JJ’s loafers clicked softly on the polished floor as he walked into the ballroom, the scent of expensive perfume and overripe fruit hanging heavy in the air. There was something about these events that always made him feel out of place. The Kooks thrived on it—this display of excess, of wealth that didn’t belong to them but was flaunted like some kind of badge. He hated it. And yet here he was, once again, a part of it.
The Midsummer’s Ball wasn’t just any party. It was the party for the Kooks. Extravagant. Ridiculous. A display of everything they stood for—money, status, and an obnoxious level of entitlement. The country club ballroom glittered with chandeliers, fancy drinks, and a crowd of smug faces that made JJ want to roll his eyes every time someone walked by. If there was a competition for the most extravagant Kook event of the year, this would be the winner. He’d been here before, but it never got easier to stomach.
Tonight, though, there was a sense of something bigger hovering over him. Three things he had to keep in mind, three things that kept him from getting too lost in the sea of perfect hair and oversized smiles.
First, serve drinks. Get the tips. That part was easy enough. He could charm a few of the older women in the crowd, toss out a few sarcastic comments, make them laugh, and pocket a couple extra bills. If he was lucky, he'd avoid the worst of the Kooks' weirdness and maybe even walk out of here with a few hundred bucks.
Second, keep John B safe. It wasn’t just the Kooks that bothered him. John B was—well, John B. He had no business being here, and everyone knew it. He didn’t belong in this world, no matter how much he tried to act like he did. JJ could already picture the way the Kooks will look at him—especially Topper, who will be practically frothing at the mouth when John B makes his first public appearance with Sarah tonight. Topper wasn’t the only one JJ was keeping an eye on. There were bound to be others, too, people who saw John B as the perfect punching bag. He wasn’t about to let that happen. Not tonight.
And then there was Y/N. The third thing on his mind. Y/N was acting differently tonight. He couldn’t quite explain it—maybe it was the way her eyes were shining a little brighter than usual, or the way she kept smiling at random moments, like she knew some secret that made the whole night seem like a fairy tale. It pissed him off. That wasn’t like Y/N. She was always so... grounded. So real. But tonight? Tonight, she looked like she had everything figured out, like she was actually enjoying herself here. And that confused him. A lot.
He looked at her again as she walked beside him, the soft curve of her lips pulled into a smile. He didn’t return it, of course. Instead, he muttered something about the Kooks and their ridiculous champagne glasses, trying to make light of it, but deep down, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Something about her.
“You good?” he asked, trying to sound casual, but his tone was sharp. Too sharp.
Y/N glanced at him, and for a moment, their eyes met. There was something in the way she looked at him, something that made his heart skip. She was... happy. Too happy. He hated it.
“Yeah, I’m good,” she replied, her voice steady but a little too light. There it was again—that smile. That confidence. It was like she didn’t need to hide anymore. Like she was finally okay with being here, with all of this.
“Right,” JJ muttered, shoving his hands in his pockets as they walked further into the ballroom. “Can’t say I’m feeling the same. This place is a joke.”
She laughed softly, but it wasn’t the same kind of laugh she usually gave. It was lighter, almost... carefree.
He didn’t get it. What changed? He'd known Y/N for years, had watched her go through every kind of mess, every kind of heartbreak, but she’d always had that edge to her, that guarded, "don’t mess with me" attitude. She didn’t belong here, just like John B. But tonight, she didn’t seem to care about that. And that made JJ feel... unsettled.
As they reached the catering area, Pope was already elbow-deep in trays of untouched food, and JJ tossed him a lazy salute. Pope just sighed, his frustration clear even from across the room.
“You set up all this mess yourself?” JJ asked, raising an eyebrow at the absurdity of the spread. There was more food here than anyone could possibly eat, but that didn’t stop the Kooks from acting like it was some sort of prize.
“Do you ever stop complaining?” Pope shot back, adjusting a tray with a little more force than necessary.
“Nope.” JJ grinned back, slipping into his usual easy sarcasm. “The food’s not the problem, Pope. It’s the fact that none of these assholes are even gonna care to finish it. They’ll drink their champagne and pretend to care about all this ‘fancy’ food, and then throw it all away when they’re done, just like everything else in this goddamn world.”
Pope didn’t bother responding. He just continued arranging the food like he didn’t care anymore, which, honestly, he probably didn’t. They both hated being here, surrounded by people who didn’t even see them as human, but the money was good, and the world had a way of forcing them to stay put.
“Yeah, well, don’t forget that we’re all just here to make money,” Pope muttered, and JJ didn’t argue. Pope had long stopped pretending to like any of this. They all had.
JJ’s eyes flicked back to Y/N, still standing by the drink station, her body language more relaxed than he’d ever seen it. She wasn’t looking at him, wasn’t paying attention to him at all. She was too busy talking to some Kook girl about something—probably some stupid brand of perfume or a new designer bag, knowing them.
That smile, though. He couldn’t shake it.
He knew he should focus on the job, on keeping John B safe, on avoiding the Kooks as much as possible. But Y/N? She was making it damn hard to do any of that. It wasn’t just the fact that she was so... different tonight. It was the look in her eyes which looks like she has everything figured out, the way she barely looked at him anymore.
That was the thing about Y/N. She had this way of getting under his skin, making him feel things he didn’t want to feel. Like jealousy. Or uncertainty. He hated it. But he couldn’t just ignore it. Not with the way she’d been acting, not when she seemed like she was in on some secret he wasn’t part of.
He shook his head, forcing himself to focus.
Tonight was about John B. Tonight was about staying one step ahead of the Kooks, about making sure no one touched his best friend.
But damn if that little voice in his head didn’t keep screaming What’s going on with Y/N?
—
The air in the ballroom was thick, suffocating, with the clinking of glasses and the hum of conversation surrounding him. JJ moved through the crowd with his usual swagger, but tonight, it felt different. Tonight, the weight of every Kook’s gaze seemed to land a little harder on his shoulders, and it wasn’t just because of the way they looked at him. It was the way they looked at her—Y/N. She was everywhere, serving drinks and refilling trays with that damn smile on her face, like she actually belonged here.
He’d been trying to keep his head down, serve his drinks, and get through the night without getting caught up in the mess, but every time he glanced in her direction, he found his eyes locked on her. There was something about her tonight that rubbed him the wrong way. She was too damn happy. Too effortless, too easy with the Kooks, laughing at their stupid jokes, making conversation like she wasn’t the same Y/N who used to roll her eyes at every Kook in sight. He couldn’t figure it out.
It wasn’t like Y/N didn’t deserve a little fun. Hell, she was always the one holding things together, making sure everyone else was alright. But this—this wasn’t her. Not the way she was acting. Not the way she was fitting in with them, letting them talk to her like she was one of them. JJ couldn’t stomach it. She wasn’t a part of their world, and for some reason, it hurt to see her acting like she was.
As she passed by him, her tray of drinks balanced effortlessly in her hands, JJ’s eyes tracked her every move. He watched as she made her way over to a table of Kooks—glistening with their designer clothes and condescending grins. They were looking at her like they were interested. And that wasn’t something JJ was prepared to handle.
His chest tightened, a hot wave of jealousy gnawing at him. She handed drinks out with that damn smile still on her face, and that was when he saw him. Rafe. Of course.
Rafe was leaning against the far side of a table, his signature smirk plastered on his face. When Y/N got close, he straightened up, his eyes locking onto hers with a predatory gleam that sent an uneasy shiver down JJ’s spine. As she handed him a drink, a small bracelet glittered on Rafe’s arm. Their fingers brushed as their hands met. But it wasn’t just a casual hand-off. It was too slow, too deliberate. And when their hands lingered for a second too long, JJ felt a surge of irritation.
There was something in the way Rafe looked at her. It was... familler. JJ knew that look. He’d seen it before. It was the look Rafe reserved for people he was too close to—people he thought he had some kind of claim on. And the worst part? Y/N didn’t seem to register it. She didn’t seem to notice the way Rafe’s gaze followed her like a shadow, tracking her every move. JJ’s gut twisted. There was something off about this. And he needed to find out what.
He couldn’t let it slide. Not tonight.
He slipped through the crowd, his eyes never leaving her as he moved toward the bar area where she was. When he finally caught up with her, he tried to keep his voice light, to make it seem like he was just messing around, but the tension in his chest couldn’t be ignored.
“Yo, is Rafe bothering you?” He kept his tone casual, but there was a sharp edge to his words.
Y/N barely looked at him when she responded, waving him off like it was nothing. “No, not at all, JJ. He’s fine.”
But there was something in the way she said it, something that didn’t sit right with him. Her voice was too soft, too dismissive. And the way she wasn’t meeting his eyes? That was another red flag. Something was wrong, and JJ didn’t like it.
His fingers itched to pull her aside, to demand that she tell him what was going on. But he couldn’t. Not yet.
Before he could press her, the doors of the ballroom swung open, and suddenly, the atmosphere shifted. The crowd’s murmur grew louder, more excited. JJ turned to see who had arrived, and his eyes narrowed when he saw them.
Sarah and John B.
Sarah looked every bit the Kook she was, her smile dazzling, her confidence radiating from her. She had the whole place eating out of her hand, even without trying. But John B? His messy hair, that plain shirt—it was like a neon sign saying, I don’t belong here. JJ watched him shift uncomfortably under the weight of every Kook’s scrutinizing gaze, his eyes darting around the room as if he was looking for a way out.
The whispers started instantly, loud enough for JJ to catch a few snippets.
“Is that John B?”
"Why is he here? Who invited the pogues?”
JJ’s jaw clenched as the cruel laughter followed. The Kooks weren’t just gossiping—they were tearing John B apart like he was some kind of freak show. And JJ wasn’t about to stand for it. His blood boiled, and he could feel every bit of their judgment like it was a physical punch.
“Damn, they’re ruthless,” Pope muttered from behind him. JJ didn’t need to look to know Pope was just as pissed. They both hated the way the Kooks treated people like John B.
“They always are,” JJ growled, scanning the room for any sign of Topper. Sure enough, he spotted the smug bastard weaving through the crowd, zeroing in on John B like he was prey.
“John B,” JJ muttered under his breath. “I’m coming, man.”
As he pushed his way through the crowd, JJ’s gaze caught on Kie. She had just entered, and damn, she looked hot. The way her violet dress clung to her, the confident smile she wore, the way she moved—JJ couldn’t help but stare for a second. He quickly shook himself out of it, though. Now wasn’t the time for distractions.
Kie noticed him watching, raising an eyebrow as she approached. “What’s got you all worked up?”
JJ nodded in John B’s direction. “The usual. Kooks being Kooks.”
“Figures.” She crossed her arms, eyes darting between JJ and the group of Kooks. “You’ve got this under control, right?”
“Yeah,” JJ said, his voice low, still watching Topper’s every move. “Just gotta make sure they don’t escalate things.”
Topper was already making his move, slithering through the crowd with that smug, self-satisfied grin on his face. JJ knew exactly what was coming. Topper always had a way of making things worse. Always knew how to rile up the Kooks, to make them turn on anyone they saw as beneath them. And right now? John B was the perfect target.
“John B,” JJ muttered under his breath, more to himself than to anyone else. He started weaving through the crowd, cutting a path toward his best friend.
He found John B by the punch bowl, looking a little lost, a little out of place, his hands hovering awkwardly by his side as Sarah chatted with some of her friends.
“Yo, man,” JJ called out, tapping him on the shoulder. “You gotta watch out. Topper and his crew are already talking about you. They’re looking for an excuse to start something.”
John B glanced at him, then at Sarah, his frown deepening. “I can’t leave. I promised Sarah I’d stay with her.”
JJ sighed. He hated this. He hated that John B felt like he had to put himself through this just to be with Sarah. But he knew how much she meant to him.
“Just keep your head down,” JJ warned, his voice low but firm. “Don’t give them an excuse. And don’t let Sarah get too close to them.”
Pope and Kie appeared behind them, looking just as concerned. “We’ll make sure he’s good,” Pope said, giving JJ a reassuring look.
JJ gave a tight nod, but as he turned away, his eyes flicked back to the crowd. And there, lurking in the periphery, was Rafe. Again. Always watching Y/N. Never letting her out of his sight.
The night passed in a blur of drinks, whispers, and quiet tension. JJ kept a close eye on John B, moving through the crowd like a shadow. And Rafe—Rafe was everywhere, always within arm’s reach of Y/N, watching her with that same unsettling gaze. It was like the guy had an invisible tether to her, never letting her out of his sight.
JJ wanted to intervene, wanted to ask what was going on, but something told him that wasn’t his place. It wasn’t the time.
—
The Kooks were loud, the music was booming, and JJ had been doing everything in his power to keep an eye on John B, but it wasn’t easy with the way things were escalating.
Suddenly, he saw John B make a move toward the back hall. JJ’s gut twisted. Don’t go alone, man.
“Pope!” JJ called out, his voice sharp. “Kie!”
Pope was already moving toward him, and Kie was right behind, the two of them looking as restless as he felt.
“John B’s heading to the bathroom,” JJ said urgently. “Topper and his crew are on the prowl. We need to go.”
“Of course, this is exactly what we need right now,” Pope muttered, his eyes scanning the crowd. Kie’s expression darkened as she followed him through the ballroom.
JJ’s eyes flicked back to Y/N for a brief moment, just enough time for him to catch a glimpse of her laughing with the Kooks. She didn’t look like she was in trouble—yet. But Rafe’s presence still gnawed at him. His focus snapped back to John B.
“Go,” JJ ordered. “I’ll keep an eye on things from behind.”
Pope, Kie, and JJ cut through the crowd, weaving between people like shadows. As they hit the back hallways, JJ cursed under his breath. They were too late.
Topper was standing at the bathroom door, the rest of his gang flanking him like a pack of wolves. John B was stuck, looking trapped as Topper smirked at him.
“Well, well, well,” Topper’s voice oozed with malicious satisfaction. “If it isn’t the Pogue who thinks he’s good enough for Sarah.”
JJ’s heart hammered as he pushed forward, Pope and Kie right on his heels.
“John B,” JJ called, voice low, but loud enough to be heard. “You alright?”
John B shot him a quick, almost relieved look. “You know how it goes, man. Topper’s just pissed I’m with Sarah.”
“Yeah, I figured that much,” JJ grumbled. He kept his gaze locked on Topper. “You need to move, man. This isn’t the place for this shit.”
“Not until I’m done,” Topper sneered, stepping forward. “You think you can walk around here like you belong, B? You’re nothing but trash.” He shoved John B, sending him stumbling back into the hallway wall.
JJ’s blood boiled. “Get your hands off him, Topper.”
But Topper wasn’t done. He swung at John B again, his group following in his lead. The hall was tight, but there was enough room for fists to fly. Pope stepped forward to back John B up, while Kie, cool-headed as always, sized up the situation.
Before JJ could get another word in, a punch was thrown, connecting with John B’s jaw. JJ jumped into the fray, grabbing Topper’s arm and twisting it behind his back, slamming him into the wall with a sickening thud. Pope had Topper’s lackeys occupied, keeping them from ganging up on John B.
Kie, standing near the ornate curtains that hung along the hallway, caught a glimpse of the situation escalating. Her eyes darted between the fight and the tension in the room. Without a second thought, she grabbed one of the nearby candle holders, lighting the end of one of the velvet curtains on fire.
The flames caught quickly, sending a wave of heat and light through the hallway. The Kooks’ eyes widened in fear as the fire began to lick the sides of the curtains.
“Shit!” Kie hissed, grabbing the fire extinguisher from the wall. She quickly sprayed the flames, but not before the fire had spread enough to cause a ruckus. The Kooks were freaking out, scrambling to get away from the heat.
“Let’s go! Now!” JJ shouted.
They didn’t need any more prompting. The Kooks scattered, some tripping over their own feet, others too stunned to do much. The fight had lost its steam as the chaos of the fire consumed the hall. JJ grabbed John B’s arm, pulling him away from the wreckage.
“You good?” JJ panted.
“Yeah, yeah,” John B replied, wiping his face. “Let’s get the hell outta here.”
They headed for the back door, but as JJ looked behind them, the sound of the fire alarms blaring and the chaos of the guests flooding into the hallway only added to the madness. JJ scanned the panicked faces in the ballroom but Y/N was nowhere to be found. JJ did another scan and his blood ran cold. Y/N was missing, but so was Rafe. With this realization, JJ turned on his heel and ran towards the parking lot.
But as soon as JJ stepped outside, the cold night air hit his skin like a slap. The parking lot was eerily quiet compared to the chaos of the country club, the only sounds being the distant blare of fire alarms and the low hum of the streetlights. He was scanning the area, trying to catch his breath after the mess with Topper and his crew, when something—someone—stopped him in his tracks.
His heart skipped a beat.
There, with her back turned to him, was Y/N.
She was farther away than he expected, just past the edge of the parking lot, but there was no mistaking her. Her hair was glowing in the light, illuminated like she was caught in a scene out of a dream. And then, his stomach twisted when he saw him.
Rafe.
His hand was resting low on her back, fingers spread wide as though it was the most natural thing in the world. The scene hit JJ like a punch to the gut. The sight of Rafe, standing so close to Y/N, smiling down at her with that smug, self-assured look—like he owned the damn world—made JJ’s blood boil.
He could feel the heat rising in his chest, the anger flooding through his veins, pushing out everything else. What the hell is going on here? He barely thought it through before his mouth opened.
“Y/N!” he shouted, his voice thick with something between panic and fury. It wasn’t even the volume of his voice—it was the raw emotion in it, the protective streak he hadn’t been able to shake off for months.
Without a second thought, he took two strides forward, every muscle in his body coiled, ready to pull Rafe off her. He wasn’t going to let this happen—not when he thought something was wrong. He couldn’t explain why he felt so suddenly defensive, but seeing her so close to Rafe like that, it triggered something deep in him, something urgent.
But then—
She turned, her face illuminated by the moonlight.
It was subtle at first—just a soft flicker in her expression, but it was enough to make JJ stop dead in his tracks. His heart stuttered, the air in his lungs freezing.
Y/N’s smile wasn’t just a grin—it was something else. The kind of smile that lit up a whole damn room. But it wasn’t just that—it was the look in her eyes, the joy that was shining there like he’d never seen before. She wasn’t just content, or amused. She was radiating happiness. Pure, unguarded, untainted joy. The kind of joy that no one could fake.
Her laugh, soft and melodic, floated on the air, and it was in that moment, standing frozen in the parking lot, that JJ realized something that knocked the wind out of him.
Y/N was happy.
She wasn’t just smiling out of politeness, or trying to force herself through a conversation. No. She was completely in the moment, the tension in her shoulders gone, her whole body open and light in a way he hadn’t seen in months.
A sick feeling washed over him, a cold realization that hit deeper than any punch could.
This wasn’t what he thought it was.
Y/N wasn’t in danger. She wasn’t upset. She wasn’t... anything he’d imagined. Rafe wasn’t threatening her, wasn’t making her uncomfortable. They were just... talking. Laughing. And it wasn’t forced. It wasn’t awkward. It wasn’t the nervous, shaky smile she used to give when she didn’t know where she stood.
Rafe’s hand, still resting on her back, didn’t look threatening anymore. It just looked like... well, it looked like something they’d both been comfortable with for a long time, something that had never been in JJ’s purview.
JJ stood there, watching them for what felt like an eternity. His legs felt heavy, like they were cemented to the ground, his chest tight as he tried to reconcile the image of Y/N—his Y/N—with Rafe standing so close to her, looking at her like she was the only thing that mattered in the world.
His heart hammered, but in the wrong way now. The rage that had flared up in him moments before suddenly deflated, leaving nothing but confusion and guilt.
Y/N wasn’t in trouble. She wasn’t even thinking about him. She was... happy. Happier than he’d seen her in so long. And he had no right to ruin that.
For a moment, JJ just stood there, paralyzed, as the scene played out before him. Rafe was leaning in, saying something, and Y/N was listening, hanging on his every word. JJ’s heart twisted, but he didn’t move. He didn’t step forward. He didn’t charge in like he had originally planned.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he made his decision. He turned, slowly, and walked away from the scene, his feet heavy as they carried him back toward the club. His mind was racing, filled with questions he didn’t have the answers to.
He wasn’t sure, but one thing was certain—whatever was happening between Y/N and Rafe, it wasn’t his place to interfere. Not tonight.
At least, not yet.
—-
A/n: this was highkey not where the story was going to go…. Shoutout to @immyowndefender for putting the thought of JJ figuring the mystery out before Y/N tells him in my head.
I might do a bonus in a bit to see the ball from Y/N’s perspective. There is so much potential for cute rafe moments.
One chapter left!!!

Victor: Miss Kate, may you reach the happiest end with your hands.
V: ——Now, off you go to the twisted fairytale world.
When I awoke, I was on top of the bed within a beautiful castle.
(...This place...)
When I looked around, I realized it was all around silent, as if my surroundings were being blanketed by a curtain of night.
Blond-haired, blue-eyed man: ...Are you awake?
(...Such a pretty person. In fact, I’ve never seen anyone more so than him.)
Blond-haired, blue-eyed man: Good morning, Snow White.
(Wait, I’m Snow White!? So that must mean I was sent to the world of Snow White.)
Kate: ...Um, I apologize for my rudeness seeing as we’ve only just met, but may I ask who you are?
Queen Elbert: ...Elbert. Or as I’m called, ‘the Greedy Queen.’
(This person is the queen?)
In the fairy tale Snow White, the queen was a character who envied the beauty of Snow White, and so she tried to use a poisoned apple to kill her.
(So this person might be the perpetrator of this world’s flaws?)
Kate: ...And why am I in this castle?
Queen Elbert: That’s because the hunter, Roger...
—— Flashback ——
Roger the Hunter: Hey, you there? This lil lady here fainted in the forest.
Queen Elbert: ...I am here.
—— End flashback ——
Kate: The nerve he has to treat people like objects! ...But, thank you for saving me.
This world was slightly different from the events of its fairy tale.
(...It must be because of that ‘missing thing.’)
Queen Elbert: ...Snow White.
Kate: Y-yes...
His [1] rather intense staring rendered me stiff as the beautiful queen tilted his head.
Queen Elbert: Are you hungry?
He took me to the dining room table, where a plethora of dishes were lined up.
(Whoa...there’s fluffy bread, corn potage, and even dessert!)
(Wait, wait, but what if there’s poison in them...)
Queen Elbert: ...Is there something you are unable to eat?
Kate: Ah, um... no.
He pulled back the seat, urging me to sit, before he sat one chair’s length away.
It was as though he was being considerate of how cautious I was.
Kate: Why go this far for me? This is the first time we’ve met, after all.
Queen Elbert: ...Why, you ask... I am looking for the most beautiful thing in the world.
Queen Elbert: And perhaps you may be that very thing.
The smile in his blue eyes was laced with madness and beautifully frightening,
but that faded the next moment like a summer mirage.
Queen Elbert: ...That, and I did not want you to be alone.
Kate: Alone?
Queen Elbert: ...I was thinking being alone the first thing you wake up would be quite lonely.
Madness and kindness... I felt both were a part of his true feelings, and I felt the caution slowly melt away.
Kate: I, too, am looking for a ‘missing thing.’
Queen Elbert: Oh, then... maybe asking Al would do you good.
Kate: Al?
Queen Elbert pointed to a single portrait,
where he and the profile of another person was painted.
Queen Elbert: He is my attendant, Alfons Sylvatica. And he is my mirror.
Kate: A mirror...
Queen Elbert: He will tell me whether something is beautiful... along with many other things.
(Um, so basically I should go and see this Alfons the Mirror person?)
Kate: And where might he be?
Queen Elbert: ??...? (O_O)
Queen Elbert: ...I wonder.
(What.)
After getting permission from Queen Elbert, I searched within the castle, but...
(He’s not here.)
(Or here.)
(He’s nowhere to be found! Which means he’s not in the castle then?)
???: You seem to be in quite a pinch, Snow White. If you’re looking for Alfons the Mirror, he’s at the pub.
(Wh—just now, someone’s voice...)
There on the windowsill was a small bird, the color of night.
Kate: A talking bird...?
Little bird: Talking I do. Here is the twisted fairytale world. So things here might go beyond what you know as common sense.
(I guess that’s true...)
Kate: So he’s at the pub? Thank you for telling me.
Little bird: Oh, and be careful so the back of your neck doesn’t get touched. For he possesses the ability to temporarily overwrite your perceptions.
Little bird: Well then, I’ll be going now!
And so, I left the castle and stepped into the pub, where a salacious fragrance wafted.
(That jet-black haired man from that portrait...)
Alfons the Mirror: For the Snow White who has awakened from her slumber. Would you care for an apple, by any chance?
Alfons the Mirror: ...Ahh, such lines do seem to reflect Elbie well, I’d say.
There he was, the person from the portrait.
Kate: Are you Alfons?
Alfons the Mirror: Indeed, I am that ‘Alfons’ in the flesh. And what brings you waltzing into a place like this so nonchalantly?
Alfons the Mirror: And here I was thinking you would rather be spoiled rotten by that collecting-crazed queen.
(If I’m to get any information, I need to speak openly about the situation I’ve been put into.)
Kate: Actually...
—— Time skip ——
Alfons the Mirror: So you wish to find this ‘missing thing’ to return to reality, I see. And why is it so important that you find it?
Kate: Huh?
Alfons the Mirror: I would imagine there is a mountain of ways you can return back? What need is there to get so bent on finding this missing thing?
Kate: And what other methods are you talking about?
Alfons the Mirror: Oh, you know, hitting your head somewhere, drowning in some river, or dropping dead then and there, all that jazz.
(...Some ‘methods’ those are...)
From the few minutes we’ve been talking, it was more or less pretty clear to me that this person was quite villainous.
Kate: It may be as you say. But... I can’t think that I’m the only one that needs saving.
K: If I find the root of this missing thing, this world won’t be twisted any longer. That is my happy end.
Alfons: Ahha! You foolishly earnest soul, you.
A: Compared to protecting yourself, the fact that this world is twisted and the matters of others is such trivial matters, you know.
Kate: You didn’t need to call me foolish... but anyway, is there a missing thing in this world then?
Alfons the Mirror: Maybe? Or maybe not.
Kate: Then do your best to remember.
Alfons the Mirror: Hmm... it does seem to be on the tip of my tongue...
With an ostentatious air about him, Alfons handed me a cocktail, yellow in color.
Alfons the Mirror: Then, until I remember, may I ask you to join me for a cup?
Kate: ...But, I’m in the middle of searching...
Alfons the Mirror: But that thing won’t be found in a day or two, no? If you don’t take a breather once in a while, it’s going to bite you back, you know.
The voice in my ear and the cocktail he swirled before me caused my rationale to waver a bit.
(...He may have a point. It is true I’ve always been feeling a bit tense.)
Kate: Then... I’ll have a little.
Alfons the Mirror: By all means, go on and down it all. Master, one for me as well.
—— Time skip ——
In a small room at the back of the pub, two shadows swayed.
Alfons the Mirror: Hehe, come now... walk a bit more steady, why don’t you.
Kate: mmm...hic, I gan’t dring...any more...
Alfons the Mirror: Aha, you’re drunk through and through, I see.
When Alfons tried to lay Kate down on the bed, she grabbed tightly around his neck.
Alfons the Mirror: Oh dear...
Such a gesture stemmed from innocence, as if she was a child who lost her way back.
Alfons the Mirror: You shouldn’t embrace men with such a lonely look.
Alfons’ fingers slipped to the back of Kate’s neck as he murmured in her ear.
Alfons the Mirror: I am your very precious lover. Now then, surrender your body and heart to me...
Kate: ...Al...fons?
Alfons the Mirror: How about we forget about aaall the troublesome stuff...
to be continued…

NOTES:
[1] I'm unsure about exactly what pronouns to use here; it was unclear (due to the way pronouns and subjects can be dropped or implied in Japanese). In Elbert's dark if story, for the majority he is referred to with feminine pronouns, and he's referred to as a queen here. I just decided to use masculine pronouns here, but just note it could very much be feminine too.

Victor: Miss Kate. The ability to create the ultimate happy ending lies in your hands. — Now, off into the twisted fairytale world you go.
…
When I woke up, I found myself in a room inside a lavish castle.
(Uhh… right, I’m the “princess” of this country.)
(... Huh? Why do I have memories of that?)
Memories of being raised as the princess of this kingdom slowly came back to me.
(It feels as though I have two sets of memories. One from living in this world, and one from another world.)
Yet, strangely, both felt like they were indeed “mine”.
King: … Are you awake, Kate?
Kate: Good morning, Father.
After a knock, my father entered the room looking concerned.
King: With only a few months left until that wicked fairy’s prophecy is set to come true… I can’t be at peace without personally ascertaining your safety every morning.
I was born as the princess of this country and spent my life living a sheltered life within the castle’s walls.
The reason for that was— a curse.
The fairy who placed the curse on me said, “in 10 years time, the curse will take effect when she pricks her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel”.
— Without any explanation, he returned to his castle hidden deep in the mountains.
In response, my parents gathered every last spinning wheel in the country and destroyed them. They relocated those working in the textile industry to state-run factories, and I wasn't allowed anywhere near them.
Kate: If the curse takes effect, I’ll fall into a deep slumber for 100 years… right?
I muttered based on my memories, and my father nodded with tears welling up in his eyes once more.
(A cursed spinning wheel… the world I strayed into must be the story of “The Thorn Princess¹”.)
¹ “The Thorn Princess” is also commonly known as “Sleeping Beauty”.
(If I go along with the original plot, it’d probably be better to fall into a deep sleep because of the curse, but…)
The man who introduced himself as Victor said that there was “something missing” in this twisted fairytale world.
If I fall asleep before I find it— I won’t be able to look for it for the next 100 years.
(First things first, I need to break this curse to give myself more time to find it!)
Kate: I’m going to ask that fairy to break the curse.
King: W-what!? Absolutely not!!
Kate: You can assign a few guards to escort me.
King: Even the royal guards fear him! I’ve sent people to assassinate him several times, and all of them returned in a dreadful state…!
Kate: Then I’ll go alone. Don’t worry, I can sniff out dangerous places from my experience as a mail carrier.
King: Mail carrier? H-hey, hold on—!
…
(While I did say I’d go alone… it’s still better to be as well-prepared as possible.)
After dodging my panicking father and the royal guards, I made my way to a mercenary recruitment place in the castle town.
Kate: I’d like to hire a bodyguard for my journey…
Since there was a real chance of encountering wild beasts or bandits on my way to the fairy’s castle, I decided to use part of my allowance I had been secretly saving and hire someone to protect me.
However—
Long-Faced Mercenary: Go to the fairy’s castle!? You’d need more than one life to make it there alive!
One-Eyed Mercenary: No way, not doing it! I’ll never go anywhere near that terrifying guy ever again!
— The last person I spoke to fainted the moment the word “fairy” left my mouth, his eyes rolling back in fear.
(It’s just as Father said, the fairy is greatly feared…)
(Looks like it can’t be helped… I’ll just go alone.)
???: Is it true that you want to go to the fairy’s castle?
???: If that’s what you wish for… I’ll be your bodyguard.
I looked up when I heard the voice making the timely offer and saw a young man standing there.
Receptionist: You’re in luck, miss. That guy’s a skilled assassin.
Receptionist: Once he’s targeted someone, he latches onto them like thorny vines, that's why he’s called “Ellis the Briar”.
The receptionist, a young man with mint-coloured eyes, politely introduced him.
The fee he quoted in a low voice was an amount I could afford with my savings.
Ellis the Briar: I only take on jobs from here every now and then, so I didn't know I had a nickname.
Kate: Umm, mister… Ellis the Briar?
Ellis the Briar: Just “Ellis” will do.
After being rejected by many people, Ellis’ offer to be my bodyguard made him look like a knight in shining armour.
Kate: Thank you so much for accepting my request.
Kate: But… are you not afraid of the fairy, Ellis?
Unlike the other mercenaries who fled at the mention of the fairy, this relaxed young man seemed unfazed.
I was a little worried that he might not understand the weight of the situation he volunteered to be involved in.
Ellis: I’ve been burned, frozen, stabbed, and slashed countless times by that fairy.
Ellis: If there’s anyone here who knows exactly how dangerous he is, that’d be me.
Kate: What!? You were burnt— are you alright?
Ellis: Yeah. I can't die, and I’m not afraid, so I’m okay.
(In a strange world where even fairies exist, not dying might be possible too… I guess?)
Ellis: If the journey will lead to your happiness, I’ll go with you.
Kate: A-alright. I’ll be counting on you, Ellis!
Ellis: Fufu… you don’t need to be formal with me.
Ellis: You can relax and speak casually. We’re friends, after all.
(Friends!? Since when…?)
I was a little confused, but the young man’s smile carried not a single hint of malice.
(He’s probably just the kind of person to want to close up the distance between himself and others quickly…)
Kate: Okay… got it.
…
— And so, I embarked on my journey with Ellis, who had a mysterious presence.
There were two paths leading to the fairy’s ancient castle.
One was a horrible half-day route, while the other was a three-day walk on flat ground.
Ellis suggested the easier route, taking into consideration my limited stamina as someone who lived a sheltered life.
— On the second night.
Our journey was progressing smoothly, but I found myself having trouble sleeping.
Ellis: Can’t sleep?
Kate: Yeah… I know I should rest, especially since we’ll arrive at the castle tomorrow. But…
Ellis: Kate, can you come over here?
Kate: …?
I had come to trust Ellis after all the countless times he had helped me during this short journey, and so I unhesitatingly moved closer.
Suddenly, he pulled me by my arm and I fell on top of him.
Ellis: It’s hard to fall asleep on the hard ground, isn't it? You can rest on me instead.
Kate: B-but, then you wouldn't be able to sleep with me weighing down on you…
Ellis: You’re light as a feather, so it’s okay. Go on, you can sleep.
I tried moving away, but Ellis held me close and wouldn't let go.
Kate: You’re being so kind to me because I hired you…
Ellis: Am I? Maybe I’m being this kind only because it's you, Kate.
Kate: …
Thump. Thump. My heart was pounding loudly, but…
As I leaned my head against Ellis’ chest, I realised that I didn’t hear his heart pounding.
(... Am I the only one who feels this way?)
A strange unease crept up to me, but I started feeling drowsy as Ellis gently rubbed my back in a soothing manner.
Ellis: … Why do you want to meet the fairy?
Kate: I want him… to break my curse…
Ellis: I see…
Hearing Ellis’ tender voice, my eyelids slowly grew heavy.
(Ellis took care of everything for me throughout this journey…)
(I must give him a big reward and properly thank him once this is over…)
(Oh. But… I feel lonely thinking we’ll be parting ways.)
While such thoughts crossed my mind, making me doze off… I drifted off to sleep on Ellis.
And because I was asleep, I didn’t hear the words Ellis spoke as he watched me.
Ellis: So you want the fairy to break the curse…
Ellis: That means your feelings haven't changed since “back then”. … I’m so glad.
Even as Ellis slowly wrapped his hand around my neck, I didn't wake.
Ellis: … I want to kill you as soon as possible.
…
I was able to get a good night’s rest thanks to Ellis, and we finally arrived in front of the fairy’s castle.
However, the path leading up to its doors was overgrown with briar, as though rejecting all visitors coming from the outside.
Ellis: We can’t pass here, let’s go around.
Kate: Yeah… oh, can you wait for a quick moment?
Ellis: What’s the matter?
Kate: There’s a little bird trapped in the briar and can’t get out…
I crouched down next to the briar and while being careful not to get pricked, created an opening for the little bird.
It then quickly escaped and flew away.
Kate: Had it stayed trapped in there, it might've died. I’m glad I could save it…
Ellis: … Indeed.
Ellis: Giving even a little bird the choice of where and when it wants to die must make it feel happier, doesn't it?
Ellis: You’re very kind for allowing it to choose how to die, Kate.
(That wasn’t why I saved the bird, but…)
(... Ellis certainly has a strange way of thinking about things.)
I felt a little uncomfortable, but decided not to dwell on it and continue our detour towards the fairy’s castle.
…
Kate: E-excuse me… I’m here to seek help with breaking a curse.
Kate: Is the fairy home…?
???: I am, but I ain't breakin' the curse.
The man who appeared was much younger than I had expected.
Ellis: Jude, I’m back.
Ellis: Let me introduce you, Kate. This is Jude, the fairy.
Kate: …? Hang on a second…
Kate: Why did you say that you're “back”? What's the relationship between you two…?
Ellis: I’ve been working as Jude’s assistant for many years now.
Ellis: When Jude isn’t busy, I sometimes find work at the mercenary recruitment place to keep my skills sharp.
Kate: What… did you say…
Kate: Ellis. You offered to protect me on this journey, helped me so much throughout, and I trusted you…
Kate: Now you’re telling me that you’re an underling of the fairy who cursed me…!?
Ellis: Rather than an “underling”, I’d say we have more of a contractual relationship.
Ellis confirmed it like it was no big deal.
(Ellis had ties with the fairy way before I did…)
(We travelled together and I thought of him as a reliable companion… were those all one-sided on my part?)
Ellis: What’s wrong, Kate? You don’t look so good…
Ellis extended a hand towards me in concern, which I reflexively brushed away.
Kate: … I-I’m sorry.
Kate: I… need to go outside to cool my head.
Overwhelmed by all that just happened within moments, my heart felt like it was on the verge of shattering.
I excused myself and wanted to leave the castle, but the fairy didn’t allow me to.
Jude the Fairy: Ya had a reason for comin' here, didn't ya? Guests oughta stay in the guest room.
Kate: What.
— Jude grabbed my arm and roughly shoved me into the guest without further discussion.
Now that Kate was locked away, the hall went silent once more.
By now, Kate was most likely being served warm tea and snacks in the magical guest room.
Jude: … Ellis. Ya don’t understand human feelings at all, do ya?
Jude: If she finds out that her bodyguard, whom she saw as a friend, actually has a contract with the exact fairy who cursed her, she’ll feel betrayed.
Ellis: Is that so…
Ellis: It’s been five years since I became human, and yet there’s still so much I don’t know.
Jude: It’s “only” been five years.
Ellis: For us, it’s “already” been five years.
Ellis: All I want is to make Kate happy… human emotions are so hard to understand.
Jude: …
Jude clicked his tongue in annoyance, not bothering to hide his irritation with Ellis’ non-human mindset.
He then picked up a sword and slashed at Ellis without hesitation.
— However, Ellis didn't even flinch. Despite being cut, he didn't bleed and was perfectly calm.
Ellis: … It’s pointless no matter how many times you try, Jude.
The wound Jude inflicted on Ellis healed on its own, returning his body to how it was before.
Ellis: As long as Kate doesn't find happiness, I won’t die.
Ellis: Regardless of whether I’m burned, frozen, stabbed, or slashed…

Save Our Lives, Please!! 🙏🏻🥺🍉
Hey everyone, I’m Tareq, writing this from Gaza. My family and I—13 people in total, including my two kids, my brother’s two kids, and the rest of our loved ones—are living in extreme hardship, surrounded by fear and destruction every day. We've been displaced over and over, desperately searching for safety in a world where "safe" doesn’t seem to exist. Each time we leave a place, I pray it will be the last time we’re forced to run. But this nightmare continues, wearing us down until we’re physically and emotionally drained.
I've lost so many loved ones already—my childhood home, my friends, my old life. Now, it’s just me and my brother, @mohammadayyad1 , trying to keep our families alive and away from the ever-present threat of death. Every day, I wake up feeling like this might be our last. We all know death is inevitable, but we're not ready yet. We dream of a chance to live freely and with dignity, away from the trauma of war and violence.
We’re surviving in a flimsy nylon tent, barely big enough for three people, with no privacy and none of the basic comforts a person needs to feel human. The heat during the day is unbearable, and the cold at night seeps right through us. My brother’s wife is six months pregnant, and it breaks my heart to think of bringing a newborn into such dangerous, insecure conditions.
Every morning we’re greeted by the sounds of war, the smell of smoke, and the dread of the unknown. Tanks and helicopters have surrounded us on more than four occasions, and every time we somehow make it out, I wonder how much longer we can go on like this.
I don’t want to die, and I don’t want my family to die. 🥺
We need your help to survive. Your donation could make all the difference, providing us a lifeline and a way out of this nightmare. Together, we can change the future of a family on the brink. Please, join us in this struggle. Help us survive.

Hello everyone, my name is Mohammed and I live in Gaza.
The occupation has destroyed my educational journey 🛑🚨.
I have always dreamed of becoming an engineer, but the war, which has destroyed schools and universities and halted the educational process, in addition to the loss of many students' lives, has greatly affected my ambitions and led to a loss of passion for education. Now, all I wish for is for this war in Gaza to end..
I ask for your help in gathering support to save me and my family, and to leave Gaza so that I can continue my studies and achieve my dream of becoming a skilled engineer.
I need your help to raise money to save myself and my family and to leave the Gaza Strip, so I can continue my education and achieve my goal of becoming a skilled engineer.
I am working hard to achieve this goal despite the challenges I face in my daily life here. Life in Gaza is filled with difficulties, but I am determined to continue my education and achieve my dreams, no matter the circumstances.

— Christmas Won't Be The Same Without You.
°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・°❀⋆.ೃ
Pairing: Daisuke x GN! Reader
Warnings: None, just fluff again :3
Wc: 1.3k+
Author's Note: Tadaa!! It's almost Christmas time baby! I'm super duper excited as it is already half of November!! Are you all ready to celebrate it, cause I sure am!
The snow was falling softly outside, coating the world in a blanket of white. The small town where Daisuke had grown up was quiet, the streets lined with festive lights and decorations. Inside his parents' house, however, there was nothing quiet about it. The living room was alive with the hum of Christmas music playing softly in the background, the scent of pine and cinnamon filling the air, and the soft crackle of a fire burning in the hearth. It was the perfect Christmas setting, and you were sharing it with Daisuke.
“Can you believe it?” Daisuke said, his voice full of excitement as he stood beside you in the entryway. His eyes sparkled with that familiar joy you adored. “Christmas at my parents’ house. I'm sure they're just as excited you are to meeting each other!”
You smiled at him, feeling a warmth spread through you as he took your hand, pulling you into the house. “I’m really happy to be here with you, Daisuke. This place feels so… cozy.”
His grin widened. “It’s definitely cozy. And my mom’s cooking is legendary, so get ready for some serious holiday feasting. You might not even have room for dessert by the end of the night.”
You laughed, feeling your stomach growl at the thought of what awaited. You’d heard a lot about Daisuke’s mom’s cooking, but this would be your first time tasting it. You could already smell the roast turkey and baked goods wafting from the kitchen.
The house was warm, full of life, and adorned with decorations that felt like they had been carefully placed with love. Christmas stockings hung from the mantle above the fireplace, each one bearing a name stitched in gold thread, and a grand tree stood in the corner, its branches weighed down with ornaments, tinsel, and fairy lights. The atmosphere was peaceful but bustling, with Daisuke’s parents—his mother in a festive red apron and his father pulling drinks from the fridge—filling the space with energy and laughter.
Daisuke led you to the living room where his family was already gathered. His parents, always warm and welcoming, greeted you with open arms.
“Ah, there you are, so you're the one my son keeps going on and on about!” His mother beamed as he mumbled something to her, seeming embarrassed she would expose him about that. She then stepped forward to give you a hug. “We’ve been waiting for you both. Everything’s ready for dinner, but we can always add more if you’re hungry before the big meal!”
“You must be starving after the drive!” his father added with a grin, holding out a glass of eggnog. “Don’t be shy, help yourself.”
You chuckled and accepted the drink, glancing over at Daisuke, who was practically glowing in his own way, standing close by with a proud smile.
“You must be excited to have us here,” you teased.
He nodded eagerly. “Are you kidding? I’ve been counting down the days to Christmas here with you and my family. I think I’ve spent almost every Christmas here since I was a kid, and this time it’s even better because you’re with me.”
The sincerity in his voice made your heart skip a beat. There was something about being here, in the warmth of his family’s home, surrounded by love, that made everything feel like it was falling into place.
“I’m really happy to be here, too,” you said softly, meeting his gaze. “It feels so... right.”
Daisuke grinned and reached for your hand, giving it a gentle squeeze before turning to his parents. “I think it’s time for us to get the party started! We still need to do the Secret Santa exchange, and I’m pretty sure everyone’s excited for that.”
His mom laughed. “Oh yes, we can’t forget about that! We all got something special this year, so I hope everyone’s ready for a little holiday fun.”
Dinner was a true feast. The table was piled high with everything you could imagine—roast turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, roasted vegetables, and an assortment of freshly baked rolls. In the center, a large cranberry sauce dish sat alongside platters of sweet potatoes and baked brussels sprouts. Daisuke’s mom had clearly outdone herself, and as you dug into your meal, you could tell that everyone was savoring each bite.
Between mouthfuls, you shared stories with Daisuke’s family, laughing and chatting about everything from your childhood traditions to more recent adventures. Daisuke’s dad was particularly fond of telling embarrassing stories about Daisuke when he was little, which had everyone in stitches. Daisuke, for his part, seemed unbothered by it all, even joining in with some of his own stories about his mischievous younger days.
But it wasn’t just the food or the laughter that made this night feel special—it was the way Daisuke kept glancing at you with that soft, affectionate look in his eyes, the way his hand would subtly brush against yours under the table, or how he’d pull you close during moments when no one was looking, as if to remind you that this was your time together.
--
After dinner, Daisuke insisted on taking you outside to see the backyard, which, as it turned out, had a stunning view of the town covered in snow. The Christmas lights from nearby houses reflected off the snow, creating a soft, magical glow that made the night feel like something out of a holiday movie.
“Come here,” Daisuke said, wrapping his arm around your shoulders and guiding you to the porch. “This is one of my favorite parts of Christmas—just looking out over the snow. My family used to come out here every Christmas Eve when I was younger and just… enjoy the peace.”
You stood with him, watching the snow fall gently, the cool air brushing against your skin. His presence beside you, his warmth, was enough to make everything feel even more magical.
“I never imagined I’d get to spend Christmas like this,” you murmured, leaning into him. “It’s been perfect.”
Daisuke smiled down at you, his fingers threading through yours as he pulled you a little closer. “I’ve been looking forward to this for so long, just to share it all with you. Christmas is better when you’re with the people you love, and that’s all I want for us.”
You leaned up to kiss him, the moment soft, gentle, and full of meaning. When you pulled away, Daisuke’s face was alight with happiness, his eyes sparkling.
“Merry Christmas, the most beautiful person I've ever seen,” he said softly.
You chuckled at his compliment as you stared deeply into his eyes in an, oh such affectionate way.
“Merry Christmas, Handsome,” you whispered back.
Later, as the evening drew on, everyone gathered around the tree for the Secret Santa exchange. You’d gotten Daisuke’s mom, and after some playful teasing, she opened the gift you’d picked out—a beautiful hand-knitted scarf, which she immediately wrapped around her neck with a delighted laugh. Then, Daisuke gave you your gift, a small box wrapped with care. When you opened it, you found a delicate silver bracelet with a charm that read together, a reminder of how far you’d come and how much you meant to each other.
You blinked back tears as you hugged him, your heart swelling with gratitude. “I love it, Daisuke. Thank you.”
“I’m glad you like it,” he said, his voice full of affection as he kissed your forehead. “This is just the beginning of our holiday together. I want to make this Christmas the best one yet.”
As the evening wound down, the two of you snuck off to a quiet corner of the living room, away from the laughter and chatter, to enjoy each other’s company in peace. With the soft glow of the Christmas tree lights surrounding you, Daisuke wrapped his arms around you, pulling you close.
“This is all I ever wanted,” he whispered, his voice full of love. “To be with you, here, now.”
And in that moment, surrounded by the warmth of his family, the love between you, and the gentle snowfall outside, you knew he was right. It didn’t matter where you were, as long as you were together.
“Merry Christmas, Daisuke,” you whispered, kissing him again.
“Merry Christmas,” he replied, smiling softly, his heart as full as yours.

Breakfast
The kitchen was already alive with the smell of oatmeal cooking on the stove when Jason walked in, carrying a sleepy-eyed Sofia on his hip. Her head lolled against his shoulder, but as soon as she caught sight of the high chair, she perked up.
“Up, Daddy!” she commanded, pointing at the chair like a queen giving orders to her loyal subject.
“Your Highness,” Jason said with a mock bow, settling her down carefully. Her feet swung back and forth, thumping lightly against the base of the chair. He tucked a stray braid behind her ear, and she gave him a lopsided, toothless grin.
“What’s on the menu today?” she asked, puffing out her chest like a food critic ready to give a harsh review.
“Oatmeal with berries and ‘the crunchy stuff,’” Jason announced, waving a wooden spoon for emphasis. “Only the finest for my princess.”
“Good,” she said seriously. “But no weird green stuff.”
“Who do you take me for?” he scoffed, pouring oats into a pot. “Some kind of spinach wizard?”
She giggled, and he felt the corners of his lips pulling up. As the oats bubbled on the stove, Jason tossed in a dash of cinnamon, stirred, and then turned to face her. She was trying to grab at an invisible something above her head, small fingers stretching.
“What’re you doing, Sofi?” he asked, eyebrows raised.
“Catchin’ fairies!” she said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “They always try to steal my crunchy stuff. It’s their favorite.”
Jason grinned as he stirred the oatmeal. “Well, those sneaky fairies better watch out because I’m putting extra crunchies today.”
Sofia gasped, eyes wide. “Extra? They’re gonna go bonkers!”
With a dramatic flourish, Jason scooped the oatmeal into a small bowl, added a handful of strawberries and blueberries, then sprinkled granola over the top. He brought it to her like a prized offering. “Here it is—the one and only anti-fairy oatmeal deluxe.”
“Thanks, daddy!” She grabbed the spoon and dug in, but not before giving the bowl a serious look. “No fairies allowed,” she whispered to it, then took a big bite. Her eyes lit up. “Mmm! It’s crunchy!”
“I told you,” Jason said, leaning against the counter with his own burnt toast. “The kitchen elves helped out.”
“Not elves again!” Sofia groaned between bites. “They’re always leavin’ their crumbs everywhere.”
Jason nodded gravely. “The worst. Absolute crumb bandits.”
Suddenly gggles echoed through the hallway, bouncing off the walls. Jimena burst into the kitchen, hair flying in all directions, her laughter coming in breathless gasps. Hot on her heels was Leo, a grin plastered across his face. Keeping his pace slower than her.
“You’re too fast!” Leo exclaimed, throwing his hands up as he came to a dramatic halt beside the table, pretending to be out of breath. He bent over, resting one arm on the tabletop for effect. Jimena skidded to a stop, still giggling, and tiptoed back toward him, eyes bright with mischief.
“Gotcha!” she declared, poking his shoulder. It was exactly what Leo was waiting for. He lunged, wrapping his arm around her waist and lifting her up, her legs kicking wildly as she squealed.
“No!!” Jimena shrieked between bursts of laughter, squirming in his grip. “Dad! Dad! Help me!”
Jason, who had been watching from the counter with a faint smile as he sipped his coffee, raised an eyebrow. “Oh no, a damsel in distress! What should I do?”
Jimena pointed at him, barely able to get words out through her giggles. “Save me, Dad!”
Jason set down his mug with deliberate slowness, like he was considering a life-or-death mission. “All right, hero mode it is.” He walked toward them, his frame casting a playful shadow over them. “Leo, prepare for battle.”
Leo held Jimena a bit higher, shifting her like a human shield. “You’ll have to go through me first!” he declared, mock-seriousness in his voice.
“Dad!” Jimena wheezed, caught between laughing and catching her breath. “Don’t let him win!”
“Never.” Jason moved, hands darting out to tickle Leo’s sides. Leo yelped, losing his grip just enough for Jimena to wiggle free and land on her feet, victorious.
“Ha! We got you!” she crowed, pointing at Leo while clutching her sides.
Leo, feigning defeat, sank dramatically onto a chair. “Betrayed by my own daughter and out-tickled by my husband. Is there no honor left in this world?”
Sofia, still munching on the last bit of her oatmeal, chimed in with all the wisdom of a five-year-old. “You shouldn’t mess with dad,” she said seriously, a bit of granola sticking to her cheek. “He’s a hero.”

wow new, fat breed i hope people are being normal about it.
i think one of the main criticisms i’ve seen with everlux is that their design is anatomically/biologically implausible in some way, largely related to how they’re really fat with really thin legs. the main thing being fat distribution. going to say right off the bat that YES i know these things are dragons, and thus vertebrates. so you wouldn’t expect them to have the proportions of something like a grub
counterpoint to this: i dont think staff cares
so many of the other breeds have absolutely wild anatomy that would not work in the real world without magic. so many of these breeds should not be able to fly at all. staff does not care about the anatomical plausibility of their dragons; they just want to make a design they’re satisfied with
besides, criticizing the design because it’s “implausible” or has wonky anatomy doesn’t really work when there are REAL-WORLD EXAMPLES of small animals with large bodies and legs as thin as twigs, just like the everlux have (lots of them being insects, which is convenient considering the everlux are Based On Insects)
out of the 3 insect breeds we’ve gotten, veilspuns are some sort of. weird little dragon fairy thing? aethers are moths. and everlux are grubs. go look at a grub and tell me how big its legs are compared to its body
(traced-over picture of a grub, for the insect phobia havers :3 phobia havers who are not really rude about bugs like that person in the announcement thread was: u guys are the real ones. thanks for being normal)
they are really fuckin’ chunky, with really thin legs. which is exactly what everlux are shaped like
and a thing i think not enough people are keeping in mind is the size of these dragons. the longest everlux i was able to find was .9 meters (just under 3 feet), which includes the tail. so the head and body are like. half of that. these things are SMALL
there is something called the square-cube law, which, when applied to biology, explains why something like a mouse does just fine with its thin, spindly legs when it’s at the size it’s already at. but if you make that mouse the size of an elephant, then those thin legs are no longer enough to support its weight; it’d need thicker legs to be able to stand up and walk, like an elephant. an elephant, in turn, would not need legs that thick if you made it the size of a mouse
everlux dragons are on the smaller side, which puts them closer to mice with their thin legs. thin legs like that are perfectly fine to support a smaller creature, especially considering how many they have. if anything, I’d say the main issue with them is leg length. those things Barely reach past the body, they’d probably need something longer if they didn’t want to be smacking their belly on every single rock or exposed root or whatever that's in their path
TL;DR the anatomy of everlux dragons is perfectly reasonable you’re just fatphobic
(i know not everyone who has critiqued or complained about the body size vs leg size is doing it because fatphobia/internalized fatphobia. this isn't directed at those people; it's directed at the people who are. though if anything its just me using this as an excuse to complain lmao) (also this is the result of Years of watching shit like this happen so its less the reaction to everlux in particular and more it being the latest in a long string of fatphobic discourse) (aren’t you tired of being nice. don’t you just want to go ape shit.)
anyway. the ideal everlux dragon would look like this:
thanks for coming to my ted talk

here's my list!!!
Is It Any Wonder? by Keane
this song. god. like I said before, to me this is Arthur after discovering Merlin's magic
I, I always thought that I knew I'd always have the right to Be living in the kingdom of the good and true
And so on, but now I think I was wrong And you were laughing along And now I look a fool for thinking you were on my side
·Kohaku to Ruri no Rondo - Mika Kagehira
This solo was early Valkyrie so, lots of devotion, a good deal of codependence and some toxic loyalty, basically a life lived with the sole purpose of being worthy of staying by someone's side
The fairy tale woven by these golden puppet strings is the only truthI discard everything other than that Both the amber dyed in admiration, and the lapis lazuli dyed in despair*
*here he's talking about his eyes, Mika has heterochromia. It works for Merlin beautifully
·Eternal Weaving by Valkyrie
Giving merthur valkyrie songs is so easy, the master-servant undertones, specially at the beginning, the constant use of sovereignty and nobility themes. too good. too easy
Singing glories of a king carved out of stone [...] your eyes that are painted with delight now please, show me
In this eternity that never ends the dreaming that the gods wanted now we can give it some shape
To me this song is golden age merthur.
·Somewhere Only We Know by Keane
this is my fav song, like, this to me is peak 2009-2011. this song gives me the same vibes of my fav modern AUs. Every song from Hopes and Fears gives me merthur modern AU vibes.
Also it makes me feel like it's Saturday afternoon and I'm getting ready to watch merlin on TV. idk. no more comments.
·Stippling by Double Face (rip)
this one..... this one is merwaine idc (works for mercelot too)
And yet, in your eyeseach color may just blend together into one
As long as you're next to me, while we're concealed by this spring storm Everyone wishes to leave a legacy They'll surely realise that the countless pieces of amber [...] can only draw in sepia color
this world may just be a stippling of solitude and instants but still, your eyes are seeking maybe, like a spring storm, the multitudes of colors will blend all into one
go listen to this one. please.
·Gaisenka by Valkyrie
Golden age merthur???? is this you???? again??? yeah.
Even the darkness known as hell is a mere pigment used to paint our path We will bring forth a light matched by none,
Behold, the beginning of the new Sovereign’s tale We offer up our very souls and raise up our noble will Now, resound the Song of our Triumphant Return
again, go listen to it and you'll understand.
·Tightrope from The Greatest Showman
c'mon.......
You pulled me in and together we're lost in a dream Always in motion So I risk it all just to be with you And I risk it all for this life we chose
To me that's literally merlin speaking about their relationship!!!!!!
·Ultimate Deception from Journey to Bethlehem
I've talked about this song before here, I see this as Arthur's internal conflict between the side of him that was raised to fear and punish magic and the side of him that loves Merlin and want to be on his side against everything
Don't make concessions for her transgressions She's made a mess, a fool of you I don't see deception in her confession I just see the truth
I will not stop talking about this song!!!!! it works too perfect!!!!!
Honorable mentions; or lyrics that are just too good
·Lie by JIMIN
Let's read the lyrics together and see who comes to mind:
it's endless, even if i try to run i've fallen into a lie
Caught in a lie Please find the me who was innocent I can't escape from inside this lie Please return my smile
[...]please save me who is being punished I am still the same me I always was the same me from before is here
Want me The me who is lost and astray
A lie that grows bigger and bigger Is threatening to swallow me up I can't escape from inside this lie Please return my smile
Your honor, I rest my case. (Merlin, this is about Merlin)
·This one is instrumental but Love Waltz from The secret of Moonacre?? I love this movie and this song makes me think about them idk
·Breathing by Ariana Grande
YES. breathing by Ariana Grande
Just keep breathin' and breathin' and breathin' and breathin' And oh, I gotta keep, keep on breathin'
Sometimes it's hard to find, find my way up into the clouds Tune it out, they can be so loud You remind me of a time when things weren't so complicated All I need is to see your face
I love this part, my biggest honor is offering this song to the current blorbo I'm enjoying. So here you go Merlin, enjoy.
What are your BBC Merlin songs?
I’m making the ultimate Merlin playlist and I need songs! I already have some of the classics*, but I would love some input, and also some deeper cuts! No song is too obscure or too cliché. The playlist tends to skew towards Merthur, but I want to expand it, so drop as many as you want, for any of the characters!
*the classics I have right now include King and Lionheart, A Thousand Years, Carry On My Wayward Son, Soldier Poet King, and The Night We Met.
#I wanted to add more#but I'm tired#enjoy these for now#I'm nothing if not a proud valkP#there's also another one I love from them#but#give me time and you'll see why#bbc merlin#playlist#merthur#merwaine#mercelot#no I'm not including anything from excalibur fight me#my post

Someone's been in the Revolutionary Girl Utena rabbit hole for a bit 👀
I don't even know what it's about, I just see it and get happy
Mind telling me a bit on what it's about? I might watch it myself if it sounds like my thing, bc you seem to have great taste in anime and games
I do have good taste thank you! *flips hair* lol just kidding,
Revolutionary Girl Utena is a surreal and wild queer feminist deconstruction of fairy tale romance and shoujo tropes and it has a lot to say about systems of power, cycles of abuse, the ways people cling to an ideal of innocent childhood which may have never existed anyway, the concept of purity, fear of change and loss, and whether becoming an adult inevitably means being corrupted in some way. Lots and lots of gender, lots of queer characters struggling with compulsory heterosexuality... but over all, it's a deeply meaningful story about the human condition and growing up in an imperfect world.
But also people turn into cows sometimes, there are elephants of surfboards at one point, and one character has a very emotive pet monkey in a tie. at least we think it's a monkey. It can be very silly, is what I'm saying.
The basic plot is that a girl named Utena lost her parents at a very age, but a prince came and comforted her, giving her a ring and telling her to never lose her strength and nobility. Rather than taking that as an engagement offer and aiming to be his princess though, Utena actually admires him so much that she decides to become a prince who saves girls in trouble too. She's determined to find the prince who changed her life though, and her search leads her to a very fancy and phallic looking Ohtori Academy.
Then, when this shitty popular guy makes her friend cry, Utena challenges a guy to a duel to make him pay (as you do). ONLY to find out that the student council of her school are all secretly dueling each other to be engaged to "the Rose Bride", a girl who is supposed to give whoever's engaged to her the power to revolutionize the world. As part of the student council, the shitty popular guy assumes Utena wants to "win" the Rose Bride too.
So next thing Utena knows, she's been dragged into a duel to "win" the "Rose Bride" (who is actually just Utena's classmate, Anthy). Utena thinks that fighting to possess a girl like she's an object is pretty screwed up, but on the other hand, she IS devoted to saving girls, and that shitty popular guy IS treating Anthy pretty badly....
Could be that she'll end up engaged to Anthy, whether she likes it or not....
It covers a lot of dark topics, from misogyny to abuse (sexual abuse included) to child predators to incest (never framed as healthy or okay though, in one case it initially comes off as a joke thing for a character, like the typical anime comedic brother/sister complex, but throughout this characters arc it becomes clear that no, it's really not, and it is not good for the character in question). It's not a graphic show by any means, it handles its subject matter tastefully imo, and the way it explores these things is very effective. It takes a while to build up to where it's going, but the journey is worth it.
If you're interested at all in queer anime or like...queer western cartoons even because odd are they'll have a Utena reference-- it's a must see because it was massively influential. It was made more than 20 years ago and really holds up still.
I also did a review series about it here a while back that people found handy!

https://www.tumblr.com/mirensiart/766516621742374913/i-have-to-ask-is-the-curse-in-the-pain-sharing?source=share
I'm usually the definition of a lurker but I'm leaving the safety of the void to ask about what you think the other curses would be for each of the Links. I thought up a few but I want to hear what you think they'd be!
Sky: No idea
Four: Forcing all the Links to split. So there's now 36 Links! I can only imagine the chaos :)
Time: De-aging/advanced-aging curse. So either everyone gets turned into kids or old men, or a mix of both. Or maybe a timeloop! Or maybe something to do with his masks? He has too many possibilities!
Legend: The Pain-Sharing AU
Hyrule: I want to say The Blood Curse gets shared, but none of them would even know unless the monsters started sacrificing them so... maybe everyone turns into fairies?
Twilight: Animal/Dark World Forms Curse.
Wind: Its a common headcannon that Wind can see spirits right? Maybe the spirit sense gets spread around? But that seems more like a benefit than a curse...
Warriors: Uhhhh...? No idea.
Wild: The only thing I can think of is giving the entire Chain amnesia and forcing them to recover their memories the same way Wild does.
Ooooh! OK so, when I made that post I was thinking specifically about legend and twilight cause like, they're already cursed/have a magic thing going on (legend has the soul bond and twi the dark curse) so the wizzrobe would have something to grab onto to base it's curse of
But the idea that the wizzrobe would base the curse on details of each link is pretty interesting ngl
Sky can be either a curse where everyone suffers from stamina issues or that everyone is aware of where everything is making it a sensory nightmare cause of his tracking homing abilities, lol
Four can be very fun, the wizzrobe curse can be either everyone splits into 4 making it the worst thing ever lmao or everyone is now minish sized, like imagine them trying to deal with the black blooded monsters as tiny lil things lol
Time can be the aging-deaging one but like by 7 years lol either some of them get older by 7 years or get younger by 7 years, for the younger ones getting 7 years younger would suck tbh like wind would be 6 lmao the masks ones are also good I feel, maybe wizzrobe casts the spell and the only one standing is Time surrounded by 8 masks of each of his bros 🙃
Hyrule's i'd love it if if where the fairy one, everyone is a fairy!!!! They can't wield a sword or use their items so it would suck ass lol
Wind would be funny if like, the wind waker abilities get spread around, like one of them moves their arms a lil and a cyclone happens lmao they move their arms up and down and now suddenly they're all being blown over by a strong gale, they do some hand motions and oh I can control one of you now, they move during battle making motions with their arms and now it's night time lmao
Warriors' can be constant era hopping cause of how there are so many portals between eras in his game, if the normal portals were annoying, then now every couple of minutes, a portal opens up, and they're in another time lol
Wild's giving them amnesia is so funny and idk why, I like this, everyone just standing there looking at each other like "who the fuck are you.....and who the fuck am I???"
And well, twilight's is the everyone is their dark world animal one and I love that one a lot too hehe
In a way, legend's pain sharing curse is one of the least awful ones lol

Not all stories are happy.
Not all soulmates are reciprocal.
Not all people could change their destiny.
Of course, in a perfect world, one person’s soulmate would also be another person’s soulmate. But reality went far beyond fairy tales and, as such, not all soulmates were mutual – and a person only knew their destiny when it was too late.
For years, people woke up with words tattooed on their wrists. They were simple, small words, just for the purpose of summarizing people’s love lives with their true love.
There were the luckier ones who woke up with little ‘fulfilled’ or ‘happily ever after’ on their wrists after their wedding. There were also those who had little ‘close call’ or ‘don’t try again’ written on their wrists on the coldest nights. And there were also those that read painfully ‘not destined’ or even ‘maybe in a next life’ that caused an inexplicable burning in the eyes of those who received such words. There were those who liked it, there were those who didn’t mind a mere tattoo and there were also those who did everything to force a soulmate into their lives.
The reality is that a person’s tattoo was already inscribed on them from the moment their soul found a body, always wanting to arrive at the right time to make itself noticed. And that was why no one could change their destiny.
But none of that matter. None of that mattered one bit to Kakashi. Because he only had one thing in mind: becoming strong and reliable. Kakashi didn’t care about dating or romance. Kakashi just wanted to do his duty as a shinobi.
But, of course, no matter how much he didn’t want to know, no matter how much he showed he didn’t want to know, his father was always attentive to him, always wanting to make him even minimally interested in the subject. After all, parents only wanted the best for their children.
And that was why Sakumo forced Kakashi to sit next to him on that cold, foggy morning.
“Kakashi, there is beauty in the midst of all this chaos.”
Sakumo’s voice was lost amid the fog, a phrase of pure harmony and delicacy trying to find its way in the thick maze of clouds and trees that invaded the territory.
There was a pause.
Kakashi didn’t deign to respond – he knew perfectly well where this conversation would end, he knew perfectly well what awaited him.
“The world is not driven by war alone.”
“Dad…”
Kakashi let a long and monotonous sigh escape his small lips, muffled by the dark mask, trapped inside the fabric without being able to show his total dissatisfaction.
“Not again. I have class in a bit.”
Kakashi stood up carefully and a little hesitantly. The truth is he didn’t want to leave his father alone. Kakashi didn’t want to abandon him once again at the mercy of fairy tales that did nothing but deceive a person.
However, Sakumo gave him no other choice. The cheap repetition of stories and princesses and kings became tiring – there was no longer any surprise in his father’s speech, there was no longer any hope for Kakashi.
As such, he was determined to abandon his father sooner than expected, his little feet taking short, uncertain steps to get away from his father, to get away from yet another unwanted conversation.
“Kakashi, why do you think there is war?”
Kakashi stopped his step with some abruptness.
That simple question from Sakumo echoed strongly inside Kakashi’s head, causing small dizziness in his mind where several possible answers appeared without any invitation, assaulting the little child’s sanity, making him question everything.
Why does war exist?
Of course, the main answer focused on people’s inability to be able to communicate with each other. There was also that need to come out and show their disgusting egos – that is the second answer to that question.
But there was something more.
There had to be something more.
People didn’t start wars just because they were bored.
…
Right?
Throughout his small and short existence, Kakashi has lived in a world of war and from an early age he was trained and taught to live and survive amidst so much devastation and anguish. Kakashi’s entire existence was shaped around the thick and aggressive sphere of what moved the world – war.
Would he have to know why?
In reality, Kakashi didn’t care if someone wanted to conquer the world, or if someone was kidnapped or killed unleashing days and months and years of pure destruction. Kakashi only had the mission to fight the war – that was all that mattered. Now the reason?
“I don’t care. Certainly the origin of all wars has an illogical basis. I have to stop the war. I don’t need to know why it started.”
Sakumo smiled and let his son go on his way, slowly losing sight of him as he began to be consumed by the fog.
Sakumo’s lips formed a perfect smile, a smile that left a trail of sadness with it because he knew perfectly well what was going to happen that day – Sakumo couldn’t really smile, not when he knew the end was near.
But there was something else hidden in his smile.
No matter how loud the voices screamed in his mind, the reality was that Sakumo feared for his son. Sakumo feared that Kakashi would never experience the beautiful pleasures of love as he himself had once experienced.
And there was nothing to do. There was nothing to do when Kakashi only focused on the human intellect. There was nothing to do when Kakashi purposely denied all the emotions that moved the world. There was simply nothing to do.
And Sakumo kept smiling.
His cold fingers gently stroked a small ‘there will be more in the next life’ that was fading due to the passage of time.
Several memories of a short and intense love began to haunt him in such a way that Sakumo didn’t even notice when the sadness on his lips turned into hope.
That hadn’t been the last life with his beloved – Sakumo knew that.
Then, muttering the answer to the question he himself asked his son, Sakumo stood up as well.
He knew perfectly well that there would be a second chance for his love. He knew perfectly well that Kakashi would realize the reality of the world they lived in. He knew perfectly well that everything would end well.
After all, there has never been a war without love.
Kakashi had lost everything.
There was nothing left for someone so young.
At fourteen, Kakashi’s entire life fell apart before his own eyes. Without family or friends, without anyone who could support him, he had lost everything – including his way in this world. Kakashi was wandering through the days, lost on the path of life, with no knowledge of maps or no guides that could help him.
Kakashi had lost everything, until he gained a new friendship, a new hope.
You appeared with the arrival of spring. Uncertain and always encouraging steps, an enormous desire for knowledge to be noticed in the intense shine of your sweet eyes, and wide smiles enchanting anyone.
You brought with you the breath of fresh air that prevailed at that time of year. Your feet encouraged so many beautiful flowers to bloom, new lives were created by you, new paths were drawn by your bare feet. The innocence of someone who had not yet experienced the evils of the world painted your smile with an extra tenderness that gave your cheekbones small splashes of the passion that the sun felt for you.
That spring day, when Kakashi saw you leaning over a hollow log, you carried something more than pure curiosity and amusement in your fingertips. You brought with you the hope of a new life for Kakashi, a hope that was felt by him when he, very clumsily, stopped you from rolling with the log to the bottom of the cliff.
Quickly, like someone blowing a leaf, something formed between you. A friendship? Probably. It was hard to be sure with Kakashi. But whatever you and he shared, you both knew it was something unique, something true.
A new stage in both of your lives was discovered in the other’s presence, a vast and longing wave of feelings beginning to form in you.
There was complicity between the both of you.
Since your first meeting next to that log, you and Kakashi shared an enviable complicity. Each one understood the other without the need to exchange words. A simple look, a simple sign, was enough for one to be understood by the other.
Days were spent together. Little secrets were exchanged amidst laughter and sighs, two distinct lives were soaked in pure melancholy, drenched in an extreme longing for a long-lost past.
And your adolescence has never looked so beautiful in the eyes of others.
Before you knew it, you and Kakashi have reached adulthood. And what used to be so simple and natural now seemed complicated with so many glances and hidden smiles and that hint of desire that clung to every word you exchanged.
Quickly, like someone forming a smile, beyond that very natural friendship, something more emerged between you. Something deeper began to emerge between the two of you.
“I don’t understand people’s admiration for the stars.”
You stretched a little as you sat next to Kakashi, the red blanket you always carried protecting you from the cold wind of that autumn night. “It’s something that has existed since the beginning of time. There are maps and photographs of them everywhere. Why the fascination?”
“It’s like war.”
The rest of your team rested silently on the ground, wrapped and cozy by a small fire starting by you, the tranquility of a successful mission being noted by their deep and steady breaths.
You and Kakashi were relaxing on one of the many branches of the most colorful and sturdy tree near your camp, your vision completely focused on the vast starry sky and the faint line of the horizon painted by the small mountains covered in snow.
There was silence on the ground and there was silence in the tree branches.
The breeze had been encouraged by several clouds venturing along unknown paths, giving you a little privacy on that very welcoming night. The moon was small, gaining strength for a more special date, slowly feeding on the desire of the most melancholy people who wrote to her. Every animal in the forest slept near you, the heat of the fire that crackled so loudly convincing the most diverse living beings to truly rest that night – except you and Kakashi.
“The war?”
You couldn’t contain the laughter that formed inside you, a sound so melodious and innocent that it woke up nature itself for a brief moment. The breeze had returned to you only to take with it the pure sound you released, keeping among the various clouds and stars the memory of your innocent question and laugh.
“How does the fascination of the stars compare to the war?”
“Humans can’t live without them.”
Kakashi was leaning against the trunk reading one of his typical books. None of his words were of the slightest interest. His uncovered eye cautiously read each line of the book. And he just waited for an answer. He waited for your curiosity. He waited for you.
“My dear Kakashi, I live well without both. Does that make me non-human?”
Kakashi let a long, amused sigh escape his lips and grab the echo of your new laugh. By closing the book and adopting a posture more favorable to a conversation, Kakashi let his movements continue over time.
The relaxing crackle of the fire calmly accompanied your team captain’s gestures as you fixed your eyes on Kakashi in the vain hope of encouraging him to speak or, at the very least, to hurry up.
However, there was no rush in Kakashi’s movements – all the time he took to sit next to you and stare at the stars seemed like an eternity to you.
But finally, Kakashi spoke.
“Of course you live well without both. But would you be the same person you are if they didn’t exist? Would you be complete if they didn’t exist?”
“Are you insinuating that we humans need to have stars and wars to be real?”
It seemed like an outrage. What Kakashi had just insinuated to you seemed to be wrapped in a thick layer of blasphemy and nonsense. The indignation at those words was reflected in the way you looked at the various leaves that framed Kakashi in an ethereal casing of change.
What was once a peaceful setting has now become a stage for nature. Strong winds and thick clouds slowly began to appear, hoping they could continue listening to Kakashi’s thoughts. Small nocturnal birds greeted you shyly with sweet and tender melodies that spread through the sleeping forest and made you smile.
“It’s what moves us.”
“I’m sorry,” you let out a fake laugh as you composed yourself on the tree branch.
You turned to Kakashi and focused your attention on his relaxed posture. Curiosity was caught in your eyes, and an eagerness to prolong that conversation could be seen in the way you so firmly and enthusiastically pronounced the words. “But I still don’t follow your reasoning.”
“A’right, let’s go step by step.”
“Please.”
Kakashi let out a small, almost inaudible laugh at your tender plea.
His eyes were now resting on your very curious posture: your arms adjusted the red blanket to also shelter Kakashi on that cold night; your eyes sparkled with the enthusiasm of yet another conversation with your best friend; your smile warmed Kakashi more than any blanket or fire could do.
“The stars, yea? We all know that since ancient times they have been the cause of all happiness and pain for people. People in ancient civilizations worshiped the stars as gods and saw in them countless stories and life lessons. And the very own people of those civilizations used the stars and their positions for agriculture and to make decisions. Are you following?”
“Yes, professor.”
You let out another laugh as you placed your legs over Kakashi’s and gently slid closer to him. The night was getting cold, the fire was on the ground and all you had was a red blanket and Kakashi.
And how he thanked all the gods for wearing a mask and for the moon being lazy that night. For, the pink tone he quickly adopted when he felt you so close to him only revealed how much he was waiting for that action of yours.
“So…”
A brief moment of silence followed after Kakashi’s statement.
Your captain’s reasoning was lost with your innocent act. It was a simple, affectionate gesture, something that had been repeated so many times. And, like every other time, Kakashi simply lost any coordination – the feeling of having you so close to him was fantastic, almost magical.
Thus, a brief moment of silence followed as Kakashi tried to find the thread of his thought, as Kakashi tried to grasp that thread without losing the very welcoming feeling of having you close to him.
“So,” he repeated again, his posture always relaxed and carefree, the mask being the perfect hiding place for his rosy face. “People adopted these little habits from their ancestors and that’s why there are so many people who still marvel at the stars. Of course, all romantics are also enchanted by them.”
“Why?”
Pause. Silence. Contemplation.
Why? In fact, that was always the question you asked. That was always the question that made sense to ask. Indeed, why?
Kakashi stared at the stars, trying to understand why. You stared at Kakashi, waiting for him to answer why.
But the answer never came. The answer never showed up and beautified your ears with sweet justifications and immaculate logic. For, realizing that there really wasn’t a defined reason for that question, Kakashi continued his reasoning.
Your captain’s voice was drawn out and always monotonous as if it were perpetually stuck in a timbre that conveyed a vast sense of comfort.
And you listened carefully to every word Kakashi said. You listened attentively to everything he had to say, always trying hard to follow his thoughts.
“Now the war.”
Kakashi paused briefly and took a deep breath.
A sigh that seemed to be filled with tiredness escaped his lips without realizing it – the memories of conversations he had with his father were felt at that exact moment. And they weighed. They weighed so much.
“War has always existed. Since the beginning of humanity there has been war. No wars, no humans. It is in our condition as human beings – it is our need. We crave destruction. We seek chaos. It’s in us. We need war to move us. Because, quite simply, we are the war. Without it, what would we do? Who would we be? That’s why there is fascination with it. That’s why there’s so much admiration. War is the stars of the most political. And the stars are the war of the most romantic.”
“So, by that logic, love is the war of the most philosophical.”
Kakashi looked at you with confusion expressed in his eye. The various and infinite stars reflected in Kakashi’s gaze showed that, in fact, he had not understood the use of your words.
Why did you decide to grab love out of nowhere?
Why did you decide to bring that taboo into the middle of a conversation that was so special to both of you?
Why?
You noticed the confusion in Kakashi’s lack of reaction. You realized that there must be doubt in your captain’s thoughts. Looking at Kakashi, it was easy to decipher the confusion he felt and you were intrigued, fascinated even.
“Do you really think that it is only war that moves the world?”
Kakashi opened his mouth but you didn’t know.
Kakashi closed his mouth again and you didn’t even notice.
In your captain’s mind, that last conversation he had with his father began to replay endlessly. Sakumo’s words came up whenever that dangerous topic was brought up – it seemed that Sakumo’s cheap philosophies tormented Kakashi until that day.
But it wasn’t always like that – no.
From the moment Kakashi met you, Sakumo’s haunting finally ceased.
There was no need to understand love because, quite simply, and even though he didn’t know it, Kakashi was experiencing that feeling so strong, so true. There was no need to recall a conversation that tried to explain something he was feeling, even though he couldn’t decipher that specific something.
Therefore, for several years, Sakumo’s words that were imbued with understanding and affection had been forgotten, completely erased from Kakashi’s memory.
No. Wrong. The words were still there, safe, inside Kakashi’s heart.
And it only took your question, your question so similar to Sakumo’s question, to free the words and torment Kakashi again.
“Kashi?”
You let out a laugh.
Kakashi certainly knew there was something more than war. He positively knew that not everything was destruction or contempt in this world. He had to know there was beauty and hope. He had to know that there was something good in this world. Kakashi had to know all this – right?
“Love?”
The word burned in Kakashi’s mouth, his melancholic eye locked in your eyes, the reflection of the universe trapped in your fingertips.
“Love.”
Your response came with a real, genuine smile. Your eyes showed a light and tenuous sadness while a tiny hope threatened to collapse at any moment.
You spoke like love itself. Delicate and light, your lips pronounced that word with precision and extreme ease.
You spoke like love itself. Your smile was genuine and embellished by the infinite stars, painted by the cool night breeze. Your eyes were sad, scared and fearful of the drastic change of an event, of a feeling.
You spoke like love itself. You spoke in a mix of emotions that were foreign to Kakashi, a thick ball of feelings and memories was trapped in your expression and made Kakashi feel confused.
You spoke like love itself, but Kakashi could only speak like war.
Kakashi spoke like war itself. Without any feeling, afraid of what his lips could utter, scared of the strength of the word itself.
Kakashi spoke like war itself. His every word and thought was completely calculated by him, no mistake to be uttered by Kakashi, the doubt that escaped his lips bringing a bit of wisdom.
Kakashi spoke like war itself. Kakashi spoke knowing perfectly well what awaited him, he spoke knowing perfectly well the answer to his question.
And between war and love there was a brief moment of silence. A moment of tranquility brought by the infinite stars.
Between war and love there was a moment of serenity that was heard only by your careful breathing, your gaze locked on each other, your smile slowly fading as time passed.
Love.
Was that the answer to his father’s question? No. It couldn’t be something so simple like that – but there was no such thing as simplicity in love.
“Love.”
Kakashi said his statement again, allowing a fragile and invisible line to escape his mask and take with it the bruning of that word.
There was something comforting in your gaze, something soothing in the way you held the blanket tight to you. There was something serene in the way you rested your legs on Kakashi’s, something welcoming in the way you and him stood together under that starry sky.
“Love” – Kakashi never found it easier to pronounce that word.
Days without you were boring.
Everyone knew that whenever you were on a mission without being on Kakashi’s team, he would roam the streets of the village like he used to do before he met you. Everyone knew that, for Kakashi, days without you simply didn’t make sense, not when you and he had already become fully accustomed to each other’s presence.
And that day wasn’t much different from the others.
Kakashi walked through the streets calmly. His feet shuffled without any energy, one of his hands sheltered in his pants pocket, the other holding a book close to his face.
Kakashi didn’t pay attention to what he was reading or where he was walking. Having already read and reread that book so many times, having already walked those streets countless times, Kakashi didn’t need to pay attention – because something else occupied his mind.
Your mission was somewhat complicated and you left with a good team, yes. But Kakashi couldn’t trust them, not when your integrity could be at risk – Kakashi could only worry about you.
A melancholy trail was left by Kakashi’s short and relaxed steps.
His eyes read and reread the same page over and over as his mind wandered to so many possible scenarios that could happen to you.
How he hated being away from you at a scary time like that.
Kakashi had been your team captain enough times for him to know you knew how to take care of yourself. But you were also distracted and that was what bothered Kakashi. A distraction from you, an ambush from them, a misfortune from the universe – everything seemed plausible when he was away from you.
He just wanted to be with you, to hear from you, to know that you were okay. He had to be with you.
But regardless of whether or not you managed to get home safe and sound, Kakashi spent his days monotonously without you by his side.
Even though Guy continued to make his occasional appearances, enticing Kakashi into meaningless duels; even though Naruto and Sakura could fill a fragment of the void you created; even though he knew you would be back next week, the reality is that Kakashi simply couldn’t live the days in your absence.
Not since that night under the starry sky. Not when the confession of a love came out disguised in a novice and somewhat shaky pronunciation.
What could Kakashi do? Just wandering around the village without your company. Just wishing every day was shorter than the last. Just peacefully wait for your arrival.
“Today I received my words!”
Naruto was always so loud.
Kakashi lazily looked up from his book and watched Naruto talk excitedly to Sakura and Shikamaru. The smiles they shared with each other were big, contagious, as if enticing Kakashi to also let out a small smile.
“Hinata is my soulmate!”
“I got mine during the war. It was Ino who noticed,” Sakura let out a small laugh as she recalled her chaotic reactions when she discovered that Sasuke was, in fact, the man the universe had destined for her. “What about you, Shikamaru?”
“Nothin’.”
A small sigh escaped Shikamaru’s lips and brought with it the hope of not having to worry about a soulmate anytime soon.
“What about you, Kakashi-sensei?”
“I don’t pay attention to that.”
A shrug was enough to direct the conversation back to Shikamaru.
But Kakashi kept thinking. Without realizing it, all the younger’s’ speeches were obstructed with the thought that, perhaps, Kakashi had already received his words.
It was true that Kakashi avoided looking at his wrist – since that night, the mere thought of love scared him.
Once, Kakashi simply didn’t care about something as trivial as love. The mere thought of such a feeling brought only haunting of long, uninteresting conversations with his father. But now, after that night, there was fear in the feeling. There was an extra fear that burned in Kakashi’s heart when he allowed himself the luxury of thinking about something as dangerous as love.
Ever since that night, the mere thought of love scared Kakashi because, quite simply, Kakashi couldn’t imagine that word without picturing you.
And Kakashi blamed you. Yes, you. You were the bringer of Kakashi’s destruction. Because, since that night, Kakashi really started to see the world differently. And he blamed you. He blamed that word. He blamed all the stars.
But had any mark already been engraved on his wrist?
Leaving conversations and laughter behind, Kakashi returned home.
A single goal was stuck in his mind. A single need ran through his heart. A single feeling moved Kakashi. Love.
The four walls of Kakashi’s room had never felt as cozy as they did at that moment.
It was the end of the day.
The last rays of sunlight were lost in Kakashi’s room. Shades of gold and hope burned fiercely in the three frames that rested delicately on his little furniture. Your face and Kakashi’s were adorned with light celestial tones from the last ray of sunlight, enhancing the joy and comfort that that photograph brought to Kakashi.
Night fell so quickly that it didn’t even give the sun a chance to warm Kakashi’s room.
It was cold.
The proud and bright moon contrasted with the weakness of that night, the stars taking the night off to give the various and diverse clouds their turn to shine.
There was darkness and there was cold.
In the midst of that discomfort, Kakashi looked for some warmth in his wrists.
His right wrist had nothing on it – the pale skin brought a bit of disappointment to him.
But there was still hope. There was still a second chance.
Cautiously taking off his left glove, Kakashi saw a single word shining in the moonlight.
‘Almost’.
Almost?
Kakashi’s mouth opened slightly on impulse as his eyes repeatedly read and reread that single word that was carved into his wrist.
How long had it been there? How long ago did fate decide to steal you from him? Almost? Why ‘almost’? Hadn’t his confession that night been enough for you? Wouldn’t the vulnerability with which he uttered and repeated that forbidden word have been enough for both of you? Almost. Almost? Why? Could he have done something? Could he have done nothing?
A wave of corruption completely washed away any and all hope Kakashi might have had. The curiosity that once drove Kakashi’s gestures was entirely replaced by regret and frustration.
Could he go back? Could he do something to change that word?
Surely if you arrived and he confessed everything he wanted and felt for you, maybe you would reciprocate his words.
No. Not ‘maybe’. Kakashi was sure there was reciprocity. That night left no doubt. The way you two spoke, the way you looked at each other, the way you pronounced the forbidden word.
Yes. There was definitely still a little hope, even if it was small. And Kakashi knew, as years of war had taught him, that hope would always be the last to die. Surely the same applied to love. Right? – you said it yourself: love is the war of the most philosophical.
Yes. Hope.
‘Almost’ wasn’t the word Kakashi had chosen to dictate his fate, no. It was ‘hope’.
Clinging to that small flame that had quickly lit in Kakashi’s heart, he watched the remaining days pass slowly and wistfully.
Kakashi just wanted you to come back as soon as possible. He just wanted to cheat fate once and for all and grab the happiness he had been so deprived of. Would it be too much to ask?
‘Almost’. Pathetic.
‘Almost’. Of course it wasn’t almost – Kakashi would never allow it to be ‘almost’.
And when you arrived, Kakashi carried the war with him – he was determined to change his destiny, even though he was scared. There was determination in his steps, Kakashi’s eyes so empty conveying a bit of uncertainty, of fear, of regret in actions he should have done long ago.
Waiting for you for so long only gave Kakashi permission to think, to ponder all the opportunities that were missed by him in fear of a confession made of decent words – he could make a list of all the waste that was lost.
The ‘almost’ was right.
Years passed – Kakashi should have known better. He had so many books about it, he should have known better. It wasn’t enough to just say a complicated word. It was not enough to just feel a complex feeling. Kakashi had to show – and Kakashi never showed.
But now Kakashi was determined to change that. Kakashi was determined to change his destiny.
Just like war, Kakashi came to you without any warning.
Just like war, Kakashi caught you unnoticed in a spontaneous embrace of longing and nostalgia. It was rare for Kakashi to express his love, but you couldn’t deny that it was something that always made you smile.
You hugged Kakashi back, your arms fitting perfectly around his body, the way his strong arms squeezed you in a comforting embrace making you more relaxed. Although you had already arrived at the village two days ago, it was at that moment that you truly felt at home.
“How’s the mission?”
That wasn’t the question Kakashi wanted to ask – it wasn’t what he had rehearsed.
But you started a long, drawn-out monologue about all the ups and downs of that mission that lasted almost two weeks. A rollercoaster of emotions was reported by you as Kakashi listened attentively to every word out of your mouth.
And, while he listened to you, he looked intently at your arms.
Kakashi’s empty eyes searched for tattoos made by the stars. The curiosity to know your fate was what moved Kakashi’s eyes and forced him to look at your body.
Until finally he saw it.
‘It was close’.
It was close?
What absurd words had fate given you? It didn’t make sense.
Was it close that you didn’t end up with Kakashi? Was it close that you fell into someone else’s love trap? What did those words mean? What did they mean in a vast sea of possibilities?
“And I got my tattoo on the way here.”
You extended your arm and gave Kakashi permission to read your mark better.
‘It was close’.
“I was confused by what it meant. But it made sense when I found…”
“Him?”
Him.
Kakashi knew who you were talking about.
You didn’t need to confess names or draw portraits with your words. Kakashi always knew who you were talking about, because he was the one you loved before you met Kakashi, and he was the one you loved during the early days of your friendship with Kakashi.
“Yea.”
The smile you let out reminded Kakashi of love: shy and so happy, a hint of accomplishment displayed in the beautiful curves of your lips, a sense of comfort trapped in your confession.
Love.
Damn you.
“He walk with me to the village and is staying here. Today we’re going to our first date.”
And that’s when Kakashi realized – no one could change their destiny.
With a fake smile and forced curiosity, Kakashi allowed you to nail long, painful barbs into his heart, erasing any hope he still had left, completely staining the forbidden word for Kakashi.
With a fake smile and tears trapped in his eyes, Kakashi allowed your happiness to flood his darkness, little stars of your joy faintly painting Kakashi’s pain.
Because, yes. Despite everything, Kakashi was happy.
Even though he would be happier with you, Kakashi was happy for you.
You overflowed with love.
Extreme happiness wrapped in a film of euphoria delicately filled your room. Your eyes shone with the emotion of a love about to be lived. Your wide smile managed to be contagious, even though Kakashi didn’t want to smile.
You were the embodiment of love.
You were hope and comfort from the first day he met you and he hated you for it.
Kakashi hated you because he knew he would never be able to find someone who had as much of an impact as you did. He would never be able to find someone who made the word ‘love’ mean as much as you did.
It was the way you spoke so happily about each other. It was the way you still cared about Kakashi like you still liked him. It was your own way of being.
You were kindness and simplicity hidden behind a strong sphere of complexity.
You were, undeniably, love.
And the conversation that night never made as much sense as it did at that moment.
In Kakashi’s realization, in the midst of all the suffering caused by you, you continued to move Kakashi. The way you still made Kakashi eager to see you. The way your company was still, and always would be, crucial to Kakashi. The way he still loved you after you caused him so much anguish.
You have always been the personification of the word love. And, just like the feeling itself, it was you who moved Kakashi’s world.

OMG OMG OMG Imagine a world where you are an olympic champion figure skater and your boyfriend is miya freaking atsumu 🤧🤧
YES YES YES !! tsumu has grown the habit of either skipping or missing half of practice just to go visit you and see your practices. he’ll miss practice to watch your competitions and be the loudest cheerleader ever (and get a good smack on the head by coach the next day for missing out).
he’s the type to carry everything for you. your skates, your bag, anything. he’d always always give you his jacket after your practice, claiming that he’s been keeping it warm for you before placing kisses on your frozen knuckles. i feel like tsumu likes to call you a ‘pretty fairy on ice’ with the way you glide and twirl around. omg and this guy’s done for when he sees you in your uniform all dazzled up and pretty🙂↕️
good luck kisses are always always exchanged during warm-ups and before games/competitions— you guys don’t know what you’d do without them ! you’d give him a good kiss before he’s on the court and tsumu would give you one before your skates touch the ice, sneaking past your coach just to do so.

It had been several days since I came to the castle. … But my situation remained unchanged.
No matter how begged him to, the fairy refused to break the curse or even extend the deadline.
(I’m forbidden from leaving the castle too, so I don't have any other options…)
What hurt me even more was Ellis.
Ever since learning about his connection with Jude, I’ve started actively avoiding him.
(Just this morning…)
= Flashback Start =
Ellis: Good morning, Kate. I brought breakfast.
Ellis: I’ve got your favourite freshly baked bread with raspberry jam.
Kate: …
Ellis: … I don’t mind if you don’t talk to me, but please eat. I’m worried about you.
Ellis: You won’t have energy without water, nutrients, and sunlight…
= Flashback End =
Feelings of guilt welled up in me again when I recalled the sadness in his face as he left.
(I really do want to go back to being friends like we were, but I just can’t find the right chance…)
I wandered into the castle garden to clear my mind.
Looking at the briar made me think of him—
Kate: … Ellis…
I unintentionally called out his name.
In an instant, the briar in the garden rustled and crept towards me— suddenly, small white flowers bloomed from them.
(... It’s almost as though they’re trying to cheer me up.)
(I remember how I used to see briar as my friend.)
During my childhood, being a princess meant that I didn't have many people I could talk freely with and was hence often feeling lonely…
I’d always talk to the briar growing in the castle’s back garden.
(I’d tell it all sorts of silly things… like how much I loved raspberry jam or how the air smells after it rains.)
(... Come to think of it, I gave the briar a name too.)
There was once where a gardener tried to clear out the briar for being a nuisance, so I gave it a name to protect it.
“This is my friend! Don’t cut it away! It even has a name, it’s—”
(I… what did I name that briar again?)
I tried my best to recall… but in the end, I couldn't remember it at all.
Still, the flowers blooming from the briar were a beautiful sight and gave me the courage to apologise to Ellis for my recent attitude towards him.
Kate: I wonder where Ellis is right now…
Just as I muttered those words under my breath, the briar started stretching in one direction.
Kate: Are you… pointing me towards Ellis?
When I asked, half-convinced, more white flowers bloomed rapidly as though telling me that I was right.
Kate: Thanks, I’ll follow you.
Having grown accustomed to the peculiarities of the fairytale world, I followed after the briar.
…
(Oh, there’s Ellis… and is that Jude with him?)
Ellis: — Why don't you break Kate’s curse, Jude?
Ellis: She really wishes for you to.
Jude: Ha? Don’t ask me such stupid questions. I’m tryin’ to do somethin’ ‘bout her illness, ain’t I?
(Do something about my “illness”...?)
(The thing I have is a “curse”, isn’t it? … What illness is he talking about?)
Kate: What do you mean by that, Jude?
Jude: W-when did ya… were ya eavesdroppin’?
Ellis: Jude. Kate looks like she really wants to know, so just tell her about it.
Kate: Please do…!
Jude: …
Jude sighed… and began telling a truth I never knew.
Apparently, I had an incurable disease and my time was limited.
Jude learned of this by chance and in an attempt to help me, he cursed me so that I would fall into a deep slumber for 100 years right before my death.
Jude: After ya fall asleep, I’ll spend that 100 years searchin’ for a cure and pay back my debt.
Kate: So you were trying to help me… thank you for that.
Kate: But why didn't you clear up the misunderstanding earlier?
Judes … Says the daughter of the stupid King who won’t listen to a damn thing anyone tells him.
Kate: I-I’m sorry my father was rude…
Kate: … But I’m glad I found out about it now.
Kate: It means I won't have a misunderstanding towards you anymore… and I don’t have to think I’ve been “betrayed” by Ellis.
Ellis: … So does that mean we can go back to being friends?
Kate: If you’re alright with it, of course. … I’m sorry for treating you so coldly.
Ellis: I didn’t mind, so you don’t have to worry about that either.
Seeing Ellis’ smile at me like flowers blooming had my heart racing again.
— It felt like it was urging me to realise something, a certain feeling.
…
Later that night, after Ellis and I cleared up the misunderstanding between us and reconciled.
Ellis suddenly asked me a question after dinner.
Ellis: You don’t need Jude to break your curse anymore?
Kate: Of course not! The purpose of Jude’s curse is to keep me alive, after all.
Ellis: …
Kate: … Ellis?
Although I thought my answer was to be expected, Ellis looked surprised.
I began to worry if I had said something strange.
Ellis: If you’re fine with the curse not being broken…
Ellis: … Does that mean you still want to live?
Kate: …? Yeah. There are things I still have to do…
Although I had put it on hold for a while, I needed to find what was missing from this story and correct the twists.
(Oh… but if I fix the twist and return to my original world…)
(I won’t be able to be together with Ellis anymore.)
When I first came to this fairytale world, all I could think about was that I had to find a way back…
But along the way, I started feeling like I didn't want to leave. The main reason was Ellis.
(I want to spend more time with Ellis.)
(I want to eat delicious food with him, enjoy beautiful sights together… I’d even love to go on another journey with him.)
(I want to know more about Ellis. I want to see his smile from even closer to him…)
Those desires flowed endlessly through me, filling my heart with a strong yearning.
(Could this feeling be… love?)
That said, my life was still in danger and it wasn't the right time to be confessing to him.
(I’ve decided… once my illness is cured, I’ll tell Ellis about my feelings.)
However, while I was making that decision, I didn't notice that Ellis’ twilight coloured eyes had darkened and clouded over.
…
And so, the search for a cure to my illness began.
Although, in reality, it was Jude who did most of the actual searching and mixing potential medicine while Ellis took down the pursuers sent by my father and the assassins targeting Jude.
Meanwhile, I took care of our meals, clothes, and living space, supporting them in their everyday lives.
— But there was no progress, and time continued slipping away.
…
Jude: … We’re short on medicinal ingredients, so I’m headin’ out. Be back in half a day.
Although he’d never admit it, Jude looked worn out as he spoke before leaving the castle.
(Is it really alright to leave everything to Jude? Maybe there’s more I could be doing to help…)
Ellis: … Something on your mind, Kate?
Kate: Yeah. I’m just… frustrated that all I can do is watch from the sidelines…
Ellis: I see… is there anything I can do to help?
Ellis: I like you, so I want to give you strength.
Kate: eh.
(W-what kind of “like” does he mean…?)
I was a blushing mess but when I glanced at Ellis’ facial expression, he looked the same as always… he didn't look like he was confessing his love.
Kate: Just in case… Ellis, do you like Jude?
Ellis: Jude? Yeah, I do. I owe him, after all.
Kate: I-I see…
(... Thank goodness I didn't jump to conclusions. Ellis’ definition of “I like you” is platonic!)
It was a little disappointing, but I quickly regained my composure and returned to the topic.
Kate: Umm, anyway… I think I should do some research on my illness too.
Kate: Will you help me?
…
And so, we made our way to the study that Jude said was off-limits to us.
Kate: Found it!
Thanks to Jude’s meticulous personality, it didn't take long for us to find what we were looking for.
The research report about my illness was stored neatly in one of the desk drawers.
Kate: Um, let's see… “Briar Disease”?
According to the report, I contracted the disease by pricking myself on the thorns of a special kind of enchanted briar.
(Briar? Could it be…)
I was suddenly reminded of the briar I would talk to as a child.
(I remember being pricked by one of them and coming down with a high fever.)
(... Maybe that’s when I contracted this illness.)
“When the time comes, the thorn embedded in the body will rapidly grow, destroying the patient from their insides and ultimately resulting in death.”
“The only solution is to completely eliminate the existence of the briar the thorn came from, whether it is by burning or other means.”
As I read further, I found out that Jude had already identified the briar in question and it grew in the royal castle’s back garden.
However—.
“The briar is stubborn and unyielding, resisting all attempts to eliminate it.”
“It's a monstrous plant that regenerates even when burned or cut down. All efforts were in vain.”
Kate: So Jude concluded that it’s impossible to destroy the briar and started researching other ways to cure the illness.
Ellis: Yeah, he really tried every method he could come up with. He drowned it, froze it, burned it… you name it.
Ellis: The most painful one was when he chopped it up.
(Ellis was involved in trying to kill the briar too…)
(Since the briar is thorny, holding it while chopping it up must've hurt really badly.)
Ellis: … Hey, Kate.
Ellis: Do you truly want to cure your illness and continue living?
(I want to live, and… I want to keep talking to Ellis more and more.)
Kate: Yeah… of course.
Ellis: I see… so that’s your current wish.
Ellis: It’s… different from back then.
For some reason, Ellis wore a rather lonely smile.
Kate: Ellis…?
Ellis: … I understand your feelings. Well then, let’s go.
Ellis: If we go now, we can kill the briar.

I just want to see Cosmo, wanda, Timmy, Prei
And the god kids, if you want to
In a cuddle pile.
Cuddle pile!!! Once, Peri brought home a stray Furby. It brought the entire house into chaos as the Furby went feral on them. It took sacrificing Cosmo to it for the Furby to calm down.
It spat him out eventually, but the house was a wreck afterwords. Wanda refused to let Timmy or Peri keep it as a pet, thinking (rightly) that they're not ready for one. Cupid took the Furby off their hands afterwords.

Yes! This is good to see another side of fairy World and how maybe it's failing more kids than helping them especially in the modern age with so many young fairies now becoming Godparents like Peri.
Or it's always failed Godkids but Cosmo and Wanda were the outliers because 1. They wanted a family of their own so badly but the fairy baby ban prevented that so instead they "adopted" all their godkids as their own, and 2. They have caused a lot of havoc for Jorgen(Cosmo being the main reason he and Wanda lost Crocker, then years later becoming so attached to Timmy he was basically their son more than any Godkid they'd ever had so pulling the family away was both a headache and heartache for Jorgen) by not always following Da Rules so when they retired we actually see how bad Da Rules are.
Also can I just say, for all the love and care Juandissimo spouted having for Remy, you gotta admit he failed Remy by not being a father figure to him, instead just making all of Remy's wishes come true that in turn almost lead to the death of not only two fairies but could have also accounted for the death of three children(which again feeds into this fairy mindset of "make as many wishes as possible and not really question them unless they are fully against Da Rules). Maybe Remy finally realized this by the time we see him for the last time with his parents in Country Clubbed, he realized that he'd never get parental love even from his godfather so he resigned himself to this life, Juandissimo was permanently taken away, and we can only hope Remy turned out a better adult than his parents and only because he realized it on his own and just found a better outlet for his anger, sadness, and lack of familial connection. I know people see Juandissimo and Remy as a good match, but never once did these two give me "they are father and son" vibes like Cosmo and Timmy did, and isn't that what Remy needed over being bent on revenge to a kid who didn't even care about Remy's life style and would have actually been the perfect friend to him?
Now yes Timmy finding so many loopholes did cater to many of the news ways certain wishes have to be granted(time based wishes going through Father Time, nature based through Mother Nature, and of course love ones through Cupid) BUT I will stand my ground that Timmy was kinda the final nail in the coffin for Fairies to actually make these rules(you cannot tell me that a little girl causing WW1 did NOT have the fairies reconsidering plenty of wishes if she was able to take out a human-probably the reason you can't wish physical harm on anyone like how Timmy was trying to do to Chip Skylark before he really got to know his big brother figure(yes I will die on the hill that over the years they saw each other as brothers and Chip even helped Timmy get his ear pierced).
So, having Peri get personal lessons on how being a fairy works from Jorgen, plus with all the changes to Da Rules(which in Battle of the Dimmasonian we even see Peri question Da Rules when it came to Viozalea) not to mention he was a really young kid when he left Timmy and his parents handled Timmy's emotional side while Peri just helped grant Timmy's wishes or just was being his baby brother.
Peri also fearing he'd make his Uncle Jorgen sad by failing him(over making his parents sad since to him they never saw any flaw, which if we get a Season 2 I REALLY want to know what happened between Cosmo, Wanda, and Peri leaving Timmy to Cosmo and Wanda going on their time traveling 10,000 year vacation, to Peri getting his Godparenting license up to where A New Wish starts. Like Peri decided instead of becoming a Fairy Dentist to follow in his parents "footsteps" and become a Godparent but not seek them out for any help in his studies or ask them questions about how they dealt with different kids.) is very viable for him since Jorgen and Tooth probably helped with Peri's schooling while Cosmo and Wanda were on their vacation.
Also with Cookie's ideal ways of wishing, I wonder how many of her previous Godkids went back to being miserable once she left because she just grants what SHE thinks they want over what they need and she'd only be with kids for barely a year because she gives them all this stuff, but what if she was assigned to a kid who was similar to Timmy or Dev, neglectful parents(or worse actually abusive) and would not take any of her "precious time" to sit and talk to her godkid and comfort them like how a real parent would(probably not realizing how bad the parents were unless she would see actual bruises on them but just magic them away). Even if these kids were able to wish themselves out of those homes(which could the modern day Rules even do that?) they would still be heavily effected by whatever happened only now that they were deemed "safe" by Cookie's and Da Rules' standards she'd leave them and just go on to the next kid.
You think Peri met her and even once questioned her methods and how different they were to his parents? Then again he'd probably just think this was how things were done today for Godkids and not even question it, until-you know, he finally saw his parents again and slowly started realizing what Dev needed, but it was too little too late.
Okay sorry I rambled here but I LOVE now picking out how Peri, and Jorgen, were setting Dev up to keep being miserable and if we get a season 2, even if Dev kept his memories but doesn't keep Peri, will he resign himself to knowing he'll never get his dad's love and affection or will he get an actual competent Godparent. I've seen people suggest Juandissimo buuut unless he did a LOT of soul searching I'm not thrilled if they go that route. But, I would think the writers could revisit the concept of two different kids sharing the same Godparent, ie Hazel and Dev share Cosmo and Wanda. With actual care put into the writing this could work, especially since while both need the emotional support Cosmo and Wanda give, Hazel needs it more to calm herself and have cool adventures while Dev needs it to find out who he is when not living in his dad's shadow and generational trauma(looking at YOU Doug Dimmadome owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome!).
And done. Thank you.
It’s so weird to me that some people put at least part of the blame for Peri’s behavior and mistakes on Jorgen. Yes, he may be responsible for his attitude towards work and rules, but certainly not for his attitude towards Dev himself.
Some compare Dev to Timmy and wonder why Peri didn't cheer him up then on his birthday(after all, he could have seen his brother Timmy in him). And they forget that 13-14 WHOLE years have passed (and 20 years in total). His personality could have changed beyond recognition since he was a child. Yes, yes, children tend to grow up and change depending on their upbringing and environment (and sometimes not always for the better). That's why I'm so interested to know what kind of childhood Irep and Peri had.
Peri was raised by loving and caring parents who often see only the good in him. And Irep was also raised by parents who love and care but are more distant, giving him more personal space. And if Cosmo and Wanda mostly see only the good in Peri, A.Wanda and A.Cosmo mostly see only the bad in Irep. But not in the way that many might think. After all, they are anti-fairies. So.. of course they saw him as their distributor of chaos (lovingly). While at school and everyone else saw only the bad in Irep, but already in a negative way for him. Irep always lived with the thought deep in his head that he was only the worst half of his fairy counterpart and all the time tried to prove the opposite. Therefore, he constantly tried to present himself in the best light in his typical manner…
