DA: The Veilguard Spoiler review pt2 - The Grime

this is a hard one to tackle without strawmaning anyone because itll be a direct response to alot of defense ive seen for the games morality system so ill just start by saying, iykyk

never a genre has been better equipped to discuss ethics than the interactive medium of games and yes, bioware games have been doing it since baldurs gate and no, theyve not always been 'centrist' and 'conservative'. im not even gonna entertain that idea. do you remember the cultural landscape DA:O released to? the landscape it was developed in? dont give me that just because zevran doesnt write in his little notes -that you can conveniently read- 'gay good. not me but me bisexual'

Thedas is a flawed world and its a world thats just as desperate to hang on to its status quo as our own. every time you play an elf thats thriving, or a human thats queer, or a mage thats not institutionalised you exist in a world that doesnt want you, it is an act of defiance that you do.

im sure we can all see why these games were so popular with the audience they can only weakly try to pander to today.

derailing time again; so one of my favourite paintings of all time is saturn devouring his son. it makes me feel so uncomfortable that it gave me nightmares as a child, and i still cant look at it without feeling this knot in my throat. i hate it. i hate how it makes me feel, how that man looks at me in terror like its begging me for help while cannibalising another. weird story but i was bewitched by that painting as a little kid.

it is not a well drawn painting, the proportions are all over the place, brush strokes crude and inelegant. it doesnt even have a deeper story nor was it intended for an audience. i will never know what goya thought of when drawing it.

i thought alot about that painting later in my life when i was struggling with mental health problems, i thought about goya alot too as an adult and after learning about his life. i stared at his paintings and remembered when i told my dad that i hated [saturns] big eyes and hed jokingly said "it would be scarier if he didnt have eyes"

i know what the drawing looks like now, nearly everyone with a little access to the internet does. if somebody removed saturn from it, we'd still be left with a brutalised headless carcass of a man in a canvas too big for itself. if we removed that too all we'd be left with would be void.

i dont want to live in a world where all i know of goya is his rococo work, i dont want to stare at the painting of a void knowing what filled it before. i hated every second of germinale but i never wanted it to be anything other than itself, the story it tells could never hold credence otherwise.

DAV has done its best to paint over it, but its still on the old canvas and i cant look away from the negative space its left, i know whats under it and it unsettles me, infuriates me. it hands me a palette with baby blues and pinks and tells me to paint over it to make a prettier painting. didnt i hate the eyes? wasnt it gross before?

i am not going to write why we need some grime in art, but its absence is disheartening. and to those who say hanged people in the streets or blighted villagers is dark and mature ill say no. its a kids idea of maturity, its the aesthetic of it with no substance. it means nothing to me if rook can just drench themselves in gallons of blight as they crawl through it. the horror of blight has never been the black goo and slimy tentacles, or the monster woman with way too many tits. it is watching people you love slowly fade away, it is a woman who was forced to cannibalise the contaminated flesh of her friends because the woman she loved betrayed her, it was the sheer scale and inevitability of it.

one area we go to is overrun by it and the game begs me to feel hopeful that flowers are growing again when it never let me lose hope. people have already prevailed, they have roofs over their heads and a steady supply of food on their tables. their spirit is unwavering.

its bad, everybody says. the sky is grey and soil is blackened, as my rook turns some statues to access a haunted house whos inhabitants are long gone and the only story they could ever tell is gone with them.

if the question is do i want to see famine? plague? misery? abuse? assault? the answer is yes. yes. i want to see it all of the filth. i rather face the fucking monster head on with its big bulging eyes and misshapen limbs than stare at the abyss its absence leaves on the canvas.

and if nothing else, this bastardization is disrespectful to the people who gave the IP its fame.

Why choose to be good?

back in the bsn days ive wondered why, even in a fictional universe where your choices have no real-life repercussions what-so-ever, players had more 'good' playthroughts than 'bad'?

what happens when you start killing NPCs, when youre needlessly mean to them? the game actively closes off its own content. you get less out of the game. just as, completely incidentally, you'd get less out of your life if you just started killing everyone around you. The world would be emptier, youd be alone.

in that quote i stole from good place chidi doesnt ask "why be good?" the wording is painfully deliberate. doing good is always a choice, and often not the easy one. what makes the act matter is that you chose to do it, even when given 6 other options not to. did i stop in the middle of an important quest to help a man retrieve an heirloom from a darkspawn infested hut? did i hear what that heirloom meant to him?

i cant stop thinking about that speech ever since playing this game after knowing its predecessors.

So, why do it then? Why choose to be good, every day, if there is no guaranteed reward we can count on, now or in the afterlife? I argue that we choose to be good because of our bonds with other people and our innate desire to treat them with dignity. Simply put, we are not in this alone.

i cant stop looking at this game that spits on its own legacy and think how could they have missed what fundamentally makes us human so bad, what makes us relate and empathise with eachother. what makes us pick the option to interact with an npc who openly hates what hawke is, and allow us to see the traumatised man underneath.

these characters of fiction are written by real people. i have absolutely nothing in common with a guy from canada yet for a brief moment in time i feel a sense of camaraderie as ive felt with goya that i couldnt articulate as a kid.

Nothing too terrible

DAV says it over and over again -as its wont to do with every piece of its flimsy morality- that people can change, people can be redeemed yet it shines as the game with most static characters in its franchise. it simply says things, and since it has nothing to show for it it makes sure to say it repeatedly, in case you missed it.

so when i first played DAO i was in high school, i started with a human noble because fresh out of dark side edgy kotor fame i wanted to be a posh brat. also because, ya kno, we were poor my entire life up until that point and i wanted to have power.

i committed to it, even as the game stripped cousland of everything he had, because i thought a man like him would. i picked the racist options, the sexist options, the options a man in couslands place would. halfway point of the game as i exhausted the initial dialogues something happened; this man who got paid to kill people, who showed no remorse nor care for his victims, begged my cousland to stil his blade.

and i did. i thought maybe he would be as confused as i was, maybe he had a moment of clarity but from thereon bit by bit he was less of an asshole. the characters grew around me, and my character grew around them. i chose to be good because -textually- we were in this together, at the end of all things.

rook is not a character, theyre a mascot. and quite frankly i think they may be a very evangelical mascot because they remind me of evangelical preachings of jesus more than the man from the bible (and i say this as someone whos only exposure to christianity has been through foreign media and the bible ive read that one time). they are the epitome of do no evil and their existence hinges on the frail concept of moral purity. theyre not a person trying to do good, who wants to be good, they are 'good'

-and lemme tell you its a wild choice to have someone like that locked in a prison of 'regret'-

rook can be mean to only one person in the game, and thats someone they dont even have a personal beef with for the most part. but even then they would be shouting at a wall because the game doesnt only undermine them with its narrative, but also every npc in the game suddenly gets possessed by the ghost of wattpad rejects past for a moment to tell them everyone can be redeemed. and i believe it because i played the other games, i believe it because i know zevran and sten and morrigan, isabela and thom and iron bull and dorian. i know it because i can see the vague shapes behind the new coat of paint but i am not rook.

so no, the game fails to get people-can-change points by its own merit, and it cannot gain points from its prequels because it destroyed them. none of those characters i watched grow exist in this universe. zevran cant exist with DAV crows, fenris` story cant exist in an imperium with invisible slaves only glimpsed through empty cages and broken chains left scattered on the ground. i dont know which morrigan this NPC is, is it the woman who grew to learn kindness, who begged to sleep with her friend just to save them despite knowing it would play into the plans of a destiny she so desperately tried to break free from? or is she the clever puppet her mother groomed her to be who wanted to harness the power of a god? i dont know her, i dont know this dorian or this isabela beyond their names ipso facto this is not a sequel.

bellara asks an assassin why he is trying to save the world and his answer is "ive done some things in the past im not too proud of. nothing too terrible, but some of it was bad." and i can hear the games desperation for me to not engage with its material in that 'nothing too terrible'

lucanis never killed anyone innocent, taash never harmed an animal they could shoo of or reason with, emmrich venerates the dead and is friends with every wisp he pulls to use in menial labour, davrin joined the wardens willingly because he wanted to do good...

rook tells harding that her anger is justified when shes not even allowed anger of her own.

nothing too terrible.

aside from creating boring and nonsensical and static characters it creates a dreadful echochamber that we're forced to sustain. No taash is not valid, their gender is but their behaviour is not and for the character to grow and mature it needs to be addressed. lucanis doesnt need to be pampered in shock blankets he needs to see how repressing his problems and jeopardising his health puts people around him in danger etc etc. they are adults and they need to learn more complex ways of healing. and if rooks flaw is that theyre an enabler, then that needs to be acknowledged by the narrative in some way too, and not mindlessly endorsed because they say some buzzwords.

none of these interpersonal relationships feels real because none of these people feel real beyond some draft of themes and tropes. some interactions literally remind me of two bots in facebook comments

i look at this dialogue wheel with familiar symbols and all im reminded of is hawke telling carver he carries every death with him, of him telling his uncle that he wasnt fast enough, of him begging the person he loves to tell him that his mothers death wasnt his fault.

and they dont. they just sit there with him.

saiki k is a golden anime.

i finished season 1 just now and. i have feelings. copy pasted from discord as a ranting to @peapodsinspace but i have to recommend the anime now.

i feel like the genre is comedy anime but. there are a lot of dark undertones to it. this is a teenage boy and he has to suffer every single day for powers he doesnt want. it impacts his everyday life and all he wants is to be normal but he doesnt know what normal is despite it being right in his face.

he pushes these people away but they continue coming after him. like real friends. normal friends.

they think of him and like him no matter what he does or acts or anything and. he loves them right back. he does things for them and they try to do things despite the fact that it typically goes wrong or he knows what theyre doing. he doesnt even care that he doesnt get acknowledgement because he doesnt want it.

so like.. i have to mention his friends. kusuo gives them grief constantly. always dissing them, always using their thoughts against them (such as teruhashi and her dislike for kids and bowling). because he can hear them. saiki kusuo not only gets his ideas about them from how they act and what they say, but also by what they think and that is a huge teller because they dont think anyone is listening. this is a private space that kusuo cannot even escape from whether he wants it or not and he is forced to hear and see whatever they think. ive joked about how he is always in gossip but. he literally cannot get out of it because he is such a kind person, that he wants to help.

and he gets to see all sides of them whether they show it or think it. kaidos letter. kaido defending yumeharu. hairos determination. yumeharus dedication. teruhashi and her utility of her own abilities. nendo with his mom and job and how he threw away millions of yen to save a drowning kid. kusuo is always there to see any part of that, and he gets a more in depth experience while choosing friends. should i mention that all those examples are things that kusuo didnt use his powers to observe? they were all things that he used his normal senses to find out or watch or overhear. it is very important to both kusuo himself along with the audience that he didnt use his powers to watch them be themselves and nice in all those situations as a normal teenager.

and i find it important that over time, and these experiences cumulate, that he slowly figures out that these are good, genuine people. sure they can be weird or perverted or cunning, but at the end of the day, they care about him and it only comes out so blatantly when they plan a surprise party specifically for him.

because many of us (hopefully) have wondered. what is inside our friends minds? and saiki has the answer. and he can see that they mean well. he may not understand most people and their emotions, but he knows some basics. and perhaps that could be enough to get him to live normally.

not to mention kuniharu and his convo with kusuo... despite some of the grief i give the man for constantly demanding his son do things for him, he knows his kid well. that convo is totally the pinnacle of their entire relationship, kusuos feelings, his friends.

kusuo mentioned that he doesnt tell his parents about new powers in fear they will demand more things and become lazy but. they care about him and know him. they understand his aversion to friends and know when to help him out or to push him to be around them.

he aided in that surprise birthday party but he also encouraged kusuo to go to his party that his friends threw for him. and he overhears that conversation without his telekinesis. because they actually know him and they all agree upon it. its not as in he is looking into their minds. he hears them through the door.

so he cant come to the conclusion that it was just a private thought that nobody wanted to voice aloud. no, they all agreed upon it. and they all verbally agreed to be nicer. just as his dad had said they would

it was weird seeing saiki kusuo smiling like that because he isnt one to do that and his friends know him well enough to know that (despite the fact kusuo avoids them!!) and they can all agree. they were all very happy to see kusuo smiling but they knew it jsut wasnt right

every time that kuniharu sneaks off to meet with the real saiki k they want, he is always trying to get kusuo to join them as himself

he is always encouraging his son to go hang out with his friends and he is still ready to go along with what kusuo wants. he was probably ready to go back to them after that last convo if kusuo still declined. but his words definitely got to kusuo because there arent that many people in the world who can understand kusuo so well

i know ive made fun of this but everyone around him sees him all wrong in their minds. they see the damsel in distress eyes or the idiot circle eyes. they hear a high pitch and weak voice. but not his parents. kusuos dad actually knows who he is and accepts him and loves him and encourages him to live out his dream of being normal by telling kusuo about what being normal is really like. to have friends who love you and go out of their way to try and make your day. kuniharu has to 'lecture' kusuo in order to get him to understand that the reason he was staying away was not because the classmates were 'bullying' or 'being annoying' from the kindness and love of their own decisions. it was because kusuo was scared of hurting them or disappointing them or even for them to abandon him.

and of course, that is a very common teenage feeling!! the fear of disappointing your friends- of course its normal!! saiki kusuo is a normal kid with not so normal powers attached to him.

Daisy has been my friend since we were 6 years old, she is like a sister to me! We've been at each others side through thick and thin and I care about her so much.

Daisy's home life has never been the best and her parents are nightmare people who are a blight on the general public but as well as Daisy's home life.

Daisy doesnt have the ability to drive, work or save her own money even when she did work as her mother would take the money she earned constantly, and was ultimately the reason Daisy was unable to keep her job.

So for Daisy's end she has no ability to save and moving funds, it will primarily be on me to round up the money.

We are not 100% sure how much we are going to need at this moment in time but have a rough estiment.

Were hoping to get Daisy's mother on a good mood and have her pay for Daisy's plane ticket. We are going to be unable to move all her stuff and will just have to pack as much as she can into a large suitcase and fly up. So we will not have to pay for the plane, but will have to pay for bedding, and everything else she will need once up here. we have some temporary arrangements Via my bed and couch and potentially picking up a blow up mattress. But my current apartment is extremely small and not much room for two people let alone just me. Not sure how long I will be in this space while Daisy is up here if at all.

I may potentially reach out to my step father and ask him to dip into the savings he has kept for me to get Daisy furniture and necessities. But im avoiding that for as much as i can as im not on the best terms with my dad.

I will start looking for a bigger place for us to live together once we start getting in a comfortable area on savings. As the only money maker currently i will be needing savings to afford a place for us to share that will of course be much more expensive than where i am right now. Daisy will start looking for a job once she is/has moved up here and hopefully we will be able to support ourselves at that point, it will just be the first little bit of time we will need a cushion.

this is one of the areas im not 100% sure how much were going to need but certain in the thousands area knowing rent for a place big enough for two individuals.

after that its just gonna be us figuring it out.

but otto? yeah ottos second in line for being an Unhinged Wildcard. but whats even worse is that otto is Basically Subaru but More Calculating and with a moral backbone thats Near Nonexistent. roswaal was genuinely concerned for otto in arc 8 for once and there was still Literally No Stopping Otto from being a stubborn little shit whos hell bent on all the maladjusted insane mentalities hes got floating around in his head, half of which he doesnt even say out loud, and all of which he thinks is Completely Right and that theres Nothing Wrong with what hes doing.

and also otto being underestimated and Not In The Tome was a big help as to how subaru got the win over roswaal in arc 4 👍and then otto Continues to try keeping an eye on roswaal after arc 4, to the point of getting roswaal's tome and actively trying to investigate roswaal's actions, so roswaal is Very Aware that otto is. a bit of a threat. roswaal of course is smarter and more powerful than otto though, but that still doesnt change the fact that otto is still capable of being a threat if roswaal doesnt Also kind of keep an eye on otto back. because roswaal kind of lost to otto already in arc 4!!

but okay, on top of all of this, no one knows the full extent of whats going on with otto, not even roswaal (though he has his Suspicions), and most definitely not subaru yet (whos Still a bit of an otto apologist anyway), and otto is already a bit menacing even without knowing All of that. and the rest of the emilia camp are already a bit more lenient with roswaal (as hes seemingly chilled out after arc 4 + they all need him still). that, and you can easily Expect roswaal post-arc 4 to be suspicious and Probably up to something. you wont know what it is, but you wont Exactly be surprised when it happens.

and also roswaal isnt publicly batshit crazy like otto is. otto of course isnt as Openly Weird as subaru, but otto is still Openly Unhinged and Pathetic. just look at him declaring julius and anastasia, HIS CAMP'S ALLIES, as enemies right to their faces alsdfjlsdjfl.

and with subaru, there is Zero doubt in the emilia camp's minds that subaru wants the best for them and everyone around them.

but the fact that we (the audience) (or at least some of us!!) keep questioning why the hell the emilia camp thinks otto is the biggest threat there is means that otto's funny silly guy image is. Kind of Working??? just a little bit.

because. granted. of course i think subaru is easily the most threatening person there with both His Flavor of Insanity and rbd. subaru is an eldritch horror in every single way. but at the same time - hes an eldritch horror who thinks friendship is the best magic of all T^TT !!! he FORGIVES PEOPLE WHO'VE KILLED AND TORTURED HIM. hes not threatening in this sense - the fact that hes kind of just way too nice in this sense!!! granted yes, he IS abusing rbd and Terrifying and Threatening in a multitude of ways, but i'd rather take my chances with mainbaru over main otto right now HAH T^TT at least subaru will apologize and start bawling his eyes out if he stabs some random innocent civilian and stranger in the gut for Some Necessary Reason!! otto would feel a bit bad and then completely Eradicate that feeling of guilt with "i had to do it. it was them or me so no regrets <3".

i haven't seen a good "younger versions of a character suddenly show up" AU in a while

but remember the ones where kid kaveh appears where he's very clearly parentified & trying to be mature even tho he's a kid with loads of trauma... + also him trusting adult alhaitham more

(probably sensing the awkwardness from adult kaveh who doesnt know how to acknowledge the fact that his younger self is very clearly not okay

bc that would mean that he wasn't okay when he was younger, bc he didn't really get help back then, and maybe that wasn't okay actually?)

thinking about this more:

imagine adult kaveh running into kid kaveh crying at night because he's lonely/scared/worried about his mother, etc

& even tho younger kaveh says he's fine, adult kaveh sits down & tells him he doesn't have to cry alone, its ok to cry when life's hard

& its a nice bonding experience, esp bc their earlier interactions were a bit awkward (talking to your future/past self is weird, even without unspoken trauma/guilt hanging over you both)

but then adult kaveh later has to process all these big feelings about his childhood...

like, this goes beyond just confirming that he's not responsible for his dad's death. he's known for years that his childhood feelings of guilt were irrational-- it's just hard to shake the guilt nonetheless

and the same goes for the parentification.

seeing his younger self makes kaveh acknowledge that he never properly grieved for his dad... (he never gave himself the chance to)

bc as a child kaveh pushed down his own confusion, (guilt), & sadness so that he could try to cheer up his depressed mother, which is why kid kaveh would want to cry in secret instead of seeking out comfort from adult figures. not to mention the month(?) where his dad seemingly abandoned his family... (he went to aaru village but didn't send messages back, just an unsent letter to kaveh that was lost)

how was his dad's disappearance even explained to kaveh as a kid? what did faranak even think of this whole situation?

her loving wonderful husband who has been an amazing father suddenly gets closed off after losing a competition and then leaves without explanation...

faranak doesn't know when her husband will be back, so she can't make plans:

does she need to take time off work for childcare?

what does she tell kaveh, who's definitely missing his dad? (as faranak is the "famous" parent, i hc that kaveh's father was the go-to caretaker parent)

did any celebrations or holidays pass with her husband still gone?

the bills still need to be paid even if her husband is missing... (there's no prize money for him taking 2nd place anyways) so faranak's career is still important, even as all these questions need to be handled

she seems to lack support (her husband was the social one, not her)

imo this time period was already a crisis situation for kaveh's family...

faranak undoubtedly was burning the candles at both end (looking after kaveh as a solo parent, still needing to work on architecture commissions to keep an income, the worrying & lack of closure...)

the news of her husband's death in the desert was just the final push

faranak could hold it together, up until she couldn't.

she was already stressed, worried, tired, but now she will have no relief. there will be no homecoming for her husband. kaveh will be father-less

ofc she falls into depression! ofc she stops smiling! ofc she is not okay! who would be?

except the thing is, her son is old enough to notice that she's distraught, to notice that she's been working too hard, to understand what it means when told that his dad's never coming back

so kaveh decides, he has to help. his mom's been stressed out worrying about childcare and the bills and all these mundane adult things

and he can't help that much with the bills. he can't bring back his dad (put a pin in that).

but he CAN make sure he's not a burden

kaveh can help. he MUST help, actually-- his mother's been working so hard for so long, it's his turn to look after her

(he is like maybe 10 btw)

which is how he becomes so emotionally attuned to his mother's worries and problems that he neglects his own

he grows up. he goes to school. he does well in school. he makes sure that all his mother hears from him is good news. his mother moves away, finds new love, she's happy again. he's happy for her.

& everything's all good.... except for his lingering sense of guilt which is eventually resolved with the revelation that sacchin had been behind his dad's sudden change of heart

so yeah, all good now! except for how kaveh's still wary of sharing bad news with his friends...

& how kaveh still doesn't know what to write in his letters to his mother

(everything has to be shallow & casual so there's no reason for concern... which is not kaveh's writing style at all...

kaveh is not a "light & breezy" person, he cares very deeply about so much...)

and his mother clearly doesn't either, so their letters have dropped off entirely

which is fine! mostly, anyways

besides, if there's distance between them, it's probably kaveh's fault? what kind of son doesn't know how to talk to his mother? its not like she was abusive or mean

kaveh can't blame her for anything! faranak was dealt with incredibly bad cards after his dad left them

& she held on for as long as she could.

& kaveh's (physical) needs were met.

resenting her for being sad her husband died would be unreasonable! he can't be upset at her.

he's not upset at her.

...except seeing his younger self worry about his mother's health even though objectively there is not much his younger self can do makes kaveh feel a certain kind of way

...kaveh knows very well why his younger self's first reaction to being found crying is to stop & say he's fine, don't worry about him...

that was hard to learn to do as a kid. but somehow its just as hard as an adult to realise that his younger self should have had more support

remember that pin earlier about his father? yeah, turns out that kaveh's feelings about his father don't just end at "phew, i knew i wasn't really at fault for his death, but now i know for sure it wasn't"

bc before his father's premature death in a sandpit after rescuing others

his dad had abandoned his family. and kaveh literally experienced the exact same horror-terror nihilism doom-gloom overload that sacchin threw at his dad. he KNOWS it was bad.

but kaveh (at likely a similar age to his dad to boot) wouldnt have left everyone behind without a word

so that was... not good of his dad to do

esp with a kid at home

but he loves his dad!

his dad had been an amazing dad! his dad's last moments were even a charitable act saving other people!

all of his life, kaveh likely heard stories about his father's kindness & moral character

so how can kaveh hold his father's one moment of weakness against him?

...except he can literally see the direct consequences of his parents' lives falling apart in his younger self

in the way this child wipes away their tears while saying not to worry in the same breath

and it makes him feel a certain kind of way. maybe even a mood where crying is a necessary way to express all these feelings that he's been trying to avoid thinking too hard about for more than half of his life

but imagine if kid kaveh runs across adult kaveh crying in private

and of course adult kaveh immediately tries to pull himself together because he doesn't want to upset his younger self or put all of these heavy thoughts onto his younger self who's really too young to have to worry about all of this

...which is immediately pointed out as being hypocritical by his younger self. because kaveh may be a kid, but he's still very smart. and his older self had just told him that he doesn't have to cry alone.

and yeah. kaveh did say that didnt he?

except he really doesn't want to explain to his younger self why he's crying. the whole point here is that his younger self has been burdened with understanding too much of the problems of adults around him, and not enough of his own

wait... his mother's diary talked about how companionship was more important than understanding. maybe he doesn't need to explain. his younger self doesnt need to understand why he's upset. maybe its enough for them to sit together and feel bad--

because what happened to their family WAS bad. and its ok to personally be upset by it all

at least at the end of it, kaveh's no longer as distant and awkward around his younger self!

he's probably more aware that he's got more emotional processing to do after his younger self is safely back to his own timeline

...but at least he knows now that he won't have to be alone

(bc ofc alhaitham notices that multiple versions of kaveh have been crying in their home)

LIKE kaveh is absolutely nice to the kid version of himself

but young!kaveh is already used to being very aware of his effect on other people's emotions

& so he can tell that adult!kaveh isn't comfortable around him...

+ i think young!kaveh would take pride in how mature & responsible he is

so adult!kaveh would try to do things for him, kid kaveh'd push back bc he can do it dw!

and then kaveh is just spiraling quietly bc just bc his younger self could do something doesnt mean he has to, alone

Honestly caine seems like a comedy sort of guy, you know? He looks like he enjoys telling and hearing a good joke every now and then. So I can easily see you two just rattling off jokes to each other until your digital lungs cant handle the sheer amount you guys are laughing!

I think he would lightly tease you for your laugh, but it's all in good fun!

I think she would be able to find some humor in your jokes, even through her desperation to escape the circus. I think that there would be some occasions where she would tell you to cut it out with the jokes, mostly if shes trying to look around for any clues of an exit

As for the laugh, I think it REALLY catches her off guard, especially in the beginning. Probably just stands there awkwardly

RAGATHA:

Honestly I personally see ragatha not being able to tell good jokes, be it because they dont make sense or because the punchline just isnt that funny.... perhaps both. Point is only the dullest of people will laugh at her attempts. With that being said I think she would love hearing you chatter! Really helps take the stress out of a hard day

Now this man can be a real jokester. Sure a lot of his jokes revolve around some level of meanness and teasing, so theres a chance your senses of humor may clash against one another. Afterall, humor that relies on making fun of people isnt for everyone and it can only go so far until it steps into bullying territory. Similar to caine, you two have a "joke off"

I think he would either find your laugh really goofy, or annoying. No in between though it may vary by the day. Probably gives you a nickname based on what your laugh sounds like

KINGER:

He gives dad vibes so by law he has to enjoy dad jokes, that's his humor. Bad cheesy jokes are his go to. I don't think he himself makes many jokes, given his current state,but I think he does appreciate it when you go off and tell him a bunch of jokes

I think if you had a really distinct or intense laugh it would catch him off guard, but ultimately he grows used to it

ZOOBLE:

Doesnt really understand how you can laugh at literally anything. Well, unless its jax getting karma for his antics.. then maybe they would laugh along with you. As funny as they think you are, I dont think they would be able to listen to jokes and funny stories every day for an extended period of time. Zooble had a short social battery imo and they do like their alone time. Nothing against you, this is just how they are!

Very similar to jax in regards to your laugh, just without the nickname portion. I think they would feel just a touch bad if your laugh happens to irritate them, they at least understand you cant really. Change your laugh

Ohohohoh when she had her comedy mask, you guys are bouncing off one another like in Caines piece! However when her comedy mask is broken and shes shedding tears, your jokes can still make her lighten up just a bit.. so hey at least its helping someone..!

Honestly she kind of finds your laugh endearing. It's just so genuine and open, you dont try to hide your laugh or suppress it or try to change it. I dunno, maybe I'm putting too much thought into gangle having a mask that literally effects her mood and demeanor, but I think she would wish she could be as open as you

pearl and maya come down to see phoenix early into the 7yg. and what do you know, kristoph is there too. phoenix introduces them as pearl studies this new man. she's come to terms w the fact that phoenix and maya arent together, but when she sees how kristoph's hand is placed on phoenix's arm something clicks. "oh! mr kris is mr nick's 'special someone'!"

phoenix goes to correct her but kristoph shushes him, "let her have a little fantasy, it's easier than correcting her anyway."

"yeah, but she'll expect us to act all couple-y in front of her." phoenix warns

kristoph raises an eyebrow, "is that all? half of my office already thinks we're an item, i dont think we'll find it difficult." it's mostly the truth, most of his office have deduced that theyre sleeping together and a few of them call phoenix "mr gavin's boyfriend" when they think he can't hear them.

and that makes phoenix pause. kristoph isn't wrong. everyone seems to think there's something going on: staff at the borscht bowl, kris's coworkers, and now pearls... fuck it, whats the harm in indulging her a little? "yeah, kristoph is my special someone" and he's gotta admit, pearls's delighted squeal makes the lie worth it.

throughout the day it's surprisingly easy to fake it, especially since maya and trucy pick up fast and play along. phoenix is thankful that theyre so smart and put up with his bullshit. even so, every time kristoph laughs at phoenix's jokes or leans into his arms he can feel trucy's gaze boring holes into his back. he doesnt know what she's looking for, but it's a relief when they put her and pearl to bed for a sleepover.

in trucy's room pearl sighs dreamily "wow, mr kris and mr nick are really, truly in love!" she's kicking her feet.

trucy hums a doubtful little "mhm..." and pearl looks worried.

"oh no, you dont sound so sure"

trucy's eyebrows are pinched together like shes thinking very very hard, "i know uncle kris likes daddy a whole lot, i KNOW he does..." she trails off.

"... but?" pearl prompts.

"i don't know! grown-ups are weird" she mumbles, frustrated. daddy and uncle kris aren't actually dating, she knows that. but they didnt seem to not like being a couple today. maybe that means they like each other? but that doesnt feel right either.

pearls pulls trucy out of her thoughts, "hey, if mr nick and mr kris are boyfriend-boyfriend does that mean you have two dads?"

trucy blinks. "uncle kris isnt like daddy," she smiles, "but if he was i think that means i have three!"

meanwhile kristoph, phoenix, and maya are in the living room. maya thanks them for saving her from a million questions about nick on the way back, and tells kristoph it was nice to meet him, it's good for nick to have a "friend" who lives near him for once. she means it.

the moment kristoph leaves maya turns to phoenix, "he's a weird guy."

phoenix smiles "he's not so bad once you get used to him. besides, he's good to trucy and i, and i appreciate that." he doesn't know why kristoph has been so kind to them, but he's in no place to question someone's generosity.

theres a pause as maya thinks, "hell, edgeworth was weird too and you were right about him. i'll trust your judgment this time, gavin seems to make you happy" a smile creeps onto her face, "so dont take 3 years to confess to this one," and she laughs as phoenix sputters and blushes.
