Vapourwave

“Sticking down your leaves on grass, and I don't know just where we've got to go”

In a few of these essays, I’ve mentioned Shoegaze, a genre I’m not too familiar with, but what I know of it, I quite like. I once saw a post on Reddit that was a picture of My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, with the caption “what the hell, this is just vapourwave for boomers”. It was a pretty funny post, and whoever posted it definitely made it as a joke, but is there any truth in what they said? Can vapourwave be described as the successor to shoegaze? I don’t think so, but there certainly are some similarities between the two genres.

First of all, they were both popularised by a single album each, as opposed to a gradual movement. Shoegaze was popularised by My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, whereas Vapourwave was popularised by Vektroid’s Floral Shoppe (which she released under the alias Macintosh Plus). Both albums featured album art that would go on to exemplify the aesthetic of the genre. Loveless featured a guitar barely visible under a pink haze covering it, symbolising how the indistinct from each other the instruments heard are. Floral Shoppe a pink computer generated background, with Japanese text and an overall 90s aesthetic, save for the roman bust in the foreground. However, Shoegaze didn’t last very long. It was very quickly replaced with the rising Britpop in the UK championed by bands like Oasis and Blur, and grunge in the US by bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Vapourwave is still going strong today, 9 years after its inception.

While the influence of shoegaze can still be heard today in a few genres such as noise rock, dream pop, and ironically vapourwave, it is nowhere near as influential as vapourwave itself. Vapourwave is still a genre on its own, but it’s also worked its way into many other musical niches, particularly under the indie and lo-fi scenes. For example, a lot of people, myself included, sometimes turn to a livestream of lo-fi hip hop beats when they need to focus during studying, or just to relax. I’m actually listening to it as I type this. However, there is a clear element derived from vapourwave in the sound of it, and that’s because it’s such a diverse genre, not to mention the clear influence it has on modern art pop like Superorganism, Tame Impala, and St. Vincent’s recent music.

The stereotype of vapourwave is just the opposite of nightcore. A song that has been slowed down, rather than sped up. This is partly accurate, the most famous vapourwave song is 420 by Macintosh Plus, which is derived from the Diana Ross cover of It’s Your Move by Doug Parkinson. It wasn’t just slowed down though, parts of the songs were moved around and repeated, and overall the song is far more sinister than it would otherwise sound were it just slowed down. This is not the only way vapourwave can be made, though; Teen Pregnancy by Blank Banshee does feature a sample from a couple of songs by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five as well as a song by Boards of Canada. The song is mostly original however, and the most obvious sample is dialogue from the show Degrassi Junior High. Another example of a song that doesn’t conform to the sampling stereotype would be Beach walk by Whitewoods, a vapourwave song that features no sampling whatsoever. As well as this, Macintosh Plus’s brand of vapourwave is decidedly anti-capitalist, hence the 90s aesthetic. She is referencing elements of a bygone era, and claiming that capitalism in itself is an outdated idea. However, Saint Pepsi’s (you read that right) brand of vapourwave goes in completely in the opposite direction, using the same images to celebrate capitalism and consumerism.

Vapourwave isn’t just music, it’s an entire cultural movement. Other genres may have their own aesthetic, such as punk with the crazy colourful hair, and metal with the black clothes and long hair, but vapourwave is a genre of art as well. I really recommend you visit the subreddit r/VapourwaveArt, it’s full of beautiful art inspired by the vapourwave aesthetic, lots of 90s images and clean colours with roman busts and dolphins and pretty much anything strange and unusual, but not sinister, to offset the tone of much of the music. Because of how strangely rooted in other genres of music it is, as well as its versatility as a genre itself, PLUS its art movement and distinctive aesthetic, I don’t think we can expect vapourwave to be going away anytime soon.

hello it is once again time for my end of the year wrap up. this should be... interesting

january

finally finally got to have a happy apartment experience!!!!! tried out tea drops which are dope. there was a fair amount of stress revolving around APO induction and the musical rehearsal, but we made it!!! partied hardy (the infamous tess in the washing machine incident) kelli was watching always sunny more often than not. i wore some arguably bad clothing but ya know. gays. we tried to take off my closet door (it did NOT work). the beginning of the goose saga! there was a sleet storm so kelli and i made some popcorn and watched mike birbiglia’s new special. darci, kelli and i went out to eat and then ended up in babcock playing air hockey before watching videos with kai who was on duty. PEP BAND???? some good memories formed there. dogs in the library! got bullied by my library boss to put gas in my car and i sent her a video of proof that i did it “daddy long legs” “stop. what?” “the musical” (i do love timothy) i actually practiced my instrument lol wild. WE (becky, celeste, timothy and i) WATCHED SPIRIT and got wildly drunk -- the origin of “[redacted] [redacted] who???” which is my favorite joke.

MORE PEP BAND im actually really glad i spent my last few college months dicking around with the band. one man drumline!!! kai made some good tiktoks in our apartment! miss hanging with them it was really fun. oh i hung out with sam and celeste watching movies “he was a boy, she was a dolphin, can i make it anymore [strangled dolphin noises]” OUR MICROWAVE HANDLE BROKE OFF while kelli was gone man that entire apartment was falling apart (hey dumbass grab from top) -- a list of things that were broken in our apartment: fridge light, front entry light, showerhead, phone. the birth of the beans insta!!!! got hit on when i was at taco bell with timothy by being accused of being trans (taco bell guy was not far off to be fair). oh the improv posters as compared to the posters i built for an organization fair. went out and got daRUNK at what appears to be wandas. really struggled with my period. cut hair with kelli n darci. MOZZ STICKS. “you still a lil bitch???” oh we did kpy pal-entines!!! where we ate good food and watched the princess bride!!! i received the plush goose. there was a possible bombing at the bank next door to where we rehearsed for band. aw i went on a tommy’s date with becky that was cute. they tried to STEAL the QUESO. disagreed with a curb and still have those scars. worked a horrible gig at the theatre. closing shifts at the library baby! middle school tours EW more library dogs! fish hooks song oh my god. drunk mash nights!!! i rewatched HAVEN and had lots of feelings. actually got drunk alone a lot which was Bad. however michael malloys birthday! watched choir concert at work lol. stats final whilst drunk!!!! becky got a piercing

here things go downhill rapidly. hit up the trains at least once. oh late library nights with timothy!!!! the best nights i miss hanging with him while at work. struggled with my car. went on a college sponsored adventure to a back alley farm. SCURVY FEARS. opening shifts that were lonely. oh celeste played plague and named it covid and won lol yikes. the infamous apartment cone. we stayed up long enough to see the sunrise on literally the last day in college I would ever have. that was good. I FOUND OUT KELLI HAD GLASSES im still pissed. came home indefinitely. went to st patty’s day at brookes with karrigan and that was SO much fun (this was before things seemed real) the best part of that was the irish pub owner who happened to have a son that went to my college. got my mom onto tik tok. took a gay lit class. can’t believe i took daily fckn walks around the pasture who was i. hosted virtual meetings for apo and played around with the closed captioning. that was fun. shaved my moms head lmaooo. worked on my capstone which im like super proud of? i wish i could have directed it but say law vee.

BAGPIPE CORPS INTERNATIONAL. virtual band wreaked havoc on my animals mental health. my grandmother would always bug me while i was working which i understand now was misplaced love but it was so irritating at the time. we had library meetings once a week or so that was vital to mental health. hosted a really fun “panel” about queer identity for my queer lit class that was able to educate a lot of people. having a capstone class with am*lia was a nightmare. watched a cirque du soleil show for free and lost my mind. wrote a comedic monologue that i suffered through. suffered through papers and projects. worked on a project with celeste and kelli and we had SUCH a good time. i hosted several jackbox nights for both apo and kpy. that was SUCH an exhausting experience. also uno and drawful with the uno group (kelli would win 100% of the time). ranted about group projects lol i struggled. OH THE MOVE OUT DEBACLE i really went off the deep end. kelli’s virtual birthday!!!!

we had so many good jackbox nights. academic showcase and honors convocation happened wherein i was name bronco award winner and that really wrecked me too lol. we had a sunday crew hang out for library workers. clarinet game night too! i tried so hard to build community during covid and im not altogether sure i accomplished it but ya know whatever. watsky broke the record! made my “aced it” grad cap which was so FUNNY and still is tbh. becky taught me how to do makeup. took grad pictures at an abandoned farmhouse lol OH MY GOSH BEAUX ARTS AND APO SKIT i was so proud of that night and annette said it was the best one we’d ever had. wish i had done more but we did it boys. also got VERY drunk for it lol completely redid my room. bc it was NASTY. the way i write papers is so SO funny to me. had our last capstones class and then dressed in grad outfits for our last lit meeting . graduated and got all my stuff from college finally. went shopping with timothy, had el puerto with becky (i think?). oh the infamous miller moths UGH shit is nasty. THE FORMING OF BANJO SHRIMPS occurred on may 24 2020 and that was the absolute best thing to come out of this year. started working at my dads agency which was the absolute worst thing to come out of this year. attended my first protest in cos which was good and healthy. started protesting regularly after that. my most poignant memory was laying down in front of city hall and chanting “i cant breathe” for 8 minutes.

it snowed???? i was angry. part of my job was reading my dad’s email and there was some WACKO shit in there. went to brookes for pride as a surprise which was cute n fun. had a horrible interaction with a client. the appearance of the bigfoot statue!!!! we had a vanilla beans hang out. there was a WILD storm that literally made my hide out in the office.

went on a bonkers rant about america bc fuck this place. helped mom out with homework. we had several clients get divorces which was messy. went to a Bad party where i was angry the whole time. went to the top of pikes peak with my grandma and saw many much bigfoot things. we got a GOOSE he hated us so much. oh there was a night where darci and kai came over and we hijacked kelli’s spotify and communicated that way it was SO funny. took a video of the dichotomy of man bc of my long ass leg hair and short ass head hair. shaved my head to the BONE and tried dragon fruit. GOT NIKO ON JULY 24 my sweet sweet boy lil bat looking motherfucker. got denied for life insurance for mental health reasons.

went back to hc for a birthday “party” and to see the band. did a lot in that weekend (stayed with timothy’s family, helped becky move, met kelli’s look-alike, saw timothy and karlie’s new house!!! had lunch with kellis family which is closest to “meet my parents” i think i’ll ever get lmao). got my prof headshots and hate every single one of them but more for self esteem reasons lol. neighbors got goats and my mom lost her marbles. got trapped in traffic on the way back from hc. niko had crackhead energy. oooooooh documented gender crisis. ma got more chickens. went to a birthday party for a high school friend and was just... so out of my element. its weird. took off my grandma’s bathroom door bc she had knee surgery. started a full time job as my grandmother’s caretaker (love working for the family business lol).

went to breckenridge with a friend!!!!!! spicy times lol. cleaned the cupboard. had a birf. turned 22. cas finished her drugs!!!! and felt much better. we did a charcuterie board for my birthday which was very fun. Got a mixer set!!! went to hc for homecoming and graduated!!!!! surprised celeste and hannah with a celebration party for them (it was a lot of fun). came up with my BEST joke (summa cum laude). got called tf out for my gender crisis via tarot. got the goose game!!!! played the goose game!!!!

applied to chicago center!!!! will now be working there for a year!!!! this was the first documentation of banjo shrimp nights. surprised my dad for boss day by working with the team to fill his office with balloons. house sat for dad’s friends. started taking showers in the dark. went to celestes and made PASTA wow got very drunk and while she slept i just explored a strangers house. voted!!!!! wow. finally (finally) started to accept that i was maybe agender. had a snow day but i couldn’t work so that was fun. had halloween with banjo shrimps where i dressed up as david rose. that was SUCH a good night. participated in ace week!!! then, dressed as radar for actual halloween and had monumental. worked a volunteer haunted house and like... actually did pretty good?? felt like a real adult!!!!

so many things happened in november. i finished miraculous ladybug on netflix. had another bad interaction with a client bc the customer is always wrong. shaved my head. PRESENTATION NIGHT to distract from the election lmao what a good time. had so many emotions about the election. then biden won and we lost our damn minds -- video called with celeste and becky to celebrate (with the reminder that we know that this doesn’t solve everything but it was such a huge sigh of relief). started watching the last kids on earth. made more PASTA and soup! got my GHOSTY TATTOO. kahoot night with the banjo shrimps lol. watched the supernatural finale with kelli (what good memories) rewatched 3below good shit. got the chicago job so i quit being an insurance person!!!! brooke came for thanksgiving!!!

i dont wanna talk about it but i finally started watching unus annus (theres an archive its not the same but it provided me wild amounts of serotonin). “call that invisible split dye”. crimmus. had a video call with people from high school i rarely if ever see. this entire month has been a fuckin blur my guys but i’m so excited for what’s next. in two days i will be in an apartment in chicago. i will be reunited with my best friend in a little under two weeks. i cannot emphasize enough how excited i am for this next chapter. so yeah. that was my year. im sure there was more memories but that’s what the sideblog is for lol

sf9 stands for “sensational feeling 9,” they’re an idol group under fnc entertainment that debuted on october 6, 2016. before debut they were in a program called neoz school as the neoz dance team, along with 4 other trainees that made up the neoz band team (now honeyst, check them out they’re great!) the two groups then entered the survival show dance or band (d.o.b) to get a chance at debut. the dance team won by a very close vote so they got to debut first. in korea, sf9 has released one single album, called feeling sensation, and two extended plays, called burning sensation and breaking sensation. in japan, they’ve recently released two singles, fanfare and easy love. they are currently holding fanmeetings around asia and will be at kcon la next month!

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Eleven years ago, environmental scientist Jesse Ausubel dreamed aloud in a commencement speech: What if scientists could record the sounds of the ocean in the days before propeller-driven ships and boats spanned the globe?

They would listen to chit-chat between blue whales hundreds of miles apart. They would record the familiar chirps and clicks among a pod of dolphins. And they would do so without the cacophony of humankind – and develop a better understanding of how that undersea racket has affected sea life.

It was a flight of fancy, more aspirational and inspirational than a plan.

At first, Ausubel says, he (very fancifully) suggested a year of a “quiet ocean,” during which shipping would come to a halt, or at least slow down. Then a month. And finally, just a few hours.

As far-fetched as even that was, a small fraternity of about 100 similarly curious scientists picked up on his vision. In 2015, they published a plan of how to conduct the International Quiet Ocean Experiment, should the opportunity ever present itself.

When the COVID-19 pandemic sparked an extreme economic slowdown in March, sending cruise ships to port and oil tankers to anchor, they mobilized. Last month, they finished cobbling together an array of 130 underwater hydrophone listening stations around the world – including six stations that had been set up to monitor underwater nuclear tests.

“Well, we’re not excited that COVID happened, but we’re happy to be able to take advantage of the scientific opportunity,” says Peter Tyack, a professor of marine mammal biology at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and one of the early instigators. “It would have just been impossible any other way.”

Tyack says the recordings should give scientists a never-before glimpse of the ocean with little human interference. It’s a bit like looking at the night sky if most of the world’s lights were turned off.

He says some research suggests large whales have adapted to man-made noises by raising their voices and their pitch. He speculates that many species also have moved to quieter regions of the world so they can find food, and one another, more easily.

Generally, the group will be looking to see if the whales and other sea mammals adapt to the quieter oceans by lowering their volume, communicating more efficiently or shifting their habitat.

Some of the project’s listening posts are connected to land via cables, but many of them are not and the recordings have to be retrieved by ships. Now that economies around the world are reopening, the quiet oceans group has started gathering the soundscape data.

It won’t be until the end of the year, however, that the researchers will have cleaned up the recordings and can compare them to previous years for changes in human and animal noise alike.

The focus of the serendipitous project is on the so-called SOFAR (Sound Fixing and Ranging) channel, a naturally occurring ocean stratum in which sound can travel long distances.

It’s where large baleen and fin whales sing for a lover or join in a friendly chorus. But it’s also where the human racket from fishing boats, tankers and motorboats, as well as oil rigs and wind turbines, gets trapped and then propagated around the world.

Sound waves travel farther and faster in water than in the air. That’s especially true of the bass notes of a whale’s song, the low grinding of a ship’s shaft, even the rumble of a nuclear explosion. Those sounds can travel hundreds or even thousands of miles, bending around the planet by bouncing up and down in the SOFAR channel, a kilometer-deep band of water.

The 130 recording stations used by the researchers are a hodgepodge of locations and sensitivity in that channel. Part of the planning process includes identifying and recruiting partners who operate listening stations run by governments, universities, environmental groups and other agencies.

The humblest station is four kilometers off the Spanish coast and operated by the Polytechnic University of Barcelona. It records sound up to 10 kilometers away. At the other extreme are six stations, each with multiple hydrophones, operated by the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization. Those stations can not only pinpoint underwater nuclear explosions anywhere on the planet, but also eavesdrop on whales an ocean away.

Ausubel, the director of the Program for the Human Environment at New York’s Rockefeller University, says he and his fellow dreamers were ready, even if their plan seemed unrealistic.

“We spent a lot of time planning: How would you try to set up this kind of study, even though we realized that it wasn’t really practical?”

But the plan, Ausubel says, anticipated moments of opportunity such as an extreme weather event, not a pandemic.

“Immediately after a hurricane or a typhoon, it’s very quiet for a day or two because of the fear of large waves or storms,” he says. “Fishermen don’t go out to sea; shipping routes are changed; oil and gas platforms may be shut down.”

Amid the pandemic and the lockdowns that ensued, major ports in the Northeast of the United States, such as Boston, Philadelphia, New York and Baltimore, saw a nearly 50% drop in ship and boating traffic in April compared to the same month in 2019, according to MarineTraffic, a ship-tracking firm.

Large European ports, such as Lisbon, Antwerp, Le Havre and Rotterdam, saw about a 25% drop in the same month, the firm said.

“I think there’ll be some variability in different places, which is quite important to test this,” Tyack says. “It isn’t really a controlled experiment, so it’s better to have 50 different sites, some of which noise is much lower and some of which it isn’t, to be able to look at the impact of the reduction.”

Still, Ausubel says he already sees anecdotal evidence that marine mammals are changing their behavior.

“There have been observations near Vancouver of orcas coming closer to the city than was customary, and off Scotland,” he says.

Orcas, dolphins and humpback whales, which communicate using high-frequency sounds that don’t travel particularly far, often congregate in shallower waters. They may have moved closer to once-busy ports and harbors, he speculated.

The group hopes to publish a paper this summer that gathers anecdotal reports of changes observed in recent months. At the end of the year, a group led by Tyack will report how much the volume went down. And finally, next year, the researchers aim to publish a full analysis of how the reduction in sound changed the behavior of marine mammals and other marine life.

“What did the pre-industrial ocean sound like,” Tyack says, “and how are marine ecosystems going to respond to that?”

It turns out that mermaids—creatures that are "half-children, half-animals" in Smoczyńska's words—serve as a perfect metaphor for developing girls grappling with their sexuality, objectification, and feelings of otherness. Smoczyńska's mermaids have beautiful faces and cascading hair, but they also have beastly, slimy, long, eel-like fishtails. Last year at the Sundance Film Festival The Lure won a Special Jury Prize in the Dramatic World Cinema competition for "unique vision and design." It's a lush, arresting art film with the transporting surrealism of Björk's music videos (which the filmmaker has named as an influence), the vivid colors and exhilarating energy of '90s foreign hit Run Lola Run, and shades of the poetic Czech cult classic Valerie and Her Week of Wonders and the deranged Isabelle Adjani film Possession thrown in for good measure. It's also a musical that was largely shot in an abandoned club in Warsaw and a vampire movie, in which the mermaids hunger for human flesh and—in a nod to Homer's sirens—hypnotize people with their voices. The dark-haired, rebellious Golden (Michalina Olszańska) squints and smirks challengingly at adults, making it clear than she won't be beholden to anyone, as she maneuvers through Warsaw’s nightlife world with its ramshackle glamour and a desolate, drab cityscape. Her sweet-tempered, ginger-haired sister, Silver (Marta Mazurek), is at once more mature than Golden and more vulnerable in her longing for earthly love. (Like her model, the eponymous character in Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid," Silver seems willing to give up her voice for legs, so she can become a human being). Smoczyńska is currently in Poland shooting The Fugue, her follow-up film about a woman with amnesia who doesn't want to recover her memory. We recently spoke to the gracious and down-to-earth director by Skype as she was traveling to the set.

JULIA YEPES: Even though The Lure is fantastical, you did a lot of things to make it feel emotionally true to being a teenager. For example, the songs were interlaced into the story in such a way that it didn't even feel like a musical. The songs just seemed like natural expressions of joy or angst or sadness. AGNIESZKA SMOCZYŃSKA: Yes. I don't know if you read this, but the band Ballady i Romanse, the Wrońska sisters, they play such music. It's anti-musical music, as you said. Zuzia's lyrics are like poems, and Basia, her sister, composes the music. I had to visualize their songs; it was my goal, my task to do this. We were working together for, I don't know, one year with our scriptwriter. One of the songs in the movie, Gold's song to Silver when there is the fishtail operation—it was the same in real life because one of the Wrońska sisters was in a hospital and the second sister, Basia, wrote this song to cheer her up. I really like the song with the end credits because the lyrics are about this creature who is singing that she prefers to be under the water, on the car parts and the trash. "And this is much warmer than your arms!" This is the sense of the song. In Poland, they found a body of a 2-year-old boy in a river, and Basia wrote this song because she was so touched by this story. This is what you can feel. The lyrics are from the perspective of the boy. I think this is a beautiful song of the mermaid to the human being. YEPES: What movies influenced you when you were a teenager? SMOCZYŃSKA: When I was a teenager it was movies by Jim Jarmusch, because when I was in secondary school, I was in a film class where I was able to watch very good films from age 14 to 19. So we had history of cinema, and every week we went to the cinema. I remember the movies of Tarantino, of course, and Jarmusch, but Bergman was also an influence on me, and also Back to the Future [1985]. The Karate Kid [1984] was very important for me. But the main characters in most movies were boys or men, and I really liked movies where the main character is a woman or a girl. Which other movies when I was a teenager? When I was a child it was La Strada [1954] by Fellini. I liked Cronenberg's Naked Lunch [1991]. But also I remember Arizona Dream [1993]. Of course, Batman [1989]. And Polish movies, especially Polanski and Kieślowski. It was these directors that I really liked the most. YEPES: What about Żuławski? SMOCZYŃSKA: Andrzej Żuławski, of course, and Agnieszka Holland, of course. And Andrzej Wajda. We had great, great filmmakers during communism. I grew up on these movies. To be honest, I didn't like horror, I didn't like thrillers. So this is my first movie, but my previous thoughts—they were normal psychological drama. YEPES: [laughs] No wonder you like Bergman. SMOCZYŃSKA: Yeah, exactly. Antonioni, Bergman. Very serious art cinema. YEPES: I saw a connection between your movie and Żuławski because his movie Possession [1981] deals with extreme emotions. The main character is dealing with the fallout of an ending relationship, so it deals with extreme grief, extreme despair. SMOCZYŃSKA: Yes. YEPES: And this movie also deals wild emotions and expresses them in unusual ways. Silver and Golden are topless for a lot of the movie. Why did you think you think that was necessary? SMOCZYŃSKA: We were thinking about it very seriously. If you can see mermaids in paintings and in the sculptures in Warsaw and also in Denmark, they don't wear bras. Bras were put on via Disney, not artists. Because Disney was for kids, that's why they had to add the bra. A mermaid doesn't need to wear a bra because she doesn't feel that she's naked. And we wanted to tell about creatures that do not feel ashamed because they are not human beings. For us, it was very important that our mermaids don't wear bras. YEPES: Did you feel that might limit who sees the movie? SMOCZYŃSKA: We didn't want to tell the story to the kids. It's a fairytale for adults. In Poland, you can watch it after 16 years old. It was also important for us to not show nudity in an erotic way or porno way, just natural. YEPES: The sisters have a telepathic connection to each other the way a lot of young girls that are good friends do. And in the movie, it's signaled by a dolphin-like sound. How did you work with the sound designer to arrive at that noise and in general? SMOCZYŃSKA: The sound design was crucial. I started to work with the sound designer after the first draft of the treatment. I treated the whole script as a score. I knew the sound design would involve the horror genre, the horror convention of the film, and also I was working with the sound designer on how to create the language of mermaids. We thought maybe they should speak via words. Then we started reading about fish, and fish can sometimes communicate via telepathy. So that's when we decided to use it. But you can hear dolphins, sharks, many underwater sounds—I think there are like 19 levels of sound in our telepathy. YEPES: How did you connect with the artist whose work is in the animated opening sequence? SMOCZYŃSKA: For the opening sequence, I used paintings from Aleksandra Waliszewska, a Polish painter. She invented the creepy, long, wet fishtail. I like this image because the mermaid is like a beautiful, sad monster. YEPES: But how did you meet her? Or how did you know her work? SMOCZYŃSKA: [Scriptwriter] Robert [Bolesto] and I knew her paintings from the internet. At the opening of her exposition, I came to her and said, "I'm a filmmaker, and I would love to work with you. I would like to make a movie about mermaids—could you paint the mermaid?" And she said, "No, I have to feel it." Then we sent her a treatment. After maybe a week or two weeks, she started to send us some paintings and they were fantastic. It was a huge inspiration for our team. YEPES: How did you cast the lead actresses? SMOCZYŃSKA: In the beginning, I thought because the characters were in their teens, maybe teenagers should act it, but after a while, I realized it's not possible for a teenager to act such a very, very hard role. We had a casting and we saw about 2,000 girls. [What we were looking for] was hard to find. But first of all we found Marta Mazurek, Silver. Then I started to look for her sister because I really needed the chemistry between them. YEPES: Your cinematographer used special old lenses and lamps to help create the bright colors and the mood for the movie. SMOCZYŃSKA: Yes. [Jakub] Kijowski joined us maybe two weeks or two months before the shoot. So it was very, very late, but he was fantastic. His input was really huge, because I gave him the music, I gave him the script, and he started to think about the whole visualization. YEPES: Were the saturated colors your idea? SMOCZYŃSKA: I showed him images of Diane Arbus, Nan Goldin, and also Waliszewska, and I told him, "I want something like this." I showed one particular picture of Waliszewska's, and when he watched the movie after editing, he told me he realized the film is very similar. Because he's also really young, we really used our imagination, not our experience. YEPES: I read that you made a short film about a woman who was transfixed by her neighbor's voice, and also a documentary about an opera singer who was getting older and losing her voice. So I thought it was interesting that that theme continues in this movie. SMOCZYŃSKA: Yes, yes, this is true. But this was very subconscious. I didn't think about it. Maybe I'm interested in the beauty of the voice, the beauty of singing. The documentary was about Maria Fołtyn, an opera singer, a diva. My short film was about an opera singer who seduced her neighbor via her voice. Our mermaids seduce people also via their voices. And I like this, because voice is something you can't paint, you can't photograph it, but you can show it in a movie. YEPES: You evoke the heady feeling of being on the verge of womanhood so well in The Lure. Would you ever be interested in making a full-length movie about adults? Because the adults in the movie don't seem happy. I know we're kind of seeing things from the point of view of the sirens, but the lives of the grown-ups are pretty bleak. I was wondering what your views of adulthood are. Is it possible to be happy as an adult? SMOCZYŃSKA: [laughs] I don't know. It's a hard question. It depends if you cut your fishtail or not. I think what I like in this movie, in this story, in this archetype is when you're growing up, before you become a woman, and when you are not a child, in this state, when you are a mermaid metaphorically, you can build yourself or you can lose yourself.
