It’s time for Nicky Hemmick appreciation hours!

I think out of the foxes, I really don’t like the way Nora developed, or lack thereof, Nicky’s character.

He was one of the few POC/LGBTQIAP+ characters in the books and the way he was written just wasn’t it, y’know?

I think out of all the changes we could have, I wish Nora developed him better because his character could’ve gone to so many potentials. 

But let’s get with what we have-

First off, I just want to say I appreciate Nicky’s relationship with Erik so much.

They’re adorable. 

Now, let’s get to the sad and dark stuff-

Nicky’s past is one of the most messed-up backstories I’ve ever read in my entire life. And I read a LOT of sad books.

Dude literally went to a gay conversion camp (the fact that this shit exists is proof that hell is just a place on earth) for a year and had to repress his sexuality his entire life because his parents were homophobic shitholes.

Repressing his sexuality also led to depression. He had freaking suicidal thoughts and he took the first way out of his problems and saved himself by taking the first chance to leave, aka Germany.

I’m not sure if anyone remembers but to get to that- he had to pretend he was something he was not. He had to play the “perfect son” role because he couldn’t afford to be himself in a place where his existence was deemed wrong.

Also, the fact that he had the capacity to do this- to maintain that role until that Germany ticket landed in his hands while combatting suicidal and other morbid thoughts-

Kid, that sucks. Nicky Hemmick needs a hug.

Also, taking note of this fact makes me appreciate his reactions towards his teammates’ tragedies more.

Like at first I was constantly surprised because I thought it’s such an overreaction to feel sad and almost cry as a reflex to other’s misfortunes (lowkey exposing myself here) 

But to realize he went through such a traumatic experience and can still empathize + sympathize deeply with his teammates-

it just makes me really appreciate that aspect of him- to be able to still be that person and have that sense of humanity despite of the horrific things he went though, that’s amazing.

Let’s talk about the fact that Nicky could’ve just live his entire life in Germany with the love of his life and cut off entirely his connections with his family because he had every right to detoxify his life and live happily for himself.

Nicky was about 19-20ish when he learned that Tilda had died and how he reacted to this by going back because he doesn’t want the twins to be raised by the same people who gave him hell- because he knows the twins deserves better- that’s incredible.

He had absolutely no obligation to, he wasn’t even that old to have that responsibility but he took it.

He came back and fought for the rights to become a guardian for the twins (against his own parents), like that takes so much time and effort and the fact that he did it at like a considerably young age is just so mind-blowing.

I’m not going to act like he’s the best guardian. But let’s not discredit where credit is due.

Despite everything- he gave Aaron and Andrew a home. Provided a roof over their heads, helped them at school (he taught them to speak German), worked jobs to provide for their basic necessities, and assuming Andrew spent all that insurance money on the car, someone has to be working to pay the tuition and bills, right?

And that someone was Nicky. 

(He also got Andrew and Aaron gigs at where he worked at).

Like no one talks about this enough but Nicky lowkey raised the twins. Like, he actually raised the twins.

There is not enough words in this world to describe how overwhelming and amazing that is. 

He had no obligation whatsoever to these two who probably gave him a hard time because as much as I love the Twinyards- they were assholes (I mean they were kind of mean to him for crying out loud, and that’s just on the books- imagine how much more he got back when the twins were probably so distrustful of him) and really, they weren’t Nicky’s obligation because most people forget that Nicky wasn’t that old. 

He was pretty young too. 

And by going back, he’s associating himself with the things that lowkey broke him but he still went and stayed anyway even when he could’ve easily just be happy and cut it all off because despite of everything, he wanted to provide the twins with an at least better option than his horrible parents.

He wanted the twins to have a good life- literally wished for them to heal and be okay and succeed and that amount of love- it’s just amazing. Like, I said that a lot by now but it’s just really amazing.

Nicky Hemmick is amazing.

He was also supposedly only going to stay until the twins finished high school but then Coach Wymack happened and with Erik’s support and his hopes of the twins being happy, he stayed.

I’m not sure about Nicky’s exy abilities, I think he got scolded a lot by Kevin but I like to think that he wasn’t that bad. I really wish we got more exy contents, that one time I got invested in a sport and there wasn’t even a lot of it. 

I also like to believe that he’s more mature than he lets on. Like, he actually knows all that adulting shit.

Also, when Neil noticed that Nicky is just playing his energy levels up to compensate for the Twinyards’ walls because despite everything, he wants to be friends with everyone but can’t because he’s with the monsters and that honestly sucks.

But it’s also commendable that he really tries. 

Ignoring the Eden incident aside, he was actually really great to Neil.

Like, he’s one of the few in the foxes that was friendly to him at the start. 

He also taught him a lot of things (like social cues and all) and did whatever he can to help him.

He’s actually a pretty good friend. 

Also, I lowkey feel for him that despite everything, he still wanted his parents’ validation and approval.

I saw a decent amount of people hate Nicky for this because it was what led to the thanksgiving incident, but I just find it sad.

Because at the end of the day, Nicky was just a son who loved his parents even if they couldn’t love everything he was and the things he stands for, and it’s just sad because even if it was kind of obvious, he just wanted to believe that everything could still mend.

He still wanted to be accepted by them.

Some people don’t deserve to have kids.

But when he realized that it wasn’t going to happen and this brought harm to the twins, he was very apologetic over it and guilty even if it wasn’t his fault, and he chose the twins.

He will always choose the twins. 

"It's about family. Not necessarily the one we were born with, but the one we choose. This one. The people we trust to be part of our lives. The people we care about."

Overall, it’s just really amazing that despite everything, he can look for the positive and enjoy life even if it’s really shitty.

Vegemite. Neil won’t have it on anything unless theres a lot of avocado involved. He tells the Foxes its best eaten by itself. Gives them each a spoon with Vegemite on it, gives himself one and cringes internally putting it in his mouth, but had to make it believable that it was the best thing his ever had. The Foxes all coughed and gagged trying it.

The one time Neil met a kangaroo, he got in a fight with it. Mary recorded the encounter. Later she had to prevent Neil from running it over with their car, not because she was trying to save the kangaroo, but because a crash with a kangaroo would land them both in hospital or kill them.

Neil’s motto when it comes to animals that could potentially kill him, “If an Irwin can do it, so can I.”

He swears a lot; “that little fucking fuck decided he wanted to fucking be a dick and took a fucking shit on my shoe when i wasn’t fucking looking! I hate ducks, like what the fuck!”

Wymack doesn’t let Neil do press duty unless he promises not to say the word fuck or any other swear. Neil physically struggles and ends up swearing in a whole other language, being banned from press duty once Wyamck got a translation of what he said.

First night at Edens and the Monsters lose him in the first second. Andrew had his back to Neil for a moment on their way to the bar, when he turned around the guy was nowhere to be seen. He was found later talking to strangers, a friend group, and they were treating each other like old friends who hadn’t seen each other in months. Mentioned strangers almost fought Nicky when they came across him assaulting Neil later that night. Neil went home with them, he was drugged and his new friends didn’t trust the people Neil came with. They took him back to Palmetto the next day when they were sober. Got maccas on the way back. Aussies are quick to make friends and are very welcoming to most.

Neil treats everything like its nothing. The Raven drills? Hard sure, but his pretty laid back about it which pisses Kevin off to no end. “Why aren’t you taking this seriously?!” Is met with an amused look. “But I am.”

He pronounces words differently thanks to his accent, its not heavy but its not subtle either. Andrew bites his tongue from correcting him. Allison and Matt try to have Neil pronounce it their way. Aaron and Seth mock the way he says things. Nicky, Dan and Renee just move along with the conversation.

Nathan is Australian. I’m comparing Nathan to Katherine Knight, only he gets away with it. That poor family…but I’m only comparing because Katherine was also a butcher.

Neil doesn’t realise that he has to pay when it comes to healthcare in the US until he does something stupid for fun and ends up injured, which leads to the hospital. One of the many things he doesn’t like in the US, if it weren’t for the amounts of money he had, he would have just changed identity and left.

Coffee. It’s not until he tries the coffee that he regrets coming to the US and immediately wants to go back to Australia. He makes his own coffee in the dorms and has to experiment until he somewhat replicates the coffee he loved.

You know the scene that was incredibly gay between Kevin and Neil like near every scene between them? Neil actually knows how it looks from outside POV and cracks jokes about it. On the Kathy show especially. The second Riko comes on set, Neil is laying the jokes on thick to direct Kevin’s attention off of Riko and onto him. Stealing the show, which pisses Riko off and leaves Neil satisfied.

He watches someone of the opposite team get injured, because of something he did, and shrugs it off. “She’ll be right.” A saying directed at anyone and any object regardless of gender.

Gets asked all these questions about Australia and bullshits every answer, especially if it’s Nicky asking.

Kevin and Neil start dating, but because of all the previous jokes Neil made about them, everyone thinks its a joke that Neil somehow dragged Kevin into. Even the media. Neil’s jokes about him and Kevin were doubted by many, besides fans who had spotted the duo when they were by themselves away from the media and team.

Neil’s went to the Ravens for two reasons. One you know so I won’t bother, and the other was to annoy Riko. Laying his accent on thick when the pair were in the room together and pissed him off like he had Kevin. Doing hard work but behaving like it was nothing. That Riko’s attempts to torture him was nothing.

Neil has a pet dingo, and a snake. The snake he still had, he had to save her from the Foxes when they first saw her and tried to go straight for the kill. She hung around his neck as he lectured them. Thankful that he wasn’t able to bring his dingo…jokes, he did. He was staying with Abby, since Wymack refused to take care of him. Abby thought he was just your average dog.

Anyway yeah, Kevin, Riko and Neil still knew each other as children. Only Kevin and Riko visited Australia to see Nathan butcher a guy. This plays into Kevin figuring out who Neil is pretty quickly because who else does he know that’s Australian, with a dark sense of humour, makes jokes about the Butcher of Baltimore and a case about him butchering a man and feeding the guy to his kids. A guy whose mum was British. That and he walked in on Neil dyeing his roots and putting the contacts in.

Yknow how Aussies are said to put shrimps on the barbie? yeah, someone says this to Neil in attempt to get along with him. An hour later Neil comes back with a barbie doll and some shrimp, sat the doll down and delicately put the shrimp on it.

Aussie Neil makes friends real fast, one word from him and the other person is treating him like they were friends who hadn’t seen each other in months. The time at Eden’s was different, he was pulled into the group because they noticed his hair was dyed and loved it, another asked where he got his contacts from. Just full compliments from them and Neil told them not to tell a soul since his friends from school haven’t noticed yet.

Wymack didn’t have to deal with book Neil when Aussie Neil appeared and slept on his couch. Aussie Neil was very talkative and cracked jokes whenever Wymack saw him. “what are you doing?” “everything but you” a wink and Neil was being kicked out for the day “mate, no need to be so butt hurt over a joke”

“I’m fine” is still said many times that it annoys people when he says it. But he also repeatedly said “mate” which the Foxes slowly picked up gave hints to how he felt about certain things. “mate” would mean his annoyed. “mate” would mean his exhausted. “mate” would be a subtle fuck off. “mate” would mean his excited. “mate” would be awkward. there was many “mate” being said

anyway, I’m Aussie born and raised, I don’t know anything about the stereotype and kinda just mixed in what I did know and what happens in my day to day life. the mate thing, i feel like only an aussie would understand ? fr idk, not sure about it

Katherine Knight? search her up, I did an assignment on her for my english class back when I was in school (I picked her, teacher just wanted a random essay and podcast for whatever we wanted it to be on) and fuck that bitch was crazy, gotta write something similar about that case for Nathan
