oh my god thank you so much. i'll probably have to watch the video a couple more times so the information sticks in my head but i finally understand a sense of when everything takes place and what exactly happened. i had no idea you play as a same single character through out almost all the games, never mind that it was the son of the guy killing everyone. can i ask why you think its william afton youre playing as in custom night?

yesss the dynamic between michael and william is genuinely one of my favorite protagonist vs antagonist dynamics in general, the games really do such a good job emphasizing the similarities and differences between the characters. in the games, michael has his father’s british accent, and is implied to look very similar to him (with michael stating that circus baby, possessed by his own little sister, mistook michael for william in sister location). but it also nails their complete opposite personalities so well to me, with their opposing responses to committing child murder (william deciding to murder more children while michael eventually attempts to free the souls of william’s victims following his own death). and one thing that’s not really a detail, but also not really overtly compared, is in william ending up as a corpse stuffed into a suit, while michael ends up as a corpse that had an endoskeleton stuffed into him, which isn’t necessarily some huge breakthrough in the existence of metaphors but i really love it lol

UCN itself doesn’t actually have a plot (aside from gags and easter eggs), but it does have a few voice lines (given by animatronics after they jumpscare you) that can be taken into account if you want to figure out who you’re playing as!

quick aside though, just because it’s interesting, one of these voicelines in UCN is also why susie being the first victim is essentially confirmed: (withered) chica, who we know to be possessed by her, has a voice line of “I was the first, I have seen everything.” (her voicelines also sound as if they’re coming through a spirit box which is a neat detail)

anyway the first, immediate assumption that can be made in determining who you are playing as in UCN is because the ghosts directly state that you, the player, have killed at least one of the children (the voicelines are listed below). this nails possibilities down right off the bat to you playing as either william or michael, as they are the only two characters in the games who have killed at least one child.

with that in mind, pretty much all theorizing in this game draws from a handful of voicelines which you may get upon being jumpscared by specific animatronics:

ones who say they are friends of “the one you should not have killed”:

Withered Chica: “I have seen him, the one you shouldn’t have killed.”

Jack-o-Chica: “Greetings from the fire, and friend of what you should not have killed.”

Withered Bonnie: “Time to face the consequences of your failure,” and “What is this new prison? Is it me trapped, or is it you? Perhaps, it’s us both.”

Mangle: “He’s here, and always watching, the one you shouldn’t have killed.”

“the one you should not have killed” speaking through multiple animatronics:

Happy Frog: “We’ve only just begun. I will never let you leave. I will never let you rest.”

Nedd Bear: “This is how it feels, and you get to experience it over, and over, and over again, forever. I will never let you leave.”

Orville Elephant: “He tried to release you. He tried to release us. But I’m not gonna let that happen.” “I will hold you here. I will keep you here. No matter how many times they burn us.”

the emilys and aftons:

charlie through the puppet: “I recognize you. But I am not afraid of you… not anymore,” and through nightmarionne “This time, death cannot save you.”

elizabeth through circus baby and the later design called scrap baby has lines as well, however they are more consistent with the animatronic's personality than her own, likely because in previous games elizabeth seemed to be mostly unaware that she wasn’t actually circus baby

due to evan having been killed by fredbear, I believe that nightmare fredbear’s line “We know who our friends are, and you are not one of them.” comes from evan, however that’s more of an assumption than anything. more concretely, due to evan being told in the end of fnaf 4 that he would be remade, generally theorized by william, i also believe that he delivers nightmare freddy’s line “I am remade, but not by you, by the one you should not have killed.” which i think is one of the most important lines in discerning between playing as william or michael. if you had been playing as michael, then the only character that could possibly be counted as “the one you should not have killed” would have been evan, as he was the only one killed by michael. however in a single line, nightmare freddy implies: he is evan (“I am remade”), he is addressing william, who said he would remake him (“But not by you”), and he is not “the one you should not have killed” (“by the one you should not have killed.”)

the most common theory on the identity of the “one you should not have killed” lies in one of the original five children, cassidy, who was present as golden freddy in the earlier games. this child is generally viewed as being the angriest (sans maybe charlie) at william, and the most aggressive. part of this draws from an easter egg in UCN: one “animatronic” you can enable when playing is called old man consequences, and through him you can get to a secret area. this area is a pixelated lake where old man consequences is fishing, and you, now playing as a pixelated golden freddy, can talk to him. When you do, he invites you to sit with him as there’s “nowhere else to go”, and says “Leave the demon to his demons. Rest your own soul. There is nothing else.” the implications here being that golden freddy is the one soul that refuses to move on to the point of having to meet old man consequences. and the only person that cassidy hates enough to torment for eternity would be william, who killed cassidy and many other children, not michael who killed one child that wasn’t even cassidy.

there is a bit of a flaw in the theory though lol, in that william afton, as springtrap, is an animatronic in this game. his only voice line is his “I always come back” quote (honestly extremely funny given his gameplay function is that he tries to attack exactly one time in the night and then. doesn’t come back). given how this game isn’t considered canon and so the stakes are lower in terms of trying to be Correct, i like to interpret springtrap’s presence as being either the presence of the animatronic itself or william’s past haunting him, ghost of christmas past style but with a lot more murderous intent involved. (also from a meta standpoint obviously springtrap is gonna be in the big finale epilogue game, especially since he was the only actual animatronic in fnaf 3)

all of this said, though, there’s an animatronic named Mr. Hippo, whose voicelines are. a bit lengthy. he goes on tangents for about three minutes, telling the player one of four rambling stories, but those stories include lines like “I said ‘Orville, I have a story.’ And he said to me ‘What’s the significance of the story?’ and I said to him, ‘Orville, not every story has to have significance, y'know? Sometimes, y'know, sometimes a story is just a story. You try to read into every little thing and find meaning in everything anyone says, you’ll drive yourself crazy.’” and “So you may be asking yourself, ‘How did I go from sitting by the falls drinking lemonade, to being wedged in the air duct? Not only with Orville, but with an entire assortment of fruity colored friends.’ Well there’s uh, there’s really no good answer to that, but perhaps I’ve met a demise of my own at some point, and this is my afterlife or my dream, whatever it might be, I honestly don’t know. Or maybe it doesn’t mean anything at all. Maybe it doesn’t mean anything at all.”

so yknow. take any theorizing of this game with a grain of salt lol

Growing up, Davey hated his birthday.

It’s bad enough he doesn’t even get his own, but everyone always assumed it to be or tried to make it Halloween themed.

He’s glad he got over the first part quickly – Sarah’s his best friend, the other side of his coin, how could he not want to share it with her? – but the second part stays staunchly true until sophomore year of undergrad.

His friends tried to throw a surprise party for him freshman year, but it had turned out to be a costume party. Davey had tried his best to smile and pretend like he wasn’t frustrated, but he had clearly failed because Katherine had come to him the next day to apologize. Davey appreciated the sentiment, both because he knew she meant it and also was so clearly hungover it was amazing she could stand.

Then Racer’s brother transferred in during the spring semester, and Davey’s whole world changed.

For one thing, he’s immediately dubbed Davey; Crutchie later explains that that’s how Jack shows affection (which makes Davey wonder about Crutchie and Jack’s friendship, but it’s also between the two of them, so if Crutchie is alright with it, who is Davey to say anything).

For another, Jack manages to actually break Davey out of his shell. The others have always invited Davey to things, of course, and dragged him when it was clear he needed a break, no matter how much he denied it. Jack, though…Jack didn’t need to drag or needle or bribe Davey to do things. All it took was the tip of his head, a vaguely pleading look, and Davey was powerless to say no. On the (mortifyingly rare, if he’s being honest) Davey convinced Jack that no, actually, he needs to stay in and study for this class or finish that essay, Jack would accept it and just…stay. He’d throw himself onto Davey’s threadbare couch he got probably fourth hand from a friend of a friend of a classmate, scrolling through his phone or doing his own homework, seemingly content to sit in silence while Davey worked.

Davey had never had someone he could sit in comfortable silence with. It was exhilarating.

The only problem, Davey realizes very quickly, is Jack loves playing host and will take any opportunity to throw a party. Such as, say, a birthday.

Over the course of almost a year, Davey watches with both fondness and apprehension as Jack throws big, often themed parties for each of their friends. Mush’s birthday in February is an explosion of pink and hearts, Race’s birthday in June is Cars themed; even Les gets the Jack Kelly Party treatment when his birthday circles around in July, a Minecraft theme complete with a cake that looks like it’s made out of blocks.

(Davey had already been infatuated with Jack, but that, he thinks, is what made him realize he’s in love.)

Suffice it to say, Davey was nervous when October starts. He knows Jack’s going to be planning something, and the theme is so obvious. At the same time, though, it’s not like he can just go up to Jack and say, “Hey, I know you’re planning a birthday party for me, but if it’s Halloween themed I might cry.” Not only would it be rude and presumptuous, but Davey would also rather die than initiate confrontation.

His birthday’s on a Tuesday, so he’s not surprised when Jack says to come over on the Friday before. He spends the day telling himself that it’s going to be fine, at the end of the day it’s just a party. Just one night, and it’s with his friends so it won’t even be that bad.

Davey’s still telling himself this when he buzzes Jack’s apartment.

Not even a second passes before Jack’s voice crackles through the buzzer. “That you, Dave?”

“No,” he replies drily. “It’s the Queen of England.”

There’s an awful static noise that Davey thinks is Jack laughing. “What’s another zombie wandering the city tonight, eh?”

Davey manages a weak smile, even though Jack can’t see him, but is saved from answering by the door buzzing open. He takes a deep breath and enters the building, walking up to Jack and Spot’s apartment on the fourth floor. He pauses at the door, shaking out his hands as he makes a face at the Halloween themed doormat, and then knocks.

“It’s open!” Jack’s voice calls from inside.

Davey opens the door, not even getting out half his greeting before a group of people yells, “SURPRISE!”

He blinks in, well, surprise as he takes in the room. Seemingly everyone he’s ever met is crammed into the small living room, and while some are in costume, it’s not general Halloween fare. No, people are dressed like…

“Is this Star Trek themed?” Davey asks, looking around at the decorations. There’s a banner of triangles in red, yellow, and blue that state Happy Birthday!; a table across the left wall is covered in a plastic tablecloth printed with different characters from the original series, with more red, yellow, and blue desserts and what looks like a cake shaped like the Enterprise.

Davey quickly scans the crowd, needing to find Jack. When he does, he’s almost shocked to find him dressed like Captain Kirk.

“Happy birthday, Davey!” he crows, making his way through the crowd to throw an arm around Davey’s shoulders. “Sorry if it’s cheesy, but you’ve been so into your Star Trek rewatching this semester I couldn’t think of anything else.”

“Jackie, it’s perfect,” Davey says, unable to keep the sheer sincerity and fondness out of his voice. He’s rewarded by Jack flushing red, even stuttering when he moves his hand to between Davey’s shoulder blades and gently pushing him forward and saying, “C’mon, get a drink. Finch’s been bitching all week about trying to make the perfect cocktail, we gotta see if he did it.”

It’s honestly one of the best birthday parties Davey’s ever had. Even Sarah’s dressed up, Trill dots running down her temples and neck.

“I hope you know this means I’m dragging you to the club for my party next Friday,” she says as she wraps herself around her brother. Senior year of high school, the twins had finally decided that they would have two separate get-togethers with friends for birthdays, alternating who gets the first. “It took Kath, like, an hour to get these dots on me.”

Davey turns his head to press a kiss to the top of hers. “I won’t even complain too much,” he promises. Sarah snorts in disbelief (which, fair) and moves to talk to Ritz as Racer and Albert come up to pull him into hugs and back slaps.

It’s after midnight before he realizes he needs a breather, which is something of a record for him just in general. The party’s still in full swing – minus Les, who managed to make it to ten o’clock before falling asleep and being relocated to Spot’s room – so nobody notices when Davey slips out of the window in Jack’s room to sit on the fire escape.

Or…not nobody, apparently, because only a few minutes later Jack’s voice quietly calls out, “Mind if I join you?”

Davey scoots over to make space, smiling at Jack as he sits beside him.

“D’ya like the party?” Jack asks. It’s asked casually enough, but Davey can see the uncertainty in his eyes, the way the corner of his grin twitching a bit.

“It’s perfect, Jackie,” Davey assures him just as softly, swaying to the side to gently bump his shoulder against Jack’s. “Not even cheesy at all.”

Jack throws his head back to laugh, and Davey takes the opportunity to stare before Jack’s attention returns to him. “Now that’s a goddamn lie, but I appreciate the sentiment. I know you don’t like Halloween themed shit, so I’m glad I still got a theme that works.”

Davey feels warm to his bones, despite the chill in the air. He’d figured somebody had told Jack about his dislike, probably told him about his party last year, but he realizes that Jack did just know. They’ve been like that since meeting, now that he thinks about it. He and Jack just clicked, understanding each other in a way nobody else seemed to.

Davey sways back into Jack, this time allowing himself to lay his head on Jack’s shoulder. “It’s perfect,” he insists.

An arm comes up to wrap around Davey’s shoulder, pulling him closer to Jack’s side. “Happy birthday, Davey.”

how does the main cast feel about their birthday? do their feelings change through the series?

i cant really answer this in the context of canon because birthdays arent really celebrated! its moreso coming of age ceremonies, and its mostly just nobles and high ranking animals that do that kind of stuff. im sure there are some outliers here and there.

but i can answer this in the context of the human au!

laxo and kenta both grew up in a household that was unable to fully celebrate birthdays due to finances, so their answers are a bit complicated. laxo probably has more negative feelings about his birthday since he associates it with putting a burden on others to give him something, which stems from his dad always trying to get him something when he was still around, and laxo always noticing how stressed he was about doing so. kenta's feelings about it are a bit more positive. even though raven never did anything for her birthday outside of a cold acknowledgement, laxo always tried his best to give her something, which was usually one of his homemade flower charms. i like to think that little tradition of him giving her homemade things extends into their adulthood. c: laxo, on the other hand, constantly tells the people around him not to get him anything when his birthday comes around, because people giving him gifts makes him feel bad. he definitely gets better about letting people be kind to him as the story goes on.

maya is a twin, so she shares her birthday with her brother, axel. because of this, she always associated her birthday as something that she shares with him. so when they lose touch after she runs away, she cant shake that association. as such, she cant help but feel shame whenever her birthday comes around, even though she's steadfast in believing that running from home was the best thing for her. i think the only way for her to completely shake that feeling is to get closure from him.

after his mom died, kane always saw his birthday as something that wasn't for him, but for the people who were throwing the celebration, namely feli. you can imagine that she goes all out with the festivities, while making passing comments about her expectations of him as he gets older. when his mom was alive, his birthdays were a lot more personal and actually about him. but when he started living with feli, they just became hollow and superficial, turning into another reminder of her crushing expectations for him. so the excitement he feels for them turns into dread. im sure that changes once he gets away from that toxicity. c:
