Hey, look at me! I did it. I listened to a new-me-album. I don’t do that very often.
It took me 2.5 years to listen through all the mechs albums and feel like I have spent a good amount of time with each, feel content with them. Reach for them all equally as much (except maybe TtbT2, which is my favorite).
It has taken me 8 months to decide to listen to a second Jessica Law album. Not because I didn’t like Languid Little Lies, but because I absolutely adore it!
I’m just so happy and content to listen to the same stuff all the time that I don’t ever feel the desire to seek out new stuff. That goes for music, podcasts, tv, movies.
I feel a bit bad for not having more knowledge on the other projects mechs members have done and continue to do. I would like to love everyone’s work, it’s just gonna take me years to get through everything sufficiently. But also that means I don’t have to fucking worry if I do come to a point that I’m desperate for something new because there will be something to reach for.
And like, I didn’t like HNOC for quite a while. I continued to listen to it on occasion because I liked everything else I knew by them; didn’t understand why I didn’t have any enjoyment from it. I think it was mainly because I had almost zero knowledge of Arthurian legend. Had to read Gawain and the Green Knight in high school and listened to a retelling of the story where Merlin gets trapped in a cave forever by a lady on Myths and Legends (podcast); didn’t really care at all. Wanted to care (about Arthurian Legend) because I knew that a lot of Celtic myth got fucked up and put in there. So everytime I listened I’d end up reading more about Arthurian legend because I couldn’t remember who was who until finally I understood it well enough that I could actually enjoy everything smart about it and the music itself and trans Mordred and more and more. I didn’t have that issue with OUaTiS or UDaD or TBI because I had knowledge of European fairytales and Greek myth and enough about Norse myth already. Same reason I usually skip Drop Dead, the first song on my favorite mechs album. I just don’t care about it at all, in an ambivalent way. It doesn’t do anything for me. But I also have no experience with Crypt of the Necrodancer. But I listen to it on occasion because there’s nothing wrong with it and maybe this time will be the time it clicks.
#the mechanisms#jessica law#i also have apd and a general processing disability so that likely exacerbated my inability to follow hnoc without knowledge the legends#like i think very very many people will think its silly that i literally couldnt follow the album before that#but my brain doesnt sort information into memory categories well *and* struggles with auditory info#sorry that i couldnt remember that in legend mordred in the son of arthur and morgause. arthurs sister#or who is gawain and who is galahad#i still get those name mixed up but just the names not the characters#i was very good at remembering that lancelot will only fuck arthurs wife though. thats wild in a morally monogamous society#but its also the whole reason when youre with a bunch of people and your introducing yourself youre supposed to give a fun fact#or your favorite color or something#the more info you have to link together. the easier it is to recall.#anyway not sure why im telling yall this#and i really like hnoc now!#do i have concerns about it regarding the fact its a western and the ‘indians’ are cannibals?#yeah absolutely!#do i think consuming the flesh of a human is inherently morally wrong?#no!#comes down to the negative stereotypes against native americans#obviously saxons arent native americans but they are filling that role in the western setting#im sure theres way more to be analyzed regarding that. but i am not the right person for that.#its 1.45 am and i am crocheting a giant millipede#languid little lies#udad#hnoc#ouatis#tbi#the littlest libertine#i guess i havent spent a lot of time with dttm but thats because it songs from other albums#and the versions ive seen didn’t have all the audio so i didnt even get all the death stories

Hmmmmm…. Something something Silver temporarily believing that Flint somehow made the Urca gold disappear vs. Boyd temporarily believing that Ives killed Cleaves and the horses even when they both know that those things are physically impossible for them to have done…
#of course Ives actually DOES have godlike powers due to consuming human flesh and all that#so Boyd is slightly more valid for thinking this#but at the same time - Ives did not in fact kill Cleaves and the horses#so in both cases it’s a false assumption of a godlike feat#I’ve never done black sails/ravenous thinking before this is FUN#they’re VERY different…. The Terror seems to go better with both of them individually than they do with each other#but there’s still some good stuff there#you could probably do something with ‘You’re resisting. Why?’ ‘Because it’s wrong.’ ‘Ah! Morality.’ // ‘Don’t indulge your morals over#your practicals. Not now.’ // Silver angrily arguing against Flint’s plan to feed only some of the men…#of course Black Sails is the only one out of those where someone isn’t explicitly ‘in the wrong’#Ives is just killing people for shits and giggles… The Terror doesn’t present All Cannibalism as inherently morally wrong I don’t think but#Hickey in particular obviously doesn’t care about the well-being of the other mutineers#(and also idk if anyone has said this before but have we considered that he started the cannibalism when he did specifically to ‘channel’#the Tuunbaq before attempting the ritual? like. hmmmmmm…)#in Black Sails it’s just like. Flint is right. I do think he goes too far at times and is REALLY overindulging in the ‘I Am The One Who#Does The Hard Thing That Must Be Done’ as a form of self-harm#but at the same time - it’s a desperate situation that Silver and Billy are just not emotionally equipped to handle#WHICH IS WHY I THINK THAT EXTENDED 3x03 CANNIBALISM AU WOULD BE A REALLY NEAT CONCEPT I AM *JUST* SAYING-#you know this post wasn’t originally about cannibalism…#how does this ALWAYS happen?????

OK SO “IS CANNIBALISM IMMORAL”
Short answer: It depends
Long answer: There are two reasons people generally consider cannibalism to be a bad thing. 1. It’s gross. 2. Killing and eating people is a bad thing cus people don’t want it to happen to them.
Regarding 1. “It’s gross so it’s bad” is generally, on it’s own, not a good reason to think something is immoral. There are perfectly valid reasons why the act itself is taboo (health risks, for example, but then, isn’t being able to risk one’s own health a fundamental freedom we all enjoy? I do smoke), but taboo =/= immoral and people equate the two far too often. But like. It’s just eating.
Regarding 2. Yes killing and eating people is a bad thing generally. But it’s not the eating people bit that makes it bad! It’s the murder! Look at cases of survival cannibalism for example. If you eat someone who happens to die, is that bad? Nah, not really. The handful of charges brought following survival cannibalism have been in cases where a murder occurred, not where the death was by natural causes. A lot of the kneejerk reaction comes from how heavily associated cannibalism is with murder, but they’re not the same. Even legal experts may tell you that cannibalism is illegal in X place, because murder is illegal, therefore cannibalism must be. But that’s actually rarely the case. Cannibalism in general is only ever punished where death occurs.
So if you remove death from the equation, what’s left?
A pretty legal but gross activity is what’s left.
“But cannibalism still bad!” Ok let’s go over some examples and think carefully about if those things are actually immoral.
So, survival cannibalism. Most people can agree that if necessary, it’s acceptable, right? so in that case, cannibalism = good.
What about as part of funeral rights? Put aside your disgust for a moment and try and see it from the perspective of the cultures that do it. The Fore people consume their loved ones as a means to stay close to them. It’s their afterlife, they *literally* live on through their loved ones. (Yes kuru is a concern, but some minor alterations to how it’s done, leaving out brain matter, would have solved that, plus many people have genes that protect against those prions anyway). For the Wari’ people, it is an act of compassion. There really is no way to be closer to someone than to consume them, and no one is harmed if that person is already dead. If you take out the taboo many cultures have around cannibalism, it’s easy to see why people do it. It’s rather sweet, really. So in this case, cannibalism = good
Some cultures have however practiced cannibalism against their enemies, presumably without consent. I guess I don’t have to explain why in that case cannibalism = bad?
Obviously creepy ass serial killers who eat people are also bad when they are eating people. They didn’t ask. They aren’t doing it for good reasons.
What about Rick Gibson, who ate some tonsils and a slice of testicle in public in England? Iirc there were some charges brought against him, but none specifically for the cannibalism, only because he did it in public. The body parts were donated, so he harmed no one by having them and eating them. Of course grossing people out like that is questionable so I’ll say this one is neutral.
What about all the new parents who eat their placentas? That’s cannibalism. Specifically autocannibalism. I’ll be honest, I find that more repulsive than a lot of other cases of cannibalism, but the motivations really are wonderful. Parents willing to do THAT for health reasons. Placentas are fucking gross why would you do that. But that sounds pretty good, no?
A little more debateable here, but what about hypothetical cases where someone consents to the non-lethal removal and consumption of part of their body? IMO, it’s extreme, yes, but I see bodily autonomy as a fundamental right, and assuming that someone understands the consequences, I see no reason to say they can’t do it. (but then, I also see the right to cause harm to oneself as part of bodily autonomy. Others disagree, for perfectly good reasons. Like I say, this one is pretty debatable, but it’s obviously not on the level of going around murdering and eating people willy-nilly)
Even more debateable here, what about people who consent to being killed and eaten??? (I’m not gonna say right or wrong here AT ALL cus that’s one you could argue all day about but personally I’m still very much in the “let people do what they want with themselves camp”)
Ultimately, I think the best way to approach the issue of “is cannibalism moral/ok/whatever” is much the same way most progressive people approach sex stuff. Is everyone involved old enough to make these decisions? Are they informed of the consequences? Do they want to do it? If yes, have fun! If not, you’re a criminal! But despite it being taboo, there is nothing inherent in eating human flesh that makes it morally wrong. It’s how you go about getting that flesh in your mouth.

The Art of Storytelling - Truth in Fiction
[During the upcoming weeks, I’ll be taking Neil Gaiman’s class on the Art of Storytelling, available on MasterClass - a fitting birthday present. I’ve decided to use my Tumblr site to post the assignments, which I hope will keep me motivated. It is not like I can send them to the Master himself. Bear in mind, those are exercises. Real opinion pieces would require much more research, and I am no journalist.]
Read an essay, write your opinion about it, and “show too much of yourself.”
The essay chosen for this assignment is Consider the Lobster by David Foster Wallace.
I am not familiar with this author. I’ve known for a while he exists, in the landscape of American Literature, but I had never taken a particular interest. A few months ago, I heard him being discussed on a podcast by four queer writers and they made me curious, even though it was not enough to prompt me to look him up. But now, since one of his essays is in the list provided for this writing exercise, I figured it was as good an occasion as any.
In this essay, Foster Wallace recounts a lobster festival in Maine he was meant to cover as a journalist. The piece starts by being very descriptive of the event and slowly moves into more reflective territories, by becoming a piece questioning eating habits and the cruelty inherent in killing animals for the nutrition and taste they provide.
Foster Wallace doesn’t advocate for veganism – I don’t know if the man himself was – but rather asks questions. At the end of the essay, he does say he asks them because he has a sense of discomfort about the topic, and also states his hope that the piece isn’t too preachy. Which effectively defeats the purpose, I’d say. If you worry about being preachy, I’d argue it is because you already know you are.
I do believe the piece to be preachy. By just asking questions, Foster Wallace effectively puts them to his readers without providing even the beginning of an answer, however weak the latter could be. As a person, it disturbs me. It is a very valid method to question phenomena, but to do so without reaching a conclusion feels like a work half done.
There are valid reasons to question a system that disregards the cruelty inflicted upon other beings perceived as weaker than us. It is also very valid to look at a food event which effectively rests and relies on the killing of thousands of animal for mere entertainment and festivities. That is the perfect illustration of a capitalistic system that view human beings as simple consumers – at best, when it is not a source of cheap labor – and anything else as a common property for grab which sole purpose is to provide an opportunity for profit.
But Foster Wallace doesn’t take that road. Rather, he puts the focus on the individuals, the people coming to the festival, the gourmet and the mortals who dare cook the lobster in their own kitchen, keeping the issue wrapped around itself, not looking beyond it.
I will say this – reading the article, I felt uncomfortable. When he describes the process by which a lobster is put to boil and when I read the details put forth to illustrate the unwillingness of the animal to be boiled, fighting against it, I felt the queasiness in my stomach. It hit close to home because a couple of days ago, I argued with the Viking about the exact same issue. We had talked about going to the restaurant and eat lobsters, because in doing so, a higher step would be reached, a certain standard of living would be achieved. Lobster as a marker for social mobility. When you can afford lobster, you’re moving up in the world, another notion I have no space to dive into here.
The discussion turned into an argument, because we also talked about buying the lobster in the shop and cooking it ourselves, and I did question his willingness and ability to kill the animal. He argued that he didn’t have a problem with the killing as such, but rather about the means, to wit, boiling. That feels inhumane to him, more so that killing a cow in a slaughterhouse because in there, certain standards are applied – I don’t think the Viking has ever watched a video in a slaughterhouses, witness accounts abound to show that there is nothing humane about killing cows, pigs, and chicken one after the other, on a perversion of the (dis-)assembly lane established by Ford, more than a hundred years ago. And to me, it didn’t make sense, establishing a distinction between ourselves, as a couple of individuals living in a city and outsourcing the production of all the food we eat, and the rest of the food industry. Questioning one action when it is only a tiny piece in a much grander system that needs to change as a whole, it felt wrong and misguided and this is why we fought.
If you take part in a problematic system, without actually getting your hands dirty, aren’t your part of the problem? I believe that to be true, I believe it is called complicity.
I am complicit. It is a uncomfortable notion, one I push aside, one I’d rather not examine because if I did, I would actually have to stop and look at what part in the system I play, and I would fall apart, I wouldn’t be able to carry on with my day, I wouldn’t be able to earn the money I need to earn to buy the food I need to function and be a contributing member of society, whatever this latest notion means to each and every one of us. So I have pushed the ugly outside, content to make it disappear in the slaughterhouses and the industrial fishing boats, because I cannot look at it. If I did, my whole life would crumble.
So what is left to do for us, the Viking and I? We could decide not to buy the lobster, but I don’t think that would accomplish anything. We could go to the restaurant and outsource the whole killing and cooking process, and just enjoy the nutriments put in our plates, forgetting that the lump of flesh was once a living creature.
Or we could go out and find a fish shop, talk with the sales person who would have, let’s hope so, been recently at the seaside, to look at the load of individual fishing boat coming back with the tides, to carefully choose which pieces they decide to sell in their shop. We would choose the lobster we want, take it home, plunge the knife in its head and drop it in the boiling water with the herbs and salt. But we wouldn’t go away. We’d stay for the whole process, how uncomfortable it’d make us, fully acknowledging the cost – financial and moral – of doing so. This time, we wouldn’t put the ugly aside, we’d look right at it, and see how it’d make us feel.
And above anything, we wouldn’t put the mental load of killing an animal that we would be eating on another human being. That pain and sense of wrong and disgust with ourselves would be ours to carry.
And maybe – maybe? – that would be the last time we’d enjoy lobster together.
[I don’t know if I fulfilled the assignment, if I “showed too much of myself.” What I know is that I was deeply uncomfortable writing this, putting words onto unformed thoughts that I didn’t wish to contemplate.]

Morality and Meat
In regards to the ethical consideration consuming meat, it is important that we identify the animals whose death is necessary to produce our meat (therefore we will not consider animals who may suffer similar treatment as these meat producing animals, because they can potentially continue to live their life) and their capacity for sentience and pain. Internationally the variegation of animals of whose flesh we can potentially eat from is quite abundant, ranging from alpacas to alligators, but for the sake of this essay I’ve chosen to isolate a few, more culturally commonplace in consumption and in likelihood to inducted into factory farming (in America), animals to analyze: pigs, cows and chickens. Pigs have been documented as being intelligent, emotional and show signs of complex cognition, which implies them having sentience. In respect to the abilities of emotional cognition in pigs, Marc Beckoff references a study from "Thinking Pigs: A Comparative Review of Cognition, Emotion, and Personality in Sus domesticus." in which
“naïve test pigs were exposed to pen mates who had been trained to anticipate upcoming rewarding events or aversive events. When the naïve pigs were placed in the company of the trained pigs they adopted the same emotional anticipatory behaviors as the trained pigs with the direct experience.”
This study demonstrates that not only can pigs empathize with the emotional and behavioral propensities of other pigs, but that they can competently use predicative cognition to respond emotionally to the anticipation of the future. Pigs are capable of thinking socially, playing with others, sensing their environment, being curious, learning skills, perceiving time, being spatial aware, memorizing information, having self-awareness/personality and being complex intellectually. Given that pigs express such a high aptitude of intellectual comprehension of their environment, it is no surprise that their ability to suffer pain is far more complex than a simple physical sensation and be the result of negative emotional interactions or the recollection of a negative stimulus given certain circumstances(Beckoff). Cows, like pigs, have an abundance of scholarly literature supporting their abilities to perceive their environment intelligently. Cows can be pessimistic or optimistic dependent on experience, solve puzzles and then show signs of excitement for being able to control their future rather than simply fulfilling a biological function, and even discriminate between people who have treated them “roughly” (although I should note that this skill could be skewered by the color of the clothing the person was wearing). Although it isn’t known whether or not cows have self-awareness, we do know that cows-like pigs- can feel a variety of pains that don’t limit themselves at the physiological threshold(Hugo). On a similar note, when asked during an interview whether chicken and turkeys feel pain, Dr. Ian Duncan, Professor of Poultry Ethology at the University of Guelph, responded:
“Absolutely. It is indisputable that poultry are capable of feeling pain. All poultry species are sentient vertebrates and all the available evidence shows that they have a very similar range of feelings as mammalian species. Poultry can suffer by feeling pain, fear and stress.”
In this same interview, he noted the public’s tendency to underestimate the intelligence of these animals and the fact that they exhibit distinctive personalities(Ducan). John Raphael’s article “Who You Calling Bird-Brained” corroborates this, as well as speaks to chickens possessing the ability to communicate through both gestures and 24 specific vocalizations, understand ordinality and use deductive reasoning(Raphael). In 2011 a study that observed hens observing their chicks experience a mild negative stimulus (an air puff directed at them) triggered a physiological and behavioral response indicative of  “one of the essential underpinning attributes of ‘empathy’”(Edgar).
After we have established the depths of which these animals can experience sentience and pain, we should consider the ways in which they are used to produce meat. The most widespread form of producing meat in the US is through the use of factory farming. Factory farming is a large scale industrial process in which a farm raises select animals in surplus quantities in order to produce the most amount of food with the least amount of cost deficit, which means working with Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) or having some kind of feed management, and possibly choosing to supply animals with certain hormones or antibiotics. In order to save on costs factory farms’ pack animals in confined areas that allow for disease to be easier communicable, physical and psychological stress that sometimes lead deformities to develop and an overall lifestyle that is deprived of dignity. Another factor considered when trying to maximize production with the least funds is how animals are fed unhealthy food, which causes digestive discomfort, alongside being pumped up with antibiotics and hormones in order to increase production mass. In order to prevent infighting amongst animals and the spread of disease farmers often engage in needlessly painful practices such as debeaking chickens, dehorning cows and tail docking both pigs and cows. Not only is factory farming harmful to the animals that endure it, but it also has a negative impact on the consumers whose reliance on meat can be exploited by the few large companies, tolerance to antibiotic-resistant microbes can be hazardous to their health, and environment is taking a significant toll with 37% of methane production, 2.4 billion tons of CO2 and hundreds of thousands of gallons of water being wasted, coming from factory farming. Free-range farming mitigates these major issues by providing healthier alternatives in food, environment, treatment and general aspects of lifestyle. Although free-range farming may surmount factory farming in the circumstances it provides for its animals, both ultimately see animals as means to an end and slaughter them through stun gunning, hanging or cutting (all of which cause great pain within the animals subjected to them)(Martin, Gallego, and Scruggs). Now that we have set the precedent for understanding animal sentience, pain and the means in which to convert them into meat, we can examine the questions, is eating meat, factory farming and some people eating meat while others do not, ethical from multiple philosophical perspectives. Let us first interpret what these questions mean in the context of Aristotelian virtue ethics. Virtue ethics being contingent mainly on individual character achieving eudaimonia rather than consequences or rules surrounding an act, will not supply us with an absolute answer on whether we should eat meat. However, it is of considerable value to realize that the ultimate goal of virtue ethics is achieving eudaimonia which means “human flourishing” and Aristotle even states in Politics that:
“It is evident then that we may conclude… that plants are created for the sake of animals, and animals for the sake of men... for our use and provision; the wild, at least the greater part... As nature therefore makes nothing either imperfect or in vain,...she has made all these things for men”(Aristotle).
Therefore the consumption of animals has no inherent detriment attached and only becomes wrong for some people to eat meat if it isn’t done in moderation or is an act that isn’t ruled by wisdom. One can argue that by eating animals one isn’t promoting the flourishing of their humanizing attributes because animals display certain characteristic that we identify as being “human-like” or intelligent. To this Aristotle would argue, because animals cannot reason at the same degree as we do and because hunting, factory farming and then as a result eating animals relies on a wisdom ruling process, that eating animals is in fact actually a humanizing attribute. Therefore according to virtue ethics eating meat, factory farming and the notion of eating meat not being applied consistently to all people are all morally permissible. Kant in a similar fashion as Aristotle, also rejects the idea that animals cannot fathom the world as deeply as man and are only to serve man stating on the matter: “Animals are not self-conscious and are there merely as a means to an end.  The end is man.”. So one may assume that Kant like Aristotle would find eating meat and factory farming both morally permissible, but it is necessary to descry this quote using the context that it was not common knowledge during the 1700s that animals had the degree of sentience we now know them to have. Our duty towards animals, according to Kant, is as follows: “If any acts of animals are analogous to human acts and spring from the same principles, we have duties towards the animals because thus we cultivate the corresponding duties towards human beings.”. Observing animals empathize with each other, experience emotional pain, and demonstrate the ability to react emotionally to future events, dictates that we must act with compassion towards animals, not out of direct obligation towards the animals themselves, but to our fellow human beings. On this matter Kant furthermore states:
“If he is not to stifle his own feelings, he must practice kindness towards animals, for he who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men.  We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals...Vivisectionists, who use living animals for their experiments, certainly act cruelly, although their aim is praiseworthy, and they can justify their cruelty, since animals must be regarded as man’s instruments; but any such cruelty for sport cannot be justified.”. In this quotation the answers to the questions of whether eating meat or factory farming is morally permissible comes from the interpretation of two phrases “aim is praiseworthy” and “cruelty for sport”. If one’s “aim is praiseworthy” then they are justified in enacting cruelty on animals. So do the conditions of cruelty that factory farms provide have a “praiseworthy” outcome? Generally we assume they do, because they provide a surplus of food for large masses of people, who to Kant have the utmost consideration in the matter, but is the cruelty inflicted on the animals “cruelty for sport” what about eating meat in general? In this essay I will take the phrase “for sport” to mean an action taken that is both not necessary and done with enjoyment. I believe both factory farming and eating meat can both easily fall under that category in today’s society. Obviously eating meat is not necessary as evidenced by the growing population of vegetarians and vegans in the world and the choice to eat meat is one that is done with a certain sense of enjoyment. Although those who chose to eat meat may not actively think about how their enjoyment of consuming meat means the enjoyment of cruelty towards animals it still remains. An example of the cognitive dissonance people have with enjoying meat, but not the means in which it took to create it can be embodied by my mother. My mom very much enjoys eating all kinds of meat, it’s an important part of her lifestyle and culture, but when someone reminds her the thing she is eating once was alive or what means were necessary in order to produce it she either can no longer eat the meat or makes a conscious effort to disassociate those thoughts completely. So if one is completely naive to the fact that animals suffer in order to create meat products does this make them immune to the moral obligation of not engaging in “cruelty for sport”? Hypothetical yes, but realistically the vast majority of people who eat meat understand that there was cruelty involved in the creation of the product that they are consuming. Because the aim of factory farming is to feed people who enjoy unnecessary (there is no medical need for anyone to eat meat) cruelty towards animals, factory farming unlike we assumed early is actually not morally permissible, nor anyone eating meat. Unlike virtue ethics and kantianism, utilitarianism considers all beings on equal footing. Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill and Henry Sidgwick were all early proponents in the establishment of utilitarianism as a philosophical theory and all of them argued on behalf of counting non-human entities towards sum total of happiness. Utilitarianism relies on the Greatest Happiness Principle (GHP) which states that actions are right to the extent that they promote happiness; wrong to the extent that they promote the opposite of happiness. Factory farming and eating meat as we have settled above cause more distress to the animals involved in order to be outweighed by the pleasure from those who consume them and therefore are not morally permissible. Hypothetical if there was a way in which the death of a few animals could be outweighed by the overwhelming delight of hundreds of people than we could justify eating meat, but realistically no matter how tantalizing a piece of meat, the satisfaction of its consumption could not outweigh a lifetime of suffering. Personally, when it comes to adopting a stance on whether it is morally permissible for some people to eat meat, while other don’t, I find that my believes are a confluence of both virtue ethics and kantianism in the sense that necessity is defined by one’s pursuit of eudaimonia. “Cruelty for sport” in my opinion is alway morally impermissible, because it inherently promotes the disregard of dignity towards something, and what it relies on is the act itself being unnecessary. What is ‘unnecessary’ is not only whatever doesn’t draw from your basic needs (water, sustenance, shelter, etc.), but whatever does not align with your personal maxims which aim to achieve eudaimonia. What I believe separates us from animals is not our strong genetics (if so why shouldn’t aliens with stronger DNA eat us) nor intelligence (if so why shouldn’t we eat babies), but our ability to conceive constructs of morality. Our ability to perceive, interpret and fully immerse ourselves within ethics is what makes the choices of a human being so valuable. As human beings we give the world meaning and therefore choose whether or not the death of animal is morally meaningful and why it is not so. Being human we can also make choices that act against our instinct of self preservation and interest in order to follow suit with our ethical constructs, which is a trait that we don’t yet have enough evidence in present in animals. Even the emotional complexity of animals as cited above could be “ a case of over-interpretation and personification” where “authors anthropomorphize the animals, or compared them to humans when they shouldn’t have”(Hugo). Personally I am a vegetarian, because I find the death of animals for my seeking of eudaimonia unnecessary and believe that because the products they produce that can be acquired through means that don’t make suffering necessary, I am justified in eating cheese, eggs and drinking milk.

The civilizations we venerate will all fall
In the end, and with them, the decadent
Ideas that they upheld in their rotten times...
The strong are not the be-all, end-all,
For the strong have no claim to anything
By virtue of mere physical brute force,
As there are no inherent "rights",
And they, too, are governed by
Inane concepts that are decidedly idiotic,
Another way of "morality",
Arrogant enough to believe
That their ideas are universal, and are thus
No better than the underlings they
Take pleasure in brutalizing...
No one, nothing, has any power over I,
Or anything else, and to accept this narrative
Is to be a laughable fool, making themselves
But mere tools to a hand that guides,
Or rather, strangles, willingly; to yield
To the idea of being a "weakling",
And to accept that you are not in control
Of yourself, and possess no strength,
Just cowardice, and that power
Descending from another, superior "will"
Is a "just" and "righteous" concept,
When clearly it is the root of mediocrity
And the result of stupidity; these are the
Types who deny life, for they deny reality,
And are not lovers of beauty and truth,
Perfectly content with being pushed around
Or pulled around by a ball and chain...
The way forward, the "world of tomorrow",
Is not our friend, our savior, our path
To redemption and salvation that we crave...
The "help" you receive, want, champion
As humane, and just, is little more than the
Current system trying to prop itself up,
So that it may secretly, covertly, erode
Your humanity, until all that remains
Is a husk that has merged both flesh and steel...
The gear-driven gods you worship,
Make altars for, proselytize yourselves
Before, shall be the death of all things
Great, noble, pure, true, and wondrous,
And contrary to what is believed at large,
Pathways to freedom do not lie in their care...
Dreadful and wicked totalism
Appeared the day when one must
Be bowed to, some "almighty" figurehead...
"More" comes from within, not from
Outside, and those who say otherwise
Clearly are the ones who only participate
In satisfying urges for shinier and shinier
"Things", and should be ridiculed
With great prejudice, as they are
Devoid of values or beliefs,
No concept of aesthetics or spirituality,
Lacking desire for rebellion or subversiveness,
Unimaginative, uncreative, boring dullards
Who see only value in mark ups
And nothing else; dunces of the highest order...
A desire for "something else",
Somewhere beyond here, will be
Your undoing, my undoing,
And the decay of all; look what
This mentality has wrought
All through the ages...
We are not all the same,
Differences do exist between us all,
And praise and love should not be
Doled out equally, carelessly,
Frivously, dished out like the air
We take into our lungs,
For then the value of these things
Drops significantly; equality is
Absurd, a humorous concept,
A quaint little amusement,
But not at all a "reality",
And is, in fact, quite the exact opposite,
Since nature clearly did not make us,
Create us, to all be carbon copies...
Yet, this is not to be despaired about,
Nay, this only adds to the art of life,
The wonder and color of the painting
That the lovely Mother has decorated the
Canvas of our world with; and those
Who take advantage of this
For darker, more nihilistic tendencies,
Are not "aristocrats of the soul",
Despite claims to the title,
And are little better than
Abrahamics who shy away
In the face of the universe,
Running away from the cosmos,
Unable to withstand all that
Is being presented to them,
Suffering from broken minds,
And becoming reactionaries...
To reify concepts of a wholly "scientific" kind,
Concerned with just factual ruminations
And adhering dogmatically to logic and reason,
Has done nothing but drive us towards
An age lacking in character, in spirit,
And thus, in real time, we shall see
The soul dissipate and disintegrate...
The shedding of this "light" upon the
Collective whole of humanity, these
Rays descending from the sky, through
The clouds, that had come to touch
Our hearts and minds, was not a gift,
But a curse, for look where it got us today...
You are not "free" merely because you
Utter the word over and over
So feverently and passionately
In the context of your life; phantoms still
Haunt your mind aplenty, possessing
Your mind, body, soul, and heart, like
Demons from the books of the Judeo texts,
As when I gaze upon thee, I do not see
A free man at all, for you couldn't even
Tell me what freedom looked like,
Or how to act it out; your definition
In regard to the "freedom" you adopt
Is one peddled by degenerate bourgeois,
The aristocrats you become aroused at,
And this, to me, is no freedom at all; better
Men have recognized this truth many times over...
Humanity is not the center of all things,
Nor separate from all things,
As we are all part of the whole
That makes up the ecosystems,
And the biosphere, and all other
Components that comprise what
We call the natural world; we are not
Superior to it, and we hold no command over it,
Like we constantly decree, in all of our
Hubris and pride; we are not masters of
Mother Nature, and we do not deserve to be,
As Nature has her own will, one that shall
Always be free from attempts to dominate her,
Much to our frustrated, haughty chagrin; her
Embodiment of freedom, and the fact that,
At the end of the day, we must follow her will,
Her free spirit the measure of greatness,
Makes us envious, and jealous; that is why
Ecocide runs rampant, and some of us
Want to foolishly kill off our mother...
The greatness that emerges from humanity,
Bursts of heroism that spring forth,
These notions are the works of
Individuals, for we look up to great men
And women; this is not born from an admiration
Of collectives, of groups; humans are best
When they are independent, self-reliant,
Free and true to who they are, and their wishes,
Rather than rendered "less than" by
Populist notions where they are herded
Like sheep by shepherds; their potentials
Are hampered, stifled, and stagnancy
Reigns when the individual is forced
To sacrifice themselves into the all-consuming
Void that is "the group", "the collective",
Where beauty and virtue and the admirable
Go to die, being swallowed up by
An all-consuming maw, a black hole,
A rot that made humanity unable to
Live like Mother Nature, and fully emulate her,
Or, rather, follow her example as closely as possible...
All you hold as dear and precious,
That which you prostrate yourself before,
Holding higher than yourself and your own,
Bending over to be sodomized by,
Is, in fact, not real, but utterly baseless,
Fictions of your mind trying to process
The world around you, the natural world,
As well as so-called "realities"
Being beaten into you, day in and day out,
Only an amalgamation of falsehoods
Conjured up by your feeble brain; there is
No universal "right way" or "wrong way",
My friend; there's no overarching fact
That pervades all, and permeates everything,
And if you think so, then you are a simpleton,
For there is only my way, and yours...
These are the atavistic ways...

Would it be weird to have a main character in a story that eats pretty much exclusively humans? They're not human themselves, and anything else they can eat is too rare to rely on. I'm just not sure how to keep them likable when they've straight-up murdered people to consume their flesh
i mean thats a tricky matter of what you’re going for
you can make a character a murderous cannibal and still have them be likeable
lad russo (while not a cannibal) from baccano spends almost all of his screen time committing mass murder and cackling like nobodies business and he is a TREASURE and a delight of a character
but he’s eons away from being a morally good character/person
its very hard to make a character come across as good when they  consume another sapient being on the regular to survive, even if they themselves are not human
if your character has a humanish way of thinking or morals, its very hard to see them as a good person in this context. having to eat human meat is one thing, having to kill humans to get it is another. depending on the story’s setting, there are ways they can get that meat without killing someone. someone who chooses to kill when they have other options, simply because its easier, does not come across as a good individual.
(this is why many of the ghouls in tokyo ghoul -at least in the amount i read of it- piss me the holy hell off. b/c being given and option b/t murder and alternative methods, many of them still choose murder, and the narrative treats them as good and kind despite this.)
you could make your character be so inhuman that they have a way of thinking/morality that is completely incomparable to humans, it makes a bit more sense for them to read as “good” while still being, well, a homicidal maneater. id compare this to, idk, Moro from princess mononoke
(who we know blatantly from her own mouth has eaten humans, though she does not do so exclusively, and while she isnt a Heroic character per say, you can’t really call her Evil or Bad anymore than you can most of the characters in that film and she’s certainly very likeable)
the problem THERE is that if you frame it wrong, it can come across as a very heartless mindset of “humans are disposable”, which will always make your story take on a very cynical, “humans are cattle and unimportant/inherently bad/weak” tone, which is irritating, overdone and frankly depressing and frustrating (ex: THE VAST MAJORITY OF VAMPIRE FICTION WHICH IS WHY I DETEST MOST VAMPIRE FICTION ALKFKLDFSDF)
you could also have your character eat some humans without issue but still like, be fond of, or appreciate other humans, which can avoid the “humans are cattle” trope and also give you the chance to explore the very clear cognitive dissonance your character is dealing with (”these humans are my friends and they’re different than the humans i eat haha b/c i try not think about the humans i eat haha”)
you could go the route of your character only consuming humans when they lose control as well, which usually involves a lot of guilt, angst, and self loathing, but at least makes your character very sympathetic
theres not really any right or wrong way to do it and it all boils down to your person preference, and how you set the stage, tone, narrative, etc
NOW if you’re just worried about your character being likeable but you dont give a rats ass about them being a good person, you dont gotta worry about it haha
im not sure how coherent this was so feel free to ask me to clarify anything if you need me too

Architectural Steps Involved In Designing House Plans
Are Veganism and Vegetarianism Symptomatic of Eating Disorders? Over the last 12 months, a large quantity of clients have informed that scientific professionals suggest them that that their lifestyles and consuming choices are tantamount to mental illness and should be categorised as eating problems. Their desire to no longer consume any animal products or limit their consumption to non-flesh based totally content material is considered as severe and a reaction to disturbances in their psychological wellness. As a psychologist, I want to deal with these issues each to the clients and scientific professionals.Firstly, it is critical to understand what vegetarianism and veganism is. Vegetarianism is the exercise of no longer eating flesh-based products of animals i.E. Meat, fish or bird, despite the fact that some humans nonetheless call themselves vegetarian however devour fish. Choices are regularly made on the basis of ideals approximately fitness or cruelty in farming practices or meat production. The former belief is primarily based on the information that a person is healthier in the event that they do no longer consume meat, fish or chook although they pick to eat animal bi-merchandise like milk or eggs. The latter notion is related to cruelty issues surrounding the treatment of animals in animal agriculture. These  notion sets do now not always go collectively for the vegetarian; someone may also limit their consumption of animal products in the pursuit of stepped forward health while not having precise concern for the welfare of animals concerned.Veganism alternatively is a philosophy that it is unacceptable to use or exploit animals in any manner. Decisions to observe a vegan weight-reduction plan may not be philosophically pushed but adopted on the basis of progressed health. Strictly this isn't always vegan but just like the philosophy led vegan, the character does now not devour any animal products. The proper definition of vegan is primarily based on ethics; that it is inherently wrong to use or make the most animals i.E. Eat, put on, be entertained by means of or use any pharmaceutical products which have been tested on animals etc. The moral vegan is someone who has been impacted via veganism in this sort of manner that they are either intellectually outraged or have skilled severe pain on the realisation of how animals are handled in commercial manufacturing. It is these individuals who are much more likely to are seeking mental support, since they generally reveal signs of anxiety, depression, PTSD, panic assaults, suicidality or paranoia. When an character seeks out the help of a skilled professional, they regularly record signs and symptoms which can be labelled as constituting a mental sickness or, as I pick to mention, mental misery. When they're requested, they continually say that they have adopted a vegan lifestyle, which, to the non-vegan scientific professional, is probably seen as excessive. Upon nearer exam, I consider that the experiences mentioned by vegans are so disturbing and extra to do with the know-how and awareness that has come into their lifestyles in preference to their life-style selections being defence mechanisms or techniques to keep away from feeling suppressed psychic ache. What do vegans know?A character who adopts an ethical vegan life-style has emerge as aware about the good sized and inherent cruelty and social injustice of the economic use of animals in our society, whether or not in food manufacturing, the enjoyment enterprise or checking out of merchandise for human use. The commercial exploitation of animals is based totally on thinking about animals to be belongings and, in an try to maximise income, charges are reduced which means pain discount isn't always a part of the equation. This means that animals raised for meals especially aren't afforded the identical prison protection as domestic animals. The vegan is traumatised by means of this consciousness and frequently feels powerless to have their ideals taken severely or impact exchange quickly or at all. However, their trauma goes deeper than this. They have become privy to a gross injustice and speciesism inherent in this business gadget. When they are trying to proportion this with others, they're frequently pilloried as being too sensitive or advocated to accept that 'It is regular to consume animals' or 'if things have been that awful, they could in no way be allowed'. This intensifies their pain and feelings of isolation as different human beings frequently emerge as uncomfortable with the information they percentage and the mission to their personal values. These repeated reviews motive the individual to alienate their pals or own family, similarly intensifying their misery. In an attempt to advantage a few level of stability and remedy from their pain, they searching for out the offerings of a psychologist or psychiatrist. For people to be informed that their dietary picks are severe and represent ingesting issues, paranoia or melancholy is, in my opinion, the medical profession missing some thing very crucial about the determinants their mental distress. To have their misery minimised or trivialised, is pronounced with the aid of many clients as a form of violence or additional abuse. This effects in a complicated grief response with unresolved previous grief being re-experienced. In an try to alleviate their in addition sense of mental ache, anger and resentment, they often preserve on extra tightly to their moral vegan behaviours. It is these reported behaviours that result in experts regularly assuming that their selected techniques defined via their ingesting and life-style choices are a function of intellectual illness. It is my opinion that, instead of being symptoms of intellectual disorders, they're a characteristic of mental readability, mental well being, accelerated, levels of empathy and compassion. How are those welcome psychological developments abruptly being categorized as constituting mental disorders?Challenging the status quoI accept as true with that 'If all we have is a hammer, each hassle becomes a nail'. It is all too smooth for a professional to see an man or woman's behaviour thru the slender lens of scientific labelling and faced with signs and symptoms of non-common eating behaviour label them as extraordinary. We have visible this in different non-ordinary life-style picks like homosexuality which became most effective tremendously currently eliminated from the list of mental problems. Additionally, veganism challenges anybody (including the expert) to observe his or her own speciesism and human superiority. Speciesism is the term used to give an explanation for why distinct animals are afforded specific remedy e.G. Why we are horrified by means of cruelty to dogs and cats but be given or do not query the slaughter of different animals for food or as the recipients of testing. It can be the uncomfortable feelings skilled by the observer that outcomes in denial or rejection of the injustice. However, this is unhelpful at the least and abusive at worst for the expert to categorise an individual's attitudes and behavior as ordinary in an try and unconsciously keep away from experiencing their own pain inherent of their very own speciesism or entitled superiority afforded really due to the fact they are human.I encourage vegan clients to seek out the assist of others vegans to help them on their adventure. If their signs are acute, searching out a vegan psychologist or counsellor who can empathise with the inherent demanding situations of this lifestyle might most in all likelihood be beneficial. However, at the same time as the psychologist might be vegan, do remember that you can simplest work via your ache if you believe and feature rapport with the expert. If this doesn't exist, no amount of shared philosophical viewpoint will help you figure thru your demanding situations.I inspire clinical practitioners, psychologists and counsellors to realize that the consuming and way of life alternatives of the vegan are not signs of ingesting problems. This is a cost-based judgment primarily based on norms in society and such beside the point labelling can compound the struggling of the customer and be a form of superiority over animals - this time, over different human beings. Choosing The Best Quality Garments Improves Your Wardrobe
Fashion is an ever-changing world. Fashion is exactly what you make it and there are various ways to find the newset trends and fashions. Keep reading to get great tips on improving your fashion sense.
If you are going directly from work to an evening out on the town, take a few makeup basics with you to change your look. Consider darker lipstick and some smoky eye shadow to transform your look. You may also darken your blush a bit, providing some contour for darker time. These three products will ease the transition.
You should always own a white blouse in your basic wardrobe. You can wear practically any color bottom to match. Pair it with slacks for a casual look for work. Wear a full skirt for times when you are going out for a nice dinner. Wear jeans with it for an active look.
A great way to help you look your best is to keep a good stock of button down white cotton shirts. This is important because not only do they go with many different other pieces, they are also safe for nearly every occasion and extremely easy to take care of.
On days when you aren't feeling your best, a nice, big pair of stylish sunglasses can be your best friend. If you did not get enough sleep, the night before or are ill, a pair of sunglasses will cover your sickly-looking eyes and add mystery and added style to your ensemble.
If you find a classic skirt, linen shirt or pair of jeans that fits you perfectly and makes you look and feel fabulous, buy two of them. Designers make their money by making changes every year so that customers will buy new items each season. You may not ever be able to replace that beloved item that gives you so much pleasure and confidence.
Don't seek perfection, as far as fashion goes. First of all, no one in this world is perfect. Second, any attempt for perfection sends the signal that you are trying way too hard. You will often see looks that celebrities wear, which include some sort of "flaw" that is strategically worn to accent the look.
When traveling, take clothes that are neutral so that you have no problem matching them together into a number of outfits. Your options are varied without worrying about how things will look together. Accessories will take the look from day to night, if necessary.
Many are under the impression that fashion only pertains to clothes. However, a hair style is also an important part of an outfit. Investing the time, money and effort to achieve a great head of hair, impeccably styled, is necessary so that your crowning glory compliments your fashion choices.
Don't make fashion impulse buys. When you buy on impulse, you often make bad choices. The clothing may not fit as well as you hoped, or it doesn't truly work with anything in your closet. Before making the buy ask yourself if you really need it, and if you have items that can compliment it.
Buy outfits that promote an hour-glass figure. No matter what the decade, that feminine outline is classic and always fashionable. This is why actresses like Marilyn Monroe are still considered beautiful even with the new model trend toward long and lanky women. Curves are always in as it implies femininity and fertility.
Pick top or bottom to accentuate sexily, but never both. The line between looking sexy and looking trashy can be very thin; however, this rule of thumb should suffice. When you accentuate your upper or lower body, keep the other half stylish, yet conservative. Bear in mind, this rule applies to men or women.
Try not to feel bad if someone makes a negative comment about how you dress. Try to stick to your style and not those of celebrities. All you really need to do is be confident and comfortable in how you appear. Sooner or later, you'll attract the people that like your style.

Being Fashionable And Presentable Starts With These Ideas!
If you haven't focused much on current styles in the past, going shopping is often a difficult experience. Mehandi Designs  If you have been on multiple shopping trips where you feel uncomfortable then you might require some assistance. Thankfully, this article will give you fashion that will help make it simpler to shop.
Fashions are constantly changing, so look for some basic items of clothing that you can add to and create a new look. A great fitting pair of black pants are the basic look you can dress up or dress down, as well as wear in summer or during the winter months.
If you have very dry skin, you may want to apply moisturizer before using your favorite scented products. Doing this will help the cologne or perfume stay longer on your body. It will work best if you use an unscented moisturizer, so the smells don't compete or create a new, unexpected scent.
Don't buy clothes just because they're on sale. Remember, no dress or other clothing item out there is ever worth purchasing unless it fits your fashion sense perfectly and accentuates your body. It will just remain in your wardrobe as a reminder that you wasted money.
Wear black jeans with a dressy top and high heels for a classy look. Wear colored jeans if you want a more casual look.
Take advantage of the summer fashion season. The summer is the most open season when it comes to fashion. There are very few colors that are frowned upon, and the style options are usually endless. Wear the craziest colors and funkiest styles that you can think of while you can. When it comes to smear fashion, anything is possible.
The basic black dress is essential for any woman's wardrobe. You can wear this dress for casual occasions by accessorizing it with a pair of comfortable pumps. You can wear the same dress for a more formal occasion if you put up your hair and accessorize with a pearl necklace and earrings.
If you notice your hair frizzing when it is dry, try applying just a little leave-in conditioner from the top to the bottom of your hair follicles. If your hair is very curly, use a serum instead and start around the middle of your hair rather than at the crown. These tactics will help to smooth things out and help you to look your best.
The color of your skin should determine what color clothing you should wear. If you are very pale, avoid colors that will make you appear paler, like beiges, yellows and whites. On the other hand, if you have darker skin, lighter colors, like light blues, pinks and yellows will compliment your skin.
If you like form fitting clothing, it is very important to know what materials and colors blend together, and will hold their form the best. This is significant because if you get the wrong blend, not only the outfit will possibly go out of shape, but it might be uncomfortable as well.
If you have a few extra pounds on your frame, avoid horizontal stripes. This pattern can place extra emphasis on your body's width, as it draws the eye across your body. Therefore, you should select a vertical pattern that puts emphasis on your height rather than your width.
You can't go wrong with a pair of shades. If you have had a rough, sleepless night, or you just don't feel like putting on makeup, shades can be your best friend. By wearing them, you can hide your puffy eyes, and they always add some style for any event.
Do not be afraid to be unique. Although high school beats into our heads that everyone should be the same, the truth is that being unique is vital for success in any area. Lady Gaga is a prime example. Uniqueness is a good thing. You should never try to hide it.
Use mousse to give thinner hair more volume, but make sure that you do not overdo it. A lot of people are starting to revert to the 80s with their hair, but the fact of the matter is that hair back then wasn't that fashionable really.
Keep a few pairs of classic shoes in traditional colors on hand. Having fun with the varying styles that shoes come in is recommended, but is always nice to have a pair of shoes that can go with almost any dress or pantsuit. Do not avoid changing trends, yet keep classic accessories in your wardrobe as well.
Go out there and search for your next pair of outfits now that you know a thing or two about fashion. Take what you've just learned to heart, and create a look you will be proud of. Soon, you'll look great and feel even better.

Death be not strange.
So this is a thing I wrote for a media assignment on the horror genre.
Warnings: Horror, gore.
The human fear response fascinates me. The dilated pupils, the body shaking with anticipation, their brain trying to predict what I’ll do next and failing. Once a person is in my sights, they have no chance of survival.
First off, let me tell you the story of Jonathan Taylor, an average man, at best. I first met him when he ordered a flat white from the café I work at. Jonathan was tall, with a bit of fat round the middle, perfect for roasting. He paid more attention to his phone than his surroundings, making him an easy target. Jonathan, stupidly, decided to walk into the alleyway next to the café. And whilst he scrolled through Twitter, I beat him to death with a coffee pot. The one downside of killing people in broad daylight, is trying to get them back to my apartment without raising suspicion. But everybody has tricks up their sleeves, or just good biceps.
Once back at my apartment, Jonathan loses a lot more than just his clothes. Peeling the skin off a body is just as simple as peeling an orange. Except with blood instead of juice and more time consuming. Once skinned and useless appendages are given to my dog, it’s time for the cooking process. Most people like me prefer to eat humans raw, but I’m a sucker for a good long roast in a marinade. The thigh is, in my opinion, the tastiest part of the human body. Slow cooked for three hours and served with a glass of red, is the way to go. A full human body can last me about a week’s worth of meals, before more meat is needed. While I get my fix of human meat, my dog gets to chow down on bones. In all honesty, Jonathan was a disappointment. When I cut into him, I discovered that he had a shoulder replacement and no one wants to eat metal alloys. It’s like picking bones out of a fish dish. It makes the entire dining experience a bit of a hassle. It also increases the clean-up job, which is usually just disposing of clothes. So, Jonathan Taylor, an average man, at best, was an average meal too.
I haven’t been eating people for very long, but in my ten months of cannibalism, I have found that men are a significantly better feed than women. Breasts, although nice to look at, are just a big chunk of fat. No one wants their meals to arrive with a big lump of fat connected to the meat. Don’t even get me started on breasts implants. Large amounts of fat on food is awful, but trust me when I say, that a balloon of silicon turning up on your plate is worse.
I think it’s safe to say that I never intended to kill people and eat them to survive, but some lifestyles you just stumble into. When there is no food, and it looks like there won’t be food anytime soon, the insatiable hunger consumes you. And getting a meal is all a person can think about. The mere thought of food is enough to stop muscles aching. When you’re indescribably hungry, nothing will stop you getting your next meal. It’s an addiction, worse than any drug or adrenaline rush. I’ve gone a week without a meal and my body can’t handle it. You start to shake uncontrollably; my skin gets stretched tautly over my bones and starts to turn grey and ashy. Though the physical changes to my body are awful, the mental changes are worse. You lose all sense of reality, of humanity. You lose your moral codes. You will risk everything to get a single, fleeting bite of fresh warm flesh. Hannibal Lector got cannibalism wrong, there is nothing strangely beautiful about eating human flesh. You do it to survive. In life, everything comes down to an inherent desire to live. You do what you have to, even if it means killing people for food. Some may say that makes me a monster. They’d be right.
Contrary to popular belief, it is rarely a dark stormy night when I stalk or kill my prey. I like to see the sunlight reflect off their bodies whilst I open them. I want to see every wrinkle, every indent, every stretchmark that my dinner has. Human flesh is beautiful, but what’s underneath is truly exquisite. I learnt more about the human body’s muscles, tendons and inner working by dissecting them, than going to biology class. Speaking of biology class, that is where I happened upon my next meal. Most people despise group assignments at university, and I don’t blame them, but I have found them to be a good source of food. Because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to kill someone after completing a group assignment? For the record, I try to kill the person who does the least amount of work. Geoff never turned up to meetings and my group was half convinced he didn’t actually exist. We were shocked when he walked into the classroom for the presentation, I decided that he was my next meal.
Do you ever get the feeling that someone is watching you, following you? Geoff certainty did. There is something enjoyable about playing with your food before eating it. I relish making my meat paranoid, making them fear the unknown, making them scared of turning around, just in case I’m there. Geoff was already paranoid, possibly due to the large amounts of marijuana I later found in his house. I observed as he looked out into the street before going inside and locking the door. Such a shame that locks can’t keep me out. I scaled the side of his house, and sat on the roof. I could hear cartoons blaring from the TV, the smell of Cheetos wafted up to me, within the haze of marijuana stench. Despite the loud cartoons and awful stink, the sound of his heart beating and the smell of his skin draws me in. I shimmy off the roof and kick open a window on the top floor. Geoff is so high at this point that he doesn’t notice. I make my way down the stairs towards my next meal. He does not notice when I enter the room. Eventually he sees my reflection in the TV, after mumbling something about me not being real he runs out of his house. Geoff is surprisingly quick, for a guy high on drugs. But even the fast humans are no match for my speed and strength. Unlike in horror films, he doesn’t trip over. Instead he runs straight into a traffic light pole, in doing this, he was kind enough to knock himself unconscious. Allowing me to easily pick him up and run him to my own apartment, without being seen by the general public.
It’s strange how peaceful a person can look when they are knocked unconscious. All the muscles in the face relax and you instantly look younger. It looks like they don’t have a care in the world and in that moment, they don’t. When you wake up, that’s when you start to worry. It takes time for people to register the fact that they are in danger. Geoff, in his concussed and still slightly high state took even longer than most. I find that it is best to prolong death, to ensure that the meat is fresh, a process that I’m sure Geoff will not enjoy. I prefer to remove each limb, one at a time. Then, attempt to keep the human alive through a series of sedatives and IV drips. Large amounts of screaming can cause neighbours to call the cops and explaining a partially dead person on the couch is not easy. Next, I strip the skin off the meat, which is a surprisingly lengthy process. Then I cut any fat off the meat, unless it will help with the cooking. Then I’ll let the leg, usually, to sit in a marinade whilst I deal with other parts of the body. When it comes to a human body, every part can be used for something. Liver, intestines, brains anything can be cooked up and eaten, if you know a good recipe and have a good storage system. Storage of all this meat is extremely important. A big freezer, whilst expensive, is crucial to keeping things from going off. When I first starting eating humans I didn’t take enough care with keeping my meats frozen and let me tell you that food poisoning is not pleasant and can be particularly violent.
While Geoff’s leg is marinating, I start to shake, not a good sign. It has been too long since my last feed. I look in a mirror and see my skin turn translucent and grey. My hair is practically ejected from my scalp and my skin is pulled tight against my skull and bones. My vision blurs and adjusts making the lights in my house hurt my eyes. I shut them tightly and fumble to find the light switch. After failing to turn off the painfully bright lights, I throw a punch to where the light switch should be. The lights go out and I remove my hand from the hole I made. I hear a whimpering coming from the corner and turn to see my dog shaking about as much as I am. The scent of human flesh enters my nostrils and consumes my thoughts. I race over to the couch, pushing furniture out of my way, to get to where Geoff is lying unconscious. I rip open his ribcage with ease and stuff as much muscle, meat, lungs, whatever I can get my hands on in my mouth. I inhale as much of Geoff’s body as I can, eating every last bit of skin, bone, intestine. My only thought is about getting the human flesh inside me. When Geoff’s body has been devoured, I am still not satisfied. I bolt into the kitchen and tear the freezer door off its hinges. Luckily there are a few left-over pieces of someone, that I was going to feed to the dog. I scoff them down and exceedingly slowly the curse starts to back off. My skin grows plump and warm, my hair grows back and my eyes are now attempting to adjust to the darkness of my apartment. I get up off my kitchen floor and look for a torch. I eventually find my phone and use it to survey the damage. My couch is torn is half, there is the hole in the wall, my freezer door just lying on the ground and Geoff’s blood covering a decent proportion of the apartment.
It was foolish of me to go too long without a meal, I could have revealed the curse’s existence. As far as humans are concerned vampires and werewolves are fiction. I thought they were for a long time, but then I was trapped. Trapped in an elevator of all places, for six days. Humans can only survive three days without food and water. After the other people in the elevator died, I ate them to keep myself alive. In doing so, I was cursed and discovered that every nightmarish creature that you can read about is real. They live among us, silently to protect themselves. Quietly feeding off the humans that are forgotten, the homeless and the runaways.
When a human consumes another human’s flesh they become cursed, cursed by the Wendigo. If we don’t keep feeding on human flesh then we become uncontrollable monsters. But other than that, it’s a manageable condition.
