Canon Couples and the Random Heights I Assigned Them

Just because I recently re-read this post and it's on my mind. Here's what I think these canon couples' final heights came to be and some justifications behind my thought process, as well as some headcanons. Let's start with my OTP -

Harry (6'1") and Ginny (5'0")

I'm kinda obsessed with the idea that 17yo Harry being the same height as his 21yo deceased father would grow just a couple more inches

Ginny being 5ft fits with her being the noticeably "smallest one" in the DoM during OOTP and with Harry being able to easily look over her head during the infamous First Kiss scene in HBP, putting her head at chest height of Harry (as of HBP)

Ginny is the only one who knows about Harry's petty satisfaction when he ran into Draco Malfoy some years after the war and realized he had continued to grow and Malfoy hadn't

James (5'11") and Lily (5'8")

Because they're both tall enough to be considered "tall", but not the kind of tall that is shocking

Lily being 5'8" makes her tall enough to have to look down at 14yo Harry in the graveyard scene of GOF

Ron (6'5") and Hermione (5'8")

In order for Fred and George to be "shorter and stockier" than 14yo Ron, but still slightly over 6ft so as to shrink to 5'11" in DH, I have to assume Ron's final height came to be one that most people would put in the "Holy shit you're tall" category

I know I'm going to get shouted at for Hermione's height, because she's never described as particularly tall in the books HOWEVER she's never described as particularly short either, just shorter than Harry

This 9 inch height difference give Ron & Hermione the perfect height difference for Ron to comfortably rest his chin on her head without having to hunch over awkwardly like Harry does with Ginny, so I'm sticking to it

Arthur (5'11") and Molly (4'11")

I know the movies made Arthur short and round, but he was described as thin in the books and all the Weasley boys wind up being pretty tall, so they had to get that from somewhere.

Molly is consistently described as short and dumpy throughout the series, and while Ginny is often compared to Molly physically, I just like the idea that Ginny managed to grow that extra inch that Molly never did.

Draco (6'0") and Astoria (5'11")

we know in DH Draco was slightly taller than Harry at the Malfoy Manor scene (p.457, U.S. edition of DH), so if we assume the like linked post above that Harry was 5'11" during DH, then I'd put Draco at 6 foot.

we literally know nothing about Astoria (CC doesn't count), but I picked 5'11" because it is the curse of all tall women to wind up with men roughly the same height

Lucius (5'10") and Narcissa (5'10")

we know Harry and Narcissa are the same height in HBP, so I put her at 5'10"

correct me if I'm wrong, but Lucius is never described as particularly tall, while Narcissa is. And of course, tall for a woman is average for a man. I put Lucius to be around around the same height as Narcissa because I just don't see Lucius' personality allowing him to be with a woman taller than himself.

How tall IS machete exactly?(with and without heels)

Hh this is really really tricky, I'm genuinely truly abysmal at perceiving and comparing the heights, weights and sizes of anything ever. I think he'd be around 6 feet / 180 cm without heels, and the heels are something like 3 to 4 inches / 8-10 cm on average? That's not counting the ears, which could add roughly 7 inches / 18 cm if fully perked up.

Since Vasco's boots have more moderate heels and they're still very equally matched, he would probably be closer to 6'3 / 190 cm with shoes on?

Don't take this as gospel, I'm twisting myself into knots trying to visualize this stuff. They're supposed to be big dogs, both above average height in their circles, but not so tall it would really catch your eye in a crowd.

It’s been a busy 2 weeks with the PT conference being tomorrow. I have 0 time for myself. There’s two places I’m always at, either at school teaching my students or at home grading and preparing student reports. The end of the 10 weeks is always a mess. At least I teach High School, and my kids are so good they help me with the stuff.

There’s always a few students from each class that volunteer to help organize and store papers and that has helped me for sure. Like whenever Nobara, Yuuji and Megumi from my 10th grade class stay after school every Tuesday to help me out. They really are the best and I 100% could not survive without them. Height Comparisons for the Wild Life Fan-Creators

So, that session 1 tho. Lotta height weirdness! And I can already tell this is gonna be hell for trying to determine where characters are in a space, so I did the math so y'all don't have to!

Of course there's definitely more than 1 way to do things, so if you don't like my math, don't use it! I'm also not a mathmatician so if my numbers are wrong pls let me know~

So where do we start?

Original heights, of course! Specifically, the original height of none other than Minecraft Steve himself.

Each minecraft block is a 1x1x1 meter cube, and Steve (and therefore all other cubitos) are exactly 2 blocks tall. This leaves Steve (and therefore the rest of the cubitos) at a default of about 6'5-6'6 feet tall.

Step 2 is where the shrinkage comes in. We know from the Sub One Crew that the smallest height possible is half a block, so 50 centimeters. The largest height possible, from what I can gather, is 6 blocks, so 6 meters, leaving a height range from 1'6-19'7 feet.

But, we can also go a little further~

With the way characters move and the fact that none of the characters really did proper experimental testing, it's hard to say how much height exactly is added per jump or per crouch.

So, I figured it'd be easier to just call it one pixel per jump or per crouch. (Crouching in reality is a bit more complicated because you can hold it down, but for the sake of easy math I'm just going to count the crouches the same as the jumps.)

Each minecraft block has a 16x16 grid of pixels on each side. If each jump adds a pixel and each crouch removes one, then that would be adding/losing 6.25 cm per jump/crouch, or roughly 2.46 inches. So... Not that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.

This does mean, by these calculations, that getting from normal height to the minimum would take 24 crouches, and getting from normal height to the maximum would take about 64 jumps. And therefore, getting from max to min or min to max would be 88 crouches or jumps depending on which direction you're going in.

Hopefully this helps put things a little bit into perspective when it comes to these cubitos and their height weirdness!

HDG xenospecies reference doc: the Maelodions

This is a first draft of a little world building reference doc I put together for one of the xeno species I made up. They primarily appear in Good Sensory and Surrogate Bloom.

The Maelodions are 3 foot tall musically inclined fruit xenos with six bifurcated limbs from the galaxy Andromeda. They use their affinity for signals and frequencies for many creative and scientific pursuits, as well as no small amount of utilizing their highly polyphonic songs to hypnotize other xenosophonts for fun.

Home Planet: No agreed upon Terran translation, most common is "Harmony"

Native Gravity: .4g

Year Length: about 8 Terran years

Lifespan: The original lifespan of a Maelodion was only a single season, under the efforts of the compact this has been extended by hundreds of times, going through many repeated regrowth cycles, similar to reblooming, but they do eventually degrade and die. No Maelodion has ever lived a full millennium without becoming digitized.

Domesticated: first encountered the affini roughly 19,000 years before Terran Domestication, took an unusually long time to fully Domesticate.

Names: Maelodion names are snippets of melody, with too high a level of frequency precision to be decipherable to most other xenos. They adopt new names when interfacing with other cultures, almost always based on historically famous musicians, instruments, or musical theory terms. Motzart, Cadence, Beyonce, Dorian, Viola, and Harmony might all be names a Maelodion in Terran space would adopt.

Physiology

The Maelodions are about 3 feet tall, with a slightly gourdlike central body, two sets of photoreceptive eyespots, a cluster of leaf like fibers at their base and top, and six flexible limbs. Their central body varies in texture between individuals, from feeling smooth and waxy like a watermelon to fuzzy like a peach. They can be any color

They are sentient motile fruiting bodies that originate from non-sophont trees, and before the intervention of the Affini, they only lived a single season (about six earth years) but now may live many hundreds of years. Their honeworld had seasons that would bathe entire regions of the planet in snow and scorching heat that required even autotrophic organisms with chlorophyll to be capable of migration.

They have six vine-like limbs that extend from their base, and bifurcate three times to end in 24 small manipulators, each time one third a long the new segments’s length. the final pairs are about the length of human fingers, but can become thinner and stretch out to be about 6 inches long.

The species has no sexes but does use sexual reproduction, being hermaphroditic. Their sexual mechanisms involve their bifurcated feelers, so putting them inside of other sophonts is pleasurable to them. This mechanism is also a form of intimate communication, and Terrans not taking broad spectrum blockers are particularly easily hypnotized by the songs of a Maelodion if it is possible to conduct sound through their skull directly somehow. This is accomplished using the application of what grants the Maelodions their sentience, what is inside the body of every Maelodion, their Song.

The Song is a recursive self modifying harmony that exists inside the hollow resonant body of a Maelodion. It is highly polyphonic and complex, and to the Terran ear would sound like warbling white static.

Each member of the species carries a significant fraction of the Song, but how each interprets it varies between individuals. When in physical contact with each other's limbs, Maelodion can exchange verses of their Song, which allows for incredibly rapid transfer of information and knowledge.

Culture as of Terran Domestication 

Maelodions in Terran space will lean towards societal roles that involve interacting with sequences of information in some way. The obvious role is musician, such as Mx. O’Lydian and the Accidentals in Irregular Orbits, but coding, mathematics, physics, writing, chemistry, and many other things fit within this definition. They do not see these pursuits as being fundamentally different from music, or more broadly as an expression of Song. 

They tend to be strong language prosessors and usually have a good sense of humor, especially about being mistaken for affini. They are quick to debate, and tend to be very opinionated on seemingly inconsequential subjective matters.

Maelodions can communicate via sound in any language they care to learn, having specialized organs that operate like computer speakers and can produce entirely arbitrary sound waves.

Maelodion languages are polyphonic songs that sound like a mix of chimes, synths and whistles. Terrans can mimic simple phrases by whistling, but would need specialized mods to perceive the level of complexity of unsimplified communication. For reference, while the most fommon Terran musical octave contains 12 tones, the most common Maelodion octave is broken into 2520 distinct frequencies. Major Source: Surrogate Bloom

Some independent Terrans choose to set their hab AIs to the Maelodion language because they can simply memorize the melodic chirping tunes and not have to be condescended to in a language they actually recognize, feeling more computer-like. Pre-Contact

Before making initial contact with the compact, the Maelodion Chorus was anything but harmonious. Individual lifespans of the species are extremely short, and their seasonal life cycle was such that the entire race would die during winter, leaving only the record of their Song in their nonsentient tree form for the spring. Even after they escaped this limitation, the notion that art and legacy was more important than individual lives was deeply ingrained in their way of thinking.

As the Maelodions spread, various groups within it drifted, creating the first Choirs- a subgroup whose Song has diverged far enough they considered those outside it heretical and dissonant. Massively destructive wars over differences of opinion over classic artistic works broke out during this period. While the Maelodions never developed capitalism or private property, conflicts over subjective disagreement and ‘disharmony’ between Choirs frequently escalated to the level of using weapons of mass destruction on each other.

This was a self perpetuating cycle, and much of their cultural works eventually became about th process of debating the meaning of art between Choirs. This took less destructive forms, as well, with many ritual dances where two Maelodion would dance to a previous classic and debate ideas through motion.

Due to their extremely native understanding of signals, functions, and frequencies, the Maelodions are extremely gifted in the fields of mathematics and physics, and they had already gained an understanding of the fifth fundamental force before leaving their own star system, and devastating hypermetric weapon use was commonplace both against each other and against the affini once the Compact discovered them. Domestication

The Maelodion Chorus was a particularly tricky civilization to domesticate. The initial war period was longer than most, taking over 40 years to pacify a region comparable in size to the Terran Accord. The Maelodions were highly technologically advanced, extremely conflict-happy, and generally did not value individual lives due to how short their life cycle is, making them an extremely tricky puzzle to pacify without massive casualties. This was further complicated by incomplete assumptions made during the Maelodion cotyledon program. An individual member of the species was relatively easily tamed, but the song/chorus of their collective was far more resistant. 

While mass conflict ended in less than fifty years, the Song that each Maelodion carries within them was a far trickier beast. Since the Song itself was as their sentience, it could not just be replaced from scratch. A single feralist sequence could rapidly transmit through large groups.

This required a Domestication approach that involved heavy information control to prevent old feralist ‘melodies’ from rejoining the population, and outbursts of small feralist Choirs continued for centuries.

Some Affini do not think that the level of cultural rewrite that occured was beneficial for the Maelodions, and mourn the old Song, but they are rare. Hi Fable, I wanted to ask a question about how you deal with drawing things to scale? My assumption is that as you draw more and more, you get better at just going with your instincts, but I was wondering if you have certain strategies to make sure the things you're drawing aren't out of scale?

Another related question: How do you go about making sure animations are drawn to the same scale consistently? (I'm not 100% sure how to phrase this second question. Hopefully, it makes sense!)

If you mean drawing characters on model, practice. Tracing models and practicing drawing stuff from life to train my eye. Noticing the differences between what I drew and real life and telling myself to pay more attention to those aspects next round.

If you mean scale like drawing a character beside a car and not having it look weird, then reference. Also logic. If the character can't physically sit in the vehicle without looking comic, then it's probably not the right size. If it doesn't look like they can use anything in the environment, then think more carefully about yourself in your environment. And note how the size of things is meant to accommodate the average person's height.

I'm very short, so that part sucks! Everything is huge to me. But I usually draw people who are taller than me, so they don't have that issue. Lucky them :3

If you mean drawing characters proportionally, then use body parts to reference their scale. Humans for example have skulls that are all roughly the same size no matter their height. There's some variation, but only at the extremes will you find a difference of say, an inch or two. Cuz our brains aren't that different in size. And the variation is usually just in jaw size more than the rest of the skull. Hormone differences also contribute to this, but again it's not really that extreme relative to say, dogs.

So if your characters look weirdly out of proportion to each other, then make sure their head sizes aren't too out of whack. That's probably why one looks like a baby and the other looks like a CLAMP character.

If they're getting wildly out of scale in every drawing, note how many heads tall the character is. IRL, humans are about 6 to 8 heads tall (or less, if you're me! And then all your characters look short cuz you kept referencing yourself in the mirror)

Hi! I just saw your video of polaris and i don't know how i never realized just how LONG their tails can get. Is there any significant difference in being (or owning) a peacock because of the tail size? Do they need more space or different roosting setups? Obvs they're big birds anyway but damn that tail is like 2x the length of his body.

Polaris is actually just a 3yo, so his train (which isn't actually his tail! He has a real tail under the train) isn't as long as it will get by the time he's 6 (fully mature).

A fully mature peacock needs a flight pen which has no side shorter than 12 feet, because his train display is around 10 feet wide. They also need it to be 8 feet tall, as the train will stand roughly 5 feet tall while they display, and they need at least 1 perch that's 5-6 feet off the ground in order to preen it, which means 2-3 feet clearance above that to get up and down. Their roost should also be 5+ feet off the ground. Because of their weight, they also need 3-5 feet of horizontal space per vertical foot of space, to get down without slipping a tendon (a death sentence) or jamming their feet (leading to bumblefoot). This is why you'll often see long, thin enclosures at breeding farms (12x50' is a nice size, I've seen 15x50 as well). Inside a coop, if you cannot give them that much space to get down, they will gladly use a ramp to walk down from the roost (and often walk up it to roost too, they're quite lazy birds).

Their MINIMUM flight pen space (not including coop space) is 500 square feet. Their maximum housing density is 1 bird per 150 square feet, which raises the minimum total space needed if there are more than 3 birds. It's usually advised that if you CAN give them more space than that, you SHOULD, because they will use every inch of it and it will be a more enjoyable experience for you and for them. While they need space for their trains, they also get stressed if you force interaction or if they feel they cannot get far enough away from you. However, if you give them the space to get away from you, they will be up your butt any time you're doing something in their space, including sitting minding your own business. They're very curious.

They are definitely a bird that prospective owners should plan for well in advance. On top of their considerably larger housing needs they have a lot of other needs that differ greatly from chickens, largely in dietary needs but also in social and behavioral needs. One of the biggest misunderstandings that lands both humans and peacocks in hot water is that people think the males will be like chickens or ducks or even turkeys, where hand raising and cuddling a male will make them friendly. It is the extreme opposite. Coddling a male peachick will result in 15-20 years of constantly being hunted by a flying velociraptor with knives attached to his ankles. In the peafowl community it is known as berserker male syndrome and it's a constant uphill battle to educate new owners to cut that shit out.

So yeah. Fantastic birds, love them with my whole heart. Do not impulse buy them.

So about a year ago I did a little math and some rambling at a friend on how long before the events of PLA Prof. Laventon arrives in Hisui and I thought it’d be pretty funny to share it w some revisions here 🎉

The tree in Laventon’s lab is about like 6 rowlet tall minus roots

Rowlet is about 1 foot tall, making his tree around 6 feet tall.

Now take note of the size of the doors to Laventon’s lab in comparison to the tree

No way he brought that thing in recently. It’s waaayy too big to fit thru those doors. As the doors are around 6’8 because they are able to fit Volo (who is canonically 190 cm ((6’3)))thru those doors without him hitting his head. (and 6’8 is like the size of a standard door)

Now assuming this tree is growing at a moderate pace (19 inches per year) it would be about 4’5 a year before PLA. And the average man in the 1920s (will make a separate post for why I believe the game takes place then) is 5’6. So the tree might be slightly too big to carry thru a door so give it like 3 more months (4.75 less inches) when it’ll be roughly 4 feet and half an inch and then you can carry it thru that door pretty comfortably.

in conclusion:

Laventon gets to Hisui about a year and 3 months before the protagonist falls out of the sky 👍

Fun fact: Hajime’s height in Japanese is 179 cm and in feet, 5’10.

Meaning that not only Mikan and Hajime would be the same height, but Hajime’s the tallest of the DR protagonists! Makoto (160 cm, aka 5’2), Komaru (163 cm, 5’4), Kaede (167 cm, 5’5) and Shuichi (171 cm, 5’7). RIP Makoto.

ok hold on hold on imma use this as an excuse to rant about cm to feet because when I started simping for Nagi and found out he was 180cm and everyone kept saying he's 5'11'' but when I converted it it came out to 5'9" I went down a rabbit hole of trying to get to the truth and found that EVERYONE IS LYING IT'S ALL A FUCKING LIE

I've used so many different converters online and it seems the most consistent number for 179 to feet is 5.87 which would translate either to 5'8"or 5'9" if you're feeling generous. ok ok but THEN you get converters like THIS:

That says it somehow translates to 5'10"?? a whole ONE TO TWO INCHES MORE??? LIKE I GET ROUNDING IT TO 5'9" OK THAT MAKES SENSE BUT HOW THE FUCK DID YOU ADD AN ENTIRE INCH TO THAT?? BUT THEN IF YOU DIVIDE 70.4742 INCHES BY 12 INCHES IT'S STILL 5.87 FEET!

So then WHY does shit get weird with height around Hajime's and Nagito's??Well. I noticed something while trying to figure out Mikan's height since originally I had wanted to put her in CM since that seemed simplier but I couldn't gauge how much two more inches would be in CM thus I went back to the converters to convert once again from cm to feet (mistake).

Well interesting enough, when I put Mikan to 182 cm google converts it to 5.97feet:

which should be about an inch more than Hajime who's at 5.87 yeah? Then it implies that every inch is roughly 3 cm which google confirms as well:

ok ok the logic then would be that if I want Mikan to be TWO inches taller than Hajime then she'd need to be at least 185cm as 179cm+6cm = 185cm which should translate to around 5.8 feet + 2 inches = 5.10 feet

BUT THEN!!!!

if you put 185cm into google you get:

SIX FUCKING WHOLE FEET!!!!!!!!!

WE WENT FROM 5'9" TO 6' A WHOLE THREE INCHES

Here's the deal alright. Because 3cm is actually a bit more than an inch (1.18 inches), those extra inches start adding up and can add ALMOST an inch which is why we can get those sudden jumps. I acknowledge this and accept this as fact.

But I will NOT accept Hajime nor Nagito being 5'10" or 5'11" because really they're approx 5.872feet and 5.905feet and even if we're being kind and rounding up then really they'd be 5'9" and 5'10" on a good day. Though really Nagito should still be 5'9" because im sorry honey you juuuust made it to 5.9 and you're only 1cm taller than Hajime not 3cm not even 2cm. Hajime and Nagito have little to no height difference.

So thus, 5'10" Mikan would still, in fact, be taller than Hajime AND Nagito. Now, all that being said, what would Mikan's height be in cm? Well, for simplicity's sake we'll say she's 182.

TLDR: Converting metric that is based on the powers of 10s with the Imperial system based on the division of 3s, 12s, and whatever the fuck you feel like that day messes everything up and gives you wildly different perceptions of height and everyone is simultaneously correct but also wrong and Byakuya is 6 foot tall fuck you he's doesn't get to round up he has enough height already he needs to learn to share and be humbled. I don't know if it's just me being too ignorant about how Tumblr works, or if you haven't written about it. But I was curious about the height of the RO's.

I love the fact we can be taller than every single RO (not all IF have this, even if they include height customization, and I love the idea of towering MC's a lot). Yet, I'm confronted with the doubt about the actual size ranges. For all I know, the difference between L and J could be like 6 inches or less.

But I also understand you probably have not said any specific measurements to leave it to the player to decide internally. Which is commendable. Yet my desire for precision persist.

Also, do the heights change based on gender? Like, a male J would be taller than a female J?

I'm also curious what would be, theorically, the minimal and maximum height ranges available for MC. Because sure, we can be shorter than L. But how short is L? And sure, we can be taller than J... But how tall is J?

Feel free to decline to answer, of course, I understand if you decided not to disclose this information. Is, after all, not truly important. Is more that I enjoy knowing the numbers, even though I have not real benefit from knowing.

But in general, the height differences are roughly by half a head.

Something like this (including MC as blue and green):

Purple (tallest RO) > J

Red (shorter than J, taller than L RO) - A

Yellow (shortest RO) > L

Fun fact: I imagine Leo to be closest to Tom Holland's body type 🤓

But really, it can be further than that if you want. Their heads will most likely still have to bend a lot to look at MC (if taller or shorter) when I write the scenes 🤪

The heights don't really change in their gender counterparts, unless you imagine them to.

Now, I’m not sure how tall Casey Jr is, he’s roughly Leo’s height, maybe a tad inches taller. But Future Leo was roughly a third taller than him. Leading to F!Leo possibly being around 7 feet tall. By this logic. F! Would be about the same height. F! Mikey would be 6 feet. And Future Raph would be around 8 feet. But Raph’s also an alligator snapping turtle and they grow SIGNIFICANTLY bigger than the other turtle species. Like average ninpo form of a scale difference. So that’s an easy 14 feet tall, but 20 to 25 or more would still be valid heights. But I think 50 feet before ninpo would be the max possibility. But if you’re writing that you might want to give him shrinking powers…

Species: "testudinidae carolina", which is not a real species. Testudinidae is a tortoise family. Might be terrapene carolina, aka common box turtles.

In the Fast Forward arc I heard they’re this height.
