Okay okay so it makes perfect sense why that devil fruit would choose Luffy out of anyone else in the world because 1) he's just some goofy guy & 2) his will is absolutely indomitable. like if he wills it it's going to happen. Loss isn't even a consideration let alone a factor because he simply will become king of the pirates. While Luffy isn't some altruistic figure he does care about people especially if those people are experiencing suffering, case in point wano. it was always about beating kiado, it just also happened that the samurai had aligned interests & meeting otama, her circumstances, the overall circumstances of wano + learning about their mutual connection to ace just solidified the resolve to destroy kiado, not only because he was a monster but as a secondary motivation. kaido was never not going to be beaten, simply because that was never an option.

I think that's also a part of why ppl are drawn to Luffy specifically, he's not masquerading his intentions. There's an agenda, but it's not hidden or done via shady means he shouts it to anyone who will listen. I also love how absolutely fucking terrifying his df actually is like ur telling me this guy can not only manipulate his environment because it functions as an extension of himself, but also manipulate his opponent as well? (Seemingly, if the effects on kiados body during the fight aren't just exaggerated for the viewer) of course they wanted to hide the fruit it's fucking busted, not only that but the historic secretiveness/denial of "liberation" figures both in media & irl is soooo fitting for the op world. someone that powerful who inspires a level of trust and admiration that Luffy does is beyond threatening to a government system but especially one as fucked up & exploitative as the celestial dragons/world government.

Also the ppl bitching the animation was too goofy or silly on gear five are haters that cannot experience childlike whimsy or fun. It's a perfect contrast to how serious & dark the color palette has been through all of that fight & most of wano in general. Plus ur missing the point. like I said luffys just some goofy ass guy, it makes perfect sense for gear five to be mega silly + it honestly makes it more intimidating. ur fighting a guy that's giggling and bouncing around the whole time he's beating ur ass? insanity.

This page means so much after the past few chapters. We know why Im seems so fixated on Vivi, she’s a descendant of the original D. The only other thing I’m confused about is Blackbeard. Like yeah he’s a D and an emperor but like I feel in me bones that there’s more to it.

so as I see here and as people are pointing out, there's some very blatant "errors" here on this last double page, and between this, the absinthe malarkey and the false lion, I think we can assume this arc will feature illusions and such quite heavily, which apparently feature in Norse myth, especially with the infamous Loki. Like I reckon that, yes Luffy's weapon changing from sword to axe on the same double page spread is very deliberate, and a hint at what's to come lads. It's been a minute since I've been acquainted with Nordic tales but I'm excited!

And unless Viz is posting illusions of its own, we have another chapter next week? Until next Sunday I'll assume that actually is an error lmao, let's not let Oda push himself please.

I’m still stunned about this week’s revelation... I think we all knew Luffy is Joyboy/Nika but how; that’s something no one predicted. I love that Luffy is Nika cuz he’s the first one to awaken the Gomu-gomu-no-mi’s power in flipping 800 years. He worked so damn hard to get to this point. And ofc, he himself doesn’t know what it means so he calls his awakened mode Gear 5th, heh. He said his heartbeat sounds funny which I assume is what makes the sound of the drums of liberation. I also think it’s kinda fascinating that Kaido apologized for what the cp0 guy did to their fight. Like, yeah Kaido is a selfish monster but he has at least some code of honor, too. Oh and he’s been looking for Joyboy himself, or rather trying to be Joyboy. I wonder, if when he finds that Luffy is Joyboy he will want to be friends with him. Seems ridiculous to think about now but they could technically become allies - after Luffy shatters his beliefs. I would lastly like to disapprovingly shake my head at anyone who doubted Oda-sensei for the last two weeks lol.

but like in all seriousness, oda uses buggy to delegitimize certain positions. like,, after buggy became a warlord, the warlord system was dissolved. i think the same thing is gonna happen here and soon the title of emperor will be meaningless.

overall, i don’t think wano is fully over, since we still haven’t done anything about the road poneglyph or pluton. we’ll probably have a little more time on wano in the next chapter after the month-long hiatus before moving on to the next arc in order to get all that resolved.

(I hope it's fun!) So, you have the option to sit down with any fictional character from the LISA RPG series. Let's say you're a journalist in this AU. You're writing a profile piece on this character, so you get to completely pick their brain and understand their motives. Who do you pick and why? ✏️📄

What an EXCELLENT question!

I love that you specify ‘fictional’ character from the LISA series. As opposed to the real ones, like Harvey Alibastor, who came to me with a subpoena order the other day while I was walking my dogs by the river and who is very, very real.

It’s interesting, with writing ASAL I feel like I’ve been able to get into the heads of a lot of the characters, or give them depth in a way that makes sense to me. But one character who has eluded me and I would love to get to know better is none other than QUEEN ROGER!!

He’s just, so damn cool. As soon as I met him in my first play-through of LISA I was like ‘oh this guy’s the best.’ I love how to-the-point he is—I get the feeling he’d be one of the few guys in Brad’s gang to actually talk back to him and say whatever the group was thinking. He seems to actually have everything pretty together for an apocalypse survivor. He runs one of the most peaceful/successful places in Olathe, and the Bees working under him genuinely seem pretty at ease and free to be themselves. He feels like he’s both a good leader but also a peace keeper and quick to stop conflict, often by demonstrations of force first. But he’s only violent when provoked I think. I see him as a tough-love kinda guy, but not callous.

Something else that’s also always endeared me about him are his lines at the very end of the game:

These end-of-game lines are very much the measuring stick which informs my opinions on the different LISA companions (and it’s why I personally can’t STAND Garth. Woof.) Out of all of the other companions, who either plead for Brad to stop his rampage, say that Buddy belongs to the future of humanity, insult Brad and say they can’t wait to hurt him, or are open in their intentions of wanting Buddy for themselves—Roger is the only one who seems to be taking a step back and asking ‘now hang on—are any of us in the right here?’ And, if I may be so bold, might be hinting at a bit of empathy towards Buddy, something that not one, not ONE of the characters in Lisa the Painful (and I’d argue Joyful) do throughout any of the games (not even Rando! DX). Does Buddy even want to continue humanity? Is it ethical to force her into this role? Is ANYONE even contemplating what BUDDY wants? I think Roger might be. Just maybe.

This connects well to a post-Painful AU I thought about ages ago where after the dust settles, Roger finds Buddy and helps her out. He wouldn’t be the perfect caretaker (he is a Joy addict, and Buddy’s probably had enough of those :/ ), but I feel like as a gnc mlm man (who is a sex worker to boot) he would be a lot more empathetic to Buddy’s struggles and would have a nuanced understanding of the things she’s going through, like being under the constant sexual threat of men, as well as unpacking her un-adressed angst surrounding her identity as a woman and that even means, and autonomy over her body. 

As for the interview, I feel like he’d be very blunt, have very interesting stories from having lived an examined life. 

As someone who’s done classical voice and choir since I was a kid I’d very much like to hear his thoughts on singing and music, since his official backstory is that he used to be a lounge singer before the Flash.

I guess some stuff I’d ask would be about his life before the flash, where he was when the Flash happened, how he started the Beehive, his thoughts on Brad, his thoughts on Buddy, how he views Joy, what his relationship with Buzzo and the Joyboys are. There’s a lot to think about there.

Anyway, glad you’re enjoying the blog and ASAL! I’m excited for the next part to get uploaded as much as you are.
