to himself. He wasn’t going to butt in. He left that to the boy. Besides, even if he could come up with something helpful, Peeta would say it anyways and say it a hundred times better.
“Sarah and Cassia will mind the bakery,” Peeta went on. “And Annie said if you and Effie want to join, there’s plenty of room.”
A flame danced up from the coals and so Peeta left his mentor to his own devices. Now was his chance to lock the door and pick up where he left off. He considered it a moment but fuck it, he wasn’t in the mood and soon it was going to be dark. Those damn winter nights that went on forever.
He drowned another piece of bread in his glass. He should just drink himself into a stupor and have this day be over and done with. Yeah, he liked the sound of that.

*ring ring* Hello, this is Effie Trinket’s answer phone. I can’t pick up at the moment but do leave a message and I will call you back. Until then: have a very very nice day! *peep*
*ring ring* Hello, this is Effie Trinket’s answer phone. I can’t pick up at the moment but do leave a message and I…
Yes, hello? Effie Trinket.
Hey, Effs. Remember me?
Oh, hi Haymitch. How are you?
Bored. Bit hammered.
Well, of course. Did you eat at least?
When you comin’ over, Eff? You never said.
Hello?
Yes, I’m here. But Haymitch, I’m afraid I won’t make it to District 12 this week. Half the parents are already furious with me and the Board…
So to hell with it. We’ll go to Four. Annie says…
It’s not for me. It’s for the girls. And this trip will happen, I’ll make it happen!
You didn’t come last week either.
I know.
I …*sighs* I can come over.
Haymitch.
What?
It’s not a good idea. I really need to focus on this 100% and you are…
A big, fat distraction.
Exactly! No, I didn’t mean it like that. It’s just… I won’t be home a lot and it would be no fun for you in the Capitol if…
*snorts* Yeah, cause I normally have a blast in the big C. But fine, whatever. Just forget it.
Oh, Haymitch. Don’t be like that. I promise I will make it up to you.
*mutters and takes a mouthful of something*
I’ll call you tomorrow night, OK?
*mutters continues*
Haymitch…
Alright. Alright. I’m not angry. Not even a little. *drinks another mouthful* I can do without you kickboxing me in bed anyways.
Goodnight, Haymitch. We’ll talk tomorrow. And please don’t drink too much.
Night, Eff.
*toot toot*
xXx
If Haymitch believed he couldn’t be further from Effie’s thoughts he was wrong. She missed him dearly.
I should tell him so properly, she thought as she poured herself a glass of water and made a mental note to call him again during her lunch hour.
It snowed in District 12 but here the lamp posts reflected themselves in rain puddles on her street. But the Captiol would let the first snow fall any day now and it might very well be the last time too.
There were serious talk about de-funding the weather control altogether and use the money where it was more needed. It stirred a heated debate in the media. To here the negative voices say it, it would be the final nail in the Capitol’s coffin.
As for Effie she found the whole circus rather annoying, especially since she knew something else in much greater need of raised awareness.
With one last critically look in the mirror she reached for her purse on the bed. She knew what Haymitch would say about the bandana but showing up with her natural hair wouldn’t win her any points with the school board.
She turned for the door.
And jumped back.
“Haymitch!” she gasped, hand over her heart. “W-what on Earth…?” Because leaned against the doorframe, face puffy and red, stood the man she hadn’t laid eyes on in two weeks.
”Thought I’d surprise you,” he said. “Believe it or not but I missed you, sweetheart.”
He pushed himself off the frame and wrapped his arms around her.
Haymitch, you’re hard! Did you drink?”
“Not a drop.”
“You’re not supposed to be here,” she said, voice muffled by his lips. ”I told you… I told you, now is not a good time. Haymitch!” she groaned in frustration when he nuzzled her neck. ”I don’t have time for this. My cab will be here at any moment.”
“Five minutes,” he mumbled and pecked and licked the tender skin just below her earlobe where he knew she liked to be kissed and Effie groaned again. A different kind of groan this time. “Come to bed, sweetheart.”
“Haymitch,” she sighed, torn between lust and aggravation. She wrapped her arms around his neck. ”You are totally ruining my schedule.”
They sunk down onto the bed. Effie’s carefully painted lipstick smeared out on both their face, their kisses stressed and eager. She fumbled with his belt and Haymitch trembled in every limb when she pulled down his pants, his underpants. Their lips clashed together again and she grinded her thigh against him.
“No! Ohh!” Haymitch got out and before he could even try to rein himself back in he climaxed. All over Effie’s skirt.
“Haymitch!” She pushed him off of her and stared at his mess. “I don’t believe you!” she hissed and hurled herself out of bed. “This is exactly why I never should give in to you and your goddamn hands, Abernathy!” A car honked outside. “And there’s my cab. Brilliant! Just brilliant!”
She locked herself in the bathroom and Haymitch sat on the bed, rather foolish and with lipstick all over his mouth. He heard the sound of water running and soon she returned, flushed and half dressed, hopping about on one leg to try and get out of her silk stockings. He grinned at how sexy and ridiculous she looked.
Big mistake.
“You think this is funny!?” Effie spat. “How would you feel if I shot my bodily fluids on you!?”
That only invited bad jokes but he knew he was one wrong word away from being thrown out so he just pulled up his pants and got out of bed.
“Sorry, Eff,” he said and tried to pull her into one of his bear hugs. But he could just as well save his breath.
“Careful,” she said and pushed him away. “Before you to blow all your fuses. I have to go.”
And she closed herself in the walk-in closet and didn’t come out again until dressed in an identical outfit as before, only turquoise this time. “I’ll see you tonight,” she said when she brushed by him.
He listened to the fading clatter of her high heels and the cab when it drove off a moment later.
This spur of a moment trip didn’t go at all the way he pictured it.
He wiped the lipstick with the back of his hand.  Last time he showed up unannounced they kissed on her doorstep and he got both her and coffee.
This was something else.
And to come on her leg like a teenager. Course, he wasn’t famous for his stamina but he should really be past that point at least.
He sighed and stripped the mattress. Normally he never bothered to make the bed. Effie complained about it all the time. But he’d have a hard time getting back into her good graces as it was so couldn’t hurt.
Not that he wasn’t used to pissed Effie. He’d spent half his life fighting with that woman. Only reason they hadn’t these past few months was because they were both breaking their balls to try and impress each other. Was only a matter of time, really, before they were back to their bickering, old selves. And in a way it was a relief. Familiar ground.
Half an hour later he poured himself a glass of orange juice that he brought with him into the living room.
It would be a long day. He should have brought a book or something. But they spent next to no time here so he never bothered to leave his own stuff around the place like she did in Twelve. Besides, with a butt naked Effs Trinket, who cared about reading?
The glass clattered against his teeth when he drank. He didn’t lie when he told Effie he was sober. One positive thing about her job was that he could drink himself blind when she wasn’t around and thereby stay sober enough once she was.
Chaff would laugh if he knew his old friend rationed his liquor for a woman but really it made life a hell of a lot easier.
Dawn broke into full morning. He wanted to get some shut-eye while he waited for her but between the shakes and the painful sunshine he wasn’t getting much rest.
He rubbed his temples. It was the same each time. The tremors, the headaches. Nausea was next.
And those goddamn mirrors! How many did one person need? He struggled with the blinds, pulled the curtains together but the light was still too bright.
I’m not gonna drink. Not yet. Later. After we’ve made up and she’s asleep.
But Haymitch Abernathy’s perseverance had never been strong. Not when it came to alcohol. He soildered on, for an hour, two. But before long he stumbled through her apartment in search for his bag.
He looked in all the usual places. The hallway, her bedroom, the living room, even the wardrobes in case Effie found it and put it away. Cushions flew through the air as he searched the couch, he tore at the curtains despite the evil sun, checked all the window sills, twice.
Nothing.
And then he realized it and headache or no headache he slammed his palm against the wall.
He forgot the damn thing on the train! He’d been so occupied with thoughts of what he was going to do to Effie when he saw her he went and left it on the seat!
Spewing profanities over himself, he stalked off to Effie’s drinking cabinet but his indignation just flared up all the hotter at the sight of the empty shelves. Since when had he given her a reason to hide her liquor? Not lately! And it wasn’t like Effie had gone and boozed through her entire supply all of a sudden.
He wondered how she would like to see him go cold turkey. Katniss and Peeta could tell her how fun that was.
And all at once, his anger turned to despair. He sunk down onto the couch, his aching head in his hand. An ache for which there was only one cure.
xXx
Maybe I was too hard on him.
Effie climbed out of the cab, umbrella folded in hand. It was dark when she left home and it was dark now. Her breath stood like a cloud in the cold air.
He came all this way.
The apartment was also dark and she turned the lights on with a double clap. A soft clap just in case he was asleep, but she doubed it. He seldom slept this late in the day.
“Haymitch?”
When she didn’t found him on the couch she went from room to room, even the gym and library.
Once back in the living room Effie’s eyebrows were furrowed together. Did he go back to District 12? No, surely not.
The sofa cushions were all in the wrong places and distractedly she put them back where they belonged.
He must have gone out, she thought. Maybe to walk her home from the Academy and they missed each other. Or perhaps even get her something to make up for this morning.
Yes, he’d show up eventually and she’d already decided not to mention what had happened. She didn’t want to spend their night fighting too.
She took a magazine from the rack just as the first few raindrops fell outside. Before long it poured in such relentless sheets you could hardly see across the road even and if Effie thought reading would take her mind off things she was sorely mistaken.
As the hours passed it was impossible not to think about Haymitch trapped out there in the wet and cold. All she could hope for was that he found refuge somewhere. Maybe a coffee house. Yes, Haymitch probably enjoyed a cup right at this moment. No reason to worry.
But Effie was a worrier and worry she did. She sat on the couch, magazine long forgotten and stared out the window.
What if he got lost? Or hurt? Yes, she could see it so clearly. How he crossed the street, soaked and freezing and just desperate to come home to her again. How stupid of me, he’d think, to leave Effie’s nice and warm and well-furnished apartment when I could be in her arms right now. I should listen to her more.
But then a car came and Haymitch got hit, of course he got hit! He never looked both ways properly. And now he lay there on the road while the rain washed his blood down the street and the world floated away and the last thing Effie ever did while he lived was to snap and yell, all because of a little ejaculation.
The vivid images had Effie on her feet. Pacing the floor she wrung her hands in distress.
5 minutes, she thought. I’ll give him 5 more minutes and…
That’s when a pair of head lights sailed across the wall. Effie whipped around and even before the knock she was at the door.
“Evening, ma’am. This man says he lives here.”
On her welcome mat stood two police officers. The rain splashed off their uniforms and propped up between them was Haymitch.
He barely noticed what was going on. His head hung low, hair in wet tangles over his face. You could smell the whiskey on him a mile away. Effie watched the man she shared beds with and knew she was an idiot. A complete idiot, even after all these years. Because she never learned, never truly accepted this was how Haymitch ended up. How he always ended up.
“Ma’am?” the officer repeated and snapped her back to reality.
“Yes,” she said. “Yes, that’s just about right.”
They helped Haymitch inside and filled her in on what had happened. Apparently he’d gone to the pub on Heaven’s Square. When the bartender finally told him he’d had enough, things got loud, he wouldn’t leave and finally she had to call the police to come and get him.
“I’ll manage it from here,” Effie said when Haymitch leaned heavily on her, swaying from side to side. “Thanks for your help.”
The two men nodded. When they walked back to their car, one of them turned to the other and said,
“That was Haymitch Abernathy, right?”
“Yes, I think so. He hasn’t changed much, has he?”
And they both chuckled.
“Oh, Haymitch,” Effie said as she half-led, half-carried him through the apartment. “I was so worried about you.”
“Wanted to see you,” he slurred and Effie grimaced at the smell of his breath. It could light a flame. “Better with you, Effie. Better. Oh, ” he groaned. “I don’t feel so good.”
”OK, OK, come here,” said Effie. She struggled to open the bathroom door, her hands full with Haymitch until she managed to get them both inside. Haymitch reached blindly for the toilet and for the next half hour Effie held his hair as he puked.
His shirt and trousers were damp from the rain and once she got him on to the bed she stripped him down to his undergarments. She went to get a blanket but changed her mind mid-way and headed for the broom closet first.
Which was good thinking because she had no sooner re-appeared with the bucket before Haymitch groaned again and she stuck it under his face just in the nick of time.
xXx
“Wha… what’re…?”
The pounding that had woken him only grew worse as Haymitch slowly came to his senses.
“What’re you doing?” he murmured.
“What does it look like?” Dressed in a fresh teacher’s outfit, navy this time, Effie walked back and forth across the room, getting her last minute things. Each step of her high heels sent a jolt of pain through his skull.
Very slowly Haymitch pulled himself to sitting. He winced when she snapped her purse shut. A gunshot couldn’t have made a greater sound. He rubbed his bare chest and watched her lift a water carafe off the vanity table.
“Oh, thanks, sweetheart,” he croaked. His throat felt like someone had dragged it along the asphalt.
Effie eyed him coolly.
”This is for me,” she said. “Unless you want to get me pregnant on top of everything else.” She swallowed the pill. “Not that I am going to sex you up anytime soon.”
Haymitch rubbed his eyes, wished nothing more than to go back to sleep. No, most of all he wanted a drink but he fought the nausea and forced himself to stand.
”What do you want?” she asked when she had his hands on her shoulders. “If you’re thirsty, then…”
”Don’t shout, sweetheart,” Haymitch murmured. ”’m sorry ’bout yesterday.”
”Do you even remember yesterday?”
He tried to pull her into a hug but Effie resisted, squirmed like she sat on an anthill.
”I have to go.”
“It’s early.”
“To you maybe. No.” She pressed her palms against his chest and made him take the empty glass. “Drink water if you need it. Breakfast is on the table.”
And he was alone again.
He felt his way to the bathroom like a boat in full storm and spent some quality time with his best friend the toilet.
This was his reality every time he had a withdrawal. Afterwards he always drank more than he could take. He soaked it up like a dry rag.
And later when he sat in one of Effie’s armchairs, wrapped in a robe and his hands around a mug of coffee, he tried to piece together exactly what had happened yesterday.
He went out to get his bag. That much he remembered. But he never got that far because… he took the route through Heaven’s Square. Yeah, to have a drink at the pub first. And one drink became two and two became three until he was an absolute wreck for Effie to take care of.
In other words, same old same old.
He slurped his coffee.
I should find some way to make it up to her.
xXx
*ring ring* Hello, this is Effie Trinket’s answer phone. I can’t pick up at the moment but do leave a message and I will call you back. Until then: have a very very nice day! *peep*
Haymitch, it’s me. I’m running a little late because I bumped into Octavia. She’s very upset because her boyfriend just broke up with her. She needs a friend right now so I promised I’d stay with her for a while. But I should be home by eight. You can make your own dinner, right?
“Great,” Haymitch muttered. “Just great.”
But then he had to caugh again and he whisked the smoke that billowed up from the roast pan.
He’d never win an award as “Chef of the year” (Neither would Effie for that matter) but he cooked when he was a kid! How out of practice could one person get?
He eyed the dish to try and assess the damage. It was supposed to be roast beef with potatoes and vegetables but it didn’t look right. Not like the recipe. But maybe if he just cut away the burned parts and jumbled it up a little perhaps she wouldn’t notice?
Man, why didn’t he just order catering and pretend he made it? A romantic dinner. Fuck, what a bright idea.
The bottles of red wine had stood untouched in their paper bag all night but now he seized one of them. Just a glass. Just to shut his damn body up.
He found the corkscrew, his breaths more rapid at the mere prospect and he sighed with relief when the red liquid wet his tongue.
It was amazing how much easier everything got after that one drink. The tremors disappeared and so did most of his worries. It would still be great. It looked great, at least it would once on the table.
Ten to eight he spread the beige table cloth (champagne coloured, Effie would say) in the dining room that they hardly ever used. He set the table, dug out some candles and the fancy plates.
Last of all he dropped a handful of lemon slices into the water carafe and paused only to pour himself some more wine. He admired his work – the food, the folded napkins, the candle light in the pretty glasses rimmed with gold.
He saluted his reflection and drank.
xXx
By the time Effie pushed inside the apartment it was past midnight. Her head throbbed from having to console Octavia for the past hours and she couldn’t stop a moan when she finally got out of her high heels.
All she wanted was to sleep but her hands shook from low blood sugar so she limped off to make herself a sandwich.  She opened the kitchen door.
And stopped short. For a full minute she just stared at the scene before her, like she couldn’t take it in. Unwashed coppers and pans balanced precariously on top of each other. Used plates, silverware and kitchen tools filled the sink. The counters and the floor were covered with carrot and potato peels, smushed tomatoes, withered lettuce and pools of vinegar. The butter was left to melt, the fridge door not even closed. And the smell of burnt meat she hadn’t noticed through the door filled her nostrils.
It was the paper bag, the empty paper bag, that finally brought life back into her numb limbs.
“Haymitch!”
It wasn’t hard to find him. She needed only follow his snores. She pushed inside the dining room and there he was. Face down on the table, surrounded by empties.
I should just leave him like this. Go to bed and leave him like this!
“Wake up,” she said and shook him.
Haymitch mumbled something and his snores resumed.
”Wake up!” She shook him harder and just when she seriously considered Katniss’s cold water method he cracked opened an eye.
“Where you been?” he slurred and slowly lifted his head from the table.
“With Octavia. I told you so over the phone. Haymitch, how could you!”
“There’s dinner.” He gestured towards the cold food and would have knocked over a candle hadn’t she been there to straighten it up. “Made it so you wouldn’t be pissed no more.”
“Good thinking, Haymitch.”
“Just have to heat it up.” The chair slammed against the floor when he pulled himself up. “I’ll heat it up for you. I’ll do an’thing for you.”
“Come here now.” She tried to steer him away from the table. “Haymitch. Oh, don’t bother with the food!” she said when he grabbed the roast pan. To heavy for him in his state it tilted and potatoes, beef and root vegetables bombed the parquet floor. He staggered back a step when she tried to take it from him and the salad bowl smashed to pieces when he bumped in to the table.
"Careful!"
She tugged at his arm and tried to pull him away but his foot slid forward on a piece of tomato and Haymitch slumped down on his ass. He grunted, confused and crawled on all fours as he tried to find his footing.
“Watch out for the broken glass, Haymitch. Come, I’ll help you.” She put his arm around her shoulder, her own around his back and under his armpit. “Push with your feet,” she said and made a gigantic heave. He was like a sack of potatoes and the smell of wine was so overwhelming it would have brought her dinner up if she had any.
She’d gotten him half way up when Haymitch suddenly gasped and then he vomited all over the floor. A vile, red mixture that splattered Effie’s legs and skirt.
She didn’t know how she managed to get him back to her bed. But just like the night before he collapsed face down and she stripped him out of his clothes. Vomit dripped down his chin and nose and she wiped him off, rather roughly.
“Do you need to throw up again?” she asked and reached for the bucket. “Haymitch, do you feel sick?”
But he looked at her cross-eyed like he didn’t hear or understand.
She left him with the bucket nearby and went into the bathroom to get out of her soiled outfit.  But she hadn’t gotten even half-way before she had to steady herself against the wall. The lack of sleep combined with the fact she hadn’t eaten finally took its toll on her and tiny, black spots swam before her eyes. With no chair closeby she let herself slide down the wall until she sat on the floor, waiting for the dizziness to subside.
Through the ringing in her ears she heard Haymitch’s groan.
“Eff. Effs, I…”
And then there was only the splash of vomit when it hit the floor.
Effie closed her eyes.
xXx
 *ring ring*
Pallas’s Academy. This is Ruby.
I need to talk to Effie. Can you get her to the phone, please? Effie Trinket.
May I ask who’s asking?
That’s… no one.
She’s got class.
Well, it’s important. Will only take a minute.
She’s got class.
Yeah, I heard you the first time. Tell her … tell her it’s Haymitch.
Haymitch … That Haymitch? As in Haymitch Abernathy?
So can you get her to the phone now?
I’m not supposed to interrupt unless there’s an emergency.
Well, it is.
It’s an emergency?
It’s an emergency. Now go get Effie.
Alright. Excuse me a moment Mr. Abernathy.
 …
Haymitch? Are you alright?
Yeah, I’m fine. Look Effs, about last night …
Why do you tell Ruby there’s an emergency if you’re fine?
Only way I could talk to you.
Haymitch, you interrupted me in the middle of class!
I just wanted to say…
I’m not interested in anything you have to say right now! I’ve barely slept in days, you’ve ruined two outfits for me and my girls are waiting!  Do you have any idea …
Oh, for God’s sake woman! Just let me tell you why I called and I’ll hang up!
No, I am hanging up! And don’t you ever call me at work again unless, of course, you’ve drunken yourself back into the hospital! Goodbye!
*toot toot*
xXx
The flat audio tone rung in his ear. Haymitch sighed and hung up. He slumped down on the couch and rubbed his forehead.
When he woke today, finding her long gone, he hoped against hope that he could at least clean up his own mess and felt a fresh pang of guilt and regret at the sight of the spotless kitchen and dining room with the strong fumes of cleaning fluids that badly masked the familiar odor underneath. Poor Effie.
How could he let everything reel so completely out of control? Must be some kind of a record.
Of course, it wasn’t the first time she’d taken care of him drunk but she was still just his colleague back then and when he was too much to handle she always had help from the Capitol attendants. To have to clean up his mess as his woman… It was a difference.
And then it was this last, brilliant move of his. To call and apologize. He bent over backwards to fix things and only made it worse.
Maybe I should just go home.
He didn’t want this trip to be just like when Annie, Finn and Johanna came over and he made a complete arse of himself. At least then he had some kind of a mitigating factor to his actions.
But he knew Effie. If he left she’d take that as an offence too.
He drew a deep sigh and with nothing better to do he grabbed her newspaper and opened it at a random page.
And as if fate had a hand in it, it happened to be a full spread add. Of a dance palace.
“Atlas Halls open for the Christmas season,” he read. The picture showed a bunch of weird looking couples twirling around a winter scene with fake trees in the background.
Atlas Halls? Sounded familiar but he was pretty sure he’d never set foot in the place. No, Effie mentioned it at some point. Yeah, she’d spent New Year’s there a couple of times.
Haymitch knew a few Capitol dances, believe it or not. He let Effie teach him years ago. Part of their whole charming sponsors away from their money act. Back when he still thought their district might have a shot in hell.
She’d be home in three hours. That gave him plenty of time.
Because if a night out dancing wouldn’t brighten Effie’s mood nothing could.
He shouldered out of his robe once inside the bathroom. He didn’t exactly smell like roses and he liked Effie’s shower. Felt like standing in a warm summer rain. Of course the products weren’t great. She had so many bottles and jars and tubes in here she could open her own beauty parlor. Half the stuff he didn’t know what it was for and even the supposedly ‘male’ scents she bought especially for him smelled weird as fuck.
Finally he poured something blue on his head and as he massaged it into his hair he made a mental note to bring his own stuff next time. That was to say if there would be a next time.
Back home he did nothing to his hair after he showered, just left it to sundry. But if desperate times called for desperate measures. He punched a few buttons on the panel and stepped onto the math so the currents could turn his wet, tangled hair into something he knew he’d hate.
Baked and dried he went to have a look at himself and true enough. His hair had gone from familiar to Capitol. He hung a towel over the mirror so he didn’t have to see it.
There was an electric razor on one of the shelves but he didn’t touch it. Effie would have to live with his stubble. He looked enough like a Peeta blonde little boy as it was. Instead he went to have a look in his closet. She always sneak bought him stuff. One of the habits she was unable to kick and well, it was her money.
He dumped the garment bags on the bed. Damn, this would be an exhausting night. But he’d suffer through it, the looks and the whispers. He’d dance with Effie and afterward everything would be good again.
Which was why, an hour before Effie went off work, Haymitch sat on the couch dressed to the nines.
And as much as he hated to admit it he actually liked this outfit. The dark blue suit went well with the checkered waistcoat and the lilac dress shirt underneath. Even his pink and blue tie with the matching pocket square looked good. The collar was a little snug but he couldn’t afford to be whiny.
He should’ve thought about this days ago.
But the hour went by and no Effie showed up. He tried to remember how far away her school was. Even if the Capitol was big (not like District 2 or Eleven but still) the public transportation was so advanced here, nothing lay far off. He could call a cab. Go and meet her. But with his luck Effie would be just around the corner the moment he left the house.
So he remained where he was.
The minutes passed at a snail’s pace. He tugged at his collar to get some air in.
How many friends with boy trouble did she have? If she was running late again why didn’t she call?
One hour became two and still no Effie to go. Sweat trickled down his back and he squirmed and pulled at his pants and underpants that kept worming their way in between his butt cheeks.
And when she’d been gone three hours, Haymitch tore off his tie. Effie was never late like this! It was just her way of getting back at him for how he treated her.  He saw his reflection in the window, all those ridiculous curls and that decided things.
Screw this.
He grabbed the spray bottle, the one she used for her potted plants and he sprayed his hair until it lay flat and lifeless again. He had never changed for a woman before and he wasn’t going to start now! This was a joke. He was a joke! Dressing up like some damn Capitolian.
She’d been away all day already and she expected him to, what? Lay jigsaw puzzles until she had time for him? Because obviously she didn’t have time for him. She just spent it with everyone else.
His hair dripped on the newspaper when he scribbled down a note. He could just as well go restack his liquor supply for the journey home. He almost never got to drink those expensive brands. Effie refused to buy them for him. Said she wouldn’t “enable him”, like that made a difference what so ever.
By the time he reached the Heaven’s Square it had started to rain again.
The shops and stores lit up the icy drizzle and the stall owners who packed up for the day.
And cramped in between a music store and a shop which sold naughty underwear, was the pub. Like a jewel with its bright colors and promises.
But Haymitch never got that far. Because now he saw her.
By the window inside the coffee house sat Effie across from Katniss’s prep team.  Haymitch’s brow crinkled at the sight of their serious faces and Effie’s waving hands in the air to emphasize her words. None of them had noticed him yet, standing out here in the rain.
But now she looked up, startled at the sight of him and excused herself from the table.
”Haymitch?” The cold wind rustled her skirt when she appeared at the door. “You… dressed up?”
Haymitch looked from her to Octavia, Flavius and Venia who practically misted the window in their effort to see what happened.
“Having fun?” he said. “Do carry on. I was just leaving.”
“Haymitch, I … Haymitch?” But he had already stalked off. “Haymitch, wait!”
He knew it was childish but he didn’t stop. He just couldn’t. He felt vomit at the back of his throat and it was the look on the prep’s faces. No doubt she had poured out all her heart’s bitterness over him to those three, telling them what a good-for-nothing drunk he was.
He kicked off his shoes in the hallway.
Haymitch!” Effie called when she entered a moment later, flustered and with rain in her hair. “Why did you run off like that?”
“Sorry if I messed up the image, princess”, he said and shouldered out of his jacket. “I know how much you care about your looks. Must be important when you have little else.”
“Why are you like this?” Effie cried. “We just had a coffee!”
“Yeah, sure. What’s another three hours when I’ve already waited all fucking day, Effie!”
“Well, I told you not to come this week, remember? I told you I was busy!”
“At work,” he threw back at her. “Not out on the town. Bet you had a great trash-talk.”
“We didn’t talk about you! Not at all! But perhaps I didn’t want to come home, ever thought of that? You haven’t exactly been a lot of fun lately.”
“What do you want from me? I was gonna take you out dancing.”
“That doesn’t make up for the horrible way you’ve acted!” Effie yelled. “Ever since you got here, Haymitch, I’ve been nothing but worried, disappointed and exhausted. Taking care of you drunk is not my job anymore! It never was!”
It got very quiet after Effie finished.
“Eff,” Haymitch finally said, his face hard and closed off. “I know you shouldn’t have had to deal with all that. But it’s not like it was some big mystery to you that I drink. I’m tired of this argument, alright. This is who I am. If you can’t deal with it then…”
“Well, maybe I can’t!” Effie cried.
She never meant to say it but now the words were out.
The truth was out.
Haymitch stared at her in the silence that followed those words and all the things she implied. Effie’s eyes were filled with tears now and when he didn’t speak she only got out of her painful shoes and said,
“You can have the bedroom. I can’t sleep with that smell anyway.”
Author’s note: Extra long chapter to make up for the long wait and it was an absolute pain to edit lol! I hope you liked it. Leave a review if you wanna make my day and I’ll see you in the next chapter!
