Bro, I feel so bad for Kenta.
Like, just imagine having this twisted concept of fatherly love because you don't know better than being ordered around to do bad things by a fucking piece of garbage that adopted you and gave you a "home", and then loving one of those children that grew up with you.
Wanting to be with him but being unable to understand why him and everyone leaves because of your "dad", because you think that is what a father is like, a complete son of a bi*ch.
And then your beloved daddy gives you the order to kill that person you love.
Imagine the confusion he must be going through, between doing the "right thing" and obey because daddy told you so, or doing what you truly want, to love that person.

KimKenta WIP Snippet
I'm getting close to halfway done with this and should be able to post the first chapter within the week. I truly have no idea how this story will hit, but I adore it. Lots of emotional hurt/comfort, touch-starvation, pack feels, and praise kink coming y'all's way soon
The dog sneezes—an adorable, snorting sound that Kim is unable to fully appreciate, he is preoccupied with the bubbles flying straight into his eyes. He swears quietly, rubbing at his face with his sleeve. When he closes his eyes, he has a tub full of wet, sad dog.  When he opens them, he has a tub full of wet, stunned, naked man covered in dog shampoo. A familiar face looks back at him—eyes wide, lips parted in surprise, black hair sticking to his pale skin. Kenta. Kim swears—loudly this time—and jumps to a standing position, toppling over his stool. His hand flails out towards the wall and catches on the shower curtain, yanking it out of place. The entire rod comes crashing down over their heads, and Kim barely has time to react before Tony Chen's bodyguard-slash-murderer is splashing out of the tub and throwing himself at him—as if a hollow metal rod posed a real threat to Kim. As if the real threat weren't Kenta himself.  But this isn't where the story begins.  It begins with the last time Kim saw Kenta—well, the last time he saw him looking like a human, that is. When Kenta had been kneeling on the ground, weeping at his father's feet, his hands covered in the man's blood. Kim's attention had been split in two—torn between the desire to be a stalwart comfort for his new friends as Way lay dying in Babe's arms, and the need to keep a wary eye on his former captor-slash-rescuer.  Kenta was a difficult man to predict, as Kim had learned in the hard way. His face revealed little of his intention, his actions were contradictory, and his motives had never been clear—at least not to Kim. So when the man stood up on shaky feet and power-walked out of the main chamber with his head hung low, Kim did what felt natural and followed after him. But when he entered the hallway, he found that Kenta had disappeared completely. The halls were empty and eerily quiet after the explosive chaos just moments earlier. The only being in sight was one of Tony's guard dogs, who stood trembling in the corner, its tail tucked between its legs.  No—current, present-day Kim hasn't connected the dots yet. Give him a few moments, and a dry towel, and he'll get there. Several-long-months-ago Kim, however, softened immediately. He approached the dog slowly, indirectly, letting his scent drift across the room. The dog growled at him—a high pitched, desperate sound, like it was begging Kim to stay back. "Hey," Kim said, his voice low and soothing. "It's me. Remember me?"  Well, perhaps the story doesn't begin here either.

Digimon Tamers - Volume 2
It turns out this series is super out of print and rare. My library only has the first 2 volumes, so I'll be reading the rest after this one online (if you want to buy it it's like $80-$100 per volume!) It's a little bit of a relief honestly, because the volume that I got from the library is pretty crusty and battered. I think I saw some dried shredded cheese on some of the pages 🤢 Really shows who the audience is.
Ch. 8
This manhua has really bad continuity and no sense of space. Characters will just pop out of nowhere. Culumon is the worst offender, but in this chapter there were a bunch of dramatic scenes between Rika and Renamon and then it just randomly turned out that Takato and Jian were watching the whole time but not saying anything? Riiiight.
I was really confused at the end and thought that Yamaki was saying he created a digimon but it was actually a really clumsy flashback to the original digimon programmers. Confusing panels...
Ch 9
Wow, the Devas arc already, it obviously felt like it took a lot longer to get here in the anime. I wonder if they'll do all the Devas or condense them/do some off screen?
At least one thing that's nice about this manga is that I can take in the Devas designs without them jumping around too much.
Ch. 10
Some of these jokes are flying over my head. Takato tries to name his group of friends "team rock" and he mentions "a skinny guy on TV who talks about the power of positive thinking." I wish they would cut out the unfunny, outdated material and just tell the damn story >:/
Worst boys Hirokazu and Kenta show up to reestablish themselves as part of the party...yaaay
Didn't realize that MegaloGrowmon was called WarGrowlmon in the dub. I guess it is kind of nice to keep the naming conventions more consistent. "Megalo" is sort of a weird prefix (megalomania?)
Ch. 11
I'm still obsessed with Jian's computer that can read trading cards as if they were CD-ROMs. I wish that technology existed!
Two perfect evolutions in one chapter? Pretty rushed but okay...they still looked cool. (Taomon and Rapidmon). I think the Wonderswan card game rot my brain a little cuz when I saw Rapidmon I was thinking about all the option cards I could use with him.
Ch. 12
Other than my fave Antylamon, I think Indramon is the most memorable of all the devas. His design is really unique, he's massive, and he kicks the shit outta Impmon. I like his emo hair too lol
When they realize that Hirokazu's homemade blue card works I'm surprised they didn't move onto a counterfeit card making scheme after that. I just it only works if it was made with pure intentions or something.
Ch. 13
Why is Juri's dub name "Jeri" when "Julie" was right there?
Damn, they really killed any suspense with Makuramon's intro there. In the anime he's presented as a kid at first but here they showed him as a kid but then slapped the name tag "Makuramon" right next to him...
They skipped a bunch because Juri just magically knows that Guilmon exists. They showed Hirokazu and Kenta meeting him, but not her. Oh well, I guess.
Ch. 14
Calling Juri, Hirokazu and Kenta "groupies" is pretty funny, not gonna lie. So accurate.
I like that they're clearly ID-ing each deva as its corresponding zodiac animal. I think there was a little bit of that in the anime, but not as spelled out as it is here. Usually I don't like to be spoon fed, but there's something satisfying about them saying "that's the boar, that's the monkey, etc."

so you wanna know more abt mariko's family
behold, some background and meta abt mariko's family. doesn't really fit into the fic proper (much to my chagrin) but should give some helpful context both to mariko, and the events of ch 18. it's also just a bunch of behind-the-scenes world building, bc i find that fun.
copying from some of my chats w verm:
mariko's family moved to konoha AFTER the kyuubi thing bc they were hoping to avail themselves of the hospital (her mom's health stuff), which is why kaya gets pushed into becoming a medic/ninja. mariko is also encouraged but she would've done it anyway, so she genuinely felt no pressure abt that one lol
but this means there's a lot happening in terms of her family not knowing abt naruto and the kyuubi
so they're like 'rough around the edges but sweet kid who needs food' and they get backlash
that NO ONE can explain
lots of passive-aggressive pushback from the village, but it's literally illegal to tell them anything
and as far as they know uzumaki clan is respectable? like, tragic or whatever, but a big name, so this looks extra baffling to them
her parents actually contemplate leaving konoha a couple times (they're from the capital), but decide to stick it out long enough for the kids to finish academy/become established medics
mariko's family is ordinary, no secret bloodlines or political ties or anything, they just go to konoha bc konoha's hospital is supposed to be the best, can work literal miracles. so this is maybe a year post-kyuubi? i feel like konoha would be eager for some new blood at that pt still; they no doubt took a huge blow to their population, even besides the infrastructure and losing the yondaime, so mariko's family probably isn't the only one to do something similar.
kaya is at the perfect age to start academy, and they absolutely steer both their kids into becoming medics. there might even be weird politics abt providing chakra healing to non-ninja in situations that aren't life-threatening.
i think kanako and kenta would see them pushing their kids into medicine as smart. gathering from the context of canon and elaborating: w civilians, you're pretty limited to whatever the family business/trade is, and i think that ninja villages/being a ninja is actually a lot more egalitarian/meritocratic and free with this. let's maybe also include that they have daughters, and wouldn't be able to totally rely on passing down any business/trade unless they had someone marrying in. so giving their daughters a means of supporting themselves/earning personal prestige is smart.
but so kaya and mariko would be ninja--and thus valuable to the village--but not of a designation that puts them in any particular danger. i also think that being a medic from konoha is the sort of ninja profile that would carry a lot of social currency even with civilians. (this is why mariko's mom makes that comment abt her working in the palace. this also fits in w all the pts abt medicine and politics that we see in haku's chs.)
and yeah, i view the situation w mariko's family as a huge culture clash between--not just civilians and shinobi--but non-konoha civilians and the civilians that were raised in the village. even after over a decade of living there, they're outsiders, and made to feel like it because they had what they saw as basic decency towards their daughter's classmate and then had the audacity to be stubborn about it.
so yes, kenta and kanako were going to leave and move back to the capital once both of their daughters were graduated and working in the hospital. other fics have used as a device abt becoming a shinobi and receiving your hitai-ate as a marker of being a legal adult, and i'm running w that. as far as they're concerned, their daughters would then be adults with stable and respectable work and capable of sustaining themselves, and they could visit each other. i don't think this is irresponsible parenting.
ofc mariko getting assigned to team7 is a wrench in the works. like, a FIELD MEDIC?? (⊙_⊙)
but ok, ok, maybe it's not the worst? she's got a pretty capable sensei (forget that he's popularly nicknamed 'friend-killer kakashi') and naruto is a good boy. not...too sure abt that uchiha kid (they were around for the massacre and were this close to leaving for good bc of it) but it seems like it'll work out?
kaya would have a MUCH more realistic view of the situation than her parents, esp since she's dating a branch member of the hyuuga. but kaya's view is something along the lines of "let's just get mom and dad out of here asap" and then she and mariko can deal with their own problems. (i...really need to give kaya her own outtake...)
but yeah, everything is a disaster and it's delicious

More tidbits from Still Runner Ch 2. for you all :) This time, David Finlay haunts the Jay >:)
Tagging @naritaren, @sarahcakes613, @nagdabbit, @blizzardsuplex @shes-a-voodoo-child, @doublearmbars, @limbreaper if you want to share!
-
A low drone comes in from the speakers and I snap upright. The Club’s theme. David swaggers in, shoulders decked with knives, like he’s the Switchblade now. The crowd isn’t really buying him as leader yet. My stomach churns. In front of him, Phantasmo pulls out a sign, admiring it. David rips it in half.  It should make me happy, shouldn’t it? Seeing discord in my absence. Kenta stalks in behind, boredom in his eyes. No, seeing this just makes me feel sick. I promised to be there. And they’re – fractured.
It’s a week old match, so I skip away to David’s comments– big talk about taking down baby boy Umino. I know that kind of talk well. David Finlay is a killer now. I’ve been waiting – so long to see him take that up. The sick feeling in my stomach intensifies. I wanted him to come into his own but never…replace me.
I could watch him lose to SANADA. But I don’t…think that will make me feel any better.

thinking about my fic unsolicited musings, specifically thinking about Ch 3 of fuck all clue...
I think there is something that means a lot to me about the idea of someone...really taking the time to think through and speak carefully about some kind of break in a relationship. It’s like. The thinking is a love language, but one that is labor that mostly goes unspoken, right? If you have a conflict with someone you love, it is an act of love to sift through the details of that carefully, to consider their perspective and sort out as much as possible what your needs actually are. To look at the wreck without flinching or brushing it under the rug. It can take a really long time, and it's hard to know when exactly that work will come out or be recognized/realized. It might even amount to nothing.
It’s somewhere along the ethos of “say it as kind as you can manage, while acknowledging that might still cause conflict”. What hits me a lot about Ch3 of fuck all clue is that each of them have taken the time to do that, separately, and that chapter is like. The realization of it.
It’s also kind of the whole thing about Sighted Crows, though I feel in that case the conflict manages to be a lot more one-sided, like. Even though the conflict is knotted and the characters are utterly ill-equipped to understand it like...okay, yes, Angel Eyes is the one at fault.
It hits me a lot that even though yes, I feel like Shibata is the one that actually apologizes, yes also Kenta threw stones in response to that. Hard, and hurtfully. And this is all in the backdrop of like, a decade or so of unspoken stuff that they both participated in shoving under the rug (for whatever reasons they told themselves: it’s not reciprocated (Kenta) // I wouldn’t give him enough time/would be a shit partner anyways (Shibata).
Anyways long story short, that scene means a lot to me because that more than anything is the result of the thinking-labor. They don’t blow up or hurt each other precisely because both of them have been thinking a lot, and despite their dysfunction, doing their damndest not to hurt each other. So yes, as bleak and hurtful as all that realization is, there is still something there for them. And yes, as much as all the time one spends spinning wheels and occasionally venting to a friend about a lover, a loved one you have a problem with -- sometimes they meet you where you’re at, and that shit is worth it. It starts to make sense.

KimKenta WIP snippet
anyone want some Kenta whump that doesn't involve Tony
I’m hmmmm maybe halfway through this draft and should be able to post it by the end of the week, unless I keep adding more scenes, which could happen.
Kim reaches his hand out and grabs at the back of Kenta’s hoodie, yanking him towards the window. “Give me the gun,” he growls, and this time Kenta obeys. Kim covers Kenta’s back, firing towards the guards, while Kenta squeezes past him. It’s inelegant—Kenta struggles through the window, and Kim finds himself wishing they had special equipment with them, like in a spy movie. A smoke grenade, for the guards. A grapple hook, for a smooth getaway. Or perhaps a partner that he could let himself completely trust. On any given day, it's a coin toss as to whether Kim is more comfortable around Winner or Kenta. Winner at least has clear motivations. He wants money, and Pete has plenty of it. But Kenta remains a closed book to Kim. He says he's not interested in redemption, or forgiveness, and Kim can't figure out what it is that he's after. Kenta tugs at Kim’s sleeve once he’s outside, and Kim swings back out of the window. He slides the gun neatly into Kenta’s shoulder holster and watches as Kenta's breath catches in his throat. His metallic, coppery scent is stronger than usual tonight, and it fills Kim's nose in an almost unpleasant way. They clamber downwards, holding onto the concrete ledge and dangling off the side of the building. Kim takes a deep breath, looks over at Kenta, and nods once, before letting go. It’s a painful fall—as much as the dense bushes break the impact, Kim knows he’ll feel this for days. But his limbs are all in one piece, if not his dignity; he rolls out of the bushes with leaves still clinging to him. Kenta is on hands and knees on the ground, breathing heavily, like the fall took it out of him. He's got one hand pressed tightly to his side, and Kim feels an unexpected, cold sense of dread trickle down his spine when the man doesn’t get up. A car skids to a halt on the street in front of them and honks twice. Dean. “Come on,” Kim whispers, hooking his hand under Kenta’s arm and pulling him to his feet, dragging him under the cover of the trees before the guards can spot them. Kenta stumbles unsteadily and leans into Kim, like he can't support his own weight, and that's when it fully clicks. “Damnit, Kenta, were you shot?” “… I’m fine,” Kenta replies hoarsely.
Edit: Ch. 1 here
