LUNCHTIME CONFESSIONS

Nicolette scans the selection of food in Edenbrook’s cafeteria, the low hum of conversation a buzz in her ear as she concentrates on what’s in front of her. Nicolette’s nose scrunches in disgust at the questionable lasagna, soggy burgers and the very not-so-nice-looking stir-fry that reside under the heat lamps. Edenbrook was one of the best hospitals in the country but why did the cafeteria have the worst food ever? The only thing edible in what this hospital calls for food is a salad. It’s healthy but shouldn’t there be more of a selection? 

Who has ingredients for salad and then decides to put sardines with it? Ugh.

Nicolette muses bitterly, her eyes flicking over the food with distaste. However, her gaze doesn’t pull away from the food even when her stomach growls with hunger. 

“Sounds to me like you’re hungry, Valentine.” 

Nicolette jumps, her gaze tearing away from the food to the tall man standing beside her, holding two Tupperware containers, his tall stature almost tense. His blue eyes regard her with amusement as flush pricks her cheeks at being caught staring at the food and her stomach growling. 

The attending beside her gives her a small smile, the grin lifting his lips in a simple gesture that kicks her pulse up a notch or two. Her thoughts then go back to what happened the previous night and her knees threaten to buckle all over again at the heady, passionate embrace she had found herself in. 

It’ll never cease to amaze her how much of a profound effect Ethan had on her and her body. He was like a magnet, always on the opposing force and she’ll always be drawn to him. 

From the looks of Ethan’s expression and the way his eyes had changed to a darker shade from his baby blues, his thoughts had diverted to the same place as hers had. Her stomach does a flip flop, her skin alighting in flames as the ghost of the sensation of his hands on her waist, his kisses on her neck and her lips make themselves known…

Ethan shakes his head as if to eliminate the cobwebs that have his mind thinking of nothing but the woman in front of him. How Nicolette had wound her way into his every thought continued to allude him but deep down inside, to a place he’s always tried to hide, he’s not surprised in the least. She’s the only one who’s gotten past his defences and stuck around. He’s not all that upset about that idea, in all honesty. Nicolette’s special and he’s quite happy about that fact. It’s better to have her here now than not ever.

Ethan brings his hand up to rub the back of his neck in a nervous tick, the Tupperware in his grasp feeling like lead as well as his tongue. 

“Well, I was wondering if you’d like to, uh, have lunch with me considering all your help last night preparing it. I didn’t want to let it go to waste so I thought—” 

Nicolette raises her hand to stop Ethan’s words, a laugh bubbling up in her throat. “Wait...wait. You actually saved me some?” 

Ethan stares at her as if what she said wasn’t entirely obvious. Didn’t she realise that he listens to every word she says? Cares about her opinion? He kept his glasses and beard for her because she liked them. Isn’t that proof enough? 

“Yes, I did.” 

Nicolette’s eyebrows furrow as she takes a step back, her eyes trail down his frame until they spot two distinctive blue Tupperware filled with what definitely looked like the Georgian Stuffed Chicken from last night. 

Nicolette’s stomach erupts in butterflies, and her heart swells with affection for the attending in front of her because it had become clear that he took her words quite seriously. Whether it’s dinner, his appearance or if he should keep his green jacket or go back to his old-grandpa cardigan. 

“Why?” 

Ethan’s next words confirm her suspicions. “Because you asked me to and I didn’t want to forget so I put some aside for you before I went to bed. My dad liked it so I’m sure you will too.” 

A gentle smile graces her face and Nicolette has to resist the urge to grab Ethan by the cheeks and smoosh them together like he was a toddler because he was so goddamn cute. 

“Hmm... I’ll believe you when I eat it.”

“You’ll never know unless you try some.”

Never did Ethan think he’d be nervous but alas, here he is, standing in a public place, where his colleagues can see him, asking his junior fellow to have lunch with him, whilst holding two Tupperware containers holding the meal that they made together. 

Oh, boy. Naveen isn’t going to let him live this down. 

Ethan’s nerves gave way to frustration when Nicolette hadn’t uttered a word for a full minute, her eyes sparkling in unabashed glee. He was aware that they only had an hour for lunch and that hour was quickly winding down. He huffs, pulling the containers closer to his chest. 

“So?” 

That single word held many connotations and Nicolette has to giggle a little at the implication of his tone. She read him loud and clear.

What’s your answer? Is that a yes? Will you have lunch with me? Hurry up and tell me so I don’t embarrass myself even more. 

“Yes, Ethan. I’ll have lunch with you.” 

Ethan’s shoulders relax at her confirmation and a grin lifts his mouth and he gives a nod before turning on his heel and heading to his office, Nicolette following behind him silently.

“Is it good? Do you believe me yet?” 

Nicolette closes her eyes against the spice, the perfect mixture of both herb and spice exploding on her tongue and she has to suppress a moan from the taste. 

“Mmm, this is wonderful, Ethan. Chef Ramsay would be proud.” 

Ethan chuckles at her words. “I’m sure Gordon Ramsay is far better equipped in the kitchen than me but I suppose I should feel flattered at the compliment.” 

Nicolette nods, smiling around the fork that’s lodged in her mouth. She swallows before saying her next words. 

“You should. You both are two of the best ‘Ramsey’s’ in the medical and hospitality world. It’s a shame you two haven’t met.” 

Ethan has to struggle not to choke on the chicken making its way down his throat but he laughs anyway, the food thankfully going down without any need of the Heimlich manoeuvre. 

Ethan’s office is quiet as both he and Nicolette fall into a comfortable, companionable silence as they eat, both wrapped up in their own thoughts.

It’s then broken by Nicolette clearing her throat and it’s right there that Ethan can feel the air shift as if what she’ll say next will determine what happens for the rest of his life. He’s not going to pretend that the thought doesn’t scare him but, maybe, he’s a bit excited about the prospect? He’s lived too long in solitude.

His diagnosis is right with Nicolette’s next words. “Is it later yet?” 

Ethan stops chewing, placing his fork down beside his container and squares his gaze on the redheaded woman beside him, a small chuckle of amusement escapes him. She’s definitely referring to last night.

“It’s been less than 24 hours, Rookie.” 

Nicolette shrugs, her eyebrows raised and a mischievous smirk on her face. “Call me curious.” 

Ethan regards her with bright eyes, the blue shade almost startling against his already handsome features. Nicolette has to remind herself not to stare too hard otherwise she’d burn a hole right into his face and she didn’t want that. She’s already made a fool of herself in front of him today, albeit, unintentionally.

He smirks, the corner of his lips pulled up in an almost mischievous tenor, one that was almost uncharacteristic for someone as level-headed and cynical like Ethan. 

“Oh, I know. That’s one of the reasons why you are such a good doctor. You’ve always been curious. Curious to understand your patients and to research that extra mile to help them. It’s what you did with the twins who needed help with their insurance and it’s what you did with Theresa Martinez. You are special.”

Nicolette beams at the compliment, her heart flying out of her chest at the praise. It doesn’t come often and especially from a renowned doctor like Ethan. She’s more ecstatic at the fact that there was a softness to the praise that Nicolette doesn’t hear often and it made her melt. This was coming from Ethan...not Doctor Ramsey and, if she was being honest, she fell for him a little bit more than she already had right then.

“I love this praise, Doctor Ramsey because we both know it’s all true,” Nicolette laughs at her little joke and Ethan joins in. “...but I know what you’re doing. Stop skirting around the question. Tell me.” 

Ethan leans back against his chair, the leather squeaking in the silence of the room. “If you insist…” 

Nicolette leans forward, her chair inches closer to Ethan’s, so much so that their knees are touching, the atmosphere around them almost heady with expectation and the unreleased tension that always floats around them crackles. 

“So? About us…?”

Ethan gives her a searching look, the blue in his eyes almost sparkling, a soft smile lifting his lips. 

“Yes. Well…” 

Nicolette nearly jumps out of her seat in frustration, the restlessness settling into her nerves and making her antsy. She restrains from whining but she can’t help a little of it to seep into her exclamation. 

“Ethan!” 

Ethan chuckles, his eyes crinkle with his laughter and Nicolette notes that it makes him all the more handsome. “Alright, alright.” 

He takes a breath and continues, the nerves clearly getting to him as the sigh comes out all shaky. Ethan then looks up at Nicolette, the intense focus of his eyes earnest, truthful, as if he didn’t want Nicolette to doubt him at all.

“I’ve had time to think about this thing between us...and I’ve realised that I don’t want to restrict my feelings anymore,” 

Ethan stops to gather his thoughts before he continues, trying to form a coherent sentence. All Nicolette can do is try to remember how to breathe.

There’s a definitive nod of his head before Ethan continues, his voice void off all hesitation.

“All I know is that I don’t want to miss out on something that is so good. You are so good. A beautiful, caring, determined woman who’ll go to the ends of the earth for her patients. I don't think I’ll find anyone else like you,” He smiles. “I think it's time for me to finally get rid of these expectations and rules that have ruled my life for thirty-seven years and just jump. Take a dive into the deep end. Take a leap with you.” 

The emotion behind Ethan’s words are enough to make Nicolette’s eyes burn, her nose tingles with the onset of tears that are yet to fall from her green eyes but she’s hard-pressed not to squeal or sob right in her seat. 

Even with his beautiful words, a sliver of trepidation runs down her spine, that doubt taking place in her heart. He’s done this before. He left for two months to the Amazon to get away from her. He doesn’t inspire much confidence in the feelings department as much as she wishes he did. 

“Are you serious, Ethan? You’re not going to backtrack and preach to me about how you're an attending and you don’t want to distract me from my learning and this won’t work in the long run—” 

Ethan surprises her by grabbing her hand, his fingers easily slipping between hers. The pad of his thumb caresses the side of hers in soothing circles. His blue eyes are earnest and warm, the sight of him looking so vulnerable and open makes her feel light-headed, her chest swelling with affection for him. 

Ethan’s voice holds conviction and truth and Nicolette’s soul soars. 

“Nicolette. I’m serious. I’m tired of trying to fight this. It was inevitable from the start— and I don’t know why I fought so hard to begin with. I’m a stubborn man and I know I’m stupid for taking this long to realise what was right in front of me. You are too important to me to lose to some trivial rules and boundaries that I have set between us. You are the most important person in my life...I don’t know what I’d do without you. My life has been changed and I thank you for being the catalyst for that.” 

Nicolette doesn’t hold back the tears that fall down her cheeks and Ethan frowns while swiping them away gently, his eyes flooding with care and concern. 

“Nicolette? Are you alright?” 

Nicolette has to gather herself before she responds, taking a deep breath as her hand's envelope Ethan’s that was resting against her cheeks.

“Ethan, I am perfectly happy right now. I have been waiting months for you to come around and it’s paid off. All I’ve wanted from you is, to be honest with yourself and you've done that all by yourself so I’m proud of you but I also want to thank you.” 

Ethan winks, the weight of what was to be a thousand tonnes on his shoulders for the past few months lifting. It allows him to breathe again, his heart at ease, so much so that he takes a cleansing breath, a radiant smile brightens his face at the feeling. 

Who would have thought being honest like this would make him feel this free? 

Ethan brings his hands down from her face, her hands encased between his and squeezes them. “Thanks for being patient with me. We’re going to make this work. I promise.” 

Nicolette winks, a smirk lifting those lush pink lips of hers to the side, a gleam in her eyes. She feels so happy. So light. This is actually real. 

“You’re welcome, Doctor Ramsey. You bet your ass we’re gonna make this work. And I have an idea how.” 

“Oh? Pray tell, then.” 

“Considering I’ve been so patient...you can make it up to me with a date.” 

Ethan leans back against his chair, his eyebrows raising, his interest piqued. “Oh? So soon?” 

Nicolette nods, the utter confidence in the action making Ethan grin. “Of course. We need to make up for lost time.” 

The smile that graces Ethan’s face threatens to make Nicolette drop to the floor in a while of goo from the warmth flooding from him. But the laugh that escapes him following his smile? That was her favourite sound. So bright and so carefree that it makes Nicolette want to fly away into heaven and she would have if Ethan didn’t have a tight grip on her hands, his fingers entwined with hers. 

Ethan locks eyes with Nicolette, his heart picking up pace as he stares into the green emerald of her eyes, so disarming that he has to remember how to breathe. A surge of excitement pulses through him as he says the next words. 

“Well...I suppose we’ll have to remedy that as soon as possible, Doctor Valentine. Are you free tonight?”

“Where has the sunlight gone, that I am always unable to seek out its pooling warmth in my times of need?” It crouched down to the hardwood floor beneath, slowly propping itself onto all fours. It shivered from the sudden cold touch the ground radiated, it’s hairs standing at immediate attention.

“I can make it.” Groaned the determined creature. From the darkness a bellowing voice bounces off of the surrounding walls; “Stubbornness is not a trait of admiration, foolish thing.”

The isolated being turns its head rapidly in every direction, desperate to pinpoint the intimidating voice’s hideout. “What would you know about admiration? You cower in shadows rather than speak in the light.”

An eerie creaking could be heard echoing down the dusty corridors. It wonders. It contemplates if this new entity that has audaciously introduced itself is alone, if it is different, if it is dumb, if it is on a similar quest. In short, if it is truly a threat.

“You say cower, I say strategize. Though, that is something that you know nothing about.”

“You dare mock me, enemy?” It’s body tensed on instinct, leaning forward in an offensive position.

The interacting voice lowers into a raspy, shallow whisper, barely audible to anything not within its reach, “A harsh label for who you can not see, weak one.”

A slashing noise breaks through the mold of what once was just a conversation. Heaving breaths occupy the atmosphere until a complete still of silence coats them all. A pin would be heard if dropped to the floor.

The startled being inspects itself for wounds, only to find none. “I still contain purity.” It gasps out in relief.

“You can not hold what you were never given to grab.” It can tell the voice is noticeably aggressive now.

Suddenly, a gust of wind emerges, blowing the frightened creature back. Two glowing stars stare down at its frail figure slumped against a corner of the room.

The creature’s pupils dilate in bewilderment, eyes widening like saucers. “Hello… light.” It says while stalking forward, cautiously.

“I am not the light you search for. I am but its messenger, sent here to guide you.”

“Then why have you attacked me? How vindictive the light’s carriers must be to start wars with beings more miniscule than themselves.” It scoffs, head thrown to the side.

“What is war to you is a battle to me. I have done no such thing to you, not yet.” The giant owl spread its wings out, its body spanned the width of the area, its height reaching to the very ceiling they were concealed under.

“You claim yet… So that means-”

“Do not fret. What I reference will not commence today nor tomorrow nor the next day.”

“The day after that?”

“Possibly.”

A soft, symphonic melody begins to roll through the smaller creature’s mind at the sight of this majestic and cosmic being beforth it, urging it to move. “May I?” It asked respectfully, bowing its head.

“Of course.”

The youthful thing gleams with anticipation as it stalked ahead. It delicately stroked the owl’s dark, chrome multi-colored feathers in awe of the natural beauty they reflect. “I am mesmerized by you now more than in my dreams, what a wonder you are to witness.”

“An honor it is to be dreamed about, a sorrow it is to be mistaken as an identity I bear no relation with.”

The creature is hardly listening to the honest words the grand owl expresses and instead continues to explore the many miles of its physique. “I have yearned for this day for ions, and you have the gumption to tell me my waiting is not at its expiration date?”

“If that is how you’d prefer to see it, who am I to try and convince you otherwise. However, that is not near what I said, on the contrary.”

“You will lead me to the light?” The naive creature jolts back, its teeth for once being shown in what could only be described as a smile rather its usual sneering.

The owl rolls its sparkling eyes, a slight chuckle escapes past its inner cavities. “No. You will lead yourself. I have given you all you need to find your way.”

A glare paints itself across the younger’s face, a scowl breaks through from the conflicting information. “And what is it that you have supposedly gifted me with other than a mighty headache, magnificent beast?”

“What you assumed was an attempt at your life was in fact a touch of your soul. I have bestowed upon you the strength of the universe. The stars you see as my eyes are what now lies inside of you as well.”

The animal paces back and forth before swiftly lunging onto a nearby wall, forcing its weight against it. An extravagant thud is sounded on impact as it slammed into the hard structure and instantly fell down to the ground once again.

“I sure do not feel this so called strength.”

“Well, what do you feel?” The mighty, cosmic bird asked, entertaining its temporary companion.

“The same as I always have.” It replied with disdain entangled in its tone.

“Describe this emotional consistency you speak of, fellow.”

“Do not fret. For I have become content with my position.”

The owl roughly shuts his wings around itself. “If that was truthful, you would not be seeking for anything.”

“I suppose.” It sighed heavily, giving the two distance from one another. “I feel too much, but I admit misery is the underlying master of all the strings attached to this puppet. I fear the darkness is the hand masquerading as my puppeteer. The light is the only cure for me now, my singular hope, my last chance at an utter freedom I crave to taste if even for a second.”

“I see. It seems to me that you are an animal of captivity. I do hope you see yourself out of this cage soon, to ever feel the power you’re fortunate enough to have been granted.” It turns its back to the solemn creature.

It tries to rebuke the flying master of the sky but no words leave its agape lips.

“I speak for the universe, you know? Not just myself, as wise as I am.” It drifts off into incoherent mumbles that only fascinate the humbled creature whose attention is finally undivided.

“May I ask you a question?”

“One.”

Its voice trembles, thumbs curling into the wood below, “How big is the Universe?”

A frustrated breath exudes from the owl as if its been asked this very inquiry time and time again. “Infinite and endlessly expanding. Thousands of galaxies inhabit its vast space, most never knowing of each’s survival. It is as deep as the sea and as wide as the atmosphere you breathe in each morning. It is unforgiving but oh, so gentle. It is all the religions you could know of and all the gods you could read about. Are you pleased with this newfound knowledge?”

The mammal looked lost in thought, busy processing such an intricate web of words that was left to imagine for itself.

“I am intrigued… Why have you asked me this of all the many things you could have asked me?”

“I am unsure of that myself.”

The owl hummed in comprehension. “How transparent of you.” Its wings fawned out to reveal themselves once more. “Now, I must exit.”

“So soon? You have merely just arrived, my friend. Please, do not abandon me.”

“I will offer you a slice of advice, since you consider me an ally.” The owl’s head swiveled around its body in a slow, steady motion.

“Molt.” Then, as fast as it had arrived, it vanished into thin air, as if evaporated.

“What does that mean?” The lonely animal cried out into the empty void.

Salty droplets of water streamed along its skin. It reached its hand to its face to caress the area they’d fallen, but something else had been removed when it wiped. It glances into its own palm to be met with sheets of its own flesh. Panic occupies the room as it starts to hyperventilate at the sight, its chest rising and falling at an alarming pace. “What is happening to me?” It exclaimed, rocking back onto its bottom to sit while gazing up at a black beyond.

“I will not let this cease my movements. The light beckons me still.” Crawling towards oblivion, it strives to complete its ambitious journey.

Hours pass, the sun is set but it is blissfully unaware of the missed opportunity. The weather has decreased into the negative numbers, freezing over most watery surfaces and otherwise. The animal’s skin is no longer, it shed whilst traveling. Muscle could be seen peeking below the final layer, peeling off as it halted to a shortstop.

“I am melting to the bone. At this rate I won’t be waking tomorrow.” It lied down, sprawling itself out in a snow angel form. “I bid this world farewell, and pray there will be another much sweeter in my consciousness. With this last request, I accept my closure.” It fluttered its eyes close, allowing sleep to take over.

“Rise.”

“Rise.”

“Rise, my child.”

With a huge gulp of fresh air, the creature shot up. An odd heat filled its core. Eyebrows furrowed, it scanned around the location. For the first time since its birth, it could see. It was never trapped in any labyrinths of halls, it was a cave, a cave decorated with carvings on every inch of the walls. Everything was illuminated, nothing was left unpainted by the light that shone brightly from within it. It peered down at its chest to gawk at the blinding ball of ember-like light that floated inside the confinement of its now-skeleton chest. A singular, last tear slid out of the slim pocket of its eye, its clenched jaw loosening.

It cupped its bone hands, bringing them to its chest. “You were with me the entire time, weren’t you? I was too blind to recognize you underneath all of the chapters of my body. No matter, though, at last we are reunited.”

“What are you?”

The animal inhales, leaning a hand on its knee, then hunching over and exhales to stand upright. It turns around to face a small boy, his expression clearly mesmerized by the glowing undead. “I am light.” It said confidently.

With those words announced, its muscle and skin started to grow back until it covered its whole body. A permanent glowing aura outlining itself like a personal highlighter remained for a few moments, until the being took a step across the invisible line that separated them.

“You’re not light. You’re human, like me!” The boy observed cheerfully.

The person knelt on one knee, a firm yet comforting hand resting on the little one’s shoulder.

Reassurement was evidence in the way the person said, “We are much more than that.”

CHAPTER 3 / The Peculiar Perils of Straw Hat Parties

Common commentary throughout the 5 seas held that Straw Hat parties were notoriously wild. This is something that Trafalgar Law, as well as the rest of his crew, are learning first hand. Not that Law particularly feels like partying; after Dressrosa, the Heart Pirates Captain has a little soul-searching he’d like to attend to. But one tends to become… drawn in, to certain things around Luffy—regardless of one’s plans or intentions. This is how Law finds himself developing an unlikely and unexpected friendship with his ally’s navigator—and how that friendship, much like Luffy’s parties, grows far beyond his intentions.

Chapter 3: The Consequences of Poor Party Planning

“Hard to Port! HARD TO PORT!”

Nami clung to the bannister of the top deck as though her life depended on it (and realistically, it probably did) as she shouted instructions to Franky at the helm. Remaining upright was a struggle, the vicious rocking of the ship threatening to dissolve what tenuous equilibrium she had established in her inebriated state. Violent gusts whipped her hair in every direction, cold rain pelted her face, and as a massive wave came crashing down—just shy of where the ship had been moments ago—she debated just how hard she was going to pummel Luffy when all this was over.

The storm had hit fast and hard, but she’d been able to give enough forewarning to the two crews that they were, so far, successfully staying just ahead of the worst of it. How long that would continue to be the case, however, she wasn’t sure. They were in no shape to navigate the Sunny: Usopp was completely passed out after his game of sake-scotch—tucked away in the men’s quarters by Zoro before they set off; the usually unflappable Zoro was unsteady on his feet as the ship rolled violently with the tide—a sure sign of his extreme level of intoxication; Luffy was struggling to keep his meat down, and Brook couldn’t stop laughing at Zoro’s frequent stumbling and subsequent cursing. What little headway they had made was entirely attributable to her early detection. The storm was gaining—and their ability to outrun it was rapidly deteriorating.

“Franky—we need a coup de burst! We can’t keep this up!”

“The cola engine is empty—it needs a new barrel! You’ll have to do it, though, I’ve gotta stay on the wheel!” Franky shouted back, holding tight to the spokes as they pulled violently starboard.

Nami worried her lip. Traversing the ship in her current state and in the present conditions—with every wooden surface slick with rainwater, was firmly in the “bad idea” category; but she didn’t have much choice. She eyed Franky’s wrestling match with the wheel and took a deep breath to steady herself.

“Alright—be ready! We need to head directly east by southeast to outrun the storm!”

“You got it, sis!” He then turned his attention out to the deck. “Oi! Everyone! Raise the sails!”

Wiping sopping hair out of her eyes, she gripped the railing tightly, taking careful steps towards the deck stairs. It felt like an ageless journey to get to the rear of the ship—her progress slowed by the ship’s turbulent thrashing. She was forced onto all fours as she crossed the lawn deck due to a sudden bout of nausea; though she rather hoped at the least that lowering her profile would reduce the likelihood of being blown off the ship by a violent gust. After covering in almost five minutes a distance that should have taken less than thirty seconds to cross, she found her way aft. Sliding down the ladder into the bowels of the ship, she planted her feet carefully on the floor of the cola room, wiping water from her face and taking quick stock of her surroundings.

The cola engine was currently filled with empty barrels as Franky had said, and she quickly set about removing them. She struggled to place the full, fresh barrels in their place—heavy in their own right, made worse by the unsteady ship—but eventually managed to work all three into place with a final, frustrated kick. She breathed a sigh of relief as she heard Franky shouting instructions topside, then the whir of the engine coming to life.

She turned to make for the ladder again, grateful that it would soon all be over—however that was where she made her mistake. Grabbing hold of the rungs, she didn’t get more than four feet up before she heard a particularly strong wave violently crash against the side of the ship, and felt a sudden, sharp lurch. With her weary grip and wet shoes, she lost her footing and tumbled down the ladder, landing harshly on her ankle and feeling a resounding crack followed by a sharp, shooting pain in her ankle.

“AGHHH!”

Her vision went briefly white as she hurriedly pulled the injured leg out from beneath her, cradling it delicately between her palms. Eyes tightly shut and leaking tears, she grit her teeth against the searing ache, feeling her stomach turn in response to the pain. She had barely repositioned herself comfortably at the base of the ladder when she felt the force of the coup de burst push her against the rungs, briefly stealing her breath. The laughter of her crew above followed quickly after, echoing down the chute and signaling their escape from the storm’s clutches. She had that to be thankful for at least.

After a minute, as the ship began to slow, she let out a slow, shaky breath and turned her head up, eyes still leaking pained tears. Now she just needed one of those idiots to carry her to the infirmary.

“Oi! Luffy!” she shouted up the chute, voice pitchy with pain. “Get your rubber ass down here and give me a hand!”

“What did you do?”

Law stared down at the swollen mass that was now her ankle with an amused, if dumbfounded, expression, Chopper’s ice pack resting beside her calf atop the infirmary bed. They had managed to find an island nearby with a protected cove at which to make repairs; and it was good, too, as the ship had gotten quite a good trouncing in the storm. Or perhaps it had been their abysmal reaction time. Either way, they had a ship to fix.

And a navigator too, apparently.

Nami grit her teeth as Law gently turned her ankle to examine it, still a bit tender as the local anesthetic had yet to take full effect. A broken tibia was Chopper’s diagnosis—and quite bad, too. No sooner had they had docked than Chopper hailed down Law in his sub who, according to the tiny doctor, was far better equipped to mend such a break with his ope ope no mi than he was with only his hands. Er, hooves.

“I slipped and fell down the ladder in the energy room,” she ground out, attempting not to flinch at the gentle pressure of his fingers.

Law released her ankle, turning to her with a raised brow. “You know you really should have been more careful going up a wet ladder while drunk,” he commented mildly.

She glared at him, eyes narrowed and expression distinctly unamused. “Shut it, Doctor spots. Can you fix it or not?”

He repressed a bemused smirk as he stood, crossing his arms as he eyed her ankle thoughtfully, then turned to Chopper.

“Bring her to my operating room on the sub—I can reset the bone and mend the damage to the surrounding tissue, but it will require surgery. It shouldn’t take too long, but even if I speed up the healing process, the recovery will still be almost a week—and she’ll need to be careful for another month after that. We can go over follow-up care once I’m done.”

“Oh, good!” Chopper breathed a sigh of relief, tense shoulders relaxing. “Thank you so much!”

But Nami’s ears were still ringing with the word ‘surgery’. A wave of anxiety washed over her, momentary visions of an old memory—of bloody scalpels and chunks of flesh littering a concrete floor flashed through her mind; but just as quickly as they came she shut them out, closing her eyes and gritting her teeth until the images ceased their assault. As she opened them she forced the anxiety down, allowing the much more manageable emotion of anger to take its place. Grinding her teeth, she turned towards the open door, shouting with renewed irritation for the closest thing she had to a punching bag.

“Where is that rubber idiot?! I am going to give him such a beating!!”

Chopper, in heavy point, carried Nami onto Law’s sub, down an elevator and into the operating theater where he placed her gently onto the operating table. Once she was situated, Chopper wished her a speedy recovery and departed to tend to the rest of the crew’s numerous scrapes and bruises.

Law busied himself preparing additional anesthesia for injection, as well as pulling out the needed equipment. Nami eyed him warily as he worked, placing scalpels, cotton pads, and other supplies upon a metal tray.

Finally ready to begin he turned, activating his room to encompass the bed—only to notice his patient gripping the sheets beneath her in a white knuckled grip, her eyes periodically darting anxiously towards his tray despite the otherwise cool expression of her features. He paused before reaching for his scalpel, eying her thoughtfully. After the roughness of Punk Hazard and Dressrosa, he wouldn’t have thought she’d suffer from something like medical anxiety.

“The surgery shouldn’t take more than an hour,” he said carefully as he pulled the tray towards him, situating himself near the foot of the operating table. “You can stay conscious while I operate, or I can sedate you, if you’d prefer. You won’t feel anything either way.”

“Sedation,” she said without hesitation.

He nodded, reaching for a mask draped atop a metal canister beside the bed. As he approached, he noticed that her posture had not relaxed, and she eyed the mask apprehensively. Drawing upon his patience, he gently pushed her down flat onto the bed.

“It’ll  be over before you know it.”

She closed her eyes, fingers clenching and un-clenching as she took a calming breath, and Law seized the opportunity. Quickly raising his arm, he gently pressed the mask against her face and activated the flow of gas. Her eyes flew open and she attempted to sit up again; but his hand on her shoulder was steady, and though he was briefly subjected to her signature glare, her gaze quickly became unfocused and her eyelids fluttered shut.

Finally, he could begin.

The surgery went smoothly. Her fracture was, as he anticipated, quite bad, and the surrounding tissue severely irritated. Thankfully, though, it had suffered little actual damage. Copious evidence of a previous fracture in the same location suggested that to be the reason for the severity of the break; the bone structure was already quite weak.

In total it took no more than an hour, and by the time the sedative was due to wear off, he had finished the surgery and already started a healing acceleration treatment.

The sound of her groggy voice alerted him to her wakefulness, words faintly slurred.

“Mmmm… ’s nice,” she mumbled.

He lifted his head, glowing palm unmoving from its location atop her ankle. He’d been told by his patients before that the treatment felt vaguely like warm water gently flowing through the affected area—it seemed Nami agreed. Slowly, her eyelids struggled open and amber eyes turned to gaze blearily at him. He could tell from the slightly vacant look on her face that, though wakeful, the sedative was keeping her higher faculties from emerging.

She blinked slowly, repeatedly, gazing at him with her head cocked against the pillow in confusion, “Wha… Hi—hi Torao. Hi. Whas… whas’re you doin’?” she glanced from his face to where his hand rested atop her ankle, then back to his face, expression full of childlike curiosity.

“Healing your ankle,” he answered noncommittally.

She blinked at him, then shifted slightly on the operating table before her eyes widened and she attempted to sit up on her elbows

“Where did you put my foot?” She asked urgently.

Law repressed a snort. While the sedative had worn off enough for her to wake, the local anesthetic may not have, and it was likely sensation from the mid-calf down was, at the least, muted.

“Your foot is securely attached to your leg, Nami-ya. As you can see.” He gestured with his free hand towards the ankle he was working on. She followed his hand with her eyes, but didn’t look convinced.

“But I can’t feel it. You must have taken it off.”

“You can’t feel it because I numbed your ankle for the surgery. Your foot is still attached,” he reasserted firmly, if with a hint of annoyance.

She narrowed her eyes as she examined his face closely. “And what’d I need surgery for, hm? HM?”

He glanced up, feeling his eyebrow twitch with growing irritation as he answered, “Because you broke your ankle.”

At his words her eyes widened, and she nodded with sudden clarity. “Oh—OH! I broke my ankle!” Then, more softly, “I broke my ankle…”

He rolled his eyes, adjusting his hand with a quiet sigh. He never was a fan of dealing with sedative-induced delirium. He had hoped he might be done before she woke expressly so that he could avoid this, but luck was not on his side.

For several minutes she seemed content to watch him work, lying back against her pillow silently as she stared down at him. Then, suddenly, she grinned, sitting up on her elbows again as her gaze rose to his face with childlike enthusiasm.

“Hey—hey Torao… ask me if I’m orange.”

Law’s eyes rose to meet hers, and he felt that twitch in his brow return.

“No.”

She immediately frowned, looking thoroughly put out. “Oh, come on! Ask me! Pleeeeease?”

He sighed, drawing on his patience. He was almost done, he reminded himself—almost done.

“Are you orange, Nami-ya?”

She continued to smile at him, biting her lower lip to withhold her glee, before finally blurting out, “No!” and dissolving into giggles.

He stared at her flatly as her chest heaved with her laughter, feeling a distinct desire to put her under again. Thankfully it seemed her poor attempt at humor had, for the moment, satisfied her; for as her laughter died down she simply settled more comfortably on her elbows, eyes curiously watching his glowing hand slowly, carefully tracking over her ankle.

He was rewarded with another few moments of peace, before she broke the silence again.

“What’re you doing?”

He momentarily shut his eyes before forcing out an answer. “I’m healing your ankle. Like I told you.”

She frowned slightly, clarifying her question. “No, I mean… aspif—epsific—specifically.”

“I’m accelerating your body’s natural healing process by increasing blood flow and feeding your cells mitochondrial energy.”

He had hoped the specificity of his answer would disinterest her from further query; but no. Of course not. Instead, she raised her thoughtful gaze up to his face, blinking rapidly as she inquired further.

“How d’you do that?”

“By feeding you some of my life force,” he answered noncommittally, readjusting himself on his stool.

Her eyes narrowed suspiciously, expression becoming sharp despite the bleariness still coloring her expression. “Is… that doesn’ seem like it would be very good for you.”

He shrugged. “By the time I’m done with your treatments, it will probably have taken a few days off my lifespan.”

With unexpected speed and strength she pulled herself upright and yanked his hand off her ankle, expression horrified.

“No!!”

He eyed her with a furrowed brow, crossing his arms over his chest in distinct irritation. “No?” he echoed incredulously, “You were the one who complained about the recovery time.”

She shifted in the bed, moving her arms to support her weight on her hands as she started to sway. The sudden move had clearly been an effort. “I was… I was just mad ‘cuz I didn’t want to have surgery! Don’t waste your life like that! You can’t!”

Once more Law rolled his eyes, moving his hand back to her ankle and re-activating the acceleration. “It’s just a few days, Nami-ya. I lost years on Doflamingo.”

Again she surprised him with her strength as she leaned forward in an attempt to shove his hand away—but this time he wouldn’t be deterred. He grabbed her with his free hand by the wrist to hold her at bay; but she just reached for him with her other hand to pull him off her ankle—and before he could understand how exactly it had happened, they were engaged in slap fight, with Nami managing to muster a shocking amount of speed and strength.

But that strength didn’t last long. Her precision and speed quickly faded and she began to sway in her upright position. Taking advantage, he grabbed both of her wrists, holding them away and her upright, exasperated and irritated in equal measure.

“Nami-ya!” he commanded sharply, “Would you stop.”

“No!” she asserted stubbornly, weakly struggling against his grip. “You just got your life back, and at a huge cost—I won’t let you be so quick to waste it—especially on me!”

That was… not an answer he was expecting. His surprise caused his grip to slacken and she used the opportunity to slip free of him, settling her arms across her chest with a frown. His eyes moved to meet with hers, and though her gaze was still a bit hazy, they were nonetheless resolute. His brow furrowed and he frowned, thinking. He had not anticipated she would be upset about this, nor that she would seem to carry such… strong opinions, as to how he spent his life force.

“This is the nature of the Ope Ope no Mi, Nami-ya,” he said carefully, “Certain abilities feed on the user—that’s just how it works.”

He allowed a moment for his words to sink in before placing his hand back on her ankle, re-activating the acceleration; and when she weakly reached to try and remove it again he grabbed her wrist with his free hand, eying her sharply.

“It’s a worthwhile use of my abilities, and a relatively small sacrifice I’m willing to make,” he said with finality, the glow under his palm igniting again. “If there is anyone between our two crews we need able-bodied, the navigators are at the top of that list. Stop fighting me or I’ll put you under again.”

She frowned at him, and as he released her wrist she thankfully settled back against the pillow instead of making for his hand again. She let out a frustrated breath, closing her eyes. Her posture seemed weary—the energy expended fighting him off had clearly taken it out of her. She remained still and silent for some time, and Law used that opportunity to examine his progress. The swelling had gone down significantly, and he could now feel the bone beneath her skin, smoother now at the break site as the bone began to knit neatly back together.

“Luffy said you made a room so large on Dressrosa he couldn’t even see it,” she said quietly, breaking the stillness. “Is that what cost years of your life?”

He raised his head, seeing her sitting up on her arms again as she eyed him.

“Mugiwara-ya didn’t regale you with the details?” he commented lightly before returning to his examination. She frowned.

“He’s not a complete idiot, you know. He does know when something’s personal and to keep his mouth shut. When I asked, he only told me the basics, and said I should ask you if I wanted to know the rest.”

Law turned to study her annoyed expression, surprised by her words—and Luffy’s. He had assumed that the whole of the battle would become common knowledge to Straw Hat’s crew, as much as he wouldn’t prefer it.

Pine came through as the tropical flavours faded and there was a huge bitterness at the end of the drink. A beautiful silky mouthfeel was created: full-bodied, with a modest carbonation observed. It ended slightly dry, meaning it didn’t take very long before I sampled it again… and again and again. The addition of American hops really made this brew tremendously fruity.

Rating: 4.25/5. “Mooie Nel” is a cracking IPA that I have a strong feeling is going to be featuring regularly at Dr Beer’s!

First, take the beer (preferably chilled) and prepare it for loading. If you have a detachable tubing system, insert that into the neck of the torp; if it’s already attached, carry on to the next step.  Instead of removing the front section as seen with the old design, the section on the top surface opens like a door. Once ajar, the two-litre torp can be inserted. Make sure the tubing is pointing towards yourself and lift-off the handle from the front section in order to insert the tube into the tap-head.
