warnings: kissing, sexual af pairing: percy jackson x daughter of aphrodite a/n: this makes me twirl my hair and kick my feet and roll around in bed I hope you feel the same 😭
Tumblr media
one thing aphrodite and poseidon had in common was their roots of the sea. aphrodite was born from the whites of the sea foam by the severed genitals of uranus (you’d like to forget this when you swim though) and poseidon is the literal sea god. that’s why in your mind the only demigod son of poseidon was perfect for you, the favorite daughter of aphrodite
you slide the last shell through the piece of string, completing a full bracelet of pink and blue shells, aesthetically pleasing to the eye. you smile softly and take percy’s arm into your hand, sliding the bracelet around his wrist. he mirrors your expression and places hands back on your waist from your position between his legs
“do you like it?” you ask
“of course I do, angel. you made it”
a flamingo pink hue makes its way to your cheeks. percy takes victory of making you blush and slots his lips with yours. your wide smile causes him to pull away
“stop smiling, you weirdo”
you pinch percy’s arm. “I can’t help it!”
“c’mere smiley” percy places one hand on the back of your head and pulls you in again. this kiss stops every coherent thought your brain could possess
you could’ve died happy. your smile disappeared as the more kisses he place to your lips. one, two, three, four, so on. percy takes the next step and lowers his hands, now having a grasp on your hips and pulls you to lean back along with him. now your position to straddle him. your whole body curves into percy’s, almost like two puzzle pieces perfectly fit together. just when the kisses started getting heated percy pulls back, staring at you
“what?”
percy smirks. oh no. “you’re pretty”
you roll your eyes and groan. “remind me why I like you?”
“because I’m a good kisser”
you laugh and connect your lips back together. once, twice, three times but this time it’s broken apart because percy can’t stop smiling. you pout in return
“percy” you whine
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry!”
percy laughs at your needy demeanor and pulls you back in, thus causing you to let out a moan of complete happiness into percy’s mouth. his hands once on your hips slide under your shirt and dig into your bare skin. you were needy, oh you so wanted percy. and he was happy to fulfill your needs as much as you wanted

I just saw a post about how Hera, Demeter, and Hestia should be the Big 3 instead of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. And while I understand the sentiment (✨Feminism✨🖕🏻Fuck the Patriarchy 🖕🏻✌🏻Girl Power✌🏻 etc) I personally think Hera, Demeter, and Hestia are not only quite content with their positions, they very likely helped orchestrated it to be that way.
One of the biggest mistakes worshipers, witches, and mythology fans make is thinking the 3 sisters are not powerful enough to take the thrones if they wanted them.
Demeter alone forced 2 out of the 3 Kings (1 of them being THE King) to bend to her will. One of those thrones could have easily been hers if she wanted it.
Hestia paved the way for Athena and Artemis, by CHOOSING her own path. She didn’t ask Zeus, she told him by swearing an oath that she would remain a virgin. And of course, Hestia gets offerings first and last. Pretty sure the one thing all the Gods can agree on is that Hestia is the best and that by itself is power.
As for Hera, she knows her position is actually far better than Zeus’ bc she has more freedom. I always compare them to the King and Queen in chess. The King is important enough to be the entire purpose of the game however he’s extremely limited. The Queen, on the other hand, is limitless which makes her the most dangerous piece on the board. You can see this in action in the Iliad. Hera is able to release her anger and fury for not being chosen by Paris and aids in the destruction of an entire city. Zeus, with all his power as King, can’t even prevent his beloved son’s death because his position of King does not allow it. And it was Hera who reminded Zeus that as their leader, he couldn’t save his son. So she knows the limits that come with that role. Why would she choose a position that only lets her move one space at a time when she can move whenever and however she wants? And she still has a crown on her head.
I get because of how patriarchal Ancient Greece was it’s easy to look at the hierarchy of the Gods as a reflection of that. But personally, I think the structure actually makes sense when you take into account the personalities of the Gods and what each position requires.
And as I said before, if Hera, Demeter, and Hestia weren’t happy with the current structure, it wouldn’t be the current structure. 😂
Also, we haven’t even talked about the wildcard that is, Aphrodite! As if that hot sexy bitch couldn’t take the whole thing down with just one boob.
Like come on, I thought we all already knew that our Goddesses are the ones who truly run the entire show?

i love you, i’m sorry — [p.jackson]
Tumblr media
pairing: percy jackson x reader
warnings: sexual innuendos, angst, not a happy ending
wordcount: 1.4K
There was something about the way his dark, messy hair hangs in my eyes as he hovers over me. The way his slender, strong fingers brush it back, only for the front pieces to dangle in his eyes again, the sweat and heat making them slightly curly. Like a little heart.
The way his fingers press into me, in all the right places. My sides, my hips, my cheeks. The way his fingers fit in between mine as he pins my arms against the mattress above me, lacing them through mine in a mixture of comforting reassurance and teasing dominance.
Something about the way his sea green eyes gaze at me, all over, spreading a warmth over me so hot that no blanket could ever compare. The way they sparkle when he stares at me; when he pulls off my shirt and discards it to the floor.
His mouth is two inches of hot, breathy magic. Pressing into my lips, breathing into my mouth. Leaving harsh marks of possession scattered over my skin, maroon reminders of my burning nights at his side.
His touch sets me alight inside, fire burning–curling from my core and swallowing me whole.
Percy Jackson.
The son of Poseidon.
A boy with all the wild passion and fury of the oceans.
He was intoxicating, in every single way.
Which is probably why it hurt so much when I realised that all he wanted was nothing. He wanted a fun and easy fling. Sex, kisses, and distractions. But he didn’t want me.
I didn’t know this at first, of course. It took me a while to get there.
“Hey,” I say easily, one week before the disaster.
“Hey, back,” Percy replies, grinning at me over his shoulder as his fork picks at the blue pancakes piled on his plate.
“Whatcha doing?”
He gives me a look. “Eating breakfast.”
I can’t help but laugh, which is silly and dumb because absolutely nothing is funny, I just love being with him.
“Hey,” I say, sitting down beside him, six days before the disaster.
“Hey, back.” Percy smiles. His legs dangle over the edge of the pier. He’s dressed in only board shorts and sneakers, and I have to fight to keep my eyes away from his bare, tanned torso.
It doesn’t work.
“You’re allowed to look, you know,” Percy says, a smirk on his mouth.
So I do, and I feel warm inside in more ways than one.
“Hey,” I breathe out, five days before the disaster.
“Hey, back,” Percy pants out, his hair falling in his eyes. I have to resist reaching up and brushing it out of the way. I can tell he’s waiting for me to say something, so I take a deep breath and do.
“I know we don’t usually talk during… this.” I chew my lip. “But I just thought I’d mention that you look amazing tonight.”
He smirks, his sea green eyes flirting lazily to meet mine. “You always look amazing.”
And, gods, those words felt better inside of me than, well, whatever else was inside of me right now.
“Hey.” Four days before the disaster.
“Hey, back.” Percy isn’t looking at me. He’s leaning against a pine tree, gazing out at the woods around us.
I kick a loose stone off the trail and watch it bounce twice into the trees. “So…”
Now he looks at me, and as usual, his gaze makes me falter, all rational thoughts dissolving in an instant. “So?”
“Would you want to go on a walk with me?” I ask hesitantly. It was kind of a synonym for asking for us to be official.
Percy just grins. “Sure.”
“Hey,” I sigh, walking beside him with my arms full of mail. Three days before the disaster.
“Hey, back.” Percy’s tongue is tucked into the corner of his mouth as he pulls another letter from my arms, his eyebrows tight as he tries to read it.
“Mail sorting is the worst of all the chores,” I decide.
“Agreed,” he murmurs, eyes still focused on the letter. So instead I focus on his fingers as they curl around the paper, long and slender and familiar.
“Hey.” I’m panting, midway through sword training with Percy. Two days before the disaster.
“Hey, back.” Percy has much more spare breath than me. This is always how we are during the hot nights and stolen afternoons in his cabin, too; I am breathless and he is completely in control.
His sword drops as he gazes at me, a question in his eyes. Usually I don’t talk during our one-on-one training sessions.
“Thanks for always helping me with this stuff,” I manage, trying to focus on the now and not the later. Later, meaning the spare afternoon we both had today. Later, meaning the warm need I was desperately holding at bay until Percy could work his magic and fulfil it.
“Hey,” I approach him slowly. One day before the disaster.
“Hey, back.” Percy glances over at me, and he smiles, sending a shoot of joyful hopefulness through me.
“What are you up to today?” I ask, crossing my fingers behind my back.
His eyes meet mine, and he smiles again. “Hanging with you, I think.”
I suck in my breath, so excited it’s definitely showing in my expression. Are we finally becoming something real? Like I’ve always wanted? “Okay.” I nod. “Okay.”
“Hey.” The day of the disaster.
“Hey, back.”
Percy’s tone lacks any of the warmth he usually (okay, sometimes) shows me, and this week I truly thought something was changing. He was becoming more open to me. We were becoming… I don’t know exactly.
I swallow. “What are you up to this afternoon?” There’s a hidden message hidden in between the words, and Percy knows it.
His mouth curls into a smirk, but it’s not the usual, excited and hungry look. It’s cold and arrogant and patronising.
“Y/n,” he says. “Why do you ask?”
“Um.” His expression is throwing me off, tilting the world sideways and off-balance. My hand kind of waves in midair, like I’m trying to explain something I don’t understand. “Do you want to… meet in your cabin?”
Percy chuckles under his breath, almost scoffing at me. I blink, taken aback. What is happening right now?
“You do know I have other people to spend time with, right?” The way he says it makes me nervous. “Like, gods, you've been so in my life this week, y/n. Give me a break.”
I suck in a breath. “Okay, yeah, sure. We can—space. Got it.” I awkwardly shoot him a double thumbs-up, and immediately regret it.
Percy just looks at me, until a cold feeling of realisation crawls over my skin as the double meaning behind his words finally sinks in. Other people to spend time with. So, other girls to sleep with, is that what he means? Of course it was what he meant. This was Percy Jackson. Did I seriously think we could ever have something real between us? Something beyond the teenage dream of hasty secrecy and hot pursuits?
I purse my lips, and by Percy’s eyes, I know that he meant what I am thinking.
I force a nod, kirt and quick, and turn on my heel. Whisking myself away to hide, hide from him, the rest of camp, and most of all, my feelings.
I was absolutely crushed. Crushed to my core, like a broken piece of apple, trodden down and sinking into the ground. And sink I did, to my knees in the dirt and grass, hidden behind a line of trees in the woods. I hold my breath in check for a count of eight, before my emotions tumble out of control, and I cry.
I let myself cry, because I had also let myself love him, against my better judgement and every single sensible thought in my being.
I loved Percy Jackson, and now I have lost him.
“I love you,” I whisper into the whistling wind. “I’m sorry.”

◭ "And who cares to know anymore?" ◮ - Percy Jackson
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘∘₊✧──────✧₊∘∘₊✧──────✧₊∘
Many can recognize that when Percy tends to have thoughts, he’ll look into the distance and it’d be obvious as to where they’d wander off to. How his thoughts would darken to the same type of darkness that he’s seen back in Tartarus, twisting shadows bundling up to a robe that’ll tighten which each struggle he’d make. His struggles would falter to a point where he’s accepted that nobody could free him , could save him, could fix him.
Who’s to say that everyone didn’t bother to know anymore? Nobody’s bothered to understand what’s happened above the surface of Percy’s thoughts, overflowing with the sink running that not even he can swim in it anymore, for once he can’t swim. For once, Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon…
Can drown.
For once, Perseus Jackson can drown and sink to the bottom where he’s belonged all his life, deserved to drown and to lose everything and everyone around him. The life in his sea green eyes leaves him, leaving his broken body behind with his broken soul crumbling when leaving its crumbling shell, bound to break at some point. Because Percy isn’t immortal,
He rejected that offer, remember?
But it’s better to have stayed mortal and grow older, rather than stay sixteen [16] and outlive those who have helped him from himself. Because had that been the case, he wouldn’t have witnessed the fall from his friends, watching their lives be taken so heartlessly by Gaea. Five [5] of them, at least…
From Frank, to Piper, to Leo, to Hazel… To Annabeth. And he felt himself drop to his knees as the water as salty as the ocean pooled his eyes as the rain poured down his scarred cheeks, breath coming out sharp and shallow with his throat drying up, choking. How could the hero, the hero, let this happen again?
“No-“ he’d whisper shakily, shaking his head with his body trembling as Riptide clattered on the floor beside his knee, a hiccup leaving his bloodied lips. No, he’d think, lowering his head and holding it between his palms before hiccuping once more, again and again.
His nails dug into his skull, sobbing as his chest heaved up and down. This couldn’t happen again, don’t let it be true, please. Don’t tell him that he’s lost his friends again, please, don’t hurt him this way…
Please, please, dear gods- if you truly have a nice bone in your body, please, he is begging for his life at this point… Please, tell him that it’ll be okay, that some of the gods would be a bit generous and bring them back to him. Bring back those that have helped him on the way, saved him on the way.
Fucking hell- “Fucking hell!!” Percy sobbed once more, calloused and scarred fingers tugging on his black locks, pupils shrinking bit by bit, eyes squeezed shut. It’s not like it’d do much, though, it’s not like it’ll bring any of them back. Crying won’t bring them back, nothing could honestly, and that’s all thanks to him again.
It’s the same shit all over again, it’s the same damn shit all over again, all fucking over again.
Over and over.
And over and over.
And over and over.
He just keeps ruining it all the time, now look what he’s done. Look at the mess he’s created this time.
But who cares, hm? Who cares about how he feels, rather than what actually matters, who cares to know what the kid feels at the moment?
Who cares to know that the kid lost his friends and is now dealing with this misery, like per usual.
Oh who cares…
His chest felt so tight and it reminded him of the time he’s choked that goddess once, now he’s choking, he’s choking and god- Is this how much misery Misery took? Is this how it felt? Surely he’s felt miserable before, why does this surprise him? He’s grown so accustomed to these things, he’s witnessed them, heard them-
Done them.
The scream he let out was from bottled anguish he just couldn’t be bothered to release, he’s never let himself be above anything else, he could wait. But everyone else couldn’t, and everyone else is gone. So he screams… Perseus Jackson screams in anguish.
In anger.
In pain.
In fear.
Everything he’s felt through all these years came out in one blood curdling scream, how surprising it was that the ground didn’t shake the same his father would make it do. No surprise here, to be honest, because he may be the son of Poseidon… But Poseidon isn’t loyal, his son is, though. And because of this loyalty, this excessive personal loyalty that got them dead.
Stupid boy, stupid, pathetic boy. Thinking he could save his friends, his family, at that. Look at him, look at this pathetic excuse of a hero. Screaming turning to cries before resolving to pathetic sobs, crumbling like the overused piece of paper he was, eventually tearing apart until this was all that was left.
This mistake.

The smoothness with which Percy puts his arms around Grover is great. Those are BESTIES
Hell yeah Perseus

Daughter of the Sea
Chapter Fifteen: I Meet a Shadow (Read on AO3 here)
It took a little work to convince Paul that Poseidon had left via the fire escape, but since people can’t vanish into thin air, he had no choice but to believe it.
We ate blue cake and ice cream until we couldn't eat any more, then we played a bunch of party games like charades and monopoly. I won charades, which Tyson didn’t get, but it turned out he was really good at Monopoly. He knocked Percy out of the game in the first five rounds, me two rounds later, and then he started bankrupting mom and Paul.
Percy disappeared into his room, but I stayed and watched for a while. I wanted to soak up all the information I could about my new family. I learned that Tyson had the biggest heart of anyone I’d ever met, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t ruthless when it came to board games. Paul was smart and calculated, but also easy-going and fun. Mom was…well…perfect. Watching her did make me miss my adopted mom, though, but having Sally there made me feel warm and protected, and most of all, loved.
It was hard for me to believe I had just met them.
After a while, I figured I should see where Percy went. I walked down the hall, hearing Paul protesting as Tyson took over another one of his properties, and took a turn into Percy’s bedroom. He didn’t notice me, since he was standing on the fire escape outside the window. His back was to me, and I watched as he planted a small seed in a planter box, the full moon shining down on him, casting a silver tint on the world outside. He poured something from his camp canteen on the dirt, and he waited.
Nothing happened at first, but then a tiny silver plant sprang out of the soil, shimmering in the dark night. It seemed to radiate its own silver glow, and something about it reminded me of the dreams of that beautiful island I had while Percy was missing.
“Nice plant.” A voice said from outside, and I jumped at the same time my brother did. I couldn't see who was there, and my fingers made their way up to my new necklace all on their own, ready to strike. When you’re a halfblood, any unknown is potentially dangerous.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you.” I could barely make out the voice saying.
“That’s—that’s okay. I mean…what are you doing here?” Percy responded. I relaxed a bit. If my brother wasn’t afraid of or threatened by the voice, then I figured I shouldn't be, either.
“I’ve done some exploring. Thought you’d want to know–” he stopped short, and I was just starting to wonder why when he spoke again. “You’ve got a shadow.”
I didn’t realize he was talking about me until Percy turned around, his face concerned and ready to fight. He relaxed immediately when he saw me, even smiling a little.
“Come on out, Ange. I want you to meet someone.”
I sheepishly made my way out onto the fire escape, feeling caught. Percy didn’t seem to care that I had been watching, though. He helped me out of the window and once I was standing next to him, he spoke.
“Angie, this is Nico di Angelo, son of Hades. Nico, this is Angie. She’s my sister.”
My eyes and Nico’s went wide at the same time. He spoke first.
“Your sister? What do you mean?”
“She’s my sister, like, my actual sister. Her dad is Poseidon and, uhh, we have the same mom.” I let Percy respond, and I stood staring at the boy in the shadows.
“Huh. Why not?” Was all Nico said. If he had more questions, he didn’t ask them.
“It’s, uhh, nice to meet you.” I said with a weak smile. “How did you get on the fire escape?”
“Shadows are kinda my thing.” He said flatly. I nodded—that makes sense, I thought. He looked just like I would expect a child of Hades to look—dark messy hair, dark eyebags, black, tattered clothing, and eyes so brown they were almost, you guessed it, black. I realized he had been the emo kid in the battle, the one who opened a fissure in the earth. There was something unsettling about him, too, as if his very aura radiated death and decay. The shadows seemed to bend toward him, like they were trying to swallow him whole. Just being around him made me wanna turn and run, but I steeled my nerves. Percy didn’t seem scared by him, and I trusted my brother.
“Like I was saying,” he started playing with the silver skull ring on his finger. “Thought you’d wanna know, Percy, Daedalus got his punishment.”
“You saw him?” At the mention of the events of this summer, Percy seemed to forget that I was there.
Nico nodded and filled Percy in on the details he saw down in the underworld. Just the thought of that place made me shiver. I knew that Percy had been down there before, and I didn’t know how he did it. Being surrounded with so much death and sadness would send me running.
Nico tapped at his silver ring. “But that’s not the real reason I’ve come. I’ve found out some things. I want to make you an offer.”
Percy perked up at this. “What?”
“The way to beat Luke,” he said. “If I’m right, it’s the only way you’ll stand a chance.”
I saw the color drain out of Percy’s face, and in the moonlight he looked like a ghost. I could practically feel how much pain the mention of Luke caused him, but he took a deep breath and his eyes went steely.
“Okay. I’m listening.” Percy said.
Nico glanced inside the room, and his eyebrows furrowed. “Is that…is that blue birthday cake?”
He sounded hungry, maybe a little wistful. It sounded like he had never had birthday cake before, or even been to a birthday party. I knew what Percy was about to do before he opened his mouth.
“Come inside for some cake and ice cream,” he said. “It sounds like we’ve got a lot to talk about.”
He looked uneasy, and he opened his mouth to (I assume) protest, but then his stomach growled. Percy cracked a smile and began to climb in through the window, so I followed. He offered nico his hand, who looked at it for a few seconds before taking it and climbing in the room after us. I handed Nico the slice of uneaten cake from the dresser, and he began eating it before we were even in the hallway.
Percy and I walked into the living room as Paul flipped over the Monopoly board. Tyson sat there with all the colorful money, beaming. My mom was laughing as she turned to look at us, but her smile faltered when she saw the small, skinny boy behind us.
“Mom, you remember our neighbor Nico who lives a few doors down and likes to climb the fire escapes, right?” Percy spoke in a way that made it clear to me that Sally had never met the son of Hades before. Luckily for Nico, she was a quick thinker.
“Oh of course!” she said, putting on her smile again. “Percy mentioned you might stop by.” She was on her feet in moments, and Paul only looked mildly confused.
“Hello, Ms. Jackson. Nice to, uhh, see you again.” He stuck out his hand for a handshake, which mom accepted. He may have been a son of the underworld, but he knew his manners.
“Your fire escape seems to see a lot of action.” Paul said with a raised eyebrow. Percy just shrugged.
“Keeps things interesting.”
Paul left shortly after, so we didn’t have to keep the charade up for long. As soon as the door closed on him, the mood shifted and everyone dropped their smiles.
“Thanks for the cake and games, but we should probably go somewhere to talk.” Nico said to Percy, breaking the silence. He seemed to be having a genuinely good time, though, and it was nice to meet another child of the Big Three.
He also seemed to carry a weight around with him, a burden that he shouldered all on his own. A burden that should've been too heavy. I recognized the sadness in his eyes—I had seen it in my brother. I had seen it in my own reflection.
The two boys disappeared into Percy’s room for a long time. I helped mom and Tyson clean up, but soon my cyclops half-brother was asleep on the couch and I was laying on the floor reading my favorite book. Percy and Nico still hadn’t come out.
Mom was starting to get worried, so I offered to go check on them. I could tell she wanted to, but didn’t want to interrupt whatever serious demigod business they were discussing.
I had no problem interrupting.
As I approached Percy’s closed door, I started to hear snippets of conversation. Percy sounded agitated, while Nico remained calm. I paused outside the door to listen.
“No way, Nico. It’s too dangerous.”
Nico’s voice was muffled, because his tone was lower, so I could only make out a few words. “...the only…explain…invincible.”
“That’s just crazy!”
“...done before.”
“I can’t. I won’t.”
“You don't have a…wait a minute.” The boys were quiet, and I heard footsteps approaching the door. I tried to turn and stealthily make my way down the hallway, but Nico was too quick. I was only a few steps away when he flung the door open.
I turned, expecting to see the blazing eyes of the angry son of death, but instead I saw a lopsided smile and warm eyes.
“I told you shadows were my thing.” Nico’s tone was playful.
“Our mom, umm, she was starting to worry. She wanted me too…”
He chuckled and then sighed. “Come on in. You should probably hear this, too.”
I walked in the room to see Percy sitting on his bed, his hands on both sides of his head, tangled in his hair. He looked extremely stressed out.
As soon as Nico filled me in on his plan, I understood why.
After a couple of minutes, there was a tentative knock on the door. I offered to get it, since Percy was still processing and this wasn’t Nico’s room. I opened it to see a very concerned Sally Jackson.
“You didn’t come back. I was starting to wonder if you three had taken off.” By the worry in her voice, I could tell that sort of thing had happened before.
“Sorry, mom.” Percy piped up. He tried to smooth his hair and make himself look like he wasn’t on the verge of a breakdown. “There’s just…a lot Nico had to fill us in on.”
Hearing him say us made me happy in spite of the tense mood.
“It’s okay.” Mom replied, sounding relieved. “I understand. Things are happening in your world that I can’t help with, even though I wish I could.” Her eyes were kind and sad, and for the first time I thought how hard it must be to be the mortal parent of a halfblood. To have your children be a part of a world you never could enter, to fight battles you didn’t understand and carry burdens you didn’t know about. No wonder she sounded so scared.
“I should go.” Nico said, shifting awkwardly. “There’s more work to do. I’ll stay in touch, Percy. Think about what I said.” He started to walk towards the fire escape before turning back around. “Nice to meet you, Angie.” He then turned toward my mom. “Thank you for your hospitality, Ms. Jackson. The cake was delicious.” And with a small smile, the boy climbed out the window and disappeared into the shadows.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
The Percy Jackson series got off to a wobbly start but a sequel had every opportunity to expand on what worked and ditch the rest. Now that we’d gotten over all the introductions, we’d be able to dig in properly. Maybe we could explore a more complicated story, get to know the characters better and see them grow the way the heroes in the Harry Potter series did with each subsequent chapter. Unfortunately, your hopes for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters are dashed away by Marc Guggenheim's terrible screenplay. By the time it gets to a conclusion that promises “we’ve got even more coming in the third one!” you want to tell it not to bother.
Tumblr media
Set some time after the events of the first movie, Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) is the son of Poseidon, a demi-god who trains at Camp Half-Blood with the sons and daughters of the Greek Pantheon. His best friends are Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), a satyr, and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), the daughter of Athena. When the magical tree that protects the camp from attacks begins to die, the trio chooses to defy their elders’ orders and go on a quest to save it. To do so, they must travel to the Sea of Monsters and recover the Golden Fleece. Tagging along is Percy’s newly-discovered half-brother, a cyclops named Tyson (Douglas Smith). While Percy wonders if he’s up to the task or simply a one-quest wonder, the cyclops’ presence worries Annabeth.
The problems are immediately recognizable. Percy worries he’s not the hero of legend because he’s only saved the world once? How can anyone relate to his “woe is me” attitude? Similarly, Annabeth not trusting Tyson just doesn’t feel right. It’s pretty obvious her aversion to the one-eyed dummy stems from some past traumatic experience but the film fails to make us understand why she’s all secretive about it. We see cyclopses act villainous but those are big, adult ones that tower over our heroes. Will Tyson even grow up to be that size? He seems too stupid to pose any threat. She simply comes off as racist.
It begins on the wrong foot and from there, things don’t get much better. We learn of a prophecy. We're told a child of the three elder gods will either save Olympus, or destroy it (what’s the alternative?) while battling with Luke Castellan (Jake Abel), the villainous son of Hermes that served as the antagonist of the previous film. I could’ve sworn he was dead, but sure. Now I know what you’re thinking. Hmm. What a coincidence. Didn't we just meet a new son of Poseidon mere moments ago? I won’t say too much but let's put it this way. This is a baaaad screenplay that makes obvious mistakes. Tyson’s part in this story is one of them.
As our heroes travel outside of Camp Half-Blood, they obviously have to travel inconspicuously among Muggles, which means they have to disguise Tyson using a magic potion… that Annabeth brought along with her for no reason? Their means of travel is a discount-version of the Night Bus from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the price of admission is a torrent of horrible jokes the film thinks are really funny. You tolerate them, always reminding yourself of that titular Sea of Monsters. "Once we get there, things will turn around." I’ve got some bad news for you. There aren’t a whole lot of monsters in this movie and when we encounter them, they’re kraken-sized disappointments. Every confrontation between the heroes and the villains feels like a piece of cake. At least the special effects are pretty good but this whole adventure feels like it’s missing something.
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is nothing more than a knockoff of the Harry Potter films. Whether this is the case with the books as well I can’t tell but if it was implied with the last film, it’s cripplingly obvious here. Percy Jackson 2 puts all of its weight on familiar tropes and plot threads like its left leg’s just been chopped off. It can’t even manage to do that right. Numerous plot threads and characters are introduced and given no purpose. This film's intended audience is too smart to fall for such a lacklustre sequel. (February 14, 2020)

Okay I have more to say on this here’s a breakdown on why Marina literally wrote this song for Percy:
Tumblr media
So the song is thought to be about Marina’s poor relationship with her father. She’s scolding him for being absent, pretentious, looking down on her and her mother and abandoning them for an upper-class lifestyle and new family.
This part makes me think of how Percy views his dad, notably before he meets him properly at the end of The Lightning Thief.
His mother had to work a job she didn’t want and marry a man who abused her (and Percy) just to keep them afloat and keep Percy safe. Meanwhile his father was just, yknow, a god. Chilling in an underwater palace. Just casually being one of the most powerful people in existence. Percy probably views him the same way he would a rich, privileged man who’s lived a sheltered life meanwhile he and his mother have been through so much.
This part in the song really sounds condescending to me in the same way.
Tumblr media
This part I think is pretty self-explanatory. Percy has been slave to the will of the gods since he was 12 and he’s been over it since he was 14. But unfortunately, most of the time it’s “do as the gods ask or the world is literally going to end” so he doesn’t have much of a choice. He has no free will when it comes to being a hero and doing his father’s bidding.
“Only got bad things to say” Percy has been calling out the gods since day one, he was literally 12 years old and cussing out Ares and I love him so much for it.
Tumblr media
Here Marina is either talking about herself or her mother being left behind by her father who sought (and achieved) a better life.
Percy has the same kind of resentment towards Poseidon. Like I said, Sally had to work a job she didn’t want and marry asshole-Gabe whilst Poseidon was just chilling on Olympus. Percy no doubt felt like he and his mother were abandoned by Poseidon (which they absolutley were).
Tumblr media
This I think is also self-explanatory if you know literally anything about Percy ‘pay-your-child-support’ Jackson.
On several occasions Percy has openly critiqued the gods and Poseidon has warned him consistently not to, definitely more out of fear of the gods wrath than out of embarrassment, but I think it still fits.
As for “upper-class wife” I’m kind of using upper-class as a metaphor for godly or divine life vs. mortal life if you couldn’t tell, and Poseidon has an immortal wife: Amphitrite. And if I’m remembering correctly, Percy actually meets her and she is, of course, not fond of him or his existence. Cause Percy doesn’t have enough of that in his life as it is.
Even though Poseidon has said multiple times that he is madly in love with Sally and offered to make her immortal to live with him in the sea - which I absolutely believe, as does Percy - I still bet Percy harbours resentment for Amphitrite and her existence makes him question how much Poseidon truly loves his mother.
Tumblr media
This reminds me of Disney-series-Percy especially. He keeps saying “I’m Sally Jackson’s son” and I don’t think this is just out of love for his mother, he’s literally trying to tell the people around him “look I may be a demigod but I’ve spent all twelve years of my life being raised as a mortal in an abusive household. I am not qualified to go on this deadly world-saving quest I can’t even do a kick-flip”. Everyone keeps expecting him and pushing him to be this great hero but he’s literally a twelve year old kid who gets his lunch money stolen.
Tumblr media
Now this would work better if Marina said 16 considering, yknow, the prophecy. But 17 still seems like it would be a really big deal to Percy.
Percy turned 17 only two weeks after the battle with Gaia. He was supposed to die at 16 in the original prophecy.
I think he would’ve been so grateful to have made it to this age but also wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about all the kids who died before him, all those that never even made it to 17.
Jason freaking Grace died before he turned 17.
I feel like this age in particular haunts Percy. He should be at the height of his teenage-hood, getting his liscense and first car, taking his girlfriend to prom, thinking about what he’ll do after high school. But Percy’s 17 and undoubtedly living with PTSD, survivors guilt, nightmares about not one but two wars to save the world in which he saw many friends and children die, trauma from going through literal hell. He didn’t even think he’d make it to 16, but here he is, 17 years old carrying all this baggage and now having to plan out the rest of his life that he didn’t ever think he’d have. I know a big part of him is so angry that life turned out this way, and this part in the song really conveys anger and resentment to me.
He never wanted to be a half-blood.
Tumblr media
This part to me sounds like Percy recognising that he’s technically the Prince of the Ocean, that he’s his father’s favourite son, that he is child of one of the most powerful and important gods, and trying to be grateful for that. But ultimately I think if he could give up being a demigod he would in an instant (as long as he could still be with Annabeth).
He would kid himself when he was younger into believing that he was lucky or important, that he’s a hero, but as he’s gotten older and more disillusioned with the gods he’s realised that this is just the horrible life that demigods go through, being child soldiers, being hunted by monsters and often not even making it to seventeen.
Seventeen by Marina is SO Percy-coded I know he listened to it for the first time and bawled his eyes out and now it’s on every playlist and he screams the words every time

The Set-Up
Tumblr media
Leo Valdez x Daughter of Poseidon!Reader
Word Count: 940
Warnings: Mentions of food and eating, mild language
Request: Leo Valdez x Reader where the Aphrodite cabin finds out the reader is in love with someone and Percy (being their big bro) tries to comfort reader and find out who they love. maybe he sets them up??? (any pronouns will do)
Requested By: @officialfictionalwreck
A/N: This is monthsss late but I hope you like it anyway. It was super fun to write!
The unfortunate thing about your best friend being a daughter of Aphrodite is that it is impossible to keep it a secret if you have a crush on someone.
You’ve tried your best to keep it under wraps - never mentioning Leo around Lennon, avoiding the son of Hephaestus at all costs, attempting to show an aversion to the concept of love altogether - but you should’ve known she would find out at some point.
“So, who are they?” Lennon asks, plopping down in front of you with her hands under her chin.
“Hm?” You look up from your book in confusion.
“Oh, don’t play dumb,” she says. “I know you’re in love with someone.”
You’re unable to respond for a moment. “What are you talking about?” you say when you find your words.
Lennon rolls her eyes. “The dreamy looks, the constant zoning out, the random smiles - face it, (Y/N), it’s obvious. So who is it?”
“Not telling,” you say, turning back to your book.
“(Y/N)!” Lennon whines. “I’m a daughter of Aphrodite, I need to know.”
“Ah, but that is precisely why I’m not telling.” You smile coyly and wink before walking away.
~
“So, who are they?” Percy asks when you enter the Poseidon Cabin.
You stare at him. Now, Lennon was bound to find out. Percy, on the other hand, is the most oblivious person you’ve met in your life. “What?” you squeak.
“Your crush,” your brother replies. “Piper told me about it.”
“How did Piper - “ You groan. “Lennon!”
“You have a crush on Lennon!?”
“No!” You look at him incredulously. “Lennon figured out I like someone. She must’ve told the entire Aphrodite Cabin. Gods, this is what I get for being friends with an Aphrodite kid.”
“Aw, damn.” Percy puts an arm around you. “You upset?”
“Nah, not really. At least no one knows who it is.”
“Oh, that reminds me.” Percy looks at you intently. “Who is it?”
“Nice try, Jackson.” You get up and walk out of the cabin.
“(Y/N)!” he whines.
~
Percy has made it his life’s goal to find out who your crush is. Unfortunately, he’s had no luck so far. He’s followed you as closely as he can, watching who you talk to, examining your reactions to everyone you interact with, but he hasn’t noticed anything out of the ordinary. He’s about to give up when he sees you with a certain son of Hephaestus. Your cheeks are flushed, your movements are nervous, you can’t stop smiling - Percy has no doubt about it. You are in love with Leo Valdez.
Percy immediately forms a plan to set you up. He’ll tell Leo to meet him in the woods for some running practice and tell you to go with him on a picnic. Then he’ll spy from the bushes just to make sure everything goes well. And that it doesn’t go too well.
“Leo!” Percy runs up to the son of Hephaestus. “You wanna go on a run with me?”
Leo gives him a weird look. “Uh, sure. When and where?”
“The woods around one.”
Leo nods and goes back to working on Festus. Percy executes step two of the plan next.
“Hey, (Y/N/N),” he says casually.
You look up. “Oh, hey Perce. What’s up?”
“You wanna go on a brother-sister picnic this afternoon?”
You blink, surprised. “Sure.”
Percy grins. “Great. Meet me in the woods around one.”
“Got it.” You smile back and go back to reading your book.
Percy’s grin widens as he turns away. “It’s all coming together,” he says to himself, quietly enough that you can’t hear him.
~
When you get to the woods you’re filled with confusion. The picnic is there, but Percy is nowhere in sight. Your confusion only grows when Leo runs through the bushes.
“Why are you here? Where’s Percy?” the two of you say in unison. You blink at each other.
“Percy told me he wanted to go running,” Leo says.
“What? He told me he wanted to go on a picnic.” Then it dawns on you. “Gods damn you, Percy,” you mutter under your breath. You sigh. “Well, we can’t let this picnic go to waste.”
“Oh, thank the gods,” says Leo in relief, plopping down on the blanket. “I really hate running.”
You let out a laugh and sit down beside him.
“It’s so weird that he told us both to meet him at the same place at the same time, then didn’t show up,” says Leo through a mouthful of food.
You laugh nervously. “Yeah. Weird.”
The picnic goes by in a blissful hour of talking, laughing, and stuffing your faces. By the time the food is gone, you’re not even mad at Percy for setting you up.
“Hey, can I ask you something?” Leo says as the two of you pack up the picnic.
“Of course,” you reply. “Ask away.”
“Would you wanna do this again sometime? But like, as a date? I really enjoyed talking to you.”
You look at him in surprise. “I…”
“Yes!” You hear a cry from the bushes before you can respond.
“Huh?” You and Leo rush over to the source of the noise, only to find Percy hidden in the leaves. “Percy!” you exclaim.
“Uh, hey, (Y/N/N)!” He smiles sheepishly. “How was the picnic?”
“You set us up,” Leo realizes. “And then spied on us!”
“Maybe?” Percy winces.
“Get out of here, Percy.” You shake your head irritatedly, but you can’t help but smile just a bit.
“Fine, fine.” He tumbles out of the bushes and brushes himself off. “But, for the record, it worked.”
“Out!”

it’s been nearly 2 thousand years since Percy Jackson has died. poseidon has not been seen much after his favorite sons death.
it’s raining and a new camper is being chased by a monster. they get to thalias tree and rip off one of its branches. the child uses it to kill the monster, just before passing out. their father got kidnapped by a god that needs their help. poseidon does not like this parallel
the first person they talk to is chiron, trainer of heroes.
“so what’re saying is that im the child of a god?”
“yes young man, that is correct.” chiron responded while giving the tour to the boy.
“so then it’s my mother that a goddess, correct? do you know who?” he asked as he turned to face the centaur.
“im sorry, but i do not know who your mother is. she could be a minor sea god…” chiron said as he subtly looked towards cabin 3, the poseidon cabin. the cabin that hasn’t been touched in 2 thousand years.
“oh.. well why do you think it’s a sea god? is it because i like water? is it because i kicked the monsters ass while it was pouring??” the boy said as he mimicked punching movements.
“yes, that is why i think that…” chiron said as he continued moving.
the centaur and the boy continued on the tour for a few more minutes before chiron suddenly said, “you remind me of someone.”
this caught the boys attention and he turned to five chiron, “hmm? who do i remind you of?? were they a child of a sea god??” the kid was jumping on their toes and gasped at something they had thought of, “did they come to camp the same way i did???”
chiron turned to look away from the boy, he had dark brown hair, with one sea green eye and on sea blue eye. he had never tried so hard not to cry in his life, he hated how much this 12 year old reminded him of him. he knew if he said this out loud poseidon would not be happy, so he said it wasn’t too important but that, ‘yes you two did come here the same way’ and finished the tour.
—————————a few hours later —————————
“dionysus, they’re so similar it hurts.” chiron said as he sat down across from the god. dionysus no longer worked at the camp, but he had grown fond of it and decided to pop it to help and chat every now and then.
“yea, i know. and if they are a child of a sea god- any sea god, im not too excited to see what barnacle beard would say about that.” the god said as he took a sip of alcohol, “anywho- do you know what the kids name is? cuz i know i sure don’t.”
chiron turned his attention from the ground next to him to the god in front of him, “im sure i had asked his name, but i don’t think i was listening. can’t seem to remember it.”
the two sat in comfortable silencing for a few seconds before they hear the new camper yell, “I GOT CLAIMED!”
chiron and dionysus went out to see who the boys mother was and say a holographic owl above his head, athena, goddess of wisdom and strategic war.
“ah, good’ol war goddess, guess he’s not a sea spawn.” dionysus commented to the right of chiron as the centaur moved forward.
“hello young man, i have a short question for you,” chiron said, then proceeded when they boy said he could ‘ask away’, “what is your name again? many years working here makes it hard to keep track of all the names.
“fair enough for not remembering, i also have memory issues!” chiron laughed at that, “anyways my name is Percy Jackson!”

I have the headcanon that Percy IS a Mycenaean Demigod, but only inherited the connection to the Ocean. His Mycenaean side comes in from the sheer, raw power he's capable of: it's mentioned that he's one of the strongest children of Poseidon to exist, if not the strongest. (He can also manipulate Underworld Rivers, despite actively struggling to do so.) It also explains why Zeus is so terrified of him: Percy's the living reminder of the past that Zeus has tried so hard to bury.
i think so too! percy’s connection to the ocean is astronomical, given no other demigod with “primordial” or “elemental” powers feel as raw and as instrinsically there as percy and the ocean. mycenaean poseidon has that and so does percy. is jason invigorated by the air and wind and storms? no! in fact, his powers drain him!! nico has the same problem and so does hazel in a way. percy feels like the water is a part of him and that he can instantly come back for more when he’s near the sea!! leo can run out of fire….percy literally can’t. he can summon the ocean from within himself at any time if he wanted to (the mt st. helens incident is proof of this). ur right, it probably all boils down to the source or parentage. jason and thalia and hazel and nico are offspring of the greek gods…. just a small version of what they truly are. and i don’t think percy is the son of only mycenaean poseidon. i think he’s the son of everything poseidon has ever represented in history, but the mycenaean version is more predominant for the fact that he’s so powerful. anyway. yeah. zeus looks at percy and sees the threat of his kingdom swallowed by the sea. it’s like. he has built so much over the millennia just for poseidon to rise again. every extraordinary thing percy does is taken into this lense, this cautionary reminder, that everything can come to an end, and that there’s a reason why there was a time when poseidon was the king of the gods, and not zeus. the ocean takes what it wants.

I see where you're coming from with the musical choices, and yeah, I can respect that the sound and structure of the saga are definitely strong. The vocals and the narrative arcs do tie together really well, I can give you that. But from a literary perspective, the issue is that what the characters are doing doesn't always hold up. Music can amplify the emotion, sure, but if the foundation isn't solid, it doesn't matter how great or symbolic the vocals are.
First, let’s talk about Athena and Odysseus. You’re saying it’s a ‘gentle reminder’? Sorry, but I can’t get on board with that. He brushed her off. She is laying her heart bare, and he actually cuts ties with her. The relationship that was so complex and crucial earlier just gets reduced to him rejecting her for the sake of a “monster arc.” It doesn’t track, and that’s a problem. This moment could have been so much richer, but instead it feels hollow and forced. She’s literally been absent from his life for ten years because of his disobedience, yet when he’s at his lowest, stranded, helpless, and begging for help, who does he call for? Athena. And what does she do? She defies Zeus and goes to bat for him. She risks everything for Odysseus, and when she finally does show up to help him and his son? He just blows her off. That doesn’t sit right with me.
The emotional depth of their relationship isn’t just about ‘him choosing revenge and violence,’ it’s about the history between them, and the rejection of her is such a disservice to everything they went through. She could have stayed away, she had every right to. But she didn’t. She’s been there for him despite his mistakes and disrespect, forgiven over ten thousand mistakes and now, at the pinnacle of his journey, she’s left vulnerable and questioning everything — and he rejects her. That feels like a betrayal of everything Athena has done for him. It’s one thing for him to grow darker, more monstrous, but to dismiss Athena in that moment just feels like an easy plot device rather than a meaningful emotional choice.
The whole idea of Odysseus ‘moving on from Athena’ because he’s now a ‘monster’ just doesn’t work — literally or thematically. This isn’t a natural progression of his character. This kind of rejection could have been poignant if there was a deeper exploration of Odysseus’ corruption, but instead, it’s treated like a cheap plot device. If Odysseus truly is a ‘monster’ now, his rejection of Athena should have been earned, showing us how far gone he is and how he’s lost everything that made him human.
Odysseus had this ideal: ‘‘If I become a monster, it’s to everyone but US.’’ That was the rule. This means that, as long as he’s ruthless, violent, and feared by the world, he’s still loyal to the people he cares about — back then his crew, and now his family. Think about how Poseidon’s a monster to everyone except his family, or how Circe’s seen as ‘‘insane’’ by everyone but her nymphs, or even Polyphemus, who kills without guilt to protect his sheep friends. They’re all monsters in the eyes of the world, but to their inner circles, they’re still the same. Now, if Odysseus really becomes this monster — if he truly embodies this brutal, ruthless version of himself — why on earth would he push Athena away? Athena is his circle. She’s not an ‘enemy’ or a ‘casualty’ of his monstrousness; she’s the exception. The idea that Odysseus would reject Athena after everything she’s done for him completely contradicts the logic of his own ideals. His monstrousness was never supposed to extend to the people who matter to him. Thunder Bringer was different because there was some heavy shit at stake. Here? There is literally nothing. His wife and son are home, they are safe. If he’s truly become a monster, then Athena should be the last person he pushes away.
It doesn’t matter how far Odysseus has fallen — his rejection of Athena doesn’t make sense, even within the monster arc. We know Odysseus hasn’t moved on from his humanity because, in the very scene after that, he’s asking Penelope if she’ll still love him once she knows the extent of what he’s done. That’s not the behavior of a monster who’s totally detached from their past or their relationships. That’s a man who’s still grappling with the consequences of his actions and desperately seeking validation from the one person who’s always had his back. It’s not like he’s acting irrationally. He knows exactly what he’s done, and he’s worried about the consequences. It’s that self-awareness that makes his rejection of Athena feel completely forced and out of place. He’s still searching for connection, still longing for understanding. So for him to reject Athena, who’s been the one constant presence in his life, just feels like a completely forced move. The scene doesn’t track with the rest of his journey. He hasn’t moved on from her, so why would he push her away in such a harsh, unnatural way?
Now, Telemachus? Oh, no, no, no, I definitely disagree with that one. Telemachus being docile isn’t some deep character development. It’s just lazy writing. I get that it's a retelling, and sure, characters can change, but when you strip away everything that made Telemachus a force to be reckoned with, you’re left with a shadow of the character that actually existed in the Odyssey. The kid who nearly strung Odysseus’ bow? Yeah, that kid would not be the one just standing around waiting for daddy to come in and save the day. Sorry, but that’s just not Telemachus.
If the idea is that Telemachus doesn’t need to copy Odysseus, then why in the world should it make sense for him to copy his younger self or even someone like Polites? I mean, come on, this whole ‘open arms’ approach is supposed to be this big moment of character growth, but we’ve got no reason for Telemachus to suddenly become this merciful, welcoming guy. From a literary perspective, it’s even worse because it completely ignores the fact that Telemachus is angry at the suitors. We know this. What happened in the story to make him do a 180? Absolutely nothing. And that’s where the story fails: Telemachus doesn’t need to copy Odysseus, but he sure as heck doesn’t need to copy some version of himself or another character that doesn’t even fit the narrative.
This whole thing could’ve actually made sense if we had the one character who could’ve shaped that decision for him: Peisistratus. In Epic, though? Peisistratus doesn’t even exist. That’s a huge missed opportunity. Peisistratus is the perfect person to guide Telemachus toward mercy. We see in the Odyssey how Peisistratus’s presence helps balance Telemachus’ youth with his sense of responsibility and honor. The two of them have a bond that could’ve very easily translated into Telemachus developing a more measured, merciful approach to his father’s enemies. They share something deeper than just friendship after all, though we could go into that conversation another time, I’m not about to open that can of worms right now. Without Peisistratus, though, Telemachus' decision to have 'open arms' feels completely disconnected from everything we know about him. He’s spent years watching the suitors destroy his home, and suddenly he’s the one calling for mercy? That doesn’t track. If Epic had kept Peisistratus, his quiet wisdom could’ve been the perfect foundation for that decision. Telemachus could’ve struggled with his own instincts to take vengeance and found the courage to adopt a different path because of the influence of his friend.
But no. In Epic, Peisistratus isn’t even around to be that grounding presence. Instead, we get a Telemachus who acts out of character, with no real justification. If they’d just kept Peisistratus in the story, it would’ve given Telemachus’ arc the depth it desperately needed and made his 'open arms' thing make sense. Instead, we get an empty, confusing decision that comes out of nowhere and leaves you scratching your head. If you actually take a look into their characters, that is.
So no, it’s not just about not copying Odysseus — it’s about the fact that Telemachus has no reason to be copying anyone. That kind of transformation needs to have substance, and without it, we’re left with a character who feels more like a plot device than an actual person. If Telemachus were to have a change of heart like that, it would need to be earned. Which it was absolutely not.
I get the whole musicality thing. Yes, I’ll give you that: the music is brilliant. It’s a whole different level of genius, and that’s clear. But we’re not talking about music here, are we? We’re talking about story, character arcs, and how the narrative holds up in its own right. The music is amazing, but it doesn’t get a free pass to paper over the fact that the story drops the ball in some key places. I can respect a musical for its execution, but if the writing falters in its foundational elements, I can’t just ignore that. This is all coming from a place of respect. Debate like this is important, and it’s how we really dig into stories and their meaning. But I’m going to be honest: I can’t agree with these takes. At all. It’s not about trying to tear anyone down; it’s about looking at the story critically. I respect other perspectives, but when the reasoning behind something doesn’t hold up, I’m going to call it out. There’s a difference between an intentional creative choice and one that just doesn’t make sense, and I think we crossed that line here. So, no shade, no hate — I just can’t agree.
Things I did NOT like in the Ithaca Saga.
Okay, it was fine, but there were just...choices... There’s just stuff in that section that had me rolling my eyes so hard I thought they’d get stuck.
First up: "Hold Them Down." I get that Epic is trying to make the suitors worse villains, but the way they went about it was disgusting. That song outright says the suitors were planning to force themselves on Penelope, which is not even remotely in the Odyssey. Yes, the suitors are terrible — they’re greedy, arrogant, would-be killers who exploit her hospitality — but this crosses a line that feels like shock value rather than staying true to the source material. They included that song, but erased Calypso’s actions toward Odysseus? In the Odyssey, she held him captive for years and forced him into a relationship. That is literally such an important part of the story. Yet, not only did Epic omit it, but they also banned people from even discussing it in their Discord server. How does that make sense? You can explore one kind of assault but not acknowledge the other, especially when the one they ignored was actually canon? The double standard is infuriating, and it completely undermines the narrative’s integrity. Yet somehow this suitor nonsense made the cut? Make it make sense, because I can’t. Next, Telemachus. Why did they do my boy so dirty? In the Odyssey, he was brave, capable, and growing into his own. He fought beside Odysseus, killed suitors, and even comes this close to stringing Odysseus’ old bow, which is supposed to be impossible for anyone but...well. Odysseus. That’s a huge moment! It shows how much he’s grown and how much of Odysseus’ strength and legacy he carries within him. But in Epic? They turned him into some weak, helpless little thing who can’t do anything without Odysseus. Like, hello? Telemachus isn’t just Odysseus’ son; he’s a fighter, a prince, and a man trying to defend his home. Stripping that away to make Odysseus look like more of a hero is just lazy and disrespectful to the original story. They took away his courage, his growth, and his ability to hold his own. It’s like they didn’t trust the audience to see Odysseus as a hero unless Telemachus was made to look useless by comparison. And then we get to Odysseus and Athena. What even was that? Yes, the idea that Odysseus has become a “monster” is a fascinating angle—he’s been through so much that revenge, violence, and survival have completely overtaken who he once was. But Ithaca does nothing to earn this shift, and it outright ignores the groundwork laid in earlier sagas. Two sagas ago, we saw Odysseus at his lowest. He was stranded on Calypso’s island, completely defeated, and begging Athena for help. Let me say that again: begging. And this wasn’t just any goddess he was calling out to — this was the mentor who had abandoned him as a student. She had walked away, and he still reached out, still trusted her to save him when no one else could. That moment showed Odysseus’ faith in Athena and their deep, complicated bond. Calypso.
And Athena? She didn’t just listen—she fought for him. She went up against Zeus himself to make sure Odysseus could leave that island. She defied the king of the gods because she believed in him. Odysseus doesn’t know that detail, but we do, and it makes her devotion to him so much more impactful. She risked everything to give him another chance at life, at home, at redemption.
Fast-forward to Ithaca, and what do we get? Athena shows up, vulnerable and introspective, questioning the path they’ve taken and the world they’ve built, and Odysseus just brushes her off. He doesn’t just say no — he dismisses her entirely. His response boils down to, “Not my problem. I’ve got a wife to see.” Excuse me, now? This is the same man who was crying out for her intervention just two sagas ago. The same man whose survival has always depended on his intelligence, resourcefulness, and the help of others — Athena most of all. Now he’s too proud to even engage with her? It doesn’t track. It’s inconsistent, and it cheapens their relationship. She’s opening her heart, showing her vulnerability, wondering if there’s still a way for them to fix what they’ve broken. She didn’t owe him anything, but she did it because she believed in him, because she had invested in him from the start. So for him to now completely disregard her — when she’s in front of him, showing empathy and pain — feels like a betrayal of everything that came before. Odysseus’ monster arc didn’t need to erase Athena. In fact, rejecting the one person who literally raised him, who fought for him, who saved him so many times, doesn’t even make sense for his character. That’s not the arc of a man who’s become a monster; that’s just cruelty for cruelty’s sake.
This is someone who has given everything to Odysseus, and in this moment, she’s realizing that the person she fought for is no longer the man she thought he was. And that’s what’s tragic.
But Ithaca doesn’t explore that. Instead, it uses Odysseus’ rejection as a cheap plot point, stripping away the emotional weight of his relationship with Athena. She was the woman who raised him, who guided him, who saved him — and they reduced her to a mere plot device to show how “monster-ified” Odysseus has become. It’s lazy, it’s cruel, and it completely disregards the depth of their bond. The pain in Athena’s voice, the heartbreak in her words, is completely wasted.
Odysseus doesn’t need to be a monster who rejects Athena to be a tragic figure. The tragedy would have been in him choosing revenge and violence at the cost of his humanity, not in cutting ties with the one person who raised him into the hero he became. Ithaca could’ve explored that, but instead, it gave us a shallow, hollow portrayal that didn’t respect the characters, their history, or the emotional weight of their relationship. Ithaca is a hot mess, and it’s honestly embarrassing. It had all this potential, and yet it chose to phone it in with lazy writing and shallow plot twists. It throws out big ideas and then does nothing with them, leaving us with empty, unearned moments that just fall flat. Instead of digging into anything meaningful, it relies on cheap drama to get a reaction. The story feels rushed, disconnected from the other sagas, and like the creators couldn’t be bothered to put in the work. They had an opportunity to make something impactful and then just decided to half-ass it. If you're looking for a mess of missed potential, Ithaca is your go-to. That being said, the songs are sick and I will sob again over the last song. Thank you.

Vol. 1: Just Keep Swimming // Ch. 4
Type: Poseidon x reader
Word Count: 2,000+
Masterlist
————————
It is early in the morning by the time you wake up. So early that the sun hasn’t even risen over the horizon. Over the ancient city of Athens.
Even Triton is still in bed at this time. Cocooned in a thick fluffy blanket on top of Alexander The Great—The righteous name for the Stuffed King Turtle—with pillows surrounding him like a nest. It was at times like these that you wondered if Triton was part bird, perhaps the son of a harpy, rather than aquatic.
However, that was the last thing on your mind right now. Your eyes flickered down to your phone, staring at the text messages Bella had sent you last night.
—Heyyy (y/n)💕💕! Long time no see! Thanks again for helping out with the festival again ur the best. —
—Btw I heard from the rumor mill that u have a son. Why don’t u bring him along for the festival tomorrow? We can watch him quickly during ur shift and then you can have fun with him after. —
—There is also going to be cotton candy and fireworks! It will be lots of fun for the kiddo 😉😙.—
Letting out a sigh, you rub your aching temples, already feeling a headache coming on. You knew Bella meant no harm, she really is just a playful airhead at heart after all. But, it didn’t reassure the fact that it sounded like the whole school by now has found out you have a kid. Which didn’t please you in the slightest.
Especially since some of your classmates can be as toxic as snakes. You didn’t want to bring Triton anywhere around people like them.
Then again, it wasn’t like Triton couldn’t handle himself, he was more than capable after all. You found this out the hard way after he picked up a Boulder twice his size yesterday like it was nothing.
It would also be nice for the boy to have some fun for once instead of staying inside all day. Today was going to be sunny and nice out. A perfect day to play and go outside.
Decisions. Decisions.
“…Mom?”
At the call, You peel your eyes away from the screen to look over. Triton had already scurried out of his nest like bed in the corner of the living room by the time you looked up. His hair was tousled in every which way direction as he rubbed his eyes with sleepiness. A cute yawn left his lips before he finally opened his eyes. Their pale Ocean blue glory looking up at you.
“Good morning Triton.” You cooed at the young boy as he stumbled his way over to you on the couch. He practically collapses onto you, rubbing his face into your stomach for a couple of seconds before relaxing.
You chuckle as he mumbles a good morning in return, at least what you guessed to be, though it is hardly hearable.
It is silent after that for a few as you two take in the quiet morning atmosphere. The birds chirped from the window and you could even hear the soft sounds of footsteps from your neighbors above. The world was slowly waking up.
However, as much as you wanted to stay there for longer and relax, the alarm on your phone dings. A painful reminder that you should start getting ready for the festival.
Groaning, you attempt to peel Triton off of you so you could get up but the boy doesn’t budge. You attempt a couple of more times but after hearing a small giggle from said boy, you give up.
Shuffling up from your spot, you stand up but still Triton doesn’t budge. His knees drag on the ground slightly as he falls off the couch but he recovers quite quickly by using some of his powers. Making himself float effortlessly in the air as he stays latched onto you.
You let out a small sigh but don’t care to stop the boy. Instead making your way to your room so you could finally get ready.
As soon as you enter your room however, the peace doesn’t last long as after you tell him how he has to get out so you could get changed, Triton is forcibly thrown out of your room with a pout on his face.
“Mommmm!”
Triton leans against your door with a whine. Already missing your presence even though he knows it hasn’t been that long. He stares at the door handle in temptation but frowns as he knows he shouldn’t. That he should respect your privacy as you get ready.
“Mommmmmmm!”
“Triton, please! I’ll be out in a few!”
—.—.—.—.—
You wondered if you should have asked Zeus more about aquatic gods. Especially in a time like this.
“Triton… Sweetheart? I need you to let go of my leg so I can walk.”
“B-but—“ Triton stutters out, his grip on your leg tightening as the bus begins to screech to a halting stop. You weren’t sure what was up with him but he was very clingy today. He wouldn’t take no for an answer when you told him to stay home today. Forcing you to bring him along.
You seriously wondered if today was something special that was making him act so strange. Perhaps something that pertains to gods. Aquatic gods especially.
“You can hold my hand instead. I just can’t walk with you holding onto me in this long dress and sandals.”
Hesitantly, Triton lets go of your leg and grasps your hand. He seems content with this type of contact for now but you don’t know how long it could last. Especially when you start waiting tables. The last thing you need is Triton using his powers to spill hot tea onto customers.
“(Y/n)!”
“Oh, Bella.” You announce as said girl spots you in the crowd as you enter the festival.
“So nice to— Oh my, This must be your son!” Bella coos out, squatting down slightly to look at Triton who quickly hides behind you. “Such an adorable boy and… Oooo~ Look at how nice you are dressed up.”
Startled by Bella’s comment, you take a step backwards, “Huh?”
“Oh, don’t play coy with me. You are like the bell of the ball. The—“ As you and Bella bicker back and forth, you miss how Triton puffs his chest out at Bella’s previous words. He knew how beautiful you—His precious mother—looked right now.
You were wearing a white and blue thin silk-like dress, one that flowed as effortlessly as the waves of the sea. Bracelets, Choker, earrings, all of it was shining gold. Not even Apollo, god of the sun, glimmered with as much gold as you. Your makeup was flawless with your cheeks and lips dusted in a light red to add color to your face.
Honestly, in Triton’s opinion you were even more gorgeous than Aphrodite herself. Though, he would never say that out loud… you would be in trouble with the goddess if he did.
“Woah… Dude look…”
At the sudden voice, Triton looked over. A group of males were looking at you from afar. Clearly, mentally agreeing with Triton on how pretty you were. Though, it seemed as if they couldn’t bring up the courage to make their way over to greet you. Chickening out whenever you happen to even accidentally glance their way.
“You can look but you can never touch…” Triton snickered to himself, humming a small tune in content as you finally wave Bella goodbye and go on your way.
After a while of mingling in and around the crowded area, you finally make it to your section. It was thankfully easily spotted with all the decorations of colorful fish and blue fabrics that flowed throughout the air.
“Woah! It’s like we are underwater!” Triton awed as he looked up. “Mom, this is—“
“Ahhh! Is that your son (y/n)?”
“Wait, he's here?”
“Oh my!”
Startled, you two look over to your right as three of your classmates walk over. It seemed that you were correct when you thought that the rumor must have spread about the whole school by now.
“His name is Triton.” You explain to the girls as they looked down at said boy. Triton once again hid behind you but that didn’t do much as they still cooed and asked questions to him. Feeling bad for the poor boy, you decided at that moment it would be best to leave him in the back where more of the male staff was located so he would stop being ogled at. Though it would also sadly leave him out of your sight for a while. “Well, we have to get going for my shift. I will see you three later.”
“Of course!”
The girls smiled kindly at you before all at once cooing, “Bye Triton!”
“B-bye…” Triton stutters out, looking at them from around your leg quickly before hiding again.
“Ahhh so cute!”
“I know right!”
“My. I’m so jealous of—“
As you walk away, you wait a little for the girls to be enough ways away before looking down at Triton, “You're really shy today, Triton.”
Triton lets a smile whine out in detest and clutches onto your leg more, “You can’t blame me, mom. I’m not used to girls and affection from them. My old mom scared all the women away from the palace, remember?”
“True. True.”
Finally, after many obstacles—too many in yours and Triton’s opinion—you had made it to the tent. By the time you had got there, it was already bustling full of customers and you knew you had to hurry.
“Now this way, Triton.” You tell the young boy as you bring him to a seperate tent. Being careful not to bump into the other waiters or chefs as you lead Triton to an area in the corner with the supplies. “Mom has to wait tables for now so I need you to stay right here alright. I’ll be back soon, if you get hungry you can ask Jeremy or Paul for food.”
At the sound of their names, two of the chefs look over and wave.
“But mom…” Triton whines, upset that he has to let you go, “…Can’t you stay.”
“I’m sorry but I can’t. It will just be an hour until the actual waitress I’m covering for arrives. Then you have me for the rest of the day alright?”
Triton’s face looks unsure. Still not completely content with letting you go just yet.
“Don’t worry little man.” Triton jumps a little as Paul pats the top of his head, “Your mom won’t be gone for long. In the meantime, I know how to pass the time real fast. I can teach you how to make a mean sundae.”
“R-Really?” Triton questions out, looking worriedly back and forth between you and the male. Seeming to be struggling to fight against taking the bargain the man has given him.
“Of course, you won’t even notice time has even passed by the time mom picks you up. Now, what do you like in your sundaes?”
As Paul takes Triton away, you mouth a small thank you to your classmate before giving Triton a wave goodbye. Just as you are about to turn to walk a way, you feel a hand on your shoulder.
“Don’t worry (y/n). I’ll make sure to watch your son while you are gone.” Jeremy says, shaking his head in discontent as he remembers, “I saw how those girls were harassing the poor boy earlier.”
“Thank you so much. I promise I’ll be quick.”
“Of course don’t worry about it.”
As you leave the tent, you give Triton one last look goodbye. He wasn’t looking at you at the time as he was much to busy scooping huge chunks of oreo ice cream into his bowl. Concentrating to make sure they were stacked perfectly on top of each other.
You felt a sting of worry and doubt bubble up in your stomach as you continued to stare at Triton. Unsure if it was okay to leave him like that. But, you quickly push it away, once you see Paul right behind him. Close by to help him if needed.
Triton will be okay.
Triton will be okay.
Okay.
That’s what you kept telling yourself.
But, little did you know,…
…that wasn’t the case.
