What is the GBAU?
GBAU stands for Girlboss au, or Girlboss Alternate Universe, a somewhat joke name I started giving to some drawings I made of a female Batman and Superman. It has since evolved into whatever the heck is going on over on my tiktok page (@merymeou), and people tend to have questions that are difficult to answer with the character limit in the comments (I tend to ramble). Hence, this blog.
Anyway, the main difference is that the DC Trinity are all women. Curious? Look around!
Answers will be under #gbauanswer
How to ask a Question (tm)
Just click the ama button! I won’t answer everything but if it strikes my inspiration I def will! If you ask weird or upsetting stuff you will be blocked xoxo
Tumblr media
Can I do ___ with the GBAU?
Good news! Whatever your question is, the answer is: probably, yeah sure, go for it.
I don't own the concept of a gender swap, and I encourage you all to make your own versions! Have fun, go crazy!
As for fanart and fanfiction: if you're seeking to create something explicitly set in the world of this AU, it would be so cool if you wanted to credit me, but I only ask that you tag me so I can see it! Every time I see someone make content for this au, I become a little more bonkers. /pos
Why Does This Au Need to Exist? Why are you like this???
Well, short answer, it clearly doesn't. I'm aware that wonderful and in depth characters exist in the media of comics, however I often feel as if female characters are not treated with the respect and seriousness afforded to their male counterparts. As I am not a writer or artist of any comics, this au is my space to play around with the big 'what if': what if DC's most Serious Manlytm heroes were women? Hence the Au. Enjoy my silly little thoughts if you'd like, it's not too serious <3

That's how I usually feel when I think about the Male and Female role swap between the Franchise's Sea Gods.
Like say have the Wives of the Sea Kings be the Titular Main Rulers of the Sea (even in Different Timelines) rather than their own Husbands, while also having Triton and Mindy given different personalities.
It be way too easy if you put that kind of Swap choice on a piece of paper.
all this because i was trying to figure out an absurd au idea (what if every male character in the main cast swapped with a random female character who could fit their role)(im still workshopping that

How about fem! yan! Sephiroth? I have a feeling she has some differences with OG Sephiroth, but it's hard to describe properly. A different gender would definitely affect her experience in Shinra (she'd probably be just as popular, but her public image would probably be different). Would she have felt more alone than in canon? How would she have interacted with the other SOLDIERS? Would the distance between her and the other FIRSTs be a tiny bit greater? How would she treat Darling comparing to OG Sephiroth? I feel like she would be softer and maybe more clear with her feelings. Alright, maybe I'm over-analyzing. Anyway, I'm just interested to read how you see it and how her relationship with Darling could develop. It could even be completely platonic if you want.
This is my first request, I apologize if it didn't come out clearly enough. Feel free to ignore it if you’re not interested.
I've done some content relating to Yandere Female Sephiroth far back if you're interested here. Also, doing her musings too atm.
I think, for starters, that her gender would definitely make a difference. And let's be honest, her public image would probably be more sexualized and apparent than the implications we have now for her canon counterpart.
In this universe, instead of being Cloud's foil, Female!Sephiroth could be Tifa's! Both women often face objectification, are popular due to their beauty, which brings a lot of attention to the businesses they are associated with. They both are shy baby girls deep inside etc... However, Tifa has the support of Cloud and others, and poor Sephi lost her friends along the way. And do I need to go into how they physically contrast each other, too? Maybe short-haired Tifa in this universe, too? 🥺
The greatest thing about FF7's cast is that all the characters are so deeply connected, even thematically, so role swaps still work well in AUs.
If we assume Angeal and Genesis are still the same in this universe, then I can see her being a bit more distant towards them at first because of reasons stated above with her public image but she'd eventually forge deep bonds with them as her counterpart did.
When it comes to darling, I believe Sephiroth would find it easier to express her feelings compared to her male counterpart, but she struggles to find the right words to convey those feelings. In the HoS au, her yandereness makes her unhinged. She speaks her mind without a filter, occasionally coming across as crude. She also becomes overly affectionate because she had previously lost darling before and wants to make sure darling understands the depth of her emotions.

God there’s a significant group of people (mostly men oop) who want Starfire and Raven to ONLY be like their toon counterparts (often to just sexualize them solely), like they will write them as exactly like their toon counterparts in OFFICIAL DC COMICS and it’s so annoying. I seen people at least draw Starfire in her NTT design (though that’s probably because she’s sexualized but at least if make sense) but Raven is rarely drawn in her NTT design. And I feel that’s probably because a lot of modern artists are unwilling to draw women who aren’t sexy or considered attractive by society’ standards. Blackfire also suffers this tbh as ppl like to just make her a Starfire color swap instead of for keeping her angular features. (Also people would probably be enraged if an artist drew Raven with small breasts like George Perez did.
yeah I've noticed that people are way more willing to draw Starfire in her NTT design than Raven and it drives me crazy!! Sometimes you even see art where more or less everyone has a more NTT style look EXCEPT Raven. It's crazy!!
And yeah, I'm so sad that Raven doesn't have small breasts anymore. It wasn't even just Perez, she was drawn with a small chest throughout the entire NTT/NT run even with three different artists as the series regulars. And then they just... completely dropped it.
I don't think the current Titans art is terrible by any means, but it's definitely got basically the same body type and features for every female and male character. That happens a lot in comic books, but it does bum me out when I compare it to how much life the 80s Titans stuff had.

Entry 48 - 24 April 2023, 4:55pm
I remember the first time I chose a character for a game.
He was a guy, one whom I thought looked cool. I'd be fine with playing as a guy, right?
My thoughts, though, said otherwise.
I don't want to be like the guys who play games with female avatars.
Even back then, at the young age of 15 (perhaps even younger), I knew that I didn't want to be like the other guys I saw around me. And thus, I consciously overrode my desire to play the game with with a female avatar.
It doesn't make me any less of a man, does it? It just makes me weird, doesn't it?
...
I have, for some reason, been able to relate to the feelings that incels felt.
Hate. Directed to themselves and women, for not giving them a chance. That is the essence of the blackpill - the nihilistic worldview that no matter what they do, they can never find a romantic or sexual partner, resigning themselves to a life of unhappiness and rejection.
Why does that sound awfully similar to me?
...
Yet, why does it not?
Why does it lead me to envy my partner, or basically almost all the girls around me?
It's a personal hell. One I cannot yet climb my way out of.
...
What do I truly desire? If I desired to be called a girl, why, then, am I not glad to be called a she? Is it my body? My soul?
I've definitely flirted more with the ideas around gender-swapping and stuff, than my cis counterparts, whether male or female. I used to talk about rule 63 potions (which, in case you don't know, is the 63rd rule of the Internet: there will always be a gender-swapped version of something out there), and I used to seriously entertain the concepts of waking up as the opposite sex, or waking up beside a gender-swapped me - where others would talk about sex and stuff, I'd actually try to experience the changes that came with being of the opposite sex. For some reason, they'd always seem good(?). Or at least, I wasn't recoiling in disgust over how I'd be having periods and stuff of that sort.
I've talked about transitioning to get out of conscription. I've talked about how I felt different from the people around me. I've talked about how I've felt weird feelings towards girls (which seemed like attraction, though the thought of going out with them felt wrong, almost... like I was forcing something to happen).
Was there something more to the reason why I ripped that patch off myself, even though I felt good about it?
It doesn't make sense.
well...
Unless, the desires never pointed to who I was, but instead, a warped perception of what being a member of the other gender would be like, and the non-existent benefits that came with it.

Since shows and comics often make a genderbend episode where they switch their characters gender or create an alternate universe where they meet their gender swap counterparts. Have you ever wonder how Sienna would be like if she was guy and Fujin as a woman? Because Sienna is already sexy earth goddess and Fujin is already hot wind god. Imagine if there was an alternate timeline where Sienna is man and Fujin was woman. Male Sienna would every women falling in love with him but he only has his eye on female Fujin his adorable and beautiful wind goddess wife. I can imagine whenever male Sienna sees Female Fujin, he picks her up and playfully twirls her around and give her the most passionate and loving kiss ever. Ahhhhhh ☺️☺️☺️☺️🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 so romance. Sorry this is so long I just love genderbend stories.
Oh you're fine sweetheart! Actually I have thought about this! Male Sienna would look absolutely Lethal, a whole bad boy but a big ol loyal, loving teddy bear. Female Fujin would be so ethereal and irresistible- GAHHHHH! Now, I have to draw this!! 😃😃😃😍😍😍

Happy Miraculous Day, and International Cat Day! To celebrate, I drew every single one of Adriana’s transformations (genderbent Adrien for those who don’t follow my comics). Click past the break for close ups, and more info about their names and designs!
Tumblr media
Adriana Agreste (Adrien Agreste) - For her name, I wanted to make sure it was close enough to Adrien that you know who she is, but different enough that you can say it out loud and still hear the difference. Her jacket is sorter, her jeans are lighter, and her shoes(not shown) are a pinkish red.
Tumblr media
Kitty Noire (Chat Noir) - Her longer hair is meant to symbolize the freedom that she feels as Kitty Noire. Unlike her male counterpart, her tail has a unique quirk where it wraps around her legs as if to give her a hug. Her name is based on Future Bunnix’s name for Chat (Kitty Noir), but with the feminine spelling of “noir”. Future Bunnix’s counterpart would call her Kitten Noire.
Tumblr media
Bugett (Mister Bug) - Her name comes from one of Chat Noir's nicknames for Ladybug(French Dub). Like Kitty Noire, her hair is still long and messy, but the style is slightly adjusted to show off her earings.
Tumblr media
Bunny Noire (Rabbit Noir) - The fandom was dissapointed when we got the name "Rabbit Noir", so I decided to adopt the fandom’s preferred name for the female version. Her long pigtails are inspired by Usagi Tsukino, AKA Sailor Moon.
Tumblr media
Nagin (Aspik) - A Nagin is a female Naga, but it also translates to "female snake". I removed the hood everyone hates, and gave her Adriana's bangs to disassociate her from Kitty Noire (since Monsieur Bug isn’t supposed to know they’re the same). I also gave her a long braid to symbolize a snake's tail.
Tumblr media
Snake Noire (Snake Noir) - I know, it's the least original name here, but "Snake Noir" didn't really give me much to work with, so just blame Adriana for being unoriginal. I once again removed the hood, and made the braid longer as Ladybug’s hair always seems to get longer when she unifies with other Miraculous. I gave her back Kitty's ears, but I made the insides blue to match a little closer to the original.
Tumblr media
Passerelle (Catwalker) - It was pointed out to me that the name "Catwalker" was a reference to the fact that Adrien is a model and based on the actual catwalk, which Passerelle translates to in French. I’ve always hated Catwalker's green hair, so I made it gold and tied it in a bun to fit her “golden child” persona.
Tumblr media
Evanecente (Ephemeral) - The name is the feminine spelling of evanecent, which is a synonym for ephemeral. I didn't like the way the helmet looked on her, so I tied her hair up in a ponytail to symbolize the restraint her mother has on her.
Tumblr media
Kitty Blanche (Chat Blanc) - Not much to say about her, since she's just a pallet swap of Kitty Noire. "Blanche" is the feminine spelling of "blanc", and is still pronounced the same.

“Inside the Mind of an Active Duty Airman” #1
This little series will be compiled to things ranging from asks/questions to things to help out writers who don’t know much about the American Military or Military life as a whole.
Objective #1: Dog Tags
To start things off one thing I’ve seen most writers use in their stories pertains to dog tags. For those who don’t know much about these stylish military issued necklaces, They are often used to identify military personnel. Many things are on these dog tags such as Name, DoD ID numbers, Blood types, and religion of preference to name a few. These necklaces have two identical tags and one is used around the neck area and the other (often hanging off a small chain) is used around a military member's toes to help with identification if that person is deceased. These tags are NOT meant to be mismatched or swapped with anyone else, they bear an important role should a member go down or need important medical care such as receiving blood.
Dog tags are also not often carried by personnel who are at their home station(where they spend their time while not being deployed). Dog tags are only given out should someone become deployed or TDY (Temporary Duty Station) to another country or region where something could happen to personnel. And for most personnel they are often only given a single pair of dog tags but this number can often go up should their job requirements need it or are needed for their AFSC (Their job in the military). For writers who may be discouraged by this information don’t be! While it’s discouraged to share your dog tags that doesn’t mean you cannot get a new pair made outside the military, and ones that don’t have sensitive information on them. There are many people who make custom dog tags and events such as air shows that do it as well so it's possible to have a pair of dog tags for your stories!
Objective #2: Special Forces and Female based Characters
Now this is just something I’ve seen that’s commonly used in most writing and this is not to hate on anyone and their writing but something that I would like to share. The American military as a whole is one of the few top militaries in the world, it has some of the best equipment and most effectively trained personnel. But for those who want to go above and beyond just regular military standards there are Special forces options depending on what branch you're serving in.
Did you know there are different special forces that range in different specialties? While I won't dive into the specifics I'll just simply name a few from the 4 larger branches of the United States Military.
U.S. Army: The Green Berets, the Night Stalkers, and the Rangers.
U.S. Navy: Navy SEALS, and Navy SWCC (Special Combatant Craft crews)
U.S. Marine Corps: Marine MARSOC (Marine Corps Special Operations Command), and Marine RECON
U.S. Air Force: Special Tactics Teams (Pararescue, Combat Controllers, and Special Reconnaissance)
These special operations are the most rigorous of the branches, their training has often been known to break individuals down both mentally and physically. They are also known to have some of the roughest training in the world. My biggest concern is having female readers as part of these special forces simply because it isn’t realistic. Females are often rejected from these special occupations simply because the female body was not made to sustain the harsh treatment, even some of the most physically fit males often fail out of the training portion. There are also security concerns as female soldiers would be often used to persuade their male counterparts in POW (Prisoners of War) situations on top of many things that could be used as torture or trying to break down a persons ability to avoid enemy interrogation. While I’m fine with some writers having a G.I. Jane main character (you go queen!) There are harsh realities to being associated with a special operations unit.
Objective #3: Jobs in the Military
Are you stuck trying to decide on how to write a new reader or stuck trying to create an OC? Most fanfics for the CoD universe are primarily Special Forces!Reader, Medic!Reader, and Civilian!Reader. But did you know there are so many other jobs out in the military? In the United States Armed forces you're required to take the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) to see where you stand in different fields like Vocabulary, Mechanical, Electrical, and General topics to help determine your career field in your selected branch. The higher your individual scores are the more jobs you are eligible for those fields, there are also some jobs that require two attributes above a certain score.
For those here to look for other career options for your fanfics there are many to choose from. If your reader is more of a bookworm or even a technology nerd you can place them in Intelligence based jobs (Data Analyst, Cyber network defender, Counterintelligence Agents). Got one that is really good with their hands? Have them as more Civil Engineers (EOD, Firefighter, CBRN personnel). How about someone who is good at PR or Law there’s plenty of jobs to choose from that can often deal with both home station and deployed situations. The military has a wide variety of jobs for all levels of the military and all levels of personnel in all branches.
Objective #4: Ranks of the Military
This one is one of my least concerns of all simply because many branches have their own structure and own special ranks, and this will all be from the United States perspective as I cannot say anything about foreign countries. In most branches you only deal with two types of rankings: Enlisted and Officers. In the US the enlisted make up the majority of the armed forces, and the largest numbers are in between E-1 to E-4.
All branches have their own rank names that differ from others, but if you are creating a character that is associated with the military please look up whatever branch and there will often be a rank structure you can use! In the military most of the time officers and lower ranking enlisted hardly ever interact with each other outside Squadron/Battalion events, the more senior enlisted will have more interactions with officers out of the enlisted personnel.
Who qualifies as senior enlisted? These will often be some NCOs (Non-Commissioned Officers), and SNCOs (Senior Non-Commissioned Officers) and these guys/gals are usually E-5 and above.
One final note before I end here is in most cases Officers and Enlisted are NOT allowed to be involved romantically if they are in the same Chain of Command (the hierarchy of the military ranks). The only time this doesn’t apply is if both persons were legally married before one's military service or both were enlisted and one ended up commissioning to become an Officer. If this is in any other case than the two above it is often called Fraternization. And in the military if two individuals were caught doing this it can often be heavily punished by their Chain of Command.
Hey you made it to the end! Many thanks for reading and please share if you enjoyed it. As a final note this is not to slander/discourage anyone but its main function is to be used as a tool for others who may not understand the military lifestyle.

I am still obsessed with High School Musical and wrote a five-paragraph essay about Ryan Evans and his character development throughout the trilogy
My friends and family will no longer listen to my ramblings about any fandoms so I write essays instead, it's good writing practice at least.
Ryan Evans is a side character in the High School Musical franchise. Throughout the first movie, he is shown to be somewhat subservient to his twin sister, Sharpay. However, in the second film, he is given character development and a personality as a character separate from his sister. Ryan is a bright and flamboyant character, who is not for the age of the film would have been an openly gay Disney character. By the time of the release of the third movie, Disney had realized the perception the public had of the character and decided to force a relationship between him and a female character, Kelsi. Ryan had so much potential as a character, not only with other characters but as a gay icon, because despite Disney’s effort everyone is aware of his sexual orientation. Ryan is a fabulous character who once given a personality, became an icon for queer people as well as (through the song I Don’t Dance) showed queerness is not determined by a person's interests or outward appearance.
Who is Ryan Evans? Everyone knows the iconic character from the high school musical trilogy, but what is the significance of his character? Why is he important to the story? In the first film, High School Musical, he is presented as a quieter more subdued male counterpart to the main antagonist, Sharpay. He is never seen separately from her or given much personality as he is constantly out shown by Sharpay. During the many musical numbers he performs with his sister, he isn’t ever the focus nor does he have much challenging vocals or choreography. This was done purposefully to show the power dynamic between Ryan and Sharpay. In the Second movie, High School Musical 2, During the song, “Fabulous”, a song primarily about Sharpay and her summer expectations, at time stamp 2:00, Sharpay diverts from the flow with the lyrics, sung by her and her brother, “Nothing to discuss, Everything’s got to be perfect for me!”. At the end Sharpay interrupts him from saying us, following the song’s rhythm, by singing “me!” showing she sees herself as more important, and Ryan allows her to as if he expected her to interrupt him providing us with evidence of him believing himself beneath her.
Ryan begins his character development early in the second film, by seeming upset with Sharpay and the way she’s treating him; as if he is merely a toy for her to play with and then later discard. The first major showcase of his character development is the song, I Don’t Dance, which is a homoerotic song about dancing vs baseball being used as a euphemism for bisexuality. Ryan is attempting to convince Chad, a wildcat basketball player, baseball player, and track and field runner, that he can dance and participate in sports. This is the first time Ryan interacts with characters other than Sharpay, his parents, or Fulton, the manager. This is significant because it shows not only the other characters but also the audience that Ryan is separate from his sister. The song repeats the lyrics, “I don’t dance. I know you can. Not a chance. If I could do this [baseball] well you could do that [dancing]. But I don't dance.” This is of course a double entendre, once again showing the hetero vs homo, ending in Chad saying, “I’m not saying I will [dance in the show] but if I did what would you have eme do?” showing the ending in at least partially accepting his bisexuality. In the scene following it, Chad and Ryan are seen sitting very closely together on a nearly empty bench eating while having swapped clothes. While it may have merely been a display of sportsmanship, with the contents of the prior song, it is more likely a reference to pg-13 or higher activities off-screen. This song also shows queerness in a new sense as in beyond the white, L.A., iced coffee, feminine, Yass gay men; using a black jock breaking many media stereotypes. While at the time of the second film’s release in 2007. Neither Chad nor Ryan had confirmed sexualities however Chad did have a girlfriend in the movie. However, years later many people involved in the production confirmed the intent behind the characters and the song.
In the third and final movie of the franchise, Ryan goes to his senior prom with Kelsi, the only prominent female character that isn’t either in a relationship or related to him. At this point in the franchise, Disney realized the implications of Ryan’s queerness and tried to stifle it. The relationship felt forced and stiff as there was no buildup of tension, similar to that of Troy and Gabriella, whose relationship seems to have no foundation which may be the cause of the on-again-off-again status. If Disney wished to put Ryan and Kelsi in a believable relationship it would have been built from the first relationship with slight differences in both characters as they both have heavily implied queerness at the base of their characters. However, Ryan being closeted is not entirely negative as his actor. Lucas Grabeel, has stated had Ryan been a confirmed queer character he would not have taken the role; instead wanting it to be played by a queer actor.
In Conclusion, Ryan Evans is a confident queer character who was shoved into the closet by a homophobic company to make more money. He is a perfect example of character development going from standing behind his sister and following her every word to standing across from her making eye contact and telling Sharpay her failure is entirely her fault and he won’t bow to her anymore. He could have been a much more powerful character had Disney embraced his character and not forced an underdeveloped heterosexual relationship onto him and Kelsi. Ryan is the most well-developed character in the films, the others often seeming two-dimensional as well as many of the issues like who would care if a basketball player baked or a skater played the cello, no one. So the majority of the first film felt like a middle schooler had written characters doing things because the author/director said so not because of intrinsic or extrinsic reasons, just plot convenience.

Low: Darsy!
Drake: This can’t be female Ghost.
Apoo: I know it’s hard to believe, but that is female me.
Kid: I can see why Drake says that.

RWBY and the “Male Shield” dissonance
If it wasn’t Blake and Yang vs Adam, Volume Six got a lot of pushback from those who felt that RWBY weren’t acting “heroic” when trying to take an airship from Cordovan in their journey to Atlas.
This being in spite of how it was far from dissimilar to other stories with this sort of narrative beat. The heroes defying authority for what they feel and know is right is a trope practically ubiquitous to YA fiction among other stories featuring teenage/kid protagonists.
Many claim that this backlash is simply based in misogyny and, well, yes but there’s a bit more to it. It’s a bit more complicated.
Female characters are allowed by fans (and writers alike) to do what their male counterparts do... so long as said male counterpart is the audience’s proxy if not the real protagonist. They’re part of a team who answers to a male leader and follows their instructions.
Maybe they’re treasonous but we’re less inclined to question the male protagonist’s judgement calls. Even when we know they’re not the best, we’re also willing to take a step back and maybe forgive them for not getting it right. Nobody’s perfect. This is part of their growth.
Swap the genders for the leaders along with most of the male cast and suddenly you get lawbreakers instead of rebels fighting the system. Suddenly, you got fans questioning, “Who’re the real heroes?” when other stories with eerily similar scenarios don’t get as much flack.
In fact, Team RWBY garnered a similar kind of backlash after “The Lost Fable.” The revelation that Salem couldn’t be killed was bad enough but learning that Ozpin knew this full well pushed many of them over the edge. The way some people went about it, however, Ozpin was lionized as “only doing what they can” while Team RWBY was demonized as ganging up on him.
Yet the mentor disappointing their student is, again, a very ubiquitous thing in most fiction and especially fantasy. It often represents the failing of the past generation as well as the need for the new to improve upon what can before. Of course, with those stories, a huge feature of them is a male protagonist front and center.
It reminds me of the “White Shield” concept during many Black Lives Matter protests where Caucasian allies would go up at the front lines in knowing that the cops won’t be nearly as hard on them compared to those leading the rally. Not that it stops the police but it does act as a dampening agent in the best case scenarios.
What we get with RWBY is that if Qrow (ignoring his downward spiral) decided that on the whole Cordivan thing, it would be seen as a “it’s dirty but needs to be done” sort of plan. He’s not only male but seen as a “rogue who doesn’t play by the rules” as his fight with Winter established.
Oscar would’ve gotten off lighter. He’s a plucky underdog trying to prove himself amongst more experienced peers. For him, coming up with a plan that goes belly up would be fairly pedestrian for his type of character.
I know that some might step forth to object to these “bold claims.” However, I’m hardly saying that one would verbally admit that he has a problem with girls as the protagonists. Rather, it’s more about those small feelings you have within as well as double standards for certain type of characters in certain roles.
It’s like a bad stain on an otherwise good rug. You can scrub away at it until it fades but it clings and clings once it has set in. One might not even notice it after a while and think, “that’s just how it is,” blindly.
I mean, by this logic, Red vs. Blue is just an unwatchable mess.

What are your thoughts on the Life and Death counterparts of the Cullens?
Oh boy, can of worms.
In short, my canon-friendly blog draws a hard line of NOPE when it comes to Life and Death. The Cullens are very reliant on their genders, swap it up and there wouldn’t be a coven in the first place. Not as we know it, anyhow. To swap things up without anything changing is to erase the experiences of men and women through history.
Disclaimer - I haven’t actually read the book, but I’ve gathered enough from the Twilight wiki. And since you’re not asking me about the plot, I think we’re good.
Alphabetically:
Archie. Both men and women were admitted to mental asylums at the turn of the century, but it was largely women. Mary Alice Brandon was forcibly institutionalized by her abusive father, which in turn was allowed to happen because no one believed her stories and thought she was mad. The story screams “Hysterical woman”. Could the same thing have happened if she were a boy? Sure. But I find it reductive.
Carine. Hoo boy, this one had me so exasperated I have a fic on it. That one gets slightly AU as her father survives the vampire, whereas in canon he was killed, but I say it goes. Anyway, Carine. You can’t take a 17th century man, make him a woman, and expect the same character to come out the other end. You just can’t. Carine and Carlisle are not going to be the same person. I think if Carine was anything like her male counterpart, she would stay in Volterra far longer than he did, if she ever left, as Volterra would be the one place in the world she could pursue knowledge, where she could educate herself and become an academic, the same as any man. It’d be her equality oasis, and she’d be leaving behind more than friendships if she left. If she went into the human world, or even tried to become a doctor, she’d have to crossdress. And I imagine she’d still be crossdressing in 2005, because misogyny and sexism isn’t going away anytime soon and it’s just what she’s used to by now. Carine puts on trousers and a fake beard before she leaves the house, it’s just how she lives her life.
Earnest. This guy is just... lackluster. Esme was turned because her husband was shitty and her son died, so she jumped off a cliff. Alright, let’s give Earnest a shitty wife and a dead kid, now he’ll jump off a cliff too. It’s just so uninspired, and I question the fact that Esme was abused, while Earnest’s wife was an alcoholic. Why can’t the woman be abusive?
Edythe. Edward’s character is strongly informed by his gender, yet I can’t imagine girl Edward being any less creepy. In case any of my readers have read @theoriginalcarnivorousmuffin‘s fic Lily and the Art of Being Sisyphus, I picture Edythe as the character Tequila. Which is to say girl!Edward gives strong vibes of an intense and creepy (it’s Edward) lesbian. Given Edward’s backstory, Edythe would still be turned, though. So, that still happens.
Eleanor. Mauled by a bear. Alright. I have no thoughts on that. I lied, I do. Eleanor’s uninspiredness is one of the reasons why this book is redundant. There’s nothing to do with this character, and so nothing is done. Nothing changes. Which, if we’re changing everyone’s gender, then the meaningful way to do that is to look at how that would change things. How has male and female socialization affected Edward and Bella? Who would Jessamine, Carine, Royal be? These questions are unfortunately rhetorical because Life and Death sure isn’t answering them.
Jessamine. It’s nice that Jasper isn’t a confederate in this AU, but I just find the story of Jessamine contrived. Besides, Jasper wasn’t supposed to be in the army, he lied about his age. If gender changes nothing, wouldn’t Jessamine crossdress her way into the army? Not that I’d want her to, glad she didn’t, but... Like the other Cullens, Jessamine’s backstory becomes a thought exercise of “How can I make the Cullens still happen, and as close to their original backstories as possible?”, one in which the answer is apparently to treat their backstories like check points. Jessamine gets turned by Maria, check, becomes warrior, check. It just feels so lazy to me.
Royal. Easily the worst. Well, Carine is the worst in terms of making no sense, but Royal... don’t genderbend Rosalie, people. And if you insist then don’t take out the rape. It’s just insensitive and uncalled for all around.
Then we have the fact that Aro and Caius were killed off-screen in a ridiculous manner. Let’s say that they were caught killing Didyme. So what? There’s no vampire cops. They were the leaders of their coven. If they’re caught killing Didyme it would mean Aro is sad because Marcus will leave, and he just killed his sister for nothing. What won’t happen is that they’re executed.
Mele’s power is another thing I take issue with. If a power like hers existed in canon... well, Caius would have a gift, for starters. More, the Volturi guard would be a repository of loyalists who were bequeathed gifts as rewards. The vampire world would be combed for new gifts, as it would only be prudent for Aro to have as many as possible and his potential enemies none. It’d be a different world, period.
The Volturi debacee seems to me like a misguided shot at girlpower on Meyer’s end, that this time around Sulpicia and Athenodora come out on top while Aro and Caius get their just desserts. Like everything else in Life and Death, it fell flat.
EDIT: Apparently I mixed up my Royces and my Royals. Yikes. Praise be to @toquesreveladores for the catch

Fuck it, I’m gonna say it.
Finn deserved to be the central character of the sequels, not Rey. And no, them as co-leads doesn’t work because fandom is a racist dumpster fire who would have taken the opportunity to build her up as the star anyway - which we can see, because FINN was the central figure to The Force Awakens. He moved the plot along, if you take Finn away from that movie, the whole damn thing needs rewriting, while Rey is more there to facilitate and move his story along. But TLJ and RoS end up shoving him to the side, even with RoS TRYING to bring up his importance by even alluding to the idea of Finn’s Force sensitivity - something that TLJ wants to toss aside entirely.
And it would have been a whole HELL of a lot more meaningful for the trilogy to have Kylo trying to make a big deal out of a rivalry with Rey, trying to make her the only one he’d allow to defeat him, only to have Finn shut him up and kick his ass in their final fight, the one that doesn’t presently exist.
We deserved Finn’s story. Rey’s story, though? Hers is one that the Star Wars universe has done a million times. Hell, it’s Luke’s story, just swapping out a male character for a female character. Like, sure, “the Force is female” might make for a great slogan, but Rey is still a prop for the sake of fucking Kylo’s development all the same, because she can’t get to do a damn thing for herself that doesn’t involve him. It’s not a very empowering feminist tale, that her growth and development depends on this man, who she also sets out to “fix,” for no good reason and actually plenty of good reason that she should NOT try to fix him.
(And don’t start me a-fucking-gain on the fact that Finn got dropped from leading man to disposable C-plot in the name of promoting the fucking neo-natsee who chose fascism in his place...)
Finn’s story was the one that needed to be told. Rey’s... wasn’t. Hers is tried and true within the Star Wars universe. And honestly? If the Sequel Trilogy hadn’t had her? I genuinely think that it would have been an improvement, because then it would have HAD to keep the focus on Finn.
Rey’s just a very flat character who is pulled along by whatever the plot needs her to do and be in the story being told (by VERY different storytellers, no less), which just doesn’t actually let her actualize into a full character - hell, by the end, it’s the character who SHOULD be the bad guy who gets to fulfill the role of hero.
Finn is the REAL counterpoint to everything that Kylo Ren is - Finn is a rank and file stormtrooper to Kylo’s top level enforcer. Finn was taken by the First Order as a child and made to be one of them, Kylo chose to join them. The order to slaughter a village that Finn refuses to follow was issued by Kylo. Where Kylo shows anger, Finn shows compassion. THEY are the mirrors to one another, and THEY should have been rivals. Again, it would even ADD to Kylo as an antagonist by having him explicitly dismiss his ACTUAL rival in the name of pursuing a rival that he would rather have a connection to.
But instead, we have Rey basically take over Finn’s arc as the movies go on, making her into the central figure, the counterpart to Kylo, when she NEVER NEEDED TO BE. In fact, the Rey from TFA? She had every reason to think that Kylo was dead after their fight on Starkiller, a fight that she certainly was ready to kill him during. And yet, so much of her character in the next two movies centers on the idea that she is going to either be a better student and Jedi than Kylo or even that she can redeem him. Because... fuck if I know.
This should have been Finn’s story. And it is racism that decided that there should be this other character who exists and takes over his arc, leaving him as a character with nothing.
* = Note that I am not slamming any actor in this, just the executive decisions made that pushed Finn into the background when he was even sold to John Boyega as the Luke Skywalker figure of this trilogy.

I have been yelling about wanting Xenoblade X on Switch but let's talk about what I'd like to see in a Switch version
This is probably too much to ask but: Stable online. It would be very refreshing to play without being kicked off the server so often (online play is optional but you can get some nice items out of it)
Better tutorials. I learned this game's combat from youtube. Tutorials suck and the manual did not explain much either. So pls add better tutorials. I think more people would like the game when it is properly explained
Show the exact skip travel location on the map. This is small compared to the others but it is really annoying when you skip travel just to find out the actual place you traveled to is on the opposite side of the segment
Make quest tracking easier. Like they did in DE actually show which item diamonds or what enemies we have to kill to get the quest items we need. I spend a lot of time on Xenoblade wiki just to figure out where an item spawns or what enemy drops it. Some quests give some direction but I'd like it to be a bit easier. Game is fucking big after all
Show the live location of partymembers on the map. You swap partymembers by talking to them in the city. Sometimes they're not on their usual spot tho because of a heart to heart and they can be impossible to find and it is very frustrating when you need that specific character for a mission
Allow to quit story/affinity missions. I kinda understand that they do not allow you to drop partymembers needed for a certain mission and they don't want you to do multiple at the same time. But sometimes you start playing an affinity mission to find out you were not ready for it and all you can do is struggle to the end. There is an option to lower the level of bosses when you fail a few times but it just sucks you cannot quit and retry the quest a later time.
Expand fashion gear to include weapons. You can chooss different gear for stats and looks but you cannot do this for weapons which is a shame because some weapons look really cool and I'd like to use them visually while having stats from better weapons
Also let us shop for fashion gear instead of having to earn the tanktops and funky glasses through quests. Keep them as rewards but also add a store to the commercial district and let me buy my ugly sweater and bright purple pants.
I almost forgot: add more story. Either give us a new epilogue or give us a sequel. No spoilers but this game needs a continuation. Desperately.
Also: playable Wrothian pls I am begging you Nintendo
This one is very specific to one (1) quest but: mark on the map where you have already found lobsters so I don't have to check 49 locations with a video guide to figure out which one I am missing. Fuck this quest in particular.
I would personally like to see some of the female versions of gear be less sexualized but that's never gonna happen because it's so often sexy over functional when it comes to female armor in games. There is decent gear for women in the game it's just that some items are so obviously sexualized compared to their male counterpart and I hate that. You can have sexy gear in the game but be equal about it and sexualize the men too. Not have a piece of armor cover up a man completely but leave a boob gap when equipping the exact same armor piece on a woman

Do you think a genderbend Frollo would be any different than the original? Like would it recontextualizad or change the story and the meaning of the songs?
I find your idea very interesting, but I’ve seen people make similar comments and some have raised the point that maybe it could stigmatize the lgbt community.
I get you. I think in intracommunity terms it's a little less important to watch what characters you portray as lgbt and how you do so, and like. Presumably nobody cishet is reading my blog which makes it an intracommunity space, where I can say that a lesbian Frollo would still be predatory and racist, and people won't hear "lesbian = predatory."
I do think a genderbent Frollo would be handled differently by the story, realistically. I don't really do genderbends just to think about how they might be physically or aesthetically or """innately""" different, it comes off kinda gender essentialist to me.
But Disney writes women different than it writes men. Hell, pretty much every corporate IP does things with male characters it wouldn't dream of with female characters. Given that this is the case:
Frollo is a lot less sympathetic in the Disney movie, and maybe even a little less complex, than in the musicals and novel. This is because, from what I can gather, the novel leans into how Sad his situation is, and that's sort of hard to put into a children's film without accidentally telling children they should feel bad for sexual predators.
This pretty much would not happen in a 90s disney movie if the genders were swapped. DEFINITELY not in a lesbian context. But if somehow it did, Disney being a gender essentialist company, I think they'd try harder to slip in something about Frollo having a sad backstory. Both to (only partially) excuse her actions and more importantly, to code her as only gay because of her past trauma. Women can be villains, but they aren't often sexual harassers in Disney canon.
Would she still overtly show attraction to Esmeralda? Would Esmeralda still appear in the fireplace? Maybe! But I can imagine the vocal direction for Hellfire being less 'angry' and more 'broken down.' The lyrics might even be different, or the score more unsettling than booming. The big note at the end might be a scream/wail instead.
I think the LGBT community would be split on this version of Frollo. On one hand, she never outright says she's gay, but shows it by villainous means, which makes her a gay-coded villain. On the other, if Esmeralda's also shown to be lesbian or bisexual, this would give them a positive counterpart.
Either way, by 2021, the lesbians would be stanning anyway. Thank you for this question!!! And tysm if you read to the end of this, haha
