No, please, just no. I mean I get it, what better way to spread the ideas of veganism than to spread incorrect information about a key ingredient on one of Americas favorite foods, THE ALMIGHTY PIZZA.
But you know if you used actual factual data, and correct images (cause that baby sure doesn’t look kidnapped to me), and not belittle or talk back to the people who reply to you, then maybe you could make a positive influence on someone.
1. Insemination practices on a dairy farm are safer for the female than natural insemination by a bull. The cow can be injured by the bull during mating, or even harassed and skip meals. Insemination and palpation of a pregnant cow takes minutes, and the cows are placed under less stress during the procedure. Also most insemination uses controlled genetics now, based on the body type of the female (wide hips, long or crooked tail, milk production) making sure that the calf has the highest genetic viability at birth compared to uncontrolled factors in a pasture.
2. Yes calves are usually removed within 24 hours. Most females will be raised for future dairy production, while most males will be used for Veal. Some will be sold to other farmers. Weaning calves however can cause injury to the mother, so farms where calves are left with the cows are fitted with special nose pieces to hasten the weaning process. 6. Estrogen in dairy. Yes there is estrogen hormones in dairy products. However this is one of those fear mongering topics, like the belief that too much yeast can make you ill or fat(unproven fact). There has been no scientific study that normal estrogen consumption of dairy products can cause cancer or early puberty or damages reproduction. In fact most estrogen consumed in dairy products is lower than what a human will produce in a days normal cycle. Unless you are chugging gallons of milk everyday for several months at a time will you possible see a difference, and at that point you will have other issues to worry about. Most hormones and drugs are destroyed in the digestion process anyways, so again there is little that escapes the stomach to be absorbed into the body. The higher the fat content of the milk fat, the higher the estrogen level, for example Vitamin D milk will have a higher level than 2% or Fat Free. The more a dairy product has been modified or aged the amount of estrogen it will contain. Aged cheeses, greater than 6 months, have little to no lactose or estrogen remaining.
7. As you age, you are naturally unable to process lactose as well as when you were a child. There is a huge difference between lactose intolerance and a milk allergy. As a child you will consume more lactose products as they are key nutrients to healthy growth. When you are a adult you consume less lactose and your body losses its natural ability to process it. Those that consume milk on daily basis are less likely to develop a lactose intolerance, although a intolerance can occur at any age during adulthood. Drinking a lactose free milk is a good option
8. There is no nutritional difference between Organic and regular milk. It literally is a industry ‘buzz-word’
9. Dairy does have a high fat content, although there are plenty of lean milk, cheese, and yogurt products available. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and watching your caloric intake is key.
I have nothing against well educated vegans, in fact it is those same WELL EDUCATED people that have made positive changes in the slaughter and raising of animals. But if you choose to eat meat than think about where your food comes from and how it was raised/slaughtered. Ethical treatment and humane slaughter are real and produce better tasting milk and meat. Look to your local farmer for beef and poultry. Or even better, cut out one animal based meal a week, and replace with a vegetarian option. It is better not only for the environment, but for you as well. Too much meat can make you unhealthy if you are not very active. The mass production of factory farms is also detrimental to our environment, so less demand on factory farms means a smaller overall impact.
I personally cannot eat Beef, and can’t handle dairy very well, so I kinda live off poultry and fish. But I make sure that I know where my food comes from and that things are being done correctly. It costs a bit more, but its some of the best tasting chicken I have ever had. Farmers markets are awesome too, local produce that is fresh and cheaper than big chain stores.
Do your research, animal or plant based lives, it is your decision. Make a educated decision.

Okay I'll make a post about my thoughts on vegetarianism, veganism and animal welfare..
Veganism is the most moral choices for average people. I say that as a vegetarian who isn't going vegan anytime soon..
There is no "ethical" way, that is without suffering, that we can mass produce animal products. When animals become a commodity after they die, then their living quality will always end up being reduced and they will suffer. It doesn't matter if you give the animals lots of space and land. Which isn't plausible with mass production anyway.
In my opinion, killing animals for food is always wrong WHEN you don't need to eat them to survive. But morality is not black and white. I think a small farmer who loves his cow, is so much more moral than the industry of factory farms. Hunting for food is more moral than going to the grocery store and buying factory farm meat. Eating animals that have died naturally, is probably the most moral way to consume meat.
Eggs and dairy are bad industries too, it's not just meat. The egg and dairy industry are tied to the meat industry anyway. The cows and chickens have reduced living quality and do suffer. "cage free" eggs are a lie, chickens are stuffed in rooms. Dairy cows are treated horribly. But I don't think dairy or eggs are immoral in the way raising and killing an animal for their meat is. Milking a cow doesn't hurt them. Taking unfertilized eggs does nothing to harm the chicken. But it can't be mass produced without suffering. Most average people can't keep chickens or have a cows..
Vegetarianism is still morally better than eating meat when you don't need to eat it and have the ability not to. Someone who only eats meat when they go out, still better than someone who eats it all the time. Someone who eats plant based most of the time, still better. But veganism is the best choice unless you can have your own chickens to lay eggs and a cow that can be milked (and you're not forcing pregnancy on them) and you only eat like roadkill or animals that have naturally passed.. or just don't eat animals at all ya know...
But this is all just talking about food. Non-food animals byproducts largely come as a result of the meat industry. Eliminating the big meat industry would greatly reduce other animal byproducts.
Of course there are some animal byproducts that I don't believe pose a moral issue on their own, like sheering wool from a sheep and using that wool. But of course, this can't be mass produced without causing suffering to the sheep and so unless you have a sheep who needs sheering...
With all that said. If someone needs to have animal products for some reason, doesn't have access to plant based diet or vegan lifestyle, they aren't acting immoral they are just living and surviving. It is also incredibly hard for most people to completely eliminate animal products that have caused suffering to animals, from their life because of how much of it exist without many people's knowledge. And nobody should pass judgement when they don't know the other person's life.
Veganism may be the more moral choice, at least in regards to the everyday person who does not have the ability to have sheep to sheer or chickens to collect eggs from. But, it is corporate, it is the system, the big meat industry who should be held responsible and be made to change. Perhaps more vegans in the world, less people consuming animal products, would accelerate that change but it is policy and law that needs to be changed.

Day 4
You know yesterday I bought some new milk from the fancy deli because the milk at home had mysteriously gone off? Well the milk from the fancy deli went off almost immediately as well! It would be a shock if I hadn’t predicted it would happen, because that’s what happens with the milk from the fancy deli. I think I’m going to have to officially boycott the milk from the fancy deli.
The person I live with noticed the milk had gone off when she was putting the three year-old we live with to bed last night. I was out at that awards do, so on the way home I had to pick up yet more milk. I got the last train home from London, which got back to Hove at almost 1am, so the only place open was the garage next to the station and I had to do that thing where you ask the garage person to go and get your stuff for you and they do it really resentfully. They only had green top as well, and we’re a blue top household, but I was in no position to complain. I do hate green top though.
Why is it ok to drink half-fat milk? I feel like it’s doubly insulting to the cow. “Look, we’ve imprisoned you and hooked you up to this machine to steal your milk, and then we’re going to take all the tasty stuff out of your milk and make it really boring. Yes, it is a bit weird isn’t it.”
Thanks to the quite large amount of wine I drank at them awards I have been feeling low-level rancid all day and having mad thoughts, apologies.
Anyway, last night I was furious about the milk being off and a bit drunk so when I got home I took it out on the contents of the fridge, which I had decided were to blame for making the milk go off. It’s weird how chucking some Stilton away made me feel better about the situation.
Today I trailed down to the big Sainsburys in East Grinstead at lunchtime to buy stuff for tea. Going to make some super boring pasta Bolognese thing, wasn’t much inspiration in Sainos. I did get some American-style measuring cups that were reduced to clear though, I’ve been meaning to get some for ages, now I can bake things from American recipes. Might make a cobbler. What even is a cobbler?
Took my suit back to the hire shop as well. The woman who served me yesterday was all “Did you win?” and I had to be all “Nah, but I had a nice time”. That’s true actually, I had some nice champagne and some lamb and talked to a man who commutes from the Lake District to London everyday. It’s £500 a day on the train but he doesn’t pay it. I couldn’t work out who did pay it.
The awards were presented by DJ/presenter Colin Murray, he was a better than average corporate awards show presenter. Corporate awards are really boring, something he compensated for by being super enthusiastic and swearing a lot, which worked well.
I’m writing this at work and am just about to set off and collect everyone and go home and make the pasta Bolognese for tea and fall asleep. Hopefully the milk will have survived, I’m not sure my brain can take any more milk spoilage.

Milk Isn’t Bad For You (But 6 Types of People May Want to Avoid It)
It used to be that few foods seemed as wholesome as a nice, cold glass of milk.
Your mom may have served milk with dinner or offered it at bedtime when you were feeling restless. You’ve seen your favorite celebs don milk mustaches as part of an iconic marketing campaign that’s spanned 20 years and appeared to solidify the idea that milk was not just healthy, but a necessity.
Turns out, it’s not.
“Any kind of natural food is not inherently bad; it’s eating patterns that can contribute to disease,” says Robin Foroutan, RDN, an integrative dietician at the Morrison Center in New York City and a spokesperson for the National Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
In other words, there’s little reason to think that any individual whole food on its own is going to ruin your diet. Milk isn’t dangerous. But milk also isn’t for everyone.
Here’s what you should know about who benefits most from milk, and who would be better off cutting back or going dairy-free.  
Just the Facts on Milk’s Nutrition
Milk—or, more specifically, cow’s milk—is indeed a good source of vitamins and minerals.
“Milk is a great source of protein, calcium, vitamin D, which are ‘nutrients of concern’ in the U.S. population,” meaning that many people don’t get enough, says Vasanti Malik, PhD, a research scientist in the department of nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “It also contains magnesium, along with other minerals and nutrients.”
“If you don’t consume dairy it’s really hard to get enough calcium,” which is crucial for strong bones, says Ali Webster, PhD, RD, Associate Director of Nutrition Communications for the International Food Information Council Foundation. The vitamin D and potassium in milk are also important for bone health.
Webster acknowledges that you can’t rely solely on milk to fight osteoporosis. You also need magnesium (milk has some but isn’t a great source) and vitamin K (found in leafy greens, fish, meat, and eggs)—but it does help you check off a lot of these boxes at once.
That said, milk isn’t the sole source of bone-supporting nutrients. A cup of spinach, for instance, has 350 mg calcium (slightly more than the 300 mg found in a cup of milk), and also provides fiber and folate. A 6-oz can of salmon with bones provides 380 mg of calcium, plus heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.  
How Much Milk Should You Drink?
If you do choose to consume dairy, Malik says that one serving a day is a good guideline. Ashley Koff, RDN, CEO of The Better Nutrition Program, agrees. She tells clients who opt to include dairy in their diets to “accessorize” meals with it—say, one slice of cheese on a sandwich or a splash of milk in your coffee.
That might surprise you, considering that the USDA recommends 3 servings daily. But Koff, Malik, and Foroutan say that number may be overkill. The only people who might need that much dairy are children and the elderly, because they tend to be picky eaters who might not otherwise get the nutrients they need.
Why You Shouldn’t Overdo It On Dairy
Assuming you like milk and aren’t allergic to it, most experts say it’s fine and arguably even healthy to continue drinking it—at least in moderation.
The reason why eating too much dairy isn’t advisable is because it can push other healthy foods (like fruits and vegetables) out of your diet.
Conversely, the opposite is true: When people cut milk out of their diet and find they feel better, it’s often not because milk was wreaking havoc on their bodies. It’s because their overall diet quality improves when they replace that dairy with more nutrient-dense produce and other whole foods.
Another thing to consider is that, unless you’re going with skim milk, the drink will contain saturated fat. While the effects of saturated fat are hotly debated, most health experts agree that increasing saturated fat consumption elevates cholesterol, which can in turn increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.
Milk Myths You Don’t Need to Worry About
Not all concerns about milk are created equal, at least from a scientific perspective. For example, rumors that consuming milk will mess with your hormones, or cause heart disease or diabetes are largely unfounded.
Most mainstream experts say that, with the exception of a possible increased risk of prostate cancer (more on that later), the quality of any evidence indicating that milk would be dangerous is pretty weak—think “associations” or “based on animal studies” rather than high-quality controlled trials.
Also, most studies purporting to show milk’s potential harms also need to be considered in the context of other contradictory research. For instance, a study published earlier this year in the British Journal of Nutrition found that eating full-fat dairy products increased the risk of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes—yet a 2016 study, published in the journal Circulation, found that eating full-fat dairy was associated with a lower diabetes risk.
But Does Milk Make You Fat?
If you’ve heard that milk will make you fat, that’s not proven, either.
“It’s true that milk comes from mammals and has a biological purpose—to feed infants so they can grow up and develop,” says Foroutan.
Milk naturally contains growth hormone as well as IGF-1 (insulin like growth factor-1) — both of which are designed to make animals get bigger. But there’s really no proof that the amount found in milk would contribute to obesity—nor is it enough to make you get jacked. (There is some proof that drinking milk after a workout can help you build muscle, mostly thanks to the protein content).  
Of course, if you eat ice cream everyday or put cheese on everything, you might very well gain weight. But if you eat dairy—even full-fat dairy—in small amounts, it might actually help you slim down. “Fat sends an important signal to the brain that you’re full, which can help with portion control,” says Foroutan.  
The 6 Good Reasons to Ditch Dairy
While research is always evolving, for now the preponderance of evidence points to dairy being beneficial (or at least not harmful) for most people, says Webster.
For instance, a 2016 review of meta-analyses on concluded that dairy consumption was associated with easier weight control, neutral or reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, lower risk of stroke, and higher bone mineral density (though it has not actually been proven to reduce fractures).  
That all sounds great, but of course it’s not the full story. The biggest issue is that each person’s body is unique.
While most people seem to be able to tolerate at least some dairy, “if you don’t break it down well or have some sensitivity to it, then consuming dairy products may trigger inflammation,” says Foroutan.
So if you’ve been thinking you might be better off going dairy free, or at least limiting it to an occasional treat, your hunch might be correct if you fall into one of the following categories:
1. You’re lactose intolerant.
A true dairy allergy is relatively rare, but many people are lactose intolerant—meaning that they can’t properly digest the primary sugar (lactose) found in milk. As a result, eating anything with lactose triggers unpleasant GI symptoms like cramps, gas, or diarrhea.
“It’s easy to detect, because you’d have a pretty quick response to eating or drinking something with lactose in it,” says Foroutan. If you’d like a more official diagnosis, ask your doctor for a lactose tolerance (blood) test or a hydrogen breath test.
If you are, in fact, lactose intolerant, you may still be able to eat certain types of dairy. While you’ll have to steer clear of milk and ice cream or suffer the consequences, hard cheeses and probiotic-rich yogurt usually don’t contain any lactose.  
2. You’re not lactose intolerant, but dairy still upsets your stomach.
Maybe you’ve been tested for lactose intolerance and the test came back negative, but you swear that eating dairy makes your tummy feel lousy. You’re probably not imagining it.
Dairy contains proteins such as casein and whey that many people are sensitive to, says Foroutan. “Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to test for a sensitivity,” she says.
If your gut is telling you that something is off, feel free to trust it. Or consider doing an elimination diet: Give up all dairy for a few weeks, then do a “challenge” during which you introduce different types of dairy products one by one to see how you react. (Butter, for instance, doesn’t have much lactose, but it has casein and whey.) You may want to see a nutritionist for guidance during your experiment.
3. Milk makes you feel sluggish.
Digestive issues aren’t the only possible signs of an intolerance. Someone who feels bloated, tired, or sluggish after eating dairy might be sensitive to one or more of the components in it. “Some people don’t even notice until the next day; sometimes we call it a ‘food hangover,'” says Foroutan.
If that sounds like you, it might be worth eliminating dairy for a few weeks and slowly trying to reintroduce it to see if it’s really the culprit. But the bottom line is that if you feel better without dairy, you don’t have to have it.
4. You feel congested when you eat it.
You might have heard that dairy increases mucus production, but there’s really no good research to support that notion.
That said, it’s possible that milk makes you phlegmy. Koff says this happens to her whenever she has milk or ice cream, and that many of her clients report the same thing.

Milk Isn’t Bad For You (But 6 Types of People May Want to Avoid It)
It used to be that few foods seemed as wholesome as a nice, cold glass of milk.
Your mom may have served milk with dinner or offered it at bedtime when you were feeling restless. You’ve seen your favorite celebs don milk mustaches as part of an iconic marketing campaign that’s spanned 20 years and appeared to solidify the idea that milk was not just healthy, but a necessity.
Turns out, it’s not.
“Any kind of natural food is not inherently bad; it’s eating patterns that can contribute to disease,” says Robin Foroutan, RDN, an integrative dietician at the Morrison Center in New York City and a spokesperson for the National Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
In other words, there’s little reason to think that any individual whole food on its own is going to ruin your diet. Milk isn’t dangerous. But milk also isn’t for everyone.

Conversely, the opposite is true: When people cut milk out of their diet and find they feel better, it’s often not because milk was wreaking havoc on their bodies. It’s because their overall diet quality improves when they replace that dairy with more nutrient-dense produce and other whole foods.
Another thing to consider is that, unless you’re going with skim milk, the drink will contain saturated fat. While the effects of saturated fat are hotly debated, most health experts agree that increasing saturated fat consumption elevates cholesterol, which can in turn increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.
Milk Myths You Don’t Need to Worry About
Not all concerns about milk are created equal, at least from a scientific perspective. For example, rumors that consuming milk will mess with your hormones, or cause heart disease or diabetes are largely unfounded.
Most mainstream experts say that, with the exception of a possible increased risk of prostate cancer (more on that later), the quality of any evidence indicating that milk would be dangerous is pretty weak—think “associations” or “based on animal studies” rather than high-quality controlled trials.
Also, most studies purporting to show milk’s potential harms also need to be considered in the context of other contradictory research. For instance, a study published earlier this year in the British Journal of Nutrition found that eating full-fat dairy products increased the risk of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes—yet a 2016 study, published in the journal Circulation, found that eating full-fat dairy was associated with a lower diabetes risk.
But Does Milk Make You Fat?
If you’ve heard that milk will make you fat, that’s not proven, either.
“It’s true that milk comes from mammals and has a biological purpose—to feed infants so they can grow up and develop,” says Foroutan.
Milk naturally contains growth hormone as well as IGF-1 (insulin like growth factor-1) — both of which are designed to make animals get bigger. But there’s really no proof that the amount found in milk would contribute to obesity—nor is it enough to make you get jacked. (There is some proof that drinking milk after a workout can help you build muscle, mostly thanks to the protein content).  
Of course, if you eat ice cream everyday or put cheese on everything, you might very well gain weight. But if you eat dairy—even full-fat dairy—in small amounts, it might actually help you slim down. “Fat sends an important signal to the brain that you’re full, which can help with portion control,” says Foroutan.  
The 6 Good Reasons to Ditch Dairy
While research is always evolving, for now the preponderance of evidence points to dairy being beneficial (or at least not harmful) for most people, says Webster.
For instance, a 2016 review of meta-analyses on concluded that dairy consumption was associated with easier weight control, neutral or reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, lower risk of stroke, and higher bone mineral density (though it has not actually been proven to reduce fractures).  
That all sounds great, but of course it’s not the full story. The biggest issue is that each person’s body is unique.
While most people seem to be able to tolerate at least some dairy, “if you don’t break it down well or have some sensitivity to it, then consuming dairy products may trigger inflammation,” says Foroutan.
So if you’ve been thinking you might be better off going dairy free, or at least limiting it to an occasional treat, your hunch might be correct if you fall into one of the following categories:
1. You’re lactose intolerant.
A true dairy allergy is relatively rare, but many people are lactose intolerant—meaning that they can’t properly digest the primary sugar (lactose) found in milk. As a result, eating anything with lactose triggers unpleasant GI symptoms like cramps, gas, or diarrhea.
“It’s easy to detect, because you’d have a pretty quick response to eating or drinking something with lactose in it,” says Foroutan. If you’d like a more official diagnosis, ask your doctor for a lactose tolerance (blood) test or a hydrogen breath test.
If you are, in fact, lactose intolerant, you may still be able to eat certain types of dairy. While you’ll have to steer clear of milk and ice cream or suffer the consequences, hard cheeses and probiotic-rich yogurt usually don’t contain any lactose.  
2. You’re not lactose intolerant, but dairy still upsets your stomach.
Maybe you’ve been tested for lactose intolerance and the test came back negative, but you swear that eating dairy makes your tummy feel lousy. You’re probably not imagining it.
Dairy contains proteins such as casein and whey that many people are sensitive to, says Foroutan. “Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to test for a sensitivity,” she says.
If your gut is telling you that something is off, feel free to trust it. Or consider doing an elimination diet: Give up all dairy for a few weeks, then do a “challenge” during which you introduce different types of dairy products one by one to see how you react. (Butter, for instance, doesn’t have much lactose, but it has casein and whey.) You may want to see a nutritionist for guidance during your experiment.
3. Milk makes you feel sluggish.
Digestive issues aren’t the only possible signs of an intolerance. Someone who feels bloated, tired, or sluggish after eating dairy might be sensitive to one or more of the components in it. “Some people don’t even notice until the next day; sometimes we call it a ‘food hangover,'” says Foroutan.
If that sounds like you, it might be worth eliminating dairy for a few weeks and slowly trying to reintroduce it to see if it’s really the culprit. But the bottom line is that if you feel better without dairy, you don’t have to have it.
4. You feel congested when you eat it.
You might have heard that dairy increases mucus production, but there’s really no good research to support that notion.
That said, it’s possible that milk makes you phlegmy. Koff says this happens to her whenever she has milk or ice cream, and that many of her clients report the same thing.
The reason why this might happen to some people isn’t totally clear, but it likely comes back to an intolerance. “If you have a sensitivity to something and you consume it, it will cause inflammation and your digestive tract will secrete more mucus; it’s how the intestines protect themselves,” says Foroutan.
5. You have a higher-than-average risk of prostate cancer.
The link between dairy consumption and several types of cancer is murky. Some studies, for instance, have said that it might raise the risk of breast cancer, whereas others show that it lowers it. (The most research seems to conclude that it’s associated with a lower risk of breast cancer.)  
Prostate cancer is a little different. The proof that dairy substantially raises prostate cancer risk is hardly iron-clad, but there’s enough reason for experts (including those at the American Cancer Society) to be somewhat concerned.
“It’s not the strongest evidence, but it’s worth mentioning,” says Malik. “If you’re at high risk of prostate cancer—maybe you have a family history or your PSA (prostate specific antigen, which can be measured via a blood test) is elevated—you might consider decreasing dairy.”
6. You just don’t want to eat dairy.
For most healthy adults, the best reason to eat dairy is because you like it. If you’re vegan and don’t wish to consume anything that involves animals, or are concerned about the toll that dairy farming takes on the environment, those are perfectly valid reasons to cut milk from your diet, says Malik.
Yes, you might struggle to get certain nutrients, like calcium, but there are other ways to meet your needs. Tofu, some beans, and certain leafy greens also contain calcium. When in doubt, consult a registered dietician.

Milk Isn’t Bad For You (But 6 Types of People May Want to Avoid It)
It used to be that few foods seemed as wholesome as a nice, cold glass of milk.
Your mom may have served milk with dinner or offered it at bedtime when you were feeling restless. You’ve seen your favorite celebs don milk mustaches as part of an iconic marketing campaign that’s spanned 20 years and appeared to solidify the idea that milk was not just healthy, but a necessity.
Turns out, it’s not.
“Any kind of natural food is not inherently bad; it’s eating patterns that can contribute to disease,” says Robin Foroutan, RDN, an integrative dietician at the Morrison Center in New York City and a spokesperson for the National Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
In other words, there’s little reason to think that any individual whole food on its own is going to ruin your diet. Milk isn’t dangerous. But milk also isn’t for everyone.
Here’s what you should know about who benefits most from milk, and who would be better off cutting back or going dairy-free.  
Just the Facts on Milk’s Nutrition
Milk—or, more specifically, cow’s milk—is indeed a good source of vitamins and minerals.
“Milk is a great source of protein, calcium, vitamin D, which are ‘nutrients of concern’ in the U.S. population,” meaning that many people don’t get enough, says Vasanti Malik, PhD, a research scientist in the department of nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “It also contains magnesium, along with other minerals and nutrients.”
“If you don’t consume dairy it’s really hard to get enough calcium,” which is crucial for strong bones, says Ali Webster, PhD, RD, Associate Director of Nutrition Communications for the International Food Information Council Foundation. The vitamin D and potassium in milk are also important for bone health.
Webster acknowledges that you can’t rely solely on milk to fight osteoporosis. You also need magnesium (milk has some but isn’t a great source) and vitamin K (found in leafy greens, fish, meat, and eggs)—but it does help you check off a lot of these boxes at once.
That said, milk isn’t the sole source of bone-supporting nutrients. A cup of spinach, for instance, has 350 mg calcium (slightly more than the 300 mg found in a cup of milk), and also provides fiber and folate. Of course, if you eat ice cream everyday or put cheese on everything, you might very well gain weight. But if you eat dairy—even full-fat dairy—in small amounts, it might actually help you slim down. “Fat sends an important signal to the brain that you’re full, which can help with portion control,” says Foroutan.  
The 6 Good Reasons to Ditch Dairy
While research is always evolving, for now the preponderance of evidence points to dairy being beneficial (or at least not harmful) for most people, says Webster.
For instance, a 2016 review of meta-analyses on concluded that dairy consumption was associated with easier weight control, neutral or reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, lower risk of stroke, and higher bone mineral density (though it has not actually been proven to reduce fractures).  
That all sounds great, but of course it’s not the full story. The biggest issue is that each person’s body is unique.
While most people seem to be able to tolerate at least some dairy, “if you don’t break it down well or have some sensitivity to it, then consuming dairy products may trigger inflammation,” says Foroutan.
So if you’ve been thinking you might be better off going dairy free, or at least limiting it to an occasional treat, your hunch might be correct if you fall into one of the following categories:
1. You’re lactose intolerant.
A true dairy allergy is relatively rare, but many people are lactose intolerant—meaning that they can’t properly digest the primary sugar (lactose) found in milk. As a result, eating anything with lactose triggers unpleasant GI symptoms like cramps, gas, or diarrhea.
“It’s easy to detect, because you’d have a pretty quick response to eating or drinking something with lactose in it,” says Foroutan. If you’d like a more official diagnosis, ask your doctor for a lactose tolerance (blood) test or a hydrogen breath test.
If you are, in fact, lactose intolerant, you may still be able to eat certain types of dairy. While you’ll have to steer clear of milk and ice cream or suffer the consequences, hard cheeses and probiotic-rich yogurt usually don’t contain any lactose.  
2. You’re not lactose intolerant, but dairy still upsets your stomach.
Maybe you’ve been tested for lactose intolerance and the test came back negative, but you swear that eating dairy makes your tummy feel lousy. You’re probably not imagining it.
Dairy contains proteins such as casein and whey that many people are sensitive to, says Foroutan. “Unfortunately, it’s very difficult to test for a sensitivity,” she says.
If your gut is telling you that something is off, feel free to trust it. Or consider doing an elimination diet: Give up all dairy for a few weeks, then do a “challenge” during which you introduce different types of dairy products one by one to see how you react. (Butter, for instance, doesn’t have much lactose, but it has casein and whey.) You may want to see a nutritionist for guidance during your experiment.
3. Milk makes you feel sluggish.
Digestive issues aren’t the only possible signs of an intolerance. Someone who feels bloated, tired, or sluggish after eating dairy might be sensitive to one or more of the components in it. “Some people don’t even notice until the next day; sometimes we call it a ‘food hangover,'” says Foroutan.
If that sounds like you, it might be worth eliminating dairy for a few weeks and slowly trying to reintroduce it to see if it’s really the culprit. But the bottom line is that if you feel better without dairy, you don’t have to have it.
4. You feel congested when you eat it.
You might have heard that dairy increases mucus production, but there’s really no good research to support that notion.
That said, it’s possible that milk makes you phlegmy. Koff says this happens to her whenever she has milk or ice cream, and that many of her clients report the same thing.
The reason why this might happen to some people isn’t totally clear, but it likely comes back to an intolerance. “If you have a sensitivity to something and you consume it, it will cause inflammation and your digestive tract will secrete more mucus; it’s how the intestines protect themselves,” says Foroutan.
5. You have a higher-than-average risk of prostate cancer.
The link between dairy consumption and several types of cancer is murky. Some studies, for instance, have said that it might raise the risk of breast cancer, whereas others show that it lowers it. (The most research seems to conclude that it’s associated with a lower risk of breast cancer.)  
Prostate cancer is a little different. The proof that dairy substantially raises prostate cancer risk is hardly iron-clad, but there’s enough reason for experts (including those at the American Cancer Society) to be somewhat concerned.
“It’s not the strongest evidence, but it’s worth mentioning,” says Malik. “If you’re at high risk of prostate cancer—maybe you have a family history or your PSA (prostate specific antigen, which can be measured via a blood test) is elevated—you might consider decreasing dairy.”
6. You just don’t want to eat dairy.
For most healthy adults, the best reason to eat dairy is because you like it. If you’re vegan and don’t wish to consume anything that involves animals, or are concerned about the toll that dairy farming takes on the environment, those are perfectly valid reasons to cut milk from your diet, says Malik.
Yes, you might struggle to get certain nutrients, like calcium, but there are other ways to meet your needs. Tofu, some beans, and certain leafy greens also contain calcium. When in doubt, consult a registered dietician.

I like to shop at out of the way convenience stores that are dirty and dangerous.
Really, I like to pull up in a bad neighborhood in my black Maserati and step out to buy my milk and eggs at a dirty dangerous convenience store…
Said “No one, ever!”
Seriously, no one says what I just said.
No way!
No one wants to go to the restaurant everyone says is terrible, no one wants to see a movie all their friends hated, no one wants to go out of their way to shop at a terrible store.
I want to go to the restaurant with the rave reviews!
I want to see the movie everyone is talking about and says i gotta see.
I want to go shopping at the new store with the great wine isle filled with exotics.
I want to get the phone that my friends have and love. Leaders lead, and markets follow.
Those few positive words from a friend, a peer, or someone just like me do something very special in the world of Branding, they “meld” together and become “Buzz”.
The buzz of a market leader.
You see, we all want to shop at the better stores, read the better books, eat at the better restaurants, and we all use the advice of friends, peers, and people just like us: but most of the time, we don’t say “Johnny said it’s good” instead we say “I heard it’s good.”
That’s the key hiding inside today’s gem: Leaders Lead, Markets Follow.

I like it when people say, “There are two kinds of people in this world” then they illustrate some point, right?
Whatever serves their purpose.
Well I’m going to do it:
“There are two kinds of people in this world: Producers and Consumers.”
A single equation at the center of every life, at the center of every brand “Net Producer, or Net Consumer.”
Listen, your brand, your business, is a sacred thing.
And I do mean sacred.
Like a cow.
A Sacred Cow.
A sacred ‘Purple Cow in a Tree’ for those that read lots of branding books… lol
The cow is a sacred animal in many cultures, and at the core of that is this “Producer / Consumer” balance.
Cows consume grass and weeds, and produce milk and poop.
The poop fertilizes the fields, the footsteps till the soil, and the milk nourishes the family, cheese, butter.
The cow produces babies, and those babies sometimes become food or make more milk.
See the reason it’s a sacred animal?
A well-kept cow produces more than it consumes.
It “Adds Value” to the individual family, and the community, and when well-kept, cows actually add value to society.
The example is even clearer with bees, but “Sacred Bees” is a phrase with no buzz around it… LOL
Sacred Cow!
Now that’s a phrase with buzz!!
Anyways, your Brand is your Sacred Cow.
You feed it, nurture it, protect it, grow and care for it so that it can produce two things:
“It adds value to society” and “it adds money to your bank account.”
Is that okay?
Can we be clear and honest here?
Your brand is sacred because it feeds and fuels your livelihood. Never forget that.
It must be cared for, cleaned, groomed, protected, loved, nurtured and if it is, and if it adds value to society, if it “produces more than it consumes” than it can grow and blossom in amazing ways you never thought of…
Your brand is a sacred cow.
So now you have to make the decision:
Do you want your Sacred Cow to be a leader or a follower?
Do you want your sacred cow to be the movie everyone hated? Or the movie everyone is talking about?

You see, in Branding we have these things called “triggers” and there are lots of them, lots of different kinds of triggers, but the most important one is “the Buy Trigger” because that’s how your personal sacred cow eats.
At the end of the day, you don’t have a brand without customers, we call that an art project. It’s only a brand if it’s conducting actual business and making actual transactions.
So the “Buy trigger” is the central trigger of every brand.
Listen, there are two aspects of shopping: “Looking to buy and looking around” and we need to make sure we service both those phases of the purchase cycle.
Now here’s the heart of todays lesson:
“When people are looking around, they are generally looking for the leader.
When people are looking to buy, they generally WANT to buy as close to the leader as they can afford.”
This is the simple truth of branding.
This is so basic as to be the fundamental business building block. “People are shopping for the best they can afford.”
I started today’s lesson with this idea of “Searching for the worst movie I could find.”
NO ONE DOES THAT, right?
We don’t go looking for the worst, we go shopping for the best.
In fact, that’s what shopping is “Looking for the leader”.

My buddy, he has a bunch of land, and he just bought a new tractor…
Big purchase, lots of options.
I asked him what kind he got matter-of-factly, he said, “John Deere.”
I don’t know anything about tractors, but I know one thing “John Deere is like the Lamborghini of tractors.”
I don’t know anything about tractors, but I know “John Deere is among the best.”
Why do I know that?
I’m not the one shopping for a tractor, but I know John Deere is a leader.
No one ever told me that.
I didn’t ask my friends peers or people just like me, I know it because I’ve heard it a thousand times and seen the John Deere logo at every high end job site I’ve ever seen.
This is how markets work, we have “Specific” referrals and reviews, but the central trigger is a “Generalized Average” it is the collection of reviews and referrals all taken as one single massive endorsement we call “Buzz.”
Tomorrow we’re going to dive in deeper on what Buzz is and how it works, then on Thursday we’re going to get specific on techniques to build buzz.
Today I want to set the stage with the overarching concept: Leaders Lead, Markets Follow (and) Brands must be net producers if they are going to lead.
The more value you add, the better your chance at being a leader.
This is the central crux of today’s lesson:
Start by making sure your brand is a net producer: The more value you produce, the stronger your brand fundamentals will be.
Everyday, I will give you either a question to think about or an action item to take steps on.
Today, it’s a question for you to think about:
“What specifically are you doing to encourage influencers to advocate and promote your brand?”
It’s one thing to build a community, it’s another thing to build a reputation.
At the center of both is how you encourage, nurture, maintain and reward influencers.
So for today, I want you to just be thinking about that: “What things do we specifically do to encourage influencers to promote our brand?” You get this, and you’re halfway there.
