Sky High Would Have Been a Much Better Movie if Will Stronghold Never Got His Powers

So either last year or the year before I rewatched Sky High with my best friend for his birthday. Last I’d seen it I was probably like 5. And it was a fun watch. I’m a sucker for mid-2000′s media, and Sky High is as mid as it gets. While we were riffing on every little detail (like how Zach, Ethan, and Magenta look like Danny, Tucker, and Sam from Danny Phantom) eventually we got to the point where Will gets his powers. And then it hit me: “Why?”

Will not having powers is a pretty big deal in the movie. Having powers is a BIG deal even this movie. Even seemingly useless ones like glowing or melting into a puddle separate you from the average everyday citizen. So much so there’s an entire floating high school made just to train up-and-coming heroes. One could argue that entrance to the school requires having powers, and Will shouldn’t be attending at all.

And I think the movie could have genuinely drove the “Anyone can be a hero” message a lot more, and played with Will’s character a bit more, if he didn’t eventually just get superpowers out of nowhere. It’s really weird he does at all, because Will goes from an underdog who has all this shame about not having powers, which has forced him to lie to his father and be an outcast in his school, to Superman almost immediately. And Will only really becomes a jerk because of these powers, abandoning his friends, only to redeem himself later because the situation calls for it.

I think, genuinely, the film could have been a lot better if Will just never got his superpowers, and he had to prove he could be a hero without them. Instead of using his super strength to throw around Royal Pain, he’d be helping to stop the school from crashing into the ground and standing up to her even when the odds are against him. All with the help of his fellow sidekick friends. It’d be easier for the viewer to relate to (don’t we all feel a little small compared to everyone else?) and have an overall more positive message. Otherwise, it’s really just the story of some privileged kid getting everything he wants, just a little later than he wanted.

I am a little confused, though. because in Layton Mystery Tanteisha, Marina has these charms on her bag, and Layton surmises that Luke gave them to her to serve as a means of verification, if she ever needed to turn to Layton for help. He would know that she was truly Luke's wife, because each of the charms represents a case they solved together. The train is clearly the Molentary Express, representing the events surrounding the Elysian box, and the rabbit is Subject 3, representing the events surrounding Future Luke's letter. So what's the bow?

One of my all time biggest pet peeves with historical(ish) fantasy is when the writer constructs a religion with a clear bias that it's stupid and false and therefore only the Stupid People and/or commoners believe in it and all the smart/elite main characters are like, quasi-atheists or otherwise just routinely flout established religious conventions of orthodoxy and/or orthopraxy because they're Too Smart for it or etc.

It's usually an extension of assumptions that people in the past were just less intelligent than in the contemporary, just being like "I know that the sun is a star millions of miles away that the earth orbits, but this ancient religion describes it as a chariot flying through the sky" and not really bothering to learn the context and just (consciously or subconsciously) settling on 'that's a crazy thing to think and was probably believed in because they were Stupid'.

And that whole attitude pisses me off so much. People were as 'smart' 10,000 years ago as they are today. These beliefs aren't just desperate, random flailing to explain phenomena that could not directly be accounted for either, it's not like people just looked at the sun and went "Uhhh I don't know what the fuck that thing is, actually. I guess it might be a chariot or a boat or something?? Yeah let's go with that." and based entire religious practices on this. Every well-established belief system exists within broader contexts of cultural values/subjective perceptions of reality/knowledge systems/etc, and exist as part of a historical continuum of religious practices that came before. Even when not Materially Correct, they have context and internal logic, they're not always dead literal with zero levels of allegory, and they're never a result of stupidity.
