Hey, look at me! I did it. I listened to a new-me-album. I don’t do that very often.

It took me 2.5 years to listen through all the mechs albums and feel like I have spent a good amount of time with each, feel content with them. Reach for them all equally as much (except maybe TtbT2, which is my favorite).

It has taken me 8 months to decide to listen to a second Jessica Law album. Not because I didn’t like Languid Little Lies, but because I absolutely adore it!

I’m just so happy and content to listen to the same stuff all the time that I don’t ever feel the desire to seek out new stuff. That goes for music, podcasts, tv, movies.

I feel a bit bad for not having more knowledge on the other projects mechs members have done and continue to do. I would like to love everyone’s work, it’s just gonna take me years to get through everything sufficiently. But also that means I don’t have to fucking worry if I do come to a point that I’m desperate for something new because there will be something to reach for.

And like, I didn’t like HNOC for quite a while. I continued to listen to it on occasion because I liked everything else I knew by them; didn’t understand why I didn’t have any enjoyment from it. I think it was mainly because I had almost zero knowledge of Arthurian legend. Had to read Gawain and the Green Knight in high school and listened to a retelling of the story where Merlin gets trapped in a cave forever by a lady on Myths and Legends (podcast); didn’t really care at all. Wanted to care (about Arthurian Legend) because I knew that a lot of Celtic myth got fucked up and put in there. So everytime I listened I’d end up reading more about Arthurian legend because I couldn’t remember who was who until finally I understood it well enough that I could actually enjoy everything smart about it and the music itself and trans Mordred and more and more. I didn’t have that issue with OUaTiS or UDaD or TBI because I had knowledge of European fairytales and Greek myth and enough about Norse myth already. Same reason I usually skip Drop Dead, the first song on my favorite mechs album. I just don’t care about it at all, in an ambivalent way. It doesn’t do anything for me. But I also have no experience with Crypt of the Necrodancer. But I listen to it on occasion because there’s nothing wrong with it and maybe this time will be the time it clicks.

Either the Reader is mute and they (characters) don't know/understand sign language or they somehow lost their voices on their transmigration to Teyvat and can only write now. But the characters are left trying to decipher what the Reader wrote.

Reader: "wat, y u sayin dat?"

Kinda crazy how the crossover proves why there shouldn't have been one in the first place. Baki and kengen are very different but constantly get grouper together. Like yea, there might be a few similarities/references when it comes to kengen with baki, but like they are both so different, especially for them to take place in the same universe. Like the shit with pickle, so no one on the kengan side heard of pickle even tho everyone in the world was aware of his existence????

WARNING! This rant is a very subjective and hot take about Prismo [Adventure Time] & how the modern fandom treats him. This is a personal and emotionally driven rant. if that doesn’t sound good to you, please do not read this rant.

hello to anyone reading this! you probably don’t know me or you don’t know much about me, but i’m justaprismolover. i’ve been obsessed with prismo for a very long time, about three years or so. he was this major interest of mine that i would constantly think about 24/7.

he was this huuuge obsession of mine that i consistently was enamored by. the phase seemed to never wear off. i drew him, animated him, wrote fanfictions about him, i had elaborate daydreams about him, i started making an album about him (which i only discontinued because all of the songs suck lol), i posted about him and ranted and raved to my friends, said his name many times every day, made AUs for him, and i even started archiving every drawing i saw of him. you see, prismo drawings back in the day were very rare, so i was constantly starving for tha goods (fanart). i would always look him up on deviantart and google to see if anyone posted art of him. i followed and subbed to anyone who showed interest in him. i had looked him up on youtube and deviantart and pinterest countless times. i started seeing the same prismo content over and over again, which is reasonable, but i, who at the time started to archive every piece of work of prismo i could find, had this crazy goal of archiving every work i could find of prismo. so i started making social media accounts for the sole purpose of archiving content containing him and dipping.

i made a tiktok account (which was banned after one day for some reason?? i didnt comment or have a trashy username or anything idk) i made a twitter account (total waste of time i couldnt find any prismo stuff) and i made a tumblr account, the only account i kept. i originally wasn’t going to at first but tumblr sorta stuck with me. there were a wee amount of prismo fans who loved him just like me! so i stuck around and started posting art just for fun.

then something interesting happened. a new fiona and cake show was coming out, and a depressed looking prismo was right there in it! i was excited to see more prismo, but i was also kind of worried. i was scared the prismo ‘fandom’ (it was literally like 5 people at the time) wouldn’t be the same after fiona and cake came out. what if prismo became a tumblr sexyman and they started humanizing him and making him act super out of character? what if he was downplayed as a “silly blorbo”? what will happen to my archive? will there be too much art to archive?

i know that it might sound selfish to be saying stuff like this, but i’m sure everyone has felt it before. that feeling when something tiny you like became popular and you just sat there thinking “i was here first!” its petty but its valid as long as you aren’t putting anyone down for getting there later than you.

so i comforted myself by telling myself that it won’t be that big of a deal and prismo probably wouldn’t play a big part. its not like there was a huge prismo craze in 2012 when he first was introduced or anything like that. there’s going to be so much new cool artwork of prismo made by so many cool people that will all put their own lil twists on him, and in a month most of the prismo likers will move on which means it’ll be me and a bunch of dedicated prismo enjoyers, but not too many, and it’ll be like one of those teeny cool fandoms. yep, that’s what i told myself. it’s not like i was fully convinced by this or anything but it kept me afloat. i just kept on doing what i usually did until the show came out, and…

boy, was i wrong.

prismo played a huge role! he CREATED fiona and cake! he had new characters to interact with! there was new art! new fanfiction! a huge brand-spanking new prismo fandom flooded into tumblr. prismo playlists! prismo cosplays! prismo crafts! i was flabbergasted. totally enamored by this wave of content. do you know how insane it feels when this character that was forgotten by everyone but you and some others suddenly gets extremely popular?! it’s like you’re dying in the sahara desert of dehydration when suddenly you trip into lake baikal. it was insane. and, it wasn’t THAT bad! yeah, there was some headcanon stuff and “sillyposting” that i didn’t like, but hey, most of the prismo stuff kept him looking the same and drew really neat looking art of him! i was ready to embrace this new prismo epidemic with open arms if it wasn’t for one teensy weensy itty bitty minor problem…

Scarab.

ya see, scarab and prismo to this new era of prismo lovers are absolutely inseparable. you cant have one without the other. they’re treated akin to simon and betty, where if you draw one, you must draw the other. pink, yellow and blue is no longer prismo including his lil blue pupil, but now its prismo, the wall of the time room and scarab! pretty much what i’m saying is the new prismo fandom was almost ALL prismo x scarab shippers. hell, most of them joined BECAUSE they liked the pairing itself. the prismo fandom pretty much became the prohibited wish fandom, which to someone like me who doesn’t ship it… was… something. yeeep. it was totally something alright.

i know its easy to make fun of me for being sad about a ship that everyone else in the fandom ships, which i mean, fair enough, it’s pretty funny, but i hope you get my point of view as someone who doesn’t ship the ship and doesn’t really care for scarab. i’ve been so dedicated to doing my weird little prismo stuff for so long, just me and sometimes me and a few others, and suddenly, this humongous wave of people come who start drawing all sorts of ship art with this… bug dude thingy that i didn’t even care for. and its only. ship art. which made me feel so left out of all the fun. i can’t force myself to like the ship, because, well, not only is that near impossible for me but i don’t like the tropes and its a ship that’s pretty lustful and often puts the characters in sexual scenarios with one another.

you see, the ship alone isn’t the whole issue. it’s the way the ship is portrayed, and especially the way prismo is portrayed.

back in the day, prismo was characterized by most people (including me) to be this super chill yet awkward guy who was funny and cool yet lonely and kinda clingy (which was proved to be CANON cuz hes obsessed with jake in Fiona and Cake HEHEHEHH). he was a side character who was kinda mysterious which left him up in speculation. everyone had their own little prismo theories. the best part about prismo was that nobody really forced him to have a one dimensional trope (ironic).

like, there weren’t any moments in canon that made everyone think he was obsessed with something like, pickles or destroying universes or whatever. you know how so many fanon side characters are often attributed to one singular thing they like or do, and so everyone makes it as if they’re obsessed with doing it to the point where it’s more of a lifestyle than a hobby to that character? prismo didn’t get that treatment! many people who liked him UNDERSTOOD that he wasn’t some guy who sat around in his hot tub all day manically making pickles or messing around with the lich. (true ogs remember prismo x lich. RIP that ship you sucked but the art was delicious)

so many people understood that below the surface he was lonely and just needed somebody to talk to, how he could never leave the time room. we based our drawings more on the character himself, his internal struggles and external battles. and yeah, most prismo fanart… WAS JUST PRISMO! and the prisjake art was (and still is) almost ALL wholesome and cute, because, well, prismo never came off to anyone as a sexual person!

and the just prismo drawings were unique too! so many of them explored different concepts and ideas, which is something i rarely see nowadays, cuz most of the art is just him calling scarab petnames and writing fanfics.

warning: the following paragraph contains mentions of art of sexual harassment. please skip this paragraph if you are uncomfortable with this topic. please note that this is my main reason as to why i do not like the modern prismo fandom.

the biggest issue i have with the modern prismo fandom is that they portray him as a very lustful person, someone who openly talks about doin’ the deed towards scarab as soon as he sees him. so many depictions of this pairing will show prismo telling scarab he’s hot whilst scarab is trying to kill him, or saying things like, “please do” when scarab makes genuine threats to end his life, which in turn makes scarab angry and uncomfortable. other depictions include prismo GRABBING SCARAB WITHOUT HIS CONSENT! and i hate to break it to some, but that is harassment! what surprises me is how common works like these are. i constantly see them on my dashboard. people just seem to love the idea of prismo going, “now that we’re in the same dimension, i can do whatever i want to you.” i would show examples so yall can see what i mean, but that’d be really stupid of me to go showing around peoples art and giving specific examples. so, just look out for it, and you might start seeing it more. (these types of drawings have died down as the time goes on but they used to be a lot more common in the early f&c days). all i’ll say is, prismo grabbing or saying sexual stuff to scarab is not cute if scarab looks uncomfortable or is telling him to cut it out or leave him alone. this is harassment. i thought modern fandom was supposed to be more progressive than this. c’on, guys. (alsooo, prismo just. isn’t a sexual guy. like at all. when prismo and scarab meet he just seems like hes freaking the hell out the whole time and never stops to check scarab out at all. people are being gaslight by fanart or something lol okay sorry i know people can have headcanons)

another lil thing grudge i have is the whole fanfiction thing. y’all, he made an action based genderbent world. he’s not writing omegaverse smut fanfiction. okay, i get if you wanna headcanon him with that, i think its funny, but like, don’t make him writing fanfiction his whole personality!!!

so yeah, all of the prohibited wish and new characterization of prismo i don’t agree with has made me feel so left out of something that i’ve partaken in for so long. all of this over time has lead me to not be able to enjoy prismo as much. yes, i still love him, and drawing him still brings me immense joy, but it just isn’t the same. i just feel so left out and it really hurts. even if it is laughable, i hope anyone reading this, if anyone at all, could at least understand that bit.

so, TL;DR:

the old prismo fandom was full of different headcanons and theories, different ships, rarepairs even, and all sorts of unique and awesome ideas and art.

the modern one is (mostly) either two things: scarab x prismo or prismo writing smut fanfiction with some other character (but its usually scarab).

and guys. please, please, please. THIS IS MY SUBJECTIVE OPINION! people can headcanon whatever they want and draw whatever they want! i have never, ever harassed anyone who drew something i don’t like. this is honestly my first time opening up about my extremely hot take. it’s not like i’m an ultra petty bully who hates every piece of prohibited wish (my likes are public and you can see that i actually have liked prohibited wish stuff, you can see i have a preference for wholesome tho) please continue to ship what you ship and do whatever you want to prismo and whatever other characters. i’m honestly so scared of getting hate and getting attacked by people. if you read all of this, first of all, thank you SO much, i’m so happy someone actually took the time to hear me out!, and second, you are likely not the problem, and i’m sure i’d love your art of prismo, even if it’s prisxscrabby. just. please, don’t attack me. A: i don’t really know? im probably demisexual. i know that i’m pansexual. but i do ship characters that partake in sexual acts or are lustful towards each other. i personally don’t think that Prismo is a sexual person. i don’t think of him as ace either, i just don’t think of him as someone who often has lustful thoughts.

Q: are you neurodivergent?

A: i think i might be. i have a therapist and we’re working on getting me a diagnoses. she’s very positive that i have autism. we can’t say for sure if i do until i get my diagnoses, though. please keep in mind that my extreme obsession with prismo and my unwelcomeness for change may be the result of my potential autism. but like i said, i haven’t been officially diagnosed and i do not like the idea of self-diagnosing.

okay. im going to talk about the fnaf movie.

SPOILERS UNDER READ MORE!!!

overall, i thought it was very good. somehow making a whole series of a video game condensed into 1.5 hrs is not something easy to do. i think with what they were working with, they executed it pretty well. costume design was superb, and the acting from josh hutcherson was amazing.

that being said, i did find some scenes didn't belong. for example the fort scene, though i'm sure many people have pointed that out already.

i felt like they were trying to tow the line between silly/cute and scary/suspenseful, but in my opinion i don't think they needed to do that? i think if they leaned in fully to the horror aspect it would have still been a very enjoyable experience.

the scenes with vanessa disappointed me, just a bit. it felt like she was only there to progress the story/exposition. and the fucking fort scene with her... in that scene, vanessa is like "oh freddy fazbears' is so fun yayayayay" and then literally in the next scene she's telling mike "if you ever come back here IM GOING TO SHOOT YOU" ???????????? like why? what did mike even do?

the old bf made an observation that william afton was just straight up not fleshed out, at least not as much as either one of us had hoped.

i personally think if they had just included like... a 5 minute scene of william afton on his killing spree (without outright showing william afton), it would have done alot for his character. i felt like he was just kind of thrown in there towards the end, which makes me sad bc william afton is such a unique character with sooo much backstory integral to the lore of fnaf, and it just felt like he was alluded to the whole movie? idk.

there were some questionable moments. it was funny how freddy literally just murders the aunt and no one even questions it? mike would have come home to a literal corpse in his house, how does he explain that to the police?

and it made me sad how little they showed of foxy. :( foxy is my all time favorite (i literally brought a giant stuffed foxy plush with me to the movie) and it felt like he was the most forgotten animatronic. bonnie seemed to be the main center of attention tbh, he was in almost every scene where the animatronics were. but it makes sense since scott cawthon thinks bonnie is the creepiest animatronic lol.

those are my main criticisms.

but i still loved it, very much so!

when the matpat cameo came on screen... it was a shocker. i gasped so loud. the people in the movie theater literally laughed at me lol bc i gasped SO LOUD, I COULDNT HELP IT i was so shocked. AND WHEN HE SAID ITS ONLY A THEORY???? i ate it up. idc if it's cheesy, I ATE IT UP.

also i thought it was cool that the movie is (i think but could be wrong) five nights long! a little easter egg that i thought was neat. the old bf pointed this out to me.

another nice touch is in the beginning of the movie when mike is reading that dream theory book. a good callback to matpat's dream theory on fnaf (you know the one). and it's also a good way to tie in what's currently happening to mike with his dreams in the movie.

i really appreciated the subtle little ways they tied in the movie with the games, like the little "it's me" in the mirror during the scene with mike in the security room. and foxy's humming!!!! i loved it i loved it i loved it! the little noises they used from the game made me so happy!

but yeah. i'll stop ranting bc i can go on forever lol. while it had it's flaws, i don't think they affected the overarching storyline.

i have so many thoughts right now, but if gerudos were real, like, there are so many aspects of their culture that would be way different and its not even just that they dont make sense because the writers didnt properly think about them, they don't make sense because of the explicit desire of the writers to sexualize them and because the assumptions the writers had were so deeply western & christian that they just assumed them to be the default and oughhh i hate it so much

a culture of desert people would not fucking wear silks and expose tons of skin & hair all the time. especially OoT designs make no practical sense? its literally just so that they look hot and the following games kind of kept that design (they didnt appear in a lot of titles afterwards so this wasnt a super established part of the zelda canon, they clearly could have chosen a more practical design for their clothes for botw and totk, but, yk, they didnt)

and like. a society that doesnt really get the concept of "men", Why On Earth would they be monogamous and heteronormative? why would they care about men? like? even if your answer is "for reproduction", why would they strive to be in a *relationship* with a man? like? men arent exactly native to the regions they live in? why would *every* woman hike out to find some dude to date?

and like. i thought it was SO interesting that ganondorf has 2 moms, right? like, even though theyre twin sisters and not a lesbian couple, why WOULDNT a society like that raise children among sisters or friends or as a group, outside of relationships? but the concept never comes up again and they all apparently travel hyrule when they are old enough and look for a husband. (and you know its just like that because they couldnt even *consider* people thinking there was anything gay going on there)

and why would the gerudo make a man their king? thats kinda like if we as a society noticed an intersex person and immediately made them the pope? people usually do not really LIKE people that arent Like Them, and dont just make them their leader? only a person having a very patriarcial worldview (which just DOESNT MAKE SENSE for the gerudo to have) would decide that the only man born would be their leader?

and in every instance where you encounter gerudo talking about men, they clearly see them as weaker than them, like, you see this in so many interactions, that gerudo think of women to be the Stronger Gender, so why does that not apply to male gerudos? like? ganondorf is kind of a Sorcerer Who Has A Sword, so why would a folk of warrior women think of him as inherently superior to them and stronger than them in some way?

why would they even consider one instance of another gender to be something that should be split into a binary and identify it as a different identity than them?? why do the gerudo have a preconceived notion that male gerudos should wear different types of clothes than women??? why does ganondorf have different pronouns??? why do the gerudo have gendered language at all??

and for the newer games specifically, why would the gerudo be so boy-crazy? like, dont get me wrong i genuinely liked that they didnt just make them Tough Mean Women in the new game and allowed them to also be a bit silly and whimsical, but there would have been other ways to do that than making them Literally Obsessed With Men?

i think its fitting that a person who hasnt socialized much with men might be a bit akward and might not know what to say or might not be able to relate to them very well, but then why do they not seem to be bothered by talking to women of other races? i mean, they might be all women but theres probably more reason to be akward around a zora if you never met one than there is reason to be akward around a man if you never met one? does that make sense?

like first of all the fact that ive watched enough of this show to know all the references. and that all these references happened at all and this show happened at all and that i watched most of it and loved it as a teen. its like awe and suprise and nostalgia and sadness and joy and a little bit of mortification but then vindication for having been so passionate about something and enjoying it

second of all the song, im not a massive fan of swift and never really was but shake it off and a lot of her stuff was pretty unavoidable during those years, and i def cant deny this and others are absolute bops and still make me smile and dance... and the message is positive and fun, the way lyrics are changed in the parody mostly fit really well and sound really good so its a song i can enjoy without the context too

and how its like. intentionally combining this... idea of a misogynistic perception of fandom that used to be a lot more prominent, of like the "squeee fangirl" and just being super silly and fun because why the fuck not! and combining it with this show, which is (at least at the start meant to be) more like kinda broody and classically masculine and stuff, and just embracing that combination so genuinely and happily, it was so wonderful to see in 2015 and still so wonderful, and such a fuck you to THA HATERS literally

and just. the production quality is incredible and inspiring, theres so much going on so many scenes and so many meme and culture and show references that bring a smile to my face, the cosplay is wonderful and high quality and makes me want to cosplay spn(really? oh god) for the first time again...

and the fact that they got so many actors and people involved with the show involved!! seeing fancontent aknowledged by "official" sources is still pretty baffling to me sometimes, and it def wasnt as regular in 2015 as it is now to my knowledge, so this was super BIG and awesome back then...

i fell off the latter end of spn, so the only like offical fan depictions and fandom aknowledgements in the series itself i remember are Fan Fiction and the novels and the larper ghostbusters?? or whatever, and those werent always the most sympathetic, or rather made fun of the fandom... which like, parody is fine, spn is a fun meta show, but it did often feel somewhat meanspirited and disapproving, which i understand but dont like. So seeing a fan-MADE parody that is just genuinely celebrating the work AND its fans is such a joy!!!

Pt 1). Intro

Pt. 2 Religion and Plot

- "[...]just dont understand religious ephiphanies [...]" how does having an epiphany about eywa being real make it justafiable to hijack cultural symbolisms and set urself up as the Indigenous leader? Why couldnt Jake accept Eywa or respect Na'vi customs outside of his personal gains (via his avatar body)?

- I think its mischaracterizing to describe Eywa as a god and imply science as too incompataible with spiritualism. Both the Na'vi and the RDA scientists/Grace are right: "Eywa" represents a super organism or metaphysical life force with a massive nueral network that can be literally and spiritually connected to. Eywa is the spiritrual explaination for the natural phenomena of Pandora's evolutionary history of large scale neuro-networks. Grace and Jake having their spiritual epiphanies supplement their scientific or tactile knowledge only after all the destruction they were instrumental to is rlly dubious. Almost feels like poverty tourism or missionary work; why are the Na'vi set up as unfortunate and victimized for the colonizers to have their epiphanies about Eywa's spiritual significance to the Na'vi? What was really keeping the humans from accepting and respecting what the Na'vi already knew about Eywa other than implicit imperial biases ("we know more than you primitives")?

Pt. 3 Ur Metacriticisms are Silly

- it feels like many ppl are simply afraid to have meta conversations about colonialism regarding this movie lol. Avatar is clearly a political film. Its a call to action to a v limited extent but v obviously an allegory. Avatar is a story within itself cuz if its worldbuilding, yes, but metacriticism is inevitable when a white man makes billions from white savior films obscured as celebratory commentary aout Indigenous plight and allyship. The meta is important bc its pretty clear by the writing that its supposed to be, even if the movie is largely a world building, immersive sci-fi spectacle first.

- I rlly dont think argument against white saviorism doesnt hold water at all lol. The dismissal of meta criticisms of what makes avatar a white savior film (including thru its deus ex machinas) is very frustrating. Neytiri saves Jake from Quarirch but Quartich was one agent in the RDA's destruction; Jake was still set up to "save" the Na'vi from the RDA long before that point by being the agent to unite all clans under his particular leadership. The fauna come in as a signal from Eywa to help end the war, yes, but Jake was the only one Eywa used as the catalyst for such scale of influence. Why does "god" herself wait all this time to choose a colonizer of all agents of change (who brought her ppl to their deaths and then makes them legend among them)??? Why not Tsu'tey or Neytiri who were already indigenous, faithfully devoted, and against the RDA? Why did Jake so conveniently get to be chosen AND honored over everyone else? What does it imply about the capabilities and integrity if the Natives if a single colonizer's "ephiphany" was more narratively significant than the Na'vi's original awareness and value of Eywa? These questions to Avatar's many poor narrative implications are what makes avatar a white savior film. It was written that "God" has aency yet coveniently chose the colonizers to be judge jury and executioner on their own terms for personal salvation. Its disgusting!

- JC's writing is basically saying "ur hokey religion wont save u only i can" lol. Bc why else would Eywa choose for a human to be so powerful among her people just to be an instrument to their liberation? JC is implying that human integrity was extremely powerful; that having a change of mind as a human colonizer is what made "god" herself most receptive to aiding her children. But why does the change of mind of one or a few humans matter so much that she makes them leaders and legends? Why wasnt the fervent commitment and bravery of her own children enough to send a tool (in the for of a person and their intel) for them to use themselves? What does being a human driving a body have more in value than being Na'vi for a change of heart to be rewarded so quickly on such a scale than always believingf and asking for help first?

- i think he's being overtly concetious lol. Why does it matter how Avatar is percieved "in a vaccum" in a conversation abt its meta lol? The other commentor is wrong for reducing stories to some mythical "objectve value" in order to defend their position, but op only said he was gonna give him brownie points cuz he wasnt gonna take what they said seriously regardless. So what was the point of such commentary if there was an unwillingness to engage Avatar outside itself? Its frustrating how little he's willing to engage the meta so that he cant say something like "ur right that avatar didnt improve from its original inspirations like Dances with Wolves bc Abatar is only a little less overty white savior-ish, making the film hard to enjoy in and of itself".

- Theyre both basically doing a back n forth about film theory where op is just a devils advocate lol. Its annoying. "Why should a retelling be held to different standards" would be evident if he bothered to consider the meta and Avatar's real world applications.

- Its kinda conflicting how he's saying he hasnt seen any reason to dislike avatar but then says its fine to gague the film's quality by ur own personal metrics (like internal consistency or audience perception). It feels like op just.... doesnt want to engage certain poisitions bc hes made up his mind about what makes a movie and what doesnt, so he doesnt have to engage valid criticisms in and of themselves.

- Ok lemme get this straight (genuinely, cuz im struggling to follow)... op tries writes in a way that doesnt use "framing". Ok...so that means he doesnt want to place value on characters to "play god" bc he admires storytelling that lets a story exist entirely in and of itself. Ok. So he dosnt seem to care for meta criticisms bc he finds plot armor and self awareness in a story to be novel, but ultimately poor foundations for a narrative. Ok. He says using art as an elaborate way to present [an author's] truth to the world doesnt make sense to him. Alright I think this part explicitly reveals his bias and makes everything so far make sense lol. Doesnt make it ok that this is his reasoning for aboiding meta criticisms (instead of just low hanging fruit from random yt commentord lmao) but at least it gives an idyosyncratic reason as for his reluctance that adds more layers to this cracker behavior lol

- A movie isnt a story when it aims to present an underlying truth??? Im not buying this at all lol. Does he rlly not like allegories or parables thid much lol? I rly dont like the christain movie comparison to other allegorical films cuz... it implies that viewing Avatar as a "moral directive" would be indocrination or something? And thered be no artistic value in the movie if it were treated as completely self-referential and vaccuous? Again i think this is just that anti-meta bias showing thru, and also the white reluctance to challenge ur beliefs by analyze the impact of anti-colonial and anti-racist narratives and apply them to ones own thinking.

- Ok sorting his dialouge out again lol: ...he saw a video criticism he thought was valid but refuted it saying he doesnt think a movie's sound track can necessarily or measurably be used for or against a story, and thus Cameron's missed opprotunity to supplement the film's narrative with a new "alien" sound (as opposed to a more conventional western, orcchestral one to highlight the Na'vi's indigenity) wasnt a win or lose for Avatar. I'll sort my thought on that later cuz i feel like Cameron not taking risks like that in his heavily indigenous inspired film was evident of bias and also reflects the nature of consumerism and capitalism (to make a "blockbuster" as recieveable as possible to richer audiences). He doesnt rlly explain why he doesnt think the music choices in a film dont belong in a discussion about writing, which i find strange cuz movie isnt just abt writing anymore, its abt the entire immersive and artistic experience, including the sountrack.

Pt. 4 characters

- "Relevant characters only!!!" Well i genuinely wonder what he thought of AWOW now 💀...

- What he's saying about making characters based on their relevance to the plot's needs (then making their quirks later) is valuable. As of watching this ive kept thid in mind for my own OC making.

- I dont agree w what he said about a romantic relationship having higher highs and lowe lows than friendships. Jake and Neytiri v much could have remained friends and the consequences of their conflicts could have dtill retained their severeity in the narrative because friendship is as powerful as romance and passion. Also it would have been a refreshing take on an indigenous and military relationship that didnt further push a romanticized narratives abt a colonizer courting "the chief's daughter".

- I think he's a bit too plot focused for me lol. He doesnt care that the avatar characters are one dimensional bc their character backgrounds arent relevant to the plot, yet ppl will tell u that a good story has "relevant" characters who feel real because their backstories resonate and inform their descisions and role in the narrative. Jake and other characters felt like tropes personified a lot of times, and the dialouge being very brief (in favor of action sequences) made ppl feel wooden. Sure u need planks for ur house's foundation, but eventually all of them start to look the same when then story's structure is built along. If op cares so much about the in-universe quality of stories, then why doesnt he care about ppl's complaints that Avatar has characters that dont feel real in their own universe? Afterall, Avatar is not based on previous material, the audience is not looking at a snapshot of real history, & the authors had very clear political intentions to necessitate a meta review of the story.

- He's very utilitarian about this plot relevance thing lol. Avatar is supposed to feel as immersive just as its plot is supposed to be coherent and consistent. Its completely new information about the speculative science of a vast planet and alien peoples that hasnt been written before. Having characters or parts of characters depicted as going thru stuff that is tangenital to the plot is immersive and interesting! Ofc u cant spend terribly too much time on it or ur movie will feel incohesive and episodic, but... its still valuable to have characters that supplement a plot in a collateral way rather than a direct way. It makes the world feel bigger than its writing portrays and makes characters feel like theyre part of their world outside the frsme of a narrative rather than tropes superimposed onto a world that only exists as far as the author needs it to be.

- The "exceptional" character jake is in Avatar isnt proportionate to what purpose he seems to serve. He isnt just a rouge jarhead that turns ally, he literally becomes the Na'vi commander, religious legend, and then clan leader for his ephiphanies and delayed allyship.

- I think op is rlly oversimplifying the critique abt the ethics of the Avatar program. Noy even in-uviverse are the ethics of the program questioned, theyre just a given and then a reoccuring theme. The avatars being used as tools is obvious, but also the "just bc we can doesnt mean we should" part of their exidtence is rlly never brought up by any charactor nor any limitations of the avatard themselves. I mean where did the initial Na'vi bio samples for the program come from since avatars are mixture of Na'vi and human DNA? Why does the necessity of the avatar bodies as tools also necessitate that they are permanent sites of escape from human disillusionment and desperation (ex: Jake abandoning his human heslth for hours driving his avatar)? What is the purpose of turning these "tools" into people (clan members, etc) by the end of the film? The ethics of the program go beyond the necessity of tbe RDA and of the plot, and its rather shallow to dismiss criticisms of the program (or even a need for there to be internal criticisms of its operations and existence) just bc theyre "logically" needed for the movie.

So next he talks about why he thinks avatar is good. Looking forward to that since the critcisms were quite bad, imo, and its just nice to hear nice things abt a movie i like from a different perspective. (I'll post those in a different reblog from this since this is long and mostly negative).

Im semi excited for the full Balders Gate 3 release in a month. I have no issue with the divinity style even if some aspects of it, such as the little amount of interesting stuff that comes from leveling up, arent the most exciting. My major concern is the performance side of things. First couple of hours I was fine, able to explore the beginning of the area with a constant 60 fps. Then it just kept dipping and dipping as I played, until I basically got to the end of the ea content barely able to keep a stable 30. With that teaser video they did of the actual Balders Gate city supposedly being massive and detailed, im worried that my computer wont be able to run it at all, let alone at a non eye straining frame rate. We'll see though I guess.

Minor complaints underneath

TLDR: Wish this game looked shittier but played better. I couldnt give two shits how realistic the models or environment if it was just really well tuned. Probably gonna be one of those "Devs bit off more than they could chew" situations that Ill end up getting angry at around the second half, finish, and never play again.

-Ive always hated the spellcasting system of most tabletops. Cast a spell and its gone, if it missed or failed then sucks to be you. Its not a fun idea, and I wish most of the spells were simply made weaker or placed on a cooldown rather than limited. That was what was cool about divinity, if you figured out some really cool combos then you wouldnt have to resort to resting every couple fights just to use them again. Sucks, especially since most stuff is subject to roll rng, so your big lv 3 spellslot ability means nothing cause dipshit beat the dc by chance. Even worse when alot of spells are channeled, so if your character gets hit even once and then proceeds to fail the concentration check the spell fizzles out. Lame shit.

-THE CAMERA. The camera is atrocious, and I dont know what they did differently compared to Divinity 2, but it is a nightmare to control. If you pan too far from your character theres this, like, invisible leash that sudden kills any further movement. It also hates and form of horizontal movement, which means if your character is really high up it wont go down, and if youre trying to look up a cliff it'll just rub the wall.

-The cast is underwhelming. You have a githyanki which is neat, but otherwise its literally two human guys, a half elf, and a vampire elf. Theres not a single dwarf, halfing, gnome, or even a tiefling in the party, which is super lame. They could have easily had a dwarf with the weird magical item hunger problem, or a tiefling vampire wouldve been funny as hell.

-While the variety of extra actions are cool (I cant count how many people Ive killed by shoving them off cliffs or into lava) but theyre really clunky. The environment has so much detail that shoving or shooting in a direction is at massive risk of being just caught on some stray rock or pillar.

-The AI for npcs is still as dumb as it used to be, had a slave get mad at me for shoving its captor into lava. Guys that have never pathed will suddenly turn around out of the blue, even had one person just t-pose and vanish.

-Most of the magical equipment I got wasnt very interesting. Even the adamantite stuff I got after the big fight in the forge was just a debuff on hit. I want silly shit, I want game breaking shit, I want more stuff like those weird tentacle grenades that pull people in.

-Very buggy, and with how big theyre saying the game is gonna be I dont think its any better on release, probably worse actually. I wouldnt have such issues with it if reloading the game didnt take thirty years to complete. Poor Shadowheart made a jump only to glitch out and plummet several stories mid way.

enter hurricane beryl, which is currently just categorized as being a level one though there is some debate on whether it should be upgraded to a higher level

it seems like this is gonna be a changing point, although for better or for worse is still unclear

last sunday is when it finally hit and to be fair it was worse than originally thought it would be, although that is no excuse for what followed and how a multimillion dollar company is trying to act

two million people over the course of the week after have been dealing and likely still are dealing with no electricity, no communication and no idea when their power is coming back, think about that for a minute, over two million in nearly one hundred degree heat and no air conditioning or fans and more importantly no communication and no ability to plan because of this company

if they had given actual real dates or some kind of general estimate then it would have been okay but instead their site was under maintenance for two entire days after, then when it was finally back up their outage map was so inaccurate people started using their apps for whataburger and chicfila because it was a more accurate look at where power was and gave them better estimates than the official map, and then on top of that their outage report was turned off so people couldnt even tell them areas that had been affected

but instead whoever was in charge decided it would be a better idea to have a truck come out to survery the area prolonging the outages for days and have literally thousands of linemen, some from other states sit and wait for entire days and not give them any direction even though in most areas powerlines werent even damaged and just needed a new transformer or something that would only take a day or two at most to fix if not maybe a few hours

instead now a full week after there are still people who are dealing without power around two hundred thousand i believe, but when you look at the numbers i want you to remember its not the actual people but instead the accounts people have meaning it could be twice as many in reality still affected without any clue when it will come back

official statements were also vague and did not give any real information but were only realeased so it seemed like theyre on top of things when in reality centerpoint in this case did everything that you could possibly imagine wrong and worse while millions of people suffered at the hands of their bumbling idiotic greed for money and little intention to act like a real company and have not only left homes without any power but also hospitals and caused the death of many individuals plus countless injuries myself included from fainting and heat exhaustion neither of which i have ever had the misfortune of dealing with before yet have because of this company

news outlets havent said anything worthwile either, not talking about how people are literally dying because of the heat and the failure of centerpoint but instead theres countless articles talking about how silly and quirky using the whataburger map is to track outages because the official thing is so bad, focusing on distracting folks who are currently oblivious to that actual situation so our beloved corporation is protected and preventing anyone who wasnt affected to learn in detail what actually happened because theyre fully aware that if what happened ever reached outside this half of texas there is no chance in hell theyd get away with it

the whitehouse also has done absolutely nothing as there is currently not any basic aid being sent out nor any statement released at least not in ways that are noticable, extreme temperature warnings are the biggest thing issued which wasnt helpful although currently our governor has actually gotten his head out from his ass finally stating investigations should be made into the company and theres talk of lawsuits so i guess stay tuned if theres a petition i will say so and please sign it but at this point i have little hope after decades of this same exact cycle

i know that it might seem trivial in comparison to other things going on but i need repeat i need you to understand this situation is still serious and genuinely a crisis and this is not effort to distract from anything going on but just another thing you should care about because at the moment it feels like nobody actually cares and there are still people in need of help but arent getting it because of the government and the corporation trying as hard as possible to ignore whats happening and please look out for lawsuits or gofundmes of things against them and support if possible because this entire situation is horrible again there are things going on that are worse but this is something you need to also pay attention to if not because of the damage actually done then because it could happen to you too

i guess its time for me to really criticize game mechanics of the new Life series huh

WL is in a weird place because of each episode having a new "gimmick". and the fact no one knows what it is. the snails were silly and i found them funny at first but i was immediately put off by the swift deaths-- why not make people die in 2 hits? 3? the spawn death for bdubs' could've been wait worse if his set up for the bed couldnt get him an out, ya know? thats a concern to consider and im glad it didnt seem to cause a problem for anyone else.

but then you add in ways snails can get hurt and die, while the players themself cant touch them- they can drown. bdubs tried to stop his from drowning and he died because he got too close anyways. multiple people drowned because of them. seems like itd make sense to try and stop players from killing them but they could have just.... made it so snails werent affected by drowning at all????? instead of allowing them to drown and hurt the player???

they put a lot of effort into this mod. the models, animations, the functions generally accounted for everything and they werent able to cheat around the snails. i hate to make the accusation of these snails being made with some marketing intentions but last year's season revolved around a merch period during holiday season and now the series seems to be shifted to this season for good-- but the lack of testing literally anything ever made this just feel like the cute looking gimmick to me and not something good for the actual gameplay for the episode

i mean, nobody got anything done really. bdubs runs around anxiously the entire hour long episode. some people may have managed to do a bit more but the fact is some (many) were caught up in not dying the entire time and that was it. thats not really enjoyable in the end imo, as i look back at the episode i watched and cant say i can point out anything notable when most interactions were just about being scared.

and of course you have all the death. 37?????? three red names, four yellow. skizz killed multiple people but still didnt get to green (and yeah, get to find out they gain a life when they kill so thats neat i guess). i cant say this is the worst balancing until we truly see the gimmicks going forward but this felt not great at the end. getting a life from killing someone else can only do so much with this many deaths, this early in the season. and with examples like skizz, gaining lives isnt a promise to "catch up" this early, due to success rate and chosing who to kill too.

my main issues i think are

1) instant damage, especially in a setting where theyre unaware of what happens so, of course they had no clue to consequence. if it was almost all their hearts they could have time to react and realize for the very start, but still danger enough to scare them

2) the threat was way too big and was a complete distraction from the entire episode for the players, many didnt get anything done and its not great entertainment

3) it lasted for the entire 3 hour session. which again, means it took up the entire episode but bro i cannot imagine trying to deal with that stress for the entire session as a player either lol. it was a bit much to make them deal with for 3 hours.

in general i said from the start i like the idea of gimmicks but ones that force death? never sound good to me. like some of the SL situations, it takes out the actual survival element of the series. theyre no longer surviving, theyre facing a gimmick that expects them to die. and this throws off what feels natural and more satisfying. knowing right off the bat a snail could kill someone made me know thats all this episode would be, and there was nothing they could do about it, and that kinda sucks. and the fact it resulted in 37 deaths kinda spells to me that wasnt good balancing.
